Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Quite Franklin with LeVar Errington.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Each week, Penn State head coach James Franklin and Penn
State legend LeVar Arrington will discuss game strategy and other
insights on Penn State football.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Quite Franklin with LeVar Arrington is time.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
What's up everybody? That's right? It's another exciting addition.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Quite Franklin with my guy, the coach himself, James Franklin.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
I'll be leading you along the way. I'm LeVar Arrington.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
We got some interesting questions to get to, some interesting
conversation between us. I want to start with the most
important of them all, coach. And this is a hard one,
and I know everybody is waiting to hear this one
and wants to know the response to this. But Halloween
just passed yesterday evening. It's a very interesting holiday when
(00:56):
you become an adult versus when you're a kid. Do
you have any fond memories of Halloween when you were
growing up? Any It could be high school, it could
be teen years, could be college years, could be younger years.
I remember plastic Darth Vader outfits that I had to use,
maybe three years in a row. And I remember I
(01:17):
was fast enough to catch one dude that grabbed my bag.
One year, we used to use pillow bags to get candy.
It's kind of funny. But one kid grabbed my bag
and I hacked him down. So maybe I was one
of the times I knew I was supposed to play
defense in school. But you got any fond memories.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Well, we had the Halloween party at the facility. We
always do that on Monday, mainly the coaches and the
wives and all of our children and that kind of
walk around.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
But it makes me think about.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Just how much Halloween has changed, right, I mean, we
grew up like you got your costume, you made your costume,
you bought a cheap costume, whatever it was, and.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
You left the house and you didn't come back, and
your parents really didn't know what you were, and you.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Were hitting up different neighborhoods and everybody knew that the
one house that gave the big candy bars away, or
the one house that was weird that was given toothbrushes away,
or whatever, you'd be out.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
You'd be out forever.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
And now Halloween is almost like playdates, like it's set up.
We're gonna go to the mall and do it or
this certain area. So it's just a very different experience.
I'm not saying better or worse, just just very different.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
But I was the other on Monday, I was run DMC.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
You know I had which one? Did you run? What's
your DMC?
Speaker 4 (02:45):
But that's what I was just gonna say.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
It was somewhat embarrassing because I was dressed up like that.
A Z and his whole family were dressed up like that,
and Marcus Hagen's two sons were dressed up like that.
But they all had like the legit Adidas sweatshuit on
the whole deal. My wife got something like, you know,
(03:07):
off Amazon in a bag.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
And it had it all happened stripes, two stripes, say.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
My Adidas with two stripes two stripes, I'm like, look,
I think I can afford a third stripe, Like yeah, yeah,
that is true. But when you got it, you know
it is what it is. Let's move to the easier questions, coach.
So this week you we we saw we saw some
(03:38):
major upsets take place. We saw Oklahoma number six, number
six go down to an unranked Kansas City, Kansas Jayhawks team.
We saw a number eleven Oregon State team fall to Arizona.
We we saw a North Carolina team that is seventeenth
(04:00):
lose to a Georgia Tech team. Now that is that
is one of those scenarios where it's like, you can't
take an opponent lightly, coach, and those turned out to
be trap games for those teams.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
You guys were.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Coming off of, maybe even a more difficult scenario than
those teams, because you were coming off of a big,
a big game, A lost to a top five ranked team,
and now you have to play against a which I
told people and I warrant them and we even talked
about it, that Indiana team plays inspired football. Their record
(04:44):
is not an indicator of how hard that team plays.
They gave us, they gave us a lot of competition
and we were able to pull through. Just how important
is it to make sure and understand that while some
people look at and they're like, oh, you didn't beat
the number three team, you didn't beat the number three team,
(05:06):
and they're so used to us winning games and winning, winning, winning,
that when we lose a game, even if it's against
a quality opponent, a top ranked opponent, it's like the
end of the world. But we all know you have
to play the games and every game matters. Moving into
the Indiana game, how important was it for you guys
(05:28):
to refocus, repurpose and get into that week and get
into that game and play the way that you guys
played well.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
To your point, we talk about it every Sunday in
our team meeting and I show them examples of people
that did not respect winning and what winning takes. We
talk about that every single week. And to your point,
you know, we go on the road and not just
to the number three team in the country, but we
go on the road and lose to the team that
(05:56):
right now, based off the playoff ranking, is the number
one ranked team in the country, and we had a
we had a chance to win that game.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
You know, all the way down to the wires.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
So so I think the biggest message that that we
try to get across to the staff as well as
the players is every week, Uh, it is difficult to win.
It is challenging to win, to sustain it over an
entire season with injuries and bumps and bruises and scheme challenges,
match up issues, whatever.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
It may be.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
So so not taking that for granted, not taking that
for granted.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
So finding a way to get a win. People may
call it an ugly win. At the end of the season,
they don't mark them that way. You just got to
try to keep stacking them in a positive direction. So
I was pleased with how we battled and how we
were resilient and found a way to get a win.
But obviously we got to learn from it. We got
to learn from, you know, those last two games and
(06:55):
take the next step.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Now coming into this game against Maryland, we saw what
so many people have talked about. Everybody continues to question
you about Drew Aler going deep and deeper balls and
throwing the ball downfield and letting Drew Aler, let him,
let him go or let them set them free, whatever
it may be. What's your what's your what's been your
(07:20):
reaction your take to how Drew is you know you
feel Drew is being used or how you felt he
was used in this Indiana game? Was was the plan
the same? Did it just did that opportunity open itself
up to go deeper?
Speaker 1 (07:33):
What? What was what was your thought process and going
into this game with Drew?
Speaker 4 (07:38):
Yeah, the plan was the same.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
We typically have and call typically between eight and twelve
shots a game where we're literally trying to get the
ball down the field because we think there's an opportunity
based on coverage or play action pass or whatever it
match up, whatever it may be, this game played out
that we were able to take take a few more.
(08:00):
We hit a few, we didn't hit a few, but
it wasn't like this game the plan was any different.
I think it was also some times where he checked
the ball down, which is also what we want to do.
You know, the one the one ball that Drew missed
on the dig to KeAndre over the middle. Those were
(08:22):
two go routes on the outside that they bailed in
coverage and it wasn't.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
There, and he worked through his progression.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
So really the model and the and the plan hadn't
changed this week. But there's gonna be some weeks where
those opportunities to present themselves and there's gonna be other
weeks where they don't.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
I think that's a good way of looking at it.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
You guys go into Maryland, you guys are going into
the stadium that you used to coach on the opposite
sideline to people who are from the area know that
they kind of felt like you would end up being
the head coach there, and people were disappointed when that
didn't happen. But people may not know our Penn State
(09:06):
fan base. People may not know unless they're like people
like me that are close to it from inside being
in Maryland to DMV that there's a strong possibility that
Maryland wants to beat James Franklin more than they want
to beat Penn State. And that's an interesting dynamic when
you go into a game where they want to beat you.
(09:30):
How do you how do you internalize knowing that there's
a connective tissue there that that was where you know,
you learned a lot coach Freesian, super dope coach, some
great times, y'all. Y'all feel there's some really amazing teams
during that time period. How does that impact you going
into a game where you know they're going to bring
(09:51):
their best because they want to show their best against
James Franklin and then hopefully they beat Penn State.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
How do you eternalized that?
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Well, First of all, I got a ton of respect
and appreciation for the University of Maryland.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
I was there for eight years.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Shola, you know, Shola was was a little kid running
around those those hallways. Addison was born uh in Maryland
and again. I was there for five years, left and
went to the Green Bay Packers, and then came back
after being the offensive coordinator at Kansas State again for
another three years and had a great experience London, learned
(10:31):
a ton of ball from Ralph Ragent. Debbie al the
athletic director named me the head coach in waiting, so
I had a great experience. Me and Locks were on
the same staff together for three years. Coach your boy
Ricardo there, so I got I got great memories and histories.
But I do think your point is, you know, obviously
(10:51):
from a geographic perspective, there's a connection between Penn State
and Maryland. I remember being at Maryland trying to recruit
against Penn State and it wasn't easy.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
It was a battle.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
But then on top of that, obviously to your point,
the connections with with me and that university and the
state and specifically the coaches that all those things I
think factor in. There's there's no doubt about it. I
think that's factored in. In the past. I got a
ton of stories that wouldn't be appropriate to tell in
this setting, but I got I got a ton of stories.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Yeah, but uh, but.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
For us, you know, We got a lot of respect
for them. I think it's one of the more talented teams,
UH in the Big Ten. We feel like that every year.
They do a really good job of recruiting talent and
developing talent. So we're gonna have to be prepared. You know,
their quarterback is a problem, Their wide receivers or problems.
They're running backs a problem, Their linebackers are a problem,
(11:51):
you know, So they've done a really good job of
acquiring talent.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
We're gonna be We're gonna need to be ready to play.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
They they have been.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
They've own the ability to be able to be up
on a Ohio State team, but have shown the inconsistent
inconsistencies where they could be down and end up losing
to a team like Northwestern. So it's it's kind of
the inconsistencies of what you see out of this team
have to be a tat bit concerning because you don't
(12:21):
necessarily know exactly what you're going to get going into
the game.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
But I think I think we know though LeVar right.
My point is we're going to get the team that
played Ohio State. You look at Maryland, they have traditionally
played against what people would consider the top teams in
the Big Ten and they've played them, they've played them really,
really well. So we're going to get that team. And
(12:48):
I think that also goes back to our previous discussion
about how hard it is to get your team ready
to play week in and week out at home on
the road, ranked opponent, non ranked opponent, whatever it may be.
That is more challenging than than people realize. And I
think when you've won a decent amount, people start to
(13:10):
take that winning for granted.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
All Right, my last question to you before I let
you go, which this is always always love getting your
insight and your input on on everything. Looking at this game,
going one to know? The playoff, the playoff of ranking
came out and two Big Ten teams are are on
(13:33):
the ranking and one is still on our it's still
on our schedule. We go one to know, want to know,
Want to know our our main theory, our main theme
is to go one to know each week.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
But do you do you.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
In your mind entertain the idea of here's the ranking, here's.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
What we got left.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
How how are you looking at that the ranking comes
out Because there's still a chance for us to be
able to obviously be able to make it into this playoff.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Anything could could play out. Do you entertain that or
is it just one to oh well, I think you know.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
The reality is is we take the same approach every
day and every week and to be one to know
when you do that, those things take care of itself.
But for me to sit here and tell you that
our players and the staff and even myself aren't aware
of those next steps and what's coming.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Everybody's aware. I don't need to say it. Everybody is
aware of what it means.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
But if you're not careful, you spend too much time
on two weeks, three weeks, four weeks from now, then
then we're one of those teams we're talking about that
let this one slip by us. So, you know, we
just want to we just want to attack the task
at hand. But I think to your point, you know,
one of the things that that put Ohio State at
(14:53):
number one is their resume and correct correct And then
there's also teams on that that are ranked extremely high
and that don't that do not have a ranked win,
you know, So I think those things, you know, are interesting,
and that's why we have.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
A ranked loss and and and ranked.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Loss and a ranked winked win.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
Yes, so it's it's interesting.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
So we'll again, let's just handle our business and let's
see how this thing plays out. And by the way,
I love the Stick City shirt you got on man.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
You know it's a place man. I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
You know, I need to see some more sticks, baby,
I need to see more.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
He seems like he's speeding up. He's getting there.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Maybe we're gonna get his best football as as we
get a little bit further in.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
So we'll get we'll get his best football this stretch,
starting this weekend.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
There's no doubt Abdul is gonna have a big game
this week.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
We need him to have a big game this week
and really for the rest of the season, he's gonna
finish on a real high note.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
And the coach has been a pleasure, always a pleasure.
That's Coach Franklin. Make sure you check us out. You
know you can get him every week. He's gonna give
you what he don't give nobody else, which is some
real talk.
Speaker 1 (16:11):

Speaker 3 (16:13):
I asked all the good questions, so you've come here
to get all them good questions. Answer and here what
we got to say. You can check it out quite Franklin.

(16:34):

Speaker 1 (16:35):
And yeah, you did have a six to the is
the place? All right? We'll talk to y'all later. Appreciate
your coach,
