Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hey, what's going on. It's Chris Carrino.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
This is the voice of the Nets, joined by my
longtime radio partner Tim Capstraw and Lucas Kaplan Nets Daily.
If you're a diehard net fan and I and you
know who you are, you you must be tuned in
to NETS Daily. Anything that happens in net world, you're

(00:31):
gonna find it on nets Daily.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Uh. They do an unbelievable job.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
To think that that started out as just basically like
a little fan site thing. We talked about Bob uh
John Schumann, Schuman and Robert.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
It started that years ago.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Chris.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
Yeah, we're three years into our NBA, our Nets Nets
time together and uh boy, that's become really smart.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
I think Robert is one of the great GM in
New York sports.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I mean his talent evaluation and his development of young
talent and NETS Daily guys that we've seen Matt Brooks
my poach.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, you're talking You're not talking about You're not talking
about his evaluation of NBA players. You're talking abouts he
brings in the work from exactly.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
He's one of the great gms in the in the
New York area.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yes, and and Lucas Kaplan is right here.

Speaker 5 (01:30):
Great transition, great transition. Thank you guys for having me
on again. And shout out to Bob.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Of course, and and John Schuman, the original who is
down and.

Speaker 6 (01:40):
The Legend, John Schumer.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
The Legend. Yes, the shoe.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
We're gonna get into Cam Johnson right now. Now, we're
we're kind of Internally we've kind of dubbed this series
of podcasts on the players that are still remaining on
the team this year, the Holdovers, the guy who are
still here, And it reminds me of the great movie

(02:05):
in twenty twenty three they got a lot of Oscar
nominations and a lot of Oscar attentions called Beholdovers with
Paul Giamatti. I know, Capri's one of your probably best
of twenty twenty three movies.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Yeah, yeah, especially because I saw two movies that year.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Well, but basically the premise is that a bunch of
kids at a boarding school high school. They it's it's
it's winter break, but there's a handful of guys that
their parent for whatever reason, they have to remain at
the school.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
And then.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
What happens is, as you can a few days in
one of the guys fathers, like comes and goes to
take the kid skiing, and he brings like everybody with him,
but one kid couldn't get in touch with his parents,
so he has to stay with Paul Giamatti and the
staff there. But it ends up being a life changing

(03:03):
experience for them. I mean, it's a terrific film if
everybody wants to see it.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
But Cam Johnson.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Is like, he may end up being one of the
guys that go skiing, right, because we don't know if
Cam Johnson's going to stay the rest of the year here,
so he's one of the holdovers, but he may be
a guy that Sean Marks can use to be more

(03:31):
in line with the timeline and.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
The rebuild here.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
What we've seen of Cam Johnson in the past and
what we know about him and his character. I don't
think it's out of the realm of possibility that we
see the Cam Johnson the promise, what we saw in
the playoffs couple of years ago, Like we see that
guy again this year.

Speaker 6 (03:54):
Yeah, I mean the other the thing about his season,
he got.

Speaker 5 (03:56):
Slowed down by a lot of various injury that may
not have kept him out for months at a time,
but a couple of games here, a couple of weeks there.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Just enough to disrupt the flow.

Speaker 6 (04:07):
Hard to get a rhythm and we and we saw.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Him in the playoffs against Philadelphia two years ago where
I thought he was the net best player, you know,
like he he showed a toughness where that Dunky had,
Like that's the guy you want to see. And whether
or not it's you know, to raise his trade value
or what he becomes helps this team win games this year,
Like I don't know. I'm I'm curious and excited to

(04:32):
see where Cam Johnson moves on to that listen.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
I think a great point with the injuries last year
because that that that stands out to me. He he
he's the kind of guy that if he doesn't go anywhere,
Chris and I think the Nets have a couple of
these guys that when you have a young organization, it's
really important to have mature pros that really get it

(04:57):
to understand everything around young new NBA players. I think
he's perfect in that regard. You think like he had
an offseason, but I mean, I guess the standards and
then he had a pretty good he had a good contract,
so that always plays there.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
I mean, he set the bar.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
He raised the bar for himself when he first got
to the Nats and then the contract he signed him,
and he set the bar high for himself.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Yeah right, And it came off the playoffs and he
was aggressive and he was going still shot thirty nine
percent from three, he still shot the ball well. I
remember saying a couple of times he wasn't playing as
much and he would go into the game and it'd
have an edge to him, and.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
I'd say, I like angry Cam Johnson. I like him
a lot. I think he's got to play. That edge
becomes an important factor for him. He can't be.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
I don't love when he's a spectator. I love when
he's totally involved. He's intense, he's focused, and he's ticked off.
That's when he's a really effective player because he compliments
that with an all around game. You know, I'll obviously
his shooting, but he's got great size, he can attack
the basket. He played, he's certainly his positional defense is

(06:10):
very good, and I think there's you know, he's a
class guy. He is an important guy to having an organization.
If he's with the Nets or if he's with somebody else.

Speaker 5 (06:21):
Yeah, I love that you pointed out his edge and aggression.
The thing that I always remember about that Philly series.
He was the guy completely unafraid of attacking Embiid at
the rim. Embiid a great rim protector, obviously, but you
can't let that dissuade you from trying to get points
in the paint. And Cam Johnson was the guy that

(06:41):
was like, I'm going to the free throw line, I'm
going to the rim. He had the dunk, but he
had a lot of finishes in the paint. And what
you said about Cam is true. And there just aren't
a lot of guys in the NBA that are six's
eight six ' nine will shoot forty percent from three
or close to it every year and be in the
right spots all the time and guard their guy on defense.

(07:03):
It again, is not the most flashy skill set, is
not the It is not the one that produces a
ton of highlights.

Speaker 6 (07:11):
But it's not that common either.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
You know, his floor as a player is always going
to be pretty high just because of what he brings
to the floor.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
I think the better the team, the better the player
he is. I think I think he needs to be
a fifth Beatle on the lineup. Sometimes out there, you know,
the ball finds him and he's to go around a
real lot of talent, and he just can knock down
shots and make plays and be solid all around. I
think I think there's gonna be a lot of those
teams that are upper echelon teams trying to trying to

(07:44):
pursue him during this season, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Yeah, And maybe for this NET team right now, he
becomes more of a guy they're going to have to
rely on in that regard and we'll see if he
can grow into that role. Or Yeah, like you said,
a good team out there looking for a guy that
can fill out their roster.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Absolutely not their roster, they're their starting lineup.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
I think there's not yeah or yeah, and and and
with this NET team, like you said, an adult in
the room, you know, because Cam Johnson is just a
fantastic person. You know, can't say enough about when he's
in a setting with fans or it has to be

(08:23):
out in the community and teammates. I mean, just a
very engaging person and a basketball family. And you know,
we'll see what happens this year. Like I said, will
he get in the helicopter and and go on the
skiing trip, or is he going to stick it out
with Paul g and Mahdi and help everyone there find

(08:45):
their place in the world.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
I missed your stories so well. You're an analogy or
whatever you call them. That it's unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Do you like my beard that I'm going with?

Speaker 3 (08:57):
I love your beard.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
I mean, I provel was maybe a little awkward. I'm
sorry about that.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
That may be a holdover from the summer. I started
not shaving in the summer, and I think I might.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Be really good with it.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
I hate to say, you look really good with the
big old edge, like you might take me out if
I say the wrong thing during a game.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Like.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
Give me.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Lucas Kaplan, Tim Capstraw Lucas of Nets Daily, Tim Capstraw
Daily with the Nets the Iron Man. We finished last
year the last day of the regular season in Philadelphia
with your your overnight.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Was it nineteen hundred right, Capra.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Yeah, nineteen hundred games in a row?

Speaker 2 (09:41):
Executive count Yeah, well we were counting, yes, producer Frank
the Grace counts and lets us know the number, because
you're too modest to come up with that number on
your own.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
Not everything. It's going to be counted. Man, that's what
I say.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
Lucas is gonna do stats on you this year.

Speaker 6 (09:58):
There's a there's a wealth of bars being dropped, numbers.
I'm I'm just soaking it up.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah, sports jackets, beards.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Outfit outfits.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Yeah, there are a lot of things we can keep
track of, and we will and we'll continue where our
holdover series of of the Nets as we get you
ready for training camp and the twenty twenty four twenty
twenty five season coming up. Thanks to Lucas Kaplan, Tim Capstraw,
I'm Chris Conrino. This is the voice of the Nets.
