Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Grind, a Minnesota sports podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Welcome into the Grind, where it is a grind being
a Minnesota sports fan. My name is Tim and I'm
the host of the Minnesota Sports Podcast. Today we're gonna
talk about J. J. McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings because
training camp opens today. But there was another story coming
(00:26):
out of Chicago about the.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Bears and J J.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
McCarthy that's kind of juicy, so we're gonna talk about
that today. But first I need to tell you about
five Star Best Solutions of Minneapolis, because they transformed our
bathroom in forty eight hours, the entire thing from floors
to the shower, to the tub, to the surround, to
(00:54):
the countertops.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
To the vanity to the mirror.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
From this, we went from a single to a double
sink in our bathroom, which we love.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
It's our favorite feature.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
To be able to brush your teeth and wash your
hands at the same time is so convenient.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Five Star Bath.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Solutions of Minneapolis got our project done in forty eight hours.
Don't wait eight weeks for a bathroom project to get done.
Call five Star Bess Solutions of Minneapolis and get your
transformation done in forty eight hours. It's amazing, it's convenient,
it's affordable, and they have free consultations and affordable payment plans.
(01:35):
Five star Bath Solutions of Minneapolis. All Right, before I
dive into jaj McCarthy, I want to talk about a
few jokes that I thought of the other day.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Joey Chestnut.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Obviously the greatest hot dog eating champion in the world,
and nobody can beat him because he is unstoppable, a
force that can stuff done down his.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Throat like no one ever. And then.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
I thought of somebody that could beat Joey Chestnut. There
is one person that could beat Joey Chestnut, one person
in the world, and it's not who you might think.
(02:29):
The person who could beat Joey Chestnut is only fans
creator Bonnie Blue, who slept with one thousand men in
just twelve hours recorded. If we're talking about hot dogs,
(02:52):
the only person that could beat Joey Chestnut.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Is the all time slut in the entire world, oh
by Hard.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
So if Joey Chestnut wants to go down, just like
the race car driver intleigated Tela Daga Knights came to
the United States to be beaten by Ricky Bubby, then
Joey Chestnut needs to go against Bonnie Blue.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
All right, that's joke number one. Joke number two.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
I thought about this one the other night, right before
I went to bed, and the premise of the joke
is that I didn't realize how much I loved myself.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
And I don't think you realize how much you love yourself.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
So as I've been married for four years, over four years,
I've realized that I'm becoming more like my wife, and
my wife is becoming more like me.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Our habits become similar.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
She's doing things that I do, I'm doing things that
she does, and I love my wife more and more
each and every day. Each and every day, I love
my wife more, but each and every day she becomes.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
More and more like me.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
So in a way, it showcases how much I love myself, because,
for example, if I let a big fart rip underneath
the covers, I think that's funny. If she does the
same thing, then that's funny and it's enjoyable. I did
(04:44):
not realize just how much I loved myself until I
saw my wife becoming more and more like me, and
then I figured out I'm loving her more and more
each day.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Just something to think about, something to ponder. Anyways, This is.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
The Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins and wild podcasts and Gophers and links.
This is Minnesota Sports podcast. Let's talk about Minnesota sports.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
There was a report the alec Lewis.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
The Athletic, the Athletic dot Com and it says this
about Jaj McCarthy and the Chicago Bears. Ryan Poles was
talking about how much they loved Jaj McCarthy. The QB
coach said this is Greg Hulcombe sharing this with Alec Lewis.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
So alec Lewis's source was.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Not Ryan Poles. The source was Greg Hulcombe, the QB coach.
He continues and said to me, I don't think people
realize how close we were to possibly taking him.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Obviously they love Caleb, but I thought.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
That was interesting Greg Holcombe on his conversation with Bear's
GM Ryan Pouls. So, based on that report, the Chicago
Bears were debating between Caleb Williams and the tenth overall
(06:25):
pick JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Now, it's tough to.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Repute reports like this because I obviously was.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Not in the room with the GM or the QB coach.
But it's also easy to say.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
That the Chicago Bears were never going to draft JJ McCarthy,
and some of it was because of the unanimous pressure
on the Chicago Bears to draft a player that was
(07:16):
the consensus number one overall pick. This isn't Draft Day,
this is real life. And when there is a consensus
number one overall pick, the consensus number one overall pick,
(07:36):
ninety nine times out of one hundred gets selected. Not
including the fact that Jaden Daniels went number two and
Drake May went number three and j. J. McCarthy fell
(07:58):
to number ten. The Chicago Bears were never going to
draft Jason McCarthy because if they did and Caleb Williams
went two or three when he was the consensus number
(08:18):
one overall pick, and then he becomes a stud in
his rookie season, then.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
It would have been.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Ryan Polls his last job in the NFL as a
general manager. But even if Caleb Williams is a bust
for the Bears, he was the consensus number one overall
pick that everybody agreed on, and even if he's a bust,
(08:57):
Ryan Polls was not out of his mind for selecting him.
Everybody agreed with that selection because of his arm talent,
his pocket awareness, and she can go in the future
once he gets fired from the Chicago Bears, because eventually
(09:18):
he will. All general managers and head coaches eventually get fired.
Even Bill Belichick, the greatest head coach in the NFL,
got fired after Tom Brady left and they couldn't win
games anymore.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
He can go to his next team and.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Show that team decisions that he made that were based
on the percentage chance of that thing happening. So I
see this report. Paul's was talking about how much they
loved Jason McCarthy and said to me, I don't think
people realize how close we were to possibly taking him.
(10:02):
The key word in this quote is possibly. It doesn't
say I don't think people realize how close we were
to taking him. It says, I don't think people realize
how close we were to possibly taking him. So it
(10:23):
doesn't say that he was the number two overall QB
on their list of qbs in that draft. It shows
that they possibly considered his name on the list of
qbs that they would take. And as much as the
(10:49):
Vikings have shared their praises of j. J. McCarthy and
his work ethic, which deserves praise because his work ethic
is legit and that is the greatest strength of his game.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
The Vikings were not.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Going to pick Jajon McCarthy if they had their list
of qbs that were available all draft day and night
until the selection was made. There were reports that the
Vikings were doing their best to trade up for either
(11:39):
the number two or number three overall pick and select
Jane and Daniels or Drake May. Everyone can say how
much the Vikings trust and love McCarthy, but McCarthy was not.
The Vikings won a option. It was one A jayde
(12:00):
and Daniels, one B Drake May, and then one C
two A or three A Jajon McCarthy. Because there was
report after report, I'm gonna look it up right now,
(12:21):
that the Vikings were looking to trade up to number
three AI Overview.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
According to ESPN, there.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Were reports that the Minnesota Vikings were actively trying to
trade up to the New England Patriots number three overall
pick in the twenty twenty four NFL Draft to select
quarterback Drake May. The Vikings reportedly offered their two first
round picks, number eleven and number twenty three, plus a
future first round pick and pick swaps favoring Minnesota. The
(12:54):
Patriots turned down the offer, ultimately drafting Drake May. The
Vikings did not even want Jajon McCarthy. McCarthy fell into
their laps. They traded one overall spot to get them
because they needed a QB. Kirk Cousins wasn't coming back,
(13:18):
so they needed somebody. McCarthy fell into the lap of
the Vikings, and the Vikings were practically forced to take McCarthy.
And the reason why I say that is to put
further questionable questionability. Questionability is to put further skepticism.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Yes, yes, I got it. Whoo, I thought I was
gonna get I didn't know if I was gonna get there.
I didn't know I was gonna get there.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
You know, sometimes I get stuck on a word for
so long, get stuck on a word, and it's like, gosh,
what was that word? And then I'm done recording the
podcast and it's like that was the word.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Or sometimes you're listening in.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
The car on the radio and you're listening to whoever
and they can't think of a word, but then the
word automatically comes to you because the pressure isn't there,
but the pressure of thinking of words. Sometimes takes a
minute to get the word, but I got them eventually,
I got it. I really don't know what he said
(14:34):
at the end of this, and I don't think he
knows what he said either.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Skepticism skepticism The Vikings.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Had skeptic I remember going with this, The Chicago Bears
report that they wanted to draft McCarthy has lots of
skepticism because the Vikings didn't even want to draft my Karthy.
They wanted to draft Drake May and offered multiple first
(15:07):
round picks to try to get Drake May. So I
see this report coming from Alec Lewis, which is really
coming from Greg Holcombe who shared the conversation that he
had with Ryan Poles. And you read the report for
(15:27):
what it's worth, and it's like the Bears wanted McCarthy,
But you do a little investigative deep dive and you
will find out that they didn't really want McCarthy. They
possibly could have took him. Okay, if we're gonna go
through the things of possibilities, you could have an endless
(15:52):
series of conversations and allegend things. I mean possibly. The
word possibly that is one of those words that could
go on forever, so I don't buy.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
It, not buying it at all. The Bears didn't almost
draft McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
They possibly almost took mcorthy possibly, ay kidding me. My
tiny little nuts possibly went to Mars. I'm tiny little
and my tiny little nipples almost went to France. That's
from Bruce Almighty. Anyways. Possibly that word. I hate that word.
(16:43):
It's a fun word because it creates conversation. But they
almost possibly took McCarthy.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Possible.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Anyways, thank you for joining the show and I hope
this was fun for you.
