Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Grind, a Minnesota sports podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
This is the Grind Day Minnesota sports podcast because it's
been over twelve thousand days since the Minnesota sports scene
in one of the four major sports for you offended,
Minnesota Lynks fans have won a major title, the Minnesota

(00:27):
Twins Jack Morris nineteen ninety one.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Welcome into the show.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
My name is Tim and I'm the host of this
podcast about Minnesota sports. It is a grind to be
a Minnesota sports fan. But what's so exciting is that
the Minnesota Vikings are opening training camp and all players
are expected to report this week, specifically tomorrow, and rookies

(00:56):
and some veterans have already report hoarded to the organization
yesterday on Sunday, God's Day. And on today's show, I've
got a loaded list of topics. I first need to
tell you to beware because this is the particular part

(01:24):
of year where we can't lose our shiit because something
looked really cool.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
So that's going to be the first.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Topic, and then later I'm going to share my Minnesota
Vikings team awards going.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Into this season. So all of that is happening on
today's show.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
But first I need to tell you about five Star
Best Solutions in Minneapolis because they transformed our bathroom in
forty eight hours, new floor, new shower, new tub, new surround.
We had a mouldi bathroom and it was disgusting and unhealthy.
But we didn't want to wait eight weeks for this

(02:13):
bathroom project.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
To get done.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
And then I found five Star Bass Solutions of Minneapolis
and they transformed our bathroom into forty eight hours. Everything
is new and different. We went from a single to
a double stink which we love to wash your hands
at the same time as phenomenal, a new mirror, vanity countertops, floor, shower, surround.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Tub, everything.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Five Star Bas Solutions of Minneapolis gave us our bathroom
masterpiece and forty eight hours and increase the value of
our home. Contact five Star Bath Solutions of Minneapolis to
get your bathroom masterpiece done today. All right, now, I

(02:59):
need to explain you need to beware. Training camp season
is hype season for every NFL organization, from the best
to the worst. It is hype season because right now
it doesn't matter what you did last season. Every single

(03:21):
team going into the year has hope that it could.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Be their year.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Even the Cleveland Browns fans, an organization thinks they could
get one more good year out of Joe Flacco, or
they think that should do or Sanders could be that
guy they drafted in the fifth round.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
You go from the top of the league to the
bottom of the league. That's what the NFL does.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
It gives every fan base and every organization hope that
their team could be good. And what's so funny about
that is that you start the season ah in two
and all the build up, all the hype, all the
excitement throughout the entire rough seasons, off, we drafted this guy,

(04:15):
we signed this guy, we added this player or this coach,
and our team's gonna be different and it's gonna look new.
You start zero and two and the season is basically over.
It's so funny.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
There's so much hope, and yet that hope.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Is taken away so quickly in the NFL if you
start poorly. And that's the best part about the NFL.
But this season, this part of the season is beware
season because it's not just about the team releasing a

(04:51):
video or some player or coach or manager speaking at
a press conference hyping up McCarthy or the defensive line
or the new offensive line. It's about those slow motion
videos that Minnesota Vikings fans get boners over and lose

(05:18):
their shiit over, because you watch a video.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Enough times and you can start to convince yourselves that
this is the year I've done this before.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Looking at houses, you look at a house enough times
and you start to fall in love with the house
before you even look at the house. You pull up
Zillo and you pull up some houses and you start
falling in love with the house before you even know
what the house even is. Because just like training camp

(05:54):
videos and just like Zillow pictures of houses, the crevices,
the corners, the scrapes, the parts that you need to redo,
the parts that you need to work on, the parts
that you need to put projects towards, is not.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Showcased, is not focused. But then you.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Start living in it, you start touring it. You start
to see what's going on in preseason, and he started
to see what's happening in the regular season. Then those
areas that are not quite as refined as a training
camp video or a Zillow picture isn't as crisp as
you once thought it was.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Look at this video that was posted a few days ago.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Of JAJ McCarthy and Justin Jefferson walking in slow motion
throwing the ball to each other at Woodburg.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
He has look at this throw.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Oh yeah, Minnesota Vikings fans just orgas I'm watching JJ
McCarthy throw that pass. I'll look at a block with
that little smile. Minnesota Vikings fans lose their stuff over
this kind of thing. A quarterback throwing with no line,
no defense, pg Howkinson doing a simple in route.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
JJ doing a simple out and then back in route.
Vikings fans loose there. Oh, look at that spiral. I'll
look at that leap into the end zone.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Look at the chemistry building between quarterback and wide receiver.
This is what it takes to be great. That's why
this is beware season. It is beware season because oh,
JJ McCarthy dropping back to all slow motion. Oh, beautiful

(07:51):
throw with no defense, no lineman, no pass rush.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
Amazing throw. That throw is gonna make JJ McCarthy the
elite quarterback.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
You've got to be careful because if you watch that
video enough times, you can start to convince yourself that
McCarthy is the best quarterback in the league. If you
watch that video enough times, you can start to look
past the obvious facts that McCarthy is going to be

(08:25):
a first year starter in the NFL and it's going
to be the youngest QB starting in the NFL this season,
and that recipe, those ingredients do not produce a Super

(08:45):
Bowl champion.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
I'm a Minnesota Vikings fans. Everyone's gonna hate me, like, oh,
you're not a true fan. What is a true fan?
I am a true fan.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
I look at things objectively and I say, you know what,
this is a slow motion video that's trying to get
the Minnesota Vikings fans excited, which it is.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
It is getting them excited.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
It is doing what it was meant to do by
creating hype and excitement around the organization.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
And you look at the team and the roster and.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
The additions and the free agents, and it seems like
everything should come together to produce a champion this season.
But you also have to look at things objectively and
as exciting as it is to have JJ McCarthy be
QB one, which I'm excited for as well, you cannot

(09:38):
look past the obvious facts of the situation and understand
that teams.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
With a QB.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
JJ McCarthy's age and with JJ McCarthy's experience, do not
win Super both in their first year.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
And the average.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Winner of QB's to win Super Bowls the last ten years,
it's like thirty three years old. McCarthy is going to
be twenty three in late January. So just be aware

(10:27):
of slow mo Kyle Anderson season, because you watch the
slow motion video and it's easy to get excited and
it's easy to.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Lose grasp of reality, just.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Like a Zillow picture can make you fall in love
with the house. You've got to be careful about these
slow motion videos. Just saying it's training camp season, which
means it's slow most season. Okay, Minnesota Vikings Team Awards.

(11:07):
But first I need to tell you about Hoakland Farms
Beef because their beef is the best in the market.
Jared has rotationally grazed on grass fed beef. You go
to a store, you try to buy a steak or
a truck roast, and you're looking at seven to eight
dollars a pound. Hokland Farms Beef has it for around

(11:28):
four dollars a pound. Everything from one pound beef to
sirloin steaks to tuck rows that are delicious Hoakland Farms
Beef nine five two four nine one five four one.
Tell Jared they heard about it from Tim and he'll
give you a little discount. Hoakland Farms nine five two

(11:50):
four one five four one for the best rotationally grace.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Grass fed beef.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
Stop wondering what's in your beef? Contact Hoakland Farms and
get the best two four four one all right.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Team Awards. This is kind of fun.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
I saw this on X the other day by the
Purple Persuasion, the best Twitter account in the world. It's
not even close if you're a Minnesota Vikings fan.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
And he shared his team Awards.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
And he quoted a tweet from Jordan Silveria, who considers
himself a football junkie. So he started it, Purple Persuasion
continued it, and now I'm gonna continue it as well.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
So it's team Awards. You've got MVP, Rookie.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player
of the Year, Most Improved X Factor, the Skull Award,
and Best Newcomer. And I've got my list. The Minnesota
Vikings offensive line is my MVP of the twenty twenty

(13:03):
five twenty twenty six season because the running game was
better last year with Aaron Jones. But if McCarthy and
the Vikings offense want to accomplish the things that they
want to accomplish, the combinations of Christian Darrisaw, Donovan Jackson,

(13:27):
Ryan Kelly will Fries and Brian O'Neill need to produce
at a top five offensive line in the NFL to
get the whole play action thing going, to get the
whole running game going to alleviate pressure from the passing game.
The MVP of the season for the Vikings is the

(13:53):
offensive line. The Rookie of Year. This one's pretty obvious,
Donovan Jackson. I looked at the picks the Vikings selected
in the two to the Austin twenty five NFL Draft,
and Donovan Jackson is going to be the only.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
Player that gets.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Minutes, gets starting opportunities on a consistent basis. So he's
the offensive Rookie of the Year and defensive Rookie the year.
The offensive player of the Year, this one's easy and
Justin Jefferson best wide receiver in football arguably and easily
the best wide receiver in football that does not bring

(14:36):
drama with him, which is why I would choose him
over any wide receiver in the league.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Defensive Player of the Year.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Now, this one's tricky because you've got a lot of
different pieces to this puzzle. Could be Byron Murphy, could
throw in Josh Mttellis, that's a Swiss Army knife.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
Could bring in one of the new.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
Players like Jonathan Allen or Javon Hargrave or Andrew van Ginkel,
Jonathan Grenard who had good seasons last year. My opinion
goes to Blake Cashman. I love me some Blake Cashman.
When the Vikings were playing their best football last year, defensively,

(15:16):
Blake Cashman was steering the ship, calling out shifts, calling
out the plays. Blake Cashman is the defensive player of
the Year for the Minnesota Vikings.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
Most Improved.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Now, this one's tricky because you can go a lot
of different directions.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
On this one. But also not really.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Because Andrew van Ginko, Jonathan Gernard, those guys aren't going
to be most improved. They had pretty good seasons last year.
I saw someone write Jeff akudah. I think that was
the Purple Persuasion. Jeff Akuda is what the Purple Persuasion wrote.
Very good name and hard to disagree with that name.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
My name goes to Jalen Naylor.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
With Jordan Addison's suspension likely coming because although he got
off on a lesser scale, called it like a wet
dream or something like that, wet driving, He's still going
to get disciplined from the NFL. So most improved Jalen Naylor.

(16:33):
He was wide receiver three last year, but in the
first few games of the season when Addison got injured,
Jalen Naylor was a very competent wide receiver two.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
And Jalen Naylor kind of plays that.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
kJ Osborne role. kJ Osborne was wide receiver three, but
had moments where he could step in and be wide
receiver two. When the Vikings had the against the Indianapolis
Colts down thirty three zero, kJ Osborne was a major
contributor to that comeback. And with Addison being suspended for

(17:15):
the first three games, maybe this really opens up a
possibility for Jalen Naylor, in a contract year, to really
have a good NFL season. The X factor I wrote
a combination of two players, Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave

(17:41):
because if the Minnesota Vikings defense wants to be as
dominant as they.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
Hope to be.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
These two players that they spent big money on this
offseason need to dominate the trenches. If the second deary
wants to perform at a high level, the Iron Murphy's,
the Makaia Blackbns, the Isaiah Rodgers is.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
If these guys want to perform.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
At a high level, the highest level they could achieve,
it's going to be because the combination of Jonathan Allen
and Javon Hargrave are dominating the trenches.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
So that's my ex factor.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
The Skull Award hard to argue for anybody except for
Harrison Smith because he is going to retire as a
Minnesota Viking and has taken contract, has taken less in
his contract to stay with the Purple, which is cool,

(18:50):
and he'll be in the Ring of Honor, he'll be
a Hall of Famer. And you think about the identity
of the Minnesota Vikings, the player that bleeds the most purple,
and Harrison Smith is that guy.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Best newcomer.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
Again, you could go down a couple different rabbit trails
with the Jonathan Allen and.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
The Javon Hargrave and.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
The Will Fries and Ryan Kelly, but my name goes
to Jordan Mason because it alleviates pressure from Aaron Jones.
Jordan Mason will be a much better contributor than ty Chandler,
and he allows the Vikings to have a better scoring

(19:44):
red zone threat because of his size and strength.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
And it allows Aaron Jones.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
To be used sporadically throughout the game, which is gonna
keep him healthier and fresher. And that's why we saw
Aaron Jones so fresh last year because the Vikings were
able to spread the love around between a couple of
different guys and Aaron Jones was healthy for most of

(20:12):
last season. And with Jordan Mason in the fold, Aaron
Jones should be even fresher and healthier and ready to
perform at a high level.

Speaker 1 (20:29):
So that's the show for.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
Today, Minnesota Vikings Team Awards and Beware. It's Beware season,

four five four one. Tell Jared you heard about it
