Speaker 1 (00:03):
What's up his way up for Angela Yee, and look who's
in the building today. Devin Haney's here. Thank you for
stopping through, Thank you for having me. So I wanted
to start this off with something that your dad put
on social media. He put Devin Haney the new standard
by age twenty six, He said, no fighter in modern
boxing history has achieved what Devin Haney has by the
age of twenty six, undefeated, thirty two and OH undisputed champion,

(00:27):
two division world champion, beat seven world champions, beat three
unified champions, beat a former pound for pound number one Lomachenko,
and self promoted with his father outside major promoter systems.
Who else has done this by age twenty six? Do
you feel like people nowadays, and I know you've said
that being the bad guy does pay, but do you
feel like people aren't even like thinking about those things

(00:48):
because of the Ryan Garcia fight.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
I think that, you know, in the moment, people don't
they don't really care about the stats, so they don't
really like, they don't really like realize. But you know,
maybe when I'm long gone or you know, I'm retired
or whatever, then maybe they'll give me, you know, they
will realize, you know, the type of stuff that I'm
doing in the sport that you know nobody is doing.

(01:12):
You know that people will look back on it and
be like, oh, Devin Any was this, he was that?
So I mean, but right now I'm just in the moment.
So I'm just I want to just keep you know,
accomplishing as much as I can, keep beating the best
fighters you know, in the world, and eventually, you know,
when I'm when it's time to kick my feet up,
then I could, you know, really look at my accomplishments

(01:35):
and say, you know, give myself the credit.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
Sometimes I think people forget how young you still are
because you started so young as far as being in
the public eye, like doing things that people hadn't done
before them, even changing the rules for you to even
be able to fight.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, they don't really compare me to a lot of
the twenty six year olds because you know, they just
forget at the end of the day, a lot of
the twenty six year olds are you know, still on
a come up date. They're like, you know, prospects, we
got prospects as twenty six. You know, some guys come

(02:11):
out Olympics at twenty six, you know, so they're barely
just turning pro. But I am the new standard. So
I'm happy to be the the I'm younger and everybody,
all these guys, all the champions, everybody except for one,
but by far the most accomplished out of the young guys.
But that's what I set out to do. So I'm

(02:33):
happy to that I was able to, and I just
want to keep my foot on the gas and keep
accomplishing more and more. Well.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
November twenty second, Saudi Arabia is the Night of Champions.
You versus Brian Norman Junior. This is definitely his biggest
fight of his career against you. What made him the
most viable opponent at this time.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yeah, I mean the fight that I really wanted was
the Ryan Garcia fight.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
He wants that too, Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
That was what it was all set up for. You know,
we were we were both signed to do that fight,
and uh then he lost to Roy and that trump
that fight, and then the next best guy was was
Tea Femo. I was signed, ready to go, uh to
do that fight, and then he backed out of negotiations.
He said it, you know, it wasn't something that he

(03:18):
wanted to do. So the next best guy was was
Brian Norman. He's the best guy I want forty seven
right now, and I'm going up and wait, I'm going
up to the way class that he's at. So once
I beat him, then I become the top dog. I
become you know, the I go. I'm back on the throne,
you know where I once was, and that's that's what's

(03:40):
most important to me. You know, I want to be
champion again, and I just want to be the guy
in the division.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Do you feel like you're not on it?

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Because you said back on the throne, So this is
something to you that you feel like you really have
to prove something. This is a major because it has
to go the way.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
That you needed to go when I said, I mean
like just as as champion. You know right now I'm
not champion right because I'm you know, are released my
belt at one forty, so you know now I'm not champion.
So now I still got the you know, the challenger mentality.
I'm back to that and I got to go beat
the champion. And Brian Norman is a champion right now.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
So yeah, when you're when you're paying attention to what
people say because moving up and wait. People get concerned like,
are you going to be able to move as quickly
as you are when you're lighter. They also talk about
how impactful his punches are, and you know, throughout your
career people have said, well, Devin Haney's fast, but are
his punch is going to land like that he's Is
he going to be able to knock him out? What

(04:34):
are some of the things that you think about when
you're preparing for this fight, Because I know you said
it's kind of he's had these matches that have been
strategically designed for him to get to where he is now.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
We've you know, uh, it's a new weight class, so
it's it's everything is different. You know, we're going to
see you know, if I'm stronger, I from weaker, if
may maybe I could take a punch better because you know,
I don't have to cut as much. Wait, it's a
lot of it's a lot of variables that play into
this fight, and that's why it's it's so important. That's

(05:06):
why it's a good fight for people to watch because
they want to they need to see. You know, they
said before, we don't know if he can take a punch.
You know, we don't know if he can take a
left hook. Well, we've seen Brian Norman knock a guy
out and his last fight cold with a left hook,
so you know he's he's strong. Everything that they say that,

(05:27):
you know, it's kryptonite to to Devin Haney, he has right.
So now we gotta see, you know, we gotta see
if it's really kryptonite or if it's really boxed, if
it's really just you know, them trying to you know,
make these narratives and you know, these people coming up
with this, with with with this, with just this bullshit.
So we gotta see. That's why, that's why this fight

(05:50):
is is. I love this fight for me because it's
a lot of it's a lot of doubters. But when
I win, uh, I'm gonna get my credit.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Yeah, you're gonna go back in the comments and talk
to people like you.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
We're gonna let Bill Haynes do that.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
In the perfect world, I wouldn't do that. I would
like in my mind, I want to do that. I
want to do that, but no, I wouldn't do that.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
You know.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Interestingly enough, your last fight against Jose Ramirez, people talk
about that and when I'm looking at that how do
you respond when people are like it seemed like he
was nervous. The amount of punches that were thrown was
a lot less. I think they said it was the
fourth least in compy box history.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Yeah, I mean, like I said, every fight is different,
every every weight class is different. You know, I don't
fight everybody the same. Every fight I trained specifically for
you know that guy, and I go in there with
a game plan for that guy. So that was a
game plan that Gas Ramirez. The Lumma fight was different
game plan, and Ryan fight was different game plan. So

(06:50):
every fight, you know, the game plan is different. And
now you got to see what game plan I bring
to this fight with with Brian Norman, because you know.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
People be thinking about like excite and they want to see.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah, I think that with with with the styles. You know,
they say that Brian Norman is strong, they say that
he's you know, he's fast, he's this, he's that. Well,
maybe he'll make me draw me into that fight that
you guys you don't want to see. Maybe it'll be
an action packed fight because if he's this here, if
he's everything that y'all say he is, then he'll do

(07:24):
that easily. It won't be it won't be hard for
it to be an exciting fight because Brian Norman is
a monster.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Well that's good.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
You're given at least given him his Perhaps you guys
ran into each other too, What was that like?

Speaker 2 (07:39):
I mean, he ran into each other?

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Do y'all know we know each other?

Speaker 2 (07:43):
I don't. I don't. I don't, I don't know. I
don't know him. No, I don't know him. This is
I just barely found out who he was. I seen him,
I seen him in the gym before, but he really
wasn't on my radar before. But you know, he became
champ being he he made some noise in his last fight,
and now this is a fight that a lot of people,

(08:07):
you know, are paying attention to, and you know, it's
a fight that I'm excited for.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
So yeah, it's interesting because I've known you a long
time and it's been it feels like the tides really
changed with the Ryan Garcia And when you look back
at like a lot of things that were happening before
that fight, like him missing weight and just a lot
of drama, do you feel like maybe was there ever
an intuition that was like maybe I should not do this,

(08:37):
you know what I'm saying, because there were a lot
of things that happened that felt like I don't know
if we believe in like bad luck or just like
maybe there's a sign telling me this is not a
good idea when you look back. Because then we did
find out that he was taking osteen and people still
downplay that too, like they'll act like that was no
big deal.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
It was a small amount. It didn't affect anything.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
I believe in all so, I believe in, you know, God,
and I believe that a lot is a perfect planner.
So you know, I don't want to say, you know,
it was like an intuition thing, but it was a
lot of signs.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
Yeah, there was a lot going on that it was
like because you could have said I'm not doing this,
and you would have been well within your rights to
do that.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah. I mean at times I did say that. I
did say that, like, you know, like it just didn't
make sense. Yeah, it just at times it was just
like it wasn't added up. And you know in that fight,
we were before the fight, we were like we were
projected to make a lot more money than what we did.
But Brian, you know, started with his antics and it

(09:38):
just got a lot of people turned off from the fight.
So it wasn't even like we even like made crazy
money like we were supposed to.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
So I think they were saying thirty six million or
something like that. It was yeah, I'm just trying.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Yeah, yeah, no that it was. It was supposed to
make that. I'll be see, we make we make good money,
but we just we didn't make thirty six million dollars.
So yeah, no, it was just a lot of science
that where I could have just said, you know what,
it's not it's not the time, it's not the fight whatever.
But like I said, I love perfect planners. So it happened.

(10:17):
I learned a lot in that fight. I learned a
lot about myself.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
What did you learn, would you say?

Speaker 2 (10:22):
I mean, you never know, you never know somebody can
take a punch until they get hit, you know, And
you know I got hit against a guy who was
on PDS and I got back up every time. You know,
I showed my heart, you know, I showed my I
showed my grid.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
And I've never seen you in that position before.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, I'm sure I've never been in that position. I've
never been in that position before. So, like I said,
that's why I said, I learned so much about myself
being being in that and being in that moment. And
you know, even after the fight, you know, I learned
about I learned a lot, so about so much people
you know around me, people around me, you know, the media,
the box, promoters, to business.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Of box, even other boxers too, even other boxers, because
he was saying all kind of wild, like racist stuff,
and I was like, we're okay with.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
This, Like yeah, like I said, you know, everything, you know,
everything happens for a reason. And I just learned so
much from from that fight. And I learned more in
that fight than I did. You know, I think I
would say pretty much from all my victories, Like I
learned so much you know in the ring, you know,
leading about my training camps, you know, just things that

(11:29):
I was doing wrong leading up to the fight. I
changed a lot, and I'm happy about it.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
So Brian Norman Junior, better watch out, because yeah, I
mean you changed a lot from that.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
I can't even imagine.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Mentioning as a monster. They say he's a monster.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
So I can't even imagine like all the things that
you went through after that because it was like a circus,
you know, just everything that happened. It's interesting to me
that you would give him the chance to fight again, Like,
after everything that happened, you feel like you still want
to prove if everything's on the up and up I can.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yeah, well, it's a lot of you know, unanswered questions
in that fight. It's still it's still a big fight.
But I want to right my wrongs in that fight.
I'm sure he wants to. He want to prove that
it wasn't PDS or whatever, which it was, but he
wants to prove that, you know, that PDS didn't matter.
I want to prove that, you know, PDS do matter,

(12:22):
and that I'm I'm a far more better fighter than him.
And like I said, it's just it's just unfinished basiness.
It's just question marks on that fight, and the world
wants to see that fight. So I think that's one
of the biggest fights in boxing, and it's gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
At some point.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
Yeah, you know, it's interesting watching everything that's happening with
boxing right now, seeing these Netflix fights that people have
been doing. We also see Flood Mayweather and Manny Paciow.
Is that something you think now you would be interested
in seeing.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Yeah, I mean, of course I would, definitely I would.
What I say is it's one of the best fights
in boxing. No, but what is it an entertaining fight
people want to see? You know what Floyd is gonna
show up? What man, he's gonna show up. We haven't
seen Floyd in years, like, you know, in a real fight. So, uh,

(13:13):
it's it's definitely an intriguing fight. And I'm a tune
in for sure.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
What about Gavante Davis versus Jake Paul? Is that something? Yeah,
because that's that's a mass up. To me, that's a
little strains because of the weight difference.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
And yeah, I don't I don't know, Like I'm a
tune in for sure all of this. Yeah, I'm a
tune in. But it's just like I don't know how
it's gonna work, Like I don't know what the fuck
because he's just so he's just so much. Jake is
so much bigger than Tank. But Tank has way more
experienced taking in boxing since he was a little kid.

(13:46):
So it's still an intriguing fight even though it's not
it's not a real fight, it's exhibition.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
You're still gonna. Yeah, you're entertained by it. Would you
want to see Clarisa Schells versus Leila Ali? And when
you look at that whole situation, what are your thoughts
on Laila?

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Not really?

Speaker 1 (14:02):
You know, Clarissa got the money together and said we
could do this, but then Laila seems like she's not
really No.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
I love I love Layla. Uh. You know I've been
I've been a fan of a fan of her since
I was a young kid. I watched her growing up.
She's a legend. But she needs to stay away. You
need to stay away from Fisa, stay away from her.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
And you know, one thing about you is that you're
not duck in those.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
How old is Leila?

Speaker 1 (14:29):
I know you know Crystal, she's looking at it. Okay,
she's gonna look it up for us. Yeah, it's just
interesting because I understand what you're saying because maybe now
it's not the time forty seven, Yeah, it's find the
time is undefeated, like you could want to, you know,
because when you think about for yourself having started when
you did, like if you have to give yourself a

(14:49):
number of when you plan to stop boxing, when do
you think?

Speaker 2 (14:53):
I don't know, I got I gotta just see, I
gotta see you know how my body feels. But I got,
I got, I got a while. I feel great. Yeah,
even even though you know, I got a lot of fights,
you know, at a young age, for sure, at least
ten years for sure. Yeah, definitely, at the least at
the least ten years. But you know, I just want

(15:15):
to make sure I do the right things outside of
the sport, you know, make the right investments. You know.
I want to make sure that I'm able to be
there for my daughter, you know. And also you know
how my money I won't to make make sure my
money is right to be able to take like live
a good life after boxing.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
So yeah, investments are important. What are things that you're
doing outside.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Of real estate? Real estate is the most important thing,
is the easiest thing, you know. I'm like, I don't
be trusting people like that.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
So you know, it's funny you say real estate because
I do real estate too. But I find real estate
is a lot more work than say stocks, as far
as having to pay attention and do things because you
know people. I do think diversity is important, like stocks,
real estate, you know, different things.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Also, Yeah, I don't really know about the stocks that much.
I just like, from what I heard, I just feel
like it's like it's very it's a lot like gambling,
like to be honest, even though I mean obviously I'm
not educated enough on you know, with stocks, but it's
too much like gambling, like with you know, with real estate,
like you know.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
What you know, well, not necessarily because anything could also.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Go left, for sure.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
I mean, everything's a gamble. Nothing is like a given.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
But I do feel like it's something to learn more
and be more comfortable with because it is a nice
it's it's diverse, it's a good like when I have this,
I'm gonna put X amount into my stocks and just
set that and forget it for like long term and retirement.
Because you do have a daughter and you got to
think about, you know, setting her up for later in
life too, and setting up like plans for her financial
plans so that she's good, you know forever. How has

(16:48):
been a girl? Dad changed you?

Speaker 2 (16:50):
Yeah, I mean I wouldn't say it really changed me
at first. You know it was in the beginning it
was a bit hard.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
You know we've seen yeah, yeah, we've seen it.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Yeah, it's a bit hard, but everything is you know
under control now, So I'm happy about it. You know,
I've been able to spend you know, time with my
daughter and be with her, and you know, she's a blessing,
you know, you know, our lives answered my prayers for that,
you know, because that was that was the most important
thing to me. You know, she's being able to spend
time and you know, be with her and you know,

(17:24):
and cherish these moments that you know, watching her grow.
So you know, now that I'm able to do that,
you know, I'm happy about it.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
And are you? So you're in a good space now.
You guys have worked everything out. I know it bothers
you to have all that online because that's not even.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
You know, yeah, the vibe that Devin Haney's on like yeah,
you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
At the end of the day, me and my my
daughter's mother, we got, you know, eighteen years to deal
with each other. So I'm happy that we came to understanding.
And no, I got nothing, but I got nothing but
love for her, and uh, you know I want her to,
you know, just make sure that she's a good mom
to my daughter. And uh, you know, I'm forever gonna

(18:07):
you know, look out for her, make sure she's straight
longest you know, she doing what she's supposed to do,
you know, for my daughter what she is.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
And yeah, so when you're thinking ahead, there's a lot
of people already that are like throwing their hat in
the ring as far as after winning this fight, that
want to fight you. If you could chart things out
and be like, okay, you know the twenty after the
night of the twenty second in Saudi Arabia and this
is is this on his owne y? Yeah, okay, so
it's on his zone on the twenty second, if you

(18:35):
had to map it out, Okay.

Speaker 3 (18:37):
What's next?

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Because I see people already talking about I'm going to
fight them, you know, the winner of this, and I
see a lot of predictions.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
It's funny because all these guys, these guys that's that's,
you know, saying that they want the winner or whatever.
They wasn't calling for Brian Norman before this. You know,
before this fight, nobody was calling Brian normous name. He
had a crazy knockout whatever, nobody was saying his name.
So now now now that you know I'm fighting him,
now they want to say, oh, they want to win
or whatever the case may be. But I think the

(19:08):
you know, I want, I want to make sure that
Ryan Garcia is clean, he's you know, doing his drug
tests in whatever case may be. Uh, maybe he could
a win and then we go into that fight because
that's like I said, that's just that's the fight that
I want, because it's just it's just like I said,
this question marks there and uh, I want to write that.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Wrong right now.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
It feels like you definitely have a vendetta against that situation. Yeah,
how has training this time around been different for you?
I saw you've been going to like I think, Denver.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
Yeah, I wasn't. I was in Denver for training camp.
Training camp has been going great. I feel so much
better now that I'm fighting at one forty seven. I
went up in Waight, and uh, I feel so much stronger.
Don't have to cut that much, don't have to focus
on on losing weight. You know, a lot of times
my training camps was based around strictly just you know,
cutting weight, you know, trying to trying to train as

(19:56):
hard as I can so that I can lose weight.
So now I can focus on skills. I feel a
lot more, I'm a lot more happier. Everything is just
you know, way better, you know, and I've been I
was supposed to go up to one forty seven for
a long time. I was supposed to be at this
weight class for a long a long time ago, but
it just was so much at stake At one thirty five,

(20:16):
you don't fight for undisputed defending undisputed, And then one
forty it was another opportunity there fighting Regis and then
the Ryan Garcia fight, So it was just like every
it was like a lot of opportunities for me at
those small at those smaller weights. But I'm just a
bigger guy, and one forty seven is where I should
have been for a while.

Speaker 3 (20:33):
Yeah. No, I'm looking.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
You know I'm gonna be You already know I'm gonna
be locked in. I wish I could be in Saudi Arabia,
Yeah for sure. So for as far as the events
that are happening out there, have you been You've been
in Saudi Arabia before, Okay, And I know this is
like the new thing too, because people are talking about
I think, is this the same promoter as it did
the fight you did, the last.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
Fight you had, yes, New York. Yeah, are okay? Okay,
So this is like, yeah, so.

Speaker 2 (20:58):
It's crazy they do is crazy.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
Yeah, I know it is because people talk about that
side the Ria, that Saudi Arabia money.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
I see the comedy festivals going on out there.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
And yeah, I mean yeah, you're like, yes, event like,
like they always do. They always pull on the craziest
he wants, as you said. As you said, they always
pay the craziest. Yeah. Yeah, I'm excited for it.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
I feel like boxing is in a good space right now.
There was a period of time when it felt like
it was a little for sure, and even though there's
things going on that I'm like, Okay, this is different,
this is different. It does feel like there's exciting boxers,
you know. I was I was telling I did go
see Clarissa Shells fighting Detroit, and then I went to
go see Boots fight in Atlantic City and in Philly,

(21:47):
and I think he's amazing. And that's the potential. Your
dad had him on the list of people he would
like to see you massed up against.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
He's at one fifty four. I'll be at one fifty
four eventually. I think that that's a huge fight to
make when when the time comes.

Speaker 1 (22:01):
Your dad did a whole hit list of people he
really of course Stevenson, that would be a great one.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
It was a real list. And we've been going down
the list of guys who who who was able to
fight and whatever the case may be. And that's Brian
Norms on the list. And that's why Brian Norman is
is you know, that's why we fighting him now.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
You know, it's so much going on mentally and so
much on the line of that steak, like, how do
you clear your head from all of this extra stuff,
because I feel like you've handled things pretty well, from
people talking crazy about you, from being painted as like
the bad guy, the guy who's filing lawsuits about everything
and they act like you're just but they're legitimate right clearly.
But for some reason people are painting it as like

(22:42):
you're some you know, complaining And.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
I mean I'm built for you know, you know, God
put me in his position for a reason and you
know I'm strong enough to take whatever they throw at me.
It is what it is, you know. I just keep
it pushing and put my you know, my right foot
for it and keep it keep on going.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
You know, I'm only saying that because I really care.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
I know people close to you and we talk about it,
like how is Devin doing, Like we really discussed that
with each other because I know it's a lot.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
Yeah No, I mean, like I said, I'm built for it.
You know, I knew. I knew that what this came with.
You know, I knew what the limelight, I knew what
the money, I knew everything. You know, I knew what
this all came with. So, like I said, it is
what it is, you know, I just stay prayed up,
you know, keep God first and let it be what

(23:35):
it's going to be.

Speaker 1 (23:36):
All right, Well, November twenty second in Saudi Arabia, then
that of Champions and it's gonna be Devin Haney versus
Brian Norman Jr. And we would be tuned in on
the Zone. So thank you so much for always coming
and you know, showing some love up here.

Speaker 3 (23:47):

Speaker 2 (23:48):
