Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Grind, a Minnesota sports podcast. There's a reason why
this podcast is called the.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Grind, and what we saw at the Major League Baseball
trade deadline is exactly why this podcast is called the Grind,
because being a Minnesota sports fan is an absolute grind.
What we saw from the Minnesota Twins organization yesterday ahead

(00:33):
of the Major League Baseball trade deadline is something that
Major League Baseball may have never seen before, and we're
gonna dive into it and we're gonna.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Talk about it today. The historic Minnesota Twins trade deadline
deals where they departed with eleven players. It was incredible
to follow, to witness to see what was happening, and
I can't wait to talk about it. I hardly talk

(01:05):
about the Twins, and I can't wait to talk about
the story that we saw unfold yesterday before the trade deadline.
But first I need to tell you about five Star
Bath Solutions of Minneapolis, because they transformed our bathroom in
forty eight hours, from new floors, to the new shower,

(01:28):
to a new tub. They got rid of mold in
our shower. We didn't have to outsource that new countertops.
We went from a single to a double sink, vanity mirror.
They remodeled our entire bathroom and we had it back
in forty eight hours. Don't wait eight weeks and cram
into your teeny tiny bathroom in the basement of your

(01:51):
house while you're trying to get ready for work while
your kids are trying to get ready for school. What
if you have to both poop at the same time.
That sounds terrible. Five Star Bass Solutions of Minneapois had
our bathroom done in forty eight hours. Full bathroom of models,
affordable payment plans, free consultations. Five Star Bath Solutions of Minneapolis.

(02:13):
Contact them today and get your bathroom done on time,
done right, and get your masterpiece done in forty eight hours.
All right. The Minnesota Twins traded eleven players, and let's
get the list of these eleven players on the screen,
because this is unreal. Harrison Bader traded to the Phillies.

(02:41):
Brock Stewart traded to the Dodgers. Carlos Carrea returns home
to the Houston Astros. Danny Columbine now he say his name,
traded to the Rangers. Will Castro, Cubs, Griffin Rays, Louis

(03:02):
Varland and ty France Blue Jays and then there's the arrivals.
I don't know if anyone recognized as a single player
in the arrival list, but that's eleven players that the
Twins traded before the Major League Baseball trade deadline. This

(03:29):
is as historical as it gets unbelievable. Look at this.
The Twins traded eleven players prior to the trade deadline.
They made thank you graphics for seven of them. Those
that didn't make the cut Randy Dobnick Typrance, Danny Columbine,

(03:50):
and Harrison Bader. This is one of those stories that
you can't believe is until you've read it multiple times.
And who I really feel for is the Minnesota Twins

(04:11):
social media team. Sure they traded eleven players, but could
you imagine the amount of social media graphics that they
had to create in a limited amount of time. We're
going to miss you. Best of luck in Chicago, Willie.

(04:34):
We have finalized the trader of the Chicago Cups. We
have completed the following trade of the Tampa Bay Race.
Thank you Griffin, the Minnesota Kid. Thank you Louis Trade Alert,
Thank you Carlos Korea, Thank you ce for. We have

(04:57):
finalized the trade of the Houston Astros. We have comp
the trade of the Rangers. Nobody was busier yesterday, not
even the Minnesota Twins' president of baseball operations Derek Felvey.
Then the Minnesota Twins social media team. Thank you, Brock Stewart.

(05:22):
It just keeps a going and going. Thank you. Johann
Duran traded to the Phillies. And all of this happens
after the Twins lost to the Red Sox thirteen to one.

(05:42):
If anything indicates a fire sale, it's Cody Clemens pitching
the ninth inning, throwing fifty two mile pro hower lobs
down the plate and getting humbered to right field. That
is the epitome of the Minnesota Twins season. And I
don't even know what a pitoby means, but it sounds

(06:04):
like a word that sounds like what it means. It
sounds like a word that's appropriate for this situation. And
I saw a few people analyzing who the Twins got back,
and I listened to it, and it's not necessarily who
the Twins got back, because you did not know a

(06:25):
single player who is coming back for the Twins before yesterday.
None of these guys are household names and even never
heard of them. Before, So it's not really about that.
Maybe out of the players the Twins got back, there's
a few positional players, and maybe there's a good player
somewhere in that list of people, because there's just so

(06:48):
many of them. Maybe some of the pitchers the Twins
got back can become rotational pictures in the future. Maybe
some of the players the Twins got back can be
everyday players. Because there are just so many of them,
you would think that there would at least be a
few that can play down the road. Because prospects schmashbacks.

(07:13):
It's a league of so many prospects, and how many
of these prospects become players that really become unmovable And
you think about the prospects the Twins have had over
the years, and for years the Twins have touted the

(07:35):
prospects in their organization, going all the way back to
the Kyle Gibsons of the world starting pitcher who just
retired recently. I remember hearing so much noise about Kyle
Gibson and the great pitcher that he was eventually going

(07:55):
to become for the Twins. And he pitched a few games.
He was okay, He was nothing sensational. He did not
live up to the prospect name that he was supposed
to be after everyone touted him for so many years.
And there are so many players like that on every

(08:19):
Major League Baseball team within their farm system. The story
is mostly about the owner and the fans because they
sold almost every player to the highest bidder. And I

(08:42):
don't even necessarily think the decision was wrong to do that,
because at this point in time, it's a lost season.
It would have to be a miraculous run after the
All Star break for the to have any shot at

(09:03):
making the playoffs, And even if they did make the playoffs,
what would happen if they did? They would get smoked.
So it's a lost season. Sell your pieces at the
highest bidder and get some people back. I don't disagree
with that decision. But here is what got the Minnesota

(09:24):
Twins fans and writers so appalled. There have been video
circulating online twenty months ago the Minnesota Twins won their
first playoff series in over a decade, over two decades,

(09:50):
and there is a video of the Twins closing out
the Toronto Blue Jays and winning two zero and advancing
in the playoffs twenty months ago, and then the Twins
ownership group decided that taking a pay cut or taking

(10:10):
a drop in payroll was more important than trying to
win baseball games. And here's where the difference lies between
the ownership groups and the Twins fans. Owners view this
as a business. It's all about the money. It's all
about putting money in your pocket and increasing value. They

(10:35):
don't really give a rats ass about the fans. They
own the team, and when you own the team, you
can do whatever the hell you want. And they have
made it very clear that they are going to do
whatever the hell they want, whether it's dropping payroll, whether
it's signing Carlos Korea to a big deal when other

(10:57):
teams didn't want them, whether it's trading eleven players before
the trade deadline. When you're an owner, you have the
power to do whatever the hell you want. And when
you're an owner, you have fu money. So the cries
of the Minnesota Twins fans, sure the owners may have

(11:18):
hurt it and it has reached the owners, but they
have fu money. They don't give a damn. When you
have few money, can do whatever the hell you want.
And they have made it very clear that it's what
they're going to do, and if I was an owner,
I don't know if I would have been doing anything different.
If I was five hundred million dollars in debt and
I was the owner of the Twins, I would be

(11:40):
doing my absolute best to get out of debt and
make sure my payroll is as little as it can
be because I don't want to be in debt anymore
and I don't want my debt debt to increase, and
I'm trying to sell this team to get out of debt.
So I also view the side of the owners and
the decisions that they are making to look out for

(12:04):
their best interest, their best interest. As an owner, it said,
do whatever is in their best interest, and then I
see it from the fans side of thanks. Twenty months ago,
the Twins won a playoff series for the first time
in over twenty years, and it appeared that the Twins

(12:29):
were on a trajectory to be a force in the
Al Central for years to come. They even signed Carlos Korea.
They made trades for a good closer, and they had
a thirteen game win streak this year, and then management

(12:54):
trades everybody cuts payroll and creates an organization that has
absolutely no pride in itself. And that's really the story.
The Twins firestale, firesale before the trade deadline. The story

(13:15):
is the organization has no pride in itself. They do
not care about the product that they put on the
field at this point in their ownership group. Because we
just saw it. They traded away everybody, and I'm sure

(13:38):
they would have traded away Vibrant Buckston as well if
he didn't have a no trade clause. The biggest surprise
to me is that the Twins did not unload Joe
Ryan to the Boston Red Sox and take the highest bidder.
Maybe they see Joe Ryan as a future player that

(13:59):
will be on the Twins years to come. I don't
really know. They probably don't even know because they're gonna
sell the team and there's gonna be a new management
team and they're gonna do with Joe Ryan what they
want to do with Joe Ryan. But at the trade deadline,
at the All Star break, Byron Bucks it said I
want to be a Twin for life, and Joe Ryan
was like, I would be open to a trade. I
wouldn't be opposed to going to a contender and playing

(14:22):
meaningful baseball games, and the guy that wanted to be
traded and go play meaningful baseball games is a player
that got stuck pitching for the Twins. And another pitcher,
Chris Pettick, who got traded to the Detroit Tigers, has

(14:47):
been talking about how amazing their facilities are. So if
you're Joe Ryan and you see your fellow teammate get
traded to the Tigers talk about how great their facilities,
their kitchen, their organization, talk about all these things, you
can't help but feel envious. And then Chris Paddick goes
out and delivers his first start in the Tigers uniform.

(15:08):
Six innings, pitch three hits, one earned run, zero walks
five case as his best start of the season as
soon as he's traded away from the Twins. Six solid
innings pitched only one earned run in five strikeouts, zero walks,
three hits. It is something to get traded to a
contending team. It resets the batteries, It resets your motivation.

(15:33):
You want to win over your teammates. You want to
show your teammates that you were worth the trade, that
you are worth coming into their organization as once a
division rival and now you're on their team. So Chris
Paddick is motivated to showcase to his teammates that he
is able to be a quality starting pitcher in this

(15:55):
league despite playing for a Twins team that was going nowhere. Now,
the thing that most fascinates me about this trade is
what is going to happen next at target Field. One
of my favorite pictures to see online is empty baseball stadiums.

(16:29):
You have thousands of seats available to the mass whoever
wants a ticket. Twins tickets are going to go as
low as they've ever been at this point in time.
You can probably buy them for five bucks, maybe even
less than that. People are gonna sell their tickets for

(16:49):
nothing right now because who wants to watch the Twins.
Nobody is the answer. And what we are going to
see in the coming days is the beat porters taking
pictures of target Field, showcasing that nobody, nobody is in

(17:12):
attendance at these games. We're gonna be looking at a
few thousand fans at most that are gonna attend Twins
games because Twins fans have sent a very clear message
to ownership group this year that they are not going
to support a team that is not going to put

(17:36):
a winning product on the field, and so far this season,
out of thirty Major League Baseball teams, the Twins rank
twenty fifth and fan attendance, and their average home attendance

(18:00):
has been twenty two thousand fans, which is an inaccurate
number because they sell a ticket and then they count
those people as a fan attended even if that fan
doesn't attend. Plus, these numbers are severely fluctuated because of

(18:23):
Nelly and the sellout crowd that he produced. So prepare
yourselves to be completely astonished at a picture entering your
Twitter feeds for the rest of the season, because the

(18:47):
Twins fan base could not be any more bitter or
frustrated or angry with the Twins organization than it is
right now. I don't think the Twins ownership group could
deplete itself any further than it did yesterday after they

(19:14):
sent a message loud and clear, trade everybody sell the farm,
and we are having a sale to the highest bidder.
Prepare yourselves to see pictures that you have never seen
before because the Twins organization is burning every bridge and

(19:41):
the only hope moving forward is a new ownership group
that is willing to pay for players and willing to
trade for guys, and that is willing to put a
winning product on the field. It's hard to get any
worse than the poll lad so probably can't. But the

(20:04):
future hope for the Twins organization is very clear. The
new owner, whoever that is, whoever's gonna pay a few
billion dollars for the team, better be willing to pay
for players. And what they're going to say is, we're

(20:24):
gonna build a culture and we're gonna build this. We're
gonna do this, We're gonna do it our way, and
it's gonna get the Twins fans excited for a short while.
Until the new ownership group proves what they are going
to do, they have to back up their wording with action.

(20:46):
