Speaker 1 (00:00):
Demarta Rosen is a Sacramento King. We will go inside
the DeRozan sign and trade negotiations and Paul George and
his divorce from the LA Clippers. Paul George talked about
it at length on his podcast. We will now do
the same on our podcast. Lots of national team talk,

(00:22):
Cooper flag Fever, Summer League preview, all of that to
come here on a brand new edition of This League Uncut.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Welcome to This League Uncut in you rule the twenty
four hour NBA news this he'll Chris hands, it's time,
work's time, It's so time.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
This League Uncut is underway and on fire. This should
be a good one.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Hey, everyone, welcome in to another edition This League Uncut.
Mark and Chris Haynes recording on a Monday night. We
were just about to start taping when I got distracted
because Zach Edie, in his first NBA highlight, even though
it's Summer League, even though won't go in the record books,

(01:18):
actually forces overtime in a Summer League game with his
team down to by tipping in an intentionally miss free
throw after Utah filed up three crazy sequence, one of
the best executed intentionally miss free throws you will ever see.

(01:38):
Trust me, I can't really do it justice with just
words and no video. But if you haven't seen it,
you know what. By the time you hear this pod,
I'm guessing. I'm guessing the listeners of this show are
such a diehards you will have seen it. It was
a quite a wild sequence at the Summer League in
Salt Lake City. In Summer League is really ramping up now.

(02:00):
There's games in California, games in Utah. Of course, the
Vegas Summer League gets cranked up later this week. We've
also got a USA Canada exhibition Wednesday night in Vegas
before the national team.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Leaves the country.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Cooper Flag Fever is officially underway in the NBA because
of how good he has looked at Olympic camp plan
for the select team. At the age of seventeen, Chris Haynes,
Cooper Flagg is younger than my youngest son. He doesn't
even turn eighteen until December. He doesn't even Cooper Flag

(02:38):
has not even played a college game yet.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Everybody's raving about this guy.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
We had the Olympic qualifiers over the weekend, but of
course Chris and I are still focused on free agency.
Chris Proud, resident of Sacramento where they are buzzing about
the sign and trade acquisition of DeMar DeRozan. We're gonna
talk Paul George Derozen, We're going to get into all
the these topics. Chris Haynes, is Sacramento ready for DeMar

(03:07):
derosen give us the vibe from on the street. How
big a deal is this acquisition?

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Pretty big deal.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
You know, Sacramento is not a customer picking up top
free agents. Damar still is a very good player. Average
twenty four for the Chicago Bulls last season was top
two and clutch points. Still a very productive player, still
an all Star level player. So this that's a that's
a pretty big deal, pretty big deal. And the Kings

(03:35):
fans around here, I'm trying to explain the mood. They're exciting,
they're excited, they're pumped, but it's still like disbelief. I
think that's the best way to explain it, because again,
they are not accustomed of picking up top free agents. Yeah,
this is I think it's just a surreal moment for them.

(03:58):
But overall excitement level was pretty much through the roof.
There's some question marks. Is defensively can they get it done.
Did they give up versatility? You know, losing Harrison Barnes
who we know. DeMar Derozen is definitely the upgrade offensively
on Harrison. Defensively can't will they be able to patch

(04:21):
some of the holes up? Those are some of the
question marks. But it's definitely a deal or a move
I should say that Kings fans overwhelmingly approve of.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
It's interesting because Mike Brown is known as a defense
first coach. He always has been known as a defense
first coach. But really, when you look at last season,
he got them to play pretty much league average defense,
which is no mean feat with that roster. Where the

(04:51):
King slipped last season compared to the previous season was
actually at the offensive end, where they had been a
top three offense before when they finally ended the playoff drought.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
But I think you're right there are going to be
questions about fit.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
I think though Damar has shown that you know, post
raptor Damar DeRozan, he's fitting in San Antonio very well.
He was a top level offensive player in Chicago. So
can he find the room to operate in an offense
that features the bonus and Fox? I mean He's such

(05:29):
an accomplished veteran, has so many experiences, you would like
to think that he'll find a way to make that transition.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Will the Kings get back to.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Something closer to where they were offensively in Mike Brown's
first season?

Speaker 3 (05:44):
But yeah, I mean the questions are going to be
asked in the West? Is it enough?

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Do the Kings have to really make another move to
truly contend in the West Because Oklahoma City clearly looks
like they got better. Dallas won the West, and I
think they've improved in the offseason. Minnesota didn't change too much,
But I think that the Wolves will still be right

(06:10):
there at the top of the West. I know everybody's
down on Denver because they let casep go without compensation,
But the Nuggets still have the duo of Jokichen Murray,
so I don't think we should just exclude them from
this conversation. There are question marks about the Suns and
the Lakers, and the Clippers and the Warriors.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Memphis.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
How likely is it that the Grizzlies can bounce back
up the Western Conference charts? What does Houston have in store?
I mean, it's still such a deep conference that Sacramento
will have a lot of work to do to really contend.
But demart rows and it played out a lot like

(06:54):
it did his previous free agency. Looked like there was nothing,
looked like the market closed up on him, and a
sign and trade emerged to send him to a destination
that at the start of free agency nobody was really
talking about.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
Yeah, I mean, you have to credit his agent, Aaron Goodwin.
This is the second consecutive time where Tomorrow was a
free agent where it looked like there wasn't any cap
space out there available and Tomorrow will have to take
a pay cut based off of the just based off
of the balance that the team's had and similar, very

(07:31):
similar structure. Out of nowhere, a signing trade san Antonio
Chicago got him. Chicago got a nice number and very
much still the same. Two years is guaranteed, third year
is a partial guaranteed. But he's getting basically sixty million
over two years, so he's getting thirty million the season.
And this was just just imagine, you know, he's getting

(07:54):
thirty million the season now when you know other teams,
all they had available were was the mid level exception.
And I was told I said it here multiple times
Damar was not taking that, even though that was the
only thing out there. He was not taking thirteen million

(08:16):
taxpayer mid level exception type contract wasn't happening. So what
I do know is his agent, Aaron Gooden, informed teams,
if you really want Damar showed me you want them.
If not, we're going to be patient and see what happens.
They were patient. Miami tried to get into the mix
to Los Angeles Clippers, last minute try to get into

(08:37):
the mix, but ultimately the Kings were just just more
aggressive in their approach. And you know, Damar got to
a point where Jamar Power was told like he really
had to seriously consider Sacramento. So he wanted to come here,
come here to sack and you know reported you know,
he took a recruiting trip here this Saturday and actually

(09:00):
ended up agreeing that night. But he got here and
he actually went to a car dealership and people were
talking about what jamorro went and I saw social media
people was talking about, well, Damar wenton got a car.
That that means he was gonna sign. No, Damar got
the car. He went to a dealership, got a car.
He wanted to drive around Sacramento for a little bit,

(09:20):
so he wanted to just get the lamp, the layer
of the land out. He's wasn't that familiar with the city,
so he took it in on that recruiting trip. I
was told Darren Fox joined them on that trip. He
watched Aaron Fox work out, He had conversation with the
front office, had a meeting with Coach Brown, and he

(09:42):
was sold. The money got up, you know. I was
told there was you know there where they ended at
and where they started at drastic difference. So Sacramento showed
that they didn't just want to bring him here on
a trip. They wanted to seal the deal and they
got their mayor.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
I'm glad you brought up to Aaron Fox because I
think we've discussed this before. I think you kind of
did some explaining on his contract situation on a recent pod.
They all kind of run together, but I'm pretty sure
you covered this recently. So Fox, the rumbles were that
he was going to hold off on an extension, and

(10:24):
part of it is obviously he didn't make All NBA
this season, and if he makes All NBA next season,
he can extend.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
At a higher number.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
But I think there have also been rumbles that maybe
he wanted to see what the Kings were going to
do roster wise this summer. Have you heard those same rumbles?
Do you think there is anything to that? And do
you think will he be impressed? Is this a move
that moves the needle for him? I guess is what
I'm trying to say.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
Well, let me say this.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
I can't answer that question because I can't get inside
thereon Fox's mind, and I have I haven't spoken to
him recently. But what I will say is the Kings
once they got confirmation that Tomorrow was going to fly
into town Saturday, the Kings reached out to dear and
to ask if he would be a part of the
recruiting pitch. And there are some star players who if

(11:15):
they're not liking the direction of the team, or if
they're mentally just not connected with the team, they won't
do it. Part of it is because they just don't
want to be associated with the team right now. The
other aspect of it, which a lot of players do do,
is that they don't want to be connected to the
recruiting pitch because if the player doesn't pick that team,

(11:39):
it makes it look it makes it, It makes it.
It makes them look bad like they are not a
good They're not a good recruiter, you know. I know
Lebron dealt with that a lot in his career, to
the point where he didn't want to be involved later
on and some other recruitments of players because you know,

(12:01):
the label and the narrative that can run them up.
But Daron Fox willingly oblige and he did it. So
I think that speaks volumes as far as like how
connected he still is with the Kings. But definitely it
makes it makes more sense for him to give himself
another shot of making All NBA to qualify for that

(12:22):
Super Max deal, because yeah, he missed out on that
this past season.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Yeah, I mean that All NBA team. Even with the
sixty five game rule which rules out a handful of
players who don't play sixty five games to qualify, it
is still there are so many more names than fifteen
that make a compelling case to get on that list.
So it's it's even tougher than making it to the

(12:50):
All Star Game just getting on the NBA's top.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Fifteen for the season. Let's shift to.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Another significant story that emerged on this month. You and
I are recording this on Monday night, so it'll be
out Tuesday morning. But Paul George on his podcast, the
very popular Paul George Podcast, he went really in depth
on negotiations with the Clippers, how they went awry. This

(13:20):
has become one of the real bonuses of this era
with so many players doing their own pods, they reveal
so much they just tell the story themselves. Of course,
that means you're only getting the Paul George version. We
obviously have not heard the Clippers response to this. Knowing

(13:40):
how tight lip the Clippers are about everything, I don't
know how much of a response will eventually get from
the Clippers. But I mean, Paul George laid it out
in pretty grand detail, and to this point I haven't
heard any real disputing of the way he's laid it out.
He basically says that initial extension offers from the Clippers

(14:01):
were only in the two year sixty million range, and
then after Kawhi Leonard got his three year, one hundred
and fifty million plus deal in January, Paul George and
the Clippers went back and forth, and according to PG.
Thirteen's telling, he told the Clippers he was willing to

(14:25):
stay for the same deal that Kawhi Leonard got. He
was not trying to get more than Kawhi Leonard. But
ultimately Paul George did acknowledge that he said if he
was going to get a three year offer, he wanted
a no trade clause from the Clippers. The Clippers did
not want to grant him a no trade clause. And again,
just to remind everyone, no trade clauses in the NBA,

(14:48):
a full no trade clause very difficult to get. Basically,
first of all, you have to be an unrestricted free agent.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
You cannot add a no trade clause to extension.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
So Paul George would have had to opt out of
his current deal and become a free agent and then
sign a new deal that has a no trade clause
in it. But the Clippers did not want to grant
the no trade clause. We've seen Bradley Beal's no trade
clause from the contract he got from Washington and how

(15:20):
much that has complicated potential moves for Beale and ultimately
influence Miami to stop pursuing Bradley Beal. So all right,
I've blabbed long enough. You are someone who knows Paul
George pretty well. What did you think when you heard
Paul George reveals so much about his talks with the clips.

Speaker 5 (15:43):
Well, I'm glad he did, because you know, if you're
going to have a podcast, is you know, state your truth.
You know, I think a lot of times we have
these podcasts and we don't get too much of anything.
So I'm glad he did go into detail, so I
would say, I would say this, And so one thing

(16:04):
that caught my attention was when he said that you know,
they he felt low, Baldy felt disrespected. Believe it was
two years sixty initially, but during late later on during
the season, he came to the realization, okay, listen, just
give me what Kawhi has, which seems fair, and they

(16:28):
wouldn't give him that. So that that kind of caught
my attention right there. And then it was just no
coming back from that, no trade clause, as you mentioned,
but stein I still, you know, maybe I'm beating a
dead horse or maybe there's nothing to it. But again

(16:49):
for them not to even give him the same contract
that Kawhi accepted, which was below their max, which was
not four years, just showed me that there was a
clear pecking order and this is what I'm talking about,
beating a dead horse.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
Now.

Speaker 5 (17:08):
Remember I remember when Paul George did this interview, and
I wonder why he said it. I you know, I understood,
but he did an interview and he stated that Kawhi
is the number one, I'm the number two. He verbally
said that, and you really, like, I don't care, like

(17:29):
it's rare, even if you have two alpha males, it's
rare for them to appoint themselves one or two publicly.
We can tell look at their game. We can tell
who has the ball at the end of the game.
We could tell whose numbers are better, and we can
tell that to see who is the who is the
number one, who's number two. Rarely you hear a player
of those calibers admit or a point point at themselves.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
So I do like, again, it's just my theory, but
I believe the Clippers believe that. They believed he believed that,
and they possibly try to use that against him in
trade and excuse me, in negotiations. And I think the
Clippers were caught by surprise too when they found out

(18:17):
Paul was trying to get eventually trying to get what
Kawhi got and then even trying to get more with
the fourth year. You know, you could say whatever you
want to say, Paul George and Kawhi liar they are.
You know, Kawhi better, Kui is a more accompassed player.
I just don't know what you know with the injury history.

(18:37):
I don't know where Kawhi stands as far as future dominance.
But you can make the case, you can pick idle
one as far as who you think is better right now.
So you know, I'm just surprised that the Clippers really
tried to hold fast to Paul taking less than what Kawhi.
What Kawhi took that was that was a little shocking.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
I think it's clear now. I mean, the Clippers have
said publicly, you know that in this new double Apron era,
the Aprons, and look, there are so many team building
restrictions that operating and living in the second Apron it
does severely limit your flexibility to build a roster. So

(19:27):
you know, the Clippers have been very public about that already.
But I think what we really can see now is
because when you listen to Paul George speak on his pod,
I mean he said that he knows, you know, he
was not trying to get more than Kawhi from the Clippers.
He ultimately left for more for a four year deal

(19:48):
that went beyond two hundred million to leave for Philly,
But according to Paul George's version, he would have stayed,
you know, or around the same number that Kawhi Leonard got.
And it's just clear the Clippers wanted to move on.
The Clippers after five years of a franchise that revolved

(20:12):
around Kawhi and Paul George. Yes, they made the Conference
finals for the first time in franchise history, but they
haven't won a series since twenty twenty one. They only
won three playoff rounds with that as their star duo. Oh,
they wanted to move on. They wanted to do something different,
And when you look at the way the Clippers have
responded to Paul George's departure, there are tons of similarity.

(20:35):
The Warriors are doing the same thing post Klay Thompson.
The Clippers have made a number of very nice signings
to players on what you would call bargain contracts, and
they're trying to fill the Paul George void.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
With four or five new players.

Speaker 1 (20:54):
Derek Jones Junior, but toom Chris Dunn, they got Mobam
in there. I think I'm leaving somebody out. You'll maybe
remind me who am I leaving out?

Speaker 3 (21:04):
And Porter Kevin Porter Jr.

Speaker 1 (21:08):
So they're signing all these players to try to replace
Paul George with depth, and Golden State has done the
exact same thing. Klay Thompson is out, but de Anthony Melton,
Kyle Anderson, Buddy healed Golden State is trying to replace

(21:28):
one player with three. The difference, though, is Golden State
still has draft picks to make an impact trade when
it presents itself. Before Clay Thompson formally left the Warriors
via sign and trade, the Clippers spent the whole final

(21:50):
week before free agency, days before the draft, and after
the draft, they were trying to trade for Paul George.
They were exploring the feasibility of trading for lowry marketing.
They aggressively pursued those changes, and the Warriors still have
draft picks in their cachet to make a significant trade

(22:12):
down the road, whereas the Clippers all their picks went
out the door in the trade to put Kawhi Leonard
and Paul George together. So from the Warriors it's you
can more easily imagine a significant trade.

Speaker 3 (22:29):
Down the road.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
That brings a star to the Bay and in the
short term, the Warriors are going to see if this
depth approach can get them through and actually maybe take them.
There are some people around the league who think that
the Warriors have actually improved their overall roster despite the

(22:53):
fact that they've lost Klay Thompson, because they've added three
very solid pros, proven players who can help them in
a number of ways. The Clippers again are trying the
same approach, but as you mentioned, based on your reporting,
the Clippers wanted to jump into the DeRozan talks at

(23:13):
the last minute, although Sacramento was already well down the
road and ultimately got that deal done with DeMar de Rosen.
But it would have been fascinating to see exactly how
the Clippers could have done a sign in trade for DeRozan,
because I do think again, without the draft picks it is,
it's just more difficult for them to make moves.

Speaker 5 (23:35):
Yeah, and again, like I said, it was with PG,
I'm glad he spoke on it in detailed and obviously
it's coming from his perspective, you know. And Stein you
said you don't think we'll hear from sacrament I don't know.
In this new day and age, you got teams putting
out press releases right after they lose a player d

(23:58):
and the Clippers detailing detail a little.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
Bit about what led to Paul George leaving. We offered this.
He wasn't receptive to it like this. It's a new
day and age. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (24:08):
Maybe we'll we'll hear a comeback of some sort, especially
if not by the team themselves. You know, you know
how teams lead to reporters. Maybe we'll hear about it
that way. But I think it'll all be served for
everyone if they just moved on. You know, it's in
the past, so let's keep it moving.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
Yeah, and clearly, I think you know we've had how
many times have we talked about the Clippers moving into
this new arena and they need a good team to
go into that new arena. Are Our former colleague Zaclo
had a good line. He's calling it the toilet palace.
The into it Dome will be the toilet palace because
of all of Steve Balmer's many boasts about how there

(24:52):
will be bathroom facilities everywhere you turn in the Into
It Dome, which I have not yet had the chance
to tour. I am looking forward to can outwait to
check out the Into a Dome. Like I mentioned, I
think last week on one of the pods, there's there's
a there's displays in the Into It Dome with high
school jerseys from every school in southern California. So I

(25:12):
definitely can't wait to check that out. But they've got
Kawhi Leonard, they re signed James Harden on a two year,
seventy million dollar deal. They've made all these smaller signings
to make sure they have quality depth. But I guess
really what they're counting on is that the arena is

(25:33):
going to be the superstar.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
That the arena is so good that it draws.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
The fans in as much as a Kawhi Leonard James
Harden duo that is no longer that is no longer
a star trio because Paul George is Philly bound.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
Yeah, I don't know. It's going to have to be
a team. You know, the Dallas Mavericks. You know, they got.

Speaker 4 (26:03):
Two star players, and then they have a ton of
guys who are really good at doing what they do.
They're the good role players, they do the dirty work.
You know, it seemed like the Clippers are trying to
take on that mode right now. You know, they have Russ,
they had James Harden, they had Paul George Kawhi Leonard.

(26:25):
Maybe they feel felt like that was a little bit
too much, especially with the egos that are involved. So
I don't know. We'll see if they can capitalize on
trying to try in the Dallas Mavericks approach of getting
a few stars and filling it with quality reserved players.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
And speaking of those Mavericks again, we're taping this on
Monday night. It'll be out Tuesday, this podcast Tuesday morning.
In Dallas, Klay Thompson in your productory press conference.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
You're going, I am going, I have to okay, Like
I I am still.

Speaker 1 (27:09):
Struggling to process the idea of Clay Thompson not wearing
number eleven with the Golden State Warriors, switching to number
thirty one his homage to Reggie Miller. But thirty one,
that's a that's a significant number to take on in
Dallas because that was Jason Terry's number, and Jason Terry,

(27:32):
of course was a key cog on the only championship
team in Maverick's history. But the MAVs are introducing all
of their new players later Tuesday, and yeah, to see
Clay Thompson at the dais truly his debut as a
Dallas Maverick. That will be something.

Speaker 4 (27:54):
I will be You'll be there. I'll be here in
Sacramento at DeMar Derozans open press.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
Yeah, there's I mean, there's been a lot coming out
of the July fourth holiday. On Monday, there were a
slew of press conferences and as you said, we got
a couple significant already on Tuesday schedules. So stuff, staff,
stuff is still happening, man, stuff is still happening. Like

(28:21):
I said, we got to keep our eye. You know,
I think things have cooled somewhat. There is no longer
a trade frenzy of teams trying to pursue Lowry Marketing,
but you know that could spark up again any time.
And Lowry Marketing is eligible for an extension from the
Jazz a renegotiation and extension with cap Space. Lowry Marketing

(28:45):
is eligible for that on August sixth, So that's coming
up that we need to keep our eye on. Will
teams keep trying to acquire marketing via trade. Our trade
talks essentially shelled until after the jazz and market and
workout and extension. We don't have those answers yet. We
seek those answers. We seek that clarity. Also something that

(29:09):
needs to be monitored closely the future of brandon Ingram.
The Pelicans remain open to trade dialogue. There doesn't seem
to be much of a brandon Ingram trade market. It
just hasn't developed at this point. Will something develop this
offseason before training camp starts again in late September. September

(29:33):
thirtieth is the media day for most teams, the teams
that are not heading overseas, so we got to keep
our eye on brandon Ingram's future. The Bulls, of course
still very much want to trade zach lavine, but talk
about no market. The Bulls have been trying since last
November to find a trade market for zach lavine with

(29:54):
no success. And Kyle Kuzma. I think we need to
also keep Kuzma on our radar because in this new
double Apron roster building restrictions world that has been imposed
on all these teams, Kyle Kuzma's got three years left
on his deal in Washington sixty four million over three,

(30:17):
but that thing descends, it goes down to nineteen point
four million in year four. Kyle Kuzma is an incredibly
versatile forward. The Wizards did seriously discuss a deal with
Dallas for Kuzma at the trade deadline in February. They
actually Kuzma doesn't have a no trade clause, but they

(30:38):
actually gave Kuzma a say, and Kuzma said he preferred
to stay in Washington. How much longer will he stay
in Washington? I mean to me, with that contract, he
is a player teams will be looking at because his
contract is so favorable and he can do a lot

(30:58):
of stuff. So I think we still have lots of
trades to keep an eye on. At least, I think,
you know, the the the bulk of free agency, the
bulk of the free agent action is complete. And that's
the way it always is now. It always goes super
fast once the buzzer sounds at six pm Eastern on

(31:20):
June thirtieth, But still plenty going on, and like we
haven't even gotten into all the Olympics stuff, which you know,
I love my Feba hoops.

Speaker 4 (31:28):
Will you be out there?

Speaker 3 (31:31):
I am not going to the Olympics.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
That was not possible for my humble little enterprise, although
I do have to say I was led to believe
that I could have somehow qualified for an Olympic credential,
which would have been amazing.

Speaker 3 (31:45):
But I am just going to enjoy that one from Afar.

Speaker 1 (31:50):
And like I said, I think Wednesday night already just
when Team USA plays Canada and absolutely stacked Canada in
an exhibition game. You know, the Olympics it's so different
to the World Cup because the World Cup has thirty
two teams in at the Olympics only have twelve. We
just saw this weekend the qualifiers. I'm sure you saw
the footage of Janis on Tetokumpo leading Greece to the

(32:13):
Olympics for the first time in his tenure as a
big time player. It's going to be Grease's first trip
to the Olympics since two thousand and eight. Spinulus, the
Greek legend, is now their coach and he's made a
huge impact on the program with his coaching after just
years and years of stalwart play in the backcourt. And

(32:36):
you know, Janis was clearly emotional on the bench when
it sank in that Greece is going Greece Brazil. I mean,
you saw probably Puerto Rico and how pumped Jose Alvarado
and Carlos Arroyo the way they celebrated Puerto Rico winning
a last chance qualifier on home soil, but with some

(32:58):
really good team in the Puerto Rico section. Lithuania and
Italy were in the sixteen group in Puerto Rico, and
Puerto Rico gets the win, they advance at home. That
was huge for them. And then Spain beating Bahamas. The
Bahamas falls one win, shy of an absolute Cinderella ride

(33:20):
to the Olympics, So that was crushing for Bahamas, which
of course has DeAndre Ayton and Eric Gordon and Buddy
healed and they came so close.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
You know.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
Last summer the Bahamas coached by Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco,
they won a qualifier in Argentina, and of course Argentina
no longer has its Golden Generation stars like Monogenobili and
Louis Skola playing. But you beat Argentina at home, you
did something that is a very tough place to go

(33:51):
and win.

Speaker 3 (33:52):
And this time Bahamas.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
Had to beat Spain in Spain to actually make the Olympics,
and that last step tantalizingly close. They just fell short.
But yeah, I mean only twelve teams make it to
the Olympics, and men's and women's basketball, so the field
is much smaller. And I mean you see this US roster,

(34:16):
it's absolutely stacked. I mean they are the clear favorites,
but they gotta go to France, and the home nation
has Wemby and go Bear and a very strong team
of its own. So I could go on and on
and on. You know, I love my Olympic hoops. Even
if I have to watch it from home, I will

(34:38):
be dialed in. Well, we got to get you to
an Olympics, right, You still have never been.

Speaker 3 (34:42):
To the Olympics? Is that true?

Speaker 5 (34:44):
Never have, never have? And yes, I beat you, producer Rye. Yeah,
never have never been to an Olympics. I wasn't the
rest of the cover in this one. Things just didn't
work out timing other matters. But yeah, it would have
been cool to over this Lebron's final Olympic, Lebron's staff,
maybe even Kd's final Olympic.

Speaker 4 (35:06):
That would have been cool.

Speaker 5 (35:07):
But and being in Paris as well, Nicholas Patune always said,
once I get there, he'll show me around.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Oh wow, that would make that would I've only been
to France once a bazillion years ago. I did not
have Let's just say, I did not have an experience
on par with what that would be like to have
your bat showing you around.

Speaker 3 (35:28):
Not bad.

Speaker 5 (35:29):
Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna get there eventually, but no,
I'm missing this one. But uh, I look at their
I look at the team to Team USA lineup in
their roster. I'm looking at everybody else looking at the field.
They definitely can be beat. And I know I haven't
seen them play a game yet. I haven't seen how
well they they messed together. But you know it's not.

Speaker 4 (35:53):
On paper. It's just not the.

Speaker 3 (35:57):
You don't like their team.

Speaker 4 (35:58):
On paper, it's cool.

Speaker 5 (36:00):
I think there are some other players that will probably
make it a little bit more robust, but on paper
they're cool.

Speaker 4 (36:07):
They got the names, they have the names.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
I mean, this is a damn strong team.

Speaker 4 (36:13):
I mean, just for it's solid.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
Steph has not played for the national team since the
twenty fourteen World Cup in Spain, and that was really
my that was such a huge event. I always say
like I've been lucky, I got. I was able to
cover three Olympics. I did Sydney in two thousand, I
did London in twenty twelve, and I did Rio in
twenty sixteen. But the two best assignments of my sports

(36:36):
writing career were the twenty twelve Olympics in London and
the twenty fourteen World Championships in Spain. That twenty fourteen summer,
I had more than thirty days in Spain covering that team.
Just an app I mean ridiculous, you know how you
know the kind of europe addict I am. So to

(36:57):
be with Team USA in your up in Spain for
more than thirty days, And that was so huge for
re because I didn't know Steph or Clay. That's really
where I got to know them. They played on that team,
and then the next season that was the first Warriors
title team, So I got thrown onto covering that team

(37:20):
because I had experience covering.

Speaker 3 (37:24):
Them from the summer before.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
But like it just it was crazy to hear Steph
talk about the talk about that this week, that you
know he hasn't played internationally since twenty fourteen. I think
it's twenty twelve for both Lebron and ad and on
the twenty twelve team, Ad was just drafted, so he
was just there really to get experience, and that was

(37:48):
his first transition really to professional basketball. So you know,
they've brought some of these guys back. Durant obviously still
going in just an absolute monster force on the international stage.
But look, the French are very good and we'll have
home court advantage. And France has beaten the US on

(38:12):
multiple occasions in the last five years without Victor women Yama.

Speaker 3 (38:17):
So let's see.

Speaker 1 (38:18):
I saw it with my own eyes at the twenty
nineteen World Cup in China. They beat them once at
the Tokyo Olympics, lost the gold medal game. The United
States got its revenge and beat France in the gold
medal game. The US has a much stronger team this time,
but the French are now adding Wemby so and Canada.
You will see it Wednesday night. With this Canada has

(38:40):
a really good roster, the best roster it's ever fielded.
So I'm just glad that we really have basketball now
thanks to the Olympics. We got Summer League in Vegas
coming up and then the Olympics, so really, we have basketball,

(39:00):
real basketball to follow, enjoy, savor until at least mid August.
In mid August, then summer really starts. Then the long,
the long, hot days of summer really start. But this
July is pretty jam packed with stuff for us to following. Again,

(39:21):
Man Cooper Flag, I'm sure you saw the I mean,
people just went nuts about him in camp today and
like I said, I I can't get over it.

Speaker 3 (39:31):
At seventeen, what he's doing.

Speaker 5 (39:34):
Now, this kid is supposed to be the next one,
the next great, the next feen. Now, so you know,
I want to see. I've been His highlight highlight tapes
are crazy. They they're the epitome of highlights. I will
say that that kid is the real deal. So looking
forward to seeing how he progresses as he gets closer

(39:57):
to the NBA.

Speaker 4 (39:59):
Stein a little bit of news I talked about them.
This is a.

Speaker 1 (40:07):
I was getting ready to wrap this thing up, producer
Ryan and.

Speaker 4 (40:11):
Yeah, I gotta throw a curve ball.

Speaker 3 (40:14):
Yeah you did.

Speaker 5 (40:16):
Back to the NBA Alert Twitter account that I talked about. Well,
have some new news, uh, Chris Paul has officially unfollowed
the Golden State Warriors. He has officially moved on Uh,
but I can see how fans will get in a

(40:37):
frenzy and when they see some of these unfollows and
followings and they start to speculate, they start to wonder.
So one of the latest ones involves Desmond Bane. He

(40:58):
is now following Damian Lillard.

Speaker 3 (41:04):
And what does that mean?

Speaker 4 (41:09):
Well, if you go under the if you go into comments. Uh,
somebody said, you know more about Damian than Damian Lillard.

Speaker 5 (41:19):
I don't know anything about Dame or Desmond Bang's connection.
But it's just funny how people start to speculate over
things like that. Uh it's cool man, that that that
Twitter account.

Speaker 4 (41:31):
I like it.

Speaker 5 (41:37):
H I text Dame, I said, what's going on with
Dan's band? He text me back, what you mean? So
so again, speculation A lot of times, just speculation. You
let your mind wonder and drift, and I guess I
get caught up in it too. So thank you NBA alert.

(41:58):
You got me to text about something that is nothing.

Speaker 1 (42:04):
Any other news you want to share before we put
this thing to bed, because I got admit. I admit
when you said you got a curve, I was I
was excited. I don't know that that rose. I don't
know that that justified the excitement.

Speaker 4 (42:20):
Let me see me see if any any other try.

Speaker 1 (42:24):
You know, when Chris goes stein hold on, that usually
leads to something.

Speaker 6 (42:29):
The only thing I can think about right now is
how does this tie in to uber and left? How
this doesn't in pain?

Speaker 3 (42:39):
An NBA alert called us to do some reads.

Speaker 5 (42:44):
I'm glad you mentioned that, Ryan, because I had a
few people text me and said, Chris, I understood where
you were going with that analogy. I'm like, thank you
because my co host and my producer act like they
didn't have a clue.

Speaker 4 (42:57):
So thank you.

Speaker 6 (42:58):
Well, since we're on it, I have something that I
want to bring you, uh Stein, I mentioned this to
you and Chris. This is something we need to discuss.
A very short lived Stein with a beard. I mean
the beard is already gone. I mean we couldn't.

Speaker 3 (43:16):
You guys were seeing things. It was not a beard
then and it's not a beard now.

Speaker 4 (43:21):
It was not like it's unfortunate. I saw that. I
was very disappointed, very disappointed.

Speaker 5 (43:27):
Yeah, all that work just to let it go. Yeah,
but you know what, some people are just not fit.
You know, it takes a it takes a certain mentality,
a certain swag, to be able to walk around with
that beard.

Speaker 4 (43:41):
Maybe he just doesn't.

Speaker 1 (43:42):
Now, you guys are just taking commitment.

Speaker 3 (43:45):
This is unbelieving.

Speaker 5 (43:47):
I gave him props the other day, Ryan, I said,
like Stein, Stein can dress like Stein, he could put
together and he can put together a wardrobe like he is.
I give him props for that. And then the beer
is coming. I'm like, oh, shoot, was starn coming? Stop
stop telling your profile would have been raised dramatically. You're

(44:08):
telling you right now if you would have kept that
my profile.

Speaker 4 (44:11):
All you had to do.

Speaker 3 (44:11):
My profile all you help and my profile point.

Speaker 4 (44:17):
All you had to do, because you had enough hair out.
All you had to do was line it up.

Speaker 3 (44:23):
You lined that up, so you said it was up,
and I told you it was.

Speaker 4 (44:27):
It looked it looked like it was, but it was
still cool.

Speaker 1 (44:31):
All you be line it up this program, this program
with which we record this show. It was employing trick photography.

Speaker 5 (44:38):
I promise you, all right, well start I'm telling you
right now, you blew a golden You don't.

Speaker 3 (44:44):
See all this what I mean, this is still here.

Speaker 6 (44:47):
Now, that's that's like back down the little stubble, that's
I I bet if you had to go on TV.

Speaker 3 (44:55):
You wouldn't keep that, you would show that. Really, m
first of I'm not on TV anyway.

Speaker 4 (45:01):
But okay, yeah, I would think you would save it too. Okay, well,
give us some thought. You got the whole summer, give
us some thought. Check it out.

Speaker 5 (45:11):
I'm going to do something. I must grow my hair out.
I want to see how long got to grow my
hair out. Since I'll you know, be off of TV
for a while, so I'll be trying something. Only you
guys will be able to see it. This is not
for video, We'll not be publishing, and we're not putting
this out. This is just for me to see how
long can my hair grow? What parts do I need

(45:32):
to grow in? I know what parts I need to
grow in, but I need I need to I need
to do a little bit of experimenting on my head
this summer, So that is priority number one.

Speaker 3 (45:42):
Man. We should have ended this podcast ten minutes ago.

Speaker 5 (45:45):

think you're right. This is the only time I believe
