Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're back on the way concept presented by the ring
magazine Massive news in the combat sports world. I have
no time to give you guys a rhyme that switches
on a dime. Shit is sublime. Let's just get into
what we're talking about today. Do UFC breaking news, Turkey
ala Chk breaking news. It was gonna already be a
(00:21):
good summer of fighting, but now it just got even better.
What do I mean the breakdown? Let's go all right,
So let's just go in chronological order. Number one. Turkey Laschk,
as of earlier today, told Mike Coppinger he was going
to make Canello Crawford on Saturday September thirteenth, not September twelfth,
like it was originally planned, which does make sense. Friday
(00:41):
night fights, for that magnitude of a fight when people
are getting off work and everything else, may not be
the best option, but a Saturday night fight does make
a ton of sense. And that their location is still pending.
We all thought this was going to be Allegiance Stadium
in Vegas, and I'm pretty sure that was even announced somewhere,
but now location TV and this is the same night
that uf seen noteesay goes down. So if I am
(01:04):
correct in what I'm thinking here, Dana White, who is
promoting obviously the UFC events, because that's what Dana White does,
He's also now going to be promoting the Terrence Crawford
Canelo Alvarez event. At least that's what was the picture
taken on the top of the Empire State Building Dana
in between Canelo and Terrence Crawford. He's going to promote
two combat sport running simultaneously against each other, maybe on
(01:27):
the same night. This is crazy. So that was the
biggest news to start here. And also the Terrence Crawford
Canilalvarez fight is not going to be on Netflix. This
is going to be on pay per view, which again
is a change. This was supposed to be on Netflix
from what I understood now, it's not. Some changes coming
here again, think of them what you will. I'm just
here to tell you guys exactly what's going down. So
(01:48):
that's the big thing to start. Changes coming for Terrence
Crawford and Canilo Alvarez. But then Uncle Dana said, uh,
We're not finished yet, because then he dropped an absolute
new govern announcement, well multi announcements later on today he
dropped what we all assumed was happening. But now it's official.
Ilia Tuporia taken on Charles Olavera. But here's a twist.
(02:10):
UFC three seventeen International Fight Week, it's not for an
interim belt at lightweight ladies and gentlemen. It is now
confirmed that Ilia Tuporia and Charles Lavera will be fighting
for the UFC Lightweight Championship of the World, meaning Islam
Makachev has vacated his one fifty five belt to go
up and take on Jack Dela Mattlanta. This is massive
(02:33):
because a lot of people were assuming that this was
going to be a double champ situation. What this tells
me is the two belt era is over in the UFC.
That's what this tells me. This is no longer even
a question in my mind because you look at Ilia Tuporia,
who moved up from one forty five, they wouldn't let
him keep the belt and simultaneously challenged for the one
(02:53):
to fifty five belt. Now Islam, who has at one
fifty five cleaned out the top five, has every reason
to Under the old rules of the two belt system,
you know you can go and challenge for that second belt.
Get your picture made with both the goal on shoulders,
either of which I have. You guys know this, mister
no shoulder that used to be the rule. Turns out
that's not the case anymore. The UFC is going away
(03:14):
from that, and I honestly don't mind it. It's been
such a thing for fighters to reach for him and
we talk about pound for pound, how it meant to
be a simultaneous two division belt holder. It never really
meant as much to me and still doesn't now as
it does to get fun matchups right. The belts, yes,
are important because there is one belt. When you have
(03:34):
a guy holding up two different divisions trying to hold
on to both belts, it makes things less important and
we don't get the fights we want. The two belt
eraw was fun while it lasted, but now you're not
gonna get divisions held up. That's a cool part about it.
The other cool part about this is we get a
ton of announcements for the UFC three seventeen cars. Let's
run through those. The co main events for the flyweight title.
(03:54):
Antojia Versus Kaikr of France Banger middleweight bout in the
co CO main or just the undercard as most people
call it, Costa versus copylv Yes, please, may I have another? Sure?
A lightweight bout between Daryush and moy Kano, we like that.
A flyweight bout between Brandon roy Val mnel Cap we
like that. And Jack R. Manson taking on RoboCop, we
(04:16):
like all of that. That is a big time International
Fight Week card. I think those matchups are gonna create
fireworks for the UFC. Some name value on there as well,
from the top to the bottom of the card, or
at least top to the bottom of the main card.
Who knows what'll be on the prelimbs. That's a banger
for the UFC. So they could have just left it
there right and we're gonna get to the other big
announcements coming. But we have some talk and some chirping
(04:37):
going on as this card was announced, because Elliott Taporia
got on Twitter and said, well, Charles, my apologies in advance.
I'm just fighting for my dreams. It's unfortunate that Makachev
ran away. Elli is the last guy to say this
because Makachev, unlike Taporia, had defended his belt at one
fifty five multiple times and it beat pretty much everybody
in the top five that could challenge him, and he
was starting to have rematches and potential rematches things that
(05:00):
weren't It wasn't gonna be as interesting as potentially him
moving up the weight was becoming harder for him to make.
We get all that, but Iliat also left forty five
and gave up his belt when other potential challengers could
have arisen there as well. Right like, do you see
somebody like Diego Lopez Go, Ilia ran away from me,
so I gotta fight Voltan're not seeing mobs are say, hey,
you know Ilia ran away from me when Mobbsar should
(05:20):
have probably had the title shot versus Vulk or the
vacant title fight versus Volks. So it's good narrative because
Illia obviously moved up to fight Islam Makachev and called
him out directly, and Makachev said, nah, you know, I'm
going to one seventy. I would have liked to have
seen that fight. I hope that one day we still
do get that fight, although I don't think Ilia could
get to one seventy and still be his his peak self,
So we'll see. But I like it. I like the banter.
(05:43):
I like the fight between Ilia and Charles. This is
another one that I think is super interesting. Charles, with
a lanky frame, does like to scrap, good hands, good feet.
He seems to figure out even the best strikers on
the feet. I mean he's ran through the last two
at forty five Vulcan Max Holloway, and they both had
their successes and failures at fifty five as well. So
Charles now getting a title shot after he had waited
(06:03):
for so long against let's say a freshman debutante at
one fifty five, even though Ilia has fought at one
fifty five before, and I think he got head kicked
in that fight. Was that the Ji Herbert fight where
he got head kicked? Maybe not point being this will
be an interesting move for Ilia. Does his power carry?
Does his ability to take shots Carrie, because sometimes he
does take some punches to get to the points where
(06:25):
he can get his head off center and really tag people.
And I'm right about the last fight he had at
one fifty five being the Gi Herbert fight. It's the
last fight he got hurt in got hit with a
nasty head kick and it rocked him. He won the fight,
but you get what I'm saying. And on the other side,
Charles been around in the UFC for a while now, right,
a veterans veteran. As he gets up there in age
and experience, what do we still have there? Obviously the
(06:45):
Islam fight didn't go his way, and there was a
time there where Charles looked unbeatable. His striking is great,
his grappling is great, especially off his back. But talking
about a Georgian grappler in iliod Tuporia and they seem
to have the answers when it comes to even the
daggis Danny style grappling. If you look at Morob and
how he grappled uh Nerman gavedof so again love the matchup.
(07:06):
Would have loved Ilia and Islam more for sure. But
I love this one and it means we get Islam
going up and taking the Jack Dela Medalane fight. I
want to see what Islam looks like at one seventy.
And by the way, this doesn't mean that Islam couldn't
come back down. Let's say he goes up and is
unsuccessful versus Jack Dela Medalane. Although I don't know about
that one. I think it's gonna be a banger of
a fight, and he's a tough matchup for Jack and
(07:26):
Jack is for him vice versa. But let's say he
doesn't get it done, whos stopping Islam from coming back
and potentially fighting the winner of Ilia Charles again, right,
that can definitely happen. And if you think Ilia is
gonna win that fight, then we get the Ilia in
Islam fight. Any point is I think we all knew
this announcement was coming. We didn't know that we were
gonna get the full kind of card there as well,
but uh, that's pretty sick. So three seventeen gets announced.
(07:46):
I think for everybody else we knew that three eighteen
with Max Holloway, Dustin Poier BMF Belt on the line,
Dustin Poier's retirement fight, that one sells itself. We love
both those fighters. It is a babyface versus baby face.
One guy losing is gonna hurt people, but it's gonna
be bittersweet because the guy that wins is gonna have
a massive w dustin on his way out, Max solidifying
(08:08):
himself at one fifty five. Either way, it's gonna be
a banger. But then we got another big boy announcement, Ladies,
and gentlemen, because drikis duples C, we'll take on Hamza
Chimayev for the middleweight title at UFC three nineteen in Chicago, Illinois,
August sixteenth. Babe, this one right here tickles my fancy,
(08:29):
not the way my girl does. She's in the bathroom
doing her thing thing. I mean in the fight fields.
This tickles my fancy like nothing else right now, because
how can you not love this matchup dupleus C Hamzad.
It felt like it was Hamza's time to finally get
his chance. Honestly, it has felt like that for a bit.
For Hamza. I'm just knock on wood, pray to whatever
(08:50):
you believe in that this fight goes through because we've
had both guys had some injury issues in the past,
obviously Hamza pulling out of a couple of different fights.
But it's time now. This is the fight to make
hamzat After the Robert Whitaker splitting of his whole jawline
and face structure, drickis continuing to find ways to employ
the best base for Mma, which is just be a
(09:12):
spaz and also be a high level fighter. On top
of that, both guys, it feels like in their prime
right now. A lot of people thinking that hamza Chimaia
is the answer for Drickis' unorthodox grappling to striking, striking
and grappling, and we'll see, because Hamzat sometimes gets a
little taste of being on the feet and getting in
striking battles the Gilbert Burns fight, and things don't necessarily
(09:34):
go his way if he sticks with the grappling. I
think a lot of people are gonna say the wolf
is coming right. But regardless, these are the type of
fights that major MMA fans. These are the type of
matchups that kept you coming back, and this is what
people have been asking for the UFC to do for
a very very long time. Banger of a fight and
that's three bangers of fights back to back to back.
(09:55):
And then we got one more little tease and this
was all from Dana White's Instagram Live. We'reing out some
of this, but here's another little tease because this is
the question everybody's been asked. All this week. We've been
seeing John Jones is out in Thailand doing god knows what.
He was on a moped, grabbing a guy by the
back of his hair and holding on to his waist
while he grabbed his hair from behind as they sped off.
Make of that what you will. But Dana was on
(10:15):
his Instagram live LEO play the video because my computer
just died and I can't play it. Here's what Dana
had to say about the matchup.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
To I'm asping All. I didn't read it. I told
you guys already. We'll get Aspinall versus Jones done, John
Jones versus Ah. The heavyweight fight will happen. Relax, I'll
announce that soon.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
I don't understand it. This was the time for me.
I'm not gonna sit here and complain because they did
drop a ton of good fights, but this was the
time to announce John versus Tom Aspinall. Sometime in the
latter part of the year November time frame, right, is
your big fight. Maybe they're holding it, I guess until
the end of the year. They usually stack that last
(11:00):
pay per view of the year, right the December slash
New Year card. They've stacked it for years and years,
and they've kind of stopped that over the last couple
Maybe they're getting back to that. Maybe that's what they're
holding it for. But it has to be soon. This
fight has to happen. I would say, either right before
the year ends or before you get into twenty twenty six,
because what the fuck is Tom Aspinall doing If he's
(11:22):
sitting here for the last year plus waiting for John Jones.
The heavyweight division is more stagnant than my hips. When
my favorite song comes on and I'm on the dance floor,
it just don't happen. I can't continue seeing this kind
of thing happening. It's it's either strip John or make
the bow. And Dana is saying, you guys saw the
video that they're working on it, that it's going to happen,
(11:42):
that everybody needs to relax. Fans can't relax because there
is no confirmation of what the division that you should
value most in combat sports, the big boys, the heavyweights,
the baddest men on the planet is even doing. I
don't know why. That's a hard thing to grasp for
everybody there, But it's a simple thing. Either strip John
or make the fight. And if is playing games and
(12:05):
he wants his thirty million, which I yeah, okay, I
think John should get his thirty million. They should pay
him his thirty million for sure for this fight. For sure.
And honestly, I am not with everybody else, and I
know I'm gonna get hate for this. I don't think
the fight is as one sided as everybody else thinks.
I think John has a massive chance to beat Tom aspinall,
I think there's definitely places where John has strengths that
(12:26):
it isn't just a one way traffic. John just smokes
him and around like people are overlooking who John Jones is,
even at his older age, as fighters tend to age
a little later at heavy. My point in all this is, though,
please please make that fight. And I'm not trying to
take the whole video away because again, massive announcements Iliot Tuporia,
Charles Lavera for the actual one fifty five belt in
(12:47):
the UFC, the best in the world at won fifty five.
I assume at some point Jack Dela Madelena Islam Makacheff.
That's the reason he moved up, vacated the belt. No
more two belt era, no more double champ. I'm okay
with that, less held up divisions, more fights we want
to see. That's the way I look at it. Middleweight
title on the line August sixteenth, trick is Tuo plus
see Hamza Chamaya of the fight we want to see.
(13:08):
All those things are good fights, and we get at
least one fight that we've been begging for two plus
CE and hamsach Chamayah. The UFC just needs to do
one more thing to make it complete, to bring back
the feel of what fans are bubbling over in this
summer to fall stretch. They're giving us three twenty or
three twenty one. I better see John Jones and Tom Aspen.
(13:31):
That would make it a perfect year for MM, but
is almost always in combat sports, none of us really
have the answers to what happens next. All these announcements
are great, knock on wood, they all happen, I think,
but there's one still missing, and I do think it
needs to happen in the next six to eight months,
because if not, you might as well book Tom Aspen
all was surreal gone and get John out of here
(13:52):
stripping with the belt, have him retire whatever else he
wants to do. But he can't continue holding up heavyweight
because it's the most important division in MMA and it's
not getting its due. And tom aspinall and his prime
is not getting his due, and that's a damn sit
and speaking of massive events, July twelfth, The Ring Magazine
is putting on a card again in New York Edgar Berlanga,
(14:13):
Hamza Sharaz. That's one main event. Here's the second one,
Schaquor Stevenson, Williams of Peta Banger Ring right there, Alberto
Pueo Subrio, Mattias Banger right there, all on the same card,
live from New York. And as you're seeing this video, tomorrow,
I am going to be holding a press conference including
those two main events, talking to them Eddie hearn Oscar
(14:34):
de la Joya and getting their thoughts on their opponents.
For Shakour, why is he going to be able to
stop Williams of Peeda, who brings the fight to everybody,
who just beat Tevin Farmer twice to get that WBC
Interim championship. He's looking to take Shakur's off. And we
know the stuff that people say about Shakor. We know
that they say he's got hands like paper mache, that
he doesn't want to engage, that he's on the back
(14:56):
foot slick. And we just saw the Devin Haney Express
roll through town and people didn't really feel great about that.
So how's he gonna be different in this fight. He
says he's bringing it this time around, and I'm looking
forward to it. I'm gonna ask him. And then the
other main event, you got Edgar Berlanga, fresh off the
twelve rounds with Canelo and a knockout victory right after that.
We know he's got stone in his hands and he's
trying to represent his hometown of New York City and
(15:18):
work his way back through the ranks of super middleweight
one sixty eight and his opponent tomsu shiraz Is making
his debut at one sixty eight after the draw with
Carlos Adamis over in Riata. It was a tough fight
for him. A lot of things that think he even
says that he can do differently, and a guy that
is known is a big time puncher in his own
right didn't really show that in his last fight. How
(15:38):
is he gonna be different against Edgar Berlanga. Both guys
are gonna be talking their stuff. You know, Edgar's definitely
going to and I'm gonna try to mediate all of
it again. Another massive event in the Combats sports world,
brought to you by The Ring Magazine and as much
as people don't want to talk about it. I'm gonna
Jake Baul, Juliosser, Chavez Junior that press conference. I'll probably
have a video on that out as well. It's just
(15:59):
a hot time to be a combat sports fan right here,
right now. You guys don't believe me, stay tuned because
we're gonna cover all of it, as far as what happens,
who wins, what fights, how it shakes out, where the
belt holders in the UFC after this stretch, who's gonna
make their way up to super middleweight and potentially challenge
the Canelo and Terrence Crawford winner. I don't have those answers.
(16:20):
What I do know is you better buckle up because
combat sports is about to get white hot if it
wasn't already, and you don't want to miss who takes
advantage of it, who stakes their claim and makes their
name in both the UFC, boxing and everything in between.
Don't have those answers, but I guess we'll find out
