Week 5 is absolutely loaded with monster games, and we're headed to Happy Valley for the Penn State-Oregon whiteout! In this college football podcast episode, we take another deep dive into the three biggest matchups of the weekend: Oregon at Penn State in what promises to be an electric atmosphere, Alabama traveling to Georgia in a crucial SEC showdown, and LSU heading to Oxford to face Ole Miss in another must-watch conference battle.

Beyond those headliners, we wonder if Ohio State might be in danger at Washington, whether USC can prove they're for real on the road at Illinois, if Notre Dame can stop Taylen Green, and if Auburn is trapped in perpetual limbo after another close loss. We also examine Indiana's statement opportunity at Iowa and dive into several intriguing home underdogs.

We also take a look at the latest news with Mike Gundy's sudden dismissal at Oklahoma State and John Mateer's thumb injury potentially sidelining Oklahoma's quarterback for up to a month.

Finally, we break down our Under the Radar Games worth watching, map out your optimal afternoon viewing quad for maximum entertainment, and identify the small window of opportunity to get errands done before the day's best action kicks off.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to the solid verbal.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
I'll ah for me. I'm a man, I'm forty. I've
heard so many players say, well, I want to be happy.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
You want to be happy for a day?

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Edo State?

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Is that? Whoa? Whoa?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
And now Dan and tie Dan Rubinstein.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
We are recording this on Wednesday around midday Eastern time,
which means in about forty eight hours you will be
coming to my neck of the woods. We will be
taking a grand journey across Central PA up to State
College in preparation for the big old white out game
between Penn State and Oregon.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
I'm excited to see you. I can't wait. You know what.
I always have my legal pad next to me, and
I'm writing down like there was like a viral tweet
a few years ago about an older gentleman before he
went out with his friends at a bar. He's like
potential discussion topics. I'm writing down road trip discussion topics
for you and I maybe we'll record it, maybe it'll

(00:59):
be an episod and we'll just call it good question.
And I just have a series of questions I'm going
to ask you regarding topics I think about all the
time that will only be available if available on Verballers
dot com. I cannot wait to not circumnavigate, but really
traverse across Keystone State. Yeah, Keaystone State. Baby, that's right.

(01:21):
I am so excited. Everybody I tell that I'm going
to the game and I'm going on like kind of
a road trip, They're just like, man, that's the best.
I'm so jealous.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
So good vibes all around up from this side, Ty,
I'm excited. It'll be great to see you. I'm excited
to get back up the state College. I haven't been
up in forever again. As we've said the last couple
episodes running now, if you are also going to be
in town for the game, hit us up. Soliverble at
gmail dot com. I started putting a Google sheet together.
Yeah we need a Google map. Yeah, Google sheet. I
haven't gotten to the map yet, but we'll work up

(01:49):
to it. Of all, the people that have invited us
to their tailgates are going to be walking around with
some goodies for the for bowlers out there. Don't want
to give away the game. Of course, if you are
new here, you know the drill, Hit follow, hit subscribe
so you don't miss any of the episodes. Tell your friends,
if you've already hit follow or subscribe. We want to

(02:10):
grow the forballer hood as much as we can. And yes,
as Dan said a few moments ago, forballers dot com
is where you can go if you want to play
in the Pickham Game this week. You're playing for a
two hundred dollars gift card to home Field, not a sponsor.
Absolutely could be. We use our own petty cash to
buy that gift card. If you're ever so inclined going
out to verballers dot com, sign up to be a

(02:32):
certified or premium for baller and join Run the Board.
That's the name of the Pickham Game, sir.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
That's a good amount of coin for home Field. Good
and get some good gear man, goodyear.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Love it. Have you given any thought to what this
weekend means to you, how this weekend should be labeled?

Speaker 2 (02:52):
There's a lot going on here, right. You pitched Storyline
Satder story Saturday, story Time story Time Saturday, which I
thought was pretty good. I just you look at the
meatiness of the week, you look at the travel quotient
involving big games. You look at just the implications near
the top for this week, and I got to thinking

(03:13):
about altitude. I got to thinking about how I feel
about these games, and I just kept coming down over
and over. I don't know, I like this dog. I
like this home dog. I like this dog. I like
this home dog. So I'm going in my mind, I'm
going sauer Kraut Saturday, Colon, load up on the Dogs.

(03:36):
I don't even know if I like sauer Kraut. I've
had sauerkraut before, but I like Sauerkraut. Saturday, Colon, Load
up on the Dogs. It's perfect. You're coming to Eastern
PA with me. That is true.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
We're going to be driving through areas with heavy Germanic influence. Yeah,
and we're making our way out to the game, and
it's got to tie into all the games that we're.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Going to talk about here in week five.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
I'm excited. Perfect not on Saturday. What was the subtitle, Colin,
Load Up on the Dogs.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Load Up on the Dogs, Baby, Load Up on the Dogs.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
On that note, let's get to some news. So there's
two big ones that actually went down within the last
forty eight hours, the most notable of which, at least
on the coaching side, Mike Gundy. One day after the
eighteenth anniversary of that infamous rant that will forever be

(04:32):
enshrined in our intro. They fired him. It was a
very bad start to the season, a one and two start.
This was his twenty first season in Stillwater. We know
that there was a fair amount of tumult, let's say,
at the end of last season, restructured his contract to
keep him around. But we had heard rumblings for a

(04:55):
while that and you'll recall some of the interviews we
did talking about Oklahoma State. There was kind of this
split within the fan base, people who overwhelmingly liked Mike
Gundhy and what he did for the program. He is
the best coach in the history of the program. No
one's even closed right. But on the same note, this

(05:15):
I think feeling throughout the fan base that things were
starting to peter out and that maybe he wasn't adapting
quickly enough given the times and how college football has changed,
so they.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Pulled the trigger. He's done.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Mike Gundhy out Officially. I have started to see some
names come through, which we can discuss here in a moment.
But were you surprised at all by the timing of this?

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Surprised by the timing, but maybe you know, behind the scenes,
you really don't know what those conversations are like if
people were running hot and everybody had just hit their
wall in a matter of speaking, whether it was Gundy,
whether it was the administration. Obviously, the manner in which
they lose to Oregon, after Gundy went on the record
saying like, we're not even in the same league in

(05:57):
terms of what we can pay people, and maybe the
those types of teams should only play those types of teams,
and so sort of positioning Oklahoma State very publicly as
I have not which for a long time. Given Tea
Boone pickens influence and donations to the program, I don't
believe obviously since his passing his estate is donating in
the same manner. But that is not something I'm privy to.

(06:20):
But it certainly doesn't seem like they're spending based on
what Gundy talked about, like what they spent on nil
or what they didn't spent on nil, and in the portal,
the manner of which they lose to Oregon after those
comments and then losing to Tulsa. Obviously, emotions and disappointment
running high in stillwater. But you are right, I was

(06:40):
a little surprised by the timing of it, but I'm
sure it has mostly to do with personality behind the scenes.
He's the best coach they've ever had, and it's not
particularly close. He's had. His first season was a losing season.
Oklahoma State has had one losing season that was last
year since that happened, but it did seem like Oklahoma
State was falling behind where they were as a consistent

(07:02):
conference title threat, especially given that the conference is perceived
to be a little bit easier without Texas and Oklahoma
than it was before, but certainly deeper now with quality depth.
But that Oklahoma State after two years ago, does not
appear to be an all positioned to compete for the
conference in the present or future. I think everything had

(07:24):
just sort of come to a head. But no, he's
a legend. The thing I posted yesterday was since his
playing career at Oklahoma State ended, Oklahoma State posted one
finish in the AP Top twenty and in that was
before Gundy's coaching term, and in Gundhy's twenty years they
finished in the top twenty ten times. So he's certainly

(07:45):
with his ability to evaluate assistant coaches, to recruit, to
evaluate players, to position Oklahoma State, a school without as
much prestige as some of the bigger schools in the
Big Twelve, beating them, finishing in the national conversation, and
obviously the Bedlam record is what it is, but beyond that,
he's an absolute legend there. And you can't tell the

(08:07):
story of twenty first century college football, forget the like
I'm a man, I'm forty, you just can't tell it
without talking about Des Bryant and Zach Robinson and Mason
Rudolph and Junkyard Jim Washington, like they've just they've produced
so much star power on both sides of the ball,
it just seemed to reach its natural ending. And that's
I guess where I came down on it.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
What I'd be most curious to hear about from our
Oklahoma State fans out there that listen to the show
two things. The first is whether or not the way
that they got rid of Gundy is appropriate, because this
is this thing that you see all throughout college football.
I mean, maybe not as much recently because some of

(08:48):
the coaches who have been the most tenured have exited
the teams right over the last couple of years, But
there is always this question, especially in this case where
the guy's in a lum as you said, the best
coach in the history of the program, this unceremonious firing
after a really bad start. I read online some people
who had issue with that, who took issue with that.

(09:11):
I understand that point of view, but I'd be curious
to hear from our people who listen here if they
felt like that was the right way to go, if
they should have given him a little bit more leeway
to kind of exit on his own terms and not
make this a public firing.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Right.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
The second is now that there is this void, how
good of a job to Oklahoma State people feel? This
is because I'm looking at this list of names, and
I would be comfortable with most of these guys.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Sure this is from Bruce.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
I know there are a few other articles floating around,
but Bruce Fellman, our friend at the athletic at Fox Sports.
Among current head coaches, he lists Jeff trailor Eric Morris
from North Texas who's done really well, great job. GJ. Kinney,
who I love from Texas State, as well as Alex Golesh,
who we've talked about I think a great deal here
on the show. From USF. He also throws out will Stein,

(10:04):
Ben R. Buckle, Shannon Dawson, Andy Kotal Nicky, and Jeff Nixon.
All five of those guys are offensive coordinators from Oregon
to Oklahoma, Miami, Penn State, Syracuse. And then he also
lists Zach Robinson, who's the OC right now at Atlanta
obviously has some ties to the program, as well as
Todd Monkin, who is currently the OC at the Baltimore Ravens,

(10:28):
who is the dream candidate. How good of a job
is it? Is it attractive? Should be an attractive position?
I am not steeped in all things Oklahoma State. I'm
sort of an armchair Oklahoma State expert, just having watched
the trends on this program for the last couple of years.
But I would really be curious whether in the comments
soliverbo at gmail dot com, whatever people think out there,

(10:50):
hit us up and let us know your thoughts on
the state of this program and whether or not it's
attractive and should be attractive enough to ruin one of
these guys.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Yeah, no, I think it's reasonable. You gave a lot
of good names there, especially the ones that seem to
be a little bit more local coaching in Texas, the
right guy is the guy who can inspire the money
behind the scenes. Obviously, right now there seems to be
a singular big fish in the Big twelve spending money
in Texas Tech, So that's not necessarily an attainable bar
for everybody, But obviously with Oklahoma States, or at least

(11:20):
how Mike Gundy described the state of the finances behind
the scenes, at least for him, it would be somebody
who can galvanize funds behind the scenes, because as it
stands now, there is no obvious group of teams who
will dominate this conference for years to come. Now, maybe
Texas Tech with how they're spending and how they're recruiting.

(11:41):
You know, the only thing I can also consider with
why Mike Gundy was let go given the timing, is
if he just flat out stopped recruiting right there. There
were stories about how there was acrimony between him and players,
and even not even acrimony, just like apathy, like wasn't
learning players' names. That was a claim that was allegation
that he was calling players by numbers and didn't seem

(12:03):
to know their names if they weren't the top of
the top. He denied that of course, But if there
was that apathy towards building this program continuously for the
future via recruiting, via portal, via you know, relationships, then
you're just like, well, we need somebody who can keep
this afloat to whatever extent. So if he had checked

(12:25):
out fully in terms of what his responsibilities are off
the field, I mean, I just remember seeing him during
the Oregon game. He was fifty yards away from the
line of scrimmage at times, like there was just like
it just seemed like time. And so I get it.
If any of those things are true.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
Yeah, and I would love any of these coaches, these
current head coaches that Bruce list saw off to see
what they could do. I would probably err more on
the side of Jeff Trailer than Eric Morris. But I
like the fact that at least this initial batch of
names that he threw out there, they're all pretty familiar
with that part of the country.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
So I'm curious.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
I'm very curious to see which direction this thing goes.
It's another opening. Again. We've been warning people for a
while now. It figures to be a very active coaching
carousel this time around, as opposed to last year, which
there were only a handful of openings, So Oklahoma State
is now open. They throw their hat in the ring.
There will be more to follow.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
And that's joining UCLA and Virginia Tech already. Correct. Yeah,
staying in Oklahoma.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
The news on the player front is that John Mattiir
has a broken bone in his throwing hands, specifically his thumb.
He is scheduled to have surgery today. We're recording this
on Wednesday, and it sounds like he's gonna miss about
a month of action. This is a huge blow for Oklahoma.
Oklahoma obviously is in the midst of a great start

(13:53):
to its season. They're on by this week. But in
terms of what they have coming up after the bye,
it's Kent State next week in week six, followed by
Texas in week seven, South Carolina in week eight, all
miss in week nine, and then as we get into November,
they're on the road at Tennessee. So it is a

(14:13):
tougher slate for sure of games that follow Kent State.
And it really is a question, and from what I understand,
they won't know for sure until after the surgery how
long he will be out, but if he's missing significant
time throughout the month of October. Those are some tough games,
and even though Michael Hawkins Junior stepped in last year

(14:34):
has plenty of game reps, I don't think he's going
to be coming into this thing completely blind. He is
not John Mattier, and some of these teams that they're
playing are going to be tough outs. So this is
one of those things that has potential to derail a really,
really good start for Oklahoma. And it's a huge bummer.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Yes, So hope he heals quickly, obviously, because he was
counted on for I mean, every quarterback's counted on for
the lion's share of production. But man, he was everything.
He was. He was ever things so far, mostly almost
overwhelmingly in the good column. The infrastructure is stronger on
this offense right that. The offensive line seems to be
in a better place. Offensive coordinator definitely seems to be

(15:11):
in a better place. There's more health at receiver. I
don't know that there are clear game changers to lean
on at receiver and running back. Given the upcoming schedule,
we'll see what South Carolina looks like. The Texas offense
is very much still a work in progress, and the
Oklahoma defense may very well have the upper hand when
they play, but the Texas offense can continue to improve

(15:32):
by then they have what Florida before then as well
as a test. I want to say, I saw that
reports were pretty strong for Michael Hawkins out of camp,
which were, yeah, would make sense, right. He was sort
of thrust into that role as a true freshman, which
is never an advantageous place to be. And so you
give him time to develop, and you say, you know,
development isn't necessarily linear, and so you give them time

(15:53):
and take a little bit of pressure off of his shoulders.
So he's had the mental reps this season and they're
in a better place. Is They're not a finished product
on offense Oklahoma, but I don't know, they're pretty damn
exciting with John Mattier. So hopefully he heals up and
hopefully Oklahoma can remain at the very least competitive in

(16:14):
some of these matchups and speedy recovery. Speedy recovery.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Indeed, it's a bummer. Hope he's able to come back
strong and before long, because again, this schedule is the
schedule was the thing that I think we were fixated
on when talking about Oklahoma.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
Yeah, man, we.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
All acknowledged upfront that this is a better roster that
they went out in the portal. As I've said time
and again, they understood the assignment Brent Venables did to
go out there and make this team better. The sticking
point was always a schedule, and so now the schedule
I think is going to play even more of a factor.
They still have the defense, which is a good thing
to lean on, but outside of John Matier questions about

(16:52):
that offense and what it looks like.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
Now, hey, it's one of our favorite tropes is in
play though. Right now Ty is the backup and the starter
lines are open up here. Dave Davis Dentil hotline entirely possible.
We shall see and last, but certainly not least here.
I don't know how much of a story this actually is,
but this pipes into the nice little internet culture of

(17:17):
college football. Okay, did you see that DJ lagway as
back in a walking boot? Yes? I did.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Per our good friend Richard Johnson, who I believe is
going to be up in State College this weekend. Out
have a chance to see Richard.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
The boot is to help with foot soreness, and there
is quote confidence that he will be back in time
for the Texas game next weekend. That is good news
for Florida.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
I saw Billion Napier say he's one hundred percent. He's fine,
it's just precaution. I just don't love those two words together.
No no no no no when paired with a major
quarterback name.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
And the reason that I bring up the Internet side
of it, the Internet's not going to accept that.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Right.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
The Internet is out there talking about how he's going
to sit out the rest of the year. He's going
to preserve his red shirt if and when there's a
coaching move he wants to give himself that extra year
of eligibility that could help him if he decides he
wants to transfer out again. I don't think this is
anything to worry about. I don't think even if there

(18:20):
is a coaching move that DJ's going to transfer. I
am sure that Jedfish will make a job one to
re recruit DJ Lagway once he gets to Gainesville. I
don't think he's going anywhere. But never let the facts
get in the way of a good story. I appreciate
what the Internet brings to.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
Stories like this.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
There is always speculation, especially when your team gets off
to a rocky start, that this is the type of
thing that could go on behind the scenes, and what
the hell do.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
I know if you're an enterprising young college football reporter,
social media user somewhere in between. Now is the time
to start the account at in a walking boot and
it's just updates about who is or is not in
a walking boot. That's right, so I can follow along?
Go for it all right? Why don't we leave it there?

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Why don't we get to our picks of the week.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
Let's go damn time.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
The week, sour Kraut Saturday, Colin, Load up those dogs,
Load up those dog baby go back.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
Listen to the Tuesday episode where we talked in more
depth about the LSU ole Miss Alabama, Georgia and Oregon
Penn State games. Maybe some additional thoughts here to share
before I do get into some of our other action
that we need to get through. What do you got?

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Cayden Durham is beat up and is questionable for LSU
ole Miss. I believe his ankle. Not that they've been
a terrific running team this season, but ole Miss has
not defended the run all that well. So maybe this
is a get right moment for LSU on the ground,
but Caden Durham questionable in this moment.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Did you also see that Lane Kiffen's twenty year old
daughter Landry allegedly allegedly pick this week to hard launch
a relationship with star LSU linebacker Wit Weeks.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
I did see that. That's interesting.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
I'm even heavier on old Miss.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
Now.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
Let me tell you, I'm going Old Miss minus one
and a half, two and a half, whatever that number
ends up being. I like Ole Miss in this spot.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
I don't think I have a changed thought. I still
think Ole Miss. They've been better obviously in this matchup
at Oxford. This was a relatively for them low scoring game.
Last year went to ot kind of a sloppy game
from both of these quarterbacks, but Garrett Asmeyer threw an
absolute dime to win this one. I'm sticking with ole
Miss here. I just I think the fact that it's

(20:46):
at home and that they are I think a little
bit more capable of winning in a number of ways
sways me to that side.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
Ole Miss is one of the teams that I've got
money on. I actually put the money on for ole
Miss as I did for Georgie. The more that I
read about this Alabama Georgia game. The more I feel
good about my Georgia pick and our Georgia pick, I
think we're both in the I don't no.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
I'm not more confident in my Georgia pick. I just
don't know what I can count on for either one
of these teams. And the game is at Georgia and
there is I think the most elite thing in this
game is probably Alabama's potential through the air. I think
Alabama has struggled to run the ball. Georgia has kind

(21:28):
of struggled to do anything excellently this season so far.
But I think I'm still going to give the edge
to Georgia at home. I just I think I want
to see more mental and emotional fortitude from Alabama on
the road before I feel good about them in a
spot like this.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
And on the Oregon Penn State game, which again all
three of these go back to Tuesday and listen if
you want the full deep dive. Turns out I misread
my own stat sheet.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
Yes you did, and that's okay. We're not perfect.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
Oregon is not super penalized on defense. Shout out to
our friend Jeff Schwartz who listens and pointed that one
out to you. Did you say that he let you
know in the middle of the night or was that
something else?

Speaker 2 (22:08):
It was pretty early on. We text all day, but Lea.
We also had YouTube commenters are like, what are you
talking about?

Speaker 1 (22:14):
Time? Yeah, my bad, my bad. That's okay, Mia Kolpa,
Oregon not super penalized. I dug into some passing grades though, okay.
Among quarterbacks with a minimum of fifty dropbacks, Drew Aller
grades out as the eighty fifth best in college football
right now.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
That's out of like three thousand.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
I don't even know how many there are, but this
is there, not three. The minimum threshold that I put
here was fifty, and he's pretty low on that list.
Your boy Dante Moore is in the top ten. Yeah,
he looks really good so far. For whatever the grades
are worth to you, I thought that was meaningful here
because it does support what I've been saying all along
that Drew Aller just hasn't look good so far.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
Better, Maybe he'll snap into form against better teams. I
don't you know. I don't always count on that, but
it's always possibility. It's still very early thus far, eighty
fifth best.

Speaker 2 (23:05):
I mean, I think the name of the game here
is just going to be Oregon trying to force as
many passing downs as humanly possible, and you know not
let Penn State run wild on the ground and set
edges and you know not allow these running backs to
run through arm tackles. That kind of thing much easier
said than done with these two backs at Penn State.
Penn State is also in a great place defensively to

(23:27):
show things to Dante more to perhaps force turnovers or
make them segos. This should be an incredible matchup. I'm
sticking with my pick for Oregon. It's not a great
spot right, traveling across the country against a frenzied crowd.
It's an incredibly difficult spot here, but I think Oregon
has at least more pop Dan Lanning, I look this up.

(23:49):
This was somebody on our YouTube comment list or something
pointed out that Oregon under Dan Lanning you need the
get in price to beat the Ducks as thirty four points,
So that's I mean, Penn State did score more than
that last season in the Big Ten championship game in
a losing effort, so it's entirely possible that they're in
that range, but the offense has not looked precise enough

(24:12):
early for me to feel good about it in this moment.
So I'm sticking with Oregon here. I forget what my
exact pick was, something like twenty seven to twenty. I
want to say that somewhere in that neighborhood. I'm sticking
around there. So, look, we're going to be at the game.

Speaker 1 (24:24):
We're not gonna be the press box, but we're gonna
be at the game in the stands like two normal fans.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
After the game, we're immediately going to run to an
undisclosed location and record the podcast. The plan right now
is to do the live stream as planned at midnight
or working through some of our options on that front,
but getting out of the stadium getting to our undisclosed location,
that could run a little bit long. There are one

(24:51):
hundred thousand plus that are going to be on hand
for this one, so if we encounter traffic, if we
encounter any kind of delay, the stream might start up
a little bit later usual. But that is the plan
right now. If that changes, we will make sure that
we post that everywhere imaginable because we want to do
our best to keep that appointment on Saturday night. A
lot of people stay up for it. They look forward

(25:12):
to it. We look forward to it, so we want
to do it. But this is just gonna be a
little bit different. It's going to look, it's probably gonna
sound a little bit different than usual. Just give us
a little bit of grace there until we can work
all this out. But we're excited to be doing it
in person. We never really do this show in person,
so it'll be fun.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
Agree, all right? High noon on the Fox family of Networks.
It is number twenty.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
One, Thank you, Dan, number twenty one, USC number twenty three. Illinois.
Illinois is a seven point home dog, Dan Rubinstein, the
line is crept up just a little bit.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
Yeah, I've seen six and a half seven right there?

Speaker 1 (25:53):
Yep, I went back. I watched all of USC's games
this morning. My cup of tea.

Speaker 2 (26:01):
Bowl oatmeal brag much, Okay, Jada, myov.

Speaker 1 (26:05):
Has been really good so far this year. Agree, Like
all facets of this offense look really really good right now.
And defensively, I think the tackling is better. Their defensive
front has definitely taken a step forward, just in terms
of like I don't know, pressure rate.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Saw that Jackiem Stewart play the freshman Jaqem Stewart when
he just launched himself into the backfield. Yeah, fifth in the.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
Nation and pressure rate yep. Now, some of that might
be related to competition, but more to the point that
we've been making all season one, not everybody who's played
bad teams putting up these kind of numbers. So what
I am seeing when I am watching USC is real
intention with how they're playing on offense, how they're playing
on defense, might have a lot to do with the competition,

(26:48):
but again, having the killer instinct that is great to see.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
O great.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
Was I wrong about USC in the preseason is the
question I keep asking myself, and right now I'd say, yeah,
it's kind of trending in that direction. Idiot, Okay, I
kind of sound like a fool because I said they
were gonna be worse. I said they were an eight
and fourteen. This doesn't look like an eight and fourteen.

Speaker 2 (27:10):
Not at present, nop. So let me offer this.

Speaker 1 (27:12):
Olive branch to the USC brethren out there that I
know listen.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
To the show double Down, time, double Down.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
I'm not going to double that tribble down if USC
flies halfway across the country, for what's gonna feel like
a nine am kickoff on the body Clock, and if
they cover this point spread, which right now is seven
against a veteran Leyden Illinois squad, I am going to
buy one of those Tommy Trojan helmets and I am

(27:42):
gonna wear it on the week that USC plays Notre
Dame when we record this episode. So you're saying, if
they cover this game, if they cover, they can win.
But if they cover, if they show that killer instinct,
if they cover this weekend on the road against Illinois,
I am wearing.

Speaker 2 (27:57):
The helmet before you bring it up. I also need to.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
Wear the Mulenberg shirt to honor the bet from two
years ago with our friend Tim Murray, our friend the Desert,
Tim Murray from Vsen. I feel like this is a
perfect opportunity for USC to show what they're made of
to go on the road. Weird circumstance, right with the timing,
go up against a veteran team in Illinois, which by
the way, has to feel like their back is against

(28:21):
the wall to some extent. Yeah, they can cover this
point spread, then I'm willing to admit that I was
fully wrong on USC. I will wear the helmet in
support of the Trojans.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
I hear you, So, but what do you think I'm
going Illinois? Plus the point?

Speaker 1 (28:37):
What?

Speaker 2 (28:37):
Okay? So?

Speaker 3 (28:39):
What?

Speaker 2 (28:39):
Okay? What is driving that line of thinking? Then it's
is it a body clock thing? Do you think the
best of USC is unable to overcome lethargy because of
travel and start time in the Midwest? The weather's supposed
to be good, by the way, about eighty degrees a
kick off. Yeah, I think big noon's going to be there,
so there's going to be energy there. So it's not
like USC is going to overlook this. It's certainly a

(29:02):
letdown slash bounce back spot for Illinois after being thoroughly
pantsed and spanked around by Indiana on the road last week. Brutal.
But as we like to say, you're not who you
are on your best day. You're not who you are
on your worst day. And so what is your line
of thinking that Illinois is a team that can keep
this close?

Speaker 1 (29:18):
First Off, never underestimate the effects of that bodyclock. Okay,
brought that one out of retirement just for the body clock. Secondly,
never underestimate a veteran team that feels like it is
in a desperate place after getting annihilated the week prior,
and also never underestimate the fact that it's still I

(29:40):
think a pretty good team playing at home last week
got out of hand. It was not good. This is
going to be a really interesting test, I think for
USC's offense and defense. On offense, because Illinois blitzes a
lot more than anybody USC has played so far. They
blitz about one out of every two dropbacks. So they're
going to try to dial up pressure and that worked well,
it didn't work at all last week. Let's see how

(30:01):
it works this week. Yeah, if nothing more, it'll be
a change as compared to what Jade Mayava has seen
so far. USC, by the way, has been the least
blitz team in college football, So they're going to see
a little bit more pressure, or at least attempted pressure.
Let's see how they handle that. And I think it's
also an interesting test for their defense because it's a
better team on the road, and the defense, frankly, has

(30:24):
been the thing that everybody is focused on when you
talk about USC. At least in the preseason, they've looked
really good. I am sort of a converted USC believer
at this point, based on what I've been seeing just
going back and watching these games. But this is another
test again on the road against a team that has
a lot of veteran leadership and I think is a
little bit desperate. So let's see what they're made of.

(30:46):
I think the game plan here is probably if you're Illinois,
to force a couple mistakes by bringing pressure, by slowing
the game down, try to keep the Trojan offense off
the field and make it ugly. And we know that
Brett Bielma can play that style of foot ball if
he wants to, and I didn't last week, but that
is I think what's going to work if you're gonna
try and beat USC. I don't think they beat USC.

(31:08):
I really don't, but I do think that this is
closer than the seven points thirty four to thirty one,
somewhere in that number for me.

Speaker 2 (31:18):
Also, something on your side is Lincoln Riley since arriving
at USC. Take this with whatever size grain of salt
you'd like, is three and ten as a road favorite
against the spread against the spread, so not out against
not outright against the spread. He is three and ten
with USC. Obviously, each season is a different team is

(31:39):
different context. Also, The context with this week with USC
is the status of their starting left tackle and their
best big play receiver both very much up in the air,
Jacoby Lane and Elijah Page. Jacoby Lane did not play
last week against Michigan State. Elijah Page got hurt, so
they're a little bit thin there. Conversely, Illinois super thin

(32:01):
in their secondary. They are very beat up there, and
so I think there is something to considering the body
clock in a spot like this. I think there is
ultimately reason to think this is kind of close and
competitive for a good amount of time because of that.
But I think USC does pour it on a little
bit late, or at least turns enough on late, because

(32:21):
I don't think Illinois against USC and Michigan State scored
thirty one, this was legitimately a game late. You know,
Jada Mayava had a terrific scramble to extend a drive
that looked like he was gonna get sacked for a
loss and get it back to Michigan State. Obviously, Spartans
couldn't make that play, and you know, Michigan State's defense
is not very good at the moment. Illinois defense may

(32:43):
not be all that good in this moment, and so
the way you beat USC, hypothetically, I think is going
directly at them on the ground. And I just don't
think Illinois right now can be trusted to do that.
And I don't think they can get to like something,
we're thirty five points something like that. I think it's
going to take to beat USC for most of these

(33:03):
teams this year. So I'm gonna say USC maybe backdoor,
but I'm gonna say it's a cover. They win by
ten or thirteen points at Illinois. Maybe it's you know,
a three point game in the fourth quarter and they
just open it up.

Speaker 1 (33:15):
I went back US win this one a lot. I
really did, because I like USC more than I expected,
and I'm just about ready to admit that I was
completely wrong, as I've been about a couple teams.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
This is a growth moment though, by the way it is,
this is a game USC has lost right that, like
it's on the road, it's against inferior team or a
team that is licking wounds. Is a team that you know,
is looking for ways to find a spark. You know.
Maybe the most dependable receiver in this game is Hank Baty.
He's been great for Illinois, but I don't see Illinois

(33:49):
having the dudes at present on offense. That really should
scare USC. So even with USC being beat up, we'll
see how that affects the offensive rhythm. I have been
winning the by ten or thirteen.

Speaker 1 (34:02):
Also at high noon on ABC number twenty two, your
Notre Dame fighting Irish Sure on the road against Arkansas.
This line has taken a newsedive Dan Rubinstein. It is
currently Notre Dame minus four. I believe in the preseason

(34:23):
when you could get some of those advanced lines, this
one was up there around thirteen fourteen points, somewhere in
that neighborhood. When the line broke earlier in the week,
it was higher. It has very progressively gone down.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
I've seen yeah, four and three and a half at
some places.

Speaker 1 (34:40):
Yeah, that line is racing in the direction of the Hogs,
and it makes a lot of sense. If you have
watched Notre Dame as I have, as many have, just
by applying some critical thought, you can understand why this
line is where it's at, and it's because of the
Notre Dame defense. The Notre Dame defense has been a

(35:02):
train wreck so far this season. Arkansas has had this
game circled for well over a year, they will be hungry.
I think they will be able to move the ball.
I think Taylor Green is going to be a problem,
and I don't know that Notre Dame has a good
answer for him. Honestly, I think the biggest issue for
Arkansas in this game is not beating themselves, because the Hogs,

(35:26):
as you know, as anyone who watches this team knows,
they are not that far away from being four and
zero right now. They had close losses. It very easily
could have been close wins. So for me, as the
Notre Damer among us, I look at this game and
I am terrified. I love Notre Dame's offense. I think
their offense is going to go to warp speed. I

(35:46):
think they're going to put up a ton of points here.
I have no idea if they can stop Arkansas and
tailing Green.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
Man. I wish Arkansas had a little bit more of
a heartbeat on their own defense here. I'm gonna take
the points just because I think you're talking situationally, bringing
what could be one of the most disappointing pass defenses
in America on the road against a good quarterback, a
good offensive coordinator. You know, I still think these types

(36:16):
of games are one in the trenches and run, you know,
one doing the little things, which obviously Arkansas has struggled with.
Arkansas was right there with Ole Miss I believe on
the road. That game was in Oxford, I believe, and
certainly the Memphis game was not only in their grass,
but it was given away. I'm gonna take the points here.
I'm gonna take the points because I think it's going

(36:37):
to go back and forth. I think Notre Dame, we think,
we believe their offense should be pretty explosive this year.
You don't want to say, like, Okay, well they have
it all figured out after that game against Purdue, but
against Texas A and M they look really sharp at
times on offense as well. I'm going to go with
Arkansas here in a wild game. I think it's gonna

(36:57):
be wild because the usual things that Notre Dame can
depend on to win these types of games cannot be
depended on, and so Notre Dame is now in the
process of learning how to win in new ways, which
I think it's gonna be a pretty frenzied atmosphere. Believing
in Arkansas to win a big game is certainly a choice,
That's what I'm making.

Speaker 1 (37:16):
That's a choice unto itself. But yeah, sure, point taken.
It's a weird sport. Arkansas is the most college football
college football team. So I'm gonna go with Arkansas to
have an outright win against Notre Dame in a very
chaotic Fadeville environment. I'm also taking Arkansas outright.

Speaker 2 (37:37):
Okay, but you can't be trusted you try to reverse Jinks.
You've all these not a reverse Jinks games you play.
I do have these games that I play. This is
not one of those times I thought about locking up Arkansas.
I'm not going to do that because that it'll really
look like I'm trying to do a reverse Jinks.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
But look, I feel great about the over. The over
is sixty four and a half. I don't know how
high they can make it, but I know, having watched
Notre Dame's defense, that it has not gotten particularly better,
and they've had opportunities. I mean, Purdue scoring thirty points.
Purdue is plucky, and I think Purdue might end up

(38:13):
being better. They can't be any worse than they were
a year ago.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
Yeah, you shouldn't.

Speaker 1 (38:17):
Score thirty points against Notre Dame against his defense. You
kidding me? Agree, you score forty one or forty points
I guess against Texas A and M. If you had
told me that two years ago that you would score
that at home against one of the better teams in
the country and you'd still lose, I would say, you're crazy.
This defense is not good right now. And I know

(38:37):
Marcus Freeman talked a good game in his press conference
and said that they had an uncomfortable meeting earlier this
week talking amongst the defensive staff, you know, again emphasizes
this thing about players needing to execute and whatnot. I mean,
they all kind of say the same thing at this point, right,
But whatever is going on, I tend to think it's

(38:57):
more of a scheme thing to my untrained eye. Clearly
they've got a lot of talent on hand. It just
seems like there's confusion back there, especially in the past defense.

Speaker 2 (39:08):
So give me Arkansas out right. Yeah, I'm going to
Arkansas out right again. It's a choice, it's a choice, choice,
it's a choice.

Speaker 1 (39:16):
But Arkansas, by the way, also, I think a team,
at least a coaching staff Sam Pittman has to feel
like his back's against the wall too.

Speaker 2 (39:24):
This would be a signature win. I don't know how
long even if they were to win. Obviously, the schedule
gets continues to be very much real for the Hogs.
By the way, something working in Notre Dame's favor is
the kickoff time here twelve o'clock. You know, it's it's
not the same as a three point thirty. Been tailgating
all day, been tailgating six seven hours.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
I know.

Speaker 2 (39:42):
Obviously the diehard Arkansas fans are gonna be tailgating for
a while, even for a noon kick. It's not a
night game. It's not something that's you know, you don't
have the potential energy of a stadium waiting all day.
So there is something that can be a little bit
sleepy about a noon kick for a big game, depending
on the place, depending on the situation. I still think
it's gonna be a crazy crowd, but I just don't

(40:03):
think it's it would be the fever pitch of a
three point thirty or a seven to fifteen.

Speaker 1 (40:08):
No. No, if you play college fantasy football, which I do,
not pick tailing Green this week. Okay, okay, just take
tailoring Green. He's gonna have a field day. He's got
out right. They don't have an answer for him. They
really don't. They can't get to the quarterback, and even
if they could, guys are open down the field. So
just take tailing Green, don't even think twice about it.

(40:29):
Three point thirty on Peacock. Indiana, fresh off their fifty
three point win against Illinois, now on the road, squaring
off against Iowa. They are a seven point road favorite.
Is there a letdown effect a week after that big game?

Speaker 2 (40:47):
Dan, it's also let down look ahead? By the way,
they have Oregon next. They have Oregon next. That's right,
that's it's a bye week and then Oregon. But yeah,
that's their next opponent.

Speaker 1 (40:55):
Perhaps it's an Iowa defense that can offer a little
bit more than what we saw a week ago. Perhaps
it's an Iowa offense that feels like they have finally
figured out the Mark Kronowski formula a week after getting
three touchdowns from him on the ground on the road
on a Friday night against Rutgers. So is there any
kind of Iowa steam here that we should subscribe to?

Speaker 2 (41:18):
Yeah, there is Iowa steam here, and it stinks to
high happen the steam. So I'm going to take Indiana
lock of the Week, Lock of the week.

Speaker 1 (41:25):
Lock of the week, Wow, Lock of the week.

Speaker 2 (41:32):
Here's my thinking here. Indiana blew out a lot of teams.
They didn't have letdown spots last year. I think they're
potentially better this year because of what Fernando Mendoz's ceiling is.
Is he the odds on Heisman favorite in this moment?
He is one of the top three or something. He's
got a fourteen.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
To zero touchdown to interception ratio, He's completed nearly seventy
seven percent of his passes. I mean, even if he
is as effective, he's still gonna be pretty good against
Iowa and show out in this game. And to the point, yeah,
they don't tend to let up against anybody. So this

(42:11):
is another opportunity for him against if nothing more, a
good defense on the road, to showcase what he can do.
But it's hard to look past Fernando Mendoza and what
he's done, and especially after getting to win a week ago.
There will be other opportunities, like if he goes and
plays really well against Oregon, right, I can't imagine that
his odds wouldn't drop considerably.

Speaker 2 (42:31):
So before the injury, John Mattier was the odds on
favorite then Mendoza, then a tie between Carson Beck and
Dante More, then Gunner Stockton, then a tie between Garrett
nus Meyer, Joey Aguilar, Marcel Reed, Josh Hoover, rounding out
the top five odds.

Speaker 1 (42:48):
Man get in on Gunner Stockton now before the Obama game.
If you believe as we do in Georgia.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
That's true, stock up, stop up.

Speaker 1 (42:55):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
They're my lock of the week because one they don't
they don't take their foot off the pa. They're locked in.
They seem precise, they seem crisp as a program. I'm
not a believer in Iowa's defense being where it's been.
This version of Iowa's defense, all due respect to Rutgers
and Nathan calliac mannis lit him up. Last week was
it didn't play scared that Iowa's defense is going to

(43:18):
stifle anything. And as somebody who is not currently a
believer in Mark Gronowski, if I'm going to say to myself,
the passing game, because this is running ability, is good,
but the passing game for Iowa right now is a
huge disappointment. And I have a blood in the water

(43:38):
feeling about this passing offense. I think Indiana is the shark,
right that, like, you can't bring that kind of weakness,
you can't bring that kind of odor, that kind of
smell to a game like this, even though it's at Iowa,
and Iowa was good there and traditionally have been very
good there in these spots where they can make a

(44:00):
game feel like quicksand I just don't think that's this year,
is Iowa team, And so I'm gonna go with Indiana
to one, you know, thirty five thirteen, something like that.
I like the cut of your jib dan.

Speaker 3 (44:14):
Lock, double lock, double barrel lock of the week.

Speaker 1 (44:21):
I am with you on all points and then some
I've got this jotted down as something like thirty one
to fourteen Indiana. I just don't see it. I don't
know how Iowa scores enough points to win this game.
I don't know how they score enough points to cover
this game. It's one thing to put up thirty eight
against a Rutgers defense that stinks, it's a whole thing

(44:41):
all together, whole other thing all together. To do it
against an Indiana defense that right now is playing like
they're a top ten unit in the country. And even
if they are starting to figure out the formula and
how best to use Mark Ronowski. As you said, it's
mostly on the ground, yep. I mean, it's just we've
seen him throw the ball, so I don't see how

(45:02):
it's happening. I don't see how it's happening. I am
excited to see Fernanda Mendozo and what he does against
an Iowa defense that I think is going to be
doze on. You know, most of the defenses he's played
this year at a minimum yep. And certainly they're on
the road in Iowa, which is going to make it
a little bit tougher.

Speaker 2 (45:18):
I did see, and I think I feel even better
about this now is Elijah Sarrat now has a signature
pizza at a local pizzeria in Bloomington. I believe great
and it features hold on Elijah sorrat serratcha.

Speaker 1 (45:34):
Oh okay, it's a little cloist. It's dial will be
something that I would do.

Speaker 2 (45:40):
I love it. And yes, it does have a very
familiar hilden Brand ring to it, so.

Speaker 1 (45:44):
I might have to steal that. Actually, it's pretty good.
It's not bad, so we agree. Oh man, bad news
for you. Double Locke three thirty CBS, number one, Ohio
State on the road an eight and a half point
favorite going to Uski Stadium to square off against Washington.
So this is one of those games that we talked

(46:07):
about a lot when we did our previews. This line
has also gone down. It is now down to eight
and a half. I have seen some speculation that it
could go all the way down to like seven. So
there is a lot of steam on Washington, maybe not
to win outright, but to keep this one close at
home with Ohio State coming to town. Where are you

(46:30):
at here?

Speaker 2 (46:31):
I went back and forth. We don't have a full
concept in either one of these teams. We have a
full concept on most of these teams. Home Field advantage
absolutely for Washington here, definitely. They had a nice run
at all. They beat Michigan with a big spot, with
a lot of energy last year. Obviously last year's Michigan
team was not a super special, but they're going to

(46:53):
have the place rocking. What time is kickoff three to
thirty Eastern three thirty, so a little bit of time
to get a little sauced and get the energy in
that stadium and Husky Stadium right there on the lake.
Washington was in a full on game against a maybe
average Wazoo team and it was thirty one to twenty four,
relatively late, like in the shadow of the fourth quarter.
They finished strong. You should credit teams for finishing strong,

(47:18):
but that was a game and their defense was not.
It was not an incredible day for Washington's defense on
the road in Pullman in a rivalry game at Wazoo.
But the offense this year has been basically NonStop electric.
Jan of Coleman's been really good, Denzel Boston's been really good.
DeMont Williams has been a great dual threat for them

(47:39):
against some pretty subpar defenses. Ye, they've performed like three
bad teams so far, but they performed like a great
offense should given playing what UC Davis, Colorado State in
Washington State, and so that's good. I appreciate that. Doesn't
mean that this is going to indicate future results. I
think Ohio State's defense is probably really really good, gonna

(48:00):
limit Washington a lot more than they've been limited. That's
not a crazy thing to say. I'm not crazy about
Ohio State on the ground this year thus far, though
they've been rotating in some younger guys and getting some
good results. They didn't blow Ohio out for the entirety
of that game. Ohio could be full of though Ohio
could be fair. I was looking at Ohio this week
against Bowling Green. I don't know what the points spreads at,

(48:21):
but I was thinking a bet in that too, because
Ohio's been full on good. They look like their offense
is really really legit. Will they be West Virginia early
on Parker Navarro?

Speaker 3 (48:34):
So?

Speaker 2 (48:35):
I think Ohio State obviously have the clear strengths of
their passing game. Julian Sane has been very accurate, though
he made a couple of mistakes against Ohio. Think Ohio
State wins this game. I see a lot of people
looking at great value for Ohio State, like blowing the
doors off of Washington. That Washington's value is a little
bit overinflated here. I don't know, man. I think this

(48:57):
is a tough emotional spot on the lake and Ohio
State is just they're working in so much new I
think the big thing and I saw this, I think
it was eleven Warriors. I want to credit where it's due.
The fascinating match up here will be Avrol Reese, the
linebacker for Ohio State, spying demand Williams. Yes, right, how
much of a playmaker can demand Williams be? And I

(49:19):
also worry in terms of the potential for Washington winning
this game. I think there's a pretty steep falloff after
the number one receiver. I don't think there is obvious
spreading the ball around game changing ability, and I just
think you need to have that to beat a team
like Ohio State. So I'm going to take Washington to

(49:40):
cover Ohio State to win, and I'm going to say
thirty to twenty one, thirty to eighteen something. Well, I
guess thirty to eighteen would have an Ohio State cover.

Speaker 1 (49:52):
Mass Solder Dan Rubinstein over there, Yeah, thirty to twenty four.

Speaker 2 (49:55):
Write it down. The math checks out.

Speaker 1 (49:57):
I've got thirty one to twenty four. Actually, okay, I
think a little bit of a backdoor cover situation here.

Speaker 2 (50:04):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (50:05):
The thing that you should have mentioned that you didn't
is that this is also Julian Sayin's first road start,
also true first road start, and it'll be in Husky Stadium.

Speaker 2 (50:14):
Which is very high rest advantage though right.

Speaker 1 (50:17):
And very loud. There is a rest advantage. They were
last week. They've had plenty of opportunity here to get
ready for this one. But look, I'm going to harken
back to what I said during the previews, and I
believe it now more than ever. Washington is the white
knuckle team of the Big Ten. They may not go
out there and win nine games, they may not even
get to seven. I don't know, but I think they're

(50:37):
going to be a tough out through and through.

Speaker 2 (50:40):
I think they're a good team.

Speaker 1 (50:41):
Yeah, I think they are a good team. And I
really like this team a lot when I previewed them
earlier in the year. So for me, this is an
opportunity to see what they're made of, as Ohio State
is for everybody. It's a perfect test to see where
you rank or you rank relative to the field.

Speaker 2 (51:00):
Thirty one twenty four.

Speaker 1 (51:01):
I think it's mostly Ohio State. I think they mostly
keep Washington at arms length. But I think it's cool
just for a while, and I think there's a backdoor cover.

Speaker 2 (51:10):
By the way, Washington's schedule is looking pretty tasty in
this moment. It is so after Ohio State. Yeah, it's
at Maryland. We'll see what Maryland is. But they're four
to zero at this moment. It is September, and that
is a big key from Maryland. Yeah, they have Rutgers
at home, which should be I mean, it's a revenge
spot for Washington, and the Rutgers defense has been pretty

(51:30):
atrocious this year. An unfinished but one hundred percent good
and challenging Michigan on the road is going to be
very tough, a more flawed than perhaps America thought. Illinois
at home, a Wisconsin team who is teetering on the edge.
Purdue very much the start of a work in progress.
Ucla is starting over and they do finish the Oregon though.
That game is in Seattle, so it's pretty tasty.

Speaker 1 (51:53):
Another game that we agree on.

Speaker 2 (51:54):
This is bad news for you, Dan, I know, well,
it's Sauerkraut Saturday, Colon load up on the doll Pree
thirty ESPN.

Speaker 1 (52:04):
Auburn on the road at number nine Texas A and M.
A and M favored by six and one half points.
You may recall this game from a year ago. A
and M one forty three to forty one. I believe
in Auburn in quadruple.

Speaker 2 (52:17):
Overtime, Dan ruthe wild one yep.

Speaker 1 (52:20):
Obviously, we paid a lot of attention to what Oklahoma
did last week. Ten sacks against Auburn.

Speaker 2 (52:26):
Ten.

Speaker 1 (52:27):
That was a number, right.

Speaker 2 (52:28):
Ten sounds right.

Speaker 1 (52:30):
Some of the big plays also went Oklahoma's way. The
SEC has said that maybe some of them shouldn't have,
but sooners have gotten a lot of love here. Auburn
also a ton of penalties, thirteen of them. They only
went three of fifteen on third downs. They didn't even
eclipse three hundred yards. But all that being said, they

(52:51):
did muddy it up enough to keep it close. It
was not a clean game by any stretch, but they
also did not get blown out, and I think if
a few breaks go their way, we could be talking
about a different outcome. Now.

Speaker 2 (53:04):
If I had.

Speaker 1 (53:05):
Wheels, I'd be a bicycle.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (53:08):
All I'm saying is that the margin between Auburn and
I think a presumed a can Census top ten team,
to me seemed to be very slim. Yeah. My fear
for Auburn fans is that this is going to be
another year trapped in that limbo, because the big issue

(53:28):
in twenty twenty four was a lot of dumb situations
not converting production into wins, and it was maddening. It
was maddening to watch, and I have no connection to Auburn.
It was maddening. I can only imagine what it must
feel like to root for that team and know that
each week is going to be exactly the same. Now,
earlier this year, they did convert one of those dumb

(53:51):
situations or one of those tricky situations against Auburn into
a win. That was a great way to start the season.
I think that win will hold up in time. Last
week was close, couldn't get it done. I think this
week figures to be close. I looked at the projections
for Auburn's remaining eight games. Seven of the eight games
also project as being close. If you are an Auburn fan,

(54:15):
it is going to be more of the same moving forward.
And so the question is in a game like this,
in the games like they've got coming up, what is
it going to take to get them over that hump?
And can they get over that hump consistently? Because they
do have enough talent, especially on defense, they have enough
talent to keep these games close and to put themselves

(54:36):
in a position to win. It is a tall order
to go to Kyle Field and do it. How are
we feeling about this game?

Speaker 2 (54:43):
So it's rest advantage A and M. They've had to
buy after the Notre Dame game, and this is the
second straight road game for Auburn. Auburn has sort of
shown their winning formula is defensive stops and running the ball,
and A and M does not have or has not
shown themselves to have a defense this year. Obviously, Notre
Dame had a ton of success. Sure, they weren't consistently

(55:05):
dominant even before the Notre Dame game. I just think
the more we've seen Auburn against quality opponents, which right
now we've seen them against Baylor and Oklahoma, the more
there seems to be a formula. Here's like Mike Jackson
Arnold beat You make the offensive line protect Jackson Arnold,
make him go through his progressions, or make him take
shots downfield, and hopefully the couple very good receivers win

(55:29):
fifty to fifty balls are able to get loose somehow,
some way, and if they're able to do that, you know,
so be it. We can live with that. I think
Mike Elko is a very smart coach. I think having
the advantage of a bye week, having the ability to
self scout after the Notre Dame game and fix things
on defense is going to be nice for text saying M,

(55:51):
it's why you said three thirty Eastern kick. Yes, I
just I can't find reasons to feel good about Auburn here,
especially after last week, even though they were competitive in
that game and they put themselves in position to win.
I'm going to take Texas A and M here thirty
three to twenty.

Speaker 1 (56:10):
I'm on A and M thirty four to twenty nine.

Speaker 2 (56:14):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (56:15):
I think Auburn continues the trend of hanging around and
not winning, and I do think the formula of making
Jackson Arnold beat you will be more successful than not
over the course of the year. He is eighty seventh,
by the way, in that PFF grade that I talked
about earlier, two spots behind Drew Aller. So though there

(56:38):
have been some moments, and though he's clearly a very
gifted runner when he has the football, if you can
cut off that part of his game and make him
beat you through the air, it's not quite as effective.
And I think A and M is good enough to
do that. If nothing more, they're good enough to do that.
They're good enough to win this game at home. I
think it's close, though, and I think it's thirty four

(56:59):
to twenty nine. I think it's one of those deals
where you like, go for too late to try and
make it a field goal and you don't get it
right and wins thirty four to twenty nine. So they win,
but they do not cover at home. Agree next game,
let's go to some under the radar games. You're cool
with that, love to.

Speaker 2 (57:17):
Just a few to keep on the radar.

Speaker 1 (57:19):
Maybe not ones we're talking about here as headliners, but
I've got a handful.

Speaker 2 (57:23):
You've got a handful.

Speaker 1 (57:24):
I've actually got a bunch here that we can go
through rapid fire, high new ESPN Georgia Tech on the
road at wake Forest. This is another point spread that
I believe has jumped around a little bit. Yeah, I'm
taking points here. Anytime I get Wake at home as
a pretty big home dog, I'm gonna go Wake because
I am just waiting to see who they upset. This

(57:46):
to me strikes me as a team that is gonna
be plucky as hell. They are clearly not buttoned up
nor a finished product, but they're gonna play teams hard
with their new coach who brought new energy. I'm going
Wake Forest plus the points here. I think Georgia Tech wins,
but I could see this one being closer than expected.

Speaker 2 (58:04):
Absolutely agree. And if your starting point is a rest
advantage at home and Wake has you know against they
beat NC State but or lost to NC State, but
they were up on NC State early. If you've been
good against the run and you have a rest advantage
against Georgia Tech, I think you can hang around just
long enough. And you said this was an early one
twelve o'clock, Yeah, I think you could have a little

(58:25):
bit of just lulling them a little bit. I think
I think they can moyer them. Jamie moyer them right
into a weird twenty three to seventeen win for Georgia Tech.

Speaker 1 (58:37):
But I have wait covering just a bunch of off
speed stuff and yeah, seventy eight mile an hour circle
changes on the outfits.

Speaker 2 (58:43):
Some corners like take advantage that you know Haines King
had an incomplete pass some third and seven that was
open but he just missed. Yeah. Wake Forest hangs around
and loses relatively close. High newon ESPN two. Louisville Lovo
on the pitt.

Speaker 1 (59:01):
Louisville favored by four and a half points. A lot
of home dogs here. If you are ever so inclined.
I am officially off of the pit wagon at this point.

Speaker 2 (59:09):
Okay, which is why I'm back on continue.

Speaker 1 (59:13):
I just I want to forget that the preseason predictions
ever happened, because to me, they do not look well coached.
They I've watched all of the PIT games. Now I've
gone back, I've rewatched. I cannot believe my eyes. I
do not think they look well coached. I have seen enough.
I am laying the points. I am going with Louisville

(59:33):
on the road.

Speaker 2 (59:35):
I'm going to give the points. Excuse me, I'm gonna
take the points. Home dog, Pitt home dog of the week.

Speaker 1 (59:41):
By oh my god, are you kidding me? Kidding me
with this?

Speaker 2 (59:45):
Not at all?

Speaker 1 (59:45):
Come on, don't make me play the sound against No.
Why give me a reason why? Because I just said
that they were my home dog of the week.

Speaker 2 (59:54):
I need the reason why they're your home dog of
the week. What is Louisville done this year that has
impressed you so much that they should be favored on
the road. Pitt had a bye week. Last week, they
lose a rivalry game. It was a chaotic game that
they had the opportunity to win. I don't think West
Virginia is especially good this season, but it's early on
in the season, and I think the Pit defense, which

(01:00:17):
has been very very good. Say what you will about
Pit overall, they've been very very good pressuring the quarterback.
They get Miller Moss in a road spot. Give me
the Pit Panthers here, fine, hometome.

Speaker 1 (01:00:30):
The Yokos home dog of the week. I can't believe
I'm off of Pitt and now you're on them.

Speaker 2 (01:00:37):
Do they have at least, at the very least so
they stop the run? Pitt does right, Sure, they stopped
the run. The defense has been at the very least
pretty good. They pressure the quarterback. Their defensive line has
been very good this season. They're number one in the
country and pressure rate. So you're giving me a home
dog who gets after the quarterback. I have watched the

(01:01:01):
team play. I was very disappointed to see the manner
in which they lost the West Virginia game. But can't
It doesn't define them. It does not define them. That's
a road rivalry spot they can improve. They had the
bye week. I'm taking pics. I'm out, It's fine, have fun,
I'm out. Did you watch did you watch Miller Moss
on the road last season. You're like, that's my guy.

Speaker 1 (01:01:19):
Three thirty Fox Utah on the road at West Virginia.
West Virginia is a home dog of thirteen and one
half points. Dan, Yeah, I think Utah is going to
bounce back and blow them out.

Speaker 2 (01:01:31):
I'm waiting taking West Virginia. I'm taking West Virginiak too
many points too. So they didn't they didn't look at
it against Kansas obviously, So this is Utah flying across
the country. This is continued discussion about Devin dan Pierre's health. Yeah,
he can't throw, really like he has not been a
good throwing quarterback this season. Is that fair to say?

(01:01:53):
I mean they've been a terrific rushing team. He was
not last week. He looked terrible last week. I just
think it's too many points. I think Utah wins this game.
It's two many points.

Speaker 1 (01:02:01):
Four fifteen sec. Network number fifteen. Tennessee on the road
at Mississippi State. Mississippi State off to a nice start. Yeah,
they are a seven point home dog, Dan, you got.

Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
I have Mississippi State. So here's what you have to do.
If you are going to say that this is a
home dog week. If you're going to say that you
like Mississippi State, you have to convince yourself that this
is a different situation than where they were last season,
that they have improved, and that they're healthier obviously blake
shape and missed the majority of last season, and that
this is going to be a tough road spot for Tennessee.

(01:02:32):
I think Tennessee is going to pull this out. I
think they have more ways to win. But Tennessee's defense
hasn't been anywhere near as good as we thought they'd
be this season. We thought they would be led by
their defense. I'm wrong. I'm just telling you right now.
I think their defense can get better, but they were
sort of abused against Georgia. So I'm going to take
Mississippi State here in a difficult place to play, to

(01:02:54):
cover this spread against Tennessee. I love what Tennessee can
be long term this season, but I think Mississippi State
also has Maybe this, maybe I should have changed my
Saturday nickname. Does Mississippi State also have a rest advantage? No,
they played at IU, excuse me, and it wasn't particularly pretty.
I grant you that they played at IU, but they're

(01:03:14):
at home. I'm gonna go with another home dog here.

Speaker 1 (01:03:17):
I like Tennessee. I like Tennessee. Tennessee's going into a
bye week. It's not a letdown, it's not a look ahead.

Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
And I agree.

Speaker 1 (01:03:24):
I think there's a bit of a tendency to overvalue
Mississippi State because they're a good story. So for me,
I hear you seven points right now, I think seven
points is an okay number.

Speaker 3 (01:03:33):
There.

Speaker 1 (01:03:34):
Give me Tennessee minus whatever. Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
It almost feel if you really like Tennessee and you
like Tennessee minus whatever, that's a low number.

Speaker 1 (01:03:42):
It is a low number, and I do like Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (01:03:44):
I thought, I think Misissippi States. I think they've performed
solidly enough at home that I feel good about that atmosphere.
Seven pm.

Speaker 1 (01:03:51):
ESPN Arizona on the road at Iowa State. This is
a very interesting matchup. Agree, Iowa State is only favored
by a six points. It's here at home. You and
I have been talking on the sly about Arizona.

Speaker 2 (01:04:06):
I just I'm wish casting here and a lot of
I texted Bill Connolly about this. I was like, I
just don't look now. Danny Gonzalez at three three five
San Diego State DNA. They're running the ball, They've played nobody.
They held down Avery Johnson, which makes them every team
I don't know I wanted for Arizona. They've had some
dark years and lost their coach a couple of years ago.

Speaker 1 (01:04:28):
I'm going to stick with Iowa State in this one. Yeah,
I don't like the fact that it's in Aims at night,
a veteran team in Iowa State that said Ioa State.
It's not exactly been blowing teams out.

Speaker 2 (01:04:43):
No disappointing game against Arkansas State that came down to
it that was like a seventeen sixteen or something like
that very late.

Speaker 1 (01:04:50):
So I understand the logic for Arizona here, but I
just like the fact that it's at home at night.
Iowa State has a veteran leadership, and given the state
eight of the Big twelve, honestly, Iowa State's got to
feel like they're inside track to get to the conference
championship game, if not more so. I like them in
the spot a lot. Although I do like what we've

(01:05:11):
seen out of Arizona. It does seem like Brent Brendan
has turned the tide a little bit and this is
a much better team than we expected. But let's go clones.

Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
So I think the difference in this game is going
to be whichever quarterback has the announcers say something like
what was he thinking? Throwing it there less fewer times,
because ultimately no fa Fida has not had a good year.
He has not had a good season. Last season, he
has dropped off unfortunately. The best of him is quite fun.

(01:05:39):
But the idea of Noah Fafida going to Ames throwing
into this defense at night, yes, yep, yep, has me
a little bit too scared. If Arizona is indeed a
good rushing team, which they've looked excellent on the ground
so far, I always say it hasn't defended the run
all that well. But what reason has Arizona given you
to not load the bus thus far? And so if

(01:06:02):
I would say loads the box and forrest is noaa
Vetnam to throw into the teeth of his defense, I
just don't trust it. So I'm going I Aowa stayed
here to win this one. Relatively low scoring twenty to
thirteen by you on the road at Colorado Dan. They're
playing this one at ten to fifteen Eastern time. It's
on ESPN BYUA six and one half point road favorite.

(01:06:24):
They are currently three to zero. They smoked Portland State,
they beat Stanford by a twenty seven to three score,
and they most recently went across the country and took
it to East Carolina by a thirty four to thirteen score.
Now they're on the road at Colorado this line six

(01:06:45):
and a half. I've had listeners dogging me for undervaluing
BYU always and forever, which is probably true. Sure, so
I'm gonna go BYU again here. I'm gonna trust what
the folks have told me that I'm undervaluing the Koogs.
Let's go BYU. I'm gonna go BYU as well. It's
a late kick. It's especially late kick. It's what ten

(01:07:06):
to fifteen eastern? Yep, I'm trying to do the math here.
What is that mountain timete eight? Eight to fifteen. That's
still pretty late for a kickoff local. So I'm gonna
go BYU here. Obviously there's no altitude advantage for Colorado.
I'm never gonna screw that up again. By no way.
You can't BYU at altitude Colorado at altitude. Colorado just
hasn't done anything consistently well. They've played against two Power

(01:07:28):
Conference teams and lost both of those games. They haven't
played especially well this year. I like that they bounce
back against Wyoming, but you have to believe in something
that you haven't seen from the Buffs this year. If
we believe that Byu is at the very least quality,
is the very least pretty good, decent whatever, I'm just
not seeing it from Colorado right now.

Speaker 1 (01:07:47):
So I'm goon BYU three other really quick ones here
because we've got more to get to please Hi Noon,
Big ten Network. Rutgers at Minnesota. I bring this game
up for this reason. This is a weird stat that
I'm sure most people don't know about. I mentioned the
passer grades earlier. Yeah, among quarterbacks with a minimum of
fifty drop backs this season, the top graded PFF passer

(01:08:12):
is Ahan caliak manis great, and Drake Lindsay, for what
it's worth, from Minnesota is number six on that list,
ahead of Again, what's that? What is the stat? What
is the very specific stat? It's the PFF passer grade.

Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
Okay, we don't actually know what goes into it.

Speaker 1 (01:08:30):
Among quarterbacks with at least fifty dropbacks this season, Yeah, eighth,
and caliak manus number one. Drake Lindsay number six. Both
of those guys are ahead of Fernando Mendoza Dante More,
two guys who have gotten way more attention, So, you know,
for better teams. Yeah, I'm laying the points with Minnesota.
I do not trust the Rutgers defense right now. They're

(01:08:51):
favored by four and a half points.

Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
I don't know if I trust Drake Lindsay. Okay, I'm
gonna go Rutgers here. Darius Taylor is out, has been
out missed the there's no indication that he's gonna be
back this week or anytime soon. So I'm gonna go
with Rutgers here to win in a shootout and not
only cover this spread. Previously on Minnesota football, they lost
to Cal. Yes, No, I know. Going to the hinterlands

(01:09:16):
of the Bay Area is always difficult. It's difficult for
excellent teams for bad teams. Whatever. They didn't lose Col
by three. They lost to a true freshman quarterback by
thirteen fourteen points. Right before Cal lost and got shut
out by San Diego State. I don't know. Minnesota has
lost to Cal and kind of barely beat Buffalo. I'm

(01:09:37):
not sure what you're banking on. I know Minnesota finished
that game strongly, but it was not a demonstrative win
over the over the Bulls. So I'm gonna go with
Rutgers here because at least I know that they can
throw the ball well. I like the Minnesota defense. I
think I'm going Rutgers. Why not, I'm in.

Speaker 1 (01:09:52):
Acc network at noon, it's Duke at Syracuse. It's notable because, well,
we've got a quarterback situation at Syracuse after Steve Vangelley
went down. I guess we're gonna get to see Ricky
Collins here and Darry Mensa. Dari Mensa is very quietly
I think having a pretty good year for the Dukies.
They are favored by five and a half points on
the road in the JMA Wireless Dome. Dan, gimme Duke,

(01:10:17):
gimme Duke minus the number.

Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
This is interesting. Duke has one of the worst defenses
in America, at least past defenses in America, and they're
allowing two point seven points per drive, good for one
hundred and twenty first in the nation. That said, I
still think it's gonna be adjustment period for Syracuse. I'm gonna
take the points, but I think Cues wins.

Speaker 1 (01:10:38):
And last but not least here under the radar game
seven thirty FS one. I mentioned this one on the
Tuesday episode as well, but app State on the road
at Boise State Boise favored by fifteen and a half points.
That line has come down as more people have seen
what I have seen. That Boise State's defense stinks, and
I don't think App State's all that good. But I

(01:10:59):
just don't like what I have seen from Boisese defense.
I think they win at home. They're the better team
here for sure, but I am taking those sweet sweet
points plus the fifteen and a half for app State
on the road.

Speaker 2 (01:11:10):
Yeah, I don't love app State traveling across the country
for this one.

Speaker 1 (01:11:15):
I don't either. I don't either.

Speaker 2 (01:11:17):
I don't look and again, no altitude issue here. No
one is up over three thousand feet. Now we're going
to get that wrong again and Boise up a good amount.
So I'm going to take Boise State here to win
in a similar fashion to what they lost excuse me
to what they won in last week. So they beat
air Force by eighteen or nineteen points but gave up
a bunch of points. I have Boise State here winning

(01:11:40):
this one forty eight to twenty six.

Speaker 1 (01:11:42):
I like it. That'd be a fun game, all right. Yeah,
if you do have to go out and about, shame
on you. But if you do, and if you don't
have a choice, try to do it before four pm
Eastern time, because I think your ideal quad My.

Speaker 2 (01:11:58):
Question to you is how bad you really want place?

Speaker 1 (01:12:02):
If you want to be the quad Father, the time
to do it is in the afternoon, because you've got
four games at three point thirty that I think capture
the essence of week five. You've got LSU versus Ole
miss You've got Ohio State versus Washington, which could be fun,
Indiana versus Aisle, which I think is a really interesting
test really for both sides of this. And then of

(01:12:23):
course Auburn versus Texas A and M, which should be fun.
We previewed that one earlier. Those four games, you can
also sub in Utah against West Virginia, which, who knows,
if you believe Dan Rubinstein, could get a little bit
weird if you give it a little bit of time.
At four fifteen, you've got Tennessee versus Mississippi State, which
right now is only a seven point line. And then
also if you're really in it, for the deep cuts

(01:12:44):
Dan at four pm. You've got the Battle for I
twenty five, or if you prefer the real grand rivalry
between the New Mexico Lobos and the New Mexico State.
What is New Mexico State? Should I know? The Aggies?

Speaker 2 (01:12:57):
Thank you got a rivalry game.

Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
So whatever you're into, you can kind of sub you
can mix and match, you can make the quad whatever
you want it to be. But that is around the
time where I think you can get the most for
your money. If you're sitting in front of the TV.
If you got to go out, make sure you do
it early.

Speaker 2 (01:13:14):
This is a cider donut time, right, Yes, that's right.
You got those orchards out there, and PA going strong.

Speaker 1 (01:13:19):
We're gonna be driving through a bunch of them.

Speaker 2 (01:13:22):
I'm not really doing sweets right now, Ty, I'm trying
to watch you know this tight figure. We'll see what happens.
One quick last favorite tie. If you could drop that
big stanky, convulsing arching, sweaty drum and five for me
sweaty CONVULSI sweaty convulsing arching arching. That's a new one
for you. Like arch in a back.

Speaker 3 (01:13:48):
All along.

Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
Twelve pm.

Speaker 1 (01:13:53):
Georgetown at two and two on the road at Columbia,
Oh and one. We took Georgetown, Georgetown A wee could go.

Speaker 2 (01:14:01):
They got smoked, smoked.

Speaker 1 (01:14:04):
I like him this week on the road at Columbia.
You can need the Hoyas.

Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
I'm going Columbia. Big here, seventeen to three, twelve o'clock Penn.
On the road at Lehigh.

Speaker 1 (01:14:13):
They're driving a short ways up the northeast extension here,
Lee High. Four to zero at home, give me lee High.

Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
We might see the bus. We might see the bus
rolling out.

Speaker 1 (01:14:26):
You can see we could pass them. Yeah, I don't
know if they're coming.

Speaker 2 (01:14:29):
In the day before.

Speaker 1 (01:14:30):
There's really no reason to close.

Speaker 2 (01:14:31):
But well, you gotta focus. You gotta lock in. You
gotta get in that hotel. You gotta be together as
a team. You gotta lock in. I'm going Lehigh here,
thirty five to ten, one o'clock, the Battle of the
Goose Eggs. We've got holy Cross at zero to four,
Fordham at oh to four. Who you got, I'm going home?
Team here, give me Fordham here. It's gonna be ugly.
Ten to nine, ten to nine, I'm going holy Cross.

Speaker 1 (01:14:52):
What the hell?

Speaker 2 (01:14:53):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (01:14:53):
Two o'clock Howard at three and one on the road
at Richmond, scraping clawing, getting their way to two and
two first season in the pat League. Give me the Spiders,
why not.

Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
I'm going Spiders here.

Speaker 1 (01:15:05):
Three point thirty Princeton, oh and one on the road
at your at ours at Lafayette, the Leopards are three
and one, Dan, gimme the LEPs.

Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
I'm going Princeton here. I love Lafayette, but there is
something special. Princeton's been planning and circling this one on
the calendar for the better part of ten months. Go
Tigers here. It hurts me to say it, but I
don't think Lafayette has what it takes.

Speaker 1 (01:15:28):
And last, but not least, six pm Saint Francis, Oh
to four on the road at Bucknell two end two.
Can I tell you a heartwarming story? Dan, Please, let's
say praise please. As you know, I offended some in
the greater Williamsport area, a person, perhaps several people, Yeah,

(01:15:49):
perhaps in the Bucknell slash Williamsport area. One of those
gentlemen kindly emailed me this week, emailed us to say
that I have been forgiven yes, and I cannot tell you,
kind sir, how much that meant to me, Okay, I
am not kidding.

Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
I read that. My heart smiled.

Speaker 1 (01:16:10):
Thank you. I gotta take buck now now, man, I
gotta go with the Nellies and lie to that.

Speaker 2 (01:16:16):
All is forgiven? Wow, all is forgiven? Didn't see that coming.
All is forgiven? Now?

Speaker 1 (01:16:21):
He did say that I need to bet us American
dollars on Oregon in order to effectively do the reverse
thinks thing, the full reversal, which.

Speaker 2 (01:16:31):
I have not done yet.

Speaker 1 (01:16:33):
I'm waiting to see what the number is closer to
the game itself. But I am not against nor will
I turn up my nose at that idea. I would
like to see Penn State win, even though I did
pick Oregon, So.

Speaker 2 (01:16:47):
How am I? Thank you? Kin I'm not gonna wear
Oregon gear at the white out. Have you decided you're not?
What are you gonna wear?

Speaker 1 (01:16:54):
You're gonna wear white.

Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
I'm just gonna go neutral now. I'm not gonna wear white.
I'll go you know, a mint colored shirtless, vaguely green shirtless. Well,
during the day, I will be shirtless. That's how people
can spot me at the tailgates. I'm just trying to
figure out, just like the rhythm of the day on
Saturday as a visiting person rooting for the opposite Like

(01:17:18):
during the game, how do I behave myself? I'm old now.
I haven't been in like enemy territory in a long
time in this kind of environment. So like if Oregon
converts a key first down, do I fist pump or
do I, you know, come on, let's go, or do
I keep it under my breath? I don't want to raise,
you know, suspicions if I'm surrounded by hostile ty Hildenbrandt types.

Speaker 1 (01:17:42):
We will be surrounded by season ticket holders, Okay, in
our advanced age, I am pleased to say that our
seats will have backs on them. Oh it's killer, It's
so good. Okay, so we'll have the padded seat with
the back.

Speaker 2 (01:17:57):
Did you see James Franklin by the way sidebar was like,
I really need you guys to be loud, like, guys,
this is very important. Was a little worried.

Speaker 1 (01:18:04):
There was a little bit of please clap energy there, yeah,
which was not ideal. But I feel if the stadium
is going to be juiced up, they'll be ready for that.
For a night game in Beaver Stadium, they'll be ready.
Believe me. I think the tenor of the day is
a we got to figure out a recording situation and
presumably set up before we go up to the game.

(01:18:24):
But we have had more invitations to come to tailgates
than I could possibly imagine. I do need to create
this Google sheet and a Google map. Please do keep
them coming if you're going to be at the game,
we'd love to try and meet up if we can.

Speaker 2 (01:18:37):
We need to, We need food, we need to be hydrated.

Speaker 1 (01:18:39):
We need We got a bunch of tailgates that we're
going to go to. But soliverbo at gmail dot com,
please do not hesitate to reach out. Yeah, let us
know where you're going to be, when you're gonna be there,
and we'll do our part to stop buy with some goodies. Okay,
let's try to get up to the stadium nice and
early so that we have an opportunity to kind of
take it all in. If you do have a tailgate

(01:19:00):
that has a TV, presumably with a bunch of games
at already that we can watch all of TV, yeah,
we still have to try and do that. Let us
know in your invite. We would appreciate knowing so that
we know where to go. If we want to pay
attention to some of these games. But I'm going to
try and give you the full Penn State experience, both
the night before, give you a flavor for what college

(01:19:22):
avenue is like, and of course the day of. I
don't think you've ever really had that. I know you've
been to mis State, but you've never really had the
full experience. So I have not I can now provide
this for you. I'm very excited about it. With all
that being said, please do check us out at overballers
dot com. Get in on the game, compete for that
two hundred dollars gift card. If you are watching the games,

(01:19:44):
we are still going to cut a reverb segment, though
I don't know if we can play it eight five
or five herbal three. As you're watching games throughout the
course of the day, Shay is back in the saddle.
He's going to help us out great.

Speaker 2 (01:19:55):
And again, the plan right now.

Speaker 1 (01:19:57):
Is to do the live stream at midnight, but of
us a little bit of grace if it looks a
little bit different, if it sounds a little bit different,
if we don't get to as many games as usual.
I think we just want to be honest with the audience.
We're not going to be able to watch all these games,
at least not to the extent that we normally would, right,
So we will keep you up to speed with how
we plan to cover all of those games, whether that's

(01:20:20):
on Tuesday or if there is another episode that pops
up in between the Saturday live stream and the Tuesday
episode that we do every week. Make sure you're plugged
into all of our social media feeds as well as
the newsletter, as well as our Patreon whatever. We will
keep you abreast of that situation as best we can.
But I am thrilled to be doing this. Wo We

(01:20:41):
just do not go to games anymore.

Speaker 2 (01:20:43):
We have not gone it.

Speaker 1 (01:20:43):
We did go to one last year, but we rarely
get a chance to go to games because of the
recording schedule. And this is a special one because it's
your alma mater, it's my alma mater. It is a
solid verbowl in some sense. Yeah, and I get to
give you the full experience, which would be a lot
of fun.

Speaker 2 (01:21:00):
No brainer. Wherever you may be out there, enjoy your
week five. It is a biggie.

Speaker 1 (01:21:06):
Make sure you've got your affairs in order, You've got
a plan in place that you can get in front
of the TV and watch games throughout the course of
the weekend. Because it's gonna be a banger.

Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
Dan and I will be there.

Speaker 1 (01:21:16):
Make sure you plugged into our social feeds. We're gonna
be posting like crazy over the course of this weekend.
Let you know what we're up to, what the adventure
is like. I'm excited, this will be fun for that
guy over there, Dan, for myself, Tie, for everybody listening
at home. Thank you so much for downloading, for supporting,
for tagging along with what we do. We'll catch you

(01:21:37):
all on Saturday Night's day.

Speaker 2 (01:21:39):

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
