The Boston Celtics advanced to 4-0 on the season with a win over Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and the Milwaukee Bucks thanks to an insane shooting performance from Payton Pritchard. He scored 28 off the bench and tied the Celtics franchise record with eight made 3-pointers as a reserve. It’s got fans talking about his Sixth Man of the Year candidacy. We also take comments on what’s different about this year’s team, as well as the balance on Boston’s roster.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Dound off with me folks down the Boston Celtics remaining
perfect on the season at four and zero after a
win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Who is this second top
tier Eastern Conference contender that the Celtics have taken down
so far this season. Of four games, two of the
games we're against some of the lower teams in the East,
the Detroit Pistons, the Washington Wizards, But two of the

(00:30):
wins are against teams that many people are saying are
Boston's challengers in the East, the New York Knicks on
opening night and again tonight against Damian Lillard against Giannis Antetokumpo.
The Celtics come out with the eleven point win. And listen,
this game, as we saw the other night against Detroit,

(00:51):
was not perfect for the Celtics all night long. They
came out kind of slow. You got to give credit
to Milwaukee. Whatever they were doing on defense seemed to
kind of low Boston's offense down. There wasn't as much spacing,
there wasn't as much ball movement, as much body movement.
But eventually the Celtics found their way, and we're gonna
talk about that later in the episode. But a few

(01:12):
things that stood out from this one, and obviously Peyton Pritcheard,
I mean, another exceptional game. This guy is red hot
from three point range. There are not many people, if any,
in the NBA right now who are hotter from long
distances than him, and we're gonna talk about that more
in detail later in this episode. But the Celtics in
large part won this game because of his shooting on

(01:35):
a night when Jason Tatum did not shoot the ball
all too well, guess who did. Peyton Pritchard coming off
the bench gave the Celtics the offensive boosts that they
needed and that wound up pushing them into the winner circle. Obviously,
along with some other contributors along the way. But Peyton
Prichard was awesome and we're gonna talk more about him
later on.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Another thing that we want to talk about is Jordan Waalsh.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
How about this Walsh getting a call out of nowhere
to many people's surprise, to check into the game in
the first quarter of tonight's game against Milwaukee.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Did you expect it?

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Probably not? Did I expect it, absolutely not. I did
not see that coming. But thirteen minutes off the bench
comes in in the first quarter again, in the second
half and made some plays. I mean, one of the
key stretches of the game happened because of him. It
was during an eighteen to two run for the Celtics
to close out the third quarter start the fourth quarter.

(02:31):
Energy is what he provided to the Celtics. The Celtics
had a shot in transition that they missed at the
basket and Jordan Walsh came out of nowhere trying to
crash the glass. Did not grab the rebound on that attempt,
but he did draw a loose ball foule which kept
the ball in the Celtics favor. And then just seconds later,

(02:52):
after another misshot Walsh came in out of nowhere, tried
to dunk it home on the rebound attempt, but wound
up tipping it in for his only two point of
the night. But that stretch really contributed to the crowd
getting into the game, the Celtics building momentum, and eventually
pulling away for the win. And a thing that stands

(03:12):
out to me about Jordan Walsh is I haven't heard
a lot of people say it, but there's one role
on this team that is wide open for the taking.
That the Celtics had last season and whose role was
that O'shaber set. He's not back with the team, but
think back to last season. What do you remember about
what o'shaper set brought to the Celtics every time he

(03:35):
checked into the game, every time he came out too
the floor, what do you remember energy? He played with
pure energy, and that role is wide open for someone
to take in this rotation. Jordan Walsh made a claim
tonight that he might be that guy if he plays
that hard, with that type of energy, making good decisions

(03:57):
with the ball in his hand, knowing that he's got.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
A ton of ten around him. He doesn't need to
try to score.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
He doesn't need to try to take over offensively and
then find his way defensively.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
And make an impact at that end.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
That's exactly what o'she Brissette did last season. You've got
to know your role, you've got to buy into it,
and that might be it for Jordan Walsh. Do we
know that he's going to be a consistent contributor to
this team. No, it's too early. He wasn't that last season.
He's got to prove himself. But seeing what he did

(04:30):
tonight and bringing that energy and really playing a role
in Boston building the momentum that wound up leading to
the win. That's a pretty good first step in trying
to cement yourself if you're Jordan Walsh into Boston's rotation
as someone who's going to be called upon consistently to
provide something very specific to the team that they need

(04:54):
on certain nights. So that happens, and then you've got
to say that there's a difference in this team this
season compared to seasons past. It feels like other teams
are constantly battling uphill against the Celtics. And I'm pretty
sure the Milwaukee Bucks so go back into their locker

(05:16):
room and maybe go on the bus tonight, maybe on
the plane and talk to themselves. Like I felt like
we were playing pretty good for most of that game,
only hanging neck and neck with the Celtics. It's a
constant uphill battle and then at some point, boom, they
hit you with a haymaker. They being the Celtics, they
knock you out and pull away. What does that remind

(05:39):
you of? I know what it reminds me of, and
that is the dynasty that was the Golden State Warriors.
Now I'm not saying that the Celtics team is going
to be a dynasty. All I'm saying is that that
feeling of playing against the Warriors, in constantly feeling like
you were battling uphill, Like I remember being at all

(06:02):
of those games, both in Boston and in Golden State,
in San Francisco and Oakland, in remembering what it felt
like to play against that team, You felt like you
had to play perfect basketball just to be close.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
And that's what it feels like with this Celtics team.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
And again it's early, We're only four games into the season,
but Milwaukee just showed it again tonight. You hanging close,
you feel like you got a shot, You're playing pretty
darn good basketball, your two stars are making an impact,
and then all of a sudden, the Celtics find their
way and they're ten to fifteen points ahead in an instant.

(06:47):
That's exactly what used to happen when the Warriors were
winning championship after championship. So again, we're not making predictions here.
We're not saying the Celtics are gonna win as many
games or as many titles as those Warriors teams did.
But what I am saying, and I'm saying it with confidence.

(07:08):
Is that playing against this Celtics team has to feel
a lot like playing against those Warriors teams. A constant,
uphill battle, and when it gets to the fourth quarter,
that's a lot that has worn on your body in
your mind throughout the first three It's like in football

(07:31):
when they say you got.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
To run the ball, run the ball, run the ball,
and wear the defense out by the end of the game.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
That's what it has to feel like playing against the Celtics.
They're just constantly coming at you and then eventually, boom,
they're gonna hit the big play.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
And they did it again tonight.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
All right, we're gonna get into Pritchard, so let's take
some comments from the fans. One of them specifically is
about Pritchard, so that's where we're gonna talk mostly about him.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
That's coming last.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
But first up, we got Michael Klapp on the difference
between this year's team and teams of the past.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I just gave my take. Let's hear what he has
to say.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
Then we're going to Tomo and he comments on Boston's balance,
and then lastly we've got Florida man chiming in on
Peyton Pritchard and something we might be able to start
talking about, even though it's early in the season with.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Regard to Peyton Pritchard.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
So let's dive in to our first comment here that's
coming up from Michael Clapp. All Right, Michael Clapp says,
finally we have the ability to turn it on and
off after years of losing winnable games where they didn't
look locked in, feels like they finally have the ability
to just turn it on late and win easily anyway.

(08:43):
That just goes to show the talent on the team. Michael,
I totally agree.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
With you that.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Well, I agree with you in a sense that it
feels like the Celtics this year are different than teams
in the past because there's a moment in the game
where they're just gonna have their spurt ability takeover and
they're gonna run away with a win, kind of like
I just commented on, Do I think that they are
turning it on and off?

Speaker 2 (09:06):
No?

Speaker 1 (09:07):
I do not think that's the case. I mean tonight,
I think they were playing with effort. They were trying
to play great basketball. They just weren't making the same shots,
they weren't making the same passes. It just wasn't their
night for the first few quarters. But then to your point,
it's not necessarily that they turn it on, because I

(09:27):
think it was on all night, but it finally caught
the rhythm. The Celtics finally caught their rhythm, and then
from that point on, Milwaukee just didn't have enough to
stay with them. So it is different than prior seasons
where some of these games you feel like the Celtics
might have lost. And actually, going through many of the
comments that people sent in for tonight's game, it's that

(09:50):
they feel like there's something different and.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
That the Celtics are going to win games that they
used to lose.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
And I felt that the Celtics turned the page a
little bit last season in that regard. I mean, they
won sixty four games, they had to have won some
that they probably should have lost. But it feels like
that is now a common thing where the Celtics they
find a way and they're gonna pull away at some

(10:19):
point in the long run. There's gonna be nights where
they just don't have it and it's gonna be four
quarters of them not playing great basketball. And by the way,
there's also gonna be nights just like there was with
the Warriors back in the day, where they played great
and the other team just happens to play better.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
It's gonna happen. It's the NBA. There's talent across the league.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
There are a lot of really good teams with a
lot of really good players in this league. So there's
gonna be Knights like that. But the Celtics have that
ability to just boom, catch their rhythm, pull away and
deposit what was a close game into the win column
with a double digit margin. And that's exactly what they

(10:57):
did tonight against a Milwaukee team that I'm going to
mind you everyone is saying is one of the top
three or four teams in the Eastern Conference. They've got
two of the best players in the NBA. The only
guy that they're missing right now is Chris Middleton. So
that team was pretty close to holl tonight. They're one
and three on the season, and the Celtics just dealt

(11:18):
them that third loss.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
So the Celtics did turn it on.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
Not to say that they weren't playing well, but they
did turn it on with the rhythm, they caught it
and they pulled away for the eleven point win. All Right,
Next up is Tomo saying, I love the fact that
it can be a different guy every night. That's team basketball, baby,
with two exclamation points. Holliday was huge down the stretch.

(11:42):
Peyton Pritchard was amazing. JB had a solid game even
though he started slow. Tatum may not have scored a lot,
but he made a lot of good reads. That's what
Tatum's gonna do every night. There's never gonna be a
night where Tatum doesn't read the defense well.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
He always does.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
It's just a matter of sometimes he's not gonna make
the shots. Sometimes the passes that he makes, his teammates
aren't gonna make the shots, so maybe the numbers won't
be there. But back to your original fact here in
your point here, Tomo, and love the fact that it
can be a different guy every night.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
It really does feel that way.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Drew Holliday hit the two biggest shots in the game
Saturday night in Detroit. Two three pointers back to back
erased a six point deficit, tied the game, all the
momentum behind the Celtics. Tonight, Peyton Pritchard catches fire, scores
the season high twenty eight points. Jalen Brown had a

(12:35):
great game, thirty points, his first thirty point game of
the season on ten of nineteen shooting. Jason Tatum has
two thirty seven, but he was just named Eastern Conference
Player of the Week. Let's keep going down the list.
Derek White, we all know he can score twenty something
points and take over a game at both ends of

(12:56):
the court. Sam Houser has not played since opening night.
He's gonna be a guy who impacts the offense and defense.
Chris has porzingis when he gets back. We all know
what he can do. A dominant seven foot three presidents
who can post up, score on the perimeter, and be
a matchup nightmare for teams when he runs a pick
and pop or pick and roll with Jalen Brown or

(13:17):
Jason Tatum. We talked about Drew Holliday and then Al
Horford just steady as can be all the time. Again,
Tonight drains another couple three pointers for the Celtics, did
not miss from three point range and shot four or
five from the field. So there is a top eight
on this team where anyone can have a great night,

(13:42):
anyone can take over. Just like tonight we saw Jason
Tatum shot six to sixteen from the field. Scored fifteen points.
You would have thought coming into this game, if that
took place, Milwaukee was not only maybe gonna win, but
they definitely were gonna be close. Well, they were for
three quarters, and then Prichard and the Boys pulled away.

(14:05):
Jalen Brown and the Boys pulled away, and the Celtics
win by double digits. And at one point they were
up by eighteen, so it wasn't that close. Down the stretch,
it's just guy at their guy at the guy, and
again it goes back to the original point. It feels
like battling an uphill battle constantly, because you just get

(14:25):
If you're not getting hit by Jason Tatum, you're getting
hit by Jalen Brown. If you're not getting hit by
Jalen Brown, you're getting hit by Jew Holliday. If you're
not getting hit by Jew Holliday, it's Derek White, so
on and so on and so on. There's just so
much talent top to bottom. It's almost impossible to stop.
There's no way all of these guys are gonna be
off in the same game. Maybe there might be a

(14:46):
game where most of them are off. There's almost never
gonna be a night where all of them are off,
so just talent top to bottom. It's really incredible to watch,
and it was fun to watch tonight as the Celtics
advance to four and oh all right, our last one
of the night coming in from Florida, man saying hashtag

(15:08):
PP six m why we all know what that means.
That means hashtag Peyton Pritchard six Man of the Year,
and ladies and gentlemen, it is early, but we need
to have the conversation because he is putting his name
into that conversation right from the start of the season.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Let's run through the numbers, folks.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
Twenty eight points off the bench tonight for Peyton Pritchard
eight of twelve from three point range.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
That ties the.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
Boston Celtics record ever for most three pointers made by
a reserve off the bench ties Eddie House. Shout out
Eddie House for being a guy who could come off
the bench and just drain threes. Well, Peyton Pritchard's that
guy too. He can distribute, he can disrupt defensively. He

(15:57):
is a great player who a lot of people overlook
early on in his career. I said it early on
to a lot of people. I said, I think this
guy could go to a bad team in the league
where he plays thirty minutes a night in average twenty
That was.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
A few years ago. Just imagine what he could do now.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
This three monster of Drew Holliday, Derek White and Peyton
Pritchard is absurd. You've got guys who can do different
things offensively, guys who can do different things defensively. And
Peyton Pritchard comes out of nowhere tonight with twenty eight
off the bench. Listen to the numbers of what he
has done in the last three games from beyond the arc.

(16:39):
He's now eighteen for twenty nine from three point range
over the last three games.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
Eighteen for twenty nine.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
That's sixty two point one percent from three point range.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
There's people, and.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
I'm not gonna say any names, maybe in this game tonight,
who can't do that from the free throw line. Peyton
Pritchard is doing it from the three point line sixty.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
Two percent over three games. This guy is on an
all time heater right now. Hell of a way to
start out the season for Peyton Pritchard. Huh, I mean unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
Do Celtics know that they've got a weapon off the bench.
They've got endless weapons in the starting lineup. They've got
Sam Hauser coming back soon, another weapon off the bench. Eventually,
they're gonna have Christas porzingis back. He's gonna start. And
this team is just gonna get deeper, in deeper, in deeper.

(17:42):
And if you ask the teams that they've played so
far this season, they would probably say that's not fair.
How can that team get deeper. Well, it's gonna happen.
They're gonna try to go five and zero on the season, folks.
Wednesday night, they are taking on the Pacers out in Indiana.
That opens up what is a four game road trip,

(18:05):
so the Celtics go away for a while.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
They've only played two home games this season.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
They're going to try to rattle off some more wins
on the road and try to come home to Boston
in a couple of weeks with a nice record under
their feet. And they just happen to be taking on
in their next home game Steve Kerr and those Golden
State Warriors that I talked about, So this is all
lining up perfectly. Can't wait for the Celtics to be

(18:30):
back in town. But in the meantime, they're going out
on the road and trying to grab some more wins.
So Wednesday night again, that game is against the Indiana
Pacers out in Indiana. The game will be on ESPN,
the game will be on NBC Sports Boston, and then
we will be right here after the game with our
SoundOff postgame show and I can't wait to take your
