Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
What is up straight Fire, fam, It's me Jason McIntyre.
Straight Fire from Monday, April eighth. It is great to
be back podcasting a week off for the kid's spring break.
So much happened while I was gone. We won't get
to all of it in this podcast. We will lean
(00:36):
heavily on college hoops, obviously, Caitlin Clark that saga, and
then I think we'll save NBA for tomorrow. And then
Stefan Diggs got traded, which is not a surprise to
anybody who's listening to this podcast. Just so much that's happened.
I'll quickly recap spring break for you. Now I haven't
told Rob this part. I haven't told many people this part,
(00:56):
but you know, we go to spring break and it
was kind of a late booking for Hawaii, and we
went to this place that we went on our honeymoon,
and it's think now the hotel has changed hands a
couple of times, and I'll just say this, the service
was not great at all. Okay, but that wasn't like
the big deal. So Day two were at the pool
and you know, we're like, oh, let's go to lunch
(01:18):
at this restaurant and we go there and I see
like the manager of the restaurant go take a knee
and start talking to this guy. And I'm like, oh, well,
that guy must be famous. I can't really tell. He's
wearing a hat and he's with his family and some
friends and kids and stuff. So then I see this
like family come over and they're like, hey, can we
get a picture. I'm like, okay, this guy's obviously famous.
And it turns out it was Donald Glover, the guy
(01:41):
who was in Mister and Missus Smith, the New show,
and he was in a great show on Atlanta, which
I haven't seen but got big time reviews. He's been
in a bunch of stuff and super nice guy, friendly guy,
no big deal. I totally forgot or didn't know. He
was childish gambino who when I told a friend, he
was like, holy cow, that's like one of the most
(02:02):
talented guy. He's like a Bruno Mars level talent. I
was like, oh, well, it seems like a nice guy.
So I had fine, Okay, no, not a big deal.
You see a quasi famous person and then you know
the next day, we're in the hot tub, and this
random guy goes, dude, you know who I saw on
the beach yesterday. I was like no, and he's like,
do you know that guy Alex Jones?
Speaker 4 (02:23):
And I was like, oh gosh, not that guy. He's
like yeah, he's.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Like super fat and super loud, and I was like,
oh my gosh. So I didn't want to tell like
the wife about this because you know the guys listen, man,
he's a conspiracy theorist. He went on the rant claiming
the school shooting in Connecticut where like thirty people died
kids was like fake. He's been sued into oblivion and
(02:50):
he owes people tons of money. Yet here he is
at a I'm not gonna say it was a five
star resort, but it's an expensive resort.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Ps.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
We booked it through Costco. I'm not I don't I'm
no shave in my game. Go to Costco, folks, you
get amazing deals. Anyways, And so.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Finally I tell the wife and she's like, you gotta
be kidding me.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
And it's like disappointing because you know, you don't want
to go to the hot tub and you're walking over
there and you just see this guy. He's like a
three hundred pounds fucking goblin, and he's sitting there all loud,
and I'm like, I don't want to be anywhere near this.
I like, I'm not saying I would get an altercation
with him. I just I don't. He's just a toxic
human being, and I just so I would Let's go
(03:33):
to the other hot tub. Fine fight. So then, of
course the next day we're like, let's just get off
the resort and go somewhere else, you know, And so
we go to we went to some beach and did
all this fun stuff and someone texts me, dude, you're
not at the resort. Alex Jones is that he's on
TMZ And I guess someone there took a picture of
paparazzi or whatever.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
But it's weird.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
It was a spring break trip, it was fun, we
had a good time, and just the mere fact that
that guy was there kind of sort of tarnished it. Now, Rob,
before I get to the Kitlin Park, I gotta ask,
Like I tried to not let it get to me,
but again, picture yourself at a resort on a vacation
with your family and this like legitimate whack job was there.
(04:14):
Like I don't know like what the move is. Obviously
like said, I'm not gonna have an altercation. I'm i
gonna talk to the guy. It just didn't feel it
didn't feel good.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, that's gotta be kind of, you know, awkward, especially
as someone like you who has young kids and to
know that, you know, the kind of people that Alex
Jones was spreading these conspiracies that ultimately cost him like
a billion dollars in a lawsuit, right, something like that
supposedly right, exactly, so you know, for him to say
things like he did about the Sandy Hook situation with
(04:45):
people who have kids and you, who has kids, I'm
honestly applauding you that you were able to not engage
in the situation because I don't know if I would
have been able to personally.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, no, no, I I did, and I avoid I
just avoided the guy like the player. You know, you
can still have fun at the resort. Anyways, enough about vacation,
we'll do Final four. Natty bets tonight. I was great
in the Final four. Two and Oh made a good
amount of money, but it was just clawing back losses
from the Calcutta.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
I don't want to talk about it, folks.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Marquette, Houston, Iowa State, all three favored in the sweet sixteen,
All three loss. None of them led in the second half.
I was legit devastated our flight to Hawaii. I basically
just I was like, because it wasn't like you lost
on a buzzer beater that would be like, I'm pissed.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
That sucks.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
It wasn't like they got totally run out of the building.
They were like competitive but never could take to leave
in the second half. And I was just like stunned
with one of the most stunning gambling losses I've ever had. Anyways,
let's get positive. Let's talk about Kaitlyn Clark. Since everybody
hates for some reason, Kitlin Clark, and listen, let's go
ahead and give good South Carolina their flower. They won
the national championship, they covered the spread. Yes, people talked
(06:02):
about gambling on a women's basketball game. I did not
have any money on it. South Carolina wins by twelve,
and that does our discussion on South Carolina no disrespect
to the game Cocks undefeated season, stacked team apparently, and
I rob, I don't know if you know how accurate.
This is, but some guy on Twitter keep sending me, dude,
Iowa has won five star recruit. South Carolina has seven
(06:26):
on their roster. Now, I again, I didn't do the
research and look into it, but apparently two of Iowa's
starters were like no star recruits, like you know, just
built themselves up at Iowa and did great. And you know,
here Caitlin Clark is doing the one man show or
one woman show and put on a hell of a performance.
The ratings were through the roof. The viewership was astronomical.
(06:52):
I saw that essentially, you know, South Carolina n C
State was a crap game in the Final four, and
that was the guy like seven million viewers. Kaitlin Clark
against Yukon got fourteen million, like double, And so I
need to start there because let's be real, guys, nobody
has ever had the impact on women's college basketball the
(07:13):
Kaitlin Clark has had. Nobody It's not even close. Now,
timing is everything, and you guys do know this. In sports,
timing is everything. And just as a point of reference
for those of you who know, I had a website,
the Big Lead. I started at two thousand and six,
February ish, And that was an era where websites were
(07:34):
a big deal. You had to type in the URL,
you had to bookmark them, you had to go to
them regularly.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
I'm talking regularly, like four.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Or five times a day. This was two thousand and six,
pre social media. YouTube was tiny, okay, And the timing of.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
The website was perfect.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Right started two thousand and six. By twenty eleven, I
was able to sell it. Social media kind of came
along two thousand and nine, I mean relevant, relevant, Twitter
you know was in its infancy in what two thousand
and eight nine, But bottom line is there were a
lot of late adapters to social media. So even in
twenty ten, eleven, twelve, you still were going too websites
(08:12):
every day. But social media was kind of like gasoline
on websites, and the traffic grew and I was able
to sell it, and it was it was amazing, But
the timing of it was everything. And all these people
hell every year at right around college graduation time, Dude,
how did you get where you are? I kind of
want to get there. I just I don't want it
(08:34):
to take like, you know, ten fifteen years. And I
was like, oh, I started this thing called a website,
and a lot of people are like, oh, you start
a website, Like nobody wants to start a website now,
you just want to start a social media account and
have it grow. But the timing of me starting the
website was perfect two thousand and six. The timing of
Caitlin Clark ascending in basketball is perfect. Okay, You've got
(08:58):
the USA women's soccer team winning back to back World Cups.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
That never happens.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
You've got the US I don't know, we don't even
know what the women's soccer league here is in America.
That's popping and truthfully, and I don't like to really
tread too much into this, but there's this weird thing
going on in America right now where you know, a
bunch of people are trying to say, like, hey, women
(09:27):
can't have abortions anymore. And I know that's a toxic discussion.
But I think I've mentioned this guy before, Prof G.
Scott Galloway. Just I listened to my son had a
volleyball tournament. On the way back, we listened to Prof
G talk about what's happening in America with women, and
it's this. It's called the title of it's called Roe
just ROWI, and he has an amazing breakdown of what's
(09:50):
happening in America with women, and there's just a lot
of pushback against women who are now more successful than
men in a lot of cases. And they're going to
college and they're getting better grades and they're getting better jobs,
and like, women are on the uptick and a lot
of guys for whatever reason, are like angry about this, and.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Women are They're having there, They're rolling right now.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Things are crushing for them. And Kitlin Clark came in
at a moment as women's sports are rising. You guys know,
I own a soccer team in Mexico. Well, I was
reading how the US Women's Soccer League send a two
hundred and forty million dollar TV deal. Now, obviously TV
deals are everything NBA, NFL Women's Soccer League, two hundred
(10:32):
and forty million dollar TV deal WNBA. I don't follow
it closely. I'll probably go to my first game when
Kitlin Clark comes out here to LA next year.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
My daughter's already interested.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
And you know, frankly, if we're being honest, like the
timing for Kaitlin Clark was awesome, and she deserves all
of it.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Kaitlin Clark without question.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
No, I know there's been awesome players, and you guys
can debate whether or not Kaitlyn Cark is the greatest
women's college basketball player ever. I'll leave it to someone
with some women's basketball domain expertise. But it's like, like.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
Think about this.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Like Dawn Staley took the microphone after the game after
South Carolina won the title and basically said, Caitlin Clark,
you're one of the goats for what you've done for
women's basketball. And she didn't win a title, And of
course I put on Twitter, Hey, Caitlin Clark doesn't need
a title to be the best women's basketball player in
college history.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
And of course all these people like, yes, you do
you need a title. You would never say that about
Berkley or Carl Malone.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
I was like, well, actually, pro basketball for men is
not the same as college for women.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
But okay, and I do think what she's done for Iowa.
I looked it up.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Iowa, by the way, had one Elite eight trip in
the last twenty five is years.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Catlin Cark shows up, they go to the title game twice.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Not bad, and she was going up against just an
amazing juggernaut of a team in South Carolina and for
her to go toe to toe with them. They're down
I think five, with like three minutes left. They had
a tiny window. It just couldn't get over the hump.
I don't think the loss diminishes her. But that's not
even the discussion. If you guys really notice, I thought
(12:17):
people are outraged that South Carolina isn't getting their flowers.
Did you see the CNN tweet? J Mack CNN did
a tweet about the game and clicked percent out a
link and their thumbnail image was of Caitlin Clark. Why
are they highlighting the white girl who lost? Why aren't
(12:38):
they giving you know, the largely African American team from
South colt Why aren't they give it in their flowers?
I'm like, wait, hold up, guys, hold hold up, hold up,
hold hold You do know this is a business, right,
CNN is a business. The bottom line matters. They know, Hey, guys.
(12:58):
If we do a I don't know, a twelve minutes
segment on South Carolina women's basketball or is it gonna
do well for us? Could it travel then on social media?
Could we turn it into a story are they gonna
generate clicks? Because that's what we're about. And if we
do it on Caitlin Croark in Iowa, we know, we
know people are gonna tune in and they're gonna click.
(13:20):
That's what's happening here. The game done changed, you guys know,
the game is totally different. This is no longer the
media and Dan rather Tom Brokaw and partisan media. And
I'm not saying CNN is bias against South Carolina. That's
nobody's saying that. But the reality is currently, if you're
(13:46):
gonna click, then that's what the people are gonna talk about.
And CNN and Fox and MSNBC and all these people,
all they care about is the bottom line. And I
is that right? I don't know the moral answer to that.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
Is it great?
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Probably not? I don't know what that means. We're gonna
be in five ten years?
Speaker 4 (14:04):
You know? Are you only then talking about what people
care about? And you know, then you become like, hey.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
You wanna be Are you gonna beat meat or vegetables?
Like you can go every night without anting your vegetables
the important stuff? And if you just eat a diet
of meat, is that gonna be okay? Probably not, so
you do need the balance. But again, in a situation
like this, you can tell it quickly. South Carolina won
the game. They were undefeated, first undefeated champions ince yukon
blah blah blah.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Awesome.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
So Kitlyn Clark like, I'm sorry, that's just how it is.
And I do find it weird. And again, I was
on spring break and I do this Twitter detox where
I'm not on there. The only time I came up
for air was the Kitlin Clark LSU game. We watched
it at the at the beach bar at the hotel.
There's probably there's two TVs. There's probably twenty five thirty
people watching the entire game. I'm not even making this up.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
We had a good table. You know, my daughter's.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
A hoops fan, you know, because I coach her and
hoops and the wife and son. We all sat there
watched eight and of course they jumped in the pool
during commercial breaks. Blah blah blah. But like she's appointment
television now. I do think that there'll be a little
regression when she leaves college basketball. Obviously, the sport's in
a great place. The kid Juju Watkins at USC is awesome.
(15:17):
But there was something about the Clerk story from Iowa
small town, passed on all the big schools that wanted her.
Connecticut didn't want her, by the way, and takes this
Hodgepodge group. There's like a hoosiers ish feel to it,
and listen, I love Hoosiers. I also love Coach Carter,
(15:40):
which is one of the most underrated basketball movies ever.
I showed my kids that I've watched it many times.
I love that I like basketball, and I think the
Caitlin Clark story is amazing. She I know they were
favored in some of those games against LSU and Yukon.
To me, they were underdogs, they had less talent. They
were an amazing storyline. And my guess when later today
(16:03):
the numbers come out.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
I don't know, Rob, I will go Sunday afternoon. It
was up against some.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Golf tournament that I didn't watch, but my buddy Vic
cast a futures ticket on the on the Indian guy
who won it. Apparently he's like dating some Instagram model.
I went on his Instagram. They're engaged, blah blah blah whatever.
But like nobody's watching golf. There was some NBA action.
I don't think game eighty, Game seventy seven on the
(16:31):
NBA schedule comes close to matching the women's National Championship
game with Kaitlin Clark.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
So I'll say, Rob, I'll go twenty one twenty one mil.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
That'll be my guess for Iowa South Carolina, close game
until the final, like you know, minute or whatever. But yeah,
I'll say twenty one million. And there's a lot to
chew on there. You don't need to address at all.
We're not done with the topic. I still have a
second layer to do. But I'm just curious your thoughts
on a lot of like the Kaitlin Clark hate. You're
on the ground floor seeing while I was on spring break,
what was happening an odd couple, And I'm just curious
(17:08):
if if you tend to agree with me that you know,
Caitlin Clark super duper important. I mean, I think the
impact rop is. Remember how Larry Bird and Magic Johnson
kind of got the NBA started in the eighties. The
NBA existed before then. It was Fine Cream Ub Bill Jabar,
Bill Walton, all those great teams players, but the NBA
really started the modern era with Magic and Bird, and
(17:32):
I kind of feel like Caitlin Clark is those two
combined for women's college basketball, and then you had like
the Angel Rees subplot, you had the undefeated South Carolina subplot,
you had all the records for Kitlin Clark like they
were like small little satellite things underneath it.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Maybe that means Juju Watkins is going to be Michael
Jordan here. I don't know, but I do think that
the impact she's had, people are going to be talking
about Caitlin Clark like thirty years from now that was.
I don't think we're gonna see another one of these moments.
If you're a family man like me, you know how
tough it could be to get last minute tickets to
a big time supporting event. Most of the seats aren't
(18:13):
any good, and the good ones tend to cost an
arm and a leg. That's why I use game Time.
Game Time is now an authorized ticket marketplace of Major
League Baseball, which makes getting tickets even faster and easier.
In fact, prices on the game Time app actually go
down the closer it gets to first pitch. San Diego's
coming to LA for a weekend series, and right now,
(18:34):
game Time has a flash sale going on that would
save my family one hundred and fifty dollars for four
seats behind home plate. And they've got even a drone
show after the game. Talk about a win win with
killer last minute deals, all in prices, views from your seat,
and their lowest price guarantee. Game Time tapes guesswork out
of buying MLB tickets with all in pricing and the
(18:57):
lowest price guarantee that will credit you one hundred percent
of the difference if you find something cheaper. Game Time
is the real MVP for sports fans like me. Take
the guesswork out of buying tickets with game Time. Download

Speaker 1 (19:25):
Ooh, I don't know about that last part, but I
grew with a lot of what you said. As far
as the ratings, I'm going to take the under only slightly.
I had the over cent of twenty and a half million,
so twenty one you're having the over slightly, but we're
both way up there. In fact, I'll double down and
I'll say that the women's rating for Sunday again, part
of it being on ABC, the national broadcast, is going
(19:46):
to outdo tonight's yukon Purdue ratings. That's my hot take,
if you have to call it a hot take on that.
But you know, some people might say, oh, how are
you going to say a women's games that would do
the men's championship. Well, that's what I'm gonna say. And
reason being, and this is again, this is anecdotal. Completely
understand this. My wife has not watched a non Super
(20:07):
Bowl sporting event with me since Paalgasol played for the Lakers,
right like, she has not sat down and watched the
sporting event with me that wasn't the Super Bowl since
Power left the Lakers. She was a big Pagosol fan.
She sat down with her family, you know, visiting, my
daughter's down on the couch to you we're all watching
Iowa versus South Carolina. Not because she cares who wins,
(20:29):
not because she likes basketball all that much, but because
she knows about Caitlyn Clark. She never even seen her play,
but she knows the name, she knows the buzz, she
knows that there's this girl that plays for this team
that's kind of like an underdog story. But she's really
really good and everybody's talking about her. So my wife
wanted to watch her play. And you know, that first
quarter obviously had her hooked when Kaitlyn Clark was off
(20:50):
for eighteen in the opening ten minutes. Went downhill after that,
But yeah, Kaitlyn Clark is a shooting star in in
sports right because South Carolina and again, it sucks that
they're kind of getting thrown to the wayside because they
were absolutely dominant during this run, I mean thirty eight,
(21:10):
no after losing their entire starting lineup. If Kaitlyn Clark
doesn't meet them last year in the final four, they're
back to back undefeated championship seasons. Like that's that's you know,
that's LEU al sindor UCLA John Wooden level type stuff
that Don Staley and the game Cocks have been doing.
So that that's you know, that's almost a totally different conversation.
(21:31):
But as far as Kaitlyn Clark goes, and it's kind
of funny that you brought up Alex Jones because in
a weird way this time to makes sense to me.
I feel like, for the most part, everybody was rooting
for Kaitlyn Clark. Not necessarily they were rooting against South Carolina.
But the story of Kaitlyn Clark was something that everybody
could get behind because she's she's a great player, number one,
(21:53):
but like you said, she's from a small town. She's
played at home against a with a non perennial power
our team, and she was able to lead them to
heights that they hadn't seen in decades. Right, So it
was something that everybody can kind of get behind. And
yet there was a vocal minority Alex Jones in this case,
(22:15):
a vocal minority of female women's basketball players that for
whatever reason, over the last week or so, have gone
out of their way to consistently throw shade at Kaitlin Clark.
All Right, the biggest one, the biggest culprit in this
might have been who Lebron Jess was tweeting about on
Sunday before he decided to mail it in and not
play last night against the Timberwolves in a must win game.
(22:35):
But you know it's okay, Lebron, I'll let that slide
for now because it's not an NBA podcast, But Diana
Tarazzi felt compelled to say on ESPN that you know
reality is coming for Kaitlin Clark, that you know you
look good playing against eighteen year olds, but come play
with some grown women and you're going to see what happens.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
Right.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
And then even before that, Brianna Storre, who was an
all time great college you askerby even a great w
NBA player, said, now, this is like a layup question.
She was asked by Sirius XM. Does Caitlyn Clark need
a title to be considered an all time great? Not
the all time great, not the goat, just one of
(23:14):
the greats. Brianna Stewart, Yeah, she does. I think so.
And it's like, do you not understand, right? Do you
not understand the circumstances around Caitlyn Clark? Do you not
understand the difference between a pair of women. Again, Tarazi
and Stu are fantastic, all time great players. They also
played for an all time great program with the winning
(23:36):
as coaching women's college basketball history. Caitlyn Clark did not
play at Yukon. She did not play at Tennessee, right,
she's not currently playing at South Carolina, which is top
that they can lose entire starting five. Still going feed it.
She came up and played for her basically hometown team,
and she is bringing more attention to the sport than
any of your favorite player ever did before that. Right
(23:58):
as good as Tarazi was, she was again this kind
of of eyeball attention. Dewey wasn't getting this kind of attention.
Maya More was a getting. This should make a whole squat, Like,
go down the list, whoever your favorite college basketball female
player was. None of them were getting Kaitlyn Clark type numbers.
And for those two women again the vocal minority, because
they happen to be the ones with the microphones in
(24:19):
front of them to kind of go out of their
way to needle her. It's like, is this what, Diana Tarazi?
Do you want to play in front of six thousand
people every game? Or do you want to play in
front of nineteen thousand like Caitlin Clark is regularly drying.
The Las Vegas Aces had the highest attendance in WNBA
last year ever and fifty one average per game their
(24:44):
first game thousand, nine thousand and five to fifty one
was their average. Their first game against Kaitlin Clarks was
presumpably going to be the team from Indiana the Fever.
They already sold out the arena that they normally play
in and decided that they needed to move to the
to a different venue, the Team Mobile Arena in Vegas,
because it holds double the capacity, because they imagine they're
(25:04):
going to get double the attendance. So again, if you
are Diana Tarazi and Brianna Stewart, do you want to
be playing for the six thousand people? Do you want
the average annual salary for a women's player in the
WABA to be one hundred and fifteen thousand? No, of
course not. So, then why are you shitting on somebody
who almost single handedly can carry your sport to new heights.
(25:29):
Almost single handedly is going to raise the floor of
what your average attendance is, the floor of what your
average annual salary is. You should be like Don Staley
was even after they beat her, thanking her for everything
that she's done for your sport.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Yeah, the rising tide lifts all boats, right, I think
that's the same.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
Well, Caitlin Clark is the tide.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
Everybody will eat because Caitlin Clark is dominating everyone.
Speaker 4 (25:57):
Now listen, it's just a dumb statement.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Oh it's good, be rude awakening when she gets to
the w No shit, Oh really you think pro sports
are harder than college sports? Wow?
Speaker 4 (26:07):
Just earth shattering stuff. I'm so impressed.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Like, it's just very weird for the You're right for
them to go out of their way.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
It reminds me.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Ah, yes, one of my favorite stories back when I
had the radio show. One of my favorite stories was
how Steph Curry went from basically being what he was,
like a top ten pick, and then he was kind
of injured a bit and then like the next thing,
you know, I think twenty fifteen playoffs, No, no, twenty
(26:38):
fourteen playoffs.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
They lost the Clippers in seven? Is that what happened?
You remember that first round? I think it was in seven.
But the Splash Brothers were born. They were like, oh
they're fun, a nice little story. Oh yeah, okay, cool fun.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
The next year they win the title and Steph Curry
becomes like a massive sensation, wins the MVP. And the
hate for Curry do you remember this, Rob? It was
like Russell Westbrook did not like Curry Chris Paul hated,
like genuinely hated Steph Curry, and the thought was the
thunder had next. They were next in line.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
With Harden and.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
KD and Russ they were next in line, and then
Chris Paul had Lob City with the Clippers. Those groups
were next in line. Once Kobe like hands the baton
to the next great superstars, those are gonna be the guys.
And of course Chris Parl was like, you know, ballyho
top three pick, everybody knew who he was, Rookie the
Year everything, and Russell Westbrook just a dunking machine, his energy,
(27:40):
his ferocity, and those guys did not like Steph Curry
at all. And I'll even remind you, guys, in the
seventy three Wood Warrior season, there were people still saying, Oh,
these guys are soft Shack and Barkley would just take
shots at them all the time. Oh, this team's soft,
They're just jumpshooters, And there's plenty of video. They just
(28:01):
refused to accept that the game had changed, and Curry
was at the forefront. Okay, And of course in the
seventy three win season, if you go back and look,
I think it was game six Curry throws his mouthpiece,
was that the one Rob in Cleveland and Lebron had
(28:22):
a block, and he turns around and gives this like,
oh yeah, blah blah blah. Even Lebron at the time,
I know Lebron spoke glowing way about Curry. I get
that Lebron did not love him because Lebron was boys
with Chris Paul. And of course, now Curry eating into
Lebron's championships when he's trying to catch Jordan for six,
and there was some disday and I don't think Lebron
outwardly disliked him as much as Russ. Rob would maybe
(28:44):
no better, But there was so much pushback on Curry,
and I didn't get it. Fans loved him. Ratings were up,
way up, Jersey sales arenas like the NBA TV deal
got to be awesome, largely in part thanks to Steph
Curry the dominance, and I mean the league was in
a better place because of them. And there was still hate.
(29:04):
So hater's gout hate, as they like to say. And
I don't know, Rob, I just it just strikes me
as odd that these that these women.
Speaker 4 (29:11):
Now, I will say, one of the so you guys.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Know, I worked at US Weekly, this celebrity magazine, and
it was like, I don't know. There was basically me,
like two other straight guys, a couple of gay guys,
and like thirty girls, and of course some of the
stuff I would see among the women.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
There was just like they were just brutal to each other.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
And one of the girls said to me, Jason, the
meanest people to women are other women, and I was
just blown away by the quote. I was like, Wow,
that's shocking.
Speaker 4 (29:41):
I don't know. It's guys.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
It's like, you know, we rib each other and stuff,
but like, I don't think, what's your friends, Like, you're
not mean, and I just I'm just surprised that, like
you said, Rob, that these women in the WNBA, even
in college basketball, like the Angel re stuff was fun,
the her and Kitlin Clark beef. I didn't like what
(30:02):
angel Clark said about you know.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
After they lose. She's just like, oh, people have.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
Been attacking me and all this stuff like that, Come on,
give me a break. You know.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
It's just like you didn't win, so you're playing like
the victim.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
I didn't like what Angel Rees did, but I don't
know everything about the Kitlin Clark's story to me is incredible,
and I do know a lot of other I mean,
I'm texting with other dads who I've never texted with
women's basketball about ever. I mean, I don't know that
I've ever texted with women's basketball about I think with anyone,
and a lot of people were super into it, and
I'm sure you were as well. Rob.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Yeah, And you know, I think that you had the
nail and head right off the beginning when you mentioned
the comparison between the NBA and the WNBA game and
that when Steph Curry was having his moment, there were
a lot of haters on the forefronting media, you know,
Shack and Barkley being the guys carrying the torch right
because they are the at that time especially were the
faces of the league. Basically like they were the guys
(30:58):
that everybody looked to, Well, what are the inside the
NBA guys gonna say about this game, or about this team,
or about this player, because even though they didn't actually
watch the games admittedly, which they are they said on
multiple occasions, people still teem to hold their opinions above
anyone else's. So the idea of the previous generation shitting
on the current situation. Like that's not new, right, We
(31:20):
see that all the time, especially in the NBA. I
guess what I was so taken aback by is for
women Again the vocal Minority's this is not a widespread
thing across the WNBA. This was specifically Diana Tarazi, Brianna Stewart,
Kelsey Plum to a very very lesser extent that we're
saying things about a woman that is, as we said before,
(31:46):
she is the reason why people are watching your sport.
She might not be as good as Diana Tarazi in
the WNBA, she might not be as good as Sue
Byrd or even Kelsey Plum was playing right now, Like
that's entirely possible. But the thing is you have to
set all that aside, your competitive nature and just be like, look,
(32:08):
when she gets here, I'm gonna go at her. I'm
gonna bus try to bust her ask the same way
I would any any other rookie that I see. But
I'm also gonna acknowledge that her being here, her being
a good player, as good as she is, is good
for me too, Like we work together at Fox and
iHeart not just because you work on the show with Colin.
(32:31):
But I root for Colin Cowherd to have fantastic ratings
both on TV and on radio. You know why, because
if Colin's doing well, it's gonna raise the floor for
everyone underneath them. So everybody at FS one, everybody at
iHeartMedia suddenly is gonna get looked at a different way.
Hopefully they get paid a different way. Because he's the
one carrying the blowtorch for us. And if Caitlin Clark
(32:54):
can do that for the w NBA, why wouldn't you
support her? That's what I don't understand.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
Totally with you, This is wild. So I just looked
up the.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
Lowest rated women's college basketball title game and it looks
like number two is Yukon's two thousand and nine win
over Louisville. Now that Yukon team was let's see here
(33:25):
third looks like they did not lose a game thirty
nine and zero total beasts.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
And I happen to look.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
Now Breonna Stor was not on the team, but Maya
Moore was on the team. Mayamur, of course, is someone
who I guess Caitlin carkas said, she looked up to
a lot which is cool, But we're talking that that
had one point eight million viewers in the title game.
I'm sorry, no, no, hold on the one point eight
(33:53):
and two point and for some reason, two point seven
was uh I guess maybe two point seven was the
title game. One point eight was the semi final. Oh no, no,
two point seven million? Sorry, two point seven million for
the Yukon Louisville two thousand and nine game was the
lowest rated. Kaitlyn Clark might get eight times that number,
(34:17):
eight times an undefeated Yukon team fifteen years ago. Does
that not say how much the sport's grown? And again,
TV ratings is just one metric. It's just staggering how
people can be pushing back. Now here's the thing, Rob,
what do you think it's college women's college troops next year?
Speaker 4 (34:33):
How many times do you think we have Kaitlyn someone
in women's.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
College basketball leading the podcast next year? Because Kaitlyn's done
that several times? My guess, short of Juju Watkins going
for like eighty points in a game or something insane.
Speaker 4 (34:44):
I don't know that we're gonna have.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
I just don't know that this is you know, these
are kind of one off events, you know, enjoy it
in the moment. I don't know that that would just
be my read on on the Caitlin Clark saga. And
I'll I'll just I guess I'll just wrap up with
this idea of winning a championship.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
You absolutely need it.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
Yeah, obviously you need championships, but there are scenarios where
without a championship, you can still be considered one of
the greats. Now in pro sports, it's extremely difficult. But
in college, I mean, I don't know, rob I don't
think Tim Duncan won a Natty and I think he's
a national championship. I think he stayed at Dwake for
(35:27):
four years and was totally dominant and one of the
best players in college basketball and went number one and
was it instant twenty to ten or whatever. Guy as
a rookie won a title I think with David Robinson
in his first year or second year, and it was like,
Tim Duncan is one of the great college basketball players
ever ever, and he doesn't have a title, So we
(35:48):
got to strip that away from him because he doesn't
have a championship. Like championships are won by teams, not
by individual players. How many times have we talked in
the pros, obviously different from college where Magic went to
a stack deck with your bar. Michael Jordan won nothing
until he got Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson, Like you
(36:11):
need teams to win the title teams.
Speaker 4 (36:15):
Oh all right, that's a long Caitlin Clark rant.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
The NBA season is in full swing, and when I

You know, I love my guy's Steph, but the Lakers
are favorites for a reason. We saw Lebron sit out

Lakers playing at home. They've been playing great ball of light.

Speaker 4 (37:49):
Here's your best bet. First of all, did you have
a bracket with with Connectic?
Speaker 3 (37:55):
Now with Connecticut, with Perdue and Yukon.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
I had a bracket with Connecticut, winning it at two
of them with Cannadaga whinning it up, but nothing with
Connecticut and Purdue both in the championship game.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
Yeah, it's weird.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
This was one of those tournaments where a lot of
people are like still alive in bracket contest. They're like, well,
if I get the score right in Yukon, I can
win my pool. And I'm like, oh, that's awesome. I
guess that kind of shows it was one of those
chalkier tournaments. Of course, your boy did not do great
in any bracket contest because you know, like, I'm not
a chalk better.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
I'm not.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
I'm not a chalk guy. Chalk was the Kansas City
Chiefs winning the Super Bowl over the Niners.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
Everybody had the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
I said, nah, give me Niners and came up a
little short on that one. So I have Yukon tonight, obviously,
so now here this is weird. So rob the line.
I see it online and it's five and a half,
and I'm like, all right, I gotta take five and
a half. You know what, let me tell me buy
a little extra for the So I got five minus
one twenty, for instance, one hundred twenty bucks to win
(38:54):
a one hundred and twenty one dollars to win one
hundred and I think Yukon. I I think they're gonna
pretty much handle and win this game. I'm not taking
shot to Perdue. I know I got some I got
two buddies, one guy who flew to the Final four.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
For Perdue because he went there.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
Another guy who had played at Purdue, and you know,
I became friendly with that guy, and then I started
to get to know Robbie Hummel a lot, and he's
enjoying this ride. I don't see how Purdue wins this game.
So just my dime store thoughts. After a really nice
final four, I hit the first half under on Purdue,
NC State and then Yukon, and then I bet Yukon
(39:35):
live when it was seven. So Perdue is the second
best three point shooting team in the country. But this
is what's not calculated in the numbers, and I think
becomes a bit of a struggle for them. So why
are they the three second best three point shooting team
in the country? Is it because I don't know? Zach
(39:58):
Eaedi's seven foot four and just it's every offense he's second,
he's like sixth best in the country. And offensive boards
he just grabs offensive boards and then just kicks it.
Out and they're getting open threes. Yeah, that kind of
happens a lot. And are they maybe the second best
three point shooting team because teams have to double Zachi
Edie not a lot of seven footers out there. And
then you got to pick your poison on the perimeter.
(40:18):
Who who were gonna are we gonna lance, We're gonna
let the other guard who's really good but struggle mightily
in the final four, Like, what's our game plan?
Speaker 4 (40:28):
What are we gonna do?
Speaker 3 (40:29):
And you need to game plan because nobody can match
up with Edie.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
Right.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
Well, now you've got Yukon and they've got a seven
foot of their own and a guy with an amazing nickname,
Donovan Donovan Klingon Klingon, and his nickname is kling Kong.
At least I heard Iron Eagle say that. I was like, oh,
I love that cling Klong.
Speaker 4 (40:53):
And he's he's a great he's a really nice youngple.
I think he's.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
Probably a lottery fringe lottery. I don't know he's gonna
be drafted in the top twenty. I don't think Edie
will be. Klingon is very athletic, Oh my gosh, he's
real fun to watch. At any rate, he's gonna play
Edie straight up, you don't need to double. We don't
need to double when we got seven to two against
seven to four. So now you're hugged up on the shooters,
(41:18):
and you know, you go look at Ken palm, look
at the size that Yukon has against those Purdue guards.
It's brutal Castle, who I think is an absolute superstar.
I know some rob might not have seen it, but
when Castle was dominating Alabama, I said, he reminded me
of like a like a combo of Scottie Pippen in
(41:41):
his prime and a young teenage Kobe with a confidence
and swagger that he can take anybody off the dribble
and get whatever he wants. And you know, some people
freaked out anytime you put Kobe's name, but I'm just
telling you, this guy Castle is a beast. He guarded Shannon,
Terry Shann and the kid from Illinois in the Elite eight,
and of course you know Tarren Shannon's scoring machine, unstoppable player.
Speaker 4 (42:05):
He's gonna be a pro.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
I don't know if he's a first round pick because
he's like twenty two to twenty three years old and
Castle totally locked him up. Shannon could do nothing. I'm
talking to Shannon.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
Was like two or fourteen. It was crazy.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
This kid Castle can guard anybody. He started out on sears.
He then got in foul trouble with some dumb fouls.
But I think if you put him on Braden Smith,
like I don't know what Smith does, and Smith already
had a terrible game against NC State and that athleticism
game a problem. So anyways, you got Castle at sixty six,
Cam Spencer six ' four, Tristan Newton, who's a really nice,
(42:38):
well rounded point guard. He's a pro six ' five,
and then Caravan is six ' eight. Okay, listen to
the Purdue height outside of Zachide in the starting line
at Braiden Smith six feet, he's not six feet by
the way, Lance Jones six to one, Fletcher Lawyer six four,
Mason Gillis sixty six, or maybe they start Trey kaufmin Rehn,
the six ' nine guy. But there's just not a
(43:00):
lot of size there, so they're not gonna dominate the
offensive glass. And if you hug up the shooters, now
you're jacking shots over guys who were three four inches
taller than you.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
That's also not easy.
Speaker 3 (43:10):
Bottom line is I think Purdue struggles offensively. Unless something
happens to clinging, foul trouble, whatever, I don't see it
for Purdue.
Speaker 4 (43:21):
So I took the five.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
Maybe Perdue gets out to like a nine to three
start or whatever, and then you can get you kind
of to depressed price and then you can load up.
But I mean, that's what happened against Alabama. Alabama was
up like four. People were like, oh my gosh, there's
gonna be a game. I was like, settle down, and
I added a Yukon minus seven. So I think Yukon's
society here.
Speaker 4 (43:41):
I know that's chalky, but this team is a juggernaut.
Speaker 3 (43:45):
I don't know, Robert, you feel in the same way
like I do like watching Yukon because they're so freaking efficient.
The length in the blocks, when they get the ball
and run half court sets, it's like they're probably scoring here.
Speaker 4 (43:58):
And it was somewhat close Alabama.
Speaker 3 (44:00):
Consider this, rob Alabama was played like they played an
a game in the Final four. They shot forty seven
percent on threes and they lost by fourteen, and it was,
you know, a tough blown cover. But so now, basically
you're telling me Purdue, which struggled against UNC's pressure. And
(44:20):
I know this is the thing, and I'm not gonna
like make it a thing. It is, but the Yukon
pressure is gonna get to these Purdue guards.
Speaker 4 (44:29):
And I know that the Purdue.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
Guards struggled last year against it and the lack of
athleticism or whatever you want to say. And I know
people hate to talk about that and it gets weird,
but you know, because.
Speaker 4 (44:38):
That's essentially people, Oh, that's code for their white and
non athletic.
Speaker 3 (44:41):
Dude, I'm just telling you my men's league team, we
got a white guy who played D three. He's athletic
as hell and could go at anyone and guard anyone.
These Purdue guys are different, and the Yukon guys are
totally different.
Speaker 4 (44:53):
I mean you're talking about Newton Is is a pro.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
He's probably gonna be a first round pick because he
does everything well. Castle, I'm telling you, is a lottery pick.
I think he's top five, probably top three. Klingon is
a first round pick.
Speaker 4 (45:05):
That's they're stacked. And Rob. I don't know if it
was you, might have been me, might have been you.
Speaker 3 (45:12):
Somebody compared this team to UNLV and I think this
Yukon team is the most dominant we've seen since UNLVY.
They've beaten six, five, eleven straight NCAA tournament wins by
double digits. That's not by accident, that's domination. So I
got Yukon. I don't think there's any value on the
money line. I saw it was like minus two eighty
(45:33):
or two seventy five. That's I'm not doing that. So
I don't know yukonnor passed for me.
Speaker 1 (45:40):
I'm laying the level with Yukon, and in my bracket pool,
the one, the one I really care about is the
one that Fox Sports Radio. I'm not gonna win that one,
and I understand even if you kind of wins, I'm
not gonna go too far back. But one thing I
said before the tournament started was if I can beat
either Aaron Torres, friend of the show, or Doug Gottlie,
friend of the Show, two guys who covered college basketball
(46:02):
on a nightly basis for various outlets, if I can,
If I can beat them, me, who's only a casual
college basketball fan, toil the tournament, then I'll be happy
and win or lose with Yukon I'm gonna bet Doug Gottlieb,
So I'm pretty excited about that part.
Speaker 4 (46:17):
I forgot my login. You want to tell me how
poorly I've done.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
Well, you're not gonna win, I'll tell you that much, but.
Speaker 3 (46:23):
I definitely well, now, who's gonna win it? Let me
get Last year it was like t J huschwin Zada.
I think I was in a mixing know who.
Speaker 1 (46:29):
She's in the top five. But it looks like Torres
is gonna win it this year because you know, he's
a Yukon of lump, so he had Yukon riding them
heavy so so that that helped him a lot. But
as far as this Yukon team, this game tonight, to
me is gonna be eerily similar to what we saw
with the ladies game yesterday, where I believe Zach Edy
is the best player in college in college basketball for
(46:51):
the men's side. You know, I know that he might
not be the best pro, but for college basketball, I
believe he's the best player. I thought Caitlin Clark was
the best player for women obviously, but even before the
game started, like, there's no way they're gonna be South Carolina.
South Carolina is too deep, too physical, too athletic, too good,
point blank period. They are the better team. They're going
to win pretty easily. It took them a little bit
(47:12):
longer than I expected to really turn it on, but
they want going away. Yukon same thing. They are too good,
too big, too fast, too talented, too athletic. Zach Edy
is gonna be the best player. I believe he's gonna
have some success when they go one on one against Klingon.
He's gonna do what he does. But that Yukon team
comes at you in waves. They are like I said
(47:34):
about the UH South Carolina team, they are inevitable, like
there's nothing you can do. Eventually, the tidal wave is coming.
Either hits you in the first seven minutes, the last
seven minutes, whatever it comes, it's going to come. And
the Yukon hus he is going back to back.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
Yeah, back to back sounds about right.
Speaker 3 (47:52):
You mentioned Edie best player in the country, So I
don't know if you saw the Tennessee game, but Tennessee elected,
We're just gonna play Edie straight. We're not going to
give the shooters anything. Purdue shot three of fifteen on threes.
It was a one point game with looks like two
and a half left to maybe three and a half.
Speaker 4 (48:12):
Edie went nuclear.
Speaker 3 (48:13):
He played thirty nine minutes and had forty and sixteen
and he made fourteen three throws forty points.
Speaker 4 (48:20):
Rough he ain't scoring forty on clinging. I'm sorry, he's
just not and so I just again not just missing perdue.
It's been an amazing run. I like Edie a lot.
Speaker 3 (48:28):
By the way, we could talk about his future prospects,
but Ta hit me on Twitter and said something interesting.
Speaker 4 (48:33):
He's like, why can't he be brook Lopez in a
few years in the NBA? And I was like, I
had not thought about that.
Speaker 3 (48:42):
I think, you know, in the range of outcomes, that's
probably highly unlikely. But he did note that brook Lopez
at Stanford shooting threes was three of twenty one in
his career. He was an All American and he morphed
wisely into a three point shooter. My issue with Edie
becoming like a three point guy is he lumbers like
(49:02):
brook Lopez is big, but I feel like he's not
as much of a plotter, Like you can't have Zach
d in the corner or it's a four on five
fast break.
Speaker 4 (49:09):
The other way you know, I.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
Visually I'm struggling seeing seven foot four Zach Edy jacking
threes from the top of the key. But again, you
could say the same about Brook Lopez. Yes, my guess
would be that it doesn't happen, and Eddie can make
a ton of money. I don't know his background or ethnicity.
They showed his mom and then I googled it and
she's like six foot three, But he can make a
(49:34):
ton of money in Asia. Being like, I don't know,
he's not gonna be the new Yao Ming, but like
Yao Ming was his size, right.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
Yeah, I mean he could be Stefan Marbury, Stephan Maury
made a hell of a healthy living playing overseas in China.
And again, I don't want to I don't want to
dismiss the idea of him in the NBA entirely, but
you know, case scenario, you can have a lengthy career
playing overseas.
Speaker 3 (49:56):
That yeah, and I don't I would not hope again,
you never I know he's from Canada, but I would
not hope that someone takes him top ten because that's
not gonna work out well. Like that puts a lot
of pressure on him. People will expect a lot of things. Again,
somebody compared him to who was the Lakers guy that
they've traded to the Clippers and kind of regretted it.
Speaker 4 (50:16):
The big boy Zubos Zubots Okay, so it's interesting. I
looked it up.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
Zubots won thirty second overall his first two years. I
think he spent like ninety percent of the time in
the G League. That's fine when you're a thirty second
overall pick sure, and then he would emerge as like, okay,
and he was just doing some things, and then they
traded him.
Speaker 4 (50:33):
He popped in.
Speaker 3 (50:34):
Like year six, five or six, whatever what you want.
Year you want to do, and now he's solid and
he looks like he could be a factor maybe against
Yo Kitchen the playoffs. But Rob, you can do that
when you go thirty second, right, you can't Zack take
Zach Edie in the second round, tenth overall and then
expect him to sit in the G League for two years.
(50:55):
That like, that's not gonna happen. The GM will get fired.
Speaker 4 (50:58):
I feel awful for Edie. Dude, a player of the Year,
I think two years in a row, I don't even know.
And he's one of the great.
Speaker 1 (51:07):
Yeah, totally the great college players we've ever seen.
Speaker 4 (51:10):
You can't put him in the G League. That's just
that's not right.
Speaker 3 (51:13):
I don't think that's right now. I don't think he's
gonna get better now. If you want to say, hey,
he's got to develop a three, that's another story.
Speaker 4 (51:19):
But yeah, I'm rooting for Edie. I like him. I'm
rooting for a while out more.
Speaker 3 (51:22):
Anyways, long long post spring break podcast. No more vacations
coming up anytime soon, so locked in POD's gonna be popping.
Speaker 4 (51:31):
We'll talk to you tomorrow.
