Minnesota Tim discusses the upcoming NFL Draft and the various mock drafts predicting the Minnesota Vikings' selections. He emphasizes the unpredictability of player performance and the importance of addressing the Vikings' needs, particularly in the offensive line. Tim argues for the selection of a left guard to strengthen the team and protect the quarterback, while also acknowledging the potential for any drafted player to succeed or fail.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome into the show today.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Thank you for making this podcast a part of your
day and for going on this podcasting journey with me.
Hit that subscribe button if you're watching on YouTube or
if you're listening somewhere else, so this podcast will show
up in your feet Monday through Saturday. The mock draft
and the NFL Draft is less than four thursdays away.

(00:32):
It's about three thursdays away late April, and now tons
of mock drafts are coming on. I just reading something
where it had this guy from the Athletic has the
Vikings picking a safety, This guy from the Athletic has
the Vikings picking a corner, this guy from Yahoo has
the Vikings picking a defensive tackle, this guy has the

(00:56):
Vikings picking an offensive linement. And mock drafts are fun
and I get the purpose of it. It creates an
environment of excitement leading up to the NFL Draft, and
at this point of the NFL offseason, there are hardly
any topics to discuss except for the possibility of Aaron

(01:21):
Rodgers landing with the Vikings. And I feel like this
podcast has covered every single Aaron Rodgers to the Vikings
possibility in the last three weeks and I take a
look at the Vikings positions of needs, and I'm not
going to mock because you take a look at all

(01:42):
of these predictions and all of these different mocks, and
you could argue that all of them makes sense.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
You could provide some depth a defensive tackle.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
The Vikings still are week at cornerback Yron Murphy that
brought in Rogers from the Eagles, and who else do
they really have? Mikay Blackman might be coming off a
torn acl and hopefully he's ready to be healthy in
to play next year. Offensivelignment your shirt up the center

(02:12):
and the right guard position, but who's playing left guard
next to Christian Derrisa.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
So you see these different mock.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Drafts that you could argue that every single one of
them makes sense. So I'm not going to explain why
the Vikings shouldn't select a safety or why it makes
zero sense for the Vikings to select a corner but rather,
I'm going to make a case on why I believe
the Vikings should select the position that is one of

(02:46):
the positions.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
That are being talked about.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
And my ideal scenario for the Vikings in this NFL
draft is for them to pick a left guard next
to Christian Derisa. And let's just get one thing out
there first. We have no idea how any of these

(03:09):
players are going to pan out. A first round pick
might be a bust, a seventh round pick might be
a starter. An undrafted free agents might be the best
player in this draft. So you think about all of
the due diligence that NFL general managers and scouts do

(03:33):
on every single player entering the NFL draft, and yet
tons of players always slipt through their fingers, become undrafted
free agents and becomes studs. So what that tells me
is that these undrafted free agents.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Think about this for a second.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
These undrafted NFL free agents become better players then guys
that have first round grades. There is going to be
a first round grade and a first round player selected
in this draft that is a worse player than a

(04:17):
guy that doesn't get selected at all and sign somewhere
and becomes a player that can play. That's fascinating to me.
And what that tells me is that it's all a crapshoot.
Everything's a guess. You can try to make as calculated
the guests as you want, and you can try your

(04:37):
best to estimate how good a player is going to
be in the NFL, but at the end of the day,
it's a complete guess. So I'm not gonna sit up
here and say, well, the Vikings are going to draft
this left guard and he's going to become a stud
and the Vikings offositive line is just going to get

(05:00):
even better. And I'm not going to set up here
and say that about any other position that the Vikings
could draft in the draft. I'm not gonna sit up
here and say, well, if the Vikings draft a corner,
well there's a Day one starter. If the Vikings draft
the corner, that locks up the other side and it
allows Yer Murphy to play slot if he wants to, and.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Everything's figured out.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
When you're discussing the NFL draft, everything comes with a
caveat for every position. Doesn't matter if their cornerback, kicker,
defensive tackle, offensive lineman, or punter. Everything comes with a caveat.
So with all that said, the Vikings should look to

(05:46):
draft a capable oppositive lineman hopefully is capable, and pair
him next to Ryan Kelly and Christian Derisa. Defensive tackle
is solidified right now. Jonathan Allen Hargrave. Harrison Phillips is

(06:09):
still on the roster right now, so you already have
depth at that position. Plus I'm not entirely sure about
where Redmond stands, but it came on strong at the
end of the last season and really provided depth and

(06:30):
strength at that position, even got a game ball out
of it, So I'm not concerned about the defensive tackle,
although the Vikings have had several meetings with defensive tackles
and have done their due due diligence on them. They
also had a meeting with cam Ward, who's likely to
go number one overall in the NFL Draft. The next

(06:53):
position corner because really the Vikings depth at corner is
not too much, and the Vikings are so reliant on
their front four front five getting pressure on the quarterback

(07:16):
that hopefully it alleviates some of the pressure put on
the secondary. Any god, here's the Smith back there. You
have re signed Theo Jackson, and I saw some people
mocking safety to the Vikings, but I think you could
wait one more year on that, and I think the

(07:37):
target for the Vikings should be a guard because right
now you've got Brian O'Neil, will Fries, Ryan Kelly blank
Christian Derrisa. That blank is filled by Blake Brandle Walter Rouss.

(07:59):
It's a big, gaping hole, and what better than to
secure your quarterback, hopefully your franchise quarterback, with one of
these strongest offensive lines in football if this player becomes
a legitimate starter. Just a few years ago, the Vikings
selected ed Ingram out of LSU, and we all know

(08:23):
how that worked out. Got bench for Dalton Reisner last season.
So I think because of the Viking situation at quarterback,
and because of how long they're waiting to design a backup,
because of the whole comp pick formula, they're not getting
one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league. You

(08:46):
think about the best backups, Mac Jones, Gardner Minshew, those
are the two guys that come to my mind, and
those guys are already gone. So if McCarthy goes down
with an injury and you need to bring in a
backup quarterback to be serviceable either for a week or

(09:11):
two or throughout the entire season, if you don't want
your season to go down the crap shoot, then having
a guard next to Christian Dearsaw becomes all that more
valuable because who are you turning to you don't want
a big hole on your offensive lineman, and that's the

(09:35):
hole that causes an injury to your QB one because
if he goes down, who's the guy? It's probably Aaron
Rodgers probably what it ends up being. So as much
as the Vikings could use another corner or safety, you

(09:56):
could argue any of these positions, I would argue that
the Vikings should target another opposite lineman just to complete
the front five up strong.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
So that's my thoughts on that.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
