What's Up, Everybody?
Speaker 7 (03:32):
I'm David Grubb, and welcome to another week of classic
hits on the MLB Bro Show podcast.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
The mixtape.
Speaker 7 (03:37):
There are very few stories in baseball like the one
I'm about to tell you. It was a story so
unbelievable that both a movie and a book were made
about the tale of today's subject. Former Detroit Tigers Montreal
expos at Chicago White Sox outfielder Ron the Floor. La
Floor was born in Detroit, Michigan, and his childhood was
a nightmarish mix of poverty, drugs.
Speaker 6 (03:58):
And crime.
Speaker 7 (03:59):
And just twenty two years of age, who since the
five to fifteen years in prison Brohn and Robert, who
served at Michigan's Jackson State Penitentiary. While incarcerated, Laflour decided
to join the baseball league organized for inmates. He had
never played team sports in his life up to that point.
A fellow inmate just happened to know a guy who
knew Billy Martin, then the manager.
Speaker 6 (04:16):
Of the Tigers, and told him to check out this
guy in prison.
Speaker 7 (04:19):
Martin found a way to get the Floor permission for
a full on tryout in Tiger Stadium in.
Speaker 6 (04:23):
June of nineteen seventy three.
Speaker 7 (04:25):
He signed him the next month to a contract that
met his parole conditions, and he joined Detroit's Class A
ball club. He had three point thirty one and forty
five stolen bases in just one hundred and two games
and jumped to Triple A. By nineteen seventy five, Ron
the Floor was in the show and he was the
Tiger starting set of fielder. Detrop was electrified by its
native son and the rookie sensation of the bird Mark
(04:45):
Finrich that year, and in nineteen seventy six, Ohee and
Lafloor made the All Star team in a season where
Ron Lafloor bad at three sixteen with twenty three doubles,
eight triples and fifty eight steals said Tiger's never finished
higher than in fourth place, but it.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
Wasn't because of the Floor.
Speaker 7 (05:00):
Six seasons in Detroity, Batnett two ninety seven scored five
hundred and thirty two runs and stole two hundred and
ninety four bases. In nineteen seventy eight, he led the
American League in both run scored and steals.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
But the seventies ended, and so did his run with
the Tigers.
Speaker 7 (05:13):
He was traded to Montreal in nineteen eighty and became
the first player in Major League history to lead both
leagues in stolen bases after racking up a career high
in ninety seven as the expost.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
Finished in second place.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
He would play.
Speaker 7 (05:25):
Two more, largely into distinct seasons with the White Sox
before his retirement.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
But that was at the end of the story.
Speaker 7 (05:31):
On the way out the door, Lafloor revealed that he
was actually four years older than anyone had ever thought.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
Life has been in knicks bag to run on the
floor ever since.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
But his story is one.
Speaker 7 (05:40):
Of survival and opportunity, and when he got his, he
took full advantage.
Speaker 6 (05:45):
I'm David Grubb. This has been classic hits. He got
back to the mix.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Indeed with og a great Major.
Speaker 8 (06:01):
League Baseball apparently against it better than the foes from
back in the day who didn't want to let a
certain group of people know that they were no longer slaves.
It's a boy, Mark Gray, the MLBOG. I'm going deep
for the mixtape. In eighteen sixty three, slavery in America
was abolished by the Emancipated Proclamation. However, for nearly two
(06:24):
years afterwards, a group of slaves west of the Mississippi
never knew that they were indeed free. Once they found
out the name Juneteenth was born. Now Major League Baseball
is recognizing it throughout the game with a celebration that
ranks right up there with Jackie Robinson's birthday. The June
(06:47):
teenth celebration in Washington, DC was more than just lip
service to one of the wrongs of this nation's checker pass.
The organization you have to give credit for because they
allow a cultural experience to bring racists together. Imagine that
people at the ballpark enjoying the game. It kind of
(07:09):
takes you back to a different time historically, when believe
it or not, white folks did travel to Negro League
games to watch a different brand of baseball. Similarly, what's
happening today with the changes in the game that have
sped it up and the athleticism that many African American
players and bring it back to the game. It's creating
(07:30):
a climate where diversity seems to be on the haraze.
The diversity definitely was in the ballpark on Monday when
the Nationals lost to the Saint Louis Cardinals, but there
was a spirit in the air where you had inquisitive
white minds who were looking to learn more about the
(07:54):
cultural history of Black Americans, and they were doing it
through the prism of baseball. When prejudice strikes out, everybody
can get in and enjoy it. It's your boy, Mark
Great the mlbog and I'm going deep for the mixed team.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
It's the black As Report, the Black A Report. It's
the Black As Report, the Black As Report.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
What's up, everybody?
Speaker 9 (08:29):
This is justin Patrilly with the Black Ace Report on
the MLB Bro Show podcast mixtape. Here's where you get
the latest on the Melany in Mount Marauders course, shuggling
with precision and popping out all across the big leagues.
So let's check the report. It's seven from Heaven for
Marcus Stroman. The strow Show has won a seventh consecutive
game on June twentieth against the Pirates, pitching seven score
(08:50):
listenings and only allowing five hits in one walk. His
era's down to two point two eight, which is the
best in the NL and third best in all the MLB.
If he wasn't the NLI Young for Under before, he
surely is now. Timewe Walker continues to fly high as
he picked up his third consecutive win against the A's
on June eighteenth, going eight innings, allowing seven hits, one
(09:10):
run and striking out eight. He's now seven to three
and has an ERA of four point three to one.
He looks to pick up his fourth win in a
row on Friday, June twenty three against their arch rivals
in the New York Mets. It was a battle between
two bros on June nineteenth, as Josiah Gray and Jack
Flarity faced off against one another in DC. Each Broke
gave up six runs, but in the end Flarity won
(09:32):
this battle as he went six and a third innings
picking up the win, and Gray only going five innings
as he was the hand of the loss. It was
bad news for Guardians fans this past week as Tristan
McKenzie's back on the injured list, this time with a
spring UCL. He was placed on the fifteen day I out,
but McKenzie told reporters that he won't throw for about
a month and he could be out between four to
six weeks, maybe longer. That's the black Ae report for
(09:55):
this week. This is JP the Brook now back to
the mix.
Speaker 10 (10:03):
Marcus Struman has been serving to me and strikeout dish.
After the seventh shutout and in the four old gooseg
win over the Pittsburgh Pirate. Struman has a two to
twenty eight LRA, which is the lowest in the National League.
He has a nine to four record winning pitch currently
on the seven game high Street the Chicago Cubs, the
currently third in the NL Central Division.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Strumman is playing like a.
Speaker 10 (10:21):
Top three pitcher in the league and it's yet to receive.
Speaker 6 (10:23):
A contracting session.
Speaker 10 (10:24):
He can opt out of his contract next year and
even continues to dominate the way he has, he'll be
won the highest paid pitchers in the league.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
The numbers he's.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Putting up his top five and.
Speaker 10 (10:33):
Every statistical category and putting himself in that elite class.
He has an upward trend the career so far, so
he may be at that point where he is a
lead pitcher. So you have some key pieces to build
around Chicago. Pay him or somebody else will, as we'll
be serving it up all season long right here on
Him and Bros. Podcast, Oval Cook, Stay Hugged, Evan Deli, Venoms.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Man by Jodge or wings obvious a plus.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Baseball is a game of stats. I'm se basketball and
I'm the numbers man.
Speaker 12 (13:37):
Some well known.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Josh Naylor has gone under the radar this season as
one of the better first basemen in baseball. Since leaving
San Diego in twenty twenty, Naylor has only progressed season
by season, showing very promising signs of being a cornerstone
in Cleveland in twenty twenty two. It may not be
obvious yet, but Naylor has taken another leap in twenty
twenty three. Last season, Naylor put up rear bests across
(14:00):
the board. He notched a weighted runs created plus of
one point seventeen and twenty twenty two, a jump from
just the ninety he had the previous season.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
His expected weighted.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
On base average a point three two seven was also
a large improvement from the point three to one point
one he had in twenty twenty one, and he also
put up three outs of of average in the field
in seven hundred and forty eight innings. This led to
a fangrass War total of one point seven, a breakout.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
Year for him.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
As of June twenty twenty twenty three, Naylor has a
weighted runs created plus of one to ten, which may
seem like a slight decline. However, his expected weighted on
base average took a huge jump to point three to
sixty three this year, which ranks eighth among all first
base in the baseball If his luck manages to turn
towards where his expected stats show he should be, it
(14:47):
will become a real powerhouse in Cleveland, so don't be
surprised if you see him begin a real hot streak soon.
Naylor has also improved his glove once again, having four
out of average in three hundred and sixty seven point one,
which is less than half the innings he played last year,
which leads him to be just third among first basement
and the statistic Naylor may only have a Fancraft fourth
(15:10):
of zero point eight, so far in the season. However,
once his results begin to emulate his expected stats, that
number will quickly shoot up. The Guardians are only two
games out of first place in a wide open Ale
Central race, and with Naylor's look potentially turning towards where
it should be and the return of Tristan mckenz each
other rotation, that Jamaican duo have a real shot at
(15:31):
pushing the Guardians step back to back Ale Central titles.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
And that's it.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
Numbers never lie so until the next episode. This is
Sebastia in Ball the numbers Man, bringing you the metrics
on the MLB Bros.

Speaker 13 (16:06):
Number five with Cardin's outfit or Jordan Walker, who has
been locked in since his call up at the beginning
of the month. Last week, in six games, he had
eight hits, two home runs, and four RBI up next
to number four britz offforter Will Vinson continues to make
things happen. On Saturday, he had three hits with a
triple and two RBI and a ten to three win
(16:28):
over the Houston Astros. Sitting in the three spot. We've
got Giants first basement late night LaMonte Wade who went
off against the Daughters on Saturday, breaking in three hits
with the home run and for RBI and number two
this week, old slugger Aaron Hicks continues to do damage
for his new team. Last week he could lect the
(16:50):
eight hits or three devils and a harm run finally
number one on Chris Countdown. Don't look now, but it
looks like money. Mike Harris is back because he is
cooked after the Busmas start. Last week, he played in
seven games, had fifteen hits with three ar runs and
non RBI. Most importantly, though, that glove and their arm
(17:11):
in center field as still as good as it gets.
