Speaker 1 (00:06):
The conversation is still Sam Donald after not only a
career day for Sam Donald, but one of the best
quarterback performances in Minnesota Vikings franchise history. This was not
just a Sam Donald day where he threw for five
touchdown zero interceptions. Somehow has like a passer rating of
(00:30):
one hundred and fifty seven point nine instead of a
one fifty eight point three.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
What do you have to do to have a perfect passerating?
Who knows?
Speaker 1 (00:40):
And Kevin O'Connell mentioned that same thing in his postgame
speech to his players in the locker room. But the
conversation has shifted towards MVP for Sam Donald. You know,
early on in the year, it was oh, Sam Donald
for MVP, Sam for MVP. Danavlovsky put him in his
(01:02):
top five quarterbacks in terms of how they were playing
after the first four weeks of the season, and I
kind of poo pooed some of that stuff because there was.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
No way Sam Donald was going to be able to continue.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
That trajectory throughout the entire season, and he dipped mid
season against the Rams. Against the Lions, his completion percentage
was good, but you could tell that his effectiveness was
not as high, and you could tell that the way
he was playing the quarterback position was not as elite
as he was earlier in the season. He just was
(01:36):
not as in rhythm, He was not as consistent, He
wasn't delivering the kind of throws that we saw earlier
in the season. He was holding out of the football
way too long. He was targeting justin Jefferson tunnel vision style.
And now we've seen a shift, and this is the
biggest shift. And it's not that hard to figure out.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
You take a look at.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Jordan Andison this season and he missed a few weeks
at the beginning of the season following the Giants game
because of an ankle issue, came back versus Green Bay,
kint a touchdown pass, schooled their cornerback on a you know,
fake hitch and go route or whatever you call it.
(02:19):
And then you look at Jordan Aison's targets throughout the
season and Green Bay he had four targets, the Jets
he had eight targets, only three catches for thirty six yards.
Detroit he's targeted four times. The Rams he was targeted
three times. And here's the deal with the Rams game.
This is after he posted the free number three thing,
(02:41):
and according to ESPN Analytics, Jordan and Adison had an
open wide receiver percentage of ninety one percent and he
was targeted three times. So you don't have to look
much further than that to see the regression of Sam
Darnold varsus the Detroit Lions, Who's targeted four times, the Colts,
(03:05):
who's targeted five times, Jacksonville targeted five times.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
And then you see a shift in the Tennessee game.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Targeted eight times at Tennessee, targeted nine times, at Chicago,
targeted six times at Arizona, and last week against the
LNFL gets targeted twelve times. And this is a seismic
shift because what happened in the Jacksonville game. In the
Jacksonville game, every single interception Darnold had was an attempted
(03:35):
throw towards Justin Jefferson. The first one got batted away
by a defender, went right to another guy.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Okay, it happens.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
The next one he forced it to Justin Jefferson in
the end zone in double coverage, easy pick.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
And the third one he tried to get to.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Jefferson in the corner of the end zone, and it
was just a terrible throw. So we're seeing a shift
after the Jacksonville game two and of Donald having tunnel
vision towards Justin Jefferson. Donald is spreading the football around,
finding Hockinson, finding Addison, and still finding Justin Jefferson when
(04:15):
he needs to.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Against the Bears game.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
And against the Cardinals, Justin Jefferson did not have career days.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
He did against the Atlanta Falcons, did a good day against.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
The Falcons, But we are seeing a Donald that is
not solely focused on Jefferson and instead of using Jefferson's
strength of attracting two to three defenders on every single
play and spreading the football around to Addison, Hockinson, Aaron
(04:48):
Jones when he needs to. So that's why we're seeing
a change. That's why Donald is back to playing at
an MVP level. And you can credit Kevin O'Connell because
it was really obvious to me at least, and of
course it's going to be really obvious to the coaches
why Sam Darnold was struggling. And the coaches know just
(05:09):
how talented Jordan Addison is. That's why he's still on
the Vikings roster. You think Addison was a sixth round
pick who had a alleged DWI which he pled not
guilty for, and drove what one hundred and fifty miles
per hour because his dog was having an emergency before
(05:32):
even playing a practice with the Minnesota Do you think
a six round pick would be on the Vikings roster
or an undrafted free agent would be on the Vikings roster?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
And after those situations, the answer is no.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
But Aison is so talented that the Minnesota Vikings need
to keep them. And he is talented, and his talent
right now is way better than the problem or problems
that he has brought.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
To the Minnesota Vikings organization.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
And now that Addison is becoming a focal point in
the Minnesota Vikings offense, we are seeing Sam Darnold ascend
to a new level this season that we have not
yet seen this year.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
And that's the key.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Throw it up to Addison, give him a chance, and
on the deep ball to Addison, the first one where
he scored a touchdown, the underthrow. As a quarterback, as
a fan watching the game, as a studier of the game.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
It seems like.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
A quarterback that would rather I mean, if you hit
a receiver and stride, that's perfect.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
You don't walk right into the end zone.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
But if you had to choose whether you're gonna overthrow
a receiver or underthrow a receiver, under throwing a wide
receiver is the way better route because how many times
does a cornerback run into the run into the wide
receiver without looking back at the ball, and it's a
free forty yards, fifty yards, sixty yards sometimes depending on
(07:03):
how far the bomb was. So the fact that Darnald
underthrew the ball to Addison, his arm got hit, but
it was perfect, allowed Addison to make an adjustment on
the ball, come back and get it. The quarterback had
no idea Mike Cues I think it was former Minnesota
Viking great and Addison caught the ball walked into the
end zone. So if you're a quarterback in the NFL,
(07:25):
I don't understand why you wouldn't gear towards and underthrow
versus an overthrow, because so many good things happen because
of a quarterback underthrowing a football to a wide receiver
down the field. And that's what we saw on that
play and as a touchdown. But another one in the game,
(07:46):
Addison came back to get the ball pass interference. It happens,
and we saw it many times throughout the game versus
the Atlanta Falcons. The conversation now has shifted towards what
happens next year.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
I love Jake's take.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Yesterday, Jake delivered some of some beautiful takes on the
pot Yestera and I highly suggested taking a look at
that one because he made the case on why the
Vikings should re sign Sam Donald to a three year deal,
and he made the case why it would be good
for Donald and the Minnesota Vikings organization. And I didn't,
(08:22):
you know, refute him much. I just kind of listened
to it and enjoyed it because it was juicy and
had good nuggets, and it was educated and it made sense.
But here's why the Minnesota Vikings are not going to
resign Sam Donald one just for context sake. Adam Schefter
(08:43):
reported recently that Sam Donald and the Minnesota Vikings have
had no discussions on a contract extension during the season,
and insiders are all starting to get into it. Ben Gesling,
who is an insider the Star Tribune. He has his
own podcast called Access Vikings The Purple Persuasion who always delivers,
(09:07):
says I don't think they're going to sign Sam Donald
after the season. Per Ben Gesling via Access, Vikings Guestling
mentions that the plan, the approach the whole time has
been JJ McCarthy and that the Vikings are not going
to say any.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Of this publicly. Of course they're not.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
The Minnesota Vikings are the best at keeping secrets in
the NFL. They never share their mind, they never share
what's going actually happening. But here's why the Vikings are
not resigning Sam Donald long term. They just got out
of Kirk Cousins' contract and they want a fresh new face,
(09:46):
a guy that they believe in, a guy that they
invested a top ten pick in to.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Be their quarterback of the future. Donald is entering his prime.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
So there's a case to made on resigning Sam Donald
to a three year deal, letting it ride, and letting
Jaj McCarthy, Paula Jordan Love and sit.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Behind him for a few years. And there's nothing wrong
with that.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
But if you do re sign Sam Donald, all of
the salary cap flexibility that Quezi worked so hard and
pulled so many strings to do.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Is gone.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
You were cap strung by Kirk Cousins for years and
you couldn't make the moves you wanted to make because
you're paying Kirk Cousins forty five fifty million dollars a year.
And now that Cousins is gone, you have this flexibility,
You have this money to spend in needed places. And
the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff has proven that whose ever
(10:53):
quarterback has had success on the Minnesota Vikings. Kirk Cousins
a few years ago, has a career with Kean O'Connell.
Sam Donald this year career year.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
With Kevin O'Connell.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
They drafted JJ McCarthy because they believe in JAJ McCarthy
and they were going to pursue that route because of
their belief in JJ McCarthy. They did not draft JJ
McCarthy because they felt they needed to draft j McCarthy
and grabbed a quarterback out of fear that they wouldn't
grab them later on. They grabbed him because they had
(11:25):
belief in faith in the quarterback. So they are not
going to deviate from that plan. Put themselves in a
difficult salary cap situation by re signing or franchised taking
Sam Donald for many years for a bunch of money.
When they just got out of that situation, they drafted
(11:47):
McCarthy to replace Cousins eventually, so that they could have
a rookie quarterback while paying so many other players around
JJ McCarthy. That's the road to the super Bowl. That's
the way the big boys do it. And then when
JJ McCarthy as sends to being good enough, you would
(12:08):
hope then you can start to get rid of those
rid of some of those players and you pay him
the big contract. And then when you pay the quarterback
the big contract, the Minnesota Vikings got to do something
that they haven't really been successful at doing. You gotta
get draft picks in the first, second, third, fourth round
that can play right away. That's the way to do it.
(12:29):
That's the way the Chiefs have done it. That's the
way the good teams do it. They have a rookie quarterback,
they pay the players around him, they go to a
super Bowl or two, they pay that quarterback, and after
they pay that quarterback, they find complimentary picks in the first, second, third, fourth,
fifth round that can play right away on many contracts
(12:54):
that donated up the salary cap space. That's the plan
for the Minnesota Vikings, and right now they are not
going to ruin that plan because Sam Donald had one
career year. What happens if he resigned Sam Donald to
a three year deal and next year he regresses. I mean,
(13:14):
these are all conversations that need to be had because
as good as Sam Donald has been this year twenty
eight touchdowns, ten picks, there's no guaranteeing that he's gonna
be able to do it again next year. There's no
guaranteeing that.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
This is.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
That he can duplicate his success this season. So Donald
is not going to be a Minnesota Viking next year
because one for him, he is going to get the
biggest dollar on the market and he should. Is the
one time in his career that he.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Can do that that he's played so good to do that.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Now, if I was Sam Donald, I would try to
get that big money. But staying with the Minnesota Vikings
is attracted to a sense of like, Okay, I could
keep this for a few years, but no, this is
the splash. This is his time to go to the
market and receive big bucks because he hasn't really had
(14:10):
that opportunity yet and this is his one time to
do it, and it just it's gonna be a split
that is agreed upon on both sides. Donald wants the
big market splash and the Minnesota Vikings want to pursue
JJ McCarthy as QB one. There's not going to be
(14:32):
any animosity towards it. It's not like a kirk Cousins
animosity situation, where not that the Vikings had any animosity
with kirk Cousins, but kirk Cousins had animosity with the
Minnesota Vikings because they knew he was going to replace
him with j. J. McCarthy or some rook at quarterback,
(14:52):
and they didn't pay him the contract that kirk Cousins
thought he was deserved. So in some sense, kirk Cousins
has animosity towards the Vikings organization.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
But Sam Donald shouldn't.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
The Vikings resurrected his career by giving him a chance.
Half ten percent of the one hundred million guaranteed he
signs this offseason should go to the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Because they restored his career.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
So it's going to be a split, It's going to
be an agreed upon split, and it's going to be
good for both parties. So that's the plan. That's the
thing with Sam Darnald. Thanks for making this podcast part
every day and going on this journey with me
