Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up, everybody, LeVar Arrington here with coach Franklin. Another week,
a big win against Kent State and a big game
against the fighting a line now of Illinois that get
them at home. We'll talk to coach about the offensive production,
the defensive production. We're gonna talk about how the coaches
are performing, all right, We're going to grade out on that.

(00:21):
See what coach feels and thinks about that. And there
are injuries. What's coach's opinions and thoughts on what the
injuries are with the team and how we move forward
as a team.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Stay locked in.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
This is quite Franklin with coach James Franklin and myself
the Hall of Famer. That's right, Penn State Nidney line,
LeVar Arrington. Let's get going. Coaching takeaways from the Kent game.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
First of all, I love the white out energy.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
You got out white out energy. You a white out energy.
We're going white out energy.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Let me say it again, Let me say it again,
white out energy energy. Guy, have to put the dramatic
pause in there.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll be all in on it.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
You know what I mean. I'm part of the energy,
you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
So as you can see, I be up in the
house and I'll be trying to bring that energy to
the energy that's already there. It's been really cool, man,
this first time I ever came back this much.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I've never ever, ever ever come back as much as
I do now.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
So let me just first start by saying, that's a
testament to how you make me feel and how I
feel about you know, what we have going on with
our program where I want to be there and be
supportive of what's going on. So super cool to have
been back as much as possible. And I would encourage

(01:52):
all of our lettermen while I'm talking about it, to
get get back, get involved, be a part of it.
Super dope team. And you're missing out on meeting these
young phenomenal dudes if you're not coming back and getting
an opportunity to learn about Coach Frank and the rest
of the coaching staff. A lot of us are on
the coaching staff. So with that being said, you know,

(02:15):
I wanted to make sure I put that out there,
but Coach, let's talk about it how.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
I was going to say, the same thing, It's been
a blessing to have you back, and I was going
to say the same thing that I encourage all the
lettermen to come back.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
I think it's really cool this.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
Friday and Saturday, we're honoring the nineteen ninety.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Fourteen year, which was a special team.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
I mean, I think it was five guys that are
first round draft choices, a bunch of Hall of famers,
guys had great NFL careers. I mean, you talk about
a seventeen year NFL career. A seventeen year NFL career
is crazy.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
So yeah, it's just a bunch of guys coming back,
So that'll be awesome.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
But to the end, Yeahronkey, John Carter, Freddie Scott, Bobby Mitchell,
Phil your Boa, Cody uh Well, who we got on man.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Kim Herring.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
I mean that that team, Marco Riviera, Rivera, Jeff Harding's
I mean that they were loaded, Vincent Stewart, I mean
those were guys Willie, Willie Anderson there. That that team
was gils eer there. Like when you talk about being
a historian, I've always been a fan of the game first,

(03:34):
so it's always like you focus in and you dial
in on what's special, and I mean that was one
special team that that we had. Much like some of
you know some of the ones you feel that you know.
Sa Kwon just had him a day the other day
and I seen Trace McSorley man Man. My son was

(03:54):
over the moon excited to have had the opportunity to
meet him.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Because Coach Kent, we have a day against Kent.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
You had a lot of new guys, new faces out there,
quite a few actually that made their debuts as even
listed as starters. And you get out there and you
guys show out. When you have a game like this
where it's such a I guess a lopsided victory, sometimes

(04:25):
it's really hard to dial in on what was really
taken away from the game. So I'll ask you, like,
from your perspective, what were the most important takeaways from
from this game that took place against Kent Kent State?

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Most importantly, we played in a way that's going to
allow us to build confidence going into Big ten play.
You know, I don't care who you play. We've been
playing football at Penn State for a long time. And
when you have a school record of toe to offense
and then you have a defense that only gives up

(05:04):
sixty seven yards, I think the last time that that
happened was against Susquehanna and.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Like nineteen twenties, like nineteen twenty nine something like that,
and no wow, and.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
No disrespect to our brothers over at Susquehanna, but but
a little bit different. So we've been we've been playing
football long time at Penn State and played all different
types of teams and competition.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
So whenever you're able to do that, that's cool.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
A lot of faces and guys that are stepping up
for us and need to because we've had some, uh,
you know, a significant amount of injuries and long term injuries.
So have another guys step up and see them, you know,
be able to thrive and play well, allows them to
gain confidence, allows the coaching staff to gain confidence in them,

(05:50):
and then allows us to expand our packages on offense
and defense. So, you know, I thought we played the
way we were supposed to play again that type of opponent,
and we needed to because we got an Illinois team
coming in here after a huge win at Nebraska, and
you know, we're gonna need it a top twenty five matchup,

(06:12):
and we need this place rocking, and that's gonna be
a big part of it as well.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
All right, So and I think that's a perfect way
to transition into the conversation. Luke Luke Altmeyer Old Miss
transfer super talented, but everybody knows that Dart is the
guy at Old Miss and and that's just kind of
some way, some way, somehow, that's how the cookie cookie

(06:38):
crumble for Altmeyer. But dude is a talent and with
this transfer portal he goes to Illinois, he finds a place.
Look good, dil he was dealing put put four touchdowns
up in Nebraska, which is a Nebraska team that's really
starting to find its way. They have a big, a
big backfield, and I mean I think they they're starting back.

(07:02):
I think Brian is sixty six y three something to
that effect. And then the other back, I believe his
name is McCrae or mcquarie, both craig.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Backs.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
That's a big that's a big boy. That's that's Illinois,
as I recall it. That's how Illinois is. They come,
they try to soften you up with the run, They
beat you up with the run, but they give you
a passing game as well, and they were able to
execute well enough against Nebraska in Lincoln to be able

(07:35):
to win. How do you feel do you feel like
with what everything that has taken place, even you mentioning
the injuries and new guys getting in there, this is
going to be a big ten throttle.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
This is going to be this is going to be
a game. How do you.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Feel about the preparation with the games that have been
played so far?

Speaker 2 (07:56):
You feel like you're ready because.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
Maybe people may not be looking at Illinois and taking
them as seriously as they need to take them, but
this is a fine football team and they had personnel
that it's going to give any team problems. How are
you guys approaching this game in particular?

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Well, I think, first of all, they're gonna come in
here with a ton of confidence. They're four to zero
right now. They went to Nebraska, which, as you know,
Nebraska was like the team that everybody was talking about,
and they went on the road and beat a ranked
Nebraska team on the roads. That's gonna give them a
ton of confidence to come into our place on the

(08:35):
road as well. I think the point you brought up
with the quarterback, that's the difference in them right now.
Last year he turned the ball over. He's not turning
the ball over right now. He's got ten touchdown passes
and zero interceptions, the only quarterback in the country that
has done that up to this point. Just so we're clear,
it gets confusing sometimes to me as well.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
He's actually a Mississippi State.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
Mississipp Mississippi State.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Actually, get my eyes, coach, I hadn't already done radio.
I'm so tired, right, so I did have a minute.
It is Mississippi he's a Sipper. You're right, it's Mississippi State.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Or the correct I remember him. He's a highly recruited
kid from that town.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
I actually think his dad was the team doctor at
Mississippi State. Ends up transferring there. Last year he was
a little bit inconsistent, and this year I think he's
the difference in them.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
The way Brett likes to play.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
Brett is a defensive ball control guy who wants to
play great defense. He wants to run the ball and
and obviously he wants to win the turnover ratio battle.
And that's how they're playing right now. And with that,
you're able to, you know, you're able to keep games
close and then and then you gotta be great when
it comes to situational football. And he does a great

(09:53):
job of winning those one score, one possession games, which
is what they did at Nebraska. So he's playing in
a way that allows Brett and Illinois to play at
a high level and be successful.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
And looking at that the way you're you're looking at
you know, the way they're their structured to win. How
do you approach a game like this where you know
it's going to be a grind out? This is this
is ten, this is ten football. You're saying, what, what
does Big ten football look like? It's going to be

(10:26):
what this game looks like. Now, we have history with Illinois.
I don't know if people remember the overtime game with
Illinois we have they.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Can't beat us?

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Like if people are thinking that this this is a
team that they can beat us, how do you how
do you see? I know, on the offensive side of
the ball, I think that's clear. On the defensive side
of the ball, looking at what they're able to do,
how do you see? Are you happy with the way
Drew has played?

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Are you?

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Are you comfortable and confident with the way that we've
established the running game this year? Are you are you
how are you feeling about our receivers? That's always been
the question coming into this year, is the receiving corps
are they going to be good enough? Are they personnel wise?
Are you confident and where we are right now with

(11:18):
the guys that we have and what they're they're able
to do on the offensive side of the ball.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Yeah, I like the direction we're heading.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
And I thought last week, I think it was a
great example that we were able to distribute the ball
to so many different weapons. I've never heard of the
stat eight different offensive players all scoring in one game,
which is which is crazy. So I thought, again, I
think we're heading the right direction, and we're we're able
to run the ball right now, We're able to throw

(11:45):
the ball, We're able to be explosive, We're able to
be efficient. Uh, and we're going to need to do that.
You know, we're going to need to do that not
only against Illinois, but the rest.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Of the season.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
So we've we've shown that we're able to manufacture yards
and points a lot of different ways.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
Now we got to put it all together.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
All right.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
My last, my last question for you is in terms
of grading yourselves as coaches, because this is.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
This is the one that everybody, you know, they may
overlook it.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
They may I don't know, how do you how are
you grading yourself, how you're grading your staff so far
in terms of how you have come into the season.
We talk a lot about about the players and how
they do things, but I know as coaches, I know
for you, just knowing you and how how you operate,
it matters to you. The protocols, the process, the approach.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
That's that's a big thing.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
How how are you grading so far what you've done offensively,
defensively and special teams wise.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Well, I think you have to start by you know,
what are you looking at and what are you basing
it off of. I think the first thing is when
you lose all three coordinators in one year for different reasons,
that creates significant challenges. So how you approach your offseason,
how you approach approach your summer training camp, and then

(13:05):
the season is really important.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
And for the most.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
Part, we've handled that well. You don't watch our team
and feel like in certain areas that we are still
figuring things out.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Now now we are. We're developing team.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Don't get me wrong, but I'm saying we don't have
like a glaring weakness when you watch us where you
feel like it's a new coordinator trying to get things set.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
So I think that's been a real positive.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
And then I think the other thing is we've had
significant injuries, and we're not a team that talks about
injuries a whole lot. So you can't have it both ways.
But when you got one of the best safeties in
all of college football, kJ Winston not on the field
for you right now, and some other guys that are
significant players for us, those things can be excuses and

(13:54):
we're not going to allow them to be excuses. It's
next man up, get them ready, get them developed. Recruited
all these guys for a reason. Obviously it's not ideal,
but I think those those are two really good examples
of a team and a coaching staff that are approaching
things the right way and putting Penn State in the
best position to be successful.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
I appreciate you, coach. Let's have a good one. White
out energy, baby.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
White out white out energy. Yeah, let's go, baby.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
We're gonna say the white out for another game, but
we're gonna bring white out energy this weekend.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
Energy.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Come on, let's do it. Let's turn it into a thing.
White out energy. You know we're gonna turn into a thing.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
I know you we're gonna we're gonna get an energy
drink called white Out Energy.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
We're gonna get an energy company.
