Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hey, what's going on. It's Chris Carrino. This is the
Voice of the Nets Podcast, a postgame edition presented by Ticketmaster. Remember,
you can get involved with the conversation, your questions, your
comments immediately after the game on Twitter or x at BK.
Nets Radio is the way to reach us. Here is
our postgame coverage on the fan on the Brooklyn Nets
(00:31):
app as well. It's me and my longtime radio partner,
Tim Capstraw. Final home game of the twenty twenty three
to twenty four season. Nets come away with a victory
one oh six to one oh two, come back and
win the game in the fourth quarter, a fourth quarter
that featured nine league changes and Dennis Shruder coming up
(00:54):
with sixteen fourth quarter points to help put the game away.
The Nets with a season high fifteen block shots, seven
Panola Clowney, five for Nick Claxton, and they defeat the
Raptors one oh six, one oh two. Nets and the
home portion of their schedule at twenty and twenty one
(01:14):
on the season. And for a lot of this game,
the Nets weren't playing well and the Raptors were in control,
were leading the game. Emmanuel quickly had thirty two. They
were making threes, but just as they did a couple
of games ago, Dennis shooter big fourth quarter and the
Nets able to gain control in the fourth.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
And defended a Nuts at a different level in the
fourth quarter. Also they held the Raptors at twenty two points.
They didn't give up the threes like they did throughout
the game. And you're always looking to see if you
can build on something, whether it be an individual player
like a guy like Clowney, or a concept of having
two bigs on the floor that could be intimidating defensively.
(01:57):
And I thought the Nets saw both of that tonight
and and the ability of those guys that really protect
around the paint. They were really intimidating shot blocking. Clowney
is ability to move because we know Clason he's a good,
very good shot blocker, and he moves his feet well,
but so does Clowney. And for you know, Finnett's finally
(02:17):
rebounded the ball better or much better in the fourth quarter.
On the defensive glass Shuter got aggressive, made a lot
ton of plays, and again I thought it was a
little personal for him, not necessarily in a negative way.
Sometimes you want to beat your buddies too, right, Suter
played for the Raptors this past season for a big
portion in the year, so there was a little bit
(02:39):
more on it, and he was getting after it in
the fourth quarter, a lot of fun. It was just
a great atmosphere, crowd was terrific and a good win.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Noah Clowney is the twelfth teenager in NBA history to
block seven or more shots in a game, and amongst
those twelve teenagers, Clowney is the lowest drafted player to
a com blush that feat. He was the twenty first
pick in the twenty twenty three draft. Second most blocks
in a game by a rookie in franchise history. Only
(03:10):
Shawn Williams back in two thousand and seven and Mike
Jaminski in nineteen eighty one had more blocks in a
game than Noah Clowney as a rookie. The Nets with
the fifteen block shots the most in a game in
Barkley Center history. That's going back to twenty twelve twenty thirteen.
You had Clowney with seven, Claxton with five. The net
(03:34):
duos with five or more blocks in the same game
all time. Three other times Sam Booie and Derrek Coleman
back in nineteen ninety one, Nice Darryl Dawkins and Mike
Jaminski back in nineteen eighty two and in the nineteen
eighty two the eighty one eighty two season, Albert King
(03:56):
and Buck Williams did it.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
That's a lot of good names right there. That's a
lot NETS history right there.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yep, No Clowney writing himself into some NETS history. Six
players in double figures. Camp Thomas had twenty three, eighth
consecutive game that Cam Thomas has scored twenty or more points.
We're waiting to hear from Nets head coach Kevin Ollie.
We mentioned that there were six players in double figures.
Cam Johnson, who has been in and out of the
(04:21):
lineup of late, played twenty seven minutes tonight. Had thirteen points,
four of eight shooting, made three. Good to see him
get back. Dip his toe that has been injured. Back
of there.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
I get it, I got it. I'm paying attention. Dipped
his big toe that was injured.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
His nets have been limiting mickel Bridges numbers there minutes
a bit didn't play in the fourth quarter of this game.
He had eleven Nick Claxton with fourteen points and eleven rebounds.
That's his thirtieth double double of the season, that is
a career high for him, and the Nets win at
one O six to one oh two. Sweet. They win
the season series three games to one against the Raptors.
(04:59):
Nets will be back in action for the final two
games of the regular season as we take a look
at the upcoming schedule brought to you by Ticketmaster Make
More Memories Live with Ticketmaster, the official ticket marketplace of
the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA. They'll finish up the
season on Friday night at Madison Square Garden, then on
Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. Let's hear from Nets head coach
Kevin Olly.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
I just always believe the races and not give it
to the strong, go to swift as the ones that
adore usually get it.
Speaker 5 (05:26):
And we just adore it to the end and got
some stops.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
In the fourth quarter they scored twenty two points, and
then Noah and Nick was outstanding at the rim fifteen blocks.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
Was just outstanding.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
And then Dennis came to play in the fourth quarter
too and hit some clutch shots, hit two threes and
then got to the basket off of at o that
we drew up for him to get to the basket
and got an end one. So it's just great execution
at the end, making our free throws at the end,
and that's what That's the Brooklyn right gritty, but with
a little style to get the fans into it.
Speaker 5 (05:56):
We didn't want to blow out so they all leave early.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
So all the guys who just talked about just the
fan base and how they wanted to do this for
them to have a home game like this, the last
one and to walk off the court with the one
even in a game where you heard the Brooklyn chance,
just like how sweet is that for you guys as
a group to just to you know, in that home
stretch like that.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Yeah, we wanted to do that. You know, we missed
some shots, but that's our fan base. It just energizes us.
Every time we get a stop or we get a
big play, they just come alive and it makes our
players come alive. So the energy we fell for them
is fan Appreciation Night. And I didn't think it was
gonna be that many people. I mean it was standing
room only, and now they feel that building up and
(06:39):
you can just feel the spirit. You can just feel
them cheating for us each and every play and I'm
glad we gave them something to really go home with
and just.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
Grateful for their participation in this season.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
There's been a lot of changes, a lot of ups
and downs, a lot of injuries, but the one thing
that didn't change or didn't waiver is them supporting us,
and I just really appreciate that With No.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
I mean, obviously you've had an opportunity to see him
practicing and playing and growing, but the speed with which
he's acclimated himself to the NBA game to be able
to impact it like that down the stretches that surpassed
even your expectation considering No, not what.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
I've seen in the preseason.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
And I gotta give you know, Move and all the
coaches down to Long Island a big time shot out
because you know, he could have powdered down there. He
could have you know, Jay will is up here, I'm
down here, I'm the number one pick.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
He could have had all that stuff going on.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
But I think they just did a great job coaching them,
putting them in situations down there. So when we got him,
he was already said he knew exactly what we wanted
to do, how he can perform, and he came in ready,
and that's what you have to do. You never know
when somebody's gonna knock on your door, when opportunity not
going to end it.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
Your job is to be ready.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
And he took on every challenge we gave him. We
like fifteen red. We're not going on you're gonna replaced
Nick in fifteen red. We're gonna play fifteen red. And
he's just held his own in a high seven blocks
and the resilience that he showed got to turnover and
then he came back and had one of the best
plays all season with that block, and you know, that
(08:17):
just shows his forty two. That shows his impact that
he has on the game, and that shows him going
to the next play, because he easy could have put
his head down and powdered and got frustrated and came
back and blocked the shot, and then we ran behind
and got a rebound. So it was amazing to see that.
It was amazing to see the execution. We called the
timeout and executed and timeout got the ball in. So
(08:39):
it was great execution and it all came together and
now we got two more to go. Go play the
next and now we're moving on to that so we're
gonna stay in the present moment.
Speaker 7 (08:49):
And obviously you got the result, but Michael did not
play in the fourth I'm curious, is he okay and
or was that just game flow?
Speaker 5 (08:57):
Yeah, he's okay. Yeah, he's okay.
Speaker 8 (09:00):
Can just kind of going to that last play with
no I mean, obviously you mentioned he could have just
you know, let that play go and get not made
the player whatever, But just what does they say about
a teenager who's learning this NBA you know system to
be able to have the fortitude and not just go
there but make a play and not make a foul.
Look what does that say about his potential defensive but
also his mindset?
Speaker 4 (09:18):
Yeah, it just says everything. I mean, we've been saying it.
I know y'all been saying it in his extended minutes here,
But he plays without fouling. It's amazing how he does it,
and we've been seeing it all year. When he gets
to the rim, he can be vertical and then he
can block a shot at the apex he don't come down,
So it was just amazing to see that. I think
he has seven blocks tonight. You know, he didn't hit
(09:39):
his threes, but they was running them off the line,
the poison to get to the bucket.
Speaker 5 (09:44):
You know.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
I mean, he's he's gonna be an outstanding basketball player.
But he's not satisfied. And that's what I love about him.
He's not satisfied with this. He'll get down on himself
a little bit and he'll come back. He'll ask the
coaches how he can get better. So he's not satisfied.
So I know that.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
So that's what I love about him the most.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
He inbounded Clowny Garrett Temple knocked and loosen stolen all
the way driving it to the other end projected by
clown He recovered to block the shot. Shuter's got to
lose ball and a fowl is committed by Toronto.
Speaker 7 (10:18):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Noah Clowny had his pocket picks, but then he recovered
to block the shot of Temple. It's the seventh block
shot of the game for Cloudy. It was a block
party Ah Aaron Brooklyn Noah Cloudy made a mistake. Made
up for it though on the other end, and there
(10:39):
were some impressive blocks from him tonight. Not just that
one there, but you know there was another where I
forget who it was was driving. He was guarding him
out of a perimeter. Yeah, the guy was driving, got
him in the air and like a fake and then
went around to go under him, and he just reached
out his arm and blocked the shot. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
His length is ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
He's got great timing, he's got excellent feet, he elevates quickly.
He's you know, a very good shot blocking, especially.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
As a four.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
You know what I mean, as a as a as
a fore man out there, to be lined up with
Claxton out there, that's that's a lot of rejection out there.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
And you know, I'm a guy that knows rejection, and
there was a lot of it tonight.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Well, it just gets you excited going forward with what
Noah Clowney can do because I think we all thought
he had some promise. I think he played great in
the G League, and I don't know if we thought
he could be this ready for the NBA, you know,
this early in his career.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah, And when I saw him earlier in the year,
I thought, this is this guy's a long way off.
Then he saw him. I think he saw him in
the Milwaukee Buck game right after Chris. He had played
pretty well and looked good. He had like fourteen points. Hey,
you know, he's made good progress. And then you just
keep following along watching the G League stats, and then
they're talking about him making threes and hustling around, and you.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Know, you still see he's gonna still gonna take time.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
It's not gonna he's not gonna be a fit, you know,
ready to go at a high incredibly high level next year.
But he's gonna be able to be a contributor, and
he'll learn and he'll continue to get stronger. And he's
just a very very good looking prospect that gets gets
you exciting. And I just like the fact that you know,
he's I don't like a center at six nine that often,
(12:24):
so I like the fact that he could play some
of that and be effective and especially down the road,
but again being complementary. A couple of things we saw
tonight with his game also on the corner catch, ripping it,
driving it along the baseline, handle on the ball, finishing
a couple of plays like that part of it also,
So he's getting a little bit of everything going. He's
(12:46):
you know, he's just got a lot to work with.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
He's he's gotta you know, because he's six y nine. Yeah,
he's got to be able to deliver on the offensive end. Yeah,
because we know he can guard multiple positions, but he's
gonna be he's gonna be undersized if he's going to
be a sinner, and yes, he can protect the rim. Yes,
if maybe want to play a little small ball here there,
(13:10):
you can do that. He's gonna be able to be
comfortable to step out make threes, and then that will
open up his driving ability because he can play off
the dribble. We saw that tonight. But he's also comfortable
shooting the ball and I think that's the the evolution
of his game that will continue to grow.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
And it just looks like it should go in. He's
got a great looking stroke. It gets to the free
throw line, it looks like it's supposed to go in there.
Good looking player, good fundamentals, a really good future. It's
a positive going into in the next season, you know,
the next couple of games and on into the next season.
I think it's a very very very encouraging watching him,
(13:48):
watching him play. And again, the drafting by NETS management
has been outstanding over our time here in Brooklyn, and
I think they got another good one and Noah Colonney,
that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Uh Todd Barilla checking in on Twitter at BK nets Radio.
The way to reach this. Clowney and cam Thomas development
this season has been outstanding. Of Clowney can continue to
develop his offensive game, and we resigned Clackston has potential
to be a real headache for teams playing US next
year with two athletic bigs that can defend at all
five positions. Yeah, I think again, Clowney's got to get
(14:22):
bigger and stronger. If he's gonna play with Nick Klak,
he's got to be a good offensive player to play
with Nick Clackson. We've seen that with Nick out there,
you're gonna need You're gonna need four shooters, you know,
four guys that can be a threat offensively. The thing
I like about Nick Claxon and what his his game
has developed as the game as the season has gone along,
is his ability to be a playmaker. We've seen it
(14:43):
in glimpses over the last few years. This year I
thought it went to a whole other level where he
was able to get it in the high post, you know,
put it on the ground, take guys off the dribble.
Look tonight he had yet four assists tonight is a
very game.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
It's very good at playing in the high elbow in
the high post area. It can make plays. He can
fake handoffs, he can dribble the ball. He can also
off a defensive rebound, advance the ball up the floor quickly.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Yes, he can.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
He can take it full court. We've seen that a
number of times. He can take it three four dribbles
and kick it up to somebody else. There's work to
be done, but there's also reason for some optimism there
also that's you know, it's it's gonna be interesting to
watch it evolve.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Uh, you may need another thumper exactly.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
I think the Nets need one more body.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
You know, if you like, like a true big, like
a seven, like they run sharp has that game. But
again he's like six to nine exactly.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
I think. I think because you run into guys around the.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Case, right, just break glass in case of emergency. Yeah,
and you know, maybe even more than that, but even
a I mean you can get a really good yeah
six eleven, big and strong.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
But you need a big body. Yeah, I think the
Nets could use a body. Uh that would help them.
Also it's hard to find that common, but a body
that could even open up the floor and shoot it right,
I mean Brook Lopez type or something like that.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Yeah, now our wish list is getting bigger.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
I didn't mean.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
That kind of play, but I just think you need
sometimes a guy that in the event that you go
up against those old school centers. I mean, you don't
have to really deal with it too much tonight, but
there are those nights where you go up against Joel
Embiid and yeah, you go up against Brook Lowez, you
don't have a chance, and you know one guys that
could just kind of just beat you up down load.
It's a bonus the other night. You know, you need
(16:32):
a big, big player that can come in put a
body on it. Exactly.
Speaker 5 (16:37):
Well.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Stencer, as we know, has been going through some difficult times.
This year's daughter has been tweeting for him, and it's
her birthday, So happy birthday, Victoria. Yeah, Victoria will take
this as a birthday win for me. My dad said
he liked the game because it was a game for
just the joy of basketball, since the season ends on Sunday,
for better or for worse, but not for lunch of
course used earlier. But yeah, it's this was you know
(17:02):
you it's hard. I think the thing is sometimes it's
hard to get up for these games when you know
that even just being ancillary broadcasters, media people like fans,
maybe you're not that pumped for the game beforehand, but
then the game gets going and then it becomes competitive
and then you're you know, the crowd was great tonight.
(17:25):
We've talked about that. Kevin Olly talked about it sellout
crowd and it wasn't like one of these sellouts on
paper where you go, oh, I saw five thousand empty
places filmed.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Yeah, and they studied and.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
They were excited and they were into it at the
end of the game. Uh, because that just takes over.
I mean, listen, there's only one team that hoists the
trophy at the end of the year. Everybody else is
just playing basically games that are going to be a
championship for them. It's all about competing and seeing your best,
and these guys were giving it their best.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
It was.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
It was a fun night, It was entertaining, and it
was it was there's extra too.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
I think the shrewd yes the shorter being an x
Raptor got him fired up in the fourth quarter. I
think the Raptors going at him had a little bit
there was a little something extra. Yeah, yeah, you know
what I can talk about a little bit. Cam Thomas
got targeted some in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
I thought he did a good job.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
I thought he blocked one shot, he kept going from
the only time he got scored on was quickly made
a step back three. But they're trying to target him
at times. I thought he contained to dribble and contested
shots one. I think he tipped. He did a good
job being is so do you know how often teams
like to hear that? And I remember twenty two points
in the fourth quarter the Nets only gave up. He
(18:39):
was part of doing a very good job defensively.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
On Twitter at BKNTS Radio, Jimmy V Hey, thanks for
being along for the ride all season long. Love you
all my NET family always will. Let's build on what
we have and remember there's still a couple of games left. Well,
maybe Jimmy was actually replying, so you were getting a
lot of replies to tweets, and that can few us
me as todd Wow. People want those red on the
(19:03):
air wow, or they're just replying to like Spencer's tweet
or something like ah I see it so But but no,
Jimmy does often. H That's why I read it, because
he does often tweet at us. But we want to
remember we still do have two games left NATA one
o six, one oh two victory over the Toronto Raptors.
(19:24):
Elsewhere in the NBA tonight, you got Cleveland beat Memphis
one ten to ninety eight and Milwaukee beat Orlando one
seventeen to ninety nine. Uh So looking at that portion
of the schedule, you know the Bucks who are without
Giannis now for the rest of the regular season. You
gotta see that calf injury if that's gonna affect him
(19:45):
in the postseason. Uh But Cleveland and Orlando, we're tied
tonight for the four spot, so Cleveland jumps ahead of them.
They're only a half game behind the Knicks, who sit
in third right now, are going to see the Knicks
on Friday night. Nick's only well, now they're a game
and a half behind the Bucks one in the lost
(20:07):
column with the Bucks winning tonight, So that's all jumbled up.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Yeah, you don't even know. I mean, I don't think
they would adjust, but you don't even know. If a
team wants to move up to the.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Well, that's yeah, that's another you know what I mean,
I don't think you know, karma police always gets you
on that.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Yeah, the basketball gods all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Yeah, I I you know, you got to figure that
out who you'd like to play, you know. Right now
it looks like the Sixers and Heat you mentioned might
be in that seven eight game.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Yeah, that's what I mean because of the Joel El
Embiid kind of you know theory right there.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
You know what you know, six is Indiana. Would you
rather play them.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
Than an Embiid sixer team?
Speaker 1 (20:47):
You know?
Speaker 3 (20:47):
But again, you're right, you gotta be careful not to
mess with the.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Just be playing well. Just be playing well and be
healthy going into the going into the postseason, and then
things will take care of themselves. That that nine ten
slot in the East, Atlanta and Chicago trying to figure
out who's gonna play where. Atlanta game behind. Atlanta loses
at home to Charlotte one fifteen to one fourteen. Trey
(21:14):
Young came back tonight and they lost, so they'll fall
a game and a half out now, so they meant
to go to Chicago for that nine to ten game
you mentioned. You know, Miami still trying well Miami. Really
they are half game behind Philly. You know who gets
that home court and that game great right there. Miami
(21:35):
lost tonight to Dallas who won eleven to ninety two.
So yeah, that'd be a great game, myth. And that's
the path Miami took last year. If you remember to
the finals only it was the the They were in
the nine to ten game and then you know, won
a game, won a second game, and then then you know,
got the upset and got to the NBA Finals. So uh,
(21:56):
they were they were close to be it. They were
down at the half in one of those playing games.
Chicago ended up winning and advancing, So you never know
where it can come from. Oklahoma City beat San Antonio one,
twenty seven to eighty nine. Oklahoma City right now still
a game behind both Minnesota and Denver trying to get
(22:18):
the top spot again would be one and maybe Warriors.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
I think it's fast. I think this is this is
a great end of the season right now.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
To think about years ago, when there wasn't the playing,
you wouldn't be talking about this is a lot of
fun to be talking about this down the stretch. What's
going on? You got games, you got the playing tournament
next week. It's really good for the game, really enjoyable.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Minnesota and Denver actually playing each other tonight, they're at
the end of the first quarter. Minnesota twenty eight, Denver
twenty six. Final game on the schedule is Phoenix against
the Los Angeles Clippers. Clippers probably going to be the
four slided right in there, Dallas actually one tonight they're
two back of the Clippers. That four or five. It
(23:03):
looks like it's gonna be Clippers Dallas. Now that's gonna
be fun, a really good series there. Phoenix is a
game behind New Orleans right now for that six seven.
That's big.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
That is big. You don't want to if you're a Phoenix,
you don't.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Play and come on, no so so lots to to
see Nets will be a part of it over the
last two games, because you know, whatever the Knicks decide
to do as far as who they play or how
hard they go after that game, it still is going
to mean something moving up or down to the standings
on Friday night, and then the Nets will play the
Sixers on Sunday, which could still mean whether or not
(23:39):
the Sixers, you know, get to the sixth spot, or
do they drop down to eighth and have to go
on the road in the seven eight games, so still
a lot to be determined. Are Maxit Telecom player of
the game brought to you by Maxit Telecom, proud partner
of the Brooklyn Nets capr Let you do the honors
as always.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
As much as you know, I'm not gonna go short,
I'm gonna go Noah Clowney. This is ability to reject
that end of game rejection after the turnover.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
I love Noah clown seven blocks seven, but that's again
a lot of rejection, and I know reject.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
You've got a lot of player I heard on the
on Yes Network tonight.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Yeah, from my consecutive, my consecutive again, thank you Frank
