Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey guys, it's Kaylie shot and this is too much
to say asking questions it out you. Hey guys, So
I am back from the UK. I was on the
(00:22):
first ever Songs Ever Deaths tour. We've played some shows
around the country, but we've never done a full on tour,
and we've absolutely never done a tour overseas. And it
was actually my first time in the UK in Scotland
and I had a amazing time. I really love tea
and you can order tea at bars there and it's
not weird, which is like amazing. Um. There's so many
(00:45):
things I loved about the UK, and that's mostly what
I'm gonna talk about today. But first of all, we're
gonna start with my obsession of the week, and this
is something I discovered on the eight hour plane ride
I was on. It's called Good Girls. It's such a
funny show. Um stars Christina Hendrix. It's about three moms
who get involved with crime. It's similar to Weeds, but
(01:07):
not as dark at least yet. I loved the show Weeds,
but there were moments where I was like, this is
a this is like you can't she was like true antihero,
you know. Um, so I'm obsessed with that. I'm also
obsessed with the Taylor Swift album obviously, I feel like
I probably need to do an entire episode on that.
But this week we're going to talk about the UK.
(01:28):
So we started off in London. The tour was an
amazing group of girls. It was me, Carter Faith twenty
and Robin Odalini and I have been such a huge
fan of all three of them for so long, so
it was just like such a dream to be able
to play these shows with them, beyond tour together and
make all these memories, take all these pictures, try all
these bars and it was incredible. So the first day
(01:50):
we got there, I mean, jet leg is a bit
and people told me that it would be, but it
was like it was a bitch of bit and we
flew out at like nine pm and then we landed. Thankfully,
it was a direct flight at ten thirty am. So
I was like, oh, if I just like take samelotonin
knock myself out on the flight, I'll wake up at
ten thirty it'll all be normal. It was not normal. Um,
(02:12):
So that night I ended up waking up from like
two am to five thirty am and working on this
song that I've been trying to perfect for about three
weeks now, and it's called dirty Movies. Post a clip
of it on my Instagram. But I ended up finishing
that song in the wee hours of the morning on
the London tour, and so I decided to test it
(02:34):
out immediately for the The Lovely People in Glasgow and
it went over really well. And I think that one
of the things I love most about the tour was
how fucking cool the fans are over there. They're fans
of country music, but they're so open minded and they're
really there to listen. They're so quiet, and we interacted
(02:58):
with them, but like I mean, it was like they
were just listening to every word. And we worked so
hard on our lyrics and as sometimes it can be
hard when you're playing a bar show and people are
talking and you can't even hear yourself because people are
talking so loud. And I understand, like, I'm not going
to act like I've never gone to a show and
talked like the whole time, But as an artist, it's
just a very rewarding thing when you get the opposite.
(03:19):
And these audiences were just like so focused and so
like honed in and listening to every word and it
just means a lot because we work very, very hard
on these and I just felt really safe there. Um.
I felt safe there in many ways, Um, you know,
well for starters, human rights. Uh. Second of all, it
was my friend Um from London was there and we
(03:43):
she got shows around. She's so sweet. Um, she's moving
to l A. I met her there, but she lives
in London and she was like, you know, giving me
a safety brief on my like one block walk to
my hotel after we'd went gone out one night, and
I was like, Rosanna, Um, I appreciate it, and I
it's good to know, but I'd like you to remember that,
(04:05):
like we have guns where I'm from, and I am
like constantly on the lookout, Like I was, like, I
live in Los Angeles. She was like a good point.
But it's really weird to think. I mean, they definitely
have like knife crime and stuff, but uh, there's crime everywhere.
There's always gonna be bad people. But it was just
a really interesting thing. It's very it's just very interesting
(04:26):
like thought to be walking around and be like, there's
no guns here, Like what a weird thing. Also, on
the subject of UK politics, which I'm not gonna get
too into because I don't want to talk about things
I'm not super well versed in. But it was a
really weird time to be in the UK because they
had just had their prime ministers stepped down after forty
four days in office and the pound was so far
(04:47):
in the hole because she come up with this like
horrible economic policy that was like the one thing every
single person in the UK and Scotland could agree on
was that her economic plan was like absolute garbage. So
she had to step down and it was just a
very chaotic time. And Robin, who's from Canada, we were
in an interview and she like looks down her phone
and got the notification. She was like, hey, do you
guys see that, like the prime minister stepped down? And
(05:08):
everyone's like what, And I was like, you got to
break that to a bunch of Brits yourself. It was
pretty um. It's definitely an interesting time. You could feel
there was like some tension in the air. Uh. I
do end up following a lot of a lot of
British politics, though, because I read Reuter's and BBC, I
think that they're two of the most reliable perspectives you
(05:30):
can get on us politics because they don't care about
our feelings, so they're just like saying the facts and
there's no agenda there, so you couldn't really trust it
because it's just like the black and white, like what
happened of things without everything becoming an off ed, you know.
So I know, like a good bit, but it was like,
it was definitely a very dramatic time to be there. Um,
but we had so much fun and everyone is so
(05:51):
lovely and when we come back, I'm gonna talk about
some of my favorite spots that we visited. All right,
So I'm just gonna go ahead and brag here for
a second. My most consistent talent is being able to
(06:13):
find an amazing restaurant in a city I've never been before,
nearly without fail. And I told my manager taught this
and he was like, well, okay, Lely, I hope that
your biggest talent is songwriting. And I was like, yes,
but here's the thing. I'm a lot more consistent with
finding restaurants than I am with finding a hit song.
And he was like, okay, well that makes sense, and
I was like, yeah, it's just numbers thing, but I'm
(06:35):
really good at it. And I think it's because I
know how to speak the language of y'all previews, because
sometimes you see a place that doesn't have great reviews
and then you realize it's just a bunch of Karen's
go there, probably because they were told to you by
like some blog or Instagram blog or whatever, and then
they go and they're like, I don't like this, and
it's like, Okay, you were never gonna like it, Karen,
And now they're they have like a three point five
(06:55):
star rating. But I know how to look out for
a Karen, which also makes me good things on Amazon.
But um, yeah, it's something I can do really quickly.
We had so many, like, so many great places that
we went to in the UK. Um. We went to
this really cute tapas place in Glasgow which now that
I'm saying it, totally forgot the name of. What a
(07:17):
dummy um, But that was really awesome. In London, I
found this incredible vintage market. I'm also good at finding
like shops and stuff and just we explored Shortage and
that was like amazing. But there was this one little
bar and it was called the Cinema Bar, and Shortage
(07:38):
I believe was the name. But it was so cute
when we walk in and there's like this crazy psychedelic
wallpaper and uh a neon sign that says I only
moved forward, never backward, darling, and I thought that was
so cool. In all these disco balls and they had
really great cocktails. It felt very like Alice in Wonderland,
like trippy vibes, and it was amazing. Um. One of
the girls who was there, our photographer who works for
(07:58):
Songs Stuffergets. Her name is Jess. She's so sweet and
she's twenty two and she'd never taken like a shot before,
and so of course I had to be like a horrible,
horrible influence and I made her take her first shot
and it was called the crack Baby. So now we've
just been that's her nickname. Now call her crack Baby. Um.
So that was amazing. But like, my favorite place I
think we went to period was this place called Blame Gloria,
(08:22):
and it's just this absolutely incredible bar and it's underground.
We walked in and it was like one of those
places that has like glitter in the drinks and like
it looked very psychedelic. I mean, it was just like
such a fucking vibe. And we walked down there and like,
oh my god, where are we? And I was like,
you're welcome, guys, um, but we I ordered like two
(08:44):
of these glitter martinis, right alright? Order sorry? I ordered
one of these glitter martinis and then a round of shots.
There were six of them in there, And first of all,
she hands me to Martiniz and I was like, I
only ordered one. She's like, oh, it's by one going
free until seven pm. And I was like, how is
that financially responsible of a business? But okay, thank you
(09:04):
very much. And then we got the these six shots
and they were all in test tubes and they had
gummy worms in them. They were Halloween themed and five
of them were normal silver tequila, and one of them
was gold tequila that was infused with chili peppers. And
you didn't know which one was which, and you couldn't
tell because of the like colors of the test tubes.
And so we all took a shot and I was like,
(09:27):
I know, because this was my fucking idea to be
the one who got the hot one. Sure enough, I
got the hot one. It was on fire, but I
like love spicy food. So that wasn't so much the problem.
The issue was that it was gold tequila, because goldequila
and silver tequila are not the same fucking thing. I
don't understand why. I mean, I know the color is gold,
but I'm like, it's not better, it's not it's not
a gold medal. It's actually quite a few steps behind
(09:49):
the silver one, if you are being completely honest. I
don't know anybody who likes gold tequila more than silver. Um.
But it was so funny and we just had like
such a blast in there had these really cool like
this is like selfie wall where you could take pictures
in these TV screens because there were cameras around, and
we just like could not have had more fun. And
the girls I was with, we're absolutely amazing. Um. I
(10:13):
love like traveling with my manager Todd because he's always
down for a good time. And we I got to
go um to two of the soho houses in London,
so I was saying very big gime um, which I
went with my friend and those were blast I mean
it's just like everything feels so much more exciting and
posh there and that was really fun. Um. We went
(10:35):
to this other place in Manchester and it was called
Behind Closed Doors, and like all the places were closing
down and we really wanted to go out as our
last night at tour, and I was like, Okay, guys,
I'm gonna I'm gonna do the magic thing that I
do or I find as a dope plays. We walked
down and it's like this porn themed bar, which is
very funny because I've been playing my song Dirty Movies
out and about and um, very on theme. But it
(10:57):
was like so cool, and we made friends with the bartender.
We had these like crazy drinks and like, it was
just so fun and it was the best way to
end tour. We all ended up getting like a little
tipsy and definitely over sharing. So now I think we
all know like so much about each other. Um, but
it was really special and twenty had posted this really
sweet thing about how she had been going through a
(11:18):
breakup during the tour, which was super sad, and how
we'd all been there for her and how we made
it like she felt really supported, and um, it was
so heartbreaking to watch her go through that while we're
having this amazing week. But it really shows what happens
when women support women and it's not just career wise,
it's emotionally and I just adore these girls. I feel
(11:39):
like we're bond it for life. And I had so
much freaking about so I guess to sum it up,
I felt so much freer there, which I suppose I
am by political definitions, but um, the UK fans are
(12:03):
amazing the London Show. I mean, like, I got to
meet so many of you. I met people that had
been following me for ten years and it was just
so special. Shoutout Josie and Rocky for finally, Like, I mean,
these people had seen me on YouTube when I was
in high school and they followed me this long and
it just meant so much. Um, everyone was so kind.
(12:24):
So many of you guys listen to my podcast. I
want to give a huge shout out to everybody who
told me that they listen to my podcast. That means
a lot because I was like, I always wonder like
the demographic of the people who listened to this, And
when I meet you guys at meet greets and you
tell me, I'm like, Okay, it is a wide asked
demographic and I'm happy that you guys listen. I'm happy
you guys really thank you so much. Um, I was
(12:44):
so awesome. But one of my favorite, favorite favorite moments
from tour was in Manchester. And I've been struggling a
little bit over the past year with not feeling like
an artist. I haven't been playing as many shows, i
haven't been writing for myself. I was kind of just
waiting out some stuff before I released new music, and
(13:04):
it wasn't necessarily by choice, but I've just started to
feel inspired again and so playing new songs, playing for
people who were just like a captive audience and not
just like a loud, rowdy bar. I mean, it made
me feel so so good. But on the last night
of tour, this lovely, lovely guy came up to me
and I think his name is Chris, and he had
(13:25):
a tattoo of the lyrics from Escape from the Second
Verse that are, like I heard, apples don't fall far
from family trees. So I taught myself to fly and
he had like this gorgeous like I think it was
a sparrow next to it, and I just started crying
and he was like, man, I just thought this was
a cool tattoo, like you know, like he was like
didn't know what to do. With this crying girl, and
I was just like, it just means so much that
(13:46):
people hear my words and it means something to them.
And sometimes when I'm like crying in my bedroom in
Nashville and like not leaving the house, I forget that,
like I've impacted people and it just meant so much
and I can't wait to go back already. Um, it
was just incredible. I Mean, my best friend Candy Carpenter
had told me a lot about their experience in London
(14:11):
and the general vicinity over there and how amazing the
fans were, and I believe them, but once I saw
it for myself, I was like, holy sh it. So
this episode goes out to all the badass people in
the UK and Scotland. I did find out the hard
way that Scotland does not like to be called part
of the UK, so trying to respect to that. And yeah,
(14:32):
so thank you guys all so much. I already can't
wait to be back. But the good news is I
get to go back to Portland, Maine tomorrow, and I'm
really excited. I'm shooting some really cool content there for
this new partnership I'm doing, and I get to go
back to my old high school and talk to my principle,
and I get to see my family and just show
this camera crew around my hometown, which is like the dream.
(14:54):
So I'm really really excited about that. There's lots of
things happening. It's a really special. Sure, that whole tour
was really special. Thank you to everyone who came. And
I'm Kaylie Short. This is too much to say. I'll
see you next week as we dissect the Taylor Swift album.
Don't go asking questions. I'm going to say now, turn
(15:21):
it out. You
