Did Schmidt HAVE to hurt the two loveliest women on the planet? What happened first, the real world awkward scene work between Hannah and Dameon, or the written scene between Cece and Coach? Why doesn't anyone acknowledge Jess's singing talent? What happened to the loftmate's sibilings?!

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Hey, it's a laft meeting. Left meeting calling a laft meeting.
What's up, roomies? How you doing? How we feeling today?
Feeling good? I'm feeling really good, having a great day.
Sunshine all the time I'm here in la It's nice, right,

(00:40):
and you know, don't be like, well, let's talk about sunshine.
The rest of us are freezing. I lived in Toronto, Okay,
for many, many years. I lived in Canada for a
billion years. Edmonton. Hello, you can't get colder than Edmonton.
It's like minus seventy eight in March, so I've earned this, Okay.
I don't want to hear any of this like she
has no idea or I love seasons. I love seasons too,

(01:05):
but it is very nice to be sitting here in
February such an after all of my cold Canadian springs.
Love you, Canada. This is no you know, like reflection.
I can. I can enjoy the warm weather and miss Canada.
Two things can be true, all right. You guys know
how these loft meetings work. You send in all of
these wonderful questions and thoughts and ideas and experiences you've

(01:28):
had her on this show. I read them. I delight
in them, and then I do my best to answer everything. Okay, Hi, Hannah,
I'm deep in my three hundredth kidding kind of watch
of New Girl and it occurs to me this show
never mentions Jess can sing. She does sing on the show,
but like her vocals are never celebrated, no one is

(01:50):
surprised by her talent. I was wondering if that was
a show decision, like, is it a wink to the
audience who knows Zoe's abilities, or was this a Zoe
decision to focus on acting and not singing on the show.
Thanks for making an incredible podcast. It's been fun to
relive this series with your commentary and behind the scenes stories.
Rachel m You know it's so funny. You know, we

(02:11):
just did the recap for X's and I think Zoe
says something in it that just made me laugh, where
she says something like, I have a natural instinct for comedy.
It made me laugh all out so much because I
was like, y'all cheeky writers, doing a little inside joke
for yourself. She says that as Jess, but obviously Zoe

(02:34):
is an adreal Dalen for comedy. I think it's the
same with the singing. I remember reading the pilot right
where she goes like she sings to herself a lot,
remember that from the pilot, and I was like, they
have to make some reference to singing, like especially when
this show came out, like Zoe was front and center

(02:55):
with her band. Everybody knew what an incredibly talented singer
she was, and she was on tour and she was
doing like wonderful. So I think they were really smart
to make Jess not Zoe, you know, just be like
a replica of Zoe. They created a distinct character in Jess,

(03:16):
but you've got this talent in this actress. She can sing,
and everybody wants to hear her sing, right, And so
I think that they found a natural way, which is
to make it like her little like anxiety quirk right
that she does. She kinda sing to herself if she's
feeling nervous, you know, and she doesn't have to, you know,

(03:38):
be like a belter or sing a big song and
everybody be like, wow, what a voice, you know, because
it's like a nervous tech that she kind of does.
And I thought it was so smart of the show.
And I remember that in the pilot and I remember
being excited being like, oh my gosh, I'm gonna get
to hear zoetational sing on set, you know, and you know,
and she did it in this perfect way that fit
the character. But also I like satisfied the fans who

(04:02):
wanted to hear Zoe sing. So it was super smart,
really delicate, really nuanced how they kind of wove that
in character wise, So I think that's the I mean,
that's how I felt about it. I think that was
probably their thinking of, like, how do we use this
natural talent and what everyone's gonna be like hoping happens,

(04:22):
and not just make it nonexistent, but she can't be
like some phenomenal singer like Zoe is. How do we
make it work? And I think they did it perfectly.
No surprise, New Girl, all right? Next question from Monica G.
Hannah and Lamarn. I am loving this podcast. CEC and
Winston have been my favorite part of New Girl from
the beginning. Oh or I guess like the second episode,

(04:45):
would you guys ever considering doing a spinoff series like
Winston's a cop, CEC as a modeling agency and sometimes
they self crimes together using the models as undercover agents.
This is the pitch. I like this pitch. Lol, It's
a stretch, but I love the two of you back
on my screen. Well, Monica, I think this is going

(05:05):
to have to do watching Lamourn and I do a
podcast together. I think we solve kind of like small
New Girl crimes, tiny mysteries, you know, like the Bear,
and you know, we investigate like cops and we look
cutely medals. I don't think we would do a spinoff

(05:26):
series together, but I do feel like Lom Mourn and I,
with our friendship that goes back one billion years now,
we've basically never not worked together. We've always found a
way to work together. And the reason why that is
so intentional is we'll always be friends forever till we're

(05:47):
you know, two hundred years old. But you know, life
is busy, right, Life is busy. And the way these jobs,
these acting jobs work is they're really long hours and
they take you different places, and so then when you're
trying to see your friends when you work in this industry,
it often is quite difficult because you're you know, working
crazy hours and you're far away from each other, and

(06:09):
you get moved around and so you see each other
not so often, But if you can find a way
to work together, then you get to hang out with
your friend all the time. And that really was the
like one of the reasons we really wanted to do
this podcast because we're like, we miss each other, but
if we could figure out how to hang out every week,
then we get to see each other. You know, Laura

(06:32):
and I are used to sharing a trailer for a decade.
We're used to seeing each other every day, and you know,
chatting about nothing and being really honest with each other
and very transparent about things. And so we had to
figure out a way, and this podcast was that we
get to hang out every week. We get to tell

(06:53):
the truth, we get to make each other laugh, we
get to connect with fans, which is a passion for
both of us. So yeah, I feel like this is
the spinoff. Girl, You're here. We're doing it all right.
Celia dee Is sent in a letter. It says, Hey, Hannah,
my sister and I were talking about Schmidt the other day,
as you do. She insisted that Schmidt had to go

(07:16):
back to Elizabeth for two reasons. First, he had to
resolve his own issues around his internalized fat phobia and
fear of not being good enough, and second, so he
could be a better man for CEC. I think of
a guy cheats once, he's bound to do it again.
But I still kind of root for Cec and Schmid.
So confusing. What do you think did Elizabeth make Schmidt
a better man for Cec? Or did he just hurt

(07:38):
two wonderful women by acting like a child. I will
say this, look for the show, for the story wonderful,
of course, makes perfect sense. Elizabeth gave him some growth
he needed the growth. Elizabeth is wonderful and smart and
honest and strong and cool and gorgeous and sexy and

(07:58):
all the things. But in real life as a human,
not in a fictional show where you have to like
build drama and story points. No, I am not here
for anybody to learn on anybody by hurting them. So
I think he just heard two wonderful women by acting
like a child. Okay, I'm not here for it. I'm

(08:20):
not gonna support it. I don't think that it's like
something that we should. You know, I watch Love Island.
Everybody he knows me, knows that I watched Love Island.
I love it so much that show. Anybody who's been
on love Island. I am a fan. The thing that
makes me the craziest is the we need a test.

(08:43):
We need a test, just say I'm not one hundred
percent sure on this relationship I've got going on. I
think I still need to explore dating other people. That's
being a mature human and saying what you really mean.
But to say I need to go and make out,
sleep with, get emotionally invested whatever it is with someone

(09:06):
else so I can see if this is real? Is
some oh huh okay? So I love that. By the way,
you guys are like dissecting and analyzing Schmidt, I do
love that. I love that this show is not just
like oh what a laugh, is also like, let's look
at relationships. So look at this man's growth. Was he justified?

(09:26):
Did this make sense? What was this really about? I
love that That's what this whole podcast is about, Like
what's really going on? Let's dig into these characters. Next,
we have Anya Anya La Morning Hanna. I have a
question our coach in CC remembering a different makeout than
the rest of us in this sister's episode, because, as

(09:46):
you've said it, it wasn't that good. Lol. Was that
scene written because you guys had such an awkward time.
And does the fact that he see Coach become friends
prove you can be friends with your ex? Does one
day count as an ex? I'm gonna count it anyway.
Thanks for the pod. It's been a constant comfort on
my long drives to work. Well. Thanks Anya. So funny
you say that, because I have thought a lot about it,

(10:10):
and I think that that was written because that was
the truth of what happened between Damon and I. Damon
and I don't have chemistry like that. We have best
friend chemistry, chemistry where super close friends tell you know
now today. We don't have chemistry like that, and so
it was so awkward to shoot. It was a total disaster.

(10:31):
We were laughing too hard. He really did hurt my tooth.
And so, just in New Girl fashion, they write things
into the show I had forgotten that we then had
to recreate as characters the things that had happened in
real life. So funny. I don't think that this proves

(10:51):
that you can be friends with an ex, because I
don't think that CC and Coach are exes, right, They're not.
They're just like two people that kind of like walked
along and then like bumped each other's faces and then
like kept moving. So no, I do think that Coach
though it seems like had some real feelings, like he
was into it, but she was never into it, and

(11:15):
they never dated and they never had that kind of connection.
So I think they were always friends, absolutely, always friends,
and then tried something that ended in like literal injury,
and that was that. So I think they just kind
of realized exactly what they were. I'm glad that you're
listening to this on long drives to work. It's funny

(11:35):
to from where I lived to where I would shoot
up at Fox. I did New Girl there, also did
a show called Not Dead Yet on the same lot
and sometimes on the same New Girl stages, so that
was a trip. But I would have long drives to work,
and I would put on my favorite podcasts too, and
so it's so nice to know that that, you know,
we're doing that for other people to keep them company

(11:55):
on their drives. That's cool, all right. Next episode, Ellie,
she says, Hey, I'm sorry to write about something that

(12:15):
annoys me. Ooh, don't apologize for that. That's my favorite thing.
I want to know. I want to know what annoys you.
That's the best. We're not just here for the compliments.
Love this already, but it's bothered me for years and
I need to let it out. Let's go, Ellie. Why
does New Girl introduce siblings once and then never again.
Whenston's sisters in one episode and you never hear from

(12:36):
her again, then we get two episodes with Justice sister
and then she's tossed out like yesterday's garbage. My three siblings,
though we live all over, are a really important influence
of my life, and it just seems so strange to
never get a call or even a mentioner on the holidays.
I realize it's not your department, but was what's going
on with that? Thanks? Ellie? Okay, here's my thought on it,

(12:57):
because I thought about it too when I rewatched The Sisters,
I was like, I feel like the core of New
Girl and I appreciate this so much, is that it's
about that like stage age era of your life where
my allergies gonna make me crazy. I was talking about
this last week allergies in LA. I feel like this

(13:20):
whole show was created about this time in your life
where your friends are your chosen family, you know, like
you see that brotherhood between the boys. You see the
sisterhood between Ceci and Jess, and you see that kind
of family dynamic with all of them, and I think
that that was just always like the core of the storytelling,
the core of the heart of this, like the show,

(13:42):
was how they relied on each other as chosen family.
They weren't living with their brother and sister anymore, where
that's who you called, you called this you know this
chosen brother, this chosen sister. But you're also still in
that age where like you miss your mom and dad,
like you become like a little kid a bit, which

(14:04):
is why I think you do see some of the
parental stuff, not a ton, but like a bit more
than we ever hear of all the siblings again and again.
I like that they're referenced. I like that you kind
of get a little more backstory on these characters, like
who their siblings were, and then you can kind of
get a little information of probably what their childhood was like.
But they didn't want it to be the focus. I

(14:26):
feel like this is just about chosen family, that moment
in your life where you've moved out of your parents' home,
away from your siblings, but you're not married, you don't
have kids yet, and you've got roommates and they become
the people you rely on. And I think that was
always just what the story was always about. That's what
New Girl is, and so they always had to stay

(14:48):
true to that. That's my theory, just a theory, but
that's my theory on that. Thanks Ellie. That's a great question,
thought provoking question and very valid. All right, that is
the show. So go to our website, The mess around
