Speaker 1 (00:03):
What's up? Its way up with Angela Yee. I'm Angela Yee.
And we have a really special guest joining us today
who has a huge event that's happening. Oh you got
the shirt and everything. Yes, the Brooklyn Natural Hair Fest,
Angie pennyfeather Is Hair. What's up, Angie?
Speaker 2 (00:18):
What's up?
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Angela?
Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's been a long time.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
I know, first of all, you're very Brooklyn, okay, because
when I first was working with you, it was at
Luna Park, which is in Coney Islands, And so now
you have this Brooklyn Natural Hair Fest going on.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Absolutely, I mean, what can I say? I love Brooklyn
like I'm doing it big. I'm like jay Z, I'm
like Foxy, like it's Brooklyn. Why, Okay, I noticed. So
I'm excited to bring the Brooklyn hair culture to like
my hometown and like your hometown. Like I don't know
if you remember how the history and the legacy of
Brooklyn hair was back in the day, Like I used
(00:54):
to get my hair done on the steps. Yeah, yes, yes,
like Troy and Krookland. You remember that.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Oh my god, absolutely, that's an iconic And listen, even
prior to that, people was getting Jerry curls in the
backyard exactly, smell it on the whole block.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Smell it. And even like the oilchines and like the
hair sprays in the hair salon and being in the
hair salon for hours and hours like that was Brooklyn.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Like yeah, you know, it's the whole day. So it's
like two options. Either you make a hair appointment and
just know you're gonna be there all day. Who knows
what time your stylist is coming in. You try to
get the first appointment of the day, but she's gonna
be late and then be mad at you if you
don't wait. She's gonna call you and be like, Okay,
I'm running late, but just wait for me. Don't let
nobody else touch your hair. And then there's the other
(01:38):
washing set situation in Brooklyn where you know you go
and it's like affected, right, and then they're gonna blow
draw your hair, burn your scalp.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
You know, so yes, ready now. And also listening to
the gossip, absolutely that was Queen, Like you heard the
gossip between the silas you read the magazines, the Essence Ebony,
the Jets. That was fair and so we're honoring that
and like it's so cool. I don't know if you
notice in Brooklyn, but we're seeing women in their froze
their curls.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Oh I notice, yes, absolutely. I mean your hair looks amazing.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Thank you, thank you. This is work. Yeah, I have
a love hate relationship. We're loving today.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
I mean, look, you know, I went on like my
own natural hair journey. My hair just be a mess
every day. But I don't put any heat on my hair,
not too often, so it's okay to do it. But
it did, like for a while, I did do like
that thermal reconditioning with straighten my hair. It changed the
whole texture of my hair. Then I had to grow
that out. Then I died my hair and that changed
the texture of my hair. I had to grow that out.
(02:36):
And then just not putting heat on my hair and
trying to let my natural curls come back. I feel
like it's never been the same, but it's getting better
all the time.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
And I feel like something like that is a lot
of It's something that women are dealing with and they
have so many questions and so like on Natural Brooklyn
Natural Hair for Us Day this Sunday, we have panelists
like we have silence, we have experts. That's going to
give you all of those answer that you need, like
what's going on with my hair? Like why isn't it
curling after I just died it or did a straightening,
(03:06):
Like how can I get that curl pattern back? And
I think that's like women are so focused on this
curl pattern.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
So it is because we have been so conditioned to
straighten our hair all the time. Even if you look
at television, I remember it was a big thing to
be able to have your natural hair because they would
be like, you got it straighten your hair. People feel
like that's also a more professional look at work. And
you know, like one of my friends I went to
high school was she's an attorney and she would be
on her zooms and be like, you know, that's when
(03:34):
I got it straight in my hair. I was like,
girl'll get you a head bandwig, you know, get one
of those things so that you could just slap a
wig on and be able to be on those zooms.
But why should we have to do that? And you know,
the Crown Act is fairly recent too.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
And they're doing the word to make sure that we're protected,
but we also celebrate our hair. And I feel like
you know, you've mentioned like a lot of like back
in the days of what we were taught, Like I
used to see the dress for Me commercials and I
was like, oh, I want my hair straighten. Yes, I
don't like my hair touch shirt. And then we're like
we're talking about that, like that good and bad hair
(04:08):
like remember school days, yes, and like this time around,
we're talking about like so many times we try to
do our hair and what we see on YouTube and
Instagram and we think it's going to come out like that,
and then when it doesn't, we're like we're up set
and we don't appreciate our hair and we don't realize
that everybody has different hair. Like it's gonna come out
whatever way it comes, but like embrace it, Like my
(04:30):
curls may not come define like your curls. You know
what I mean?
Speaker 1 (04:32):
You think these are define girls? Listen, what I've learned
to do. All I do is put my hair in
a ponytail and pin it and pin it up.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
But it goes like it's tough. But like, let's start
appreciating our hair and like that's what Brooklyn Natural Hair
fust Day is about. You know, I'm so glad that
we got the days citated by the city.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
I know that's we got you. Well, I said, we
you got your day, Brooklyn Natural Hairfest Day. That's a
huge deal to you. So what day is that? Every year?
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Now it's gonna be June twenty third. Okay, yeput it
put it on your calendar. But thank you. And I
think part of it, like you're saying me, but it
is like it's a community like you everyone that's in Brooklyn,
like we did it. We did it the Brooklyn way.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
And I just also think about when I was younger
how hard it was to find the products for my
curly here, and that's why, you know what to like.
When I first started doing radio, I remember doing an
ad campaign with Miss Jesse's yea, and I remember the
biggest deal because I really used to use Miss Jesse's
and I remember going to Ricky's and that was like
(05:34):
the only products that was for curly here that I
could find at first. And now we're really blessed to
be able to have, you know, products in the stores.
And it used to also be like mad Dusty on
the bottom shelf, you know where you it couldn't even
be like by the other products true, and now we
have whole sections that's dedicated to us.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
You have no idea. When I walk into a beauty
supply store and I see it, it's like Christmas morning,
Like I'm.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Like, oh my god. And think about how many people
are now starting their own hair carelines, like we see Rihanna,
just Beyonce has doing.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
It, and like at Brooklyn Natural hair Fuster Tracy Ellis Pattern,
we have so many local Brooklyn owned, small to mid
sized businesses that are all female based, that all have
their own hair carolines. That's going to be at Brooklyn
Natural Hair Fuesers. I'm so excited to make sure that
they get their love and their support. But you're right,
(06:31):
Like I remember Miss Jesse's, Miss Jessie's is donating a
lot of products that day.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
They okay they are, and they had their salon and bedsty.
I remember shout out to shout Out.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Shout out to Meel, shout out to Lester's Paint. They're
all donating really amazing swag.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Yeah, I used Nayella all the time too, And yes,
and I love the stories of like how you can
see a lot of these are black women that started
these brands and so that's a huge deal. And even
the salons in Bedstyde because this is in Bedsdye in Brooklyn.
You know parents who works with me, she opened a salon,
yes I in Brooklyn that specializes and that it's called
(07:08):
Soft and so shout out to her.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
I sent it to her.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
You know, I'm sending it to all my friends because
I care about you things like this.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Thank you so much. I mean, we do have sophisticated
Lots salon and magic Fingers. They're going to be doing
a hair show, so they're showcasing all the top braids,
the lots, the twist that's happening at four pm. At
three pm, we have a brow demo because I always
yr growls are good. Listen again, it's a love hate relationship, okay,
(07:34):
but this we have black sheer beauty that's going to
be talking about brows.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
And I feel like browns have also changed so much.
Think about how browns used to be like super skinny.
They try to bring that back a little. I'm not
into it, never right, but now it's kind of like
the full look is really in and like even the
brushing it up, like people didn't used to do that,
and now it's a whole and I love how it looks.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Thank you. Two PM we're talking about scalp because I
always feel like this is so important because remember back
in the day, it was always like grease your scalp,
All that scalp. I mean, this scalp expert is going
to talk about that, okay, And it's like such a
misconception that we always feel like we have to be
so heavy on our scalp, that we forget that that
(08:15):
scalp is like the one that helps to grow our hair, right,
it hasnatch oils exactly, it has oils already, So why
are we being so heavy with that? And so it's
gonna be such an eye opener.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
What about edge repair, because you know, a lot of
us got our edges ripped out just from having the
braids and the weaves. That's really important too, And I
think about how it does hurt your confidence when you
have like ball patches in your head or when your scalps,
you know, when your edges are back here. That's not
an easy thing.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
It is not an easy thing, and it does not
look cute and it doesn't make you feel good. And
so at one pm we're doing a long, sweet chat
where we're talking to the key lead stylist Daily Green,
Adrian Fannis and Scarlet of Boar play from all different
hair they're like top leaders in the hair in games.
So they're going to talk about your edges, they're going
to talk about alopecia, they're going to talk about transitioning,
(09:06):
they're going to even talk about starting your natural hair
care journey. Right And so I'm telling everyone, like, I
know you're coming for like to see the Vengers and
see all this, but bring the questions right like they're
here to answer it.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
And if listen, and if it's an issue for you,
it's an issue for other people too. I don't think
there is such a thing as an issue with your
hair that no one else is experiencing ectly. And sometimes
it is like something that's hard to talk about. We
had our girl Jeordie Door from Martha's Vineyard Summerhouse, and
you know, she was talking about her hair issues that
she's had and her alopecia and things like that, and
(09:41):
you know it's a hard discussion. We think about Jada
Pinkins Men and how that opened up a conversation about
alopecia and how difficult. That is, you know, whether or
not people had their views on that. That was definitely
something and even for men, yep, you know this is
something that I know for women we talk about this
lat but from men, you know, men are very I
(10:02):
always say, like these hair transplants and things like that,
those are the men's bbls, you know, because they are
definitely It changes like your whole appearance too. And sometimes
we take for granted that men have these issues and
we just think about ourselves, but that's something that they
can feel self conscious about too.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
No, you're right, and I think they keep it hidden. Yeah,
they're not like us. I think as women were more
vocal to our needs. We do have Hawaiian silky. They
are donating some men products. So men, definitely we have
something for.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
You, like no, we love you, we have something for you.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
I mean, we have something for everyone, for the kids,
so and everybody.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Y'all know how your men will be using your products
and you're like, sir, that's very expensive. Don't be just
globbing it on like that. But I appreciate when they do,
you know what I'm saying, because you do have to
steal shampoo, condition your hair and also use products in
your hair just like we do. So I think that's
a great education for them to and.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Just not be heavy with the products.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
There you go, all right, Well, listen, I'm really looking
forward to it. I'm glad you got a chance to
come up here to talk about it. So how could
people get more information?
Speaker 2 (11:07):
So more information or is on event? Right? You just
type in Brooklyn Natural Hairfest. You can also find us
on Instagram at BK Natural hair Fest June twenty third.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
And it's just the first year.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
This is the first year.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Okay, who knows.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
We might go to Newark, we might go to Harlem,
we might go to Miami. We'll see.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Okay, that sounds well. If you go to Miami, let
me know I will be there. But now, honestly, congratulations,
I love to see this. This is something that's important
to me, so I know it's important to other people.
So I wanted to make sure you were able to
come up here and let people know this is happening too,
because it is the first year, and I know it's
an event that's going to end up growing, you know,
So I'm glad to be.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Able to have you here. I appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Angela she wasn't playing either. She was like, can we
do it? I was like, we got to make sure
this happens. So thank you Angie again. That's Brooklyn Natural Hairfest.
It's going to be at Restoration Plaza and Best Die
And that's the Instagram page as well.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Yes, speak k Natural hair Fest all right, well
