Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, folks, we are back on the way concept
(00:01):
presented by the Ring Magazine. And today I'm a little
bit late to the news, but it's it's no longer
breaking news. But Terrence Crawford Canelo Alvarez are apparently in
talks for a rematch in twenty twenty six. And my
only question is why why Outside of a massive payday,
the first fight wasn't necessarily a competitive fight, and if
they do it again, I think it's going to be
(00:22):
less competitive. I don't think this is going to go
very well for one Sahou Canel Alvarez, and I'll tell
you why the breakdown. Let's go all right. So, like
I said, the Ring Magazine reporting as of about four
days ago, now I'm a little late to the news,
but Canelo Alvarez wants Terrence Crawford rematch, says negotiations are
underway for twenty twenty six. Now, first off, I expect
(00:45):
nothing less from Canelo. He wants to get that fight
back because well, number one, it's a somewhat advantageous matchup
at one sixty eight for him, and there's not many
other matchups at one sixty eight for Canelo right now
that offer him any sort of advantages. Imagine you try
to put him in there with the year rise or
someone with a bigger frame, longer, taller. I mean, even
David Benavidez before he went and knocked out and absolutely smoked.
(01:08):
Anthony Yard was saying, you know, I'm still entertaining the
potential of a Canelo fight. There's not many other people
at one sixty yet. I mean maybe if you did
Chris Hubank Junior. But after he loses to Connor Ben,
what does that fight really even mean? Canello says, I
want my run back, I want my get back, but
I gotta be honest, I just I don't know how
this goes well for Canelo in a rematch. Honestly, you
(01:29):
will look at the first fight and the things that
plagued Canelo were essentially the things that plague him against
most boxers. His flat feet, his lack of movement, his
lack of volume. He couldn't get to Terrence, he was
over extending, he was getting caught with counter shots as
he overextended. The big shown around memed and replayed moment
of the fight is Canelo trying to throw a hook
(01:50):
in a right hand and Terrence Crawford slipping on the
outside and banging the left hand counter behind it. Canello
was beaten to the punch from distance, he was beaten
in exchanges, and even in points in the fight, he
was beaten inside by Terrence Crawford. This was a I
wouldn't say dominant, but I would say more one sided
than I thought when for Terrence Crawford where he flat
out out box Canelo and he took Canelo's power like
(02:13):
there were times where Canelo landed the big right hand
and Terrence Crawford took it. So what would be different
if they fought again. The only different thing that potentially
could happen would be in Canelo's hands. He would have
to find ways to be different. And as much as
I would love to believe that it's possible Canelo getting
up there in age, I understand Terrence Crawford is older,
but Terrence Crawford already fights at a way that's advantageous
(02:33):
versus Canelo. He doesn't really have to change much, and
he's fighting up a couple of weight classes from where
he normally did, so he doesn't have to really worry
about a weight cut either, and he's filled into that
weight class because he looked just as big, if not bigger,
that Canelo Alvarez did on fight night. So the question
is what would Canelo do differently? I the only thing
that I could see that Canelo may be able to
do some different things with Number One, he did get
(02:56):
elbow surgery on his lead elbow. This was on October
twenty fifth. Apparently also had a new child, so congrats
to Canelo on the new baby, but he also had
dielbow surgery. He is now, I guess rehabbing that four
to six weeks for him to resume training, So it's
not getting in the way of something in twenty twenty six.
But what I realistically think Canelo could and should and
would do differently for this fight is he would have
(03:19):
to fight Terrence Crawford like he fought Sergei Kovalev at
one seventy five. That's genuinely what he would have to do.
He'd have to be lighter on his feet, he'd have
to throw more combinations, and he'd have to be quicker
with his hands as he was in that fight. And
I'm not saying that he changes everything about himself. Canello
had success in moments with Bud Crawford, but that's what
(03:39):
he would have to do in some right. He would
have to be able to add layers to his game
and not be so flat footed. And if he's going
to combination punch, he's got to do so in the
fire with Terrence Crawford, which going into the first fight,
I didn't think Terrence Crawford was going to have as
much success with his combination punching because he'd have to
be in front of the powerful hands of Canelo. But
again he was able to do so off the back
(04:00):
foot and front because Canelo threw one at a time.
He threw the jab or the right hand, or he
threw the hook right hand, and again Terrence Crawford remained
mostly south paw, which does give Canelo problems because now
he has to lead with his backhand versus punctuate with it,
and his jab gets neutralized and it's just a mess
of a fight for Canelo, it really is. I hate
that he wants to get that back, and the matchup
(04:21):
itself is again one of the only ones that Canelo
can still have make a shit ton of money and
potentially not completely kill his star power should he lose.
He still has I think a couple more fights with
the Ring magazine and Riodd season that he needs to
fulfill his contract. So if he's able to get the
rematch with Terrence, from his perspective, I understand it, but
(04:43):
you have to shed some light on the reality of
this fight should it happen. This is one of those
fights where we've seen the stylistic difference and we've seen
the advantages that Terrence Crawford has, and again it's not
even just like boxing acumen. It's the the intangibles too.
It's Bud's reed, it's his boxing IQ, it's the switching
his stance, but it's also his timing. It's also his
(05:05):
feet and his understanding of where he's safe versus where
he's not, and how he kind of schooled Canelo a
little bit in that first fight when it came to
the Marcus of Queensberry boxing, right, Canelo was big, and
he was brooding, and he was trying to out physical Terrence,
and Terrence was letting him do all of that. Be
stagnan at b flat foot it walk forward and throw
his combination, pivot, throw his combination, or even in moments
(05:26):
in the fight. I think it was round nine, he
sat down in the pocket and was catching things on
the gloves and turning with shots and firing back and
all of that was just boxing one oh one, and
Canelo was visibly frustrated by it, visibly pissed off that
he couldn't get to Terrence Crawford. He got hit with
some punches and was like, I mean, locked back in.
You don't see Canelo like that a lot, and it's
the frustration of not being able to figure out that puzzle.
(05:47):
And that was the first time he saw him. And
maybe you could say, listen, Canelo just needed to see
him one time to figure out that puzzle, right. He
figured out Triple G was able to re implement it
in the rematch, and then the third fight it was
not even a great fight. Canelo just did what he wanted.
But this is not the case I don't think with Crawford.
I think Crawford just has a style that is really,
(06:08):
really tough for Canelo, and I'll be honest, if they
fought again, it would be more dominant for Terrence Crawford.
I truly think if if in twenty twenty six they
booked this rematch, I think Crawford dominates him even worse.
And I'm not saying he stops Canelo because I don't
know if that's something that Terrence could get at one
sixty eight, because Canelo's chance is still really never been
tested like that, Like he didn't really get hurt in
(06:28):
the Crawford fight. He just got out boxed. But maybe
maybe he potentially would be able to stop him. But
I just think it would be more one sided than
we saw in the first fight and would just re
establish that Terrence Crawford is that fucking guy in this
sport right now, the top guy, the head honcho in
this sport, which is I don't know, I mean, is
it dangerous to Canelo's legacy to lose to the best
(06:50):
of this era and the best of the era previously?
I don't know, Like did Canelo ever have an era
where he was the best in the world. Maybe that's
the question he's still trying to answer himself and why
he would want this rematch with Crawford. But when I
see this news coming out of him wanting the rematch
having the elbow surgery, maybe in his mind going, Okay,
my elbow wasn't fresh, wasn't able to turn my shots over,
(07:11):
so That's why I can win this rematch. I like
the competitive nature of it. I don't like the fight
for him. I think the matchup's all wrong for Canelo.
I think this style of fight, in terms of what
Terrence Crawford does well is counter punching off the front
and back foot, his ability to go from range with
his jab, be inside with it to protect himself, catch
counter with punches. He's got just a different timing than
(07:32):
Canelo really has on his punches. And then you pair
it with the volume that Terrence Crawford can throw and
his feet and his angles. This is the bad matchup
for Canelo. We've seen it already and I just don't
know if the rematch goes any differently. I think Terrence
Crawford would have Canelo in real trouble the second time around.
And again I'm not gonna sit here and be like
he knock him out cold because Canelo's got an iron chin.
(07:54):
But if he didn't already in the first fight, he
would do a number texas instruments eighty three plus on
Canelo if they rematch. I truly believe that because I
think the matchup's all wrong. I think that both guys
learned something about the other in that fight. And the
guy that took more away as far as data and
things to use was Terrence Crawford, because what Canelo brought
was the best version of him and it wasn't enough.
(08:15):
And if Terrence brought the best version of him, and
it was enough, because I think both guys brought their
best version, but the fight played out how the styles
will always match up. Canelo is best when a guy
will stand in front of him and go upper body movement,
planted feet, let's fight exclusively in the Foam book. Terrence
Crawford is at his best when he can dog walk
someone walk the dog on him, literally have them on
(08:36):
a leash, walking around the ring, and then planting his feet, throwing, circling,
fainting off the back foot, then coming back counterpunches. He
has every tool in the shed, and I just I
think skill wise and stylistically, Canelo just doesn't. And so
I will watch the rematch and I'll be excited to
see Canelo and see what adjustments he can make. I'm
not saying Canelo can't make adjustments, but isn't a young
(08:58):
Canelo we're talking about and his dial of fighting. I
just think is all wrong for Terrence Crawford. But you guys,
let me know what you think. This rematch is apparently
being discussed right now, negotiations underway. What is next for
Terrence Crawford, Because we had heard Terrence Crawford was gonna
go to one sixty and potentially fight one of the
champions down there and become a four division world champion.
Is he still gonna do that or is he gonna
(09:18):
say you know what, Canelo, Yeah, I'll take that bag
and run this back. I'm speech you. Once I found
the blueprint, I can do it again. My opinion, he
probably should take the rematch for the money that's probably
gonna be offered for that. But I don't know. You guys,
let me know. If they do rematch, who do you
got and why is it Terrence Crawford by absolute domination?
That's what I think. But have those answers, so I
guess we'll find out
