Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, Elliott, I be today. Our episode featuring Amelia Earhart
and Michael Jordan's is all about reaching those great heights,
both metaphorically and literally. And then, of course there's the
fun similarity with air Heart and air Jordan's. Oh wow,
I never thought of that. Do you think they're related?
Nob air Jordan's isn't his last name? It's a shoe
(00:22):
beazoom tight. But Elliott, you really shouldn't sneeze on the mic.
Oh wow, Eric, please play us in please here. What
do you think you know about the game is to
get some gene burkle up your brain because it's signed
(00:44):
to play the most podcast. Because it's time to play
Who Live from Tom Bland or so called so Cow
Los Angeles. Welcome to Who Was That? The history quiz
show that gives contestants that ants to win mega prizes
and podcast glri. I'm b your announcer who floats like
(01:06):
a butterfly and stings like a jellyfish. And here's your host,
runner up for Cincinnati's Best Volunteer Library Assistant three years
in a row. It's Elliott Kalin. Thank you be and
everyone listening. I got a good feeling about this year.
I'm gonna win that award and welcome to the Who
Was Podcast. This show it's like Jeopardy, only with surprise guests,
(01:28):
silly games, and frankly a slightly less intimidating name. I know,
I find it more welcoming. Our contestants here were sent
Who Was books about two great figures from history. Now
they're here to show off their knowledge in the hopes
of winning fantastic prizes. They will see us waving from
such great Heights today when we discussed Amelia Earhart and
Michael Jordan's. But before we get to know about them,
(01:50):
let's get to know our contestants. First. Up we have
Max Max please introduce yourself. Hi. I'm Max. I am
twelve and I like doing ski jumping. It's this really
interesting type of jumping where you go off ramp and
it's really fun, exciting and keeping on our such Great
(02:11):
Heights theme because I bet you catch a lot of
air off those rants. Thank you, Max. Oh yeah. And
up next we have Amelia. Amelia please introduce yourself. Hi.
My name's Amelia. I'm eleven years old. I'm from New
Jersey and I have not one, not to but three
younger brothers. Oh my gosh, Amelia, I can't believe it's
(02:33):
quiet enough to record in your house today. That's so,
that's so unusual. How are you doing with all of
those brothers. We have our moments where it's not as
good as it is right now. Well, thank you so
much both for being with us, and thank you to Eric,
our musician, for providing that lovely Meet the Contestants music,
as well as all the music we're gonna here on
the show today. So that's who is Now, let's find
(02:54):
out who was Amelia Earhart with four fast facts us.
She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic,
she set records for flying speed, and the first person
to fly solo from the US to Hawaii, and she
started her own airline. Most people remember her for the
(03:16):
last event in her life, when Amelia Earhart mysteriously disappeared
while completing a trip around the world. But we want
to focus on everything that happened before that. Although I
think I might know where Amelia is. Amelia, are you
Amelia Earhart? Yeah, that's up. Well, there goes that theory.
I guess it's still a history's mystery unsolved this very day.
(03:37):
You know, Amelia was incredibly famous in her day. If
she were around now, we're pretty sure she'd be sending
tweets on Twitter like all the other major celebrities. Or
she'd be coming up with dances on tik tak. You
mean TikTok? Why do I look like a clock? Okay,
speaking of time, it's time we get to our first
game hashtag history. His hashtag history hashtag hashtag In this game,
(04:05):
B will read you a hashtag Amelia Earhart would have
used during her life if there was social media, and
you will tell us what it's about, what it's referring to.
Take it away. Be okay, Max, This first question is
for you. Our first hashtag is hashtag friendship goals. I
think that is when she was talked to Netta. I
(04:28):
think that's what her name was, her friend when she
first learned about flying. It's a very good guest, but
unfortunately it's not what we're looking for with this one.
The friendship was actually the airplane Amelia took on that
first flight across the Atlantic. Making it to the other
side was definitely hashtag friendship goals. But nice try. Next
question is for Amelia. Our next hashtag is hashtag problems. Okay,
(04:55):
so was the name of the group that Amelia had formed,
and the name was flopping from like eighty three to
seven and they finally settled on ninety nine. That's right.
The ninety nine was the group of over two hundred
female pilots that Amelia Heart became the president of. This
organization helped female pilots find employment and community with other
(05:18):
female pilots. That was great. Next question is for Max.
This hashtag is hashtag all the single Ladies. I think
that's when she turned down so many marriages from many
different guys. That's right. Amelia turned down several marriage proposals
to focus on her career, which was not the thing
that women were expected to do at the time. She
later married her manager, George Putnam, but they both agreed
(05:40):
that Amelia would put her career first. Take that, George,
great answer, Max. Next question is for Amilia Amelia. This
hashtag is hashtag snooky Um. I think it was like
the name of her plane or something. Oh sorry, That
hashtag refers to Amelia's first flying teacher, Netta Snook, another
pioneering female a Theator. It's who Max was talking about earlier.
(06:03):
By strange coincidence, hashtag hashtag and that Jam tells us
that's the end of the game. This is so exciting.
Producer Jamee will tally with the scores. Well, we take
a short break. Welcome back to the Who Was? Podcast? Everyone, Jane,
(06:28):
are you ready with those scores? These scores are up
in the air right now, the games anyone's the score
is one to one. That's Max with one, Amelia with one.
Thank you, Jane. It's a great game we've got going.
It's a tie right now. Will it remain a tie?
I don't know. I can't tell the future. How could
this game get any better? Though? Oh man, I'm so
(06:49):
glad you asked Elliott, because we have a very special
guest joining us, the woman who puts the heart and
air heart be that's not how hard it felt? Okay,
well maybe it should be. It's that ace E Vatrix herself,
Amelia air Heart. Curtesye if everybody's favorite time telephone? Who
was that? Who Was? Wanderings? Oh wow, I cannot believe
(07:18):
you're here with us today, miss air Heart. Listen Busta.
I've traveled through air, oversea and on land. I couldn't
resist a chance to travel through time, miss air Hurtle,
you tell us about flying all by yourself across the
Atlantic Ocean. Your don juting, I will there are was
all alone, fifteen hours in the air with nothing below
me but the Brianity. Fifteen hours. It's a long flight.
(07:40):
You must have watched a lot on movies on that flight.
What movies on an aerial plane? You twenty one century
people are goofy when I have fel across the Atlantic.
I couldn't get distracted even for a moment, fifteen hours
of intense focus. Hey, Amelia, can you tell this mug
what would happen if I flew too high? Um? You
(08:00):
would die? Yes, I love it. I love a lady
who's short and succinct and to the point my wings
would ice up and I would die. And Max, can
you tell this tabioca Sam? What would happen if I
flew too low? Would your instruments not work? Ding? Ding ding?
That's right, my instruments wouldn't work. I couldn't stop for
(08:21):
a working moment, and those fifteen hours went by a
real slow. But you did have snacks, right, horse feathers.
All I had was chicken soup for a sipping. But
chickens can't fly. Wouldn't have help more if you had
some duck souper, maybe alvatross soup of flying bird soup. Oh, dreepers,
creepers would a maroon? Maybe our contestants have some thoughts
(08:42):
on what you could do to keep from falling asleep
on that flight, Amelia, what do you do on long
trips to keep from getting bored or any time that
you kind of have to stop yourself and falling asleep?
Do you have a trick for that? Listen to music
and like mouth the words. I mean that that sounds good,
Amelia Earhart, this time, Eric, could you have listened to
music while you're on the plane? Oh my goodness. No,
(09:03):
you can't hear anything over the plane's engines, which is
sometimes actually why I liked it. I couldn't hear my
own thoughts. I couldn't hear my own sadness. I just
had to be one with the plane. Come back to us, Amilia,
Come back to us, I understand, Come back to us.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I was going off
in a different direction and it wasn't north by northwest
(09:25):
or south by southeast or south by south north directions.
Those are all real directions. I'll have you know next.
Do you have any tricks for for keeping from getting
bored when you're when you're getting bored on a long
trip or something like that. I think my younger brother
is also unboard, nous I need oh now, okay, so
your younger brother keeps you awake? Definitely? Oh my goodness. Now,
(09:49):
I was around for the early part of flying, and
one of the things that people used to do was
kick the back of other people's seats. Now and only
hope that in this day and age everyone has grown
out of that. Is that true? Yes, it's practically a
sport by now. It's practically a sport by now. Well,
I hope they let women play because we would definitely
(10:11):
win the gold medal in that in seed kicking in
seed kicking, yes for sure. Oh yeah, well, we're almost
out of time. Only, is there anything else you wanted
to tell our listeners? Maybe something nice about me since
you've been kind of insulting to me up until now. No, okay,
I think it's time to say goodbye to Amelia. Are heard? Everybody? Alright?
All right now, Tululu, you two have been the feast knees.
(10:34):
Thank you? Who was out? Oh my goodness, Amelia Earhart
was just talking about my knees. No, no, no, be
The bee's knees is an expression. It means something exceptional.
And speaking of exceptional, let's get to know today's other
great figure, Michael Jordan's. Okay, now let's be clear as
(11:00):
not to alarm our listeners. Michael Jordan's is still alive
and well as we record this episode. Yes, but sometimes
on who was the contributions of an individual are so
great we want to celebrate them asap. We don't want
to wait. And if there's one person in recent sports
history who meets that mark, it's Michael Jordan's perfect basketball sound.
(11:21):
And now it's time for Michael Jordan's for fast facts past.
Michael Jordan was captain of the legendary Chicago Bulls basketball team.
He was a winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
He earned six NBA Championship rings, more than fit on
one hand, and he was a gold medalist pass. But honestly,
(11:44):
he's such an accomplished athlete. It's just a small sample
of his achievements that we've mentioned, more than you can
fit into four fast facts box out, double dribble all
you and I think that's basketball talk. For It's time
for our next game. Let's get ready for a slam
dunk free throw? Or about I love using sports words. Okay,
(12:11):
here's how the game is going to work. B will
make a statement about Michael Jordan's and this statement will
either be completely true, half true, or totally false. If
you think that the statement is completely true, you will
say that the statement is a slam dunk. And if
you think the statement is half true, you will say
that it is a free throw. And finally, if you
(12:31):
think that the statement is completely false, you will guess
that the statement is a foul. What for each correct response,
you will learn two points, just like a shot in basketball. Okay, Max,
here is the first statement. Michael Jordan one signed a
deal with Nike to release shoes and other products centered
around him called Air Jordan's. Is it a slam dunk
(12:54):
free throw or a fout slam dunk? Shar That's right,
It's a slam dunk. It's true. My Jordan's started the
trend of basketball players signing deals with sneaper brands when
he signed a contract with Nike back in This was
an especially big deal because he hadn't even played a
single game in the NBA yet. I wish someone would
give me a shoe deal. I've never played any games ever. Alright, Amelia,
(13:17):
here is your statement. After retiring from the NBA, Michael
Jordan also ran a bicycling business called Michael's Bichael's. That's right,
it's a foul. Michael never ran a bicycle shop called
Michael's Bikels, But I'm not gonna lie. That would have
been a really cool name for a bicycle company. He's
still around. I hope he does it. Oh yeah, alright, Max,
(13:38):
back to you. Here's a statement. At one point, Michael
left the game of basketball to start a new athletic
career and play football, only to go back to basketball.
That is free throw. He did leave basketball for a
little bit, but not football. That's right. That's really right,
they answer his free throw. It's only half true. Well,
Michael did leave the game of basketball. He left to
(13:59):
play aceball, not football. He left in play a little
bit of baseball, got tired of baseball and returned to
the Chicago Bowls in. It was an eventful couple of
years for him. A baseball The thinking man's football. Amelia,
here is your next statement. In the nineties, Michael made
a movie that featured him playing basketball with Bugs money
(14:19):
called Space Jam Slam Dunk. That's right, that answer is
a slam dunk. Not only did Space Jam the movie
make over two hundred and thirty million dollars at the
box office, but Michael Jordan actually had a basketball court
built next to the studio so he could continue to
practice playing basketball when he wasn't filming. And I think
he and Bugs are still friends to this very day.
That's sweet. Ah. Yes, the sound of Air Jordan's squeaking
(14:45):
on a basketball court means the game is over. Let's
go to producer Jane with the scores. Well, this may
come as a shock, Elliott, but now Amelia has six
points while Max has six points. Thank you Jane. Wow,
it is still anyone's game as we go into the break.
But before we go, we've got a question for our
(15:05):
contestants and our audience to ponder. This is for Max
and Amelia. We're going to give you time to write
down your answers during the break and then you'll share
them with us when we come back. Here's the question,
So listen, carefully. A common basketball move is called pivoting.
When a player stands still and steps with one foot
to change direction, that's a pivot. Michael Jordan had to
(15:27):
pivot or change direction many times over the course of
his career. Can you list three of them? Bonus points?
If you can name times that Amelia Earhart had to
pivot as well, think about it. We'll right back. Hey,
(15:52):
who Was? Ers? Want to make a shout out to
your own favorite person history, famous or unfamous. Do you
think your sour don't recipe is better than ours? Would
you like to tell us your craziest dream. What I'm
trying to say is we want to hear from you,
so send us an email or voice memo at the
Who Was Podcast at gmail dot com groups. Welcome back
to the Who Was? Podcast. On today's episode, we're finding
(16:15):
out who was Amelia air Arnt and Michael Jordan's. Before
we left, we asked our contestants, can you list three
times Michael Jordan had to pivot off the court? Bonus
points for Amelia air Hearts pivots to Now let's hear
their answers. Amelia, You're up first, all right, So my
first pivot is when he left basketball. My second one
(16:36):
takes a very long jump. It goes to when he
joined baseball, and my third one is when he split
up with his wife and married his second wife. Nice job.
And I have once for Amelia Earhart? Should I say
those now? Oh? Yes? Please do yes, please do so.
My first one is when she had to sell her plane,
My second one is when she bought a car, and
(16:59):
my third one is when she got her new plane. Awesome.
Does all sound good to me? This is very funny,
But I thought that when you said pivot you meant
it physically, like when would he actually have to pivot
like in a game so real, like in the Olympics.
He probably had to pivot in a game to like
spin around? Did she used to fall? But no, when
(17:20):
he had twins, when his first kids were girls, and
then when his first kids were boys, when he changed
from basketball to baseball, and also when he left baseball
and joined the Bobcats as a coach ish instead of
an actual player. So keeping it in mind now your
new knowledge about what we mean by pivots, do you
(17:41):
have any pivots for Amelia Earhart? When Amelia Earhart how
she stopped being a nurse and she became a pilot. Yes,
that's my one. Okay, So looking at my scores here, Amelia,
I'm going to give you a five points for that,
and Max you have a four points for that. So
from that round, Amelia five, Max four. Producer Jane, before
(18:02):
we head into our final game, have you had time
to tally those and add those to the regular scores
to get our super duper new scores? I sure did, Elliott,
And let me tell you something. It It was like
the basketball score of the game I'd play basketball in.
Amelia has eleven points and Max has nine. Thank you, Jane.
(18:23):
This is still such a close game. This is still,
as they say in sports, anybody's game, alright. So, Elliott,
I get the connection between Michael Jordan and Amelia Earhart
is like in flying and pivoting and who knows, maybe
even some fast breaks or half court presses or free throws.
You really, you really seem to be stretching the metaphor
there be Oh yes, most definitely, um, but do they
(18:46):
have anything else in common? I'm so glad that you asked,
because that's the topic of our next game, which is
called Tycoon A Tycoon. Amelia Earhart and Michael Jordan aren't
just memorable because of their big talents and bold accomplishments.
They were both able to solidify themselves in the public
(19:08):
mind by endorsing products and extending their celebrity to other areas.
So for this game, we're going to read taglines for
made up products. You'll tell us if they would have
been created by Amelia Earhart or Michael Jordan's. Here to
help us voice the commercials is Zach our intern with
the Golden Voice, Amelia. This first question is for you
(19:29):
roll that jingle, gardeners. Are you dissatisfied with the way
your plants are growing? Then you need a fertilizer that's
three times more powerful than the average pete boss try
three peete, yes, three peat for plants with three times
the luster, three times the foliage, and three times the growth.
Three pete find it wherever fertilizer is sold. Michael Jordan's
(19:54):
with his two time three pets that tried, Amelia, This
is a Michael Jordan's jam. Three refers to the three
times the Bulls won the NBA Championship in a row,
but overall they won six times. That's amazing. I hope
to beat that record someday, but I've got to start
pretty soon. Yeah. Keep training, Elliott, keep keep reaching for
(20:15):
those stars. Yeah. I'm still learning about basketball and how
it works. But I figured by the time I'm fifty
year sixty, I'll be ready to start trying to break
that record. Yeah, Elliott b Yes, it's producer Jane. I
feel the need to inform you of an error I
may have made in what I call complicated math. I
added six and four and came up with nine. The
correct answer is, of course ten. Amelia has eleven points,
(20:40):
Max has ten. Please forgive me, Jane. Thank you for
the correction, and I admire the guts it took to
admit to a mistake. That's a lesson we can all
learn from. We can all learn that's right. Amen. So
knowing that the game is even tighter than we thought, Max,
this next ad is for you, another evening, another Elliott
(21:02):
kalin fried chicken dinner. Now it's time to freshen my
breath with a mint refreshing d oh. No, someone's at
the door. I can't greet them with this mint in
my mouth, but I don't want to waste it. Whatever
shall I do? Hold on their friend. You need to
retire Mint. How did you get in my house? Also? Retirement? Yes,
(21:29):
retired mint flavor is so strong you can decide to
take it and then not and then take it again.
No matter when you decide to take it, the flavor
stays strong. So go answer that door, retire Mint. Oh
waits your whims Thanks retirement? All right, Max, what do
you think? I think that that is Michael Jordan's because
(21:51):
he retired to do baseball and then he came back
out of retirement. Yes, absolutely correct, we do. Go Okay, Amelia,
this next product is for you looking for a way
to live it up your breakfast routine? Then why not
try Violet Cheerio. It's probably delicious and most likely nutritious.
(22:12):
Who knows the best way to start a big adventure
is with Violet cheerio? That is Amelia Earhart because Violet
was their code for when they were taking off with
the plane. That's right, Amelia. That's the telegram that Amelia
sent George Putnam before her flight across the Atlantic, so
it belongs to Amelia. Great job, And the next one
(22:32):
is for Max. Is your schedule too stressful? I feel
like sometimes you just want to disappear. Well, then let
the soothing tropical breezes of how All Island Resort and
SPA take you away. Find yourself by completely getting lost
at how Island Resort and Spaw Island Resort and SPA
is not responsible for any disappearances. I think that that
(22:56):
is Amelia Earhart also, because she also disappeared. We'll trying
to get to Howell Island, where you will lose every
sense of yourself. That's true. That's exactly what happened to Amelia.
At least she Howell's Islands, the place who's trying to
get to when she disappeared, never to be seen again. Well,
that's the end of that round. Great job playing, everybody,
(23:16):
and that's the end of the game. Oh my goodness.
I feel just like Michael Jordan's We're in the penalty
box and we're about to free kick and the Swedish
judge keeps giving us the stink eye. Those are all
definitely basketball terms. Absolutely Before we hear the scores, though,
(23:38):
I want to ask our contestants, was there something that
they learned when they were reading about Amelia Earhart of
Michael Jordan that really stuck with them, Something that surprised them,
something that felt memorable, something they never would have guessed before,
or that they'll take with them for the rest of
their lives. Amelia will start with you, what's something that
really jumped out of you when you're reading these books?
Um that Amelia Earhart with Sam Chapman she rejected his
(23:59):
marriage proposal not just one time, but two times and
got married to someone else. And what and what do
you take from that? Why did that stick out to you?
Do you think because she was so determined that it
was only her career that she wasn't going to have kids,
be you stay at home mom. It was her career
that was coming first, and she wasn't going to let
some man take that away from her. Yeah, some Chapman
(24:24):
take that away from her, it said a put Nam.
She allowed to help her in her career as as
an equal partner. That's what about you. I definitely did
not know that Michael Jordan's was in a commercial with
bug Bunny. You really didn't know that. Well. I knew
he was in a movie, Bugs Bunny, but I didn't
know that he was in a commercial with Bugs Bunny
(24:46):
where Bugs Bunny were Harry Jordan's that's right before the
movie came the commercial and people saw them together and
they were like, this is a star couple, Michael Jordan's
and Bugs Bunny. We've got to capture this magic in
a bottle again. They were the Ginger Rogers and Fred
Astaire of their day. I'm sure all our listeners out
there will understand their reference. M Well, just like they
say about Ginger Rogers, Bugs Bunny had to do everything
(25:07):
Michael Jordan did, but backwards and as a bunny and
in heals. Oh, those are great things to remember about
both of them. Something inspiring about Miliahart and frankly, it's
pretty inspiring that Michael Jordan got to work with the
cartoon rabbit twice. Thank you both so much for sharing
those with us. Jane, can you give us the final scores?
I'm happy to do that, Elliott, And let me just
(25:29):
tell you they both played amazing games, but there can
be only one winner, unless, of course, there's a tie,
and they have both won with twelve points, which is
a fact. Is that what happens. It's completely possible that
I'm wrong again. So Amelia was ahead before we went
(25:53):
into the last round. Yeah, Amelia was one ahead, it
was ten, and then we both got two points so
that it would be twelve. That's right. You've got to
welcome us to the Who Counts podcast, where we ask
what are numbers? How do they work? So could somebody
ask me to score a good? Great? You got it.
(26:16):
We'll go back. Everyone pretend none of that ever happened.
None of it happened. Don't worry. Jane will never speak
of this moment. And now let's go to Jane for
the final score. Jane, Yes, Eliot, both players played an
amazing game. But the final score is Max with twelve
(26:39):
points and Amelia with good games. And you're totally sure
about that. You're confident that that's the end of the game.
I feel very confidently. I wonder if my lucky numbers
we did it well. Amelia, Congratulations, you played a great game. Max,
you played a great game too. This is a real
close one. Amelia. As our winner, you have ten seconds
(27:00):
now to shout out to whoever you want to, So
who would you like to thank for this amazing victory? Mom, Dad, Liam, Quinn, Emmet,
sim G Bridget and Izzy. That's a lot of shoutouts
to fit into that time. And you did it. That
was great. Well, I'm going to give a shout out
to our intern Zach, to Jane, to Eric, and of
course to be a big thank you to both of
our contestants for playing a fantastic game and having a
(27:21):
lot of fun with us Today. Amelia, you and your
school library, we're receiving a set of who Was books,
