Alright folks, we’re back discussing the greatest sixth men of their era. Except this time, we’re focusing on the 2010’s- a time filled with high flyers, volume shooters, and selfless players who could simply do it all on the floor. The 2010’s notably heralded perennial sixth men who possessed unique styles of play and the ability to fill in the gaps by exploiting the rhythm of the game. There were also dark horse hustlers who made impacts in their own special ways that could not be emulated. Yes, sir, the brother in law Damien Lee, another part
of the NBA bench mob. You take pride in that
I know you're calming out yourself, a good career for yourself.
But uh, I know me personally, I've started a couple
a few years of my career, but mostly coming off
the bench doing my thing. You take pride and being
one of those guys coming off the bench. It's harder
than people see, man, I try to tell them on
this pile of the time, you don't always have a

rhythm like some of the guys who know they don't
get a certain amount of shots every night. Do you
take pride and coming off the bench.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Yeah, definitely. I mean I feel like the beauty of
coming off the bench is that, you know, you sort
of see the game in real time, you know, the
first five six minutes. Then you can see where you
could you know, inject yourself in the game, whether it's
you know, trying to get to the line, knowing if
you're close to the bonus. Uh, maybe if there's a
one more that you can make, you know, just different
adjustments that you can make. You know, after the first

five or six minutes of the game, it's huge.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
As a six man. How do you stay prepared for
a game?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
I mean, for me, really, my routine pretty much stays
the same. Like there's been some opportunities where I have
had the opportunity to start, but for me, it's really
you know, my shooting time is always two hours before
the game, come back in, get a lift in, take
a shower, go to chapel, go talk to the lord.

(03:30):
Then you know, lock in once it's you know, sixty
minutes on the clock, and then really just read the
game as it is, you know, just understand that the
way that the game goes right, I'd say more so
the regular season in the playoffs, but regular season it's
you know, the first five or six minutes of the
game really kind of scripted that next flow that you get,

(03:50):
you know, up until the last four minutes of the
first half, everything's really free flowing. So it's like that's
where guys really learn, you know, take advantage of the
spots and kind of manipulate the game in that way.
And I think that's one thing that you know, you
really stay prepared, you're really locking on the details on that.
And you see a lot of guys that has success

in that.

So I got a question for both of you guys,
since you guys take pride off coming off the bench,
and Damian you just mentioned scenarios, right, the flow and
the playoffs and different environments of like how the game
changes after the last up to up until the last
four minutes of the first half, right, Well, I really
want to know is it harder to adjust when added
to a starting lineup.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
I mean, I'd say it's definitely a different role, right,
It's like you have to sort of assert yourself earlier
into the game knowing that you know you're kind of
taking someone else's spot, you know, someone that may be hurt,
and there could be sort of role clarity in that,
or maybe not as much role clarity with you being
a starter, and you know, you're more comfortable coming off

the bench. Like you see that throughout the league, Like
there's guys who are better, you know, bench guys, and
then there's guys that are better at starters. And you know,
whenever that role sort of flips and flops, you know,
guys guys don't know how to adjust to that.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Yeah, that's a good point, because you know what I'm saying,
there's we get into some of these players when I'll
talk about throughout the best six man and twenty tens,
like you said that some players who they're thriving at
six man roll coming off the bench, they know what
they We're gonna get out of them and throw them
in the starting lineup, and you up their minutes, their
production and efficiency goes down a little bit.

So I mean it's different waves to it.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Also, like throughout my career there's been teams I've been
on where I've a couple of seasons I've started out
starting and I've come to the coach, I'm like, let
me come off the bench. I'm getting a better rhythm.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
I know certain one.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
In one instance, I was in Dallas, UH and I
was playing with Luca the first time, and I was
and I was starting some games, me and Tim Hardaway
with Flip Floppings who was starting, and I'm like, let
me come off the bench. I know, I know I'm
gonna get my shots. I get a couple of players
called for me instead of just having to playoff Luca
the whole time, he's making most of the most of
the decisions. He's he's determining run a high pick and

roll with spreading it out. He's determined who getting the
shots here and there, and it was kind of tough
for me in some senses. So uh kind of figured
out that that six man role coming off the bench,
and I was able to play a little bit better.
But like I said, it's a given taking both ways,
you know what I'm saying. So obviously, when you're starting,
you're getting you're gonna probably play a little bit more minutes.
You're gonna you have a chance to have a get

up to it, maybe a slow start. You can know
you're gonna shoot your way into a good game most
of the time.

And then.

And when you come off the bench, you get to
see the game. You get to read the game, see
the flow, see how teams defending, see see things you
can you can do once you get in there. And
that's kind of that's always my, uh my point of
view when I'm when I'm starting the game out off
the bench, I'm trying to stay loose, but also reading
the game and seeing how I can affect it.

So now that you already mentioned the greatest six man
of twenty tens this episode, let's set the stage man
Because a lot of people don't know how to win
the award, how to what's a sixth man, and all
that other stuff. But we want to talk about the
six man before we jump in and name these these
talented players. So the NBA six Man Award recognized players

who excel coming off the bench, provide scoring, playmaking and
defensive impact. So this is the criteria for us as
we go through these players' names based on awards, impact
and recognition during the year of twenty tens, here are
the greatest six men of the decade. We're going to
start with this one particular, Jamal Crawford d Lee. How

good is Jamal Crawford.

I mean, arguably one of the best ever, right, Like
it's you hear the story. It's the myth that he
never worked on his handles, Like he never did actual
drib dribbling drills. Everything that he did was just read
and feel. And you know, you see how his game
is six', five two hundred, pounds soaking. Wet but that
man is pure bucket score do it at all three.

LEVELS i mean he had what fifty at forty years
old something like. That, Yep so it's, like you, know
it's he's he's one of those names that when you
bring up six, men not even just twenty, tens but
of all, time it's like he's one of them.

Guys, yeah he's a problem coming off the. Bench you,
know he gonna he not shy at. All he coming.

Off he has to do one thing that's put the
ball in the.

Hole he came off the point and he was averaging
eighteen coming off the, bench averaging eighteen for multiple. Seasons it's,
Ridiculous like that's a ridiculous, number eighteen or eighteen a.
Night and THEN i mean you got the next, guy
Lou will Who Will? Will it's him and Lou? Will
Who will seemed like for a five six year, Period,
yeah for a five six year, period him and Lou
will were battle that the who's gonna win that SIX

BEST i, Mean i'm sure both of those guys feel
like they could have been starters in the. League BUT
i know we talked about it in a separate part
about what why certain guys are six men that have
to are mainly bench players and not. Starters but they
they're not great, defenders you know What i'm. Saying so
they have like that one big. Flaw that was kind
of tough to put them in that start, lineup BECAUSE i,
mean you needed a lot of guy teams played with

the play with a great point guard most of the,
time whether it Was james harder than Lou will's, case
Or Chris.

Saying they needed a guy that, too who could defend
most of the, time and that's not who they. Were
so they came off with that one specific skill putting
the ball in the, hole and they changed a lot
of games and it WAS i mean that both of
those were fun to watch.

Thinking about Lou. Will every scout, right, sir you play Lou,
will it's forced him, right, yep because if that man
get left or it's like every play that was drawn
up for him was always on the left side of
the floor because you, know he's always getting to that,

and then even when he was IN, la it was
like him And, treads that two man pick and roll
was just.

Unstoppable, YEAH i know for a. FACT i know for
a fact guarding.

Him and then ONCE i got a chance to play For,
DOC i, realized like All Doc doc was great because
he put all his players in position to do what
they do. Best so he coming to the game guarding
the player like Lou will's, like don't let him get
left because it's a. Bucket so that's What i'm. Thinking
but everything he always found a way to get. Left
and it was because they ran plays to where he.
Was the left side was, clear so or they ended

up getting the screen going to his left and it
was nothing you could do about.

It he had like a, package LIKE i said he.

Had he had the privilege coming into a package of
plays for him and like you, said him And tres
that two man game where it was it was. Stuff
they had counters for everything and it was just stuff to.

Stop, yeah speaking Of, tres how impactful was he especially
with The clippers team and the energy he, brought you
know WHAT i, mean he was Six man of The,
year but also just you know when he comes in
he can actually change the, game like immediately on the
boards or however getting to the, line et. Cetera how

Montre, Yeah trails was a problem too because he was
a change of. PACE i, know like WHEN i talk
about six, man you want players off the. Bench you
want him to come in and change the pace of
the game and change and kind of be a contrast
to what the starters do and trash came off the.
Minch he was different from what you got From zoos
or whoever you. ARE i don't know what whoever he
was playing, behind who was starting for The clippers or The, rockets,

whoever whatever team he was, on but he was a
change of.

Pace he was a pick and roll.

Big he was get in that, pocket finished at the,
realm shoot the, floater ran the floor crazy and, yeah
so like that that changing pace before having a different
type of player is big fourteen and.

Doing all that at what sixt', six sixt', seven being
able to hang with the big, boys bang, like that's
that's big.

Time an unfamiliar name that kind of sticks out like
a sore thumb on this. List james Hard you know
WHAT i? Mean James. Harden most most people won't believe
that he was the sixth man at one point part
of his career because he's been in the driver's seat
more than he's been on the. Bench but how effective
Was James? Harden, okay See.

James, Man, like first of, ALL i gotta get this
off AND i gotta let, know let d know about
my my six man. Take, Right so we talked about
it before you got a real six man and fake six?
Man are you a six man because you're playing behind
somebody that's better than, you? Right or are you a
Six are you a starter who's coming off the bench
just because the coach want to mix up the game

or you want you know you you you want to
play against backups or whatever the case may. Be And,
JAMES i Give james a benefit of a doubt because
he was so, young like he was the first, rookie
second third year in the. League everybody knew how good he,
was but it's it's it's always tough to slide into
it to a starting role on the championship caliber team
that they had over And, okay, see So i'm gonna

give him a benefit of a doubt and and call
him a real six man early on even though he
was he was starting level.

Talent, YEAH i mean to be, fair and winning that
award early on in his career versus catching it year,
six year, seven and you probably have kind of fluctuated
in the, lineup you, KNOW i, mean ideally he had
to earn that those who have played against him were
aware of his, talent but obviously you're you're playing Alongside
Kevin durant And Russell, West you're gonna have to defer some.

Things and then obviously when he got traded To, houston
he was able to break loose to mckel and you
know the rest of The rockets organization believed in him
to become the player he is. Today Eric, Gordon how
good Is Eric? Gordon Those clippers, Years, Rockets New Orleans,
Rockets you know WHAT i? Mean how important was he
to a roster having him come off the bench. Willingly

he's definitely he might be a fake starter to. Die
i'm not gonna.

Lie, yeah he was one of those he flip flopped
so he would start on one team and he like
he was still in his prime when he went to
The rockets and he came off the bench right so.

Because then he was still finished games. Too so it's
like it wasn't like he was a bad, defender but
it was one of those like he was a guy
that come, out step out to thirty, feet you got
to respect. It and then going, downhill like especially in
his younger, days he was just a bowling ball like
he was moving guys elbowing getting to the. Lane but

once he got To, houston it was basically like he
just went straight to space and like that was that,
was that was the known. Thing it was, like this
dude's gonna shoot from thirty.

Feet that's a whole other thing to range. Man and
when he let it, fly that's the show going. There,
yeah you know WHAT i. MEAN i think that's how
he made his money for, sure you know WHAT i.
MEAN i got a chance to watch him on college
and early on with The. Clippers we thought he was
gonna be a little bit you, know me on putting
the ball on the ground and midi and all, that
and he found his bread and butter with a deep,

three which is prolonged his, career you know WHAT i.
Mean he's been able to play for a very long
time and bounce around the. League that rocket system was
perfect for.

Him being With Dan, tony he reminded me Of barbosa
in a, sense Like downhill The street Obviously, Phoenix Quinn, Richardson,
yeah a big strong. Guard, yeah in the case Of Quinn,
richison but him And barbosa just got downhill pacing. Space
there was no bad shot and, yeah and they came
up the bitch and got to it And gordon one of,

once he came in the, game he wasn't coming.

go right to thirty. Feet but it was the same.
Thing vocal had a thing where he called it The Laser,
lineup and it was basically just five. Shooters it Was

katie at the Five Brad, Book Eric, gordon And Grayson allen,
okay and it was just drive space and it Was laser.
Lineup all all they did was shoot, threes one, person
break the, paint defense, collapse can't kick kick shoot threes

of years in the, LEAGUE i watched a couple of
vets and try to pick.

loose LIKE. JJ i WATCHED Jj burray a lot his
later years and picked up a lot of his his
routines and. Stuffy any people like you played with early
in your, Career any teammates years that you looked at
and SAID i could take a thing or two from.

Them oh, YEAH i mean. Definitely. ANDRE i Think Andrea
gudala was one of the main. Guys just like learning
how to take care of your. Body like WHEN i
first came in the. League you, KNOW i knew what work,
was BUT i didn't know what it meant to work
like a. Pro and seeing him just understand what your
diet lifting weights, LIKE i, MEAN i was fortunate enough

to be In Golden state from twenty eighteen to twenty twenty,
two so to see how those guys worked every single.
Day they lifted after every, game they did little micro
lifts before, games took care of their body their, diet
like that's the stuff that's actually helped me prolong my.
Career but then also like practice wise and. SHOOTING i

look at one, BASKET i see step shooting the next,
BASKET i See clay next, BASKET i SEE, KD i
See draymond And andre And Sean livingston even boogie that one.
Year i'm like and then obviously being coached By, Kerr i'm, like,
Damn i'm around Six hall of, Famers like IF i
don't get, better like you know WHAT i?

Mean, yeah, absolutely you mentioned Uh iggy right and again
another person right Who All? Star you know WHAT i?
Mean had could easily. Start he actually probably is one
of the most unselfish but also smart HIGH iq when
it comes to where's my career going with? THIS i

could be at Multiple All star and play for a subpar.
Team we get to the first, round we get knocked,
out OR i can buy into the. SYSTEM i could
Join Steph. CURRY i can you, know help broom these,
Players LIKE i, said you know you joining and seeing
that and understanding how to be a true vet sacrifice

in his, game he could have easily been a starter
elsewhere for a very long. Time he chose, saying you know,
What i'm gonna play this role to a T i'm
going to earn, it and became the model outside Of
LIKE i, said when you think About Jamal crawford And Lou,
williams they're the scoring six. Man when you think about
complete six, man that's you might get some points from,

me you might get some, threes you might get some,
defense you might get coaching on the you know WHAT i,
mean secondary coach on the, floor. Leadership there's so many
intangibles that kind of shape the locker room that he
brings to. It but it starts with his sacrifice because
if he don't do, that for, sure got it don't.

said that that different role that changed the. Pace it

man role and finding his wave and eventually like he
could come up the. Bench you can he come in
from anybody for one through. Four you can throw them the.
Ball he could get guys that, shots he could, score
he could guard. Everybody he he in that top five for,

Mvp like he started that series and started that playoff

play loved, HIM kt loved him because like when they
went to the bench to rest and him And andre

but like they weren't gonna lose the, Lead like they
weren't gonna have a bad. Night they're gonna run the
office the right way they're gonna. Guard he's gonna get

why they why they, UH i mean won so many
