(03:03):
those classic hits the Daily Grubro Podcast. What's up, everybody.
I'm David Grubb and welcome to Week three of Classic
Hits on the MLB Bro Show podcast The Mixtape. This week,
I'm highlighting a pair of pioneers who broke barriers in

(03:24):
the major leagues. The story of baseball's integration didn't end
with Jackie Robinson breaking the color barry with the Brooklyn
Dodgers in nineteen forty seven. It would take a full
twelve years for every team to sign its first black player,
and some owners fought against the inclusion of black athletes
for as long as possible. In nineteen fifty four, two
franchises would take the modest step forward. The Saint Louis

(03:44):
Cardinals were starting to strike when Robinson joined. The Dodgers welcomed,
if that's the right word here, welcomed rookie Tom Alston
as their first black player. Alston made his debut against
the rival Chicago Cubs, going over four In parts of
four seasons of Saint Louis, Austin appeared in fewer than
one hundred games, but he paved the way for Bob Gibson,
Kurt Flood, Lou Brock, and other black players who would
become the foundation of championship teams in Saint Louis for

(04:06):
decades to come. Meanwhile, a few hours to the east
and other Kurt was making his debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Former Kansas City Monarchs second baseman Kurt Roberts had also
been signed by branch Rickey, the man who brought Jackie
Robinson to the Dodgers. Roberts smacked a triple and a
double in his first game, with his three bagger coming
off of Hall of Famer Robin Roberts. But after earning

(04:28):
the job as Pittsburgh's starting second baseman and a playing
in one hundred and thirty four games as a rookie,
Roberts only appeared in thirty seven games over the next
two seasons before eventually losing his job at future Hall
of Famer build basle Roski. However, his impact for the
Pirates was huge off the field, Roberts became a mentor
to a young Roberto Clemente, helping him navigate the hostel

(04:49):
environment and deal with the abuse that he experienced. It
doesn't matter that neither Alston or Roberts made an All
Star team, won a World Series, or even had lasting careers. Baseball,
just like the rest of life, is fiddle talented people
who just didn't make it. What does matter is that
those men were willing and able to be first. And
it's never easy to be the first. And as long
as folks continue to tell their stories, the legacies of

(05:11):
Tom Austin and Kurt Roberts will live. On mbro dot
com is definitely part of making that happen. That's my time.
I'm David Grubb and this has been classic hits on
the MLB bro podcast the Mixtape. Now back to the mix.
This is the week each year that we stopped for

(05:34):
a day to remember the legacy of a man that
changed the legacy of sports in America. It's your void,
Mark Gray, and I'm going deep for the mixtape, Going
Deep with og Mark Gray. Jackie Roosevelt Robinson came to
play baseball at the professional major league level on April fifteenth,

(05:55):
nineteen forty two, and in that moment, it not only
changes the complexion of the game of baseball, it changed
the complexion of America in general. Between the white lines.
There were no MLB Bros back in the day, and
when Robinson came through, if he didn't play at a

(06:15):
high level, there probably would be none today. Let's be
clear about something here. Ever, since Jackie Robinson broke major
League Baseball color the barrier, baseball has been a totally
different game. It's been a more crowd pleasing, exciting brand
of baseball. And now with the changes in the current game,

(06:36):
you're gonna see a lot more of the athleticism that
we saw, which is what made Jackie so great. But
in a bigger picture, from a social standpoint, you gotta
look at the layers that Jackie Robinson affected the world
of sports, and not only baseball. Think about it, how
many mainstream baseball beat writers would they have been headed

(07:00):
not for guys like he and Larry Doby coming into
major League baseball and validating that they needed to have
a place to be covered. Secondarily to historic impact away
from civil rights and what they did and critical moments
to bring texture to the game. But as the game
prepares to stop once again this year and all the

(07:23):
players will wear it number forty two on that day,
we still must be reminded that there is still work
to be done. Well, let's just talk for a second
about ownership and what will somebody cross that hallowed line
into a place of power. And it's one of the
things that still fuels Dave Stewart, Reggie Jackson and one

(07:44):
of the reasons you have to wonder who's going to
be the next Derek Jeter to get his bite of
that app It's your boy, Mark Gray and I'm going
tep for the mixtape. It's the Black's Report, the Black

(08:06):
It's the Black's Report, the Black Ace Report. What's up, everybody?
This is just a Petrilli with the black As Report
on the MLB Bro Show podcast Mixcape. Here's where you
get the latest on the melonated Mount Marauders who are
shoving with precision and popping out all across the big leagues.
So let's check the report. The Stro Show continues to

(08:28):
stay solid for the Cubs as he had another great
performance against the Mariners. He pitched six innings, allowed five hits,
and punching out six. He's allowed two combined runs in
his first three starts and has a one point zero
zero ERA to start his campaign, which is the ninth
best ERA of all starting pitchers in the league. After
getting thumbed for five runs and five innings in his

(08:48):
first start, Washington Nationals ace Josia Gray has only allowed
three runs at his last eleven point two innings pitched.
He's winless to start the year, as he suffered tough
one did nothing end, two to nothing losses and back
to back starts. After walking thirteen battles in his first
two starts, black Jack Flaherty managed to only walk one
over five point one innings pitch while striking out six

(09:10):
and allowing one run against the Rockies on April twelve.
He's pitched a total of fifteen point one innings to
start the year, allowing only three runs with a sizzling
one point seven six ERA. A Hunter Green pitch six innings,
allowing three runs and striking out ten against the Brays,
and he left the game with the score tied three
to three. Tash Bradley had a terrific twenty twenty three

(09:31):
debut for the Rays, pitching for five innings, allowing three
runs and striking out eight. That's a black age report
for this week. This is JP the rook Now back
to the mix. Wargle fans are talking there to talk

Hall of Famer Frank Thomas. While fans Warrior Go Frank

All is known for being a big hitter. Frank had
over twenty four hundred career hits, five hundred and twenty
one career home runs in the stellar three or one
bat an average, five Wall Star appearances, two time al MVP,
with four Silver Slugger Awards. After availing the statue, Thomas said,
I'm honored to see a statue had really brought a

and it looks exactly like me from college and not
the pro. Definitely a suite icing on the cake with
a statue at his all of matin a big personality

We do this every day the best to bless this
that as the blue loss to be working. So the

(13:02):

flow from the plan. The wicked throws. That's sick the pros.
This is how we do like face do this every day.

(13:58):
The best, the blessed, the ball war wins ops A plus.
Baseball is a game of stats. I'm Sebastian Ball and

(14:18):
I'm the numbers Mann. Jordan Skywalker aka j Walker was
one of the most touted prospects coming into the twenty
twenty three season, and this mb BRO has translated his
elite offensive ability into the majors. Walker is capable of
being a superstar sin was for many years to come.
Walker has come straight up from the Cardinals double A

(14:38):
system and displayed I popping eggs and philosophy numbers. As
of Tuesday, April eleven, already reaching a maximum egs of
volscity of one hundred and thirteen point nine moss power,
which is good for the ninety eight percentile in baseball
so far this season this period, with a hard hit
rate of fifty six point seven percent, is showing early
bro bomber power. His expected batting average is three forty

(14:59):
nine so far, which is also good for the nineteenth percent.
How is expected weighted on base average on contacted balls
is for fifty nine. However, is totally expected weighted on
base average, He's three eighty nine, meaning that when he
puts the ball in play is almost always elite contact. However,
his low walk rate of two point four percent could
be hindering his productions lately, but he did hit in
a rookie record tenth straight games to open the season. Defensively,

(15:22):
Walker was forced to change positions from third base to
right field due to Nolan Aeronauto filling that spot on
the roster. With Walker's elite sprit speed in the eighty
six percent tile and its display of arm strength, it
should not be long until he's more than capable of
fielding the position. Walker came into the season as the
favorite to win ANIL Rookie of the Year and is
it possible that he's already won the award in April.

(15:44):
The numbers will tell and that's it. Numbers never lie.
So until the next episode. This is Sebastian Ball, the
numbers Man, bringing you the metrics on the MLB Bros.
He's the numbers man MLB brow Coms Analytical Winz Sebastian Ball,

(16:07):
Young Krit. He had to tell you about the bro Bombers.
He had to tell you about mo drama. What's up everybody?
This is Young Krit and this is my weekly countdown
of the biggest plays made by MLB bros over the
past seven days. This week come again. At number five,
we have veteran bro Andrew mccushion, who received his flowers
for the standing ovation in his first game in Pittsburgh,

(16:27):
who was twenty seventeen. He could let the two hits
in the game as well. Up next to number four,
which in Carlos Staton, who was found his groove and
has his mojo back. He picked up five hits in
the weekend series against the Ohs and blasted another harm run.
The other half of the powerful duel has come alive.
To help lead the Yankees on another run. Sitting in
a three spot. We've got Nat shortstop tg Arabums who

(16:48):
stepped to the plate on Friday against the Rockies, wrecked
up three hits and let out two triples in the
process to go along with through RBI and never two.
This week you have Karlin's out for the Jordan Walker
who became the second compared in MLB history start their
career with the ten plus game hitting Street. The Cardinals
may have found their brow in the field. To compliment
the growing them Mount and Jack thirty and finally number

(17:10):
one or Chris Colmdown, we have young bro sne Geartt
who had himself to day on Saturday against the Rockets,
collecting four hits including a home run, a double, and
five arbat. Here's a part of our dynamic duel in
the Nation's Capital that include Abrams as well. And that's
it until next week. I'm me on Chris and this
has been Chris Colmdown on the MLB Bro Show podcast mixtape.

(17:32):
Now back to the mix. It's the gamblers shoe, It's
the Gambler's voice. This week, Daddy Daddy, please tell us
that story about the great manager Jesty Baker and how

(17:54):
he invented the high five. Can you handle the facts?
Emilb bro As facts validated by stats. I won't sell you,
no job, no cat, no lie. Dusty Baker invented the
high five. He and Glenn Burke on an historical day.

(18:14):
That high gripped hands and changed the game. It was
nineteen seventy seven when the Dodgers played the Strolls, back
when baseball was happy. Ron Safe, Steve Garvey and Reggie
Smith had thirty blasts. Dusty Baker needed one more to
join that exclusive class. Four players on one team accomplished

(18:40):
the feat for the first time in baseball history. Dusty
flew around the basis, and he was so hyped that
when he reached home plate he almost flew out of
his spikes. Dusty tried to go low, but Burke wanted
it high, so Dusty met him up top for the
first high five. The simple gesture became a symbol of

(19:03):
prime but decades to come for sports worldwide. So don't
let ignorance sloop down like a vulture. Just another way
to celebrate the influence Blacks have had on baseball culture.
By my five backs, the breakthrough of MLB Bro Rookie

(19:28):
Jordan Walker isn't just about Jordan Walker. It isn't just
about the Saint Louis Cardinals. It isn't about his twelve
games of his major league career. Ways had at least
one hit in each of those games. It's bigger than that.

(19:49):
Jordan Walker is a movement. It wasn't long ago that
Major League Baseball lost players like Jordan Walker to the NFL.
He's six f six, two hundred and fifty pounds and
twenty years old. But Jordan Walker is showing other athletes
that major League Baseball is an option and you can

(20:11):
play it and drive in a game such as baseball.
Our MLB bro analysts La Troy Hawkins compared them to
Dave Winfield, and it's a great comparison. Dave Winfield was
drafted by four professional leagues, the ABA, the NBA, the NFL,

(20:33):
and Major League Baseball and boarded. Dave Winfield picked correctly.
We went on to a twenty year Hall of Fame
Baseball career. Don't be full, Jordan Walker is a movement.
I'm robbed and that's my brand. I do so damn

(21:25):
I'm on the baseline. If you want to see me.
You better try FaceTime. I'm on my tim brains time

I got the willing ability. Plus my pops caught me

(21:46):
the first home. But all I'm thinking about is trying
to get the first. Y'all. We got no runs to
hits and we struggling. Coach talking about don't run, keep ugging,
but my hand, damn, I'm gonta first, y'all. The catching
never had a chance to eaven the ball. Now I'm
bought the third scrambling rambling, I slotted the whole mic.
I'm on my bendy hambleton, so damn my back after blake,

(22:08):

can read. That's what I call my shaking back doubles.
And the gap bombs to the lake. The banks at

the savagery of the boys. Statt de boys make out Automattic.
