Speaker 1 (00:02):
Had RSLI known her last day on Earth would be
the day she went to score drugs from Davon Wallace,
she never would have left her apartment, never would have
left her baby boy, Sebastian. At the very least she
would have held him a little tighter one last time.
But like most people, she wasn't psychic. She couldn't have

(00:23):
known that her final moments would be spent inside the
hot trunk of a burning car, a cruel and violent
into a life barely lived. To fully understand how it
all went down, we've got to start at the beginning.
Despite her struggles with opioids, no one could deny or
sally was a damn good mother to Sebastian. After his dad, Danny,

(00:47):
was out of the picture, it was just the two
of them. There was no distance. She wouldn't go for
that kid. They were poor, but little sebby wanted for nothing.
As a teen mom she'd sacrificed her youth for is.
But there was no doubt his birth also made her
want to be a better person. When she looked at

(01:08):
his face, she knew she'd do anything for him, give
up her whole friends, get clean, even sleep with Sebastian's
bumbling grandfather, Lenny. Her relationship with Lenny wasn't something she
was proud of. The thought of it made her sick,
but she'd been in survival mode. There were worse things
she could do than exchange her body for safe housing.

(01:30):
Sebastian was worth it. Like so many women before her,
Ourseli eventually learned how to function as a single mother.
But then Danny came back fresh from Rehab. As much
as her son needed a father in his life, her
fragile sobriety was thrown off balance by his unexpected return.

(01:52):
Everything would have to be recalibrated. Haro Selli knew how
to be sober when it was just her and Sebby,
but she didn't know how to care for Danny too.
They had always brought out the worst in each other,
the screening, the chaos, the self loathing. She dreaded the
return to dysfunction. However, Wehab appeared to actually change Danny.

(02:13):
He was kinder, less needed than before. In some ways
he was like his fifteen year old self again, before
the drugs ravaged his brain and body. Most of all,
he seemed so devoted to their son. Daddy, where were you, Dranson?

(02:37):
You were picking up trash like wally the robot. He
did well, it was something like that, but you know what,
I pick up all the trash in the world to
get back to you. I want to go with you
next time because I can help. I'm not never going
to leave you again. Okay, never. Pinky promise. No, an't

(02:58):
do pinky promises. Why not? Because piggies are too small.
Don't promises are way better. Phone promise. How do you
do that? Let me show you. Put up your thumb
like this. Good, okay. Now we put them together and
we make our promise to each other. You phone promises.

(03:21):
Stay here forever with me and Mommy, no matter what,
even if aliens come and put you on their spaceship,
even if they're big, ugly green ones with eight eyeballs
and tentacles on their fingers. Get you right. All right, Sebastian,
bed time. You've got school tomorrow. What about Daddy? He

(03:43):
has to go now. Don't worry, said, we'll see you tomorrow,
but Mommy, daddy has to stay here. You just from promised.
I know I heard. I just wanted them to know
that I'm not going anywhere. Merest Day for both of you.

(04:07):
Against her better judgment, Rasselli allowed Danny to live with
her and Sebe. After all, wasn't it better for her
child to grow up with both parents in the household?
Arcelli's own family had cut ties with her, and part
of her had always dreamed of domestic bliss. She was
no Martha Stewart, but she did want the simple kind
of happiness that stability and trust could bring. Maybe in time,

(04:32):
the three of them could achieve it. However, her dreams
of bliss were short lived. One day, Danny's mother, Annette,
confronted Aroselli about the affair with Lenny. Arasselli didn't know
how she found out, but she was quick to admit
the truth. Her habit of honesty was admirable, but it
would activate an irreversible chain of events. Later that same day,

(04:55):
Danny Confronted rcelli too. He stormed into the apartment, rage
and Ain in his face. This was the version of
Danny that arise Eli knew all too well. His facade faded.
They looked at each other as raw reality replaced illusions.

(05:17):
Why are you huffing and puffing like that? There's water
in the kitchen. If you're out of breath. My mom
says that you can sleeping with my dad. She has proof.
I admitted it, so it's true. Yeah, it's true, and
don't look at me like that. You and Renny. He
was there for us when we needed him. Kind of
you were? How can you not be disgusted with yourself

(05:39):
and too exposed Sebastian to that? You are sick. I'm sick.
You abandoned us for Rehab and that gives you some
kind of right to judge me. Get Clean, to get better, bag. WHOA,
I didn't have that luxury. I got myself clean. Didn't
have no one holding my hand either. I was supposed
to be a first story. I did everything for this

(06:01):
fresh start and you just ruined everything, and clearly you
don't even care. I get it, your hair, but we
aren't even together like that. I let you live here
so wee can co parent. I don't owe you jack.
Your Sebastian doesn't deserve such a shitty mom. Well, this
shitty mom has put a roof over his head and
your yeah, and now we both know how you did that.

(06:22):
Piece of ship. Get The funk out of my house,
hunting this place at yours. It's my mom's great so
go ask your slum Lord Mama for a place to live,
because it's mining on the lease. All Right, tell Sebastian,
I'm gonna keep my promise. Ours selly had always put

(06:55):
up a tough exteria, but she was not ready for
all the emotions ster within her. Anger, embarrassed, misunderstood, helpless, frustrated, sad.
All at once, a twinge of the old urges came
back like a spasm. She needed immediate relief from her thoughts,
as if she would be consumed by them. But the

(07:16):
real death blow came when Annette called her again an
hour after Danny left. A little backstory for context. Annette
never liked arise Elli. She always blamed her for getting
Danny hooked on drugs, and it didn't help that Danny
and Rosali had stolen from her to get high. For
Sebastian's sake, Annette put aside her grudge and allowed them

(07:39):
to dwell in one of her properties. But this latest
betrayal was too much for her to bear. And on
Ourselli's end, and Nette was the only person she knew
who could match her own fiery temper. Truth be told,
Aroselli was a little afraid of her, even over the phone.

(08:03):
If you want him, you can have him, Lenny, that
is not Danny. I don't want either of them in it.
I really really don't. Oh why not? You've got another
John on a hook somewhere. Like I told Danny, I
did what I did from a child. Stop making excuses
for yourself, you manipulative little tramp, and don't drag that
innocent boy into your dirt either. I want you out

(08:26):
of the apartment. Where are we supposed to go? You
can go live in one of those tents on Adelaide
for all I care, or with Lenny at the cafe.
But if you really care about Sebastian, you'd realize you're
the worst thing in the world for him. Fuck you.
You know I'm right, even if you can't admit it
to yourself. My son would be better off with you.

(08:47):
You couldn't even raise your own son right please, Danny
doesn't have to be humiliated by the fact his mom
is a skank. Fuck you in it, m she didn't
know what else to say, but one thing was now
clear as day. She needed drugs fast. Nothing else would

(09:11):
stop the pain from the wounds inflicted on her by
the Martelli family. It's easy for us to criticize our
Seli for what she did next, but as we entered
the tragic part of our story, tried to remember she
was just a woman who battled demons and lost. Not
The metaphorical demons either, the living, breathing ones who surrounded

(09:32):
her and made her life hell. Davon Wallace was an
old classmate of oursellies and Danny's. The three of them
had gone to mcclemen's high school together, but their relationship
was mostly transactional. Davon sold drugs and they bought them.
It never got more complicated than that. Somehow, Marselli trusted

(09:52):
him more than she trusted most people. After all, he
always had what she needed. So she left Sevy with
a babysitter and drove over to Davon's place in East Oakland.
It's been a while since she stood at his doorstep,
but it felt like a muscle memory. The feeling scared her.

(10:13):
Aris Sally had a bad feeling as she knocked on
his door. Deep down she prayed he wouldn't be home.
The small voice within told her to leave, to go
back and fight her enemy sober and she was so close,
but when she turned to leave, that's when the door

(10:34):
creaked open. Are This? Is that you let up deep?
Come on, girl, give me a hug. Showing up all
unannounced and ship, it's been a minute. No, you ain't
here just to say hi. What you need? Baby, you know,
and I thought you went and got all cleaned up

(10:56):
on me and ship. Should we go inside? You know
the way. Baby, your baby, doing good, baby, Oh yeah,
real good. He's not a baby anymore, though. Here's a
picture of him from last week. Ship, Goddamn big, because,
motherfucker now. But why his hands so shaped like that? Thought,

(11:20):
not his fault. He looks like his Daddy. True, true.
So what you need, I got you damn hot. I
don't even know. I just want to take the edge off.
What kind of is because you know, I got different
strokes for different folks. Baby, baby, Daddy, drama, Baby Daddy's Mamma, drama, life, ship,

(11:40):
I mean ship. God Damn, that sounds like you know.
I don't sound like the edge to me. That sounds
like the same old, same old ship with y'all exactly.
So Hook me up with some Benzos so I could
deal with it. Benzos might make you feel good, he
ain't gonna help you when you deal with this motherfucking
thing you got going on right now. So you're a doctor.

(12:01):
Now I gotta convince you to write me a prescription.
What the fun? Who? Hold? Hold, don't get all crazy
and ship. I'm not saying no, but I know you
and Danny said we were kids. Y'All just need to
fix ship for real. Take your junk as a couple
of therapy or something. I'm just saying, my life must
be really fucking bad for you, of all people, to
be lecturing me. Baby Girl. I hang the therapist and none.

(12:24):
I'm just saying you need to step back and think
about something like life. Choices. Funk off. See, there you go.
Let here. You got two options. You can take these
pills and sunk up your life, or you can get
a role model for your son, like you're supposed to be.
Sebastian is fine. I'm just saying kids pick up on
that ship. Don't make your problems his problems. I mean

(12:45):
it ain't right, but see, I ain't no motherfucking but
you gotta choose. I'M NOT gonna lie. Part of me
has pissed at you. For making me feel bad, but
the other part is great for my drug dealer decide
to have a conscience. For some reason, I got lays
to me. You're a good girl. Go take care of

(13:08):
your baby. How come you we never have any kids,
because I am crazy. That's why I got enough going
on as it is. Looking around as motherfucker for like what?
Who The fund is this bitch? Divon, excuse me, who
are you, bitch? What the Fund are you doing out here?

(13:31):
Mind your fucking business. Get your ass back in your
room where you're supposed to be. Damn, I know you
didn't bring her. Old Ask here to be in my competition? Old,
I'm not even is this your niece or cousin or something?
Oh my God, you did Seeven Hun Hey, hey, you
heard what the funk I just said. Get your ass
out before I make you ourself. Is Stomach dropped as

(13:56):
she suddenly realized what she had walked into. She took
another look at the girl, who couldn't have been older
than fourteen. All Day long, or silly's own issues had
consumed her every thought. Not Anymore, Davon. Are you pimping
out this little girl? Depends on what you call Pampan.

(14:20):
This isn't funny. Are you making money off her? Ship, ship, but,
as you can see, she needs to be broken in
and out. Mandy, what are you doing out your room?
Come here, you're hurting my arms. It's supposed to hurt
you little Oh, you didn't tell me you had company. Davon.

(14:44):
Our silly right, you went to mcclyman with my son. Yeah,
we met when I was about the same age as her.
All that talk about kids, Davon, and you're over here
selling them. Look, look, look, look, I said I had layers.
Just saying that being a good guy. I know I
gotta love for you are, but you gotta get your

(15:04):
ass up out of here. You're sucking up everything. Yeah,
I'm going all right, straight to the police. I know
you didn't bring us snitching bitch in my house. Mama, Mama,
she just on that junkie talk ship. She tripping. She
Ain't gonna do a motherfucking thing. Look, I don't I
don't want to. I know I'm not perfect, but this,
this is just too funked up. It's evil. How am

(15:25):
I supposed to just walk away? You think you got
a choice? You're in on it too. Huh? How are
you gonna call yourself a mother? Sorry, Ari, Ari Ari,
you're talking reckless right now, bitch. MM HMM. So you're
making threads and thrown around insults. Whatever. I'm leaving, but

(15:49):
I suggest you take this girl back to her home,
wherever that is. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
all right, you forgot something. What you Dr Ugs? You're
gonna need him after all. Bits, I expect you to
handle this. Clean up your miss sick and tired of

(16:10):
your bringing problems up in here. Mama, what don't suposed
to do? Ship? God Damn, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't
play dumb. Fix this. The details I don't want to
know about. I'm gonna give her some of these bands,
I said. I don't wanna know. Rotten as it was,

(16:36):
Davon really did have a soft spot for our sally.
He had no respect for women in general, but she
was a friend. And then she lay on the ground unconscious.
He felt guilty, but he wouldn't cross his mother for anyone.
Could he spare our sally's life and keep his mom happy?
It seemed impossible. Then he got a phone call that

(16:57):
would change everyone's fate. Some today. Bit You got some
motherfucking nerve. Hit My motherfucking I ain't got nobody else
to call. No, I wouldn't give a fuck. Find out
where she's. Where you at right now, though? I'm in
with open can you come pick me up? Le Your

(17:18):
ass down there in the bottoms for real, for Real,
after that fake as stunt you just for Daddy. Please,
I'm sorry, please come get me. All Right, man, I'm
gonna give you this one last chance, though. Angela was
blood thirsty. She had been dreaming of revenge ever since
the girl named Shanta ran away and caused a near

(17:40):
fatal accident. Both of those bitches need to go. Two birds,
one stone. I got your Mama, I got you. They are.
Sally's situation was Paul US until he picked up Shante.

(18:02):
Davon was glad to have more time to figure out
what to do. Ar Sally was beginning to stir, so
he injected her with a sedative and put her in
a sleeping bag. He tossed her over his shoulder and
walked outside to his car. Please, Sevy, what the funk
were you thinking? Man? You got me in a fund

(18:24):
up position right now. You know that. Right don't, I won't,
I don't say anything. Please, I gotta fear this ship
out later. For now, get your motherfuckering asked in her trunk, Bitch, please. Davon,

(18:46):
our sally remained immobile and unaware for a good long time.
By the time she came to Davon's situation at Freedom
House had escalated. Unable to speak or move, R s
Eli sense she was in danger. Then the fire started
and she knew there was no chance of rescue. Davon

(19:11):
had survived his injuries and managed to get out of
the car. Burned and half blind, he could barely save himself,
and so he left his friend to the flames. You
can only imagine where things went from that point. No
need to get into the gruesome details. Though it was

(19:32):
the end of the road for R S ell, it
wasn't the end of the story. The violence inflicted upon
her would not be in vain. After all, there was
another young woman out there who could still be saved
from a similar fate. Chante alone in the world and
at the mercy of the same forces that killed Ursel,

(19:53):
she would need a voice to advocate for her, protect
her from any more thoughtless, senseless suffering. Let no one
say that the brutality depicted in our story is improbable
or unusual. Here we've seen the reflection of society's shadows
and underworld, formed by mankind's ugliest traits, thousands of years

(20:14):
of Patriarchy culminating in a present day nightmare. The patriarchal
system created and disposed of girls like our sally and Chantey.
It cared nothing for them beyond their physical sacrifices. No more.
Next time would be different because, with the right storyline, Chantey,

(20:36):
a hood rat from Ballejo, would be the hope and
savior of future generations of downtrodden women resist refused cafes
and shambles. Pipe bomb. Five injured, including Lenney. One man

(21:00):
in critical condition. No motive or suspects known yet, but
all evidence points to one person. ME. Right now, that
evidence is a secret between me and Blah. Do you
want some more coffee? Hello, are you all key? Yeah,
I'm fine, just kind of lost, I guess, lost home.

(21:24):
I'm not really up for talking about this right now. Basil, sure,
I get it. My coworker, Basil attractive, artistic, sympathetic. He's
been a good friend to me these last few months. However,
until I figure this ship out, I can't trust him,
even if he did help me out of a very
sticky situation. You can't trust me, an I don't trust anyone,

(21:49):
not even myself. Well, will you at least tell me
what you are doing in that storage Laka, I could
ask you the same. A little weird how you knew
exactly where to find me. You're right, it is weird.
Confession time. What is it? I put an air tag
in your trunk. You we're stalking me. Look, when you

(22:10):
told me about your block outs, I was concerned, especially
since you refused to see a doctor. I left the
trucker in your car to keep an eye on you.
After the bomb, I was able to look at you
at the story Basil. That's so creepy and such a
violation of privacy. What the Hell were you thinking? My
instincts are never wrong, which is lucky for you me. Lucky? Please, fine,
only lucky one then, because I'm glad you're okay. Why

(22:34):
does he have to look at me like that? And
it's completely inappropriate for him to be holding my hand
this way, especially since, Hey, Bab deep conversation over here,
since Basil is Rebecca's boyfriend. They've been dating for three
months now. She seems crazy about him. Yeah, it's been

(22:56):
a while, dad. Let me look at you. Oh, she
your your head. You said it was only a scratch.
It is only a scratch because it's a full on Gash.
You can't just put a band aid on it and
call it a day. You need stitches. Let's go. I'm
taking you to the hospital, Rebecca. It's fine. There's people
who got it a lot worse than this. Then at

(23:16):
least let me dress it with a clean bandage at
my place. What she is persistent. When you guys were kids,
this is nothing, believe me. Come on, see a lit
of you. Rebecca barely acknowledges my existence these days. I
can't be mad. After all, I did a greatst spy
on her for the FBI, even if I am doing

(23:38):
a very bad job at it. Did they? Where's everyone going? Hey, oh,
and Rebecca's decided to be Basil's nurse. AH, they're so
cute it's gross. How about you? It's not like I
was there when the bomb went off, running errands with
my grandma. Well, that's luck. Why is everyone telling me

(23:59):
how lucky I am? I hate it. I'm not lucky,
I just wasn't there. Okay, that's it, he's fine. Sorry,
I'll never cool you lucky again. By the way, I
hear Lenny's going to be okay. His bodyguard not so much.
Let me ask you, do you think someone was trying
to target lenny? Obviously he's not exactly the most popular
guy in Oakland Right now, is he? Don't get me wrong,

(24:21):
he's the worst mayor of all time, but does he
really deserve to die? I guess someone driving a black
accurate feels he does. Wait, the bomber drove a black car.
That's what they're saying on the news. Take that for
whatever it's worth. That means it wasn't me. I thought
we just confirmed that I don't drive a black accurate.
Is this my exhoneration? But I was in a storage

(24:42):
unit with materials for bombs. The only way I could
have thrown the bomb as if I was driving someone
else's car, which means someone would have been helping me. Shit.
Is someone else involved in this? Am I being framed? Sorry,
I'm kind of out of it. Yeah, okay, so I

(25:04):
know you've got a lot on your plate right now,
but since the others left. I want to talk to
you about something. Shoot, I think there's a route among us,
a rat like in a mob movie. I'm serious. Someone's
been feeding info to your old friends at the bureau.
Nothing major, just little things. So far. Are you asking
if it's me? I know it's not you. You don't

(25:25):
know anything, because Rebecca already thinks you're a knock. This
is someone in our inner circle, someone we count on,
and that's not something Rebecca can accept. If I'm such
a Nark, why are you sharing this with me? That's
a great question, Bela, glad you asked. In a nutshell,
I want you to use your magical Leftbi powers to
help us find the rat. That's not a good idea.

(25:46):
If it's Rebecca you're worried about, I can tell you
I can't. Why not? Because I'm on the other team
and I'll only make things worse for everyone if I
can involved. We're on opposite sides, but I can't bring
myself to fully train my friends. So until I figure
out what's happening with these blackouts, the less I know

(26:06):
the better. Hold on, I gotta get this. It's my grandma. Hello,
you need to get home right now it's Savannah. What's wrong?
What's wrong with Savannah? Just get here. Okay, I'm on
my way. We'll have to continue this some other time.
I gotta go. Is Savannah okay? I don't know. Do
you want me to come with no, if it's bad news,
I'd rather deal with it alone. Savannah, is she honey?

(26:35):
Over here, this is Dr Goldstein, Savannah's new on call physician.
Your grandmother was right. Youtube are definitely twined. Why are
you here so late? Because I asked him to come.
Look at her eyes. They're open. So what? She does
that all the time. And Watch as I move my finger.
You see she's following the movement. Grand I don't understand.

(26:59):
It's too early. That's safe for sure, and I'll run
some more tests tomorrow. But it's possible that your sister
has moved into a minimally conscious state. What's that? For
these last months she's been what we call a vegetative state. Now,
in that state there's no intentional movement, no speech or

(27:19):
visual tracking. All this is to say I see signs
that she's moved into a new phase, one that indicates
positive cognitive improvement. It means someday soon, we could have
our savannah back.
