DisruptU PSU Presents The Penn State Pulse With Dylan Dawson, Penn State beat Bowling Green in a closer game than expected. Tyler Warren had a standout performance, setting a record for receiving yards by a Penn State tight end. The Penn State run game improved, with Singleton and K-Tron both going over 100 yards. Drew Aller continued to show improvement, despite some near misses on deep passes. Penn State overcame adversity and responded well on both sides of the ball. Areas for improvement include the defensive line getting more pressure, the wide receiver room needing more contributors, and the offensive line's pass protection.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome back into the Penn State Pulse. I'm your host,
Dylan Dawson. Penn State did beat Bowling Green Saturday, but
it was not the type of game that most people
expected at all. Defense, in particular for Penn State looked
rough in the first half, and the offense slowed down
and struggled a lot in the second half. Outside of
a few explosive plays. The game went thirty four to

(00:26):
twenty seven final, and if you were unable to watch,
PSU was actually down by four at the break. So
let's jump into this thing with some positive things that
stood out to me. First up, as Tyler Warren. He
went off on Saturday. He actually set the record for
receiving yards in a single game by a Penn State
tight end. He caught eight balls for one hundred and
forty six yards and that comes out to eighteen point

(00:49):
three yards per catch. That is explosive, especially for a
tight end. With the wide receivers kind of struggling with
consistencies so far in the season. Tyler Warren being there
as a safety blanket for Drew is so so big
for this passing offense this season. So slick for Tyler
Warren to keep making plays, keep being consistent. That'll go
a long way this year. Next up, Sanders sa Haydak.

(01:11):
He had a bounce back game. He missed that first
field goal the season against West Virginia, but was able
to go two for two on Saturday against Bowling Green,
hitting comfortably from both forty three and twenty eight yards out.
He was able to earn a shout out from James
Franklin in coaches postgame opening statement, and I'm sure that
performance was a huge confidence booster moving forward for Sander.

(01:32):
Hopefully we see a Sam Ficken like turnaround for sa Haydak.
I don't think the start that he got off to
was quite as bad as facing, but yeah, hopefully he
can parlay this into a really solaid season.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Next up. I really liked what I saw from the
Penn State run game.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
I said after the West Virginia game, I wanted to
see them block better, especially on the interior, and I
think they did.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
The run game looked very good for Penn State.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
It was certainly one of the few areas we actually
saw improvement from game one to game two. Nick Singleton
ran thirteen times for one hundred and nineteen yards in
a touchdown and k Tron went fourteen for one hundred
and one yards. You guys can correct me if I'm wrong,
but I believe that was just the second game that
both Allen and Singleton each went over one hundred yards,

(02:18):
with the first being Michigan State last year. Again, correct
me if I'm wrong, but I did my brief research
on that. I'm pretty sure that is just the second one.
But those boys had room to run between the tackles,
and they each broke a handful of explosive runs as well.
It was a very promising day for PSU's run game,
and then next Drew Aller continues to ascend. The stats

(02:39):
may not have reflected it, but Drew Aller once again
showed us that he's taking a step up from last
season to this one. Outside of that, excuse me, outside
of that interception on a miscommunication with Trey Wallace, Drew
was on point all day long.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
He was actually under a.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Good bit of pressure at different points in the game,
but he stayed calm, maneuvered in the pocket, and delivered
good balls downfield. His deep balls were accurate, but a
lot of those players have just been a hair off,
just one little thing goes wrong, like the Amari Evans
pass interference. I guess you could have called it PI,
but it was kind of sketchy, or the deep one
to trade in the second half where it was a

(03:16):
perfect ball, but he could have pushed that ball a
little further left to sustain the separation from the dB
kind of lead tray toward the sideline.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
He probably could have called it in stride for a touchdown.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
It was on the money regardless, but little things like
that leading someone away from the defender that can be
the difference between a long catch or a breakup in
that situation and maybe a touchdown. It does appear like
drewis putting it together, though, and I am personally very
excited to see where he's at by the.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
End of the season.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
And then finally MAC team or not, adversity was overcome.
I know it was bowling green, but adversity is adversity.
This is D one college football, regardless of the opponent.
It's not easy to do in college for you guys
saw it all over the country this past weekend. Number
five Notre Dame lost at home to Northern Illinois. Oregon
struggled with Boise State, Oklahoma struggled with Houston. Alabama was

(04:11):
beating USF by five with like six and a half
minutes left in the game. That was before they went
nuclear and scored twenty one points in like three minutes,
and then LSU struggled with Nickels State. So it was
all over the country people were struggling. I'm not saying
that's an excuse Penn State played poorly, but it happens,
especially early in the season, regardless of opponent. This Penn
State team faced real adversity and they responded on both

(04:33):
sides of the ball, which is very encouraging to see.
It's what you want to see early on in the
season when faced with adversity. So this game overall will
bring this team closer together and they should learn a
ton from it.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
E's up.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Next up, I want to discuss some areas for improvement.
They've now won two games, they have two games under
their belt and they will head into their first bye week.
So first up, the defensive line getting home. I asked
for you, guys. I asked you guys for your opinion.
Excuse me on this one. Still on the fence about it,
whether it's a real problem yet or not. Penn State

(06:30):
has two sacks total through their first two games. Both
of those sacks came against West Virginia and they did
not have any against Bowling Green. I think I'm leaning
toward this not being as big of a problem as
the stat indicates, but it is certainly something to keep
an eye on. When you look at the game plan
for both the Penn State's opponents, it was to clearly
get the ball out as soon as possible, especially Bowling Green,

(06:53):
as they averaged like two and a half seconds between
the snap and the throw on Saturday. If teams want
to keep the quick pass method against this Penn State defense,
they will adjust now that it's happened multiple times. After
that point, those defensive ends will have more time to
get home, and they're just gonna need.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
To be able to do that.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
They need to get to the quarterback if they're gonna
have a little more time to do so. If you
end up letting a guy like Miller Moss or maybe
Will Howard sit in the pocket and just dissect your secondary,
those will be some very very long games for Penn State.
Next up is the Penn State wide receivers you guys
probably saw it coming, was hoping I wouldn't be talking

(07:32):
about it still, but here we are. The wide receiver
room is still a concern. Through two weeks of football.
You pretty much have two guys that have flashed so
far in Trey Wallace and then Amari Evans, but nothing
at all behind them. Julian Fleming has one catch for
three yards through two games. No catches for anyone else
outside of those three guys, so that wide receiver room

(07:53):
has now combined for ten total catches through two games.
That is a problem, and they absolutely need a third
and preferably a fourth and fifth guy to step up
in ever. The next thing I want to discuss is
pass pro. The offensive line progressed a bit as far
as pass pro from Week one to Week two.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
They didn't give a.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Ton of sacks up to Bowling Green, just two, but
there was a good bit of pressure on Drew Aler, who.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Was able to escape a lot of it.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
The Falcons, like I said, did get home for two sacks.
I don't think it's a big issue and it's something
that they can absolutely patch up as the season progresses.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
I thought it was a.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Pretty rough game from Drew Shelton that left tackle in particular,
he struggled on a lot of his pass pro reps.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
I saw him put in Nolan Rucci.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
He got a lot of reps at left tackle, which
caught my eye considering he was training on the right
side for the majority of the offseason. So maybe Rouchie
could push Shelton for that position. Donco seems to have
right tackle lockdown. He's gonna be very good for Penn State.
So maybe Phil trout one as a new starting five
come conference play with Rouccie over shehell, we'll have to

(09:00):
keep an eye on that one. So that's gonna do
it for today's episode. Thank you guys so much for
tuning in, and State will now head into their first
bye week of two as they look to mend a
few minor injuries guys like kJ Winston a little banged up,
and then clean up on some of those issues. So
I'm your host still and Dawson signing off. H
