Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Grind, a Minnesota sports podcast. This is the Grind.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Minnesota sports podcast because it's been a grind since nineteen
ninety one, since the Minnesota Twins won the World Series.
If you want to find out how I broke the
curse or will break the curse of this sports curse,
check out my podcast yesterday because I found the formula

(00:30):
that is going to break it, and I think we
got it. The title of that podcast is called JJ
McCarthy is Deceptive, his Deceptive Skill something along those lines.
But today I want to talk about Jordan ascid suspension
and Colin Coward's recent comments about the Minnesota Vikings protecting

(00:53):
JJ McCarthy. We're gonna dive into those things and I'm
gonna give you my take on filtered, on fraid and
ready to plunge into the minutes of the sports scene.
But first I need to tell you about Five Star
Bass Solutions of Minneapolis, because they transformed our bathroom in
forty eight hours, and I am doing you a favor
by telling you about them. An entire bathroom and you

(01:17):
don't need to redo your entire bathroom. You can just
do a shower, just a floor. Five Star Bath Solutions
of Minneapolis does it all. But they did our entire
bathroom in forty eight hours. New flooring, new bathtub, They
got rid of our mold in our shower, new surround,
new shower head. We went from a single to a
double sink, a new vanity, mirror, countertops, everything forty eight hours.

(01:41):
Don't wait eight weeks for your bathroom project to get
done when you can get it done in forty eight hours.
Don't squeeze into your teeny tiny bathroom in your basement
when you can call Five Star Bath Solutions of Minneapolis.
They'll give you the same price and the bathroom project
will get done in forty eight hours. That's a deal.
Affordable payment plans, free consultations. Contact five Star Bath Solutions

(02:07):
of Minneapolis for your bathroom project needs. All right, let's
begin with Jordan Addison's suspension, because this has been something
we've been expecting really for a year. And what's interesting
about this is that just yesterday I was wondering why

(02:33):
the NFL was taking so long to hand out their
suspension of Jordan, and to the point where I was
wondering if he wouldn't get suspended for the three game
amount that everybody was expecting, and then he gets suspended
for the three game amount that everybody was expecting hours later.

(02:54):
It's like one of those situations where you're waiting for
someone to arrive. You're waiting, you're waiting, You're waiting for
someone to pick you up for something, whatever the case
may be.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
They're late.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
What's taken them so long? I'll call in a little bit.
I won't call yet, just give them a little bit
more time. And then you call and then the answer
and they say, I'm ten seconds away. Chill out. That's
exactly what happened yesterday. I was like, what's the NFL
doing taking so long to hand out this suspension of
Jordan Andison? And then ten seconds later they handed out

(03:29):
the suspension of Jordan Andison. And the real question is
how is this going to impact the Minnesota Vikings moving forward?
Because who will fill in as wide receiver two? And

(03:50):
it's not a good thing, but it's not a terrible
thing either. The Minnesota Vikings have been prepared for this
moment for a year. This moment of Jordan Andison's wet
driving happened basically a year ago over a year ago,

(04:13):
and that allowed the Vikings to be prepared for whatever
punishment the NFL would hand out.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
And what's also.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
An okay thing about this is that from the Viking
side is that they kind of went through this last year.
Jordan Andison missed the first few games of the season
because of an ankle injury. He got hurt against the
Giants and then had to miss a few games. And
Jalen Naylor really stepped up in a big way as
wide receiver too. The dude had multiple touchdowns in the

(04:45):
first few games of the season. So it would be
a surprise to me if the Vikings looked elsewhere for
wide receiver help because they experience this last year. And
you look at the Viking's array of weapons and right

(05:09):
now most of them are injured. Justin Jefferson sitting out
nursing a hamstring injury. But we'll be back by week one.
The question is with TJ. Hoginson, will he be back
by week one, And it appears that he'll be on
a trajectory to be back, but that one is a
little bit more of an unknown. And although Addison is
wide receiver, two, TJ. Howkinson is basically a wide receiver,

(05:32):
So you throw in Justin Jefferson as wide receiver one,
Hockinson becomes wide receiver two, and Jalen Naylor still stays
at that wide receiver three, kind of a hybrid role
as a wide receiver two as well. So although the
Vikings are much better with Jordan Andison in the lineup

(05:53):
and as a threat, and it appears that McCarthy and
Addison have developed some chemistry through this training camp, the
Vikings will be able to replace Addison with the players
that they have already.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
On their roster.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Now, the biggest thing becomes health moving forward. If Justin
Jefferson injures his hamstring again in week one, or TJ.
Hogginson or Jalen Naylor, well then it becomes an issue.
But at the beginning of the season, the Minnesota Vikings

(06:39):
objective is going to be to run the ball and
get McCarthy comfortable. They are not going to rely on
mccararthy to throw the ball thirty plus times a game,
and if that happened, I would be surprised. The first
few weeks of the season, to get McCarthy acclimated and comfortable,
they are going to rely heavily on one A and

(07:02):
one B running backs Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason, which
will also take some of the load and some of
the pressure off of McCarthy and will also take the
burden of Jordan Anton not being on the field away,

(07:22):
so that's important to note as well. He suspended three
games and hopefully the Vikings can win the first few
games of the season because the schedule doesn't get tough
until midseason, so that's good from that perspective. I still

(07:43):
can't believe he made the decision that he did following
the death of Vikings corner Kyrie Jackson. One of the
dumbest DECI decisions that a wide receiver could make based

(08:03):
on the outcome that happened about a week beforehand, but
he made a mistake. The good news about the whole
situation is that.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
He didn't kill anybody and that he didn't get killed.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
So that's good that nobody was seriously injured because of
his terrible decision. All right, let me tell you about
Hockland Farms. Had a thought there that has thought about
talking about, but I didn't. Should I talk about it? No,

(08:45):
I'll talk about later. Let me tell you about Hopeland Farms.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Hoakland Farms has the best rotationally rats one hundred percent
of grass fed beef.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
We're getting back on track.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
You look at it grocery store for their beef prices,
it's like four dollars and thirty cents. Whoops, never mind,
it's like nine dollars for steaks per pound. Hopeland Farm
has four dollars and thirty cents a pound. They are
the best and it's not even close. One percent rotationally
grays grass fed. Don't worry about pesticides, don't worry.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
About where your beef comes from.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Contact Hopeland Farms Beef at nine five two four nine
one one five four one and tell Jared that you
heard about it from Tim, and then he'll give you
a little discount on your first order Hoakland Farms Beef
nine five two four one five four one.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
All right.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Colin Coward has been very much on the j J.
McCarthy train. He doesn't believe in him, calls him a
sea quarterback, and then he has this conversation with Diana
Russini about the vi Vikings propping JJ McCarthy up when

(10:05):
it's not reality. There's a lot of lifting up of
jajon McCarthy. And I'm getting all of this from the
Purple Persuasion, who's the best at finding Vikings content and
sharing it so it's all in one place. If you
don't follow the Purple Persuasion, you need to on Twitter.

(10:27):
So Colin Coward and Diane Russy talking about the Minnesota
Vikings lifting McCarthy up when it's not necessarily reality, and
of course that's going to send Minnesota Vikings fans into
into frustration, into anger because of course, how dare a

(10:49):
professional sports talk show host talk about our quarterback and
discuss him and say how bad he might be when
it's his job. And this is the nature of being
an interesting fan base. If you want the national talking

(11:10):
heads to talk about your team, will be prepared for
national talking hands to rip your team. If you don't
like to be covered, go back to being boring. But
right now, the Vikings are interesting and they demand a
segment on national sports talk show hosts.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Shows. And this is what we're seeing.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
We're seeing calling Coward talk about McCarthy because the Vikings
are interesting. If you won't want your team to be
talked about, your team better be interesting. And right now
the Vikings are so this idea that the Vikings are
propping up McCarthy and making him seem better than he

(11:57):
actually is.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
And I would say yes they are, because.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
That is the job of every PR team, not just
in sports, but in politics. The job of the PR
team is to elevate whoever is on your roster or
organization and make them look good and make them look

(12:26):
better than they appear. That is one on one of
politics and sports. Of course, the Minnesota Vikings are propping
up JJ McCarthy to look good. The Vikings want to
look good as an organization, and if they want to
look good as an organization to the outside world, their

(12:47):
job is to prop up JJ McCarthy and make him
look good, as is the job of every NFL organization.
The worst team in the league, Cleveland Browns, even they
are propping up their quarterbacks to look good, to look

(13:07):
better than they're actually going to look in the regular season.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
There's only a few teams.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
That really can't prop up their quarterbacks to look better
than they actually are because their quarterbacks are the best
of the best. The Chiefs, the Ravens, the Bills, the Bengals,
the Chargers. Teams that have great quarterbacks don't have to

(13:34):
worry about propping up their great quarterbacks because they already
have great quarterbacks. But teams that don't have great quarterbacks,
their job in training camp and throughout the entire season
is to make their team look good and to make
their quarterback appear good to the rest of the world,
because if they're not, then what's gonna happen. Is that

(13:55):
just gonna put fuel to the fire for conversations that
Colin Coward has. So he's not wrong that the Vikings
are propping up JJ McCarthy, But where he misses the
point is that every NFL organization does it, and it's
their job to prop up their quarterbacks, especially young quarterbacks.

(14:22):
You look at stories about Jaden Daniels and Caleb Williams
and Bo Nicks and Michael Pennix Junior and JJ McCarthy.
You look last year at those quarterbacks that are all
doing the same thing. Oh he's learning the playbook. Well, oh,
he's really grasping this offense his command in the huddle.

(14:45):
It is the NFL organization's job to prop up and
protect their players, especially rookie players that could and will
be attacked by national sports hosts who don't think they
are going to live up to the name of being
a first round pick.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
So let's be clear.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Colin Coward is not wrong about McCarthy and him being
popped up, But where he is missing the point is
that every NFL team does this, every political team, whether

(15:29):
it's left or right, or middle or independent or whatever
the case may be, every sports team in the NFL,
in the NBA, in college. It's their job. That's why
you have PR teams. The whole point of PR teams
is to make your organization look good. And that's what
the Vikings are doing because that's their job. And that's

(15:52):
what every NFL team is doing, because that's their job. Yes,
the Vikings are protecting JAJ McCarthy, but it's what they're
supposed to do, and so is every NFL organization, and
so is every political party.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
Do you think the Republican Party.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
Goes on to social media and says all the bad
things that Trump missed on or no? Do you think
the White House posts things that show Trump mishandling information
or same thing with Biden or Obama or whoever the
president is. No, their job is to prop up their guy,
and that's what the Vikings are doing. They're propping up

(16:34):
their guy. So yes, He's right, but it applies to
every organization in the NFL. Thanks for joining the show today.
