fatable that Walmart, Amazon and other fine retailers. Robert Earl
Keane is joining us. As we promised earlier this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
R E.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
K got a big, big deal coming up. Man.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Of course we've been keeping up with our listener. First,
let me say, let me be quiet, always get excited
when I have called Robert, I shut up.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Good morning. How are you buddy?

Speaker 4 (00:47):
I'm doing really well.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
How are you well?

Speaker 1 (00:49):
I'm very good man, very good, nor Robert, I just
want to jump jump right in here. The last time
we talked was before July fourth, was talking about your
your a big concert you're gonna have and then while
all all hell broke loose with the devastating floods, right there.
And when we saw this, I'll call Jackie and Marshall said,

(01:11):
please get Robert those people. Make sure they're all right.
Because it happened so quick, we didn't have any idea.
Could could you just let us know what it was
like and and what was happening with you guys that day?

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Well, you know, you know, I mean, you know, the
state of Carolina is no stranger to that kind of devastation,
and uh, it was, uh, it was uh, you know, surprising.
At first. We were set up to play on the
river on the fourth of July, as you said, and
got there that morning and the stage had already been

(01:46):
washed away, all the vending tents had been washed away,
all the production stuff had been washed away, so we
knew the show was gone. But you know, there were
also like you know, float floating roofs of houses going
down the river. And but as the day went on,
all the tragedy that happened upstream from Kerrville in Hunt,

(02:08):
Texas especially, and those camps and stuff that were devastated
just took took our breathway really and we immediately the
best we could do is, you know, I keep reverberating
in my mind is is what you want to do
is do them do the best for the most people

(02:30):
for the longest that you can. And so we started,
you know, doing stuff with our merch where we gave
one hundred percent of our merch money to the relief effort,
and then we created this concert that's going to happen
on the twenty eighth of August with so many, so
many artists I can't even name them all, but Tyler Childers,

(02:53):
Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram, John Randall, Terry Allen, Ray, Wiley Hubbard,
and it goes on on. There's about forty different artists
that are going to be playing over at Whitewater Amphitheater
on that day, starting about two o'clock in the afternoon.
And it's all been being the exclusive sponsorship is as

(03:16):
my friend Beaver Applin with BUCkies, who owns BUCkies and
so so he came in with a million dollars right
off the bat to put that together. So so we've
and there's a lot of other people that have that
have added to that. But we are doing as much
as we can for as many people as we can,

(03:36):
for as long as we.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Can, and iber want to detail everybody the benefits sold
out in under five minutes. So yeah, that has sold out.
But like you said, there are four free streaming options
available vats right right, Amazon Music, YouTube on your YouTube channel,
and direct TV. I want to say, of course, all

(03:58):
money raised will go to the Commune Unity Foundation of
the Texas Hill Country. And and we're talking about when
we first put this out, when we heard from you,
Robert about applause for the cause, UH teamed with you.
If you could tell us a little bit about that.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Well, well, applause for the causes the moniker that we're
going under as far as like you know, musicians coming
together and uh and putting it put together. So we're
we are you know, it's it's it's it's titled John
Boys title. That's Robert, Robert O'Keene and friends, applause for
the cast.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Okay, all right, so y'all just so that's the title
of this deal. All right, We're good. Well I've been
saying it. I just didn't know what I was saying.

Speaker 5 (04:38):
Well, you can get to this from his website, Robert
earlkeane dot com. And they've done a great job of
showing you who all's going to be there and.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
It, Like he said, it's a lot, right, and and
this this is what I saw too, Robert. The platform,
the donor management platform, better Unite is ensuring all all
donations received from in person fans and at home viewers
funneled directly to the community Foundation. And that's always very

(05:08):
important when you have situations like this.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
Well, yeah, we were you know, a lot of this
is a lot of hard work, but a lot of
it was a lot of luck. And like the Community
Foundation UH and the Better United UH donated. The Community
Foundation is a foundation, but the community the Better United
is a is a A is a company for pay

(05:32):
and they donated all of their time and all of
their efforts to uh make sure that all this money
is is very clean and very easily inspected by anyone
who wanted to inspect it. And and it goes immediately
to the Community Foundation for the Texas Hill Country.

Speaker 6 (05:50):
And that's reassuring to folks who want to donate that,
you know, if there's a click on something and give
their money to help, they want to make sure that
it goes to the folks.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yes, yes, And I think we've all been stung by
that in one way or another. So we wanted to
make sure everybody felt very very confident about uh, the
you know, the way they donate. And also you were
talking about the different streaming platforms. There will be a
QR code on all those so people can just click

(06:19):
on that and donate date on their own without having
to talk to anybody or anything. So that's that's, you know,
that's what we wanted to do. We wanted to accommodate
people as much as possible, including you know, the artists,
but but primarily all the people that were coming to
the show. And we're not only like putting on a show,

(06:40):
We're putting on a really great show. And uh, it's
going to be I don't know, I'm excited about it.
I'm really excited about it because we were lucky enough
to start early and have some good luck, you know.

Speaker 6 (06:53):
And a shout out to the streamers, to the streaming
companies because they also they too, are you know, allowing
us to be folks to be able to stream.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, and uh and uh the merch that
you can buy is they're they're not taking any kind
of cut or anything. Every all of that is going.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
All right, so all of us will be able to
do something there to h to participate.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
Well, wow, Robert earl Ken, you've made something of yourself.

Speaker 6 (07:22):
And just to explain to you that the QR code,
you know how that that'll pop up on the screen
like you're watching it. You can just use your phone
and it'll take you right over to donate.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
There you go, now, Robert, I know you've been working
on a new album and in life, you know, happens
and changes things. Uh still going to be released maybe
later this year or next year.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
It'll be early next year, John Boy. Uh, we've been
working with Matt ross Spang from Memphis who's done a
lot of work with uh super producer Dave Cobb, but
on his own he's you know, he's done Jason isbel
and and and just I don't know, it's on and on.
It's hard to even kind of them on. But he's

(08:04):
a he's a really great producer. And uh we just
we we did a part of it in Memphis back
in May, and then last week he came down to Austin,
Texas and brought a couple of his guys and uh
we we work with them uh in Austin. So we're

(08:24):
gonna we're gonna do a little bit more, probably in
the fall, but uh, this was this was going to
be you know, who knows it might be my swan song,
but it's gonna be a hell of a swan song.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yeah, And I know you've got new episodes and updates.
How's your podcast? Was just called Americana Podcast.

Speaker 4 (08:45):

episode is with Aaron Felker. Evan Felker. I'm sorry, Evan
Felker of the Turnpot Tuba Doors, who are extremely popular
and people really love them, and and uh, this one,
I have to say, I really loved this. I didn't
know Evan that well at Cross Paths with him before,

(09:07):
but I mean, just the sweetest guy and great ideas
about songs and his upbringing in southeastern Oklahoma and being
a rancher son and and you know all all the
stuff that he does for the area around there. Because
they've become they did we did a show with them
in Red Rocks in May, and they did they did

(09:29):
two nights in a row, sold out, and we got
to open up for him there. So, uh, they're they're
just killing it, as they say in the Biz.

In nineteen fifty, only seven percent of American women did

(11:47):
something that seventy five percent of them do today.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
What is it?

Speaker 7 (11:53):
And only name one?

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Huh?

Speaker 7 (11:56):
Well, if you paid attention to Rayford, you know the answer.
It's work outside the home.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
Oh, nineteen fifty and now seventy five percent today works
outside the home.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Rod, agree or disagree?

Speaker 8 (12:14):
I would have to agree.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Dye their hair, dye their hairs. It would be interesting
to know what the percentage is working out? Its higher
in seventy five, y'all don't have lower.

Speaker 5 (12:32):
I can't believe anything that comes out of the Bureau
of Labor Statistics.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
So well, well that's a buzzer. Let's say when you
get a bail here, oh man Tider.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
According to studies, the average adult will do something an
average of four times a night.

Speaker 9 (12:50):
What is it who wants to be averaged?

Speaker 7 (12:56):
But four times a night the average person will.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Wake up, well, wake up four times a night. Right,
agree or disagree? That's a tough one, but.

Speaker 9 (13:10):
I'm going to have to agree.

Thank you, Joe boy, Thanks everyone playing with us. Man.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
I had fun.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
All right, jumping down, catching you up on your news.
On the other side, I remember in Rayford for a
Monday morning and Innurvel Team Wheeler Georgia team Good morning,

(14:31):
Big Job's on the radio. Another chance to join the
winners is coming up. But right now, remember when Detroit
tried to out knew the world by making tail fins
on cars bigger and bigger? What ended that race? Rayford
knows and tail?

Speaker 10 (14:47):
For Americans, cars have always been much more than a
way to get around. Since the rise of middle class
prosperity after World War Two, cars have been an extraordinarily
reliable window into the the country's culture and mood. Tao
fins of the nineteen fifties powerful totems of America's peacetime bounty. Ironically,

(15:08):
they were inspired by a war machine, the Lockheed P
thirty eight Lightning Fighter. His twin tails each supported a
vertical fin. Well General Motors design chief Harley Earl saw
the Fighter and decided to put fins on Cadillacs the
nineteen forty eight. They were modest, but mister Earl had
set the stage for Detroit's Great tail finn war. But

(15:31):
the Chrysler design chief adorned his nineteen fifty five models
with still taller Tao fins. Chrysler's market share rebounded, and
its earnings for the first two months of the year
exceeded its profits for all of nineteen fifty four, so
mister Exner put progressively taller fins on its nineteen fifty
six and nineteen fifty seven models. The nineteen fifty nine

(15:52):
Cadillacs had the tallest Tao fins ever appended to a
vehicle that didn't fly. Finns got smaller in the sta
exceeding years and disappeared entirely by nineteen sixty five. I
remember what led to the demise of the big tail
Finn competition. The Soviets had sent up Sputnick, a little
basketball sized object into space, and we were embarrassed. Someone

(16:16):
ashamed of our bigger and bigger tail fins as our
best engineering accomplishment property Rayfert passing that along for those
who remember it. For those who don't, hear on the
John Boy and Billy Show.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
Good Monday morning, big shows on the radio. Well, our
oldest fan and longtime visitor is out and about today.
He ain't letting us summer. He'd keep them away from
his moving around. So let's welcome back Nerve, old Tea Wheeler,
Come on in Nerve, Lord of Miny.

Speaker 11 (17:07):
I was gonna ask you how low the ac goes
in here, but I'm pretty dang sure it's set on.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
Polar Yeah, well, you know it's in summer. I like
a cold studio. Hell, I guess you do.

Speaker 11 (17:18):
You can make a few extra dollars renting out this space.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
To hang meat. Can we get you a jacket or something?

Speaker 11 (17:25):
You got a Parker's laying around. Hell, even Randy got
the high beams on the tea.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
It's better than the heat anyway.

Speaker 11 (17:32):
Yeah, yeah, I suppose you're right about that. You know
I've been through one hundred and six summers. Heat never
did bother me much, and tell us you ain't really, Yeah,
I prove it. You know how I always wear my
shirts button up to the top. Look at here?

Speaker 3 (17:45):
Yeah, you undid them top to button.

Speaker 11 (17:47):
Well, I figured if it's good enough for Tainer, it's
good enough for me. Try and control yourselves, ladies, I
ain't fishing for a date.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
A lot of it is the humidity.

Speaker 11 (17:57):
Oh, you're right about that.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
Humidity.

Speaker 11 (17:59):
Dang near kill me last week?

Speaker 3 (18:00):
Well, what happened?

Speaker 11 (18:02):
I jumped up on the out half seat and dang
near hydroplaned into the big hole.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
You always hear the weather guy's talking about relative humidity.

Speaker 11 (18:09):
Yeah, I don't understand what that is. Relative humidity to
me is when your cousin is so sweaty she keeps
sliding that from under you.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
A lot of folks used corn stars. Have you ever
tried that? Yes, sir, I did.

Speaker 11 (18:22):
I did. All I ever got was gravy. All I
needed was a yeast infection. The hell I could have
made biscuits breakfast, sir. I guess, I guess we should
consider ourselves lucky around here. You know, you go further
south and it just gets worse. As in Florida a
few year ago. The only time I ever saw a

(18:43):
funeral procession go through the Dairy Queen drive through, saw
a homeless fella holding a sign that said we'll work
for shade. So Dad, come hot. That Jehovah's witnesses started
sending email so blasted hot. When I hear someone break wind,
I jump behind him just for the breath. Well, I'd
never been that desperate. Why the hell would you be

(19:03):
working at I stationed zebra here? Well, I'm on ski
down light. I don't get a refill on that coffee.
Just get me back to square.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Will you help yourself?

Speaker 11 (19:12):
Well, I'm on a mosy. Keep your saddle all in,
your gun greased, and holler if and you need me.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Good morning, You got the big show on the radio.

Speaker 8 (19:21):
More chance for you to win coming up after your news,
weather and sports Mama.

Speaker 12 (19:27):
All I wanted to do was have a let us
sandwich on gluten bread, a tall glass of buttermilk, and
crawl under a bearskin rug. Why do I have to
listen to that John Boy person and Billy whoever on
that Noisy Big Show Button, Mama, Good.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Oh please call me Chris.

Speaker 7 (23:12):

d and Dub the three Noo.

Speaker 9 (39:29):
Well, Dub, I've been Flossy's doctor for years now, ever
since I came over from the Old Country. You know
I'm not American. Now I have to say she does
not appear to have zee Alzheimer's. See I told you.
You know, many people your age getty, little, for feitful, forgetful, pezza,

(39:50):
forgetful time to time. Can you understand I have an accent. Oh,
that's what it is. It's just a normal part of
getting older, Dob.

Speaker 19 (40:02):
Well, I ain't worried about her forgetting her grandbaby. It's
just little day of the day things. I'm scared that
she might forget to turn the stove off one day
and set the house on fire.

Speaker 9 (40:11):
Well, I see what you mean. Let me make a suggestion.
A lot of older people keep track of things by
making notes to themselves. Why don't you get her a
little notepad. If she has something she's afraid she want
will remember, she can just jot it down and refer
to it later.

Speaker 3 (40:28):
Eh, that sounds like it might work.

Speaker 7 (40:30):
Whatever, I want to go home, it's all goes.

Speaker 3 (40:34):
Time for search for Tomorra.

Speaker 8 (40:38):
Later that evening, Dub and Flossy are relaxing in their
living room.

Honey, would you like to do me a favor?

Speaker 3 (40:44):
What's that Sweedie?

Speaker 19 (40:46):
Go in the kitchen, get me a dec of ice cream?
And why don't you write it down on our little
note pad so you won't forget.

Speaker 8 (40:54):
Oh, don't be silly.

Speaker 15 (40:55):
I can remember edish of ice cream.

Speaker 19 (40:58):
Well, I want you to put those good frsh strawberries
on top of it. You better write that down so
you won't forget.

Speaker 15 (41:03):
It now, Dub, I may be a little forgetful, but
I think I can remember one little dish of ice
cream with strawberries on't it?

Speaker 1 (41:12):
Well?

Speaker 19 (41:12):
I want to whip cream on top of it too.
Are you sure you don't want to write this?

Speaker 10 (41:16):
Damn?

Speaker 15 (41:18):
I ain't some dribbling old ninny in a nursing home.
Ice cream strawberries whipped cream on top.

Speaker 19 (41:28):
Okay, hurry back, It's almost time for Wheel of Fortune.

Speaker 8 (41:32):
Flossy disappears into the kitchen. Dub listens as pots and
pans rattle, the microwave beeps and bleeps, and the blader
whirs and buzzes, and a mad frenzy. Fifteen minutes later,
Flossy finally emerges from the kitchen.

Speaker 15 (41:50):
