Grand Rapids Residents Warned: Please Don’t Recycle Your Cannonballs

In one of the more unusual spring cleaning reminders, the Kent County Recycling Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan is asking residents not to dispose of Civil War-era cannonballs at local recycling sites. This follows a recent incident where someone actually tried to toss one out. Cannonballs are classified as potentially hazardous historical items, and the center is urging folks to call authorities or local museums instead of dropping them at the curb.

T. Rex Leather? Scientists Say They’re Growing It in a Lab

A group of biotech startups claims they're working on producing the world’s first lab-grown “Tyrannosaurus rex leather.” The idea? Use fossilized collagen proteins as a genetic blueprint, then reverse-engineer those sequences in the lab to create luxury leather that mimics the feel of real dino skin. It’s not quite Jurassic Park, but the science behind it is raising eyebrows—and plenty of ethical and scientific questions. Realistically, the product may only resemble dinosaur leather in theory, but if it works, it could shake up the fashion industry.

need to know for the day with Nina's what's trending?

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Have you done your spring cleaning?

Speaker 3 (00:05):
All those drawers you just left sitting there for years,
but now it's time.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
What did you find?

You tidy it up?

Speaker 2 (00:11):
My Nintendo DS?

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Sorry, okay, you're really hanging out every word I said
for the first time ever? Ive you?

Speaker 4 (00:17):
Yeah everything?

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Why like a harder for it? I bought a battery
and a game Madagascar too.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
That's what got Victoria has been wanting to talk about
I reckon.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
I sent that in.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Well, I bring that up because you do have to
be careful with what it is that you throw away.
There is a recycling center in Grand Rapids, Michigan that
has had to issue a gentle reminder not to throw
out your Civil War era cannonballs during.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Your spring cleaning.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
How many of those with us?

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Somebody tried to throw away a Civil era cannonball? First
of all, aren't those worth something? And second, what is it?

Speaker 5 (00:56):
It's cannon ball, the thing that goes in a cannon
and you shoot out a cannon when you jump into
a pool, vise, when you jump into a pool and I'm like.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
What how do they have this? And like what I
mean never seen a cannon they shot in like war?
I've seen it from a forties.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Yeah, they existed in real life.

Speaker 6 (01:14):
Too, but like why would someone have one without the cannon?
And also I would throw it out to bid and
have the cannon to go with it.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Have both, that's lame. Well it's actually using a bomb. Oh,
so like it's still expo it could be explosive. So
after it's been around for so well that we needed
to have the bomb squad Colm and to like handle
the cannon so they couldn't just have it chilling in
their recycling center.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
That explosive cannon balls too, I I didn't know that.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
I think they were just heavy balls to break ships,
And now.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
It makes more sense that they were explosive.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Actually I didn't know that either, So grenade exactly, Zack.

Speaker 6 (01:53):
But aren't they really heavy? They can't throw any of
them without a candy sling shot. You know, I want
to get a canon, of course you do.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
That'd cool.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
This is where you really want.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Jubile be the first to purchase a t Rex leather handbag.
What what t Rex leather exactly? So no, I googled
it most of the times and there were multiple stories
about it. There's a bio there. I'm telling you right now,
there's a biotech startup that has collaborated to create lab

(02:29):
grown leather from fossil remnants of the Trannosaurus Rex. They're
aiming for a more sustainable and ethical luxury material item,
so this will also be contributing to the ethical luxury
material industry. But if they can master this with the DNA,
then they'll be able to create t rex leather and then.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Ostrich loafers for a long time. Do you imagine having
t rex loafers?

Speaker 4 (02:52):

Speaker 3 (02:53):

be like, sim I don't feel right like carrying around
the crocodile ones or yeah, I.

Speaker 4 (03:01):

caught by one of them. Be like, sorry, this is
your cousin, but t Rex no chance getting caught.
