Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello Puzzlers, and welcome to the Puzzler Weekend, where we
bring you some of our favorite episodes from the vaults
for your weekend listening. Today's episode features podcast giants Dax
Shepherd and Monica Padman from Armchair Expert and by the way,
here's the peak behind the Puzzler curtain. For each guest,
(00:23):
we come up with tons of puzzle ideas and then
winnow them down to the puzzles we think are best.
So with Dax Shepherd, I noticed his last name is
an occupation, Shepherd, and I've always been mildly obsessed with
last names that derive from occupations like Weaver or Butler,
(00:46):
or Cooper which means barrel maker, or Fletcher, which means
an arrowmaker. Anyway, we prepared a potential puzzle for Dax
based on Shepherd's and Cooper's and bookers, but in the
end we did not think it was up to Puzzler standards,
so we didn't give it to Dax and Monica. What
did we give to them? This delightful puzzle about podcast
(01:08):
and wordplay. Please enjoy. Hello puzzlers, Welcome to the Puzzler Podcast.
The Free Perfume Sprits at your puzzle department store. I
am your host, AJ Jacobs, and I am with today's guests,
(01:32):
the amazing Dax Shepherd and Monica Padman, hosts of Armchair
Expert and much much more. Welcome Dax and Monica.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Oh, we're delighted.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Thank you for having Can we be on every day?
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Absolutely?
Speaker 3 (01:47):
I'm so sad you're not on this network doing this.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, it's a shame. We're taking it.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
This will be a hostile takeover and a game of puzzles.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
We are ready to be taking it, are you kidding?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Well?
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Well today, speaking of podcasts, today's puzzle is called Armchair Export.
That's not an E, that's an O. Because we are
very tricky here at the Puzzler Cool. So the idea
is that all the answers in this puzzle are podcasts
that you know and love, but we have changed one letter.
(02:23):
Oh cool, I'm going to describe the podcast. So for instance,
I kind of gave it away, but if this were
a podcast from Dax Shepherd and Monica Padman about shipping
upholstered seats overseas, that would be.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Export.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Okay, I see how this works. I'm glad you gave
us the example. I thought you were just going to
change one letter, but then I got scared that we'll
expose ourselves as not knowing as much about our industry
as we should.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Okay, well these are these are relatively big ones. Okay,
so but I I'm here for I'm here for hints too. Yeah,
well I'll give you one more example. Just if the
Clue was a podcast about a guy who gulps a
lot of drinks very quickly. And this was hosted by A. J. Jacobs,
(03:15):
And it's featuring guests Dax Shepherd and Monica Padman. Okay,
Chuggler the Gozzlerugler.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
And you changed all the z's to gees chugging something.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Just one letter, change just one letter? We practice.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
We could do another puzzle where you change three letters.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
And jugglers.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Want it runs all right? Are you ready? This is
a podcast from the New York Times about It's about
the latest news in small ornamental lace.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Mats, Little Matz the doily.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Who wouldn't listen to that?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Grandma's would unite around that one?
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Uh? This is a podcast about a former late night
talk show host who makes meals for his hungry pals.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Conan who needs a friend, But you got it.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
You're there. Conan. Wait, what is the real one?
Speaker 4 (04:38):
That's the question. We're trying to first start with the
what's Conan?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And he wants a friend, but we're not sure what
the perfect Yes.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
It's it's not want. He does more than want.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
He needs a friend.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Friend.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Okay, so now, so Conan needs a friend is a
real name. And then the.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Clue was a show about a guy who makes food
for friends.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Yeah, he looks for friends or he.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Needs Oh, that's good.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
I like that. I'm gonna give you credit. That is
not it, but I really like that because also that
could be a massage show.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Try to get it correctly.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
After dark, Conan means a You're you're thinking too clever.
This is just like if you're giving someone something to.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Eat, you are. Of course.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
It's a friend. Nicely done. But I prefer needs a friend.
All right, We got two more. This podcast features first
person true stories told from the point of view of
a green citrus fruit from m PR. They're often like
(05:59):
very almost tweet stories.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Is this is this American life?
Speaker 2 (06:03):
I made a face, okay, and then we got a
line in there.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
It's a line this American lime.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
This American lime, This American lime.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Wow, I love it.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
We really worked that. I could see.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
I saw the gears turning. Well this one, this one
actually is a little harder, but I'm I'm confident, all right.
So this one is a very big shot. You may
not have heard it, but it's a lovely show. It's
a podcast about ropes, ties, and pretzels, among other things.
(06:41):
It's hosted by Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark. Right here
on the iHeart network.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Ties and pretzels.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Stuff you should do.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Stuff you should do. Oh because pretzels. I like there.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
But okay, stuff you should know.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, stuff you should know. I love that show.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
We got to mess with no new you got ropes, ties, pretzels,
stuff you should not, stuff you should not not.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Fall Good job, mine, well done.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Look at that.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
Those are the nicest boys in the world. I want
to shout out. Those are the nicest boys.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
I am so glad you said that. I am a
huge fan as well.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Me too.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Actually, Chuck was a was a guest right here on
the Puzzler.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Oh of course did he kill it? Did he do so? Well?
Speaker 1 (07:39):
He was? He was lovely and he's a good chuckler.
He just chuckled his way through it. Uh, we had
a good time. Well you did great, you got them
all you.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I can't believe SmartLess wasn't in that mix, right, I
was already preparing, like what, how was he going to
change one letter.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Word?
Speaker 3 (07:56):
But that's hard because that word is so specific, it's
hard to swade on.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
It almost can't be done. Shartless. Oh, I got a show,
a show about.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
Someone who's never had an accident, and there's slacks.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Shartless is fantastic.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
You just took it to a new level, or maybe took.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
It down to it.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Edited less.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Boy, we'll throw an E on it and we will
keep it in that people need to know. Wonderful. Well,
I can't top that. But still for the puzzlers at home,
here's one. This is another NPR show that explores wheat,
(08:45):
barley oats and other things you cannot see other types
of things like that. You can't see that. Oh, the
host is shun carved, by the way. So that that's it.
Where can people find more Dax and Monica? Or if
(09:06):
you're listen, maybe you're starting the shartlest the Startless podcast.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
We might be launching Shartless next week, so keep your
eyes peeled for that listen last time. We just recommend
you listen to our show wherever you listen to podcasts.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
But I'm gonna might just pick so we don't know.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
So I think our show is most heavily consumed on
hiking trails. Oh, that seems to be where people love
to listen to because it will get you a good
two hours of working out.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
So my suggestion is, like, just saddle up next to
someone hiking and see if you can't eavesdrop on their headset.
That's how I would want someone to hear our show next.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Wow. So now the recommendation is how to listen?
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
How and where we're also where someone's headphones on.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
You almost made this a puzzle. I see where you're.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Trapped in shartless How to listen? Yes, just sidle up
to someone on the trail. They won't be alarmed that
you're a serial killer.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
And make a new friend and enjoy some armchair expert.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Great.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
Do it well, thank you, I will do that. And puzzlers,
please don't forget to subscribe to the Puzzler podcast and
we will meet you here tomorrow for more puzzling puzzles
that will puzzle you puzzlingly
