What's up, everybody, I'm David Grub and welcome to another
edition of classic hits here on them Bro Show Podcast
The Mixtape. This week we're taking a look at a
former MLB broad who made a name for himself north of.

Speaker 6 (03:06):
The border and across the ocean. Warren Cromarty was born
with baseball in his blood.

Speaker 8 (03:11):
His father, Leeward, was a multi sports star who led
Florida A and M to the Black Football National Championship
in nineteen fifty and who also spent some time with
the Cincinnati Slash Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro Leagues. Warren
went on to be a standout himself at Jackson High
in Miami, Florida, before going on to put up big
numbers at Miami Dade College that got the attention of

(03:31):
the Montreal Expos, who drafted Commarty in the first round
of the nineteen seventy three secondary draft. In his first
season of pro baseball, he batted three thirty five and
thirteen home runs, sixty one armyI.

Speaker 6 (03:42):
And thirty stolen bases.

Speaker 8 (03:44):
By nineteen seventy seven, Commarty was the starting left fielder
with the Expos, joining Ellis Valentine and Andre Dawson to
comprise a three headed monster of young black.

Speaker 6 (03:53):
Talent in the Montreal outfield.

Speaker 8 (03:55):
In nineteen seventy eight, the trio led their positions in
outfield assists, with Commarti leading the Expos with the two
ninety seven batting average, and in nineteen seventy nine he
set a career high scoring eighty four runs as Montreal
won ninety five games.

Speaker 6 (04:08):
Always a steady.

Speaker 8 (04:09):
Hitter, Commarti made the shift to first base as the
Expos continued to improve. They finally reached the playoffs following
the strike shortened nineteen eighty two season.

Speaker 6 (04:17):
As w C.

Speaker 8 (04:18):
Batt at three twenty eight with three home runs, eighteen
RBI and twenty four runs scored. Montreal finished on the
cusp of reaching the World Series, falling to the.

Speaker 6 (04:26):
Dodgers in the NLCS.

Speaker 8 (04:28):
That was the end of the good times though for Commarti,
as he became a part time player. The following year,
at thirty years old, Camarty was without a job and
without a lot of interest across the major leagues, so
he traveled overseas and signed with the Yama Yurik Giants
of Nippon Professional Baseball, becoming the first American player in
his prime to go to Japan. Warren Commarty was playing

(04:49):
for the biggest brand Japanese baseball and being managed by
Sadaharu Oh, the biggest name in.

Speaker 6 (04:54):
The history of Japanese baseball.

Speaker 8 (04:57):
O took Carmarty under his wing, fixed his swing, and
ended up as a three time All Star, an MVP,
and a champion. He had his best overall season in
nineteen eighty nine, where he batted three seventy eight with
fifteen home runs at seventy eight RBI, taking MVP of
the Central League. He was able to come back to
the US for his swan song signing with the Kansas

(05:17):
City Royals in nineteen ninety one and appearing in sixty
nine games while putting up a three thirteen average with
twenty RBI over.

Speaker 6 (05:25):
Ten Major League seasons, warn Comarty hit.

Speaker 8 (05:27):
Two eighty or better five times, finishing with a career
too eighty one average. In seven seasons in Japan, he
posted a three to twenty one average with one hundred
and seventy one homers.

Speaker 6 (05:36):
In five hundred and fifty eight RBI.

Speaker 8 (05:38):
Coramarti paved the way for players like Cecil Fielder, who
also used Japan to either extend their careers or get
back into the bigs. He's another pioneer who helped connect
American and Japanese baseball in the modern era.

Speaker 6 (05:50):
And he's this week's classic hit. That's my time. I'm
David Grubb and now back to the.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Mix, going Deep with og Mark Ray.

Speaker 9 (06:07):
First, there was the gut punch of the A's apparently
going to Las Vegas. Now there's the heartache of losing
truly one of their own. It's your boy, the mlbog
Mark Gray, and I'm going deep for the mixtape. Vider
blues passing was more than just a baseball legend. Passing away.

(06:28):
It was more of an icon of Bay Areas social
life for those of us who are now officially gen xers,
you know, the next generation of the Baby boomers. But
for those of us who were young baseball fans, particularly
those of us around the way from the Wood, those

(06:49):
of us who didn't grow up on manicured lawns. We
grew up in places where.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
Hottholes were in ours.

Speaker 9 (06:57):
Vider Blue, What's that Dude? Were always the coolest team going,
even on black and white TV, because they had the
hog stirrup socks, the white shoes, and the two flies brothers.
On the West coast, Ever, with all due respect to
Willie Recovery and Willie Mays, there was nothing like a
game on Saturday afternoon baseball if you were on the

(07:19):
East side of the country that features potentially Reggie Jackson
and Vida Blue. Vita Blue had electric stuff, the stuff
that you just don't see anymore. He was a left
handed flame thrower who had nasty offspeed stuff that had
more dance moves than the Jackson five. He was a

(07:40):
clutch performer, but the body of work is often dwarfed
by several mistakes. By all accounts, if Vida Blue hadn't
had personal issues, he would have been a Hall of Famer.
But those personal indiscretions don't make up for the fact
that he was a great man, a pillar of his community,

(08:03):
and a guy that will truly be matched by the
Blue Gone too soon as seventy three, but a legend
that was bigger than just Major league bigs. It's your boy,
Mark Gray, the mlbog and I'm going D for the mixtape.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Going D with Og Mark Ray.

Speaker 7 (08:27):
It's the black As Report, the Black As Report. It's
the black As Report, the Black As Report.

Speaker 5 (08:39):
What's up, everybody?

Speaker 10 (08:40):
This is Justin Patrulli with the Black Age Report on
the MLB Bro Show podcast mixtape. Here's where you get
the latest on the melanated Mault Marauders who are shoving
with precision and popping out all across the big leagues.
So let's check the report. After giving up eight runs
and three and the third innings against the Dodgers, Taywan Walker.

Speaker 5 (08:57):
Was able to bounce back in a big way.

Speaker 10 (09:00):
He picked up his third win of the season on
May seventh, hopefully leave the Phillies to a sixty to
one victory over the Red Sox. He managed to go
six innings, allowing three hits, one run and six strikeouts.
Dat for Borns managed to lower his ERA almost a
full point from six point nine to one to five
point nine to seven. Josiah Gray managed to go one
to one during the Nationals West Coast trip on make
Fit in May tenth. He pitched a comby twelve innings,

(09:22):
giving up five total runs. Grayzyra is now at two
point nine to six as he's one of only eleven
starting pitchers in the National League to have an.

Speaker 5 (09:29):
ERA below three.

Speaker 10 (09:31):
It was a tough break for Marcus Stroman as he
picked up his third loss on May eighth. Pastrochio had
a solid outing, pitching six innings and giving up two
runs on four hits. The Cub's offense just wasn't there
that game, as they only managed to not get one batter.
After winning his first two starts, and even with a
stellar two point two eight eer, Stroman is winless in
his last six starts. Hunter Green is still looking for

(09:54):
his first win of the season after picking up losses
in his last two starts. Still, he has a very
respect ERA three point sixty nine and that's only given
up more than three runs once that's the black As
report for this week.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
This is JP the rook now back to the mix.

Speaker 11 (10:11):
Of New York Yankees have missed a big start and
Aaron Judge, who have just made his turn back to
the line up. While the Yankees are sitting at the
bottom of that tough Al East Division. As you've seen
in the series versus the Oakland A's, Aaron just marks
the confidence within the group when he's in rotation. Without
Aaron Judge, the Yankees were five to five in the
last ten games. The Yankees had twenty one team runs

(10:33):
in the last two games, while Judge had three of
the runs himself with three hits in two RBI. The
Yankees have dealt with many injuries from their starts, who
they have spent Max dollars on. Aaron Judge was stoked
following the sweep of the A's after taking care of business.
Hopefully the team is ready for the leader of the
division at Tampa Bay Rays. It's gonna be a tough
four game series in New York. The Rains got the

(10:53):
better of the two last week. The Yankees are nearly
at four straight. So let's see if the Yankees can
start the ride back into the race we're judged back
in the series against Tampa will be a great start
trying to cut into that huge deficit in the Al East.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
That's said at nine games.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
As a maintenant of MLB BRO show you up podcasts.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
Yeah the mixtape, get it on Apple podcast, I R or.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
Wherever you get.

Speaker 3 (11:24):

that's my A like a melanated king. So Baby gets
your sladder up right and they'll be broke. Show HiT's
never fading, banging, amazing, blazing. The cages take it to
the ball pass back to the field. Average judge had
sixty two bombs for real. No juicing, producing or baseball
collusion snoozing. Continue to bruise like blues music, and they'll

(12:32):
be broad show mixtape. So confusion bager got him shaken
and moving. Now in Houston. When I step up to
the plate, Yah, up in the battest box, diamonds fall
off my waist.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Yah.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
I got that game on padded lock, my MVP Mookie Best,
that's my AA, like a melanated king. So Baby gets
your sladder up right. mL be broke, show hits, never faded, banging, amazing,
be blazing. The cages take it to the ballparks back
to the field. Average judge had sixty two bombs for real.
We don't believe in the lies that soul. We believe

(13:05):
in the minds that mold clutch. It is zip rocking
roll that rocks the soul with exit velocity like a
froats and rope. The height of a foul pole left
the picture licking like a junkie who snore in dope.
But this is landed the whole green grass and post
game can of low deep ball to travel to Daryl
Strawberry blast that never choked. No nope, because when I

(13:27):

Speaker 2 (13:30):
My waist yata.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
I got that game, un pattered lot, my MVP will
be best. That's my a like an ellenated king. So
baby gets just swathing right from La to Boston, soul
brother floss and slamming like Stanton taking so from the Horseman,
fire rings, starting Riots, Kerosene, the Rundown Supreme.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
The bros know what I mean, war Wings OPSLA plus.

Speaker 12 (13:57):
Baseball is a game of stats. I'm Sebastian and I'm
the numbers Mann. Jazz Chisholm Junior was one of the
most electric players in baseball last season when playing at
second base for the Miami Marlins, but even with his
position change, defensively, he has not missed a beat in
being one of the most entertaining players around. Jazz Chism

(14:19):
was moved from second base to centerfield coming into twenty
twenty three due to free agent signings in Miami, and
he has excelled in his new position. As of May ninth,
Jazz has notched three outs above average, which is good
for the ninety fifth percentile in the statistic, while also
having an ultimate zone rating per one hundred and fifty
games of six point six.

Speaker 6 (14:41):
This is of little surprise.

Speaker 12 (14:42):
Ajas has always been one of the most athletic players
in the league. He lands in the ninety second percentile
and sprint spat and his new position allows him to
put his arm on full display, which has him in
the seventy fifth percentile in armstrength. He has reached ninety
three points six miles per hour on his strongest throw
so far in twenty twenty three, while averaging eighty seven

(15:03):
point nine months power on high stakes throws. He has
also managed to reach twenty eight point eight months power
on the ground. Running with the top eight percent of baseball,
Jazz has started the season slower at the plate than
he would have liked. However, his fan grafts wins above
replacement is still at zero point five early in the season,
showing how impactful his elite outfield defense has been paired

(15:25):
with his great base running. Jazz doesn't put up an
elite one thirty nine weighted runs created plus last.

Speaker 4 (15:32):
Season in sixty games, So if he.

Speaker 12 (15:34):
Can combine that hitting prowess with his current defensive ability,
he will be one of the best outfielders in the
entire league. Wow, the numbers will tell and that's it.
Numbers never lie. So until the next episode. This is
Sebastian Ball, the numbers Man, bringing you the metrics on
the mlb Bros.

Speaker 4 (15:53):
Take us in the sweet some well known like the
number Man.

Speaker 8 (15:56):
He's the numbers Man, mlbbro dot COM's analytical whiz, Sebastian Ball.

Speaker 12 (19:05):
He had to tell you.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
About Low Bramber.

Speaker 13 (19:07):
What's up, everybody, This is Young krit and this is
my Woozie countdown of the biggest plays made by MLB
bros over the past seven days. This week, come again.
At number five, we have money Mike Harris, who struggled
a bit this season and he's been dealing with the injury,
but he bounced back in a big way on Sunday
hitting get a game winning double and to win against
the Orioles. Up next to number four, we have late

(19:32):
Night LaMonte Wade, who homed in three straight games last
week and had a total of five hits in that
stretch as well. Sitting in the three spot, we've got
Dodger Starr Mookie Betts who had two three hit games
last week and two on runs.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
One of those home runs was a.

Speaker 13 (19:49):
Game time shot in the bottom of the ninth inning
on Sunday Night Baseball against the Padres. And and number
two this week, Rangers short started Marcus Simmy Gette's leader
charge for a squad. Last week, he had himself for
nine six game hitting streaks with four multi hit games
and finally number one on Chrits countdowns, Josh Bell has

(20:10):
finally started taking up a bit. Last week, he picked
up six hits and six games to go along with
three RBI and that's it until next time.

Speaker 4 (20:18):
I'm Young Krit.

Speaker 13 (20:19):
This has been Chrits countdown on the mb bro Show
podcast Mixtape.

Speaker 5 (20:23):
Now back to the mix.

Speaker 12 (20:29):
MLB bro presented Black and the Day.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
This is another episode of Untold Baseball Team, where we
bring you never heard before stories from MLB bros throughout
the year. Today, second generation baller Gary Matthews Junior joins
us and tells us a story about how one of
his one hundred and eight career homers he hit between

(20:53):
nineteen ninety nine and twenty ten course his former team.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
Hello, what's u FM?

Speaker 14 (21:01):
Gary Matthews Junior here, former second generation Major League Baseball outfielder.

Speaker 6 (21:06):
So.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
I was talking to my guy JR.

Speaker 14 (21:08):
Gamble a couple of weeks ago, and he was asking
me if I might share a story or two with
you guys. I came up with a great story. So
I'm gonna take you guys back to two thousand and one.
I am in my third year in the league. I
am in my second year with my beloved Chicago Cubs,
an organization my father played for, and it was an

(21:29):
absolute honor and literally a.

Speaker 4 (21:32):
Dream come true to play for this organization myself.

Speaker 14 (21:35):
So three quarters of the way through my second season,
in August, I was claimed off of waivers from the
Cubs to the Pittsburgh Pirates. A month later in September,
rolls around, and who are we playing against?

Speaker 4 (21:54):
You guessed it, the Chicago Cubs.

Speaker 14 (21:56):
Chicago Cubs rolled into town, rolled into Pittsburgh, holding on
to some slim playoff hopes, and I think if they
lost one more game, they.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
Would be mathematically eliminated.

Speaker 14 (22:07):
So I find myself late in the game, bottom of
the eighth inning, at the plate, and what do you know,
I end up hitting a go ahead and game winning
home run to mathematically eliminate the team I was playing
for had spent the two previous seasons playing for in

(22:28):
driving in this run, hitting this game winning home run,
I eliminated my team and also eliminated what would have
surely been a full playoff check for however far they
would have went in the playoffs, anywhere from fifty thousand
to close to two hundred thousand.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
If you go all the way and win a World Series.
This might seem like an.

Speaker 14 (22:52):
Insignificant amount of money, but trust me, for a third
year player who was probably making two hundred thousand. That
fifty thousand dollars would have went.

Speaker 4 (23:01):
A long way. So now here's the kicker.

Speaker 14 (23:05):
I'm in the locker room after the game, just hopped
out of the shower and I get a note from
one of the bat boys.

Speaker 4 (23:13):
I opened a note and it's a letter.

Speaker 14 (23:15):
From a quick note from Todd hot Rod Huntley, who
was our starting catcher in Chicago and was behind the
plate and probably called the fastball that I hit out
of the park.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
I can't repeat what this.

Speaker 14 (23:30):
Note said, but it said basically, Junior, you just cost
yourself a lot of playoff share money. To this day,
I've held onto that note. It's framed and on a
wall in my house. Without question, one of my favorite
stories but also one of my favorite pieces of memorabilia.

Speaker 4 (23:51):
So hope you guys enjoyed it. I'll see you guys soon.

Speaker 12 (23:57):
Mlvbro dot com, black and brown, major leagues.

Speaker 5 (24:06):
On rob and that's my brand.

Speaker 4 (24:12):
I'll kill Badu ba Doo.

Speaker 3 (24:16):
He was treading his past week because he got hit
below the belt.

Speaker 5 (24:21):
That wasn't cool.

Speaker 8 (24:23):
That happened on Monday nights, but he bounced.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
Back on Tuesday with three hits.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
I kill Badu is bad.

Speaker 8 (24:34):
He's swinging the bats or the Detroit Tigers man nobody
will forget.

Speaker 6 (24:39):
When he first go into the scene.

Speaker 5 (24:41):
In twenty twenty one on opening Day, the first pitch.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
You ever saw.

Speaker 5 (24:46):
He hit out more home runs.

Speaker 14 (24:49):
He had a great start to his career, stumbled in
twenty twenty two, sent to the minor leagues.

Speaker 5 (24:55):
Now he's back and he's being productive.

Speaker 6 (24:59):
And this is a good thing.

Speaker 5 (25:01):
He's an exciting young player.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
I kill Bado and he has a great name and
so much energy.

Speaker 6 (25:11):
And the Tigers are playing better and he's playing better.

Speaker 4 (25:16):
I love it.

Speaker 8 (25:18):
I kill Vadu's back and that's good for baseball.

Speaker 5 (25:24):
I rob and that's my brand.

Speaker 3 (25:30):

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
