Y'all know I have the Detox program, the Detox now
with Coach Jesse. This is all about making that we
stay as healthy as possible. It's way up. It's gonna
turn me up.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Here we go up again.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
This is way up with Angela Yee.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
What's up as way up with Angela Yee and my
girl Coach Jesse is here with me today. We're also
having a conversation about something that is alarming about synthetic
braiding here and protecting ourselves. And so, Coach Jesse, you're
my friend and my partner in the detax now and
we're gonna break this all down. But we have a
special guest, Kadija Doso, the founder of Doso Beauty.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Thank you for joining us, Thank you for hearing me.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
You have a nontassic hypoallergenic braiding hair brand that's changing
the game.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
But when that story broke about.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
How the braiding here is, you know, causing all kinds
of problems, the carcinogens in them, it was something that
made everybody sit up and take notice.

Speaker 8 (03:48):
In a recent study Consumer Reports did, they studied and
they tested ten hair braid brands and all ten of
them tested positive one hundred percent for carcinogens, which leads cancer.
Nine out of the ten actually tested positive for lead. So, Kadija,
I know you knew this because you started this seeing

(04:08):
that everywhere, But what did that make you feel like?

Speaker 6 (04:11):
I felt vindicated. I'm like, oh my god, I've been
saying this for you.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
We've had this brand for years and the craziest part
about it is that literally last year we conducted two studies,
one to test our hair for lead, mercury, other carcinogens
as well too, and we're lead free, we're EU standard
and words clinically tested, hyperlogenic too.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Right now, Kadija, Do So, Philly's own Do So Beauty
Products is here with us alongside coach Jesse from the Detox. Now, Kadija,
you knew something was wrong and you created this brand
because you had some issues?

Speaker 9 (04:41):
Yeh?

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Can you talk about that?

Speaker 5 (04:42):
What most people don't know is all these braiding hair
companies are brands. They can put whatever marketing and they
want on the actual packaging without any regulation because it's
not regulated at all. So it said it was clean therapy,
It's said that it was for your car centogens, and
it actually wasn't. I had a severe allergic reaction, dermatitis,
bumps all up and down my forehead.

Speaker 6 (05:01):
I had to take the hair out the next day.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
That is wild. See, and if that happens to you,
you might think did they braid it too tight? What happened?
Giving yourself?

Speaker 3 (05:08):
So?

Speaker 1 (05:08):
Then what did you do after that?

Speaker 6 (05:09):
After that?

Speaker 5 (05:10):
I went to Instagram and I pull about two hundred people,
and they also said, girl, I've been stop wearing braids
because I.

Speaker 6 (05:16):
Have been getting a really, really bad allergic reaction.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
So I then took it upon myself to go out
and find the best of the best and test so
many different manufacturers. You know.

Speaker 8 (05:25):
I think something that's important about what you said is
that a lot of times some people may say, well,
I don't have an allergic reaction, I don't have bumps,
But that doesn't mean that you're not still being affected
by those toxins, because they're not just sitting on top
of your head, right, They're actually seeping into your pores.
Because the skin on your head is actually the most
prominent in terms of direct feet into your bloodstream. So

(05:49):
even if you're not showing it by virtue of a
skin reaction, it may show up for you with fibroids.
Remember there was a study recently around the connection between
the chemical and relaxers, and then also with fibroids as
well as cancer, so this is very similar.

Speaker 6 (06:05):
It's really a kin for you.

Speaker 8 (06:06):
It may show up with heavy periods, it may show
up with a thyroid dysfunction. So don't think just because oh,
I don't have that reaction.

Speaker 6 (06:14):
That means I don't need clean hair, and.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
That's why that there's no regulations. What it shows is
because we are the ones that really use this braiding hair,
they don't really care about us.

Speaker 5 (06:24):
For sure, they know, and I mean honestly, even when
it comes to the actual ownership of it, most people
don't notice. But the beauty industry and more specific, ethnic
hair care industry is owned by less than two percent
of Black women, but we consume more than ninety percent
of the actual ethnic hair care market.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Kadija Doso is hair coach Jesse is here and we're
talking about your health. We're talking about the toxic chemicals
and braiding here and in beauty products we have more.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
When we come back, it's way up.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
This is way up with Angela Ye.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
What's up?

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Its way up with the Angela Yee. And I'm talking
to Kadija Doso, the owner of Doso Beauty. She has
hypoallergenic hair extensions and other hair care products for Black women,
alongside coach Jesset, who is always fighting to make sure
we take the best care of ourselves as possible and
that we have all the information when it comes to
our bodies and our health.

Speaker 8 (07:10):
What makes it non toxic? Because people be like, well,
what makes it toxic?

Speaker 6 (07:13):
Right?

Speaker 2 (07:14):
If there's no regulations, how do we even exactly exactly?

Speaker 5 (07:17):
So those Soul Beauty is clinically tested hyper ologenic, it's
also non toxic. So what makes it non toxic is
we purposefully tested it for lead, mercury, other carcinogens, and
other VOCs, independent third party and made sure that it
was EU standard because y'all know the US standard, it's
a US standard is toilet. Yeah, so I wanted to
make sure that it was hyper alergenic. Again, I had

(07:39):
that allergic reaction, so I needed to make sure it
was hyper olergenic safer sensitive skin. Prince to actually reach
out to us to conduct that actual study.

Speaker 6 (07:47):
Yeah, and it was amazing.

Speaker 5 (07:48):
They tested it on one hundred test subjects who also
have sensitive skin. So I needed to make sure that
we was good, right, so we have that. We made
sure that.

Speaker 6 (07:56):
It was lead free.

Speaker 5 (07:57):
We made sure that it was mercury free as well too,
so it does go to your bloodstream.

Speaker 6 (08:01):
It's super lightweight. I will let y'all touch my hair.
It's like it's like.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Yeah, super lightweight.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
We also have the most range of colors and lance options.
I knew there our silver Foxes needed silver and grape
braiding hair, okay, so we made sure that we have
silver and grape braiding hair that is accessible. We have
it in different length so for the baby girls who
are younger, they don't need long hair. We have sixteen inches,
twenty eight inches, thirty two inches. And then also the accessibility.

Speaker 8 (08:32):
We are on Amazon, but in these boycott days, you
can get into it, okay from okay, please.

Speaker 6 (08:39):
Comes directly to us.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Got right, that's right.

Speaker 6 (08:41):
But yeah, and we're black one own.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Right now, Kadijit do So, Philly's own do So Beauty
Products is here with us alongside coach Jesse from the Detox.
Now we also have to talk about legislation because I
think it is also alarming that this is something that
people know but nothing's being is there anything being done?

Speaker 5 (08:59):
So that is class actions going around. The Consummer Reports
actually put out a petition which.

Speaker 8 (09:04):
I they're almost at thirty thousands, Yes, they're almost at
thirty need thirty thousand. I think last night it was
at twenty six thousand. And the whole thing is to
legislate for fdaight more regulation because as you said, there's
literally no regulation. That's why it's in our beauty products.
It's in all of our products.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Well, look, I appreciate you for coming up and of
course Coach Jesse, you know, always on the mission to
make sure that we're educating ourselves because honestly, like we
shouldn't be ashamed of the fact that we weren't aware
of this, but now we are.

Speaker 6 (09:30):
I love that.

Speaker 8 (09:31):
It's just like, you know what, I can make a
swap and change the rest of my life.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Thank you could do just for making it.

Speaker 8 (09:36):
And you know, I think for people who be like,
oh my god, I've been using that, well, this is the.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
Perfect time for you to join us for the Detox
Now channel.

Speaker 8 (09:44):
Absolutely right, because listen, I need got to reset your body.
The fast is a great way to start reset your
body because at the end of the day, you want
to make sure you're flushing it of those toxics your
body's been harboring, right, your body's been holding on too
and it's time to do that.

Speaker 6 (09:58):
And you know, we start in March.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Thirty first, y'all.

Speaker 8 (10:00):
See if you want to join us, go to the
detox mail dot com.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Thank you so much to Kadija Dooso and to coach
to Jesse for joining us. Michelle, y'all get your Doso
beauty products. Also the Detax Now. We do have a
Detox Now challenge that is starting on Sunday, so you
can join us if you get your products.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
It's way up, whether it's relationship, for career advice, Angela's
dropping facts.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
This is as gee, what's up? Its way up?

Speaker 2 (10:23):
But Angela Yee. I'm Angela Yee and it's time for
ask yee. Eight hundred and two ninety two fifty one
fifty is the number. And of course we also take
voicemails in case you couldn't get through. While the phone
lines are open, you can still leave a voicemail, or
you can go on the iHeartRadio app and click that
on microphone in the corner and you can also leave
a message that way and we will still get it.
So today we have a question from an anonymous caller

(10:45):
on our voicemail.

Speaker 9 (10:46):
I had a three year of fair I ended up
getting pregnant, I had a baby. He ended up leaving
a wife for a brief amount of time, he moved
in with me, then he got back with the wife.
It complete. We cut meat and the baby off, so
I put him on child support. So now he says
that he's completely not in the picture it child support

(11:09):
is my only support and he doesn't even pay, So
what should I do?

Speaker 1 (11:14):
All right? Well, one thing I don't know from this message.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
I'm not an attorney, but I also don't know what
state she's in, so I don't know what the laws
are regarding child support when somebody's not paying. But I
will say a couple of things here. It's very unfortunate
that he is not trying to take care of his kid.
Regardless of what happened between you and him, this is
still his responsibility and at some point in his life
he's going to regret it. So I'm very sorry that

(11:40):
he doesn't understand that he has to be able to
separate what your relationship is with him and his relationship
with his kid. So a couple of things I want
to take into consideration as a mom.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Are you doing what you need to.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Do to make it convenient for him to be able
to see his kid? But you did say that he's
upset about paying child support, and now he's threatening to
not see his child. You know, My thing is people
act like child support is the worst thing in the
world at all times. A woman is the devil for
putting you on child support. But if that's the only
way that I can get support for our child, then yes,

(12:13):
that is what has to happen. You got yourself in
that situation by not handling your responsibility. Sometimes the best
way to mediate is to have the course to be involved.
With that being said, it's damn near impossible to force
somebody to see their child. The only thing that I
can encourage you to do is if you have a
relationship with his parents, you know, your child's grandparents or

(12:34):
anybody else, to try to make sure the child is
somewhat involved and knows that side of the family, because
at the end of the day, you don't want your
child to grow up and feel like that side doesn't
care about them, that side didn't want them just because
the father is a pos You know, maybe you can
even suggest some type of co parenting mediation so that
it's best for the child. But the main thing is

(12:56):
forget the fact that he's not with you. He left,
he did whatever he did. It's about your child and
not wanting your child to grow up feeling some type
of sense of something's missing or they weren't wanted, or
abandonment if that's possible, and if it's not possible and
he doesn't want to participate in any way, all you
can do is be the best mom that you can

(13:16):
be and make sure that you don't bad mouth the dad,
make sure that you don't make your child feel less,
and make sure you're not always blaming him for things
so that your child ends up feeling resemful. That is
nothing that a child should have to have the burden
of bearing. All right, Well that was asked ye eight
hundred two nine two fifty one to fifty. If you
couldn't get through, you could leave a message and ask
a question that way. And when we come back, Dwane

(13:38):
Curry is going to be joining us. Fighting to Be
Me is on b ET plus right now. But you
also were first introduced to Dwane Curry on American Gangsta
Trap Queens. She's got a fascinating story. Was born Eddie,
but now she's Dwane Curry. It's way up about to do.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
This, yeah, y'all, I'm all way up with angel on now.
Is what's up this way up for angela gee?

Speaker 2 (14:03):
And what a pleasure to have Dwanne Curry Here with Me,
the Original.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
The original Okay Gangs.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
The Original Gay Gangster, The Gg's Baby, and if you
haven't seen the original story on American Gangster child Queens,
but then also the movie Fighting to Be Me, the
Dwane Curry story, It's a BT plus original movie. I
feel like true stories are so much more fascinating than
anything that anybody could ever make up. And your story

(14:29):
is amazing. So you come from Detroit, but you ended
up in Oakland. You know, early on in life you
went through some struggles. Can we talk about that first?
When you were in Detroit and it just was not
working for you there?

Speaker 3 (14:42):
You know, the childhood was not bad at all. I
ended up going the wrong way and ended up on drugs.
It was extremely bad to where I had to go
to Oakland where my mother sent me and I ended
up going there with my uncle. So at that time,
the identity that I was trying to figure out within myself,

(15:05):
I wasn't really comfortable with that because I'm let's be real,
I'm fifty seven years old.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
So I came out in early eighties.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
You think the drugs is also away for you? Trying
to like, yes, not be who you are and escape.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
It's a way to camouflage. Was really going on what
you don't want to deal with, you know, So it
ended up being more of an escape. So it wasn't
until I became clean and I was actually able to
see things the way that I needed to see them,

(15:42):
especially by way of my uncle. He totally saved my life.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
Right now, Duane Curry is here fighting to be me.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
The bio pick on Dwane Curry's life is on b
et plus right now. And Lisa raised also a large
part of the story that's in the movie. Yes, and
yo y'all, yo, y'all amazing like but clearly like personality wise,
and what you were able to do for them thanks
to the fraudulent scamming.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
Partly and we'll get to that in a second.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
And you was blessing not just yourself but other people
around you too.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
You know what.

Speaker 4 (16:14):
Let me be real care this is the thing.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
The credit cards and things of that nature were predominantly
for flocks.

Speaker 4 (16:21):
So whenever I went shopping, my model.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
Has always been, if you take from the game, you
gotta give back. You know, everything was not fraudulent, and
you have to remember that I was a very renowned
wardrobe stylist at.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
A certain point, because I think we tell ourselves like, Okay,
I'm gonna stop when I get did you tell yourself that,
like I'm gonna get clean.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
I'm gonna not do this no more.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
I ended up getting so ahead of myself where I
had created such a lifestyle, not just for me, but
my family as well. So it always had to be more.
I why ting to find a way to be able
to legit.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
Yes, I'm going to get legit.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
Look, I was these stylists, and so I started doing
well for myself. But then something happened and I had
to jump back in and you see it.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
Watch the movie.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
Y'all right, I'm talking to Dwyanne Curry. There is a
biopic Fighting to Be Me on BT Plus. We got
more of Dwayne Curry's fascinating story and the honesty and
transparency is amazing.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
It's way up.

Speaker 9 (17:30):
You want to.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
Angela, what's up?

Speaker 2 (17:35):
Is way up at the Angela yee, and Dwayne Curry
is here with me. The biopic based on her life,
Fighting to Be Me is on b ET Plus.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
Right now, you're a.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Trans woman, yes, and then you go to a jail
but you go to a myth, so for you talk
to us about that.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
When I went to prison, it was extremely different. The
way I dealt with it is the way I deal
with being in society today. I don't have a problem
with cohabit, hating with any type of people.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
You know.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Of course, there was an unfortunate situation that happened with
me when I was in prison. You know, that was
really bad, But when it came to adapting, it was
nothing but respect. I only had that one incident that
was really bad. And if y'all want to know what
it is, then you need to watch the movie.

Speaker 6 (18:22):
Right.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
I would never want to go to a women's facility. Okay,
that's just me myself personally, because it's a whole lot
of work to be you and all of that. And
I definitely don't want to be around tons of y'all
or whatever when I go to Yeah, I mean, at
least at least give us some eye candy or something like.

Speaker 4 (18:45):
You know, I don't have to do nothing.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
Yeah, I mean, you know, but when it comes down
to you know, transgenders, it should be a choice.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
And do you think it should be a choice.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
That's so hard, you know, I don't want to be
a across the board whatever, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
And that's the difficulty of it.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
I mean, hey, I know for me, I'm not going
over there on the side, so I don't.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
And you're not going back to prison every Yeah, we're
doing movies.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
Yeah, we're doing movies. That's done right now.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Duane Curry is here fighting to be me. The bio
pic on Dwane Curry's life is on b ET Plus
right now. Now, what about the rest of the gay gangsters?
Do you still keep in contact? What's the deal with
with that? And were they're around when you went to jail?
Because you had a whole crew, the gay gangsters, you're
always running it up.

Speaker 4 (19:33):
I just saw them at the premiere.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
Oh okay, Zahir he's not here. Zaire so. Zaire was your.

Speaker 6 (19:43):
Your lover.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
He was Muslim, and he did not want his family
to know about you. He said, they didn't know about you.
He just couldn't bring you home. So he wasn't necessarily closeted.
But it was his religion that prevented him from knowing
that this could go any further.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
I'm supprised I'm figuring it out. You don't know whose
I is.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
I was trying to. I want to tell you because
it's a real person it is.

Speaker 4 (20:07):
But I'm not going and I'm it on air.

Speaker 1 (20:11):
So I was watching it and I.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
Was like, who better figure it out?

Speaker 1 (20:14):
This person?

Speaker 4 (20:16):
But you know who it is?

Speaker 9 (20:19):
All right?

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Well listen you guys, make sure you please watch Finding
to Be Me, the Dwanne Curry story. It's the reasons
like this that I have. But plus, okay, it was
actually phenomenal. It's amazing to have you here to be

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose.
