Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome back into the Penn State Pulse. I'm your host
still in Dawson. Penn State got the job done in
the white Out last Saturday, dominating Washington in a thirty
five to six win. Penn State's offense in particular, was
dialed in that first half, as they turned four possessions
into four touchdowns. PSU went into the half up twenty
(00:27):
eighth to nothing and sort of just worked some younger guys,
some inexperienced guys in in that second half, slowed down
the game a bit. PSU outgained Washington on the total
game four hundred and eighty six yards to one hundred
and ninety three. This was just pure domination from the
get go, and it was very encouraging to see as
a response from this team as a whole. So let's
(00:50):
jump into the first segment, which is who and what
stood out to me in a positive manner. Penn State's
O line. They simply bullied Washington for sixty men on
Saturday in both run blocking and in pass pro. They
did not allow a single sack or tackle for loss.
I couldn't tell you the last time that that happen
for PSU, especially in a conference game. Washington has some
(01:13):
big boys up front along both lines. That's very impressive
to do just to begin with, but against a team
like that with talent like that, very encouraging to see.
The NADI Lions also got the run game going again,
as they went for two hundred and sixty six yards
and four touchdowns on the ground at six point seven
yards a clip. This Penn State o line appeared to
(01:35):
have hit another gear on Saturday, which would be enormous
to continue that momentum into the playoff, assuming they can
get there. Of course. Next up white Out, Warren struck again,
and he's now scored at least one touchdown in every
white out that he's played in. Tyler Warren caught eight
balls for seventy five yards. He also ran for two touchdowns.
(01:56):
I was calling for Tyler to get more touches after
the Ohio State game, and that's exactly what happened. I
did say that it was doubtful that trend would continue
of him lacking touches, so I'm glad to see that
they were able to redirect that ship in a positive manner.
Annie kol Nicky looked Warren's way, especially when PSG was
(02:17):
down around the goal line, which is what we all
wanted to see Against Ohio State. Both of his rushing
touchdowns came on third and goal situations. Next, I really
liked what I saw from Trey Wallace against the Huskies.
He caught five balls for eight team high eighty four yards.
That comes out to almost seventeen yards per catch, which
is pretty explosive. Wallace has been fairly quiet since his
(02:39):
big game against WVU to open the season. We've talked
about that before on this podcast, and last Saturday was
his most yards in a game since that opener. I
still believe that if anyone is going to step up
as a true wide receiver one on this team, it's
Trey Wallace. There could still be some very big games
on the horizon for the Nitty Lions this season, and
the president of a true wide receiver one of those
(03:01):
games would obviously go a long long way. There's Tyler
Warren in the past game, Nick Singleton gets involved quite
a bit, and then it's Trey Wallace, Liam Clifford, Julia Fleming.
Those guys just need to step it up another level
if they're gonna win some big games. Like everyone's talking about.
Next up of course, I have to mention Abduke Carter.
(03:24):
I've already covered his performance at length, so I will
keep this pretty short. But man, he is a special player.
Six tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and a
forced fumble against Washington was the stat line for mister Carter.
He's been great at d end all season, but he
wasn't quite getting home in the first handful of Penn
State's games. Now he is, and it's showing up on
(03:48):
the stat sheet. In Penn State's last two games now,
which we're against Ohio State in Washington, Carter has combined
for six tackles for loss for sacks. He is currently
leading all Power four defensive linemen in tackles for loss
on the season with fifteen and a half, and then
he has eight sacks to go with that, which I
believe is right on the fringe of the top ten
(04:09):
in the FBS. Correct me if I'm wrong on that.
I think he's like eleventh. But at Duke Carter, he
is coming into form, So watch out next. Safety Jalen
Reid has been playing out of his mind recently. He
should honestly be in more conversations regarding things like all
American selections and being a Day one or two pick
in the NFL draft. Lee excuse me. Reid led the
(04:32):
team in tackles last Saturday with seven and he also
grabbed his third interception in PSC's last four games, so
he has really turned it on recently. I can't imagine
what that stat line would look like if he was
able to play down in the box more in that
lion position, But with kJ Winston taking an early exit
on the season due to injury, Jayllen Reid has stepped
(04:55):
up in a big way back there. Finally, for this segment,
I want to mention the third and fourth down efficiency.
Penn State was elite in converting on both third and
fourth downs against the Huskies. They converted ten to thirteen
third down attempts and they went one for one on
fourth down. PSU also held Washington to four to thirteen
(05:17):
on their third down attempts, and their defense was able
to generate a turnover on downs through a fourth down stop.
Those players are always huge in determining a game's outcome,
and the stats here tell the story of how this
one played out. All right, let's move into the second segment,
which is areas for improvement there. Genuinely isn't much at
(05:39):
all in a negative manner to take away from this game,
but there's always something if you look long and hard enough.
So first up, this is becoming an injury riddled team.
This team has a lot of injuries, but the good
news is that most of them aren't long term, but
there are quite a few guys with some bumps and bruises.
As Franklin likes to say, Singleton is the main one
(06:01):
that comes to mind and the main one to keep
an eye on. They may actually sit him this weekend
against Purdue and let him get as close to one
hundred percent as possible, so that'll be something to keep
an eye on throughout the week. Another note is that
the penalties are spiking a bit once again for this team.
They had five penalties for fifty four yards against Washington,
(06:23):
parlay that with five penalties for forty five yards against
Ohio State a week prior, and this team is trending
a little bit in the wrong direction in that penalty area.
It's not like they're committing eighteen nineteen penalties per game,
but it is definitely something to watch right short episode
today that is going to do it for today's episode
(06:43):
of The Penn State Pause. Thank you guys so much
for tuning in.
