Speaker 1 (00:00):
Caf I Am six forty.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
You're listening to the John Cobelt podcast on the iHeartRadio apps.

Speaker 3 (00:06):
Lou Penrose I for John Cobelt. Good to be with
you on a very busy Wednesday, as everybody is out
on the freeway and everybody is on their way to
LAX or in the sky or landing after departing from Lax.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
But for a short period.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Of time, LAX was blocked last night, on the busiest
travel day of this entire holiday season.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Kfi's Michael Monks will fill us in on the details.
It was a protest or a strike or a threat
of a strike. What was going on?

Speaker 4 (00:37):
It was a protest by a union that is pretty
well known here in the city of Los Angeles. They
are people who have rallied behind some of the most
controversial worker oriented policies that have been adopted at LA
City Hall in recent years. They're known as Unite Here
Local eleven. They tend to represent folks who are in
the hospitality industry restaurants, hotels, and those who work at

(00:57):
the airport. What happened last night was traffic was already
a mass traffic and Los Angeles is a mess anyway.
It's particularly heavy during this busy travel season as people
get out of town or into town for Thanksgiving. And
yesterday evening, Unite here Local eleven members who work in
catering for airlines took to the streets, not the sidewalks,

(01:22):
the streets and blocked a busy intersection, keeping cars from
moving to where they needed to go as folks were
trying to get to their flight. Some people abandon their
cars and walked the rest of the way. These union
members were physically blocking some cars from moving forward and
arguing with folks who who said, look, we're gonna miss
our flight if you don't get out of our way.

(01:43):
But the union says the issues they were raising were
too important.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
So we're talking about pay.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
I mean, the busiest travel day at during a record
travel weekend in the most travel in seventeen years, and
they're bitching about pay.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
And this is the level. I mean, this is kind
of an extreme.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
This is a group that is protesting against a business
called Flying Food Group, and they provide some of the
catering for the airlines there in the airport, and this
union has members who work for them. The union says
they have been complaining for a long time to this
business about fire hazards, about locked doors that create these

(02:26):
fire hazards. They say some some equipment is broken, they
say some of their working conditions are unsafe, but they
also say they want a new contract. LAX is governed
by Los Angeles World Airports, and that is a body
that the City of Los Angeles oversees. So the union
was trying to get the attention of city officials, but

(02:46):
they certainly got the attention of folks who were trying
to get into or out of town.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Look, I get collective bargaining. I understand why that's important.
I get grievances, and there is proportionality to all this
blocking people for making their flights. What is reported to
be the most traveled day in the next seven days
is I think disproportionate to concerns about wage violations or

(03:15):
you know, their allegations of unsay working conditions. How long
until the police.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Broke it up.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
It took a couple of hours. I mean this was
a serious disruption. I mean two hours in airport travel
time is extraordinary. If you're trying to get there just
a couple of hours in advance of your flight, knowing
that you've got to go through a long line of security,
but that's all the time you had. By the time
you get in, you've missed the flights. And this is
not the time of year you want to be missing flights,
considering how booked everything is. And you're right, because if

(03:43):
you read some of the reaction online, it's highly unfavorable.
I mean, this is a union that is trying to
raise awareness of these issues and these allegations that they
have raised.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Had they stayed on the sidewalk, they.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
Probably would have gotten some attention from writers, even some
sympathetic honks. But once you step into the street and
you cause this type of stress, then you are affecting
people in a way where they're not likely to be
as sympathetic to whatever cause you're pushing. To the contrary,
they could be in favor of this business one way
or the other. It's just so disruptive, you know. Look,

(04:17):
we're hold on, say.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Let's talk about that for a second, because you said
that United here Local eleven kind of well known. They
have pulled stunts like this before. Los Anges Lapd said
that no arrests were made. How can you be in
the street and not be arrested for being in.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
The street, we might need a few hours loo for
me to explain the city of Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
Yeah, but you know, cops travel too, you know, cops
take time. There are families of law enforcement waiting in
that line on Century Boulevard two.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Look, you're right, the sidewalk is where they belong as
soon as they're not.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Like, that's fire in a crowded theater when you block traffic, like,
that's the line that you're not allowed.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
To cross, especially on that day.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
You know, if this would have been a group of
union workers who were blocking the bosses the executives from
going in, and that's a direct action that people who
are sympathetic to workers might nod their heads in.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Yeah, why not surround the parking lot of flying food groups? Right,
go find where their offices are and do a human
chain around that.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Get out of our way.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
But lou, to bring up just the theme of Los
Angeles and protests. When you think back to June and
we had the anti immigration enforcement protests that were taking
place here, you might have a lot of folks in
this community who are sympathetic to the people protesting federal
agents being here. But then when they go down to
the one oh one and shut down the freeway. That

(05:38):
changes because if I'm driving to work with no plans
or orders to arrest any suspected illegal immigrants, why are
you stopping me from traveling? And so now I'm less
likely to be sympathetic to you. This is a group, though,
that is behind a lot of policies here in Los Angeles,
whether it be rent control or the thirty dollar minimum

(06:00):
wage that is on its way to Los Angeles airport workers,
hotel workers before the Olympics arrive in twenty twenty eight.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Yeah, I remember seeing a woman back in June selling
literally selling hot dogs on the four or five to
people who are on the four five.

Speaker 4 (06:17):
If anything, were entrepreneurial and disruptive in Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Well, they accomplished the awareness raising, there's no question about that.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
We all know now what their beef is.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
But I think you're right, the blowback from this could
be bigger than any effort, any sympathy that they get.

Speaker 4 (06:36):
Yeah, there's some reports that they're supposed to be back
there again today. We just heard from Angie Armon that
that there is traffic already starting to build up, not
because of the protesters, but on the upper level of
lax a suppulvit of Boulevard is starting to look a
little hairy out there, so it's already backing up. But
if this protest goes awry again today, people will be
a little more aware of what's going on and maybe

(06:58):
a little angrier about it.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Okay, if i's Michael Monks, thanks so much.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
We'll keep an eye on this and check in with
you again if this starts all over again.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Look, I have no problem with collective bargaining.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
I have and I'm a Republican, and I think there's
a place for unions because that's where the strength is
of labor. So I have no problem with that. There
is a right way and a wrong way to do
all of this, and this is the wrong way for
the exact reasons that Monks just said. You're gonna get
people mad or at you. I don't know if you're
being paid enough. I don't know if you're being paid
fairly or not. I don't know if you're working in

(07:32):
unsafe conditions. I do know that there are opportunities all
over Los Angeles. So if you really feel like you're
gonna be fry cooked inside the room there, then quit
and get another job, all right, But if you want
to stay with the job and fight with management to
get your stupid two dollars an hour rais increase over
the next five years, then get out of our way.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Don't make your problems my problems.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
And that's something that a lot of these service worker
unions do not understand.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
So we'll break this down when we come back.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Lou Penrose in for John Cobelt on KFI AM six
forty Live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 5 (08:09):
You're listening to John Cobelt on demand from KFI AM
six forty.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Lou Penrose in for John Cobelt on The John Cobelt Show,
talking about this demonstration last night in front of Lax,
right before you get into Lax. I know exactly where
this is because I used to use when I traveled
out of Lax, like almost every week, I use the

(08:36):
Proud Bird Secret Way, and this was just at that intersect.
You know what The Proud Bird restaurant is along that
road and then you go in and take a left
and avoid Century. But they they found out the best
corner and the United Here Local eleven. These are service
workers unions.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
They're mad.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
They provide the in flight food or they work for
the company that provides the flight food, and workers said
that they were concerned they were receiving chemical burns on
the job. The workspaces were flooded, there's unsafe working conditions
and their wages violations. All right, whatever, but don't stop

(09:18):
people from traveling. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving week at
one of the most major airports in the United States.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Here is Matthew Seedorf of Fox eleven.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
But outside Lax, one of the busiest travel days of
the year, protesters have taken over this intersection right now.

Speaker 6 (09:36):
The good boy here century all of Arto Lax.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Yeah, they're all out there with the bongo drums. There's
always bongo drums with these people, and they are in
the street. You can demonstrate on the sidewalk. You cannot
demonstrate in the street, so you're ruined. Everybody else's demonstrating.
Let let me let's just go through this real slowly,

(10:04):
real quickly. I mean let's get let's go through this
real quickly, but very clearly.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
The purpose of a demonstration is to raise awareness.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
It is not to stop commerce.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
It is not it's not a boycott, it's not a
sit in it's not a lockout.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
The demonstration wait raises awareness.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
You are driving to the airport, you've got things to do,
You're sitting in traffic. You see a group of people
with a megaphone and a bunch of signs, just say, oh,
what's what's going on with them? And then the signs
should be clever enough to communicate your beef.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
And then you say, if you care at all to.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Be involved, you say, okay, uh, you know what, I
think that's right. I think I'm owning pistachios because I
think the pistachio farmers are not paying the pistachio workers
enough money. Or I'm not gonna go to the Starbucks
because the Starbucks people are right, or I am gonna
go to this sar Bucks because these stupid employees don't
have a leg to stand on. What do they mean

(11:04):
they want twenty six dollars now? Like whatever it is,
make the case on the sidewalk. That's the purpose of
a demonstration, and the larger demonstration, the bigger the impact
is going to be on raising awareness. That's where it stops.
And this is the problem with particularly this union. Do
unite here crowd the service workers' unions are the most obnoxious.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Unions in the union business.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
They are the most immature. They are often ridiculous in
their demands, and frankly, I would argue eighty percent of
them should not be unionized because their labor is just
not that valuable. There are certain realities in the world, right.

(11:49):
The person that hands you a cup of Starbucks coffee
is in a union.

Speaker 5 (11:56):
Now.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
The person that manufactured the cappuccino machine, the espresso machine
in the factory also in your union. Right that guy
is an engineer, uh, The barista not so much. The
guy that manufactures the equipment in the Starbucks he should
be in a union because his labor is valuable. The

(12:18):
person that hands you the cup of coffee after it
comes out of the machine not really that valuable, almost
completely replaceable. So you got to know your value and
the service industry just not that valuable.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
The sign says City of La why is flying roof
above the law?

Speaker 5 (12:40):
Right?

Speaker 3 (12:40):
So they're mad at the Flying Food Group and they're
asking the City of La since the City of La
oversees Los Angeles World Airport.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Well, by the way, La Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
World Airport over also oversees Ontario Go out to Ontario.

Speaker 7 (12:53):
Understand they can be in this strike or whatever you
know that we want to pull.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
That's right. Good for you, sir, scream at these people.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
It is I mean, there is such a diminishing level
of marginal return in support of these efforts.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
You heard Michael Monks in the first segment.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Everybody's now going one step further, taking to the street
to stop traffic when they're upset with ice, to stop
traffic when they're upset with their job. You can't do that.
That crosses the line. There is a concept of free speech.
And then of course the conditioning. The conditioner is fire

(13:37):
in a crowded theater. This qualifies for fire in a
crowded theater. You're putting yourself at risk. You're putting others
at risk. Somebody is gonna get hurt out there. You're
putting comps at risk because they got to go now
into traffic at a time when people are trying to
make a flight, so they have urgency, they are flustered,
they are upset. They're gonna try and go around the

(14:00):
car in front of them to get into a lane.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
It's just a disaster.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
So I put one hundred percent of the blame on
United Here Local eleven and I don't even want to
know what your grievance is. Now you know what you
lost me. You could have had me, but now go
get your shinebox.

Speaker 6 (14:23):
Right.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
So the protesters said they're going to be back, and
we're keeping an eye on it. I'm not sure what's
happening at the upper level there at LAX, but you
know what, let them come back, and I want to
see arrest and if our arrests are not made, then
we need to hold the chief of police accountable.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
It's just happening on one of the busiest travel days
of the year. Exactly.

Speaker 6 (14:44):
You know, it's really important that people take notice about
the people who are invisible behind the scenes.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
I hate these people. That's a spokesperson for Unite here.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
She said, that's right, we're doing it on purpose on
the busiest travel day of the year. This is happening
on one of the busiest travel days of the you exactly,
you know, it's really important that people take notice about
the people who are invisible behind the scenes.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Lady, you are so stupid.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
First off, we could have taken notice with you on
the sidewalk, like we're still in traffic you're not blocking traffic.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
And what is with this invisible thing? This is the
new word.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
Everybody feels like they're invisible and insists on being seen.
That was the big thing in Congress when the trans
woman wanted to use the bathroom and the Congress said, no,
you need to use the bathroom that you were born with,
or you can't use the girl's bathroom, fella, And that

(15:41):
was her big position, congress Woman McBride or Congress Trans McBride.
She said that they want to keep me invisible. What
is this invisibility thing? What are you talking about? You're
not invisible. You're quite visible. That we don't respect your
point of view doesn't make you invisible. The same goes

(16:04):
for these workers. They're not invisible. What does that even mean? Invisible?
Who in the workforce is visible? The receptionist is visible,
like everybody that works behind the counter in the kitchen.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
We're all invisible. Every one of us are invisible.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
It's it's like such an emotional statement, We're not going
to be invisible.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Grow up.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
Man.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Here's a woman that couldn't.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
She was literally people standing in front of her car
on Century Boulevard and she missed her flight.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
To Europe. Stop you hear the Unite Here guy.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
He's like, these are people's lives, right, because there are
people standing in the middle of the street risking losing
their lives.

Speaker 6 (16:56):
Stop.

Speaker 1 (17:01):
Yeah, she drops.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
The F bomb, but she's TikTok. She's like, I'm gonna
miss my ride and they could care less and on
go the bombo drums.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
Unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
We'll keep an eye on this, and I hope you're
not experiencing any of this if you're on the roadways.
Lou Penrose Info John Coblt on kf I Am six

Speaker 5 (17:28):
You're listening to John Cobelt on demand from KFI AM sixty.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
Lou Penrose Info John Coblt on The John Cobalt Show
talking about this disruption at LAX last night and a
potential continuation of a disruption as LAPD took control of
the situation last night reopened the intersection right in front
of LAX. No arrests were reported, but the group organizing

(17:56):
the demonstration, Unite Here Local eleven there were service Workers.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
Union said they will be back.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
They're demonstrating unsafe working editions and wages. They provide the
in flight food for the company, Flying Food Group, and
they decided to, you know, put on a dog and
pony show in the middle of traffic as people are
trying to go away for Thanksgiving on the busiest travel
day of the year.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Happening on one of the busiest travel days of the year, exactly.

Speaker 6 (18:26):
You know, it's really important that people take notice about
the people who are invisible behind the scenes.

Speaker 7 (18:32):
Lew and Michael, these morons that demonstrated and protested in
the street at LAX I can understand if they're on
the sidewalk, but like I believe it was, Michael said,
go to where the headquarters are protest with those people.
Don't get in the way of people that are trying
to get to their families, because if you get in
front of me, you're going to end up on the

(18:53):
roof of my car or under my wheels, and any
damage done, I'll sue you. Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
Hey, happy Thanksgiving to you. Just a little caution though,
they'll sue you. So that's the problem. Trust me what
I tell you. I would like to bump them with
the bumper, but then they'll fall down and claim disability
and you'll have to pay for it for the rest
of your life. So you can't even touch them like
you can even read the engine. Don't play games with them. No,

(19:22):
this is what I pay police for. The police need
to break out the billy clubs. I have been waiting
for the billy clubs since June. Why do we issue
billy clubs if we don't ever use them? This is
a perfect reason for the billy clubs. You can be sympathetic.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
To this union.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
You could be a member of this union. And I'm
not up to speed on their beef. What I do
know is that these unions tend to exaggerate because they
have an exaggerated sense of their own worth. But as
soon as they get into traffic, that's when the comps

(19:59):
need to break out billy clubs and then they'll learn.

Speaker 1 (20:04):
And by the way, I agree with you.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
The beef isn't with the people of Los Angeles or
the passenger community. The beef is with their own boss.
So control yourself and right embrace proportionality. Go find where
the office is for Flying Food Group and go be
disruptive there.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
But don't even get into traffic there.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
Just be outside the front and bang bongo drums there,
that's what you ought to.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
Be doing, and then I would have some respect for you.
Then i'd want to know. Now I have no interest
in helping you out.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
So like if you made me late to make a effort,
right like, now you've lost me. You lost everybody that
was flying out of Los Angeles last night. If they
hear that any effort is associated with the group that
maybe missed my flight on thanksgiving them, the answers no.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Whatever the question is whether it's reasonable or not, the
answers no.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
And like that's how we have to treat these unions
because they're way out of proportion. They think they own
the city and it's obnoxious and it needs to be
called out. And really the members should be ashamed of
the leadership.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
So we've got to like force shame.

Speaker 3 (21:24):
So when they all get back in a room and say, hey,
that backfired on us.

Speaker 1 (21:29):
Who thought of that idea? All right, you're fired. You're
no longer in charge.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
Of public awareness because you take it too far. But
there is a real immaturity that run like that runs
through the actions of this particular union, this local and
just a lot of the activists out there, just a
real immaturity, like it's not anchored in any strategy. You

(21:57):
actually didn't stop air Track, you didn't bring down Los Angeles.
Nobody cares now about your stupid beef with the Flying Food.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
Group, and you annoyed a lot of people. So congratulations,
well done.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Happy Thanksgiving to the idiots at Unite here Local eleven
as we move on all right onward. Eric Swalwell is
holding town hall meetings all across California as he is
the latest to throw his hat in the ring to
be the Democrat candidate for governor. I am underwhelmed by
the Democrat base. I am a Republican, so I'm not

(22:39):
voting for Eric Swalwell.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
But I am a political scientist.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
I'm a Polysci major, so I study these things and
I have to tell you from an objective point of
view as a POLYPCI guy, the Democrats bench is underwhelming
for candidate for governor. Now the Republican bench is underwhelming
as well. But the Republican bench for governor, lieutenant governor.

Speaker 1 (23:01):
Treasurer, secretary of state, senator.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
They're always underwhelming, which is part of our problem. So
I accept our problem. We have lifeless, flashlest candidates for governor.
But you guys have the letter D, which should guarantee you,
you know, an overwhelming majority of the registered voters in
the state, So how can you lose?

Speaker 1 (23:24):
And none of these people have any flash at all.
It's quite striking.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
You have the largest blue state in the nation, the
bluest blue state in the nation, the largest state like
the governor's seat brings you the highest profile in national
Democrat politics, which Newsom is using quite well. And there's
no air apparent at all, and nobody's got any steam
at all.

Speaker 1 (23:50):
And now there are more.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
People in the race, more Democrats in the race, which
is dividing up the votes for each Democrat. Get Tom
Steyer and he'll get all the tree huggers you'll get.
But Swawell he'll get, I don't know, the Trump haters
because he was the impeachment manager. Actually, Swawell will come
off looking like a moderate because Katie Porter is progressive,
and she comes off looking like a b ch and uh,

(24:14):
Antonio Vierra goos to forget it, that's a retreaded tire.
Uh and uh that's it. But each one of them
gets like four percent or eight percent.

Speaker 1 (24:25):
And now the.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
Republican candidate Chad Bianco of Riverside is actually leading the pack.
So I'm not sure exactly what the Democrats are doing.
But Swawell did hold the town hall meeting and it
blew up in his face as the issue of trans
women in the women's locker room came up and he

(24:47):
was unable to answer and it was a bad look
for We'll share that with you. Coming up next to
Lou Penrose on kf I Am six forty live on
the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 5 (24:58):
You're listening to John Cobelts on demand from KFI six.

Speaker 8 (25:04):
All right, we're going to break in. There is a
news conference now in Washington, d C. About the National
Guard members who were shot.

Speaker 9 (25:11):
They were shot. They're in critical condition as you can
see behind me. We have assembled the full force of
both the federal and state and local law enforcement agencies
to bring bear all of our resources to make sure
we find the perpetrator is responsible for this heinous act
and make no mistake, they will be brought to justice.
Since this is an assault on a federal law enforcement officer,

(25:32):
this will be treated at the federal level as an
assault on a fed law enforcement officer. The FBI will
lead out on that mission with our interagency partners, to
include the Department of Homeland Security Secret Service atf DEA,
and we're thankful for the Mayor's.

Speaker 10 (25:47):
Assistance in this matter.

Speaker 9 (25:48):
The Metropolitan Police Department and their skills in investigating homicides
and gun shootings in this city is exceptional.

Speaker 10 (25:55):
We will work together collaboraily.

Speaker 9 (25:57):
Because this is a matter of national security, because it's
a matter of pride. President Trump has been informed, We've
been in contact with the White House.

Speaker 10 (26:05):
We will shortchange the American public with.

Speaker 9 (26:08):
No resources, to make sure we find and safeguard our
nation's capital right here in Washington, DC and bring anyone
responsible for this heinous.

Speaker 10 (26:16):
Act of violence to justice.

Speaker 9 (26:20):
I would lastly like to add to the American public
in the world, please send your prayers to those brave
warriors who are in critical condition and their families.

Speaker 10 (26:29):
They are here serving our country.

Speaker 9 (26:31):
They are here protecting everyday Americans and citizens around the
world in our nation's capital. They are the heroes of
this day, and we must remember them on this day
and every day, and their families and the sacrifice they
have made. I will now turn it over to Chief
Carol the Metropolitan Police Department.

Speaker 10 (26:45):
Thank you.

Speaker 11 (26:49):
Good after you in everyone. My name is Jeff Carroll On,
the Executive Assistant Chief. You're at the Metropolitan Police Department.
At approximately two fifteen this afternoon, members of the DC
National Guard. We're on high disability patrols in the area
of seventeenth and I Street Northwest when a suspect came
around the corner, raised his arm with a firearm and
discharged at the National Guard members. The National Guard members,

(27:12):
there were other members that were in the area. They
were able to after some back and forth, able to
subdue the individual and bring them in the custody within moments.
Members of law enforcement in the area were also able
to assist and bring that individual into the custody. At
this time, as the director mentioned, the National Guard members
are being treated at a local hospital. DC Fire and
Ems responded to the scene to provide first aid for

(27:35):
those individuals and transport them to a local hospital. The
suspect in this case was also transported for treatment at
a local hospital.

Speaker 10 (27:43):
Mayor, thank you.

Speaker 12 (27:45):
I'm Muriel Bowser.

Speaker 10 (27:46):
I'm the mayor of Washington, d C.

Speaker 12 (27:48):
And I to want to send my thoughts and prayers
to the families of the guardsmen and to the guardsmen
who are in critical condition in a local hospital. I
am joined by members in leadership from the DC National Guard,
from the West Virginia National Guard, United States Secret Service,

(28:11):
Deputy may Apia Fire Chief Donnelley, and Metro's general manager
Randy Clark, and we join with the FBI Director in
ensuring that MPD investigates the US Attorney prosecutes this case
to the fullest extent of the law. I've had the

(28:32):
opportunity to breathe US Attorney General Pambondi, who was speaking
to the President when I called, as well as the
United States Attorney Pierrot, who assured me that this case
will have her offices complete attention.

Speaker 6 (28:51):
Is there any other suspect?

Speaker 5 (28:54):
Chief?

Speaker 1 (28:55):
Sure?

Speaker 11 (28:56):
So now at this time there was no indication there
was any other suspect. The one suspect that was involve
this incident, they were shocked during the interaction and they
were transport to the hospital for treatment is validated.

Speaker 10 (29:06):
Need keep the National Guard here in DC.

Speaker 12 (29:09):
What we know, Andrea, is that this is a target
at shooting. One individual who appear to target these guardsmen.
That individual has been taken into custody.

Speaker 13 (29:19):
Man, can you tell us any more details on the
condition of the two National Guards and whether or not
anyone else was injured, And a quick question PROTU for
the FBI director. You said that we'll make sure we
find the perpetrators for this act. So just to clarify,
the person believed to be responsible is in custody and
there are no other suspects.

Speaker 11 (29:41):
Sure, so I think I can start out again, Chief
Carol from MPD. So both the individuals, the guard members,
they aren't critical, and the condition a local hospital at
this time being treated. At this point, we have no
other suspects. We have reviewed video from the area. It appears,
like I said, to be alone gumman that raised the
firearm and ambushed these members of the National Guard, and
he was quickly taken into custody their National Guard members
and law enforcement members any sense and voted. You know,

(30:04):
at this time, obviously we're very in the priminary stages
of investigations. You know, there's a lot of things, a
lot of agents that are here from various federal agencies,
law enforcement agencies. We have the full power of the
FBI and or federal partners here in the task force.
So we're looking at all those different aspects. But we
don't have any motors arms. The National guardsmen that were shot,
I'm told they were armed.

Speaker 1 (30:23):
Did they get off at this time.

Speaker 11 (30:25):
That's part of the pulminary investigation.

Speaker 10 (30:26):
And you don't wait how the suspect was.

Speaker 11 (30:31):
Sure, so how this usk was apprehended. As I said,
the individual, the suspect came around the corner. He immediately
started firing a firearm at the two National Guard members.
Uh So at that time, there were other National Guard
members that were in the area. Uh they heard the gunfire.
They actually uh were able to intervene and to kind
of hold down the suspect after he had been shot
on the ground until law enforcement got there within moments.

Speaker 10 (30:52):
The shots national lugement.

Speaker 1 (30:54):
At this point, we're.

Speaker 11 (30:54):
Still investigating exactly who shot the individual. It's not clear
at this time kind of ana, we don't know what
kind of weapon there was. DC Police. It happened right
in front of the Metro, although there is no indication
that the perpetrator was on the Metro. So there's Metro
Transit police in the area and obviously being on Seventeenth
Street by the White House, Uniformed Division Secret Service for
in the immediate area as well.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
And if weapon the alleged we do not know at
this time.

Speaker 12 (31:19):
We're going to be able to type a couple of morning.

Speaker 4 (31:21):
He's been able to question the suspectories to his conditions
so severely.

Speaker 10 (31:24):
He's on the video of that conversation.

Speaker 11 (31:26):
Sure, and so as I said, we're very preliminary in
the investigation, so we're looking to all aspects of who
the individual is, his connections. At this time, he's still
in the hospital receiving treatment.

Speaker 9 (31:34):
And I would like to I would just like to
add the reason that this suspect is in the reason
that this suspect is in custody is because of the
bravery of the men and women of the National Guard
who responded due to their extensive training to secure American lives.
Today there was not any further injury and any further shootings.
We should highlight the fact that the men and women

(31:55):
of law enforcement, the Inner Agency, the Department of War,
and the National Guard executed their train with great precision
today and prevented an even greater tragedy from befalling us.
These National guardsmen are heroes and we must pray for
their safety and their speedy recovery. And as a chief
set we are in the preliminary stages of this investigation.
We will run down every single lead, every piece of evidence.

(32:18):
This is the power of the US government at its
best at the state, local, and federal level. That is
why this interagency group is standing behind us to assure
America in the world that we will continue to keep
DC safe.

Speaker 10 (32:29):
And thankfully we have Metropolitan Police Department, the.

Speaker 9 (32:32):
National guardsmen and federal agents, and the Department of Justice
and an Attorney General willing to prosecute the mission to
keep Americans safe. And President Trump has rightly stated that
this heinous act will be investigated, and he is thanked
the National guardsmen and women and the men and women
of law enforcement.

Speaker 1 (32:53):
At the time, why did the West Virginia governor seated nation?

Speaker 8 (32:58):
Okay, you have been listening to a live news conference
in Washington, d C. We have been telling you that
two National Guard troops who were shot died, but as
you heard FBI Director Cash Ptel just say, they are
in critical condition in a hospital. So again, two National
Guard troops have been shot near the White House. It

(33:18):
happened at a mass transit area. They are in critical
condition and we will have more coming up.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
