Friday (pt 2 of 2): Today’s Late Riser’s Podcast is all about the crazy stuff that went down during the first week of the Nationwide Lockdown during the Covid Pandemic. You know, all those empty roads and shuttered businesses? Well, guess what? The whole Big Show Cast was granted official “Essential Workers Status” by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Can you believe it? The Federal Government thinks we’re essential! - So, our studio was treated like a clinical lab! - It got disinfected twice a day, once before we could even step inside and again after we left. - It was a real wake-up call about how serious and scary this whole thing was, not just for us, but for the whole country.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
What what are you saying?

Speaker 6 (27:16):
My wish is to spend thirty minutes making mad passionate
love to your wife.

Speaker 1 (27:23):
I thought it was gonna be worse than that. What
that is totally out of the question. Now wait a minute,
come here, poop pee. We we did agree to his turn.
Are you crazy?

Speaker 15 (27:38):
No?

Speaker 1 (27:38):
Why should start thinking about that scratch golfer thing? Hey
turn me loose on a course with a million bucks?
I doubled it in a week. Are you in in
or out?

Speaker 2 (27:48):
Well?

Speaker 12 (27:48):
Okay, let's get this over with, honey. Would you mind
waiting outside in the car?

Speaker 1 (27:52):
You want me to wait outside? Okay?

Speaker 7 (27:54):
Missus Peterson and the genie disappear into the master bedroom.
They emerge third minutes later.

Speaker 6 (28:02):
You know, Ms Petersen, you're a real qualifier and your
husband's a nice guy too.

Speaker 1 (28:07):
Say how old is he? Anyway?

Speaker 12 (28:09):
He's thirty eight?

Speaker 1 (28:10):
Thirty eight?

Speaker 6 (28:11):
Ain't he a little old to believe in this genie stud.

Speaker 9 (28:21):
We hope you've enjoyed Johnawenville Playhouse.

Speaker 7 (28:25):
Shut it again next time when we'll hear mister Peterson say, hey.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
Does this mean we don't get to meet? And good morning?

Speaker 2 (29:02):
This make show on the radio for you Friday, March
of twenty seven and on the phone. II man Tom
Sorenson this morning. I'm good morning buddy.

Speaker 4 (29:14):
Good morning man. I never should touch my phone. That's
why I wasn't ringing properly.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Our last government'smen calling Tom is that?

Speaker 2 (29:25):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (29:25):
It wasn't asked her.

Speaker 2 (29:26):
Jackie finally got in touch with you want and said,
tell stupid to turn his phone on.

Speaker 1 (29:31):
I think that might have been Jackie's worst would call you.

Speaker 4 (29:35):
No, that was talking about Randy.

Speaker 1 (29:42):
All right, Tom, Well.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
As we know, slow time into sports world. What in
the world have you been looking at, buddy?

Speaker 4 (29:49):
You know, on Tuesday, the Panthers officially cut Cam Newton.
Let me think about it. I mean, this guy was
the MVP in twenty fifteen, played in the The Bowl
in twenty sixteen, and suddenly he's unwanted. You know, he
acted what they're doing. I mean, they're trying to get younger,
they're trying to free up money, and they'll say nineteen

(30:11):
million under the cellar cap with a cut of Newton.
But you know, he was the face of this franchise.
He was the guy who was yelling and dancing and
celebrating and drove some people nuts and other people just
loved him and it's it's really weird to see the
team without him under quarterback.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
That's very true, Tom, we'll talk about that's the Carolina
Panthers and the like. He went over the stats that
he had one of the one of the best NFL MVP.
So when they were shopping him around trying to get
a trade and nobody was biting, So what do you
put for that? Because of his recent injuries, they just

(30:49):
don't know if he's one hundred percent.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
They don't.

Speaker 4 (30:52):
The Panthers talked to Chicago, who signed Nick Foles, and
they tucked to Los Angeles with Chargers. But the problem
is people can't bring him in, you know. I mean
teams want to think, all right, we're going to pay
this guy twenty million dollars a year. Bay We want
to know that he's healthy and Camp had a physical
in Atlanta and everything worked out, but does that mean

(31:17):
he's in football shape? And teams want to know before
they invest that kind of money. So my guess is
it's going to be while. And the problem is a
lot of the starting jobs are being claimed. But he
has enough talent. He's got to be able to move
to be effective. And if he can move again, and
if his shoulder is good, some team could really get

(31:39):
a bargain.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
And the thing about it so just just cut him
with nothing there, but the thing about keeping him on
you have to pay him the twenty million then, as
we talked about last week's on Teddy Bridgewater from New
Orleans and paying him that much, and so I don't
guess that's the only thing that they could do.

Speaker 1 (32:01):
It's just got him loose.

Speaker 4 (32:03):
And what's interesting is they got a fifth thrown draft
pick for Kyle Allen filled in not necessarily successful, it
was a good for a while for Cam last season,
and you know, they get a fifth round pick from
Ron Rivera in the Washington Redskins for him. But Cam,
they're just letting him dangle, letting them go. And it's, uh,
you know, you look at this roster and you get

(32:25):
to know a lot of these players. I mean you
know them. I know them from practice and locker rooms
and stuff like that. But even if you don't have access,
even if you're watching them on TV, you feel like
you know these guys and then wham they gone.

Speaker 1 (32:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (32:38):
Jackie is taking it hardest of anybody here. And uh,
it's not just his fashion sense. That's what I'll miss.
I know we're talking about our NFL team, the Panthers,
and I know we got listeners all over to the
network with their favorite teams as well, But just want
to deal with this.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
What quarterbacks?

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Teddy Bridgewater now, and we still got Will Greer from
West Virginia on the roster.

Speaker 4 (33:06):
Yeah, and they signed Walker who was gonna be Walker
the quarterback, that's it. And he was going to be
the best. He had been the best player in the XFL,
and so they signed him and that's why they were
able to trade Kyle Allen. But you know, you don't
know if it's gonna work. I mean, this guy's bounced
wrong practice squad and stuff, but he's young and liked

(33:29):
almost everybody else who played for Rule in college. I mean,
you look at the roster. I think they've signed like
eleven receivers and they all went to Temple when Will
coach there, So it's, uh, he almost was Rule. It
coaches like a big time school first. But it's it's interesting.
We all like new Uh. Change is sad as Jack,

(33:51):
You'll tell you that about Cam, but it's also you know,
they signed a game Robbie Anderson and played receiver at
Temple and he can fly. I mean he is going
to be really good and that you see things like
that and he kind of it kind of gives you
a little more faith in what they're doing, you know.

Speaker 1 (34:07):
And and that's the way it is in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
People who know people, you know, whether it's as a
teams where the coaches as coach. Before we saw our
buddy Ron rivera hex coach of the Panthers and Redskins,
you know, signing some some guys that he had coached
on and uh, not just NFL, but you know, in
in all businesses, I guess in.

Speaker 7 (34:29):
Life and life you just bring the people you know
in with you. That guy will make my job easier.
And he's not an idiot, that's who.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
You know, what you getting, you know what you're getting.

Speaker 4 (34:38):
Exactly, especially now without the opportunity to go into the
facilities which are closed and and you look around the league,
and we talked about it, but Tom Brady and Tampa,
Todd Gurley, some North Carolina great, great running back, uh
and suddenly he's caught by his team and the Atlanta
FL can sign him. So it's there's it's been a

(35:00):
wholesale movement, and there's still a lot of players out.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
There with you know, I think as long as they
don't do anything with Christian McCaffrey, I think the Panther
I bet that would make some Panther fans mad. Have
you heard anything about that? Surely they're going to keep Christian.

Speaker 15 (35:18):
Now.

Speaker 4 (35:19):
But there is there is one school of thought that says, look,
if you're going to rebuild, don't fool around. I mean,
McCaffrey put so many miles on him last season. He
caught so many balls, he more than any run back
in the league. The percentage of the time that he
was in there what even close. And the cares he got,
the touches he got also let the league. And he's

(35:42):
not a big guy and he took a tremendous pound.
I mean, he's a great player, and you know it.
In some ways, if you're going to rebuild, it makes
sense to say, all right, look at all we can
get for him. But if you do that, you really
cut the heart out of this team. Because you say, Cam,
you can make it's understandable what they did because you

(36:03):
don't know what he is left McCaffrey, you know, so yeah,
I think there would be torches and pitchforks if they
cut McCaffrey.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
No, man, that's got to be it, all right, buddy,
Well just keep my own is that's the only thing
happening now? How long can the NFL do the trades
and pick up people this free agent period.

Speaker 1 (36:25):
And all that tom.

Speaker 4 (36:27):
Typically they have a date where it ends, but because
of the delayed start, every schedule and every sport has
been amended. So we don't know. They don't know. I mean,
it just depends on when people return to business as
usual and you know, who knows when that will be?

Speaker 2 (36:46):
All right, Well, the only sporting event that we have
live quote the sporting event is NASCAR. Are only video
game that's going to be on FS one this weekend.
Have you have you had a chance that check that out?

Speaker 1 (37:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (37:00):
Dumb Yeah. I thought they did a great job because
they had they had Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon as
the announcers had.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (37:14):
The anthem was sung in front of one of the garages,
and it was a good race. I mean, you could
tell Jimmy Johnson did not know anything about video games
because he was just getting crushed and he probably took
out half the field. But it comes down to the
final lap and Erhart's leaving leading and Hamlin is trying
to get around and bumps him and beats them. If

(37:35):
that happened in real life, man, there's pitchforks and firing.
People's marching on Denny Hamlin's house. But it was a
good race, And I tell you, I give NASCAR credit
because so many drivers got involved. And Hammlon was funny
because while he was doing it, his daughter bought him
a coke or soft drink of some type and it
was all shook copping and went squirting all over his machine.

(37:58):
But uh, you won anyway. But you know what, I
do give NASCAR critic because people are out there just
begging for something. They want to see something, and the
graphics are really good, and you know what, you know
what would be cool? I think the first one was
at Miami Homestead. The next one. Have it like that
North Wilkesboro. Wouldn't it be cool?

Speaker 2 (38:19):
Yeah, that's that's a great idea, as they Yeah. Doug
Rice this week said that now Fox has got more
time to post some more bells and whistles on it,
so it might be even better.

Speaker 1 (38:29):
Could we see that in other sports.

Speaker 7 (38:31):
If this thing goes out for long term time.

Speaker 4 (38:33):
You think the NBA is starting to do it, and
some teams are more tune than others. But like Phoenix
is ahead of everybody in this and they're playing their
schedule and they're they're inviting fans to get involved, and
it's it's pretty cool what they're doing. I hadn't caught
on the league wide yet, but I think the longer
this goes, the more likely you are to see it.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
All right, ma'am, look you buy out all right. Time
we missing anybody missed your own word. Worry, but we'll
get you back in here when everything's uh, calm down.
