Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to the solid verbal. I'll that for me. I'm
a man, I'm forty.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
I've heard so many players say, well, I want to
be happy.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
You want to be happy for a day? Edo state
is that?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Whoo whoo?
Speaker 1 (00:14):
And no dem and tie.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Dan Rebinstein, I interrupt our side chat talking about the
King of Kong documentary to bring Week twelve college football
previews to the verbalerhood.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Welcome back, my friend. How are you? I'm good. I
don't even want to talk college football if King of
Kong is on the table to discuss. I have not
seen it. I know of it, but I have not
seen the doc. Order yourself a big takeout order of
Thai food or something. No pun intended, but I appreciate
how on the nose it kind of sounds. Find your best,
most worked in cushion on the couch and just load
(00:53):
up for the best eighty two minutes of your life.
Oh man, Okay, so we have week twelve? Am I
getting the week correct?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
It is week twelve already if you can believe it.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yeah, We've got a long rundown of games that I
cannot wait to watch. With the asterisk if I'm able
to as the YouTube TV sort this out. I don't
believe so have you seen anybody here? It's insane? I
believe I am sane. I've got my my antenna hooked up.
(01:23):
It could not make the basement TV area look worse
as it's just lodged into a window pane in the well.
It's terrible, but it gets the job done for ABC
and i'd last two weeks ago, I did sling. I
guess I could do Fubo or something. I don't know
what my plan is in terms of a streaming carrier,
(01:43):
but in any case, I am in a lather. How
excited I am for Week twelve? How about that?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
I am as well? Well, welcome back one and all.
My name is Ty, his name is Dan hit Fall
hit subscribe if you have yet.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
To do so.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
We got a long way to go, partner. It's only
like the mid part I know of November. I mean,
this thing is longer than ever before.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
We've got playoff news.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
That we're going to talk about here momentarily. Of course,
We've got a bunch of games that we need to preview.
Got a whole host of fun oddities that I think
we will cover over the course of the next hour.
Hour and fifteen or so. Of course, we did an
hour and forty five great on the Tuesday episode, and
thankfully people didn't punish us too much for that.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Excuse me.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
We had a lot to get off our chest, and
we'll see where this episode goes. Of course, forballers dot
Com is where you can go if you want to
support what Dan and I do. We will talk and
do course about run the board, our week twelve Pick
Them game, and what the prize looks like.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
But before we.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Dive into all of that, we have a little bit
of a time on our tradition here. Yes, we do
on the saliverbo College Football podcast where.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
We give it a nickname.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
This was started from the old practice I guess it's
probably still in circulation over ESPN, where they give very
specific weekends the nickname of Separation Saturday or like Showdown Saturday.
They only had like show Me Saturday. They had a
rotation of like three or four names that they went
with the try and act cool.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
We took it, We ran with it.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
We give much more appropriate and creative nicknames, and this
year I have abdicated any and all responsibility that I
had with giving nicknames over to you. Because I think
you're better at it. So with that preamble, Dan, what
do we got for week twelve?
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah, I'm unafraid to find a centaur Saturday if one
should exist. So I'm looking at week twelve. I'm looking
at the number of let down spots after last week.
So the number of teams I listed here BYU let
down in that they had a big opportunity on the
road and kind of fell flat. But it was more
that Texastach just happens to be very very good, Oregon
(03:54):
in Iowa, each of them went. Oregon has a short
week against Minnesota, Iowa was going across the country to
take on USC. Clemson a big win, I guess for
Clemson against Florida State, short week now against Louisville. Louisville
an overtime loss against Cal needs to get its act
together quickly for Clemson. Georgia has played a bunch of
tough games in a row. Bama tough games in a row,
(04:16):
Arizona chaotic win late now travels to Cincinnati. Do Glosta
Yukon do they have it this week in a big
game against Virginia Miszoo, San Diego State. The list goes
on and on. And it's not just about let down
and do you have that same sort of burst after
being emotionally let down after last week or just tired.
It's November, right, It's what do you have in the
(04:37):
third quarter? What do you have in the fourth quarter?
And so when I think about the burst, when I
think about the speed, it's not necessarily what you have
in terms of the home run hitting or the pick sixes.
It's this is something I relate to immensely, Tie, who
is the least slow Okay, who has the ability to
stay up as we get into and it's not a
(04:59):
bad weather weekend. So I have this and this is
a dual nickname here because I'm also honoring you here.
Welcome to speed Test Saturday. I want that connection, Tie,
I want that connection to the reality of this home
stretch for a number of these teams. And so we
are in that place where you know, Oregon barely gets
(05:23):
by Iowa. Not that Minnesota has been terrific this year,
but it's short week against the quality team. Ish, It's
I love it. It's speed Test Saturday. Colin. What kind
of connection do you have or what's your connection? So
speed Test Saturday, I love it. Thank you love it, Dan, Well,
(05:43):
not a sponsor could be. This also honors Tie because
Tie has finally upgraded his Internet to more modern speeds.
Somebody who works in.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
This industry, I thought today would feel different. It just
sort of feels like a normal day. But yeah, it's
definitely live it in the future now that I get
three hundred megabits per second.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Up, look at you? Ooh yeah, give me that. So
you want that? You want to James speed test Saturday?
What was the what was the speed test Saturday? Colin?
What's your connection? What is your connection?
Speaker 2 (06:17):
We got to start here at the very top though,
because this was not something that we had a whole
lot of a chance to address.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Because we couldn't. This New Eve will be so awesome.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
We've got playoff rankings, Dan.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
I believe there's a game on New Year's Eve this year?
Is there not? I can look.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
I think I remember the whole New tradition BS that
they tried to uh trumpet a couple of years ago. Yeah,
we had a game last year. It was Penn State
Boise State. We're gonna have another one this year. I
believe they're playing it in Arlington. I think it's the
Cotton Bowl that is being played on New Year's Eve. Nonetheless, Dan,
we have our second batch of college football playoff rankings
(06:59):
and they are as follows. Number one, two, three, and
four is Ohio State, Indiana, Texas, A and m in Alabama.
No big surprise there. Georgia remains at number five. This
is when we start seeing some mild changes as compared
to last week. Number six Texas Tech.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Of course, they.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Bump up two after dominating BYU. All miss at number seven.
Your Oregon ducks up one to number eight, my Notre
Dame fighting Irish at number nine. To round out the
top twelve, we've got Texas at ten, Oklahoma at eleven,
and BYU at number twelve. What this looks like in
(07:37):
terms of the projected bracket and I have projected in
all caps and in air quotes. I will get to
why in a second. The way that they have drawn
this thing up is.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
A solid ver Bowl between.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Notre Dame and Oregon, with the winner playing Ohio State
USF on the road at Georgia with the winner playing Alabama. Miami,
the projected ACC champion according to this and probably only this,
on the road at Texas Tech with the winner playing
(08:14):
Texas A and M.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
And then to round out the field.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Of twelve, number ten Texas Longhorns on the road at Ole,
miss with the winner playing Indiana Dan Rubinstein. So again,
you take a lot of this with the grain of salt.
We couldn't talk about it on Tuesday because we recorded
a Tuesday episode on Monday. We didn't know what theves
were going to look like quite yet. I don't know
if there are any huge surprises in here. The rankings,
(08:39):
based on what I'm seeing, based on what we talked
about on the Tuesday episode look a lot alike, a
lot of similarity there, so not anything in the way
of huge surprises. I do have some thoughts, but I'll
kick it over to you first. What's your reaction to this?
Speaker 1 (08:57):
It all sort of makes sense. I understand if you're
a BYU fan why you might be disappointed. I mean,
obviously BYU still ahead of Utah, but BYU with a
top ten loss, exclusively being behind Oklahoma and Texas with
two losses, Notre Dame with two losses. Now, mind you,
these losses are not bad losses for these schools Texas, Oklahoma,
(09:17):
Notre Dame. But you know you'd like a team with
one loss in a major conference that has only lost
to a top ten school to be maybe considered to
be a slightly higher level program or highly numbered program,
in this case, higher ranked program. The Miami thing is interesting.
The thing that works against Miami in this spot is
(09:38):
because you can speak more to this than I can.
Their path to the AEC Championship game is pretty uphill, right.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Yeah, it's it's a three point seven percent chance, right,
so into it beforehand.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
So the odds are and zero.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Okay, the odds are zero, and this is the ACC
so anything's possible, but true, Miami would need to win out,
root for Duke this weekend, hope that SIMU beats Louisville,
root for cal to beat SMU at the last week
of the season, and also cheer for pitt to beat
Georgia Tech.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
These are not crazy things. No, it's just it's a parlay.
It's it's a five, you know, six. I don't know
how many things you mentioned, but yes, it's a it's
a number of things needing to happen, which is very difficult.
And the thing that's also working against Miami just in
terms of an at large is that they don't have
a huge headline opponent left unless them vault them. Yeah,
(10:29):
unless Pitt beats Notre Dame this weekend, Right, that's what
they need, which would knock Notre Dame out completely and
would take Pitt into the top twenty, top seventeen or something.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Yes, would definitely make Pitt much more of a marquee
opponent when they meet the last week of the season
in Pittsburgh. That's what they would need, I think to
vault their chances. But like to the point here, the
bracket that the committee put out has Miami as a
projected ACC champion. They're not going to win the ACC.
(10:58):
Right again, it's possible ability. I think there is a
stronger possibility that it's going to be somebody else, and
we will talk about that through the course of our
projections and predictions here today. I think the more likely
scenario for Miami is that teams in front of them lose.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Right.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
You know, if you're a Canes fan, if you want
to get into the field, it's far more likely that
teams in front of you lose, that you root for chaos,
that a bunch of stuff breaks in the final couple
weeks and you kind of worm your way into it
by virtue of that as opposed to an ACC title game.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Yes. And the other thing is just when you look
at the other some of the other two loss teams
with which they might be competing for that spot, a
lot of them have a headline opponents left right. Texas
has Georgia this weekend, Oklahoma has Alabama like, there's a
lot of huge resume tent pole situation like Michigan as
Ohio State, USC has Oregon and Iowa this week depending
(11:52):
on your opinion of an unranked Iowa at this moment.
But there's a lot there for these teams to help
their and so that's the difficulty for Miami specifically. But
all things considered, still a moderately successful year otherwise, I
don't have I don't think I have a ton to
complain about. I respect Texas Tech getting that bump up
(12:14):
to number six after their win against an undefeated power
conference BYU team. We talked a little bit about Indiana
sliding beneath Texas A and M. But it's not like
Texas A and M has blown everybody out right. They
had a couple close calls against Well, close call against
Notre Dame, and a close call against a less than
stellar Arkansas team, but the way A and M has
(12:34):
played recently in Indiana needing every second to be a
Penn State team, lame duck coach, backup quarterback.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
You.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
I understand the case for A and M if we're
looking at a more recent resume structure. But again, I
don't have any specific problems because Indiana's win at Oregon,
you know, beating a top ten team on the road,
holding him to thirteen offensive points, it's a huge, huge deal. Otherwise,
I understand Virginia dropping like they did and the doubt
(13:02):
about their future with Chandler Morris's injury. I understand Louisville
dropping like they did, losing at home to an unranked team.
I guess I said I was unranked. I was ranked one, Yeah,
I was twenty one. Yeah, And let me direct myself
latest batch of ranking.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Can I circle back to what you said about BYU
for a second, Please do, please do, because I do
understand where BYU fans are are are coming down on this.
I understand the sentiment they are currently twelve. They are
on the outside looking in. The argument is, hey, we've
got one loss on the road against the top now
six opponent and we're now ranked below three two loss teams.
(13:41):
My counterpoint would be that I think all of the
teams in front of BYU are better than BYU. That's
my count, Okay, all right now, that is not necessarily
based on metrics.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
That is based on I test.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
I have watched all of the BYU games at this point,
after many BYU fans screamed at me to do so,
I have done.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
So.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
I am in prest by what they have done this season.
That does not necessarily mean that I have them in
the top twelve.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
By the way, the metrics don't love BYU in terms
of like pure efficiency with the manner in which BYU
has played against quality teams. Yeah, the most impet portant
metric isn't really a metric. It's that they've won those games.
But in terms of in terms of the manner, they
have not been as lethal. Look they their net points
per drive is below Florida States in this moment. Now,
(14:28):
that I think is much more of a question about
Florida State coaching. That they're able to move the ball
some and stop the ball some and not win games. Sure,
but BYU is not performing on a per drive basis
like Louisville, like Arizona, like Yukon, like Pitt, like North Texas,
and obviously there are different schedules. But BYU is really
(14:51):
well coached and executes really well at the end of games,
which should count for something. But to your point, they're
not performing like these other teams are more consistently.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Now, I don't think so, But listen, what I think
almost does not matter, because if you're a BYU fan,
you win out, you're getting in the Big twelve title game,
and then you get the rematch, presumably with Texas Tech.
So it's it's still a situation where you basically control
your own destiny, agree and you still have an opportunity
(15:23):
to get in.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
You also.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Are in a situation where the teams in front of
you are probably going to lose. Like, if I'm a
BYU fan, I'm rooting like hell for Alabama and Georgia
this weekend.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Get Texas, get Oklahoma the hell out of there. Man. Yeah,
root for Pitt, Get Notre Dame out of there. You know.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
So there's still I think a pretty good set of
scenarios that could get by into BYU into this thing.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
All hope is not lost.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
But got to take care of business, give yourself an
opportunity maybe as a Big twelve title contender, and if
nothing more, there are teams in front of you that
are probably going to lose. I do think style points
matter down the stretch. Is a big game coming up
next weekend on the road at Cincinnati that I think
will be really significant in this whole title chase, And
(16:13):
so it's still sort of there for BYU. If they
would play Texas Tech again, they would obviously need a
different result than what we saw right. I was gonna
say that could jumble things up as well if you
would beat Texas Tech the second time around, and Texas
Tech probably doesn't fall completely out. But this is going
like eight steps in the future. All I'm saying is
as opposed to the Miami conversation which we had before,
(16:33):
which is basically, you need teams in front of you
to lose or some crazy conference scenario to get you
into that title game. BYU actually has two ways in,
but it is getting late early. They need to take
care of business in order to accomplish one of them.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Yeah, Miami needs that like seven result parlay exactly. The
unfortunate thing for BYU is if they're making the national
the Big Twelve championship game, it's likely against Texas Tech,
given Texas Tech schedule, and so that is a mountain
that they're going to need to quickly learn to climb
because Texas Tech finishes with I believe West Virginia and UCF.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Yes, it's very winnable. If you're a Texas Tech fan,
I think you're thrilled.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
You're in a good spot. You'd have to have an
enormous letdown moment.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Yeah, absolutely, And depending on how things go for Georgia
the remainder of the season, there is a likelihood that
Texas Tech could win the Big Twelve, could finish, you know,
one of those first four seeds. I don't think that's
completely out of the realm of possibility. If nothing more,
(17:37):
they could end up as a five seed and draw
the twelve, which right now they're projecting as USF. I
would project as USF as well. So if if you're
a Tech fan, it's everything's coming up Red Raiders right now,
and you got to feel pretty good about that. If
you're BYU fan, obviously there's still some work to be done,
but you do have multiple pathways in is all I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
Yeah, I hope we get Oregon, Notre Dame. It'd be
easy if there were. We have to go to that.
I think we have to I think we have to
go to that, right, So, I haven't been back to
Eugene in a number of years. Obviously, living in the
Chicago Burbs South Bend is very much drivable, and yeah,
just stay here. I think we would have to go
to that. We would have to go.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
And by the way, I have been game planning and
trying to put together some scenarios, and I can come
up with about seven different ways that we do end
up with that game. Even though it's like way early
now and a lot's going to happen between now and then.
It there are a lot of possibilities that get us
(18:37):
that game, maybe not necessarily as an eight to nine,
but I could definitely see a couple different ways in
which we end up with that game.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
I would love to I would love for that to happen.
So I'm in and I guess it is. It's sort
of we got to come up with a rhyming scheme here,
but like the race to be seated fifth begins now, right,
that's the move. It is how do you how do
you align your schedule and not schedule, but how do
you align your results? How do you what do you
(19:06):
pray for in terms of teams losing ahead of you?
Right now? You want to be an excellent team not
necessarily playing in a conference championship game. Yeah, that's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
So Organs lined up real nicely for that. Yeah, Organs
line up well for that. Or miss is like definitely
rate for that. Yeah, it's uh, it's gonna get it's
gonna get interesting. We will, of course be covering this
as closely as we can over the next.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yeah, all the way through to the conclusion once we
have our playoff field set in stone, but.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Strive for five there it is. I like that. I
like that.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
And by the way, there are a bunch of other
teams here that we need even mention that could find
a way to a lot of leaping ability kind of
like worm their way into this thing. You know, Georgia
Tech is nowhere to be found. Georgia Tech stands a
great chance of being in this playoff field if they
go on to win the ACC the game that we're
going to talk about here in just a little bit
between Duke and for Gina is going to have I
think an outsized impact in who that game features. I
(20:05):
don't want to give away the game too much. Why
don't we get into our picks.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
By the way, Georgia Tech has a resume tent pole
as well. They absolutely do in a top five Georgia. Yeah,
let's uh, let's let's make some picks, all right, Dan,
and time to speed test Saturday? Call in Dan, Yes, uh,
what's the connection? What's give me the sound one more time?
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Anytime we can incorporate a bod modem sound on this show.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
We gotta do it. Yeah, just it's a no brainer.
Gotta do it.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
We previewed two games on Tuesday. We previewed the Notre
Dame Pit game. Previewed the Tech or Texas. Excuse me,
I'm getting my Texas schools mixed up. Please forgive me. Yeah,
the Texas Georgia game as well. We have had about
forty eight hours now to sleep on those picks, to
offer any further insight, to mention any additional items, anything
(21:05):
for you on the Notre Dame Pit game.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Yes, okay, so Notre Dame Pit. Wise, on our previous show,
I sort of expressed more and more optimism about Notre
Dame's chances here, even on the road. The more I
dug in things that I don't love about PIT. Terrible
in the red zone both sides of the ball. And
that's okay if you're able to prevent explosives and generate
(21:30):
them offensively, which they've done a good job of doing.
They go three and out way too often. They give
up too many big plays, and so that's not a
great formula. And Notre Dame being explosive themselves, never going
three and out and being pretty good in the red zone.
I just I think it's a nice connection, by the way,
there it is. I like that.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
By the way, we did not mention patn Ardozy's comments.
Patnerdozy was asked whether it's a must win game for PIT. Quote,
absolutely not. It's not an ACC game. I'm glad you
brought that up. It's not an ACC game. I'd gladly
get beat one hundred and three or one hundred and
(22:14):
ten to ten in this game. They could put up
one hundred on us as although we win the next
two after that.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
Quote, So maybe that public messaging is not necessarily a
big confidence builder. Internally to say, like, let's lock in
and beat Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
I mean speaking of reverse jinxes. Yeah, is he trying
to put like anti bulletin board material out there? Is
he trying to get in Notre Dame's head by going
so one on what other coaches normally would say in
this scenario.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
It's it's an interesting tactic that you don't often see
in the middle of a season, in the middle of
a team trying to lock in for a stretch run
as they're caning for a conference crown. It's it's unusual.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
I kind of love this, by the way, I kind
of love it where everybody is used to.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
The answer when you say is this a must win?
Is this a big game?
Speaker 2 (23:10):
And he's like, ah, maybe, but really we're good.
Speaker 1 (23:14):
It's also like the idea of taking the weight of
the game off of your team's shoulders. Right that if
he's sensing that they're too tight ahead of Notre Dame
and he's trying to loosen the mood and loosen the
culture and say like let's just play football, well we'll
see what happens. Let's just go have fun. Right.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Also, he's not wrong, Actually.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
No, he's not wrong. But again, this is an unusual
public declaration.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
I understand that you don't normally say this. I understand
that this is certainly not if you're a Pit fan
listening to this. Yeah, this is not what you want
to hear. However, he is not wrong. If they lose
this game but then win the rest of them, Pitt
is in all likelihood playing.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
For the a SEC Championship. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
So I hear what he's saying, And as a Notre
Dame fan, I do wonder if there is like some
unmentioned voodoo going on behind the scenes that is causing
him to say this. But Pitt at Home is a
eleven and one half point dog. I am still gonna
stick with Pitt because I have too much scar tissue
(24:23):
from this game in the past. Our friend Tim Murray
over at Viisin has texted with me this week and
has said a couple times over the line tells the story.
Listen to the line, even if you don't bet. The
line tells a story.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
Tim. I hear you, you are not wrong.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
I cannot bring myself to do it, So I go
Pit plus the eleven and a half. But I've got
Notre Dame winning by about seven.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
And if there is a likely blowout, which direction is
it going?
Speaker 2 (24:48):
If there is a likely blowout, it would probably be
Notre Dame blowing out Pitt.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Yes, yeah, that's where I'm leaning. I'm leaning comfortable Notre
Dame win.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
You got anything else on Texas Georgia the revenge spot
for Texas, i'd.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
I still like Georgia. I said it was between like
seven and nine points. I believe somewhere in there. The
spread is around six six and a half depending on
where you look. Third downs when Texas has the ball. Okay,
Texas has been extremely average on third down. Georgia has
been extremely average defending third downs. This is sort of
(25:21):
like the movable force moveable. I'm gonna get that wrong time.
But you know where I'm going with that. I do.
I do the idea of Texas on the road, just
figuring out ways to find seeing eye singles on third downs,
whether it's with Arch's legs, whether it's baking in a
number of easy throws, especially early on on third downs,
(25:41):
to take the crowd out of it a little bit.
That's what I'm extremely excited to see how Texas and
Georgia handle. So it's Texas finding ways to stay on
the field. It doesn't have to be pretty, and Georgia
finding ways to make it unpretty. Shout out TLC for
Texas on third down. That to me is the big
deal because this we talked about this a little, that
(26:03):
george is not a big you know, edge rush, pass rush,
pressure team. That's not how their defense is built necessarily.
But if Georgia finds ways to confuse, to spy, whatever
they need to do to get this defense off the field,
I think that's going to be huge. I have something
to add, please. I received an email dan uh Oh
(26:26):
Caleb from Kansas City. I've been a huge Texas fan
for the last twenty ish years, following after my dad.
I had been growing my hair out since COVID with
trims here and there, but finally donated over fourteen inches
to Locks of Love. I am cashing in this donation
(26:47):
in hopes of breaking the Georgia curse. Now.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
He did not offer an actual receipt, but he did
send me a before and after photo.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
Dan, Okay, how did it turn out? Block of the week.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
I was already going this way, but Caleb gives me
even more impetus to play the sound Georgia minus six
Man of the Week. Sorry George Lock, Sorry George, Now listen. Yeah,
the thought dawned on me while I was in the
(27:26):
shower before hitting go on this.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
If we keep going on this path where the reverse.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
Jinx actually works, and I mean it has worked truly,
I gotta make sure I got a double bolted door
that the mob doesn't come in here and try to
brough me up. I got to protect myself from some
fan bases out there.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Like we are. We are dealing with some true dark
arts here. Are there a lot? Is there a lot
of mafia activity in the Lehigh Valley.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
No matter where you go. Okay, so let's just I'm
proceeding with caution. I don't want to flaunt this, but
since Caleb was charitable with his fourteen inches of hair,
I thought I could reciprocate. Here we're locking up Georgia.
By the way, we did get another message from somebody else,
another gentleman who donated a wonderful head of hair to
(28:20):
Locks of Love as well. He wanted me to jinx
notre dame. I'm not going to do that, but I
am going to send him that's just a consolation prize.
Let's say yeah, to kind of reward his charitable efforts.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
I love that we.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
Got a couple other games here that we need to preview.
Let's start at three point thirty on ABC. This is
number eleven Oklahoma. It's number four Alabama. Alabama is a
six point home favorite. My initial gut was to go Alabama,
which was my cue to look a little harder at
Oklahoma fair. Oklahoma was off last week, as you know,
so they got the rest advantage. I don't know if
(28:58):
there is a letdown situation that exists for Alabama after
beating LSU, but I do think that's a possibility. This
is a game in Tuscaloosa, which is of course a
plus for the Crimson Tide. Yeap, what gave me cause
for pause the favorite pet charity. In my opinion, this
is the best defense on Alabama's schedule by a clear margin. Okay,
(29:24):
and Bama's a fairly one dimensional passing offense.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
You know. I like Ty Simpson.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
I saw Dan Brugler from over at the Athletic hasm
as QB one makes sense in the twenty twenty six
NFL Draft. There's obviously been a lot to like about Simpson.
There's obviously been a lot to like about this passing offense,
but I do not love the matchup of a one
dimensional offense against a Brent Venables defense, a defense, bhind
(29:50):
you that is fairly blitz heavy, very zone heavy. I
think he tries to speed up ty Simpson. I think
he tries to confuse ty Simpson. So with all that
being said, the big question on my side is whether
Oklahoma can create pressure with those blitzes in a way
that at like, for example, LS, you couldn't you know,
(30:11):
LS use an even heavier blitzing offense or defense. Excuse me,
And they only got pressure about half the time because
the Bama line is really good in pass protection. But
if you can pressure him, the numbers go way down.
He's not turning the ball over, but the numbers go down.
Like any quarterback college football, you actually get pressure on them.
Completion percentage, some of the other stats that we chart,
that stuff tends to go down. How do you feel
(30:33):
about this one? Is this something that Oklahoma can do
with great success?
Speaker 1 (30:38):
I think somewhat. The Alabama offensive line has been inconsistent.
At times, they look dominant, obviously sort of opening things
up for a rushing attack, which I don't think is
on the offensive line specifically, but it's on you know,
the connection between the offensive line and the coaching staff
and what kind of priority the rushing attack has within
this offense. This is this is something that I've looked
(31:00):
at for this game. Georgia on the road, Vanderbilt Miszoo
on the road, Tennessee, South Carolina on the road, and
then there's a bye and then the LSU game. There
have been no weeks off for Alabama. It seemed like
the South Carolina game might be all things considered, Bama
needed a borderline miracle to win that game. And so
you talk about legs, you talk about speed, you talk about,
(31:22):
you know, having it for the home stretch. I think
Alabama does. I kind of also think Oklahoma does. Like
if the Oklahoma defense may be the best thing in
this game, if John Matier is getting healthier, if that
hand is getting healthier, the thumb is getting healthier by
the week, I thought They're win at Tennessee was one
of the better wins of the season in the sports.
(31:44):
The loss to Ole Miss isn't great, but there is
something about Oklahoma in this specific spot. Alabama and second
halves has not been all that impressive on offense, and
you're adding that as you mentioned that singular dimension to
what Oklahoma's defense faces. I think it comes down to
(32:04):
a couple of drives late, and so I'm happy to
take the points, first of all, and then second of all,
to what degree do I like Oklahoma outright do? I'm
not happy to just take points. I think this is
going to be a folk hero game for Jeometer. I
have Oklahoma winning this game twenty three to twenty. Wow.
(32:25):
And it's just the like the number of games in
a row for Alabama, the lack of rushing black of
being able to win this game in multiple ways. The
second half lulls for Alabama. Not that Oklahoma's putting forty
five on teams, but you know, they struggle with Leonora's
(32:47):
sellers a little bit. And I don't think Oklahoma has
a receiver who's capable of having a big play moment
like Nick Harbor had in that Bama game. But there
is just something about this spot when it's happening. Oklahoma's
defense on the road, on the road, look at you.
They did it against Tennessee. They were much more impresive
against South Carolina on the road than Bama was Yeah,
(33:09):
I think Bama's really really good, but I don't think
they are unbeatable anywhere. So I'm going Oklahoma out right here.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
Bill Connelly just posted a piece out at ESPN dot com.
Might have been earlier today or late yesterday, I'm not
sure exactly when it went off. And Oklahoma has been running,
by the way, they've been running a lot. They've been
running better. They absolutely been running better. Bill's peace was
ranking quarterbacks across college football. One of the nuggets that
he included about ty Simpson was just like a line graph,
and he was showing how there have been Actually, even
(33:42):
though ty Simpson has been very good, the returns on
the passing game have been diminishing over the last like
six games or so. And so I harken back to
what I said at the very top of this. Of
the defenses on the schedule, Oklahoma is not only like
maybe the best, but right now they are the best
at getting pressure with their blitz and just getting pressure
(34:04):
in general. I think ty Simpson is going to see
a bunch of different stuff against this Oklahoma defense, and
I think it'll be a real test for him. I
think it'll be a real test for this line. The
other thing worth considering, And forgive me if you mentioned
this already. This is like a must win spot for Oklahoma.
You know, there's seven and two, they're eleventh in the
(34:25):
playoff rankings. You lose this one, you get the three losses,
your hopes going up and smoke. They're not going to
win the big or they're not going to win the
big prize in the SEC and not gonna win the conference.
But there's still a I think a pretty good chance
they could find the way into the playoff.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
But they gotta win games like this. Yeah, I think
they are good.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
Enough on defense to make this ugly. I think they
are tough enough on offense to keep this one close.
I've got a twenty three to twenty one final, also
in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
Oh man, Ty, what are we doing out here? I'm
congratultions Tobama. Congratulations Bama. I've got Oklahoma outright. I'm with
you on this one. Yeah. Look, though they have a
loss with Jah Matier and his throwing finger, throwing thumb
whatever to Texas where he threw three picks, I just
(35:17):
I don't know. I think it works out well for
ou and I apologize Tobama now on your behalf, or
not apologize. I apologize to Oklahoma on your behalf for
picking them. Congratulate Bama. Yeah, congratulations.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Let's go to three thirty Big Ten Network number twenty one,
Iowa number seventeen. USC USC favored by six and one
a half points.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
This game's a bit of a letdown look ahead sandwich.
Oh luka, don sandwich. I'm so hungry. I'm so hungry.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
It's just not the normal kind of letdown look ahead sandwich.
Oh okay, because it's a letdown for Iowa after almost
beating Oregon last week, it's certainly a look ahead spot
for USC with Oregon on deck next week on the road.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Yeah, I don't think it's a sandwich for us. S.
I understand what you're saying. But for us, we'll take
a ranked college football playoff pole team. Seriously.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
Yeah, for us as passive observers, this is a little
bit of a letdown look ahead quality to it. But
this game's a Sudoku puzzle for me. Man, I don't
even know where to start. I don't like USC's offense
is incredible. There's still the number one S and P
plus offense. Iowa has the number six S and P
(36:33):
plus defense. They've already proven themselves more than capable of
holding down a really good offense, as they did against
Indiana several weeks ago, as they did last week against
Oregon in a monsoon. By the way, there is also
monsoon possibilities for this game. Is it full monsoon or
just rain? I didn't look at the nam the official
Oh that's okay. Yeah, the official forecast is periods of rain,
(36:58):
with rainfall potentially totally one inch.
Speaker 1 (37:02):
In the span when this game is happening. I believe so.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Not at night, earlier in the day, I believe, Yes,
I believe so.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
So if you're gonna underthink this game, what would your
your brains tell you.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
If I were gonna underthink this game?
Speaker 1 (37:18):
Yeah, don't dig in, just think about it. See.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
My problem is I always underthink the games where I
see a really good offense and a really good defense,
and I always side with the offense. You side with
the offense, Okay, yeah, so me underthinking it in the past,
not to give too much away, in the past, I
would underthink this and I would say, us, he's gonna
kill him.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
I don't think us he's gonna kill him. I almost
think Iowa this season against their opponents, I just don't
think they're gonna be blown out by anybody. I think
they run the ball well enough this year. The offense
is not catastrophic. The passing game is catastrophic. Passing game
is non existent. But they run the ball really well
this year, and that's both because of the running backs
(38:02):
and because of Mark Ronowski and USC gettable on the ground.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
One hundred and twenty sixth in defensive success rate against
the run.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
Yeah, I would say so. Michigan was not able to
do it. Michigan's one of the better rushing teams. Iowa
is a different team on the road, it seems this year,
and USC is a different team at home, it seems
this year. I like USC to win this game, and
I think it's just a math problem. To me. I
don't see how Iowa scores twenty points, and I don't
(38:30):
see universe in which USC doesn't score twenty points. I
think there are too many ways. Look, King Miller got
beat up. I think he had a stinger who's been
good at running back for USC. I think they have
the best offensive player in this game in Makay lemon Us,
he does. I think they have the more varied number
of more varied number. They have a more varied offense,
(38:51):
they can succeed in more ways USC can. And defensively,
why keep two safeties super deep? Right? You can stack
box against Iowa and i as creatively scored points. But
on the road this year, you know, Rutgers scores like
thirty points. They lose to Iowa State. They just haven't
been the same team on the road. They're now traveling
a good distance in a letdown spot. I think I
(39:12):
have what did I write down here? I think USC
twenty four to seventeen, So I guess that's barely covering.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
I have twenty one nineteen, oh, okay in favor of USC,
and I'm gonna I'm gonna paint a very specific scenario
for the verbawler hood twenty one thirteen late Iowa scores
on a Mark Kronowski touchdown, they go for two to
tie it and they come up short.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
That's how you get to twenty one nineteen, twenty one
nineteen okay. So yeah, I have twenty four to seventeen.
Maybe a busted player too for Iowa, like we saw
last week against Oregon. I think they're gonna be able
to run the ball some, but USC will tighten up
in the second half like like they did and have
done sometimes defensively. So yeah, I have USC here, even
(39:58):
in the rain. I think they figure out a way
and saying send Lincoln Riley off to Baylor or whatever
and good standing. Yeah, I mean, I think Iowa is good.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Enough on defense to hold down USC's offense. And I
just I agree completely with what you had to say,
almost all of it verbatim.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
They're just they're not.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
Going to get blown out, not with this defense, Okay,
And I don't think they're gonna win out right, but
I do think this ends up being a knife fight
to the death. So you know where I stand. Twenty
one to thirteen late Iowa won the late touchdown run.
I do think they'll be able to run some YEP
on this USC defense because USC is not good at
stopping the run.
Speaker 1 (40:37):
YEP should point out Iowa did beat Wisconsin on the
road thirty seven nothing, so against teams with an offense,
Iowa hasn't been incredible. Against teams without an offense, Iowa's
been terrific on terrific. Yeah, so we agree again, Well
you have IOWA covering, you don't have IOA covering. What
do you now? Twenty four to seventeen? So what is that?
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Is that USC suff having half a point? Okay, yes
we disagree. Well we got another three thirty game. Three
thirty is a very active block, this one on ESPN
two if you can watch it. I don't know what
the deal is with this. You could probably pirate this
game and get away with it. Number nineteen Virginia on
the Road at Duke. Duke is favored by five and
(41:20):
one half points this game. As I said at the top,
as I've been saying for three weeks running, now, this
game is going to help us solve the ongoing riddle
that is the ACC. So again, the winner of this
game wins out, there is a near certainty that they
will get into that ACC championship game against Georgia Tech
(41:41):
or Pitt or SMU. Louisville could stick still creep in there.
We talked about Miami still finding a way to creep
in there if you hit the seven game parlay or whatever.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
The big unknown at time of.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
Recording, and again we're doing this Wednesday at midday. Chandler
Morris for Virginia.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Yes Channel.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
Morris went down last week came out of the game
in the first half of last week. Initially, it was
described as a head and neck injury. Tony Elliott referred
to it as an upper body injury when he talked
about Chandler Morris yesterday, but also mentioned he's going through protocol,
which would imply concussion. I have no idea what's wrong
with Chandler Morris right. Tony Elliott, though, did sound optimistic.
(42:22):
They didn't have him practicing on Tuesday, mentioned that they
hoped to get him back on Wednesday, maybe even Thursday.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
So we're just going to have to.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Wait and see on this one. The uncertainty around Chandler
Morris is at least why partially why let's say sixty
five percent of the bets right now and eighty five
percent of the money eighty three percent of the money.
Speaker 1 (42:49):
Excuse me, is on Duke, do you.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
Prefer the Blue Devils who are crazy explosive on offense
and have a terrible deen in my dad, or do
you prefer the Who's which have an offense, which have
a defense that are just slightly above.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
Average, you know, I mean, the defense is pretty good
for Virginia, But is it good enough to carry them
against Duke If they're not able to get to twenty
points to seventeen points or something like that, I kind
of have my doubts. Yeah. See, that's see.
Speaker 2 (43:22):
I have problems with games like this where you've got
one team that's on the extreme yes end of offense,
no end of defense, right versus House seems a school
like yeah, half team versus a school like Virginia, which
is just sort of like.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
Blase.
Speaker 2 (43:41):
You know, they're not super sexy. I don't mean they're
not good, they're blase. I think they're quality. I don't
mean to apply they're not good. They're they're certainly quality.
But what I'm saying is from a number standpoint, you
look at it and you're like, oh, they're like forty
fifth best, Okay, Like it's it.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
You don't have the extremes like you do on the
Duke side of things. Virginia rush is the passer very
very well. They play the pass very well. The thing
you need to understand, I think that I need to
understand or reinforce whatever, is that Virginia's played against some
very bad offenses. Right. I think some of these numbers
are a little bit inflated. You know, Wazoo and North Carolina,
cal Wake Forest, and against some of the better offenses
(44:17):
that they did play, they gave up points, they gave
up plays Florida State, Louisville, you know they won those games.
They give up thirty five to NC State, which has
a quality offense. Like if the Duke offense is quality,
they're gonna score twenty eight thirty one points. And if
you're giving them short possessions three and outs, you know,
five and out whatever, and your defense is getting worn
(44:38):
down over the course of this game is scoring thirty
eight points. So I'm going to underthink this and say
thirty to seventeen. Now, Also, look, you're thrusting a backup
quarterback into action like Virginia did last week in a
losing effort against a tough defense, and that's tough to
immediately be good and fully realize. It's Daniel Kalin, that's
who came in. Yep, so he'll if he is the Yeah, well,
(45:00):
I'm sure he's preparing like he's going to be the guy.
Depending on Chandler Morris's availability, he should be better because
he will have more experience, he'll have more practice reps,
and the Duke defense has been very bad this year,
so the opportunity is there for him to improve, and
so I don't want to discount that possibility. But in
this case, with it being at Duke, with Duke having
(45:22):
that path, I'm gonna go Duke care thirty to twenty.
I'm covering.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
I'm on Duke thirty four to twenty three.
Speaker 1 (45:33):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (45:34):
I like the UVA story more than I like Uva,
you know, I like the idea of Virginia more than
I like the team.
Speaker 1 (45:42):
And they have it been blowing out those teams that
I just mentioned. No, I mean, there's been a lot
of close games on this thing. It's sneaking by Wazoo,
sneaking by North Carolina. Cal was comfortable and of course,
you know, scoring nine points against Wake Forest. I you know,
I think it's a great story the Virginia season. Just
like you.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
It's a fabulous story. And I got to give Tony
Elliott a ton of credit for it. But I just
I compare the numbers, and I've watched, you know, enough
of both of these teams. At this point you could
probably make a case that there are some big plays
out there for Virginia because Duke gives up a lot
of them. But also, Virginia is not really a big
play offense, you know, it's not really what they do.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
Well.
Speaker 2 (46:25):
If I saw more indications that they could do that
consistently than I would say, that's obviously something that could
come back to bite Duke. Duke has done a really
good job this year shooting itself in the foot, and
we can't rule out the fact that maybe Duke will
find a couple of those in this game the gift
wrap to Virginia and give them a few extra opportunities.
I think they probably will. It's just will that be
(46:48):
something that Virginia can capitalize on? Will Channeler Morris be
out there to help them capitalize on it? So I
too much uncertainty for me. Virginia has felt for a
while like an LRO team where the luck's going to
run out. We did see the luck run out against
wake Forest. Maybe it was partially because of injury, who knows.
But I do like Duke a little bit more in
(47:08):
this moment thirty four to twenty three, I think is
where I'm at. Okay, so we agree, we agree, let's
go rapid fire through I don't even know how many games.
These are might be a dozen games or so. Yep,
High Noon on Fox, number eighteen Michigan and eleven and
a half point road favorite against Northwestern. They are playing
(47:29):
this game in Wrigley Field, Dan Rubenstein, are you're taking
the boys?
Speaker 1 (47:32):
Go into not taking the boys? I know a ton
of people. I gotta watch a lot of games. I
think there are birthday parties, maybe a basketball game. I
don't know. I can't keep track time. We've got a
schedule for this Wriggly will be maze and blue. There
will be some purple, but it will be largely Maze
in blue. There's a huge population of Michigan people here.
It will be a u not a de facto home game,
but a comfortable experience for Michigan people for them to
(47:55):
watch Northwestern cover the spread in this game. Wins are
swirling at about twin ty miles an hour time woo breezy.
You've watched Cubs games, you know how it is it wrigularly,
you've watched Northwestern games, you know how it is. I
think there is going to be something to Michigan. Michigan
hasn't had like a late season swoon or something like that.
But this is not a team that has taken care
(48:18):
of business efficiently, especially not on the road. Northwestern is
going to look too shorten this game like they should,
so I just think it's going to be low scoring,
and I think it's too many points to give in
a low scoring affair. Michigan. How many points better was
Michigan than Perdue? Five points better than Perdue? I think
Michigan is a pretty good team, but I don't think
they're going to blow out a team in Wrigley that
(48:39):
is looking to get to a bowl game, that is
still playing with fire. So I'm going to say Northwestern
keeps it within seven to ten points. Let's call it
twenty three sixteen Michigan. Yeah, I've got it.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
Twenty four to fourteen Michigan.
Speaker 1 (48:56):
Yeah, so they win. I think they cover.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
Let's go to another game at high noon, FS one.
This is Arizona on the road at number twenty two Cincinnati.
Cincinnati favored by six and a half points. And while
you give your pick for this game, Dan, I'm gonna
briefly jolt off screen and turn off the space heater
that I have because I am I am sweating bullets
(49:21):
in here right now, I'm afraid to put my arms
up for fear that I've got a whole thing like
pity's going on. So please give me your pick here,
and I need to like give myself a little bit
of relief.
Speaker 1 (49:31):
This is Yeah. If you're watching on YouTube, it looks
like Tis being interrogated, like he's under the lamp and
he's like, I wasn't at that salon that Holy crap,
is it hot in here? Continue? I'm sorry. I like
Cincinnati season, not like Arizona season quite a bit. I
actually think Arizona covers this game. I think Arizona's defense.
You saw Brendan Storesby struggle with confusion and turnovers against Utah,
(49:55):
a game in which Cincinnati had opportunity, and I think
it was something twenty four to fourteen, kind of deep
into the game, and then Utah just busted it open. Arizona,
I think is gonna make things chaotic enough in a
nooner to keep this one closed. I think Cincinnati escapes,
but I think it's close.
Speaker 2 (50:15):
I am with you on Arizona, and I also think
that there's a little bit of a look ahead situation
going on here. Cincinnati's got a big one on deck
against BYU, and this is an easy game to overlook.
Arizona is an easy team to overlook. But bear in mind,
if Arizona wins out, they finish nine and three, which
(50:36):
would be a huge success story a year after going
four and eight, where there was some speculation about firing
Brent Brennan.
Speaker 1 (50:44):
YEP.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
So Arizona is just as good of a story, if
not better than many of the other teams that are
getting way more love across college football. I have to
credit Brent Brennan for the job that he has done
so far this year, and Danniganzalez by Way and Danny
on defense, they're very good on defense, especially against the pass.
I can only assume they brought in forty three UTEP
transfers and they brought in the correct forty three.
Speaker 1 (51:08):
Everybody's got like forty three UTEP transfers.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
Yes, but this is the reason why I put this
one on the under the radar slate when we talked
about these games on Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (51:17):
Yeah, there's juice to this one. There's real juice.
Speaker 2 (51:19):
So give me Arizona plus six and a half YEP,
twelve forty five. Because the SEC and SEC network like
to be a little bit different. This is Arkansas on
the road at LSULSU, favored by five and one half points. Dan, Look,
there aren't huge stakes attached to this one. I just
think it's gonna be fun. I think this is gonna
(51:39):
be a fun game. I think this could be the
week that LSU finally gets to thirty points against an
FBS team.
Speaker 1 (51:45):
Excuse me, I think you're right. I also think Arkansas
is winning this game. Hoggs lock of the week? Whoa baby? Okay,
luck of the week? Where are you going Arkansas here?
I don't know. It's something about the times, Ty. The
times just seem ripe for Arkansas right here, with LSU
(52:09):
dealing with quarterback change potentially. I haven't seen the latest
on Nussmeyer MVB, but everything off the field happening at LSU.
The offense looking listless for long stretches, to the point
where they had to bench the quarterback against Alabama. Not
that Arkansas offers anything defensively, but I think Arkansas should
be able to run the ball. I think Taylor Green
(52:30):
should be able to make plays. This is an out
This is a game that has had outcomes that are
inexplicable over the years. I'm going to Arkansas to win
this one thirty four to thirty one.
Speaker 2 (52:41):
I'm going to go LSU thirty one twenty four. Okay,
I think LSU wins and covers. But look, it's going
to be an entertaining game one way or the other.
Speaker 1 (52:52):
I agree. And by the way, Arkansas has played good
teams tough this year outside of Notre Dame, in which
I think I liked Arkansas.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
Yeah, Road, I like Darkansas. I like Darkansas too.
Speaker 1 (53:03):
This is true. So Arkansas is coming off of a
bye on the road this year. Arkansas tight against Ole Miss,
tight against Memphis which they should have won both of
those games, perhaps tight against Tennessee. And here we are
now at LSU in the midst of a lot of uncertainty.
Speaker 2 (53:19):
Let's go to another game of high noon ESPN two.
This is number twenty four South Florida. This is unranked Navy.
South Florida is a ten and one half point road favorite.
Navy won this game a year ago twenty eight to seven.
I believe that was a game without Byron Brown on
(53:40):
the USF side. I like USF a lot. Here, you too,
A lot pains me now with you saying I know
I'm expecting that Blake Horvots is going to be back
for Navy. He was a game time decision last week.
I would think if you give him a week to recover,
he'll have an opportunity to play here against the Bulls.
I don't know that for sure. That's just me making
(54:02):
an assumption. Notre Dame moved the ball at will at
will against Navy, and more specifically for this game. I
don't think the Navy defense has what it takes to
contain Byron Brown, who can run. He is the leading
rusher for USF. He also can throw it, and they've
(54:23):
got a really good cast of characters out wide. Yeah,
so I'm looking for a lot of shots downfield. I
don't think Navy has what it takes to go toe
to toe with this South Florida team, and I think
they win this one going away.
Speaker 1 (54:37):
I like them a lot. I think I do too.
The noon thing worries me a little bit. Obviously, Annapolis
can be a bit of a trap for a lot
of programs, but yeah, I don't think they have the
defense to get off the field and sort of inflict
pain via the offense, and South Florida's played the run
really well this year. Todd Orlando has done a good job.
So I'm going USF here by I don't know, seventeen.
Speaker 2 (54:58):
For PM ESPNU if he and find the network on
whatever your streaming thing is. Memphis at ECU, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (55:08):
ECU favored by three.
Speaker 2 (55:09):
They are whisper quiet and six and three this season.
They play at an absolutely blistering pace. They are tops
in all of FBS in plays per game on offense eighty.
Speaker 1 (55:26):
Damn, which is a lot. That is a lot of plays.
Speaker 2 (55:30):
They've also got a solid defense. Their issue is giving
up big plays. They've been giving up a lot of
them this year. The question for you is is this
a situation where Memphis is licking their wounds after losing
to Tulane a week ago. We also saw earlier in
the year a very clear look ahead loss when they
lost to UAB and they were looking ahead to a
(55:52):
big game with USF, which they did win. By the way,
I think there's a possibility we could see a real
letdown here on the road at ECU.
Speaker 1 (56:01):
What do you think? I went back and forth in
this one. I like that ECU is led by their defense.
The game is at home. My problem is ECU kind
of can only win in a very specific way. I
don't like when. I mean, it's it's smart to rely
on tempo. Like you said, they play very quickly, but
they haven't been able to generate bigger plays, so the
tempo sort of acts as a way to give a
(56:25):
boost to this offense. Yes, I just think Memphis has
more ways to win, and I think I trust their
quarterback situation a little bit more, even though it's on
the road here, I'm going to Memphis seven pm ESPN.
Is this gonna be Laye Kiffen playing against this future
(56:45):
team Dan? You know, I kind of hope so, because
I would love some spice added to this coaching carousel.
I mean, i'd be great if Lane Kiffin were to
stay in Oxford and say I got it good here.
He's been on the record of saying he's not gonna
make a decision for money, so I think he's got
it good at Ole Miss. I think, if I had
to guess, I think he's gonna stay at Ole Miss.
But it's just a guess, but certainly it's on the table.
(57:07):
He didn't give a like an answer of nope, I'm
happy where I am. I'm gonna be back here next
year if they'll have me. He said something like I'm
not even thinking about it, Like I'm going to think
about that another day. It's like some version of that
I'm paraphrasing here. I think ole Miss rips him apart.
Before last week, I would have told you, you know,
(57:30):
Florida's not great. They're not well coached, the offense isn't
called well, but they compete. They've got good players. It's
really tough to blow this Florida team out because they're
two talented in too many spots. Then they got blown
out by Kentucky. Yes, and I think I'm just out
on this Florida season in terms of salvaging relevance. It's
also a revenge spot for ole Miss. Obviously, Jackson Dart
(57:52):
no longer on the team, but the way that game
ended last year, I could see Lane being particularly locked in.
So I have ole Miss here thirty five seventeen.
Speaker 2 (58:03):
The line is sixteen and a half points in favor
of ole Miss. It does sound like DJ Lagway is
going to get the start. Remember he got unceremoniously benched
a week ago. Saw that in that game against Kentucky.
I think Florida could be the one, two three can
kun team of the month, Like, I wonder what their
(58:25):
motivation is here to really go hard at any of
these opponents. I'm with you on Old Miss. I am
with you on Old Miss. I don't know if Lane's
going to Florida. I don't know if anybody is going anywhere.
As we've been recording this today, I see news out
there from Chris Lowe, from Brett McMurphy and Pete Nakos
(58:46):
that Louisville is working on a contract extension for Jeff Brohm.
So nobody's going anywhere. So yeah, it could be that
nobody is going anywhere. And if you threw your hat
in the ring trying to hire a big coach away
from somebody else, you might to have to take a
high profile coordinator.
Speaker 1 (59:02):
Yeah, what's what's Penn State's interim Terry Smith? Terry Smith? Yeah,
new head coach? Don't think so.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
I don't know, but stranger things have happened and could happen. Okay,
seven pm, ESPN two Utah minus eight on the road
at Baylor. Do we have a reason to pick Baylor here?
To you?
Speaker 1 (59:24):
I mean, I don't know what kind of de facto
super Bowl situation. It is for Baylor. You can bring
up their schedule, but no, Utah is coming off a
bye correct. Utah is off of bye week. Yeah, I
think I like Utah a good amount. Here. I think
Baylor season has been a mess after I think a
somewhat promising start. Yeah, I'm gonna go Utah here. I
(59:46):
think they're just too well coached, too locked in. I
think they're straight at Baylor. They're gonna run all over them.
They're gonna run all over them. They're gonna win by
fourteen points. Yeah. I wrote down thirty five to twenty one,
and twenty one might be too many to give to
Baylor in this spots, maybe even like thirty eight seventeen.
Speaker 2 (01:00:02):
I will probably probably post at some point on Saturday
morning that I am making Utah one of my bets
of the week. Okay, so take note everyone. I went
zero to four a week ago, I went three and
one the week before. There's a pretty good chance that
you should bet on Baylor. This is a public service
that we're doing here. I have no ego about this.
(01:00:23):
By the way, Baylor to be right, but if I
can help other people make money, then so be it.
Speaker 1 (01:00:28):
Whatever. So Baylor the second half of Baylor's season since
like a not great performance on defense against what Oklahoma
State gave up nearly thirty points. Yeah, so they were
right there against a healthy ish ASU team and lost.
Beat Kansas State with a weird ending. We're back and
forth with TCU and a loss destroyed by Cincinnati. You know,
(01:00:51):
three touchdown loss. Offense was not good at all against
Cincinnati on the road, and then they just demolish UCF.
Maybe not out of nowhere, but they're also coming off
of a buye so maybe something happened before that UCF game.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:01:07):
All right, let's go to seven forty five on SEC
network because they like to be a little bit different.
Speaker 1 (01:01:11):
I don't know if you'll be able to watch this game.
Speaker 2 (01:01:13):
But yeah, Mississippi State on the road at Missoo Miszoo
favored by seven and a half points.
Speaker 1 (01:01:17):
Bit of a.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
Letdown look ahead situation maybe for Missoo had the A
and M game a week ago, they got a Oklahoma
on deck. I also think it's worth noting Mississippi State's
gonna be super up for this game because they only
need one more win to get Bowl eligible.
Speaker 1 (01:01:33):
They got two left It's true.
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
This one on the road against Miszoo. They close out
the year Egg Bowl at home against Ole Miss. Seven
and a half is the points bread, Dan, who do
you got?
Speaker 1 (01:01:45):
I actually like Missoo here ooh. I like Miszoo here
because of the specific matchup of what they can do
on the ground versus what Mississippi State allows on the ground.
I think Matt Zohlers made a couple of nice throws
last week and a great effort against a tough obviously
A and M team, But I think we'll see some
(01:02:06):
improvement against this Mississippi State defense. I think Misssippi State
will compete, but ultimately I think the Missoo running game
and defense is a formula that is going to be
a mountain that's just a little bit too high to
summit for Mississippi State. So I have Missoo here twenty seven,
twenty twenty seven that wouldn't cover it. Excuse me, thirty
to twenty one. I'm going to take Mississippi State outright. Wow,
(01:02:30):
okay in como.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
Yeah, yeah, I'm taking I'm taking Mississippi State out right.
This team's just playing with fire. They're playing with fire, man.
I don't mean that in a bad way.
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
They're just they're hard out.
Speaker 2 (01:02:46):
I don't know what state MISSOO is in after that
loss a week ago against Texas A and M. But
I like the grittiness with which Mississippi State's gone about
its business, and partially I am rooting for them to
win this game so that they can get to a
bowl because I think they deserve it.
Speaker 1 (01:03:06):
Man, I don't know how are they going to block
Maszoo up front? I mean, I know, Arkansas Dan or
where's my sound? Where's my sound talking about this? Some
things do not need to be mentioned on this preview podcast. Okay,
So Mississippi State is one hundred and twenty ninth and
sacks per drop back allowed? Yes, and they get them
Mazoo front.
Speaker 2 (01:03:26):
Okay, ten fifteen ESPN if you can find it, TCU
at BYU Battle of the acronyms here. Yeah, BYU, as
we mentioned earlier, the twelfth ranked team in the latest
batch of college football playoff rankings, there are four and
a half point favorite. What are we betting on if
(01:03:48):
we bet on TCU at this point?
Speaker 1 (01:03:51):
What's the hook is there? Yeah? I mean it's potentially
a letdown spot for BYU after having their season altered
disappointing loss to Texas Tech and you know, being both
a letdown and a body blow theory situation, after being
physically dominated for stretches of that game against a TCU
team that they're not going to overlook. But that is tough,
(01:04:11):
has playmakers on both sides of the ball. My problem is,
I think BYU is just better, and they're playing at
home and they're very good. I believe on third down
on offense, TCU is real rough there and in terms
of like winning is a skill, I don't see it with.
Speaker 2 (01:04:29):
TCU, No, And that's that's sort of where I came
down in this one, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:04:33):
Especially on the road, losing the way they did to ASU,
losing the way they did to Kansas State, barely getting
by West Virginia. I just it's not an offense that
I love scoring seventeen in a lost Iowa State and
that was a special team's loss as well. There's too
many ways for them to have brain farts.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
I mean, they're consistently inconsistent. Yeah, and it's kind of
the opposite of what BYU is. BYU isn't always sexy,
but they are pretty consistent. Just are consistent in that
they find ways to get it done, and they didn't.
Last week they played Texas Tech. Texas Tech was clearly
better in that game, but BYU has been pretty rock solid.
(01:05:10):
I'm going Cougar's here. I think it's something like thirty one,
twenty four. Yeah, I'm with you, ten thirty CBS Sports Network,
late late, late game here, Boise State at San Diego State.
San Diego State favored by three Dan.
Speaker 1 (01:05:25):
Yeah. Obviously disappointing week and now so this is it's
a big travel week for San Diego State, even playing
at home because they came back from Hawaii, which I
assume is the closest you know, major FBS school too
of the Islands. But even still Froyd got Troy. I
don't think Boise State is gonna have much of an
(01:05:46):
offense with their continued Maddix Madison absence, So I'm gonna
go San Diego State here to keep Boise's offense down
with their still very good defense even after a really
nice story in Hawaii, not just last week but the
entire season, had their way with the Aztecs. So I
have San Diego State here twenty three to ten.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
I'm looking for a big game out of Lucky Sutton,
the running back for San Diego State, the big, bruising,
downhill type of running back that they've got. Huh, they're
a three point favorite. Gimme San Diego State minus the three.
Speaker 1 (01:06:18):
Yeah, I agree? And one more game here, if we
could travel back in time, Dan, please, seven thirty ESPN
Friday Night Lights, Clemson at number nineteen, Louisville, Louisville. We're
gonna talk Oregon Minnesota. You talk about it. We're not
gonna give me the beauty of talking about Minnesota not
(01:06:38):
scoring a road big ten touchdown in almost three hundred
and sixty five days.
Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
I believe the point spread in that game is twenty
four and a half in favor of your Oregon Ducks.
That's nine PM at nine pm on Fox on Friday Night.
Speaker 1 (01:06:51):
Do you have a lean that one? I might actually
take the points that Oregon. I don't. We're curtball Oregon is.
So it's short week off of a road, a tough
road spot, a letdown spot a little bit for Oregon.
I don't think Minnesota's offense is all that good at all, so,
and I like Oregon's defense a good amount. Oregon's still
(01:07:13):
gonna be without a bunch of key dudes on offense,
so they're gonna play rotation dudes. This is just gonna
be like, get your guys healthy, play some twos and threes.
The defense is gonna show up against Minnesota. Dante mor
Is still playing quarterback. They'll score points, but it almost
feels like a twenty eight to seven type where they
just they're not going to keep the horses in because
they have the finish against USC and Washington coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
All right, Clemson, Louisville, Clemson, Louisville. Uh, I'm going Louisville. Okay,
I don't know what Clemson is right now, what they are.
They did beat mean Florida State. They did beat Florida State,
and I was all in on Florida State. I'm gonna
go Louisville here. Louisville finds a way to play in
(01:08:02):
just all one score games against teams that they are
both better than and worse than, so I believe this
will be close. I also feel like every Louisville game
ends thirty one twenty four, so I'm gonna go thirty
one to twenty four, Louisville winning this one at home.
Speaker 1 (01:08:19):
I may go Clemson here mostly because you took Louisville.
You're not wrong, man. If there is something to like
about Clemson this season is Bloe do they love leaving Clemson.
So they had an opportunity, obviously, and I think they
had the postgame win expectancy against Georgia Tech, a good
Georgia Tech team, blow out North Carolina, blowout Boston College
(01:08:41):
obviously to not good teams at all, but I think
there is a little bit of belief after beating Florida State,
not a good team at all, but Louisville the way
that they ended, they're missing their best play maker on offense.
I don't know. I just think Clemson right here in
this spot is in a good spot. So I'm gonna
go Clemson to score some points, not a ton of
points against the good Louisville defense. So Clemson twenty four
(01:09:05):
to twenty one.
Speaker 2 (01:09:06):
Dan Rubinstein, if you've got something going this weekend, I
would try to get out early, unless you've got a
specific rooting interest, like I don't apply for this for
this here segment because I've obviously I do this for
(01:09:27):
a living, but Notre Dame Pitt That game is early,
clearly I care about that, so I would not be
going out on the town to watch Cats again in
that early window.
Speaker 1 (01:09:41):
But if you are.
Speaker 2 (01:09:44):
Not in the situation where you got a team plane early,
I would probably try to get out early. Do what
you gotta do. See the community showing of Cats or
the producers or whatever it is that you're into. Go
after the speed skating round in go get speed skate.
Speaker 1 (01:10:00):
Yeah we speed Okay, Yeah, I mean it's skating. Got
any rings channel?
Speaker 2 (01:10:03):
Your enter?
Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
Was it? Apollo? Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:10:05):
Oh yeah, man bro grow grow that little go tee
whatever you know.
Speaker 1 (01:10:10):
Soul Patch.
Speaker 2 (01:10:13):
So early I think is the target for you. I'd
want to get back late. I'd want to watch Texas Georgia.
I'm pretty excited about that matchup. Agree the quad though
would be in the afternoon three thirty ABC, Big ten Network, ESPN,
two CBS.
Speaker 1 (01:10:30):
You could watch those networks.
Speaker 2 (01:10:31):
I do see that the Athletic is reporting that there's
potential momentum for a YouTube TV ESPN deal to be
finalized relatively soon as size move a little bit closer crazy.
That's from Andrew Marshand, So we'll have to hope for that.
If you are one of the YouTube TV people, out
there as Dan and I are not a sponsor.
Speaker 1 (01:10:49):
Absolutely could be.
Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
You've got Oklahoma, Alabama, Iowa, USC, Virginia Duke, and Penn State,
Michigan State, which we didn't mention it. That's that the
Land Grant Land Grand Trophy. That's all at three point thirty.
You can also sub in Memphis and ECU if you're
a G six fan.
Speaker 1 (01:11:08):
I saw some Brian Kelly Michigan States team. Yeah, did
have a current coach Michigan State. Did you see that after.
Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
Brian Dable got fired from the Giants, he was walking
out of some building, maybe his home, wearing a Penn
State Nitney Lions sweatshirt.
Speaker 1 (01:11:22):
Maybe is that true? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, does he have
a connection.
Speaker 2 (01:11:25):
I don't know if there's a connection, but he was
wearing Penn State Nitney Lions sweatshirt.
Speaker 1 (01:11:30):
New York Post got him. Maybe it's just I would
not hate that. I would not hate that. Brian Dables
from roch No, he went to Canadian Yeah, he grew
up in New York, upstate New York somewhere. Has coached
in the NFL largely, But did you know Bill's recently
(01:11:51):
Giants recently coached for a season in the SEC at Alabama.
Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
He's almost definitely going to be an NFL defensive coordinator
or offense offense codinator.
Speaker 1 (01:11:59):
Yeah, yeah, But I.
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
Would not hate an offensive minded coach taking the reins
of a pencil. I would not hate that at all.
I don't know if Dabel is necessarily the kind of
guy that you'd want for that job, but of some
of the names that I have heard bandied about, I
would not hate that one at all.
Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
Maybe that was a signal like, hey, it was really
nice when Saquon was here. Thanks for trading away Saquon Barkley.
Maybe that was that's how we got the sweatshirt. He
got it for free from Saquon. Yeah, that's probably it,
all right. If you could just I mean, this is
just a favor for me to you, If you could
drop that big stanky, greasy grinding Drummond.
Speaker 2 (01:12:35):
Five greasy and grindings a little much. I'm not gonna
lie you think so, Baby a Baby, a Baby River,
twelve o'clock, Holy Cross, one in nine, Holy crap.
Speaker 1 (01:12:52):
On the road at buck Now five and five.
Speaker 2 (01:12:53):
We got.
Speaker 1 (01:12:57):
I guess, I guess buck Now g I was riding
for you, but I'm going buck Nell early.
Speaker 2 (01:13:02):
One o'clock Fordham also one and nine. Is anybody winning
these games in the pat League?
Speaker 1 (01:13:07):
Jesus Fordum one and nine on the road in multi
sport Field, talk about going to the House of payin
Georgetown five and five, looking to get bull eligible. Get
that six win, give me the Hoyas. Let's go Hoys.
I'm going Hoyas as well. It's just been that kind
of season for Fordham.
Speaker 2 (01:13:22):
Lee High Moundhawks number four in the FCS, currently ten
and zero on the road at Colgate four and six.
Speaker 1 (01:13:29):
Dan. This is the big and maybe.
Speaker 2 (01:13:31):
A little bit of a look ahead spot with the
big rivalry game against Lafayette on deck.
Speaker 1 (01:13:36):
Who you got Colegates won two of three, though they
gave up a sixty spot to Lafayette on the road
last week. I don't trust their defense. So yeah, it's
gonna be Lee.
Speaker 2 (01:13:45):
High and the last but was early now least Indie
pat Lee. We've got number twenty five Lafayette they are
ranked as well, seven and three on the road at
the Richmond Spider's already bull eligible at six and four.
Speaker 1 (01:14:00):
You got, uh so Lafayette? They lost what Bowling Green
and Princeton. In additional Oregon state, which was recent though
that was close halfway in, so they have not lost
in the pat League.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
Correct, No, there are no pat League losses here.
Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
I'm all a Laughayette big here setting up. I don't
know if it's next week or the week after next week? Yeah,
next week and that game is in Easton. Game is
in Easton, Fisher tie. Yeah, spicy for all the for
all the the pat League potatoes there it is, well, Lafayette, it's.
