you know, hey, trade duce, you know what's happening to
trade dues? But I know what's happening, man. I mean
I was going to say, like, can we make an
official announcement on the We Are podcast? But I've been
(00:53):
looking at social media and the announcement's already out there, man,
So please enlighten all Nitney nation. What's going on in
your life right now?
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Is a time? Is it time for me to spill
the beans?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I think it's time for me to Its time?
Speaker 3 (01:05):
All right, Well, I'm thinking a couple of podcasts in
the past, I've eluded that me and my wife were
expecting the child. Well on Saturday morning, a couple hours
before the Ructors game, Luscia Grace was brought to this world.
Our daughter was born. So ever since Saturday, man, it's
(01:27):
been it's been a blessing, been a great weekend. Been
a roller coaster team. No sleep and you know, especially
in the hospitals, man, where they come in every two minutes.
Really they got to check on your wife or checking
the baby. You really can't get no quality of rest
time in. But it's a beautiful thing. She's an angel, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
No doubt about it. I actually, I mean I saw
the picture where she was laying there next to the
you know, near the window. I mean, what hospital were
you at? Were you back on the beach side? I mean,
what else going on? That's that's Flossie right there.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
I'll tell you, man, this has got to be the
nicest hospital in the history of hospitals in the world.
It's actually a Mercy hospital. Uh down there by Coconut Grove.
A friend of ours is the OBG I in there.
So actually my niece and my nephew was born there.
And when my niece was born, I walked in there
like we spokes man, what is this? I have never
(02:19):
seen a hospital underwater overlooking the whole entire you know,
basically south of Miami and the Key and all that.
So obviously, uh, that's where our kJ was born and
then our daughter too. But yeah, that that photo was
crazy because obviously get the sunset and everything, so it
was just picturesque. It was like, that's credit to my
wife Sarah. No, she she didn't want to beade that photo.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Yeah, yeah, I understand that your beautiful wife Sarah, as
you mentioned there, and you and my nephew kJ are
doing well man, and I cannot wait to spoil great
Carter when I get a chance to cuddle her. Man.
So good stuff, man, congratulations brother, that's the Italian.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
That's the time. She's her grandma there is from from
from Italy. Lucia is that's Italian. That's her grandma's maiden name.
So it was a beautiful thing.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
That's beautiful. See that's the thing about it too, when
you go to names, man, names, like you know, names
can make or break a kid early in life. Man, Lucia,
that's that's destined for something special right there. Like I mean, seriously,
that's that's something special right there already. So good job
with that one man. I don't know about that Kajana
and stuff though, but you know that's not that's not
(03:30):
your name, Kenneth. But anyhow, it's like oldest man. You
know you got you had you had ammo to come
back with my oldest but you didn't. But the opportunity, Hey,
keep keep let it go then no doubt about it. Man.
Please everybody please check out the Happy Value United website
(03:52):
as we continue on making a trying to make some
some fun content with you guys. Man, we've been enjoying
it all season as we have into the last football
game because it's Penn State. John and I we talked
Penn State all day every day, so we love this platform.
So let's jump into it. Key, you talked about a
little bit you know. Uh, Miss Lucia was born right
(04:13):
before the game kicked off. Last home game this past
weekend at Penn State. They beat Rutgers twenty seven to
six on Senior Day. Yeah, you know, hard fight win
against a gritty Greg Ciano team. We knew it was
gonna be that way. I wouldn't expect anything anything less
from Greg. He's one of my favorite coaches that ever.
Grace the Penn State campus. So I was happy about that.
(04:35):
So let's talk about senior day. Wave ntkey, you can't
talk about senior day, that's right. You you left early
for the NFL, so you know some of us needed
four to five years. I mean, you didn't get a
senior day.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
I want to say, you go ahead and you talk
about it. Go ahead, man, I wasn't gonna say anything.
You did, you know. Le's like, I mean, I'll speak
of for me because, like I said, I didn't have
a senior day. You know, that's like kind of I
think as a player, you know, that last game is
kind of like the culmination. Is no end of a
(05:07):
great year, a great season, but then obviously it's gone
after that.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
You know.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
It's obviously in high school we knew we're gonna go
to college, but when you're in college sometimes that's it.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
You know.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Some don't have the opportunities, like yourselves or or myself
to go to the next level play in the NFL,
so really football, this is it for them, and it's
kind of a reflection time. Again, I don't know what
that feeling is like being on the senior day, but
I'm sure there's a lot of emotions that go go on,
(05:36):
and probably in that probably five ten seconds you have
run on the field. I'm sure your college experience kind
of flashes before you and you're just like, man, I
can't believe them here, But I'm gonna let you speak
because I could tell well before.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
You let me speak. Yeah, yeah, before you let me speak, though,
I mean, honestly, you knew that was your last game
to the last home game you played. You knew you.
I mean, hell man, it was a no brainer you
were coming out, So you knew that was your last
damn home game. Don't give me that.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yeah it is, I don't know. I mean, obviously, there
was a lot of buzz going on to that. Earlier
in that season, we were starting to be successful, and
they were talking because the two new expansion teams. That
tells you your age with Carolina and Jacksonville. So there's
a lot of a lot of buzz going on. And
I think for me, like the buzz really started happening
(06:27):
at the Indiana game, after you beat the highest state.
I think the Jaguars scouts were there and the Panthers
and somebody else.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
So that's where they had no chance unless they moved
up to number one. Yeah, they had number one that Yeah,
they had no chance. No.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
I think that was the first kind of inclination that
I might have the ability to leave early because I
don't know if you've seen that photo, there's a photo
that has me sitting on the bench and then Joe
is talking to me like this on the sidelines. Well,
and in the end, I I busted for the eighty
yard touchdown and then they took us out after the
game after that play because we were beating in by
(07:06):
like twenty one I think, and Joe basically came and said, hey,
just let you know, there's a lot of buzz going on.
There's a lot of people out here, there's a lot
of scots. Theres gonna be a lot of people talking
to you. But just he was like this, so basically,
just stick to your game plan, stick to the game plan,
and good things are going to happen for you. That's
what he was telling me. And then the game they're like, okay, coach,
you know whatever, you know you're I'm not thinking like
(07:28):
you're saying, being like the first pick or go in
the NFL. But I just thought it was pretty cool
that you know, you're hearing scouts coming and you know, buzzing,
but I didn't really it didn't really sink into me,
and it probably didn't really honestly, really didn't sink into me.
Probably the Michigan State game, which is the last game,
because obviously we beat in Illinois and we beat Northwestern,
(07:49):
and then I think when the all all the All
American teams are starting to come out and things like that,
then again, we didn't have all these media outlets like
that they do now. Then the US are going like
who's a top five or top ten pick, and you know,
they kind of started throwing my name in there. I'm like, oh,
I'm sure you're talking about the right person. Sure, But
(08:12):
for me, I just kind of try to try to
block that out much as I could and kind of
focus on because we're obviously we're runner feed and we
want a chance to win the title. So I had
all my focus on there. But at that Mischigan State game,
that's where all the all the buzz, you know, traveling
as you know, going to different Ald American teams and
you have a lot of time when you're alone, and
(08:34):
then that's where I think it kind of really hit me,
because I know I did have a good game against
Mission State, and I didn't I didn't think at the time,
I said, Dan, that could be my last time playing
in there.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah. Yeah, was that on the road key? Or is
that at home? No?
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Stay the home? Yeah it was. It was good and
believe it or not, and I want to hear about
your story. But you know, that was like the most
carriers I've ever had of Penn State, the most yards
ever had of Penn State, and one of the best
averages and say animal such outs all my last game.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
So it was like it featured you.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
I had all those yards touchdowns, was like it was
a fit moment. And my great grandmother rest in peace,
was able to come to that game. That was like
the really only game she ever came to. So it
was like that, I guess in the sense that I did. Yeah,
for sure, it wasn't during that game. I wasn't thinking
like that this is my last one. You know some
people now guys are like I'm going to leap before
(09:27):
the season. That wasn't my mindset at all.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Just love about Joe, Yeah, well yeah, what I did
love about Joe was he he's always conscious of guys
and what their draft status could be. And whether he
wants guys to come back. And I think you also,
you told me what you told me that he told
you that because Johnny, you've already done enough for university,
go ahead and you know, and move on to the
(09:50):
rest of your career. And that's that's commendable because he
could have been greedy and say, yo, come back, help
us win the national championship. You know, even though you
guys were undefeated that year, you got another shot at
with you in the backfield for sure, to give us
another shot at it. So but yeah, that's good stuff, man,
that's good stuff. So my last game, my last home
game on senior Day was at home versus Pitt.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
We had a lot of stories on this one. We
got a lot of stores on this.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
We beat Pit fifty seven to thirteen, winning the state
of course, as we always want to do. And that
was a lot of fun. It's crazy, as you know,
I know what you're talking about here because me in
my roommate at the time, Brian O'Neill. Brian, I think
I think Bo had four touchdowns that game, and I was, uh,
(10:37):
I was dealing with an offensive coordinator that did want
to throw me the damn ball Key and Frank Ganner.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Who happened to.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Yeah about it. I'm going to talk about that a
little bit later, trust me on that one. Uh and uh,
I got, you know, Mark player of the game. So
I got the player of the game. And and bo
who have I think we said four touchdowns? Did not
and it was We've been talking come about it for
the last thirty years. So but anyhow, though, man, that's
not that's not here nor there. I remember that day though,
(11:05):
like I just knew last time I was going to
walk out there on that field. And these seniors this year, Key,
this last season, these twenty five seniors, they played in
front of average, an average of one hundred and eight thousand,
four hundred and nine fans at home. Look at that
four oh nine though, imagine that for nine. You know
how special four o nine is when it comes to
(11:26):
the great, the great Joe Paterno. But the play in
front of almost one hundred and nine thousand every single game, man,
these that's that's special. That's why you go to Penn State.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Right, absolutely, I mean that's I mean, I used just
shaking my head. It's like I say, I mean, I think, well,
when we were there, at first was like eighty five,
and then I think my last year was like to
ninety five or ninety two or ninety five, right, And
obviously it's just just a testament to the program, to
the fans obviously supporting our program. Thanks to all of
(11:59):
them out there, and hear that. You know, a lot
of times I just try to tell these kids. I
remember when we went to the Rose Bowl back when
say Kuwan was playing. I forget exactly what year that was.
I went because Frankly asked me to come talk to
the kids at one of the meetings at the hotel,
and I had all the seniors kind of stand up,
(12:19):
and I told them thank you for staying with the program,
because that's what kind of like the transition. They had
a chance even if they really wanted to. But at
the same time, I told these kids, I said, are
you stayed up? And I told all the freshmen standing,
I said, a freshman, one day, you're going to be
just like these guys. This is their last time. They're
going to be suiting up all together, lasing it up,
playing for this school. And you never want to go
(12:41):
back and say, man, I wish I wouldn't, because time's
going to go past you and you're never gonna be
able to get this back. So that's just kind of
like one of those things where you're just saying, like
and one hundred nine thousands of blessing and you kind
of as hard to tell these kids, you know, when
you're in the moment, absorb all of it as much
as you can, because obviously you're focused on a lot
of different things. But man, I couldn't even I couldn't
(13:02):
even imagine what that what that feels like. That's that's awesome.
And thank you to the fans out there for supporting
the program like you're doing.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Yeah, no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Man.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Man, I was there for three games, and I think
the three games I was there, we average uh one
ten eight something, you know, the three games I was there.
So that was it was It was nice. It was
really nice to see everybody out there supporting the team.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
You're talking the question, so how did you feel though
when you walked out? Was it like when you're walking
out No, no, you walk out with gg no rest
in peace?
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
No thing? I mean, what was the feeling like, like,
you know, going from the tunnel. I mean, are you
kind of like folcusing more in the game, you know, all.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
You I'm gonna tell you, yeah, I was. I was
really focused on the game. But one thing that really
stood out to me was, and we've talked about this before,
one of my absolute favorite coaches was Tom Scrap Brad Bradley,
and Scrap came up to me before the game and
gave me a letter. I have it somewhere, you know,
within some of my memorabilious stuff. Uh just you know,
(14:07):
talking about you know, how much he appreciated me, how
much you know, he how much he loved me, you know,
and Scrap, you know he grew a card key. It was.
It was pretty It was touching, man, and I knew that,
you know, that's when it really starts to hit when
you're getting there. You know, I'm trying to stay focused
for the game. But then you've got a guy like
scrap Man who's been had been at Penn State for
(14:29):
you know, a couple of decades, played at Penn State
and just was one of the great coaches that was there.
You know. It was it was special to me, and
I realized how special I was to him at that point.
Even though I knew we had a great relationship. Man.
So that's when I knew, no matter what, I wanted
to go out there and ball out and go out,
you know, go out on a high note. And sure enough, man, hell,
(14:52):
he was trying to run the ball. I was looking
at the stats. I mean, was running damn ball. Franny scored, Damn.
I'm out. I'm out there cooking kids. But when he
gets down to cunch time, they don't want to give
me the rock. So yeah, I had to talk to
the coordinate. That's It's probably the last conversation Franny and
I had. You know, we had the Bowl game chat
obviously right after that versus Stafford when we got beat down,
(15:14):
throwing the ball to me again, But it's not that's
not even here. No, we're talking about these current kids,
you know, and even though we had a blast, man,
it was great. So let's talk about the game, man.
Just talk about the Rutgers game a little bit. To Johnna,
how'd you feel I kind of got an idea what
you're going to say here? How did you feel about
the offense, you know, in the first game without your.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
You know, well, real quick talk about the senior day.
Look at their records, pretty impressive as a senior class.
I mean loss of that. I think they probably the average, like, well,
two losses a year. I think they probably don't like
if you're a four your senior.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Right, they had a lot of ten to two seasons, man,
ten eleven eleven win They had a lot of double
digit wins in their career.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Sure, so shout out to them. But I'll get back
to Rutgers. I mean, you know what I want to say.
You know, this week is tough. You don't know. No, obviously,
the last few weeks, you know, w dis pleasure of
the play calling from our office, the coordinator who was
no longer there. This week looked like some of the
(16:15):
players were there. But unfortunately fifteen was on his game.
He didn't he didn't have he didn't have a good
game this week. And sometimes it's going to happen. But
we're gonna throw for seventy yards, that's all. So I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Thirteen attempts though, key thirteen thirteen attempts too. Now you
gotta also look at now Jaywan, who we love. Jay
Wan was OC for the game. He fed his running
backs over and over again. No, right, I mean, look,
the run game was there. You gotta throw the ball
sometimes oc new oc oc intern right.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Well, well obviously from a coming from a receiver. Yeah,
that's what you that's what you're going to say, and
that's what you do. That's right what offensive side and
a scheme. And I'm not just saying it because I'm
running back and defending Jawon. But just like Michigan a
couple of weeks ago, in the second half, never threw
a ball. I mean basically running as you do, running
(17:13):
the ball sets a mindset, it sets an attitude for
the team. So if we're saying we're gonna run down
your throat, a quarterback unfortunately wasn't having his best game,
so you know what, take it out of his hands,
and they just try to manage the clock and just
you know, wear down the wheel of the opponent. And
I just think that's what we did. Like I said,
(17:36):
I know Drew got hurt in the third quarter, but
it just seemed like mentally connection with the I don't
know what it was. But at the same time, like
you know, we can't try to go there and help
him gain his confidence because they say, you know, we
could be behind eight ball, and so we run the
ball and doing it effectively with no different schemes, and
I think that's what we did. Now Obviously, him being
(17:58):
a running back coach is going to look like, oh,
he's just trying to feature his guys.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Yeah, I've been giving a hard time. I didn't mean
it like that.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Say other people went or just our passing game was
not oning there and say, you know what, We're not
gonna try maybe like we did in the past some
other games where you know, we had a high pass
attempt but we couldn't complete the ball and we're gonna
just throw it no matter what. Try to do some
different schemes, formation blocking, blocking schemes and things like that
to make the running game successful. And the average wasn't sexy,
(18:30):
but it was high attempts and a lot of rushing
yards and a lot of different people touching the ball,
so it was able to spread the wealth.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Yeah, yeah, we we we. You know, you talked about
Drew struggles, which was obvious out there, and then he
gets hurting the third and then Bopaula comes in and
replaces Drew and at least a team in rushing eight
carries for seventy one yards and the TV but he
batter threw the ball. I mean, obviously we didn't need
to throw it too much, but I mean he showed
some signs that if we do have to if Drew
(19:01):
does go down or we have to have a backup quarterback,
and that Bo's actually gonna be able to go out
there and hold it down for us for a little
bit until Drew is back.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Yeah, I agree. I mean, I think the good thing
even though, like I've been harping our offense all year,
like we haven't had no continuity, but we've been scoring
a lot of points and having large leads in the
fourth quarter, and Bow has been able to get a
lot of game time experience throughout the whole season. So
(19:29):
when he got his number called in against in the
third quarter against Rutgers, it wasn't something that was new
to him, and he really hasn't been out there, so
I think that has been good for him. And like
you said, he just looks like he's kind of natural
out there and going out there and performing. But I'm
gonna be honest with you, hope they don't have him
(19:50):
as a one trick pony, because if he does play again,
people say, well, he can't throw the ball. He's only
a running quarterback, So then what are they going to do?
Pack it in and try to get him throw. So
I just hope no, sooner or later we can do
it and highlight his throwing ability. But I think I
forget what game it was, but he had a couple
of nice little touchdown passes earlier.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Yeah, the one, remember the one that everybody's mad about him.
Threw that touchdown the pots yeahs out of the backfield
down the scene. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, a cover touchdown.
They called it the one that.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Covered, yeah, cover the spread. You know that was good.
Like I said, man, it's always good to have a
back of quarterback to who gets some as some experience.
So it wasn't like a true freshman going in there
like I never played yet, because starting quarterback has been
playing the whole season. So you can tell the guys
a couple around him, and he did did the best.
(20:40):
Let his feet through the talking.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Yeah, he's nice with it. He really is nice. And
he runs tough again, kind of the same thing to John,
You've talked about it a lot. This year. Defense stepped
up again. I mean they have not allowed they have
not allowed Rutgers to score a touchdown at Beaver State
since they've joined the Big Ten. Bro that's no touches,
(21:04):
I say, I said, no touchdowns. They said Rutgers.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
I mean Rutgers came in a Big Ten win. How
many years ago, probably.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
I'm not sure it was a while ago, long enough ago, long.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
Enough, and he has scored a single touchdown.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
I've never heard a Beaver stadium. That's crazy, Tom, You're
not coming here. No touchdowns?
Speaker 3 (21:26):
I think obviously you know we'll have a recap of
the season. But again, you know, we kind of route
rode the coachels of our defense, you know, making plays,
no creating the the field position, and you know they
posed their will on to the quarterback and they know
obviously they had a couple of field goals, but man,
(21:47):
they were getting after it, and uh, Rutgers try to
at the beginning you feel they are going to do
no obviously getting embarrassed by eye of the week before.
But our defense did that mortal combat finished and took their.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
How about how about Iowa? We beat Iowa thirty one? Donut.
Now they're gonna be playing for probably the Big Ten championship.
Key that was that was a wake up call. We
gave Iowa. Huh.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
I mean yeah, but they also beat they beat uh
with the team last week fifteen to twelve. So what
did I tell you they're kicking five field goals.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
I'm just saying they're winning. Their defense is playing outstanding.
That's part of what they're doing right.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
There, right, Yeah, yeah, I agree, no.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Matter what the key you know what? Yeah, No, I
thought you about to say you agree, No, I agree
with you.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
But I just said, it's just when we were talking
about it last week, you know about the realignment of
the Big ten, it's just like, you know, all the
power teams, the Big three were on the one side.
It's like, you know, you look over there, like man,
if just one of the other schools were over there.
It's just, you know, I'll say, be faced each other
because it seems like on that side, no to respects
to the other teams. But it's not as even closest
(22:59):
being tough with the East side.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
Yeah, but they know it isn't everybody knows that. I mean,
do you want to can see that? Do you want
to see that? Anyhow? INSTATEE actually is up there outscoring
their opponents thing Kajana to one hundred to three in
the third quarter, which we chronicle a little bit the
last couple of weeks that you come out of halftime.
You yeah, for the whole season, it's one hundred to three.
(23:25):
We've given up in the third quarter. And that's a
testament to that defense. As we talked about, held Rutgers
of two hundred and twenty nine yards one to thirty
past ninety nine rushing and they are as advertised. And
we'll talk a little bit more about that later because
we're going to talk about their head man on the
defensive side, and a little bit before we do that, though,
let's let's talk about this this season. Any game here,
(23:46):
regular season closes out the regular season at Michigan State
or actually at Detroit in Detroit at you know, Ford Field,
the home of the Detroit Lions. Oh, that would be
a lot of fun for those guys. Yeah, you had
to Ford Field. Everybody a few touchdowns. And Franklin says
that he expects Drew Aller to be ready to go, man,
(24:07):
So how much fun would that be? A key to
be able to you know, nactually go into you know,
I get it, East Landsy's nice for college's atmosphere, but
be able to go and playing Ford Field with the
pros play. That's gotta be nice for the guy indoors.
It's got, you know, great atmosphere. It should be ideal
for these guys.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
Absolutely, I mean it will be flying around. I didn't know.
I didn't I didn't know we're playing at the home
of Allions. But like you were saying, it's just kind
of like, obviously I never had the opportunity, but you
playing the state championship game and you played at Ohio Stadium,
right if I'm not mistaken it, you know, I'm saying.
So that's like, as a kid, that's always a dream
that not all these kids had an opportunity to say,
(24:44):
you know what, I played on the on the big
boy field. And I think that's the same thing for
these college kids saying some will never have this feeling
again or opportunity, but others say, you know what, oh man,
I need to I need to get here. Use that
a little bit of motivation. So it's always cool, especially
lots are doing good. You want to see where's Jared Coslocker.
(25:05):
You know, where's this person, this person, this person, So
it'd be good. But that I love because weather, we
get the don't oh, Man, East Lance against nasty up there.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
Uh So it's.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Oh, it's gonna it's gonna be fun. But that's a
smart move by Mission State, no direspect to their program,
but having it at a major city. So now obviously
get a lot of people from you know, from Penn
State fans flying to Detroit, stay right there and don't
have to work, Yeah, track and get up to their campus.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
There's gonna be a lot of Penn State there. I
guarantee there's gonna be a lot of Penn State there
because of that. They've been waiting for something like that,
you know. I mean, you get these opportunities, and our
Penn State fans always show up anyways, but you get
an opportunity to go in Detroit. You're indoors, great atmosphere
like you talked about, but the environment's gonna be perfect. Hell,
I'm which I could have gone up there if the
Dolphins didn't play in the same day, I might be
(26:00):
at in Detroit for that game. Cana.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
You known, you know, like eight games this year, man,
So when I play for the Saints and uh no,
you know, we get to go to those games and
they might be freezing outside and the next thing. You know,
you got this seventy degrees inside no matter where you at,
So it's gonna be fun. Tail game might be a
(26:24):
little tough, but like I said, we're gonna come out
strong because it's one of those environments that women are
not gonna be too cold, their kids are not gonna
be too cold, and everybody can go out there and
have just have a great, great time as a family.
What's the turkey?
Speaker 2 (26:38):
What do you need to Yeah, what do you need
to see in this game? Key from this team? What
do you what do you want to see? What do
you expect to see in this game? I think for
me personally, I think we're just for one. You know,
we got some guys that we just talked about, some
seniors that they've got two games left, maybe some you know,
bowl games left in terms of you know, Senior Bowls
(26:59):
or uh, you know whatever whatever bowls they have for
the seniors anymore. But this game right here, what do
you what do you expect to see or what would
you like to see from these guys. Would you like
to see some young guys get more action or you
want to just keep it rolling with the way we've
been doing it. The whole time.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
I mean, first, get the dub, you get the dub regardless.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
I mean that's well, I get that, I get that.
But sometimes when you I mean, I mean, think about
it when you Sometimes when you've already we can't play
in the Big Ten championship game, you know, we're out
of the college playoff situation. Sometimes you need some of
these games to get guys some some opportunities, some reps.
So that's that's all I was saying.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Okay, that's that's a good point. What I would what
you could do is start maybe filtering some of those
guys in play here to play there if you want.
But again, I mean, like I said, well, one, you
always want to in the in the regular season off
of the win. Also, we have opportunity to go to
a New Year six Bowl, which is very very procedure
in itself of course, not the playoffs, but you get
(27:56):
you know, it's a prestigious bowl, plus no money for
the program. So I think that's first and foremost. But
it would be good, you know, if we're if we're ahead,
and they'll get so many young guys in because now
with the rules it's a little different with red shirting
back when I play, you couldn't get on the field
at all. But I think now these kids can play
(28:17):
up to four games. So you know, if there's some
kids that you was worried about not playing, now they
can get in, like I said, play a game and
that don't hurt their eligibility. I think that's always always
a good thing. And with mission said, you just don't
know because then they going through all that turmoil, what
happened with you, No Tucker the coach earlier in the season.
(28:38):
You know they're gonna be hyped up because this is
there's the that's their this is their senior day, and
some of these guys that's the last Sounder ever gonna play.
We're going to a bowl game. Some of these kids
either they're not going to be playing for playing after
this week, or somebody be transferring or whatever it is.
So we got really focused on that. But it would
(29:00):
be good to see some of these young kids because
I know, like it was me, I feel like I
shouldn't have started as a freshman, but though for me
it would be it would have been awesome that I
could say, hey, I went out there, you know, I
rosued and I was able to get out there and
play a few games just to know and feel what
the college speed and the what it takes to play
(29:21):
on that level.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Right right, no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Man.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Well it's gonna be it's gonna be a go one.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
Man.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
I know these guys are gonna be pumped to go
out there. And you know what you said it best
to those Well no, well you said the best of
those young kids. You know when you when you talk
at the Rose Bowl, you know you got to send
their seniors out, you know, the right way, you know,
And a lot of these seniors, you know they deserve
because they you know, going through the program. Some of
(29:48):
them came back for fifty years. You know, a lot
of guys are trying to get into the pros right away.
So I just think that they're gonna go out there,
and I think we're gonna we need to still fine
tune some things. You can't get enough game reps when
it comes to this, you know, So game reps are huge.
Game reps are gonna be great for this game, for
Drew and the wide receivers, because I mean, they never
(30:10):
really found their their groove together, in my opinion. You know,
started off kind of nice, but seemed like all season
long was a roller coaster ride. The running backs never
got into a groove all year, like we expected no
home runs hit, you know. So there's a lot of
work to be done on the offensive side of football.
And I think every single game, and not to say
that Michigan State's are bums or anything, but every single
(30:30):
game is opportunity for those guys to get those those
game reps. And I mean, hell, we just knew that
Nick Singleton was going to have an eighty r run.
We knew that Kroll was going to have a thirty
yard thirty five yard touchdown and that never materialized. This year.
We knew that Drew Aller was going to struggle a
little bit because his first year is a starter. But
at the same time, though, you know, they that the
(30:51):
connection never happened. And look we're looking at We're in
week ten, We're week what's our twelfth game coming up
right now? So it's kind of you know what I mean, Yes,
so it was like or ninth game, whatever it is,
eleventh game, So it's like, weird that it never clicked
on that side. So I just want to see it click.
I want to see that offense click early and often
and then give some of those other young guys an
(31:11):
opportunity to play late in that game.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
Yeah, I agree. Yeah, I mean obviously, you know you
said it could say it ain't better than you just did.
You don't know what it was or what it is,
and that's for next week and things like that after
the season. But you know, you get opportunity each week
to get there and play. And for like Drew, we
got some young receivers coming back and tight ends. No,
(31:35):
you try to use this momentum, you know, going into
obviously this game, the Bowl game, into the off season,
because like I said, something's missing. I don't know what
it is, leadership or scheme or whatever it is. Something's
just not there. And you know you can use utilize
this as an opportunity. And one thing you said, I
(31:57):
know with me, every time I got in the in
the game, I want to go try to hit a
home run, you know when I was fresh, play with you.
So now these kids, there might be some kids that
are sitting back saying, hey, this dude is a real
deal and we're just holding them back now because of
who's in front of them. So maybe you might have
some of those Uh, no diamonds in the rough out
(32:20):
there that you know they're gonna be good. Maybe say,
you know what, all right, here's your time to shine
and get some of those players out there to look.
I really opened some eyes. See they can really change
the I guess the facet of the of the offense
and make some big plays.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
Yeah, we know, we know we got some players on
that team, and Coach Franklin and the whole crew, they
they recruit very well. We got a bunch of four
stars and five star guys that are just waiting for
an opportunity and uh you know sometimes most of times
those opportunities coming Bowl games too. So we're gonna talk
about that right now. Before I do that, though, kid,
I want to make sure everybody, please please make sure
(32:56):
everybody check out the Happy Value United website. And also,
you know, we're doing a lot of stuff with Up
on Game right now, Leavar Arrington and his crew. Man,
they got a lot of really good stuff that's gonna
be you know, housing our content as well. So Up
on Game and Happy Value United a place where you
can check out what we're what we are up to.
Speaker 3 (33:15):
Man.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
Uh talk about the bowls, I mean the predictions are
out there. I've seen I've heard a few Peach Bowl
in Atlanta, which would be nice. That's the Chick fil
A Bowl, the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, that'd be fun.
Or of course any bowl in Florida. We're all down
with for any bowler. We're always roomored for any bowl
in Florida. You know what I mean. Yes, I'm sorry.
(33:37):
I know you. You know, with your beautiful daughter, you
won't be able to make any of those. But I'm
going with my kids. It's like a tradition now for
us on during the holiday to find a Penn State
bowl game to go to, and so we'll see what happened.
I know. The Peach Bowl CEO says that Penn State
makes a lot of sense for them. Of course we do,
right because we travel well. I just talked about it, right, Yeah,
(33:58):
I mean Penn State at Penn State. That's that's a
that's a that's a get right there.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
It's like, you know, it's just funny, like you get
some not program but you get like some programs where
they're like, okay, yeah, we're not in the college in
my finals, so we're not gonna go. It's almost like
for them. The fans are spoiled. It's like a failure.
You know, we're not gonna go to these bowl games
a peach like a Peach Bowl or the Sugar Bowl
or something like that. They like, I rather go do
(34:26):
something else where with Penna State. They're like, shoot, we're
in New York's, we're playing on New Year's Day and
one of those big bowl games. Were gonna come out
there and support no matter what. And so that's what
you're saying, because you get like certain certain teams and
certain matchups. You know, we've seen on TV. It thing
ain't sold out, Ain't a lot of people there. So
you know, we we're always a big job. People love
(34:47):
us come because we come.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
First of all.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Nobody wants to be in Pennsylvania or in the Northeast.
They're in the holidays because it's freezing. So now you
get someone that's nice or you know, a good town,
and then we're gonna we're gonna come with our with
our care so he will be nice. Obviously the Orange Bowl,
then I then we can all go over that one.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
That's what I was helping for.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Yeah, but uh hey, I'll be like I said, I'd
be happy obviously disappointed we wouldn't be able to play
in the top the semi final games, but if we
can play on New Year six, still have the opportunity. No,
that's a I mean, that's a and then in the
in the long term, that's a successful a program. It
is just helping us get to that to the next
(35:28):
level we want to go.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
You know, that's so, that's so you know, Okay, that's
so important. You say that too, man, because everybody, you know,
the last couple of weeks, especially after the Mission game,
everybody's up in arms. Everybody's up in arms about another
loss to you know, a number three, a top five team,
which you know, who beats everybody. Have to say with
the top five team, who's who's beat everybody beat them?
(35:52):
Well too, damn it, man. We this team goes, this
team goes ten and two every year and goes to
a New York six Bowl and brings in millions of
dollars to the university. And everybody's pissed off because we
didn't win one of those two games. And that drives
me nuts because it's not like we're not trying to
win those games. Those teams just a little bit better
than us, right, you know what I mean? But it
(36:12):
drives me nuts when you when you sit there and
you how many teams we just talked about Rutgers, we
talk about Michigan States, who's coming up? You know, all
the other teams in the Big ten that are out there.
How many teams would love to have a ten to
two season year after year after year with a shot
at being in the playoffs by winning one of those
two losses. You know what I mean. We're so spoiled
(36:34):
even though we've never been as you know, we've we've
been on the same path for decades now, Kaijona, since
you left, we haven't had a team that has lost
only one game. You guys don't lose any nobody. And
since then it's been the same thing.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
Right, Yeah, I mean think about I mean, no respect
again to the different team, but what would a Minnesota
or Indiana or oh the City ten to two every year?
Right now? Where are at?
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Man?
Speaker 3 (37:05):
They? I mean, they would do anything? And again I
get it because it's a fan of us. We were
pissed off. The fans are pissed off. It seems like
we go ten to two and the only two teams
we can't beat is those two teams, why I get that?
And then you know they had time to drive, We
had time to grivet. Everybody was pissed off. But again,
like I said in the podcast last week, from where
(37:26):
we were ten years a decade ago, we was almost
s and u or even worse than. Actually they wanted
to They they basically wanted to wipe us off of
the map and say, you know what, Penn State football
just doesn't exist anymore. They might as well go and
be no disrespect Division one, Double A, Division two, three,
(37:46):
whatever it is. We want to We just want to
ruin their whole football program. But obviously thanks to coach Bryant,
the fan base who stuck by us, the seniors, the
recruiting class, they came in a year. They they wanted
to help rebuild something and they did. But like you
were saying, is yes, I want to have a chance
to go to Daddy. There's one hundred and fifty teams
(38:08):
out there that wants to have a chance to go
to Daddy. Only four can go. But the fact that
you say, you know what, hey, we're going ten and
two playing New Year six Bowl, have a top ten ranking,
you know, at least you know the programs here and
say Okay, no, now we're not we're here. What do
we need to do to get it to here? You
don't want to be like, we're here and we just
(38:28):
wanted at least to get it to here and they'd
be satisfied. No, if we're here now, that's all. The
worst we do is is just go up and try
to figure out what are those missing pieces we have
to do to overcome you know, those averses against those
top two teams that we have not had successful within
the last few years.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
So I'm gonna tell you what I'm gonna I'm gonna
tell you how we get there, John, and I said
it last week too, Nil put your money where your
mouth is. You guys want to talk to us and
then help out with the Nils though, period. That's all
I mean. Yeah, I mean, you'd have to pay, you'd
had to pay, You'd had to pay me today to
go to any university. And I don't know if Penn
State would buck up, you know for me and I
(39:09):
might not have gone there. It's just the way it
is these days. So instead of people bitching and moaning
about the results, we lose players, Like I said, Marvin
Harrison passed right by Penn State to go to Ohio
State because we couldn't afford a guy like that, you know,
And that's what the rumor is. Now, that's that's and
there are a couple other guys I knew they were
out there in the portal that we couldn't. We couldn't
(39:31):
pointing up the money for him, right, So if you
want to get guys, you know, n I l period.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
No, I agree. Yeah, It's it's kind of like the
nature of the beast. And unfortunately, obviously with the fans know,
they know they spend their money, you know, going to
the games and the tickets and everything already. But you know,
just like you know people donate to the program or
a different athletic boosters, this is the same thing if
you want those top tier guys, because these kids come
(40:01):
out of high school, they got to take care of
their families and things too, and they have an opportunity
to do so. I mean, they'd be foolish if not.
I mean, obviously we're gonna be biased because we came
to State because we already played here. But if iways
come out of high school, you know, you say, okay, yeah,
I like these programs, but at the same time, not
say you don't necessary Chase, who gives me the highest
(40:21):
amount of money, but if I could do something to
take care of my family, that's something that they think
about because a lot of us didn't grow with anything,
and now this might be the only thing. So I
see why sometimes a fan base like why we always
got to do this and do that, because if you
ain't doing it, the other school doing it, and they're
doing it correct without even thinking about it, and these
(40:42):
and they and these kids keep on defecting. We going
there and you know, obviously we want to see us
in those positions. If you look down at every University
of Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Uh, obviously Fortis they had
a good season, but for the most part, look at
all the stars. You're saying Georgia every recruiting class fifteen
(41:05):
to twenty five stars, Alabama twenty five stars. No, and
then you know, we're happy to just get one or
two and no respect to our program. I love it,
and coach Frankn's done a great job. But in those
games against like the High States and the Michigans where
they you know they put they those big boys start
laying laying on us, uh and start pushing that line,
(41:26):
start wearing us down. Eventually the tide's going to turn.
And that's what we do the teams, and that's what
to the teams that are inferior to us, And that's
what those two programs have been doing us too. So
we got to get those studs in here to try
to steer the ship and overcome those diversities.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
Okay, I never you know, I never like to talk
about anybody else's money. You know, we always had that
locker room talk. You keep your hand in my pocket,
you know, that was always a big thing. You don't
you don't worry about what somebody else's making. But we
talked about how many the average crowd, these seniors playing
in front of, right over one hundred and eight thousand
(42:04):
they played in front of. If half of those people
were to commit to five dollars a month, five bucks
a month to the nil deal, half of them, that
would go. That would go a long way. Hell, I
give fifty dollars a month to the nil, you know,
(42:25):
but that's what I can afford. I'm not rich anymore, key,
you know, I used to be. You know when I
live by you, next door to you, big player. You
know what I mean. I was. I had a little
some coin in my pocket, but I take fifty bucks
out of my own stuff and I donate to the
nil myself, man, because I know that's what it's gonna take. Man.
So if you know nothing else, man, you know this podcast.
(42:46):
It's all our last regular season game pod, and we're
gonna follow them through the Bowl. I just want people
to understand that the game is changed. Yeah, the game
has changed. We have to any up and Ponio. A
lot of these other schools has been doing it already,
and they've been doing it. I'm not I'm not missing
any names, but it was under the table. Now everything's
on the table. But they have the structure and the
(43:07):
infrastructure to go out and do that. And we need
to be the ones that go out there and do
the same thing right now in terms of on the
table legit. Because we've always been above board, from Joe
to to Bill to coach Franklin above board. Well, now
we gotta play catch up and we need people's help, man,
to make sure that we don't lose guys that are
in state. The Marvin Harrison juniors that are in state
(43:30):
because we can't afford them. And I know people like
we can't pay they got they got rooming board. That's
to be enough. It's not enough. It's not enough anymore.
So that's my spill on that man. And that's you know,
that's all I can say about it. And to help
people start, you know, putting their money where their mouth is,
they need to be quiet and just enjoy our ten
(43:50):
and two seasons.
Speaker 3 (43:52):
Well thank you just saying fine out. I mean, like
you see those things on TV all the time when
you do fight I was like, okay, either that guy,
I gotta take what my number one a McDonald's, which
is probably I mean it used to be a fight
outum for a number one out. It's like eleven bucks.
I gotta take my away from Wendy's. If I could
do that once a month, just don't as you know,
(44:14):
I got a great diet. But I'm saying, but fine outs.
You think about like you know, if I if I don't,
if I don't buy one mixed drink or something like that,
that's all it takes, you know, sixty bucks a year.
They can change. I mean, you don't know. But at
the same time, you say, you know what, at least
I'm doing news to help out because not only nil
is no obviously the players, but obviously you're helping out
(44:38):
eighteen year old kid. Seventeen year old kid be able
to provide for his family who might not be able
to do so elsewise. You know, with me, I was
the first one to graduate from my family and grand
my mom had to work hard, this and that. But
if I could have got a little money to be
able to help take care of her and make our
(44:58):
lives a lot easier when when I was little, I
would have done it too. So I can't fault the kids.
And like I said, it's the nature of the game
now and you got to play by the rules. If not,
you know, hey, you know you can. We can be
the IVY leagues and stuff like that, and it will
be mediocre. But obviously a lot of us go to
Penn State for football, not only just the players but fans.
(45:20):
I mean, you know, we are the cash cow and
everybody looks forward to uh being a happy valley from
beginning of September to the end of November. And you
know how good would it feel to you know, the
field that will go to the playoffs and being Ohio
and I'm from Columbus, I mean, I mean Grant, that's
a bigger town and bigger city. But those people in Columbus,
(45:42):
they passionate about their football. They don't they don't believe,
they don't believe twice when they say we need this,
we need that, because you know what, we got the standard.
If you want to keep on having the standard and
feeling good and say you know what, yeah, we're going
to win the Big ten and go play in the
playoffs every year. This is what needs to be done.
And people say, yes, we want that because once, if
(46:05):
the team's more successful, your business gonna be more successful.
Now the whole the city is gonna be more successful.
The enrollment, the students, everything is gonna be more. The
money's gonna go up everywhere if people want to buy
gear and everything. It's a it's a it's a circling
what we call a circling effect. One thing affects another.
So uh, noth of my ranting, but no, thank you
(46:27):
for everybody who has been supporting the program and the collective.
And if you're not like O you said, if it's
five bucks or whatever, you can no, no, please go
out there and support but uh no, but thank you
no for Happy Value United and up on Game and Juice.
You allow me to be on this podcast with you
this year to talk about our our beloved team and
(46:49):
uh the support a program and that's that's what it's
all about. The support our program. Support these kids and
help them become better better uh no, better citizens and
better people when they leave.
