Speaker 1 (00:07):
There is breaking news from the Minnesota Vikings organization that
rookie Phenom at least in the Las Vegas Raiders preseason game,
JJ McCarthy needed some repair work. Some are saying surgery,
but it looks like it was an injection. Apparently there's

(00:27):
a difference, and he had swelling in his knee, So
the Minnesota Vikings felt like they needed to get things
taken care of. And the reason why I said surgery
or injection. The PFF Pro Football Talk website jj McCarthy
had a second knee surgery, and then Ben Gesling from
the Star Tribune goes source confirmed Kevin Severs ESPN report

(00:51):
that JJ McCarthy had a biological injection to deal with
intermittent swelling in his knee. No change to his recovery timeline.
And here's Kevin O'Connell. He said, he's really knocked it
out of the park every step of the way, and
as his rehab has picked up, we noticed a little
swelling in there. He's been doing everything we asked of him,

(01:13):
but just wanted to make sure that there was no
cause for concern and all reports were very positive. Ben Gessling,
Just to be clear, source said it was an injection
for McCarthy. No second surgery was needed. Now, I don't know,
I've never had a tormentiscus, and I don't know people
that have had torn meniscus say, maybe this is typical.

(01:36):
Maybe this is just a part of the process in
returning from a torn meniscus. But let me just say this,
the Minnesota Vikings organization, they aren't jumping for joy right
now because of Jaj McCarthy's need for an injection because
he had swelling in his knee. Maybe this is nothing

(01:56):
long term. Maybe this is nothing for the short term,
but it is something right now. They needed to go
in there send him in an injection. And when he
got the surgery, you know, back when he injured his knee,
a lot of the discussion was, Okay, is he just

(02:17):
going to get a repair or is he just going
to get it completely switched out? Because you know, if
he gets it repaired, well, he can come back in
like a few weeks, if he gets the entire thing
switched out. If he I don't know the difference of
it a repair, if it's a if it's you know,
I don't know the technical terms. But if he completely

(02:40):
redoes the entire the entire meniscus, which was really the
only option. Well, then it's going to be basically he's
out for the entire year, and you're looking at his
second season in the NFL as being his rookie season.
And I thought that with the complete switch up, the
complete repair, not just the band aid, that this kind

(03:04):
it kind of ignored or took out possibilities like this.
But maybe I just don't understand medical science. And it's true,
I don't understand medical science. I didn't go to school
to be a medical doctor. But in my mind, in
my common sense mind that I think I have, it
would make sense to me that you get the whole

(03:26):
thing repaired, you don't just put the band aid on it.
And when you get the whole thing repaired, well, then
there's less likely issues moving forward in terms of swelling,
in terms of you know, other issues that need to
be done with it, versus if you put a band
aid on it, well, then you bring up other possibilities
into play, like like damage, like like swelling. So maybe

(03:48):
this is concerning for the Minnesota Vikings going forward, but
or maybe it's not. But they're not jumping for joining
the organization today, they're not clapping hands and hear into
each other that JAJ McCarthy needed an injection in his
knee to figure out and to reduce the swelling that's

(04:11):
going on, and you apparently his recovery is going well,
Viking said. Coach was asked if JJ McCarthy will lose
ground in his rehab with the most recent injury, and
Kevin O'Connell mentioned that he is on the original timeline. Well,
I sure hope so, because the timeline is next training camp.
The timeline is OTA's next off season. There is no

(04:35):
timeline for jj McCarthy this season. There's no timeline to
get JAJ McCarthy back on the field this season. The
Vikings ruled him out when he got his surgery. They
put him on season ending. I r he can't come back.
So the fact that you know he's on the original timeline,
are you concerned about him coming back? No, of course
he's not, because he's still got six seven months, he's

(04:57):
still got nine ten until the start of next regular
season when you want him fully healthy and ready to
go as allegedly or hopefully or potentially the Minnesota Vikings
Week one starter. So you know, a lot of this
is just organizational speech. Kevin O'Connell just saying what needs

(05:18):
to be said without making news, and nobody is better
at that than Quezia, Doolfo Mensa and Kevin O'Connell. And
you know, looks like things are okay. But as far
as JJ McCarthy goes, I mean, you don't want to
have issues like this in the future. You don't want to.
You don't want JJ McCarthy to become the Brandon Roy

(05:41):
of the NBA, where you know he's got superstar potential.
You can make all the throws, but you just can't
stay healthy and get on the field. Typically you don't
see these kind of things with NFL quarterbacks. You don't
typically see structural knee damage because they don't have to
move around that much, take a couple of steps back,
they step up into the pocket, and you make a throw.
You know, typically see qbs with knee problems, at least

(06:04):
for the long term. So hopefully JAJ McCarthy, you know,
the Minnesota Vikings phenom, the guy that they're really basing
their entire jobs off of, because you signor and draft
a quarterback in the top ten overall and he's not
good and the team's not good. Well off with your head,
I mean, you're fired. See you go look for another

(06:27):
job somewhere else. So as far as Kevin O'Connell and
Qusio concern, I'm sure they're gonna get contract extensions this offseason.
But as far as jj McCarthy's health, I mean, you
need this guy healthy because he is the dictator of
their future success and future job security for the Minnesota Vikings.

(06:52):
So it's a big deal. It's not a big deal
right now. It might not be a big deal, but
it is a big deal now. I don't know how
it can be a big deal and be a big
deal at the same time. But all I know is
that this is something that we're gonna have to keep
our eyes on for the next six months to two
years because if this thing comes up again in about

(07:14):
a year or so, well, everyone's gonna point back to
this right here and say JAJ McCarthy has knee problems.
Something is not right with McCarthy and he can't get
on the field. So it's nothing right now. But the
Vikings organization, maybe they're not concerned and they're just being
honest with the media. Maybe they are concerned and you know,

(07:36):
there's given nothing, which is typical of the vikings. But
either way, long term there's at least a little bit
of a concern. It's not like this is a brush
it off. Oh yeah, he'll be back in you know,
a day or two. He needed an injection in his knee.
Anytime you got to have surgery or or an injection,

(07:58):
or or medical care or physical therapy, whatever it is,
it's never a good thing. You're never going into that
surgery or injection. I'm saying, yes, I got an injection today,
this is good. No, it's not good. So hopefully it's
not a problem long term, But right now, how can

(08:21):
you rule that out when a few months after surgery
they needed to they needed to do more work on it.
