Speaker 1 (00:00):
Unpacking the Toolbox is a production of Shondaland Audio in
partnership with iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
The Scandals.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
As Katie though, I don't even know what episode to pick.
There's not even like, gee, how can we even tease it?
How can we even tease It's it's it's our Iago,
It's Scandal's menace. Is he good? Is he bad? What
sideer you on? He's one of the most complicated characters

(00:47):
probably in television history. The monologues upon monologues and.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
The work man. The acting is just off the chain. Yeah,
you have so.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Many things to talk about. The acting, it's off the chain.
This is the one and only hour forever and only
Cyrus Bean, Yes, May bye, the one and only Jeff.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Erry Cherry, Jeffy Hello.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Oh my god.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
We've been saving We, like Katie was saying earlier, there's
just so many episodes that we could choose to bring
you in on, and we were like, we have to
keep waiting, we have to keep just trying to find
the perfect episode, and you know this is one of many.
So we're so thrilled that you're going with it, and we're.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Going to be bugging you again, but can you tell
us How did this Because it's an epic story, I
know it, but I just want to relish in it.
How did you get this part.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Back in my home territory of Chicago because Seanda was
also from the Chicago area, and I would find out
later she saw Steple of Theater Shows and I've been
a member of that company since nineteen seventy six. I'm
ninety four years old. Oh my god. Somewhere weeks or

(02:01):
months later, she casts me as Meredith's dad, where t
R is attending Kate Burton, another Shonda company member.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Ar Sally Langston.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, in early Alzheimer's and she mistakes TR for me,
her ex husband and father of Meredith, And how a
writer's brain works and whatever. Anyway, it started, Oh, thank god, Shonda,
thank you, and and then it led to scandal Land

(02:40):
and I auditioned, auditioned.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
What was it do you remember? Was it like a
big cyrus speech? Was it like where did you have?
Like epic lines?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Something? Something? I think there was something from the pilot. Anyway,
we get notes for whatever it was from the net,
from the network, and and Shanna says, here's the translation,
jeff Less lovely professor and more Ram Emmanuel Ram Emmanuel
would end up chief of staff for Barack Obama yep,

(03:13):
I think, and and then mayor of Chicago and now
he's an ambassador somewhere for Joe Biden.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
But she wanted you to be not like a sweet
chief of staff. She wanted you to be like which
of course she was. It more like leaning towards like ruthless.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Right, a ruthless killer inside.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah. Yeah. Ram is brother to Ari Emmanuel, one of
the founder chief muckety MUCKs of whatever Cia William Morris
for those of.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
You listening who don't know, Ari Emmanuel is who Jeremy
Pivens character is based on in Entourage. So like we're
talking about the sharkiest shark of agents and his brother
is a chief of staff, and the two of them,
I am sure are the most cutthroat, shark fucking driven,
insane workaholics.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Like, oh yeah, I remember, oh yes, so I remember
the Ram Emmanuel. I said, Okay, I got a I
got a big sense of this, and I started I
read a little bit, and and there was a thing
maybe he first worked for Clinton, and Clinton gets in
and wins, and rom is sitting with his staff member
and going over loyal and disloyal people, you know from

(04:25):
from the campaign, and he and he'd hear a disloyal name,
and apparently they were they were eating and he had
a fork in his hand, and when he heard a
disloyal name, he went dead. Wow, continue to continue dead.
And so I thought, Okay, I get the note.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yeah we got Cyrus.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Did you did you audition more than once or was
it just one?

Speaker 2 (04:49):
I think there was warn some notes and then I
did it again.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Gotcha? Wow?

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Did you have any idea? I mean, did Shanda pull
you aside or Linda pull you a I'd everyone be like,
this is like Cyrus is going to be the character.
He became like did you know it was going to
have this sort of.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
For us? You know, for a minute, even though I'd
gotten a note and all of that, maybe first or
second episode or something, you know, maybe just for one episode,
I was under the illusion that I was some combo
of like Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen. You know, a
white knight.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
That is hilarouous, right right?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Oh god, I remembered Jeff, No, they told you no.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Yeah, there's horns on that white hat. There's a red horn.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
That white hat. Oh, my god, I felt just so like,
tell us about this is an amazing story too, for
those of you who haven't heard it, tell us when
you found out that cyrus Bean was gay.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Linda would know the first draft of episodes, you know,
a week or so before me and I hear a
yelp from the back yard and we had a practical
uh and emotional Chinese wall like I'm not gonna I'm
not gonna learn stuff because my wife's the casting director.

(06:17):
Before year, I'm on Katie and Carrie for.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
You all over that ship. I would have been like, tell.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Me, yeah, everything, I know you're reading it. I know
you're reading a draft, and I may have to break
the rule. What do you come on? What's up? And
she goes, uh no, no, no, no, it was just
the number of characters that we have to do or something.
She lied. And then when we find out no episode

(06:43):
numbers these days, you know, there was a few episodes
in right now, and my brain went, you know, wait
a second, is there anything in the three four whatever
episodes that you know betrays this or her contradicts this?
And of course it didn't, because Shana knows everything, and
and I went, oh cool, Okay, that proved really fun

(07:06):
to play, you know at different times.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
Yeah, like you're you're working in a Republican presidency. I
mean that's wild.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Yeah, it's just But also what was so great was
that it was, you know, like all of Shanda's characters
that are, you know, either gay or whatever they're they're
treated with the same just sort of nonchalantness as every
other character. And that was that's what's so refreshing from
you know, for as a gay man, because back in
the day, you know, in the eighties when I was

(07:33):
growing up, you know, the gay characters were sort of
cartoonish and over the top and exaggerated, and it was
just so.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
That it was about that.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Yes, and this was he just happened to be gay. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Yeah. And we don't get into Cyruses until this episode
that we're talking about today. Do we even get into
really that that might have been a struggle for Cyrus
at some point, and we're talking about season three, episode fourteen.
I mean, that is so far into the series before
we even really get to unpack Cyrus's yeah, sort of past.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Do you know how much I sobbed watching this episode
and watching those scenes, like it's such an emotional rollercoaster
this episode.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
I totally agree. Okay, today we are talking about because
we got to get into this this Cyrus backstory. It's
episode three fourteen, which was called Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,
and it aired on March twentieth, twenty fourteen.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
So crazy. And it was written by Mark Fish and
it was directed by Paul mccrane. Do you guys remember
Paul mccrane.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
I do remember Paul, I don't, Jeff, I don't remember.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Did he direct more than one episode?

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Wasn't Paul a regular or a heavy recurring on like
er as an actor?

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (08:50):
I think that. Oh, I think so. And like Tommy
and like Tommy Vericon, like a lot of people, you know,
he went mostly directing.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
Yes, he was also a character in the movie Fame.
Oh my god, Paul mccrane, I believe if I'm not mistaken,
I think I remember.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Oh my god, he was. He was redhead.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Yes, yes, yes, it's this, yes, yes, from Fame the movie.
Remember he was the guy that was like in the
closet I think in Fame the movie, which is so ironic.
God that he's directing this episode.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
That is exactly right. He was lovely.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Yeah, he was an actor, which makes it so great
for us to be directed by her.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
You know, so it was directed by Paul and it
was guest starring. This list is insane. It's John Tenny is,
Andrew Nichols, Candy Alexander is Marie Wallace, Paul Aidelstein is
Leo Bergen, Nazanine Boniatti is Adnan Salive, Charmila Devar as
Lauren Wellman.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Vanya Asher is Ethan, Donorah Walcott as reporter Caro Reese,
Rios's reporter, Peter, Jennifer Pio as Vanessa Chandler, and Julia
Cho as Shelby Moss. Wow, that's a lot of people.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Yes, that's some pricey, pricey episode getting all these of
One of my.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Favorite guest stars on here is Vanya Asher, who plays Ethan,
and he has so many great moments in this episode. Jeff,
he plays your right. Yeah, yeah, you know, I know,
so great.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
We love you, We love you. We need to have
him on here. Yes, vanish, our little Ethan, Vanya Asher. Okay, Jeff,
do you have the synopsis in front of you?

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Got it?

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Do you want to try to warm up your mouth?

Speaker 2 (10:29):
And yes, yes I do. Okay, here we go and
then I'll and then I'll add a Taga who got
shot has finally answered in the opening minutes, but then
the falling out causes catastrophic waves for Olivia, David rosenand
cyrus Is. The pieces are put together and things get
spicy when Hunk realizes that Quinn let herself get caught
while breaking into Olivia's safe.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
Oh my god, oh god, you do scandal past so
well and it's so throwaway.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Like listen, dear audiences, is humble, but wouldn't you agree
Katie could go faster than any of us.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
That such a motor mouth. It's terrible. I'm such a
motor We talked to you on this show. Any job
we get afterwards, people are like, you can slow down,
and I'm like, I'm like the worst act Humber. I'm
so trained Jeff in this episode, Like it's so depressing,

(11:27):
everybody listening. This is like the episode where we know
that that James has been shot off and it's right
off the top and it's the first thirty seconds of
the show. We see fully Jake Ballard put his gun
to James while he's running away and he gets shot.
It's absolutely horrible. But the episode is so beautiful because

(11:50):
it goes back into the history of how James and
Cyrus fell in love and j and Cyrus has the
best facial hair I've ever seen, and talk to us
about that.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
That neck beard, the neck beard.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
I'm watching. It was so funny. I forgot we ever
did that in the makeup chair and they heard, you know,
you put some blue you know, stick them on, and
then they blow you know, little bits of a couple
of colors of hair.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
How yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
They put sticker ship on your face, is it, lind
And then they like pieces of little hairy pubes like on.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Your face exactly, exactly.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
The sweetest scene because you realize it's like them flirting,
Like like James says to you something about like get
rid of that neck beard, and you're like, you don't
think Cyrus is going to listen to him. And then
the next scene we realized the neck beard has been shaved,
and and you know, James is like, oh, he's like
listening to what I say. He like obviously wants to

(12:59):
impress me. It's so sweet, and it's so like unlike
the Cyrus we know to be, you know, kind of
vulnerable and like flirty and.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Shy and just yes, yes, watching Cyrus like fall for James.
It's so sweet.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
Yeah, it's so sweeting, I mean, highlights of the episode,
y'all take us through what jeff favorite acting moments of
your own you can or other people, but really, like,
were there moments that you remember shooting of this episode
or scenes when you watched it back that just like
made you just I personally think so many, Oh my god,

(13:38):
there's so many. But for me, the end of this
episode where James is being a little baby and you're
not taking him to the dance of the inaugural ball
and then it's the best like Gladys Night song ever
and you're like fuck it and you go and you
grab his hand and you take off the red red
velvet rope that's holding him back, and you're like get
out here, and you make him dance like different of everyone.

(14:01):
I was a sobbing so was I.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
Oh, I loved I loved that moment so much, and
I was struck by so many things rewatching you guys,
remember Shonda really early at her house, you guys, maybe
we watched the pilot and write the cast and and
I remember a little after it us just going, oh

(14:26):
my god, Oh my god. I think we might have
been the first people at the gold Rush, you know.
And remember Shanda saying something like I know what I
sort of intended hoped for, but I didn't. I didn't
know that someone that we could pack that much into

(14:51):
an episode. And I was struck by that again watching this,
because I hadn't watched an episode in a long time,
and and it was like, my god, there's you know,
fourteen storylines yep, and.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
Twelve climaxes and yes, and all into forty two minutes,
forty thirteen minutes.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
And thirteen surprises and.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
An a partridge in a pear tree and a partridge in.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
A pair tree. I mean, just crazy.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
We'll be right back, guys. I love the scene when
you guys are dancing. I love the the shots that
they get of the people's expressions that are watching you guys.
And there's a shot of a woman that's like wraw,
like she's just appalled. Yes, it's just like brilliant.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
One thing, hell is the head of the Republican National Committee,
yes two years ago doing what is he doing?

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Yes? Yes, yes, yeh. But also for the audience, I
mean this this aired what what year was this, twenty fourteen?
So yeah, you know, it was still a bit like
it was still a bit shocking for a lot of
America unfortunately, to see these two men on a hit show,
a political hit show, you know, Republican dancing with another

(16:14):
man his lover, yes, his boyfriend. That was still shocking.
But how freaking amazing and wonderful they sean to put
it out there and put it in people's faces and
made it like, you know, showed it with respect and
dignity and humanity like every other couple, you know what
I mean. It was just it felt so good, Oh
my god.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
And it's still like I feel like that's still tracks
like we're still fucked.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
Like I'm just like, ah, oh yeah, we need more.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
Of that way more. My favorite, one of my favorite
Kerry Washington acting moments of the week was when Jeff
Perry is outside and Tony gold Well Fitz is doing
his like speech and Jeffy is just like outside, like
also doing the speech and like how like honestly Jeff
wrote it or they were it together or whatever, but

(17:01):
Jeff is sort of like, you know, nailing this performance
outside and it's like that adorable like yeah, and then
the scene where you tell you tell fits that you're.

Speaker 4 (17:14):
Gay, and you know, I almost do and almost, and
I think we assume Tony's beautiful face, yes, that if
he put words to it, he'd go, Cyrus, it's cool.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
I know, yeah, you know, but I can only go
so far as to say, it's a very opinionating journalist, Cyrus.
Are you Are you in love? Yeah? I am. He
makes me happy and uh and that's all that matters.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Yeah, you actually say they make me happy, you know,
I YEA make me happy. And I'm telling you that
there has to have been a gay writer in that
writing room. I know we had. We had several because
that is very true to life, Like that's so real.
I know so many friends that that's exactly how they
came out, even myself talking with some straight friends in

(18:08):
the beginning. That's that's how it all sort of, you know,
works out. Those are the things you say. You don't
quite say you're gay, You kind of, you know, dance
around it. But but your good friend understands and still
loves you. And it was just so real to life
that scene, and it was it was so great, so good.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
You know, Another aspect of it, you guys, gigantic. For me,
I've been so lucky to play so many different kinds
of things and different kinds of stories. And I think
like most like most of us, there's exceptions in our
acting lives, but it's a cathartic inventing thing, and you

(18:45):
finish that day or you finish that project, and it's like, cool,
what's next? You know, In all of the Scandal time
I got bloom and when from the time it was
a you know, a few weeks duration right where we
first find out about a script and we go on

(19:07):
cry not going to change and they're going to kill
Dan's character, and then all the way to Linda and
I going to the night shoot of Dan on the ground,
you know, on the pavement.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
And.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
You guys went in the middle of the night to
like see it through.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
We went in the yeah, we went. We went sometime
during the night, and we brought him some sort of
little cake or something. And and because I think and
I think it was his final final day, final season shoot, you.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
Know, yeah, like series rap, you know, they say, you know,
they say when it's your season rap on Katie Low's,
but this was a series rap on Dan Bugatinski as
James Novak and that scene, which was the other last one.
I want to mention this scene where Scott Foley to
jog all, y'all memory your gladiator's memories. Jake Ballard has

(20:10):
this short monologue at the end that says, I'm sorry
I had to do it sloppy, but it had to
look like there was a carjacking and I'm going to
sit next to you and it's coming. It's almost there.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
You're you're not alone.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
I'm here with you, and you're you're almost dead. And
you can hear like Dan struggling to James struggling to breathe,
I mean it.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
Is well, and then and then and then James struggles
to say ella, he tries to say ella, and Jake
Ballard says, your daughter is gonna be okay, She's safe.
Your daughter's safe. Oh, it's heartbreaking, heart.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
It's hurting breaking, it's heart.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
And the fact that you and Linda, I know that
there was a couple of other actors and people from
Scandal they showed up that night. I can't remember who
else did, but that goes to show you how how
close we all were and how much we love the show.

Speaker 2 (20:58):
You got.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
You actually showed up on a day off like that
doesn't happen on TV and movies now, just to send
off an actor that we all love, you know what
I mean, and knowing it was such an intense, difficult
scene to be there with him and for him so wonderful.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Well it was it was Dan, it was knowing him
for years. It was beautifully that relationship was written. How
how much fun it was to always play with them,
the scenes that we were given.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
My god, yeah, you know, GEARM and I are in
the middle midst of watching season three. The work you
did on this show was so fucking bananas. And I
watch all the streamers too, and my god, the work
you did on this show was so increda. Yeah, it's

(21:51):
really and could you imagine? Can you believe that what
they wrote for you, I mean, the heart attack scene,
the gay relationship that like your head blowing off? How
did you do that? And not Oh my god, remember
you running down the hall and I feel like at
that time you had like you're you're running, You're running
underneath the fucking.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
I mean, hell, there wasn't a tonality, a color, something,
a brilliant something that Sean had didn't create for my guy.
I used the phrase TV Heaven as a password in something,
and I can't remember what because I don't want to.
Biggest scandal would be too obvious, you know, for people

(22:32):
hacking me or something.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
But password, yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
Whatever, TV Heaven is really what that was. It was,
and we would be remiss to not mention the other
glorious I mean, okay, so this episode huge, huge, I mean,
the death scene is the worst thing ever. The backstory
of how Jeff of how Cyrus and James got together

(22:57):
is absolutely beautiful and incredible. And then of course we
have the Huck Quinn situation where they're at odds with
each other and Quinn has to like break She breaks
into Olivia's safe, but she gets caught on camera, and
so Huck is like, you got caught on purpose. You
would never get caught, and he gets me. I'm in

(23:19):
like in a full blown like lock up against the wall.
He's like smushed my face up against the wall, and
then he flips me around and we just start making it.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
Katie, I don't really remember, and and you spit in
my face and spit is just rolling down my face
and I think I licked my lips and then we
start making out.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
Yeah, and then we we leave. We leave the little
scene with with the amazing scene, and Katie's like, and yes, he's.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
One tear coming down, coming down. I was proud of that.

Speaker 3 (23:55):
That was were talking about cringe worthy acting moments. So
I'm usually talking just mad ship about like what I've
done and how I've ruined the show. But I have
to say in this episode, I was like, dig I
love that that Lougie was massive and disgusting, but to
de form for.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
You and I I was probably like Katie just spit, like,
do like just spit in my face, like we don't
mess around.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
No, favorite that was scripted or we just did it.

Speaker 1 (24:23):
It had sure it was. I think it was. Yeah,
I think it was.

Speaker 3 (24:27):
It had to have been scripted. But Yo, we were hot.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
I was like, I was so hot. And the toolbox,
the red toolbox makes an appearance in that scene. You
rarely see the toolbox and you see it in the scene.
Yeah you do.

Speaker 3 (24:40):
Did anybody eat in this episode? Jeff? I don't know
about you, but and you're the best actor in the world.
So G and I love when actors eat on camera,
and we feel like some of the worst actors are
always pretending and like pushing their food around and they're
not eating, and it's such a missed opportunity. And I
always say Lori metcalf is like the best eater on
television ever, Like every episode of you Know, they always
had family dinners, and she's.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
So big bang theory too. She's always eating and she
does it.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
It's such a gift. Jeff, what do you do when
you eat on camera?

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Do you? I'm depends on the day, it's like, oh, ship,
I didn't go to craft service. I'm eating. Yeah, I'm eating,
you know. And then and then other days it's like
table scene, We're going to take things a million times. No, no, no,
I'm gonna push it around and have half a broccoli.

Speaker 4 (25:29):
You know.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
There was eating done in this episode Andrew and Mellie,
which we haven't talked about.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
Right and there and then there was another bit of eating,
and it's Dan Belkatinski eating that fake blood while he's
gurgling on the ground that they put on his face.
Hit me in that blood, which is made out of
like carabs. Sorry, too soon, too soon.

Speaker 3 (25:57):
You're fucking hilarious. And you know what I think too,
So much of Scandal that I think was so what
made it the genius term TV Heaven was I also think,
you know, Jeff was such a leader for you guys listening.
I mean, Carrie was obviously our number one, She's the
best number one in the business. But Jeffy, coming from
Ensemble Studio, I mean Ensemble theater Land, was the great

(26:22):
joiner of Like you know, we had a writer's dinner
every year where the actors took the writers to dinner,
and Jeff would always start by making a rousing speech.
You know that was like beautiful and theatrical and filled
with gratitude for the writers who from what I hear
reasons that never happens like that never happens where the

(26:44):
actors take the writers out and thank them. And then
you know, if we were at you know, Linda and
Jeff would host for years these like Sunday potluck hangs
at their house where we would watch the episode and
like draft up our tweets, and Jeff would like say,
you know, you were just so the like you were
kind of like our artistic director in a way, like

(27:05):
the ensemble, you know what I mean, you were such
a leader and you were such a like you know,
and I think it comes from your theater background. And
then I think, not coincidentally, I think so many of
us were theater people who also felt that the health
of the ensemble was more important than any one person's
you know, storyline or you know whatever. And it just

(27:30):
always felt like we were on this TV heaven group
of players.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
It was the best yet, and Shonda already had evidenced
all that, and it would just continue where wherever it
made sense she got. She would repeat these relationships, I know,
you know.

Speaker 3 (27:52):
Oh my god, I mean it's crazy the amount of
people that had been on all of her other shows already.
I can't take this episode.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
It is so sad, it's so sad, and it's got
so Yeah, like I said, it's just got so many,
so many things beautifully put into it.

Speaker 3 (28:15):
We will be back with more after the break. We Jeff,
have you ever done? We always do six degrees of horror?

Speaker 4 (28:28):
Gee?

Speaker 3 (28:28):
Has Jeff done horror?

Speaker 1 (28:30):
Funny? You should ask, Katie Funny. You should ask because
it's not quite a horror film. Although some folks, some
nasty folks out there, would dare say that the lead
actress's performance was horrific, not I, of course, Jeff has
done a thriller film with an icon that I have

(28:55):
tattooed all over my body called Body of Evidence.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
Oh my god.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
And Jeff was in this movie and in one of
the most iconic scenes in the elevator with Madonna, Willem Dafoe,
and Jeff Perry's in that elevator as Madonna on zips
Willem Dafoe's zipper to play with his wee wee while
everyone is in the elevator.

Speaker 3 (29:17):
True, yes, yes, yes, Jeff, So Jeff know about.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Yes, So Jeff did a movie called Body of Evidence
with Madonna, Willem Dafoe, Joe Montaigna. Right, I believe? And
may I also point out that Jeff's birthday is August sixteen,
nineteen fifty five. Madonna's birthday is August sixteen, and she's
like three years younger than you. I believe. Can you

(29:44):
believe you have the same birthday as Madonna? Oh my?
Did you know that?

Speaker 2 (29:49):
Oh my god.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
You're welcome, Jeff, you are welcome.

Speaker 2 (29:52):
You are bested.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
In this episode, we have ever done the fact that
we are having a Madonna horror Jeff Perry cross over
a moment my brain is about to explode off my back.
I didn't know it was possible.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
Julianne Moore was in that movie. Jeff tell Us, just
really quick your thoughts on what that experience was like,
you know that.

Speaker 2 (30:10):
Was that was all amazing. Madonna was at, you know,
a height of fame. But you know an early acting
gig and beautiful actor named Stan Shaw and I were
like gargoyle lawyers.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
Yes, you know that's the perfect at the at the end.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
Of either side of a table or something like that. Anyway,
weeks into it, it feels like in my.

Speaker 1 (30:38):
Memory Houlli Eedle was his name.

Speaker 2 (30:41):
Yeah, And and he's moving people around for a shot.
Then you go, you go here, and he looks at
me and he goes the background.

Speaker 1 (30:55):
You go, you go, oh hell yeah, yeah yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:59):
So we shoot the we shoot this little scene and
Stan is fucking hilarious. You know where we're where we're
going out to, you know, sit down somewhere, and he's like,
oh my god, oh oh, pary background.

Speaker 6 (31:17):
Oh, Perry background, Parry, put him, put him, put him
in any scene. He fade red and little little director
know how freaking iconic.

Speaker 3 (31:32):
One of the best actors in the world.

Speaker 1 (31:33):
Anyway, that made me very very happy, oh that you
were in that movie. And also just and really quickly,
let's let's also mention that Jeff was in an iconic
show called My So Called Life where it was one
of the first TV shows I believe in the eighties,
right that that wrote respectfully for a gay character. Wilson

(31:53):
Cruz played a gay character named Ricky, and it was
sort of the first time that there was, uh, you know,
just a respect around the writing and a care and
a thoughtfulness. And Jeff played the teacher, right, Jeff, were
you the teacher? Yes, you played Richard Kotimski the teacher. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
Jordan Catalano making out in the boiler room literally changed
my life.

Speaker 1 (32:15):
Was that a show?

Speaker 3 (32:17):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (32:17):
Yes, that show.

Speaker 3 (32:19):
Claire Danes and Jared Letto, two of the biggest actors
of our time, are from that show when they were kids. Like,
it was unbelievable. I'm trying to think if there's anything
else that we didn't touch before.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
Some of the great scenes in this episode was Abby
and Rosen, Like when Abby's trying to find out what
is going on with you? Rosen, I'm your girlfriend, Like
I love you. What happens happens to me. That was
some great Those were some great.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Scenes were great, Yes, so so so great.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
And Quinn and Charlie going to the guy to blackmail
him to take the fall for the for the carjacking.
That was a hot scene that shot from below and
Georgia pointing the gun. You look so hot in that scene, Katie.
I loved its.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
Ge Then also a fun fact Rowan's death. He talks
a lot in this episode about his death responsibility and
it's wrong. He says that he was ordered to kill
one hundred and eighty three people individually, but he also
ordered fits to take down Flight five twenty two, which
held three hundred and twenty nine people, So in actuality,
Rowan's death responsibility is five hundred and twelve. So the

(33:26):
scandal researcher missed that. And then Jeffy, you had Twitter
at the time when we did this show, right, yeah,
we all had to.

Speaker 2 (33:34):
So have you guys talked probably in the last two years,
you have kind of how Twitter became a thing. Right
at the beginning of our episode? Oh yeah, oh yeah,
of our season. Yeah, yeah, here's what I remember, correct me,
I think Carrie, she said, Look, so I worked on
both of Barack Obama's campaigns, and I learned a lot

(33:55):
about social media and I kind of loved it. And
when I first read scandal, I was like, oh my god,
this is dependent on you know, ten surprises per week
and what we call appointment television versus no, I'm gonna
take it and I'll watch it whenever I want. Appointment
television was almost disappeared. And she said, I think we

(34:15):
could make this sort of water cooler, watch it on
the night, and Twitter would really help that. And we've
got to get Jeff Perry to learn how to do Twitter,
you know, or whatever, you know. And all took to it,

(34:35):
and we kind of hated it a little, and then
we kind of liked it. And then it was like,
oh shit, this is keeping us alive. Yes, let's do
our jobs.

Speaker 3 (34:42):
Let's keep our jobs. Maybe we really like this job.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
But I think I think Kerrie went to Shonda real
quick and said, they'll already find me to be a
bossy pants. Let's not make it worse, Shanda, will you
say it to your idea? And I think that's how
it happened.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
That's exactly right.

Speaker 3 (35:01):
That's how it happened. And we have we read some
tweets of the time every episode, because it's a real
nice time capsule for what the gladiators were feeling at
the time that it aired. And we are going to
read some and I'm going to bet that some of
them are about you, maybe or we'll see you. Maybe
they're talking about Oh my god, this is hilarious. Jimmy

(35:23):
Kimmel Live tweeted on March twenty, twenty fourteen, a new
episode of our telenovela Acan with Jimmy Giermo in the
cast of Scandal Tonight on Kimmel. And there's a picture
of Escandolo, which do you remember doing that? I barely
remember that, Jeff, did you?

Speaker 2 (35:39):
I remember well that we went to his studio.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Yeah, and we wed this. We shot like high school.

Speaker 3 (35:47):
Like oh yes, we shot in telen novella for Jimmy Kimmel,
as like little sketches that he would air like on
Thursday nights.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
Yeah, and you and I played like high school like
sweet hearts. Katie.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
Do you remember that? So yeah, yeah, I totally totally
totally remember that.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
I'm looking at a picture where.

Speaker 3 (36:08):
Oh, you have a beret on? Why the fuck is
just wearing a beret?

Speaker 2 (36:14):
And it looks like I have ear rings.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
Do you have any recollection of that job?

Speaker 2 (36:20):
No, I kind of do now, I kind of do that.
There were these funny little sketches.

Speaker 3 (36:23):
Yeah, yep, yep, Okay, we also have at Pawnee God
back to back. Champs tweeted, I legit have no idea
how scandal is going to fit all that's supposed to
happen tonight in forty five ish minutes. Oh my fucking go.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
And then Chrissy at Underscore. Chrissy tweeted, Preparing myself death
by Shonda Is on the Horizon hashtag scandal. You could
say that again.

Speaker 3 (36:48):
I know with this episode was death, people were really
freaking stressed. We were all so stressed. I mean, we
didn't know who was going to die either. Oh there's
a cute picture of me at Young Hollywood tweeted Quinn
is officially fave hashtag Gladiator after hanging with at Katie
q Low's from Scandal. Don't miss it at ten pm MONEYBC.
I have no recollection of doing that show. You look

(37:08):
so good cute? Okay, look how long it is.

Speaker 1 (37:13):
Fitz m Wang tweeted, damn you, Scott Polly, why do
you keep getting hotter each time you appear on screen.
It's becoming impossible to hate you. Wow, damn, I know.

Speaker 2 (37:24):
And I remember how quickly that the Goldwin and uh
uh Scott were especially picked on because they're genetic freaks. Yes,
I guess who's gonna get naked most.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Yes, you had to get fully naked. Had to get
fully naked a lot in that that the biggest fight
scene ever, that was like nine minutes long. It was
unbelievable know that.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
Oh that scene was nuts. And we wore little peeni pouches,
okay guys, uh so that the camera could make it
seem like, you know, we're completely naked. And I think
mine fell off in the middle of the scene and
they had to tell me that that happened because I

(38:09):
was having too much fun right a scene.

Speaker 3 (38:12):
There's an pitch you were in, a fever pitch of
like acting the shit out of the scene, and it's like, dude,
your banana hammock fell off, and you're like, oh shit,
it did. Peenie pouch I have not yet heard, and
peenie pouch from here on out will be.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
What it is forever. Soa peenie pouches and.

Speaker 3 (38:32):
People were really stressed that Glorious Glower tweeted only one
more sleep until I could find out hashtag who got shot?
That was the hashtag, you guys, the hashtag was got shot.
My money's on David Rosen dot dot dot Shonda Rhymes
just can't let him win hashtag scandal Jeff, you are
the absolute greatest. Will you please come on the Scandal
Rewatch podcast. I'm packing the two bucks again because you have.

(38:53):
We are only in season three and it has been
killing us to even pick what would be worthy of
the Cyrus scenes and episodes.

Speaker 1 (39:03):
We haven't Katie, we haven't even touched on Jeff Perry's
acting process, like his process on set, which was epic,
and people would just let him do his thing, but
we we we have to have you on because there's
so much more to talk about.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
I remember, is you doing your memorization thing that you
have wonderful actress daughter Zoe Perry taught you, which was
you would write the first letter of every single word
of a sentence over on the side margin of the
piece of page. And I don't know why that helped you,
but it did.

Speaker 2 (39:33):
Yeah, yeah, for some reason. You know, with most people
supposedly it helps the accuracy. So you've got scandal podcast
recordings and you write SPR and you go back and
forth visually from the full words to the SPR and
then you can do it off the code and then

(39:54):
you know, da da da.

Speaker 1 (39:55):
I was just gonna say, Pedro Pascal, that actor, that
wonderful actor, just did an interview. It's all over the
internet where he does the same thing for his memorization
and that's the only way he memorizes things, and it's
it's it works.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
Well. He's really good friends with your daughter.

Speaker 2 (40:10):
Oh easy, Yes he is. He is.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
Oh man, Joe, it was so amazing to have you on, Jeff.
I cannot thank you enough. I love you so much.
Cyrus is and forever will be one of the best
all time television characters in television history. And someone needs
to put that in the Television Academy Museum or whatever.

Speaker 1 (40:32):
Not the right out, but say that again.

Speaker 3 (40:34):
I'm so great.

Speaker 2 (40:34):
We're going to all be. We're going to all be
in a Fourth of July float soon. Remind and remind people.
I don't know if you liked it, but we're still
in love.

Speaker 1 (40:43):
We still love everybody, all of us on a float
I love that, Still in love and.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
Next up episode again three fifteen. Mama said, knock you out, gladiators,
stick with us. We are in the midst of season
three and as if he didn't think it could get crazier,
this is one of the craziest episodes and it's still
I'm gonna get crazier. So thank you, stay tuned and
listen up. Love you, Jeffy, you do.

Speaker 2 (41:05):
Love you guys very much.
