Speaker 1 (00:00):
You believe that God is one you do well. The
demons also believe and shudder James two nineteen. Gracious Father,
we thank you for the gift of faith and the
knowledge that you are the one true God. We confess
that sometimes our faith becomes mere belief without action. Forgive us, Lord,

(00:26):
for when we fail to live out the depth of
our faith. Renew our hearts to not only believe, but
to act in ways that reflect Your love in truth.
Strengthen us to live boldly, showing our faith through our deeds,
not just our words. Empower us to serve others and

(00:49):
bring glory to your name. Living a faith that transforms lives.
In Jesus name, we pray Amen. Thank you for praying
with me to day. You're listening to the Jesus Podcast.
Remain here for a dark story about Jesus and demons.
If you've cleaned anything from this podcast, we'd love it

(01:11):
if you left a review and shared it with a friend.
Michael had lived an unassuming life as a merchant for
most of his life. His stall in the marketplace was
filled with elegant tapestries and fine linen from around the world.
He never sought out fame or glory. He quite liked

(01:33):
hiding behind the curtains of his rugs and blankets which
hung for sale in his shop. In every way imaginable,
Michael was ordinary, and he was happy with that fact.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Good morning, Eli, I know your and Sarah's anniversaries coming up.
I'm sure she'd love one of these beautiful rugs straight
from Pergia. Or maybe she'd fancy a blanket, the finest
cotton from each.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Sholo.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Michael quite the salesman as always.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Ah, my sister loved the tapesri I got her last year.
Perhaps you're right.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
As Eli caressed the linens between his rough fingers, Michael
heard a whisper from over his shoulder. He turned round
but saw nothing. A trick of the mind, he thought
to himself. He turned back to Eli in hopes of
closing the sale. Eli jovially produced a few coins from
his purse and gladly handed them over to Michael. The

(02:37):
young man pulled down a delicate blanket made from a
rainbow of colors. Michael's life in the market was simple
but beautiful. He knew his neighbors and loved each one,
and in return, he enjoyed the closeness of their friendships.
There were few aspects of life Michael would change. He

(02:58):
was quite content with how things were, but the dark
forces of this world liked to catch the unsuspecting. By surprise,
Elie departed just as Michael heard another whisper, sures it.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
He is, who's there?

Speaker 1 (03:19):
No reply came. He heard a rustling behind a few
crates at the corner of his stall. Michael cautiously took
a few steps forward. He peered behind the boxes but
found nothing. Again, he heard a whisper from behind him.
He swirled around to catch another sight of the source,
but he was met by the regular bustling crowds working

(03:43):
down the street. Michael went to walk back behind his booth,
but upon taking a step, the rushing wind knocked him back.
His blood turned ice cold. From within his own mind,
Michael heard a whispering voice that was smooth and grating,

(04:03):
as though it was trying to appeal to Michael, despite
being an unwelcome guest.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Hello, boy, I'd apologize for the intrusion, but the way
I see it, I'm doing you a favor. A favor.
How who are you?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Michael's brain reeled with questions, though he was entirely in
control of his body, his senses were becoming dull, like
his mind was getting lost in a dense fog.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Your life has been nothing more than a blank kindness.
You've spent years earning the affection of the community. Now
seems as good a time as any to use it
for a greater lovers.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Michael tried the former response, but realiz he could no
longer control his vocal cords to respond. The best he
could do was muster up words as a thought, though
he was unsure whether or not his malevolent companion could hear.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
I'm losing control.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
In an instant, Michael's peaceful life slipped through his fingers
as a demon took residence within him. His days of
selling goods in the town square were replaced with meandering
down alleyways, striking fear into those who happened upon the
possessed man. Quiet evenings in his home had turned to

(05:39):
late nights howling in the streets like a banjee. Over
a few days, the demon had fine tuned his efforts
to torment the community. He had wandered near the synagogue,
where he lingered about like an unholy ghost, haunting those
who had come to worship, but he only seen to

(06:00):
be biding his time, knowing that there was one in
the city who could stop him. With no one to
pray to, the demon could only hope to be spared
from being removed.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
From his new home.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
He thought of his options before coming to what was
less than a foregone conclusion. If he could stop the
son of Man before he could stop him.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
Maybe, just maybe he stood a chance. Many live in
fear of the demonic forces in Satan's traps. However, scripture
reveals to us that there is power in the name
of Jesus. Welcome to the Jesus Podcast, a year of
stories showcasing the depth of Christ's love and glory of

(06:46):
his truth. Today, we're continuing our miniseries through Jesus's interactions
with demons. It's spooky season, which means many people will
be celebrating demons and the forces of darkness. But we
know better than to play with such things. Let's dive
into a story about Jesus's authority over demons. Today, we're

(07:07):
journeying into a story inspired by Mark chapter one, verses
twenty one through thirty four, a passage that crackles with
the electricity of divine authority breaking into everyday life. Imagine
attending your regular synagogue service, expecting the usual readings and teachings,
when suddenly everything changes. You hear wicked laughter bouncing off

(07:30):
the walls, and a terrible darkness looming over you.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
On the Sabbath, Jesus entered into the nearby synagogue to
teach Jews rested from their work and gathered together to
hear the word of God. They walk through the synagogue
doors of the sacred building and lined the walls. Walls
that had been witnessed to countless teachings throughout generations, but
none compared to the teachings of the Rabbi of Nazareth.

(08:00):
The entire congregation was enthralled with jesus words. In their
desire to hear every word, they resisted the urge to
lift approving shouts in support of the teacher. The other
scribes they were used to hearing had simply recycled one
another's writings with little thought beyond tradition and orthodoxy. They

(08:21):
were content with maintaining the status quo. But Jesus he
wanted more. He spoke with a new type of authority
the people had never heard before from Jesus's mouth flowed
the very words of God, living water for part souls.
But more than that, Jesus not only spoke the word

(08:44):
of God, he was the very word of God, who
was with him in the beginning. The eternal truth he
shared cut through the rough exterior of religious dogma and
right to the heart of his listeners. Jesus spoke the
poetic truths intrinsically woven into the scriptures, and a light

(09:07):
hearted spirit of joy filled the room. Unbeknownst to the worshippers,
Michael quietly sneaked in through the doorway, like a shadow
pressed against the wall, but Jesus was fully aware of
him and watched as the figure crouched at the doorway.

(09:28):
The demon averted his gaze from Jesus and allowed his
eyes to peruse the congregation. To him, the innocent people
who had come to listen to Jesus were nothing more
than distracted prey. The wicked creature lurched around the room,
settling into the darkest spot he could find. He eyed

(09:52):
Jesus from the edges of his vision, still refusing to
meet his gaze. He listened closely, not to the teachings
of Jesus, But to the small cues of the crowd,
he waited until they were at their most captivated before
jumping in from the corner of the synagogue. A deep

(10:15):
laughter emerged from the possessed man. The rumbling laughter turned
into a wet cackle. As the man beat his fist
against the wall. The dust trickled down from the crevices
of the ceiling, filling the room with a light haze.
The crowd stirred from their trance and fixated their eyes
on Michael. Their curiosity had been enough to distract them

(10:39):
from the beauty of Jesus. The danger if allowed to continue.
The man's fist beat harder against the stone wall, like
a cold, hardened heartbeat. Jesus knew exactly what was happening.
From the outside. The man looked as ordinary as any
one else in the room, but hiding under the surface

(11:01):
was a malevolent force reeking havoc on a poor human soul.
Michael let out a raspy cackle. His laughter was painful
and forced. He coughed before living on an ear splitting scream.
He dug his ragged nails into his chest, as though
trying to hold his heart in place. Poor Michael did

(11:25):
all he could to fight against the demon's snare. The
man's neck snapped back to look at Jesus. Anger laced
the surface of his eyes, and there was deep pain
behind them, not merely physical pain, but the mental agony
he had felt as he lost control over his senses.

(11:47):
The demon pointed forward to Jesus.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
What have we got to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
The demon lurked forward, swinging the man's body against the wall.
Blood dripped down his temple. The demon spat. It was
a haunting reminder of the perverse intermingling of humanity and
the demonic.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Have you come to destroy us?

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Have you? The demon was getting louder and angrier. The
people that were frightened, but Jesus stood perfectly still as
the demon approached him.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
These people may not know who you are, but I do.
I know who you are.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
Jesus' eyes became narrow he anticipated the demon's next move.
The demon paused to look around the room. He masked
in the people's fear. Then he pointed at Jesus again,
you're the Holy one?

Speaker 3 (12:48):
The Son be silent.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Jesus muzzled the demon from uttering words that weren't his
to share. His voice reverberated off the walls like the
crack of a whim. The demon cowered back, doing what
little he could to hide his dread. Knowing who Jesus
was had come with the satisfaction of trying to thwart
the Messiah's plans, but now it was a dreadful reminder

(13:16):
that he was in the presence of the one who
could destroy both body and soul, flesh and spirit. Jesus
stepped down from the platform and walked towards the demon.
With every step Jesus took forward, the demon took a
step back.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Watch your tongue, your leech of satan.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Now the demon didn't dare take his eyes off Jesus,
or maybe he couldn't. He stumbled over his feet and
fell on his back. He pressed firmly against the earth
below and continued dragging himself away from Jesus, trying to
scurry away like a trapped rat. But before he was

(13:58):
able to make his escape, the words of Jesus pierced
the darkness that consumed the man.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
Come out of him. Now.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
These words were the first words Michael could remember hearing
since being taken over by the demon. Jesus command broke
through with the chains that had been bound around his
tormented soul. Michael's body flailed back and hit the stone floor.
A harsh scream echoed through the entire synagogue. The demon

(14:28):
jolted forward, then flung Michael's body against the wall again.
Then he slowly slid to the ground, whimpering in pain.
For a moment, he lay stiff and motionless in the dirt.
The demon was gone. It would torment him no more.

(14:48):
Jesus bent down and embraced the man he had john
attend to him. Up until then, people saw Jesus as
a great teacher. They were beginning to realize he was
much more. Jesus enters the synagogue and compernium and begins

(15:08):
to teach. Now, synagogues in those days didn't have a
scheduled preacher. They practiced the freedom of the synagogue, inviting
learned guests to speak. So when Jesus stands up, the
congregation might have thought, well, another traveling teacher, let's see
what he has to say. But as he speaks, the
atmosphere shifts. He teaches.

Speaker 4 (15:31):
Not like the scribes who often quoted other rabbis and
hedged their statements with endless footnotes. No, Jesus speaks with
authority as if he's the author of the text himself,
and guess what he is. The people are astonished. They're
not just impressed, they're shaken to their core. This isn't

(15:51):
just head knowledge, it's heart and soul truth. Jesus believes
what he says, and it resonates deeply that true authority
comes not from titles or positions, but from authenticity and conviction.
Just then, a man with an unclean spirit interrupts. He
cries out, what have we to do with you, Jesus

(16:13):
of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know
who you are, the Holy One of God. Isn't it
fascinating that while the regular attendees are just beginning to
grasp who Jesus might be, the unclean spirit recognizes him immediately.
Even the forces of darkness can't ignore his authority. But
Jesus doesn't panic or call for security. He rebukes the spirit, saying,

(16:36):
be quiet and come out of him. With that, the
man convulses, the spirit departs, and the congregation is left
in stun silence. This moment forces us to acknowledge that
there's more to reality than what we can see. We
might not talk much about unclean spirits to day, but
we all face unseen struggles, be it anxiety, addiction, or

(17:00):
personal battles. Jesus demonstrates that his authority extends beyond the
physical realm into the mental, emotional, and spiritual. Today's passage
offers a few key lessons for us. First, we must
embrace true authority. Jesus teaches with authority because he embodies

(17:20):
the truth in a world filled with conflicting voices. In
a world filled with conflicting voices, let's anchor ourselves in
his word, which stands unshaken. Second, we must expect the unexpected.
When Jesus shows up, he disrupts the ordinary. Are we
open to his interruptions in our lives? Sometimes our routines

(17:43):
need a divine shake up. Next, we must recognize the
spiritual battle around us. While we might not encounter unclean
spirits as described here, we face challenges that require spiritual solutions.
Let's not ignore the unseen. Instead, let's confront it with
prayer and faith. Lastly, let's respond to Jesus's authority. The

(18:07):
congregation had a choice to dismiss what they saw, or
to let it transform them. We face the same choice,
will we let Jesus's authority change us? By the end
of that day, Jesus's fame had spread throughout Galilee, not
because he sought popularity, but because lives were transformed. He
healed the sick, brought hope to the hopeless, and demonstrated

(18:30):
that his authority is both compassionate and powerful. So as
we reflect on this passage, let's consider how is Jesus'
authority evident in our lives. Are we merely astonished by
his teachings, or are we allowing them to transform us?
May we be of people who not only hear his

(18:51):
word but respond to it, embracing the fullness of his
authority in every area of our lives. Embracing the wellness
of his authority in every area of our lives.
