Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey, what's going on. It's Chris Carino and this is
the voice of the NETS podcast. We are joined by
my radio partner, longtime radio partner and friend, Tim Catstraw,
Lucas Kaplan of NETS Daily and you can see his
work NETS Digital side, some player play breakdowns and things
like that. Really good stuff coming up throughout the year

(00:30):
from Lucas Kaplan. Glad to have this little dream team
assembled as we continue to go through the holdovers from
a year ago, the guys that were on the NETS
team last year who are a big piece going forward
as we get ready for training camp and the start
of pre season. At the trade deadline, one of the
NETS moves was to move Spencer Dinwoodie to Toronto in

(00:52):
exchange for Thaddeus Young and Dennis Shrewder. Spencer Dinwoody ended
up in Los Angeles with the Lakers daddyas Young did
not rejoin the Nets, but Dennis Shooter did and Shooter
has become an elder statesman now in the NBA. The

(01:12):
former seventeenth pick way back in twenty thirteen by the
Atlanta Hawks not only became a leader of the NET
team late in the year, but he was coming off
a year where he led the German national team to
a World Cup championship in which he was the key
piece and the leader of that team, and then he

(01:35):
did the same in their run through the Olympics this
year didn't get as far, but ran into the Dream
Team or the newest incarnation of the Dream Team. But
certainly Dennis Schuter has taken on that elder statesman role
with a really good young German national team with some
really good stars on that team. But as far as
what he's going to be with the Brooklyn Nets, besides

(01:57):
being a player who was the first Nets player ever
to have the umlot on the on the name Joe Cuomo,
the Nets equipment manager uh and more had to put
those two dots over the oh. He was this brash
young player that came in Cabra. What what stood out

(02:21):
to you about Dennis Shrewder when you got a chance
to see him night in night out. You know, guys
look different to us sometimes when we see him once
or twice or a couple of times a year in person,
but then when you see him every day, you learn
a little bit more about them.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Well, I think it's interesting when you're when you're talking
about his his career because.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
I remember, you know, watching him around the league. I thought,
I thought speed and and you know and and all
those qualities. You know, he could really he could really accelerate,
make plays. This dynamic pick and roll coming up and
you see some of that. But I, you know, ages
caught up to him a little bit, and like a
lot of guys though, he said, apted and become a

(03:01):
much better three point shooter. He's got a good feel.
He's been consistently above forty percent, around forty percent of
the last three four years. He's improved dramatically there. He
he's you know, he can set up teammates pretty well.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
He's got a good feel.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
He does have good leadership qualities, you know. But you know,
size at the guard position becomes a big deal. You know,
not being big and not having a physical presence can
be you know, can hurt you in the half board
and sometimes you know, make things difficult. But listen, I
think he's a good player. He's been on an awful
lot of teams lately, and he's gone through the NBA.

(03:40):
But he's a good player, and I think he likes
being in Brooklyn. I thought he performed well over twenty
nine games, and yet you know, you wonder, you know what,
you know, what's the big picture for Dennis shooter with
the nets. That's hard to say, but you want him
to duplicate what he can do with FIBA in the Olympics,
because he's been terrific with the German team nets for sure.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Yeah, the flag bearer for Germany the Olympics this year,
fourth place finish for Germany, Lucas. You know that he
did really shoot it incredibly well when he got to
the nets. I mean he had a stretch. I don't
remember exactly the numbers, but he had this stretch where

(04:25):
he was just shooting the lights out when he first
got to the nets. And I think that is something
that has evolved with his game over the years.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Yeah, absolutely, I mean he could not miss you know,
those pull up threes. That was the real impressive part.
A lot of it was off the dribble, you know,
when guys would go under screens. But the sneaky thing
that happened with him is that, again small sample sized
twenty nine games, the mid range shot that he does
rely on left him a little bit in Brooklyn, and

(04:56):
so I would expect that to normalize as well in
a full season upcoming. But I think ever hit the
nail on the head, the size limits him, right. But
other than that, I mean, the guy breaks the paint
ten toes and the paint and it's a guard that
a lot of teams want because you can trust him

(05:16):
to break down that first level and then make the
correct decision. Now, you know, he might not offer the
same offensive value as some of these true primary stars
in the league, but he's going to create corner threes.
How many lobs did we see him throw? And just
dunks he created for the biggs.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
It is a player that whatever Jordan Fernandez wants from
this archetype, you know that we know very well, this
downhill driving point guard, this guy's going to create the
right decisions for them. And so this is the other side.
You know, Dennis has been on a lot of teams
in a lot of years because this type of player
is in demand, and he's talked about how that's not

(05:59):
maybe not rough on him or or not ideal, but
you know, it's certainly a challenge moving all over the
place all the time, and talked about how you would
like to plant some roots in Brooklyn. So for all
those reasons. I'm excited to keep getting to know you know,
Dennis the player as well as you know the person,
and so definitely going to be an exciting year to
watch watch.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Yeah, Nick Claxton benefited, Uh, definitely ben as shooter last year.
We saw it in his first game shooter through that
out of bounce pass to Claxon at the rim. That
was exciting and you just see what he can be.
And yeah, I don't you know, again, we don't know. Uh,
as the season goes along, as you get to the

(06:40):
trade deadline, you know, he's another asset. You know, he's
another player that is on a on a very manageable
contract who could be a good veteran presence for a
team that needs it, maybe a team that's you know,
postseason bound. And especially I think his his play internationally
with the the national team, I think showed you a

(07:03):
little bit of hey, this guy can be a leader
with good young players, you know. I think his reputation
took a little bit of a hit with his time
with the Lakers, which has tended to happen, I think
with there's a few other examples of that where guys
have gone and maybe just didn't just didn't fit in

(07:25):
with the stars there and then got that rep of
well they maybe they can't play on a good team
or with star players. I think he's a guy that
showed that, you know, playing with the the Wagner brothers
and things like that, Like he can be that elder statesman,
that good veteran leader who can lead young players, and
that's certainly something his value just you know, we talk

(07:49):
about his abilities and his skills, but his ability and
his kind of being a coach on the floor is
valuable when you're talking about mentoring young players like the
Nets have this year.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
That's a great call, I mean, and you see that
in Jordi Fernandez, first year head coach.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
He's gonna want to have a guy like that. It
takes pride in Net and.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
He's you know, again, his game has evolved, his personalities involved,
and you're absolutely right about the leadership. And the Nets
have so many young players that they're going to be
counting on the play a lot of minutes and they're
going to be out on the floor. His leadership will be.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
His influence on a guy like Cam Thomas is something
I'm interested to see because we talked about I think Cam,
You're gonna get a lot of playing through Cam, obviously,
and we talked about how Cam's going to see a
lot of double teams try and get out of his hands.
How Cam manages to play with a true lead guard

(08:43):
like Dennis Shooter is and you know, can Cam be
that lead guard? I don't know. I'm curious to see
how they play together.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
Definitely, And you know, Dennis is the best year of
his career probably came in Oklahoma City and there was
another young guard, Shaye Gill Alexander and you know Chris
Paul there as well, not that he was particularly young
and okay, see, but they had a lot of guards
that you would expect to maybe not mesh, maybe all

(09:11):
require the ball and dance at the top of the
key and use pick and roll, but that it was
a very overachieving team and that played very well and
Dennis was a big part of that. And you know,
obviously that bodes well for the way he can play
with other guards, especially ones that may you know, not
need some mentoring, but are not at the point in

(09:34):
their NBA career that Dennis is. And obviously that's Cam Thomas,
so I you know, he's not just going to be
this backup guard plays a couple minutes a game and
then stands in the corner when he's with cam Thomas,
it you would hope, you know, it's a symbiotic relationship
where both guys can extract value from it and you

(09:55):
know Dennis can teach us, teach him some tricks of
the trade.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Also the fact that, again we talked about his shooting ability,
how it's improved.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
I love the way shooter holds this fall through. He
holds his follow through extremely well, and he's shot the
ball consistently well, whether it be the last three or
four NBA seasons into FEBA, into the Olympics, he's become
a very good shooter. So Cam Thomas making plays and
and being on the other side of that, he'll.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Stretch the defense and certainly if the ball ends up
in his hands, he can comfortably knock it down.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Dennis Shrewder with the umlat thirty one years old, now
venturing in an Elder Statesman territory in the NBA. Moving forward,
the nets holdovers as we get you set toward training
camp and looking forward to the twenty four to twenty
five season. Tim Capstraw my radio partner Lucas Kaplan of
nets Daily and the nets Digital Side. Check out his stuff.
