Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Grind, a Minnesota sports podcast. Welcome into the Grind,
a Minnesota sports podcast. The Minnesota Vikings had preseason game
number two. Hardly any starters played. However, there was one
(00:22):
player that made us draw close into this game as
if it was Super Bowl Sunday. That's too far, but
there is a player playing in the Minnesota Vikings preseason
action that has our eyes focused and interested in games
(00:45):
as if Tiger Woods was competing in a major championship
on Sunday. But first, I need to tell you about
five Star Bath Solutions of Minneapolis as they transformed our
bathroom in forty eight hours, the entire thing. New floors,

(01:51):
five Star Bath Solutions of Minneapolis. All Right, this player
that I'm referencing, and it's a player that if you
listen to Saturday's podcast with Jacob and I, you should
because it was one of the best podcasts I think
this show has ever done. There's a good back and forth.
(02:13):
Jacob brought amazing points to the table, and the player
I'm referencing is Max Brosmer. Max Brosmer brings more eyes
to the television than any other player on the Vikings
roster not named j. J. McCarthy or Justin Jefferson. Max
(02:40):
Brosmer made preseason game number two and honestly, preseason game
number one interesting. McCarthy made preseason game number one interesting
for one series, and he had all eyes on him
for one series. But this battle for the backup quarterback
(03:03):
position has really become the storyline of the Minnesota Vikings
preseason because I don't think any of us are convinced
that Brett Ripion is going to be JJ McCarthy's backup.
I don't think any of us feel comfortable with that,
(03:23):
and I don't think Kevin O'Connell or the Vikings staff
feels comfortable with Brett Ripion running the Vikings offense in
case McCarthy went down with an injury and decisions in
the past. But support that opinion because I don't think
Brett Rippion has ever been the Vikings backup quarterback while
(03:47):
he's been on the roster. And that's why this Max
Brosmer discussion becomes interesting, because not only was he making
sensational throws throughout two preseason games, but has been widely
reported that he's been playing really good in training camp.
(04:10):
And not only has he been playing a really good
in training camp, but Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell
had many, many great things to say about undrafted rookie
Max Brozmer. He says he's running our system as if
he's been in it much longer, which is the ultimate
(04:33):
compliment to a quarterback in Kevin O'Connell's system. If Kevin
O'Connell says this about any quarterback on the roster that's
been there for less than two years, it is the
ultimate compliment, because if you think back to Kirk Cousins,
(04:58):
how long did it take Kim to really feel comfortable
in Kavian O'Connell's system. At the beginning of every season,
he started out kind of slow, and then mid season
he kind of found his footing, and then the end
of the year he was playing his best football of
the season. And for Max Brosmer to receive a compliment
like this from Kevin O'Connell shows me that this guy
(05:24):
is very, very smart and intelligent at grasping things many
quarterbacks can't grasp. And there's one strait that stands out
to me above any other skill set Max Brosmer has
and that many quarterbacks lack. And I think this is
(05:48):
the ultimate difference between being a great quarterback and being
a good quarterback, because you can be you can be elusive,
you can be smart, but there's one skill that separates
the goods from the greats. And I'm not saying Brozmer
(06:10):
is going to be great, but I'm saying that he
does possess this great skill set, and it's the skill
set to anticipate players being open on fourth down. In
this second preseason game, Brozmer found a wide receiver, threw
(06:31):
the ball split the scene between safety and linebacker and
found this wide receiver and threw the ball seconds before
the guy even turned to catch the ball. The anticipation
to throw the ball while there's linemen in someone's face
(06:51):
when a receiver has not yet turned for the ball
is the ultimate skill set that great quarterbacks possess. And
I've been on record saying that there's no backup quarterback
debate because what the Vikings are not going to do
is Sam Howe b Max Brosmer who's going to be backup.
(07:16):
They're not going to put a first time starting quarterback
Jason McCarthy out on the field and then have undrafted
quarterback Max Brosmer behind him. I still don't think that's
a realistic possibility. However, today I am thinking more about it. Today,
I am questioning my own opinion because of what I've
(07:38):
seen from Max Brosmer and because of what I've seen
from Sam Howe, because that interception he had in preseason
game number two is going to make you question things
about his ability as Vikings backup quarterback, and maybe the
route moving forward for the Vikings isn't Sam Howe QB
(07:59):
two and Max Brosmor QB three but rather cutting Sam
Howe and bringing in another QB two via trader via
free agency, and then keeping Max Brosmer as QB three. However,
with that being said, I don't think there's any question
(08:19):
that Max Brosmer deserves the QB three spot. And it's
one of those things where although he might be QB
three on the roster, it wouldn't be surprising if Max
Brosemer made a Tim Tebow like jump and went from
(08:43):
QB three QB four, if something happened to McCarthy and
then all of a sudden, Max Brosmer's QB two overnight.
It's one of those situations where yeah, he's QB four
now or QB three now, but if an injury happens,
he's in the game because of what he's shown. And
(09:04):
what also stands out to me is that he was
an undrafted quarterback. The Vikings did not select him late
in the rounds either, but signed him via undrafted rookies,
and the Minnesota Vikings, although they brought him brought him in,
they overlooked Max Brozmer during the NFL draft process. I
(09:27):
saw some of that going on on Sunday. How could
teams overlook Max Brosmer. This guy look at the accuracy
and the anticipation and the command of the huddle, and
the Vikings overlooked Brozemer. And sometimes in the league, drafting
a quarterback where you want to draft him in the
(09:52):
first round is actually not the best route, but rather
lucking into a quarterback. You've seen it for years. The
Patriots lucked into Tom Brady, the forty nine Ers looked
into brock Purty, even the Kansas City Chiefs lucked into
(10:15):
Patrick Mahomes. And I guess you could argue the Vikings
locked into JJ McCarthy because there were four quarterbacks taken
ahead of him. So sometimes when teams are successful, it's
because they didn't even get the quarterback that was number
(10:36):
one on their list, but rather got the quarterback that
they lucked into. And McCarthy and Brosmer both fall into
that list of lucking into these quarterbacks. Because the Vikings
didn't draft Max Brosmer and the Vikings didn't have McCarthy
(10:59):
as the number one option because they were hoping to
draft and select Drake May. They wanted to trade up
to that Patriots pick, and the Patriots offense, Shirley did
not look confident moving the ball against the Minnesota Vikings
second and third team defense in the first quarter. So
(11:20):
just something to think about and to remember, because yeah,
the Vikings selected McCarthy number ten, but he wasn't their
first option. And yeah, the Vikings brought in Max Brosmer
in an undrafted free agency, but again they didn't select
him in the draft, so they were that confident that
he would be a serviceable backup quarterback. But it appears
(11:42):
that it's what he's showing. And through the two preseason games,
Max Brosmer has looked better than Jaj McCarthy in prison.
Now you have to consider his competition and and things
like that, but Max Rosmer has looked the part and
(12:05):
has to have the Vikings organization severely questioning if Sam
Howell is a worthy enough backup to be behind McCarthy.
All right, one more discussion. We're referencing the Vikings, but
first I need to tell you about Hopeland Farms Beef.
(12:29):
Our beef intake this week has been insane. We had
beef Monday, Tuesday, wednes A, Thursday, Friday from Chuck Rose
to Habiger's and Steak. We went insane in the beef
this week. We went Hopeland Farm Beef. Contact them today
at nine five two four nine one one five four one.

They go to a store, it's five dollars a pound
for Hamburger beef. You go to a store for a
steak and you're looking at nine to ten dollars spound.
Hopland Farm has a set price. All of it is
roughly four dollars a pound. It's financially responsible and it's
(13:15):
better for you. Hokland Farms Beef nine five two four

he'll give you ten percent off your first order. Hoakland
Farms Beef nine five two four four one. Judd Zolgad
had a tweet on Saturday's preseason action said this, the
(13:44):
Vikings are now using ty Felton. The mud Dogs are
now using the water Boy on offense. Last game of
the year. Bob can only think back now not going
and getting a guy with more punt return experience as
a recipe for disaster. I'd bring back Brandon Powell before
(14:05):
using an inexperienced punt returner. And what's so interesting about
that is Brandon Powell was in attendance for the Vikings
preseason game number two and he posted I'm here for
my sons, my brothers, some receivers that he was supporting,
But was he there to kind of keep an eye
(14:27):
on the Vikings then to see if they would miss
him or not. I liked Brandon Powell. I liked what
he brought to the organization. And he's cheap as helle.
He was a good punt returner, reliable, and he was
a good underneath the wide receiver that I thought caught
more passes than dropped. But then the next kickoff return,
(14:54):
ty Felton fumbles the ball and the Vikings recovered, But
who really cares about the recovery. It's more so the fumble.
Tye Felton lost that responsibility with that fumble. If you
fumble in the preseason, a kick return and kick returns
(15:15):
can change the course of a game quickly. Another team
scores a touchdown or it's opening kickoff of the game,
and then you fumble it, they get the ball and
they score right away. That just can't happen, and Tye
Felton lost that responsibility. And you don't really think as
a fan or podcaster, you don't really think about the
(15:38):
punt returner or kickoff returner when it comes to who
makes the fifty three man roster. Often you don't think
about it until you realize it's really, really bad, and
then it's like, oh, how good the coaches overlook this.
But it's one of those things where, like I said,
(16:00):
you don't realize that you miss it until you miss it,
And you don't realize how much you take it for
granted until you have a competition at these spots. And
what's so funny about the word competition is the word
competition is thrown around as if it's such a compliment
(16:24):
to players competing for a spot. I hear the word
competition and I go the exact opposite way. I am
scared out of my mind because what that tells me
is that there's not a dominant player that has taken
over this position. There's not a guy that has head
(16:45):
and shoulders above the rest of his teammates. So when
there's a competition, hide the women and children, because then
you get shit like ty Felton fumbling the kickoff return.
Then he got three four guys compete for the same position,
and I like that. What I want is someone that
is so good, so confident, so reliable at any position
(17:09):
on the football field that the job is his and
there's no doubt or question in any of the coach's minds.
The last thing that I want is a position being
a revolving door or you're just spinning and spinning and spinning,
and you're trying to find someone that's worthy and capable.
(17:30):
And right now that position is the Vikings punt returner
and kickoff returner. And at the point right now, the
Vikings are gonna have major issues this season if they
don't address this position, if they don't figure out or
bring back Brandon Powell. So something to keep an eye on,
(17:51):
and something that is no joke, because when a team
punts the ball, a punt return is way more difficult
than it looks on TV. And when there's a team
trying to pin you back in your own territory and
you got a fair catch the ball with five players
(18:11):
on the special team surrounding you try to get you
to drop the ball, talking trash and you're out there
on an island by yourself. You need someone reliable that
can catch the ball, because if you drop it or
fumble it, or whatever the case may be, there are
four or five special teams players that are ready to
(18:33):
eat up that ball, and if you drop it, you're
looking at a huge swing of events in that game.
Get a situation that could possibly change the trajectory of
your season if a punt return muff happens at the
worst time of the season. So something to think about
(18:55):
is something to be aware of as you're watching vikings
preseason foot ball. Thanks for watching, Thanks for listening. Remember
