in twenty twenty five. I know it's cliche, but we
are going to have an amazing year, all right, let's
get into it. Leon Thomas is going to be joining
us today. We actually interviewed him last year and he's
up for six Grammy Awards at this ceremony this year,

(00:28):
including Album of the Year for Mutt. So talk about
somebody who really just went hard in twenty twenty five.
His album came out in twenty twenty four, the deluxe
came out in twenty twenty five, and he definitely has
made quite the name for himself. And then Godfrey and
tooth be told. Godfrey is the first person who ever
guest hosted on Way Up with Angela Yee when we

(00:48):
first launched. But he's also got a new special that
just came out on December twenty fourth, so if you
haven't seen it, make sure you check it out. But
of course he got to come through here to talk
about everything he has going on. So we're gonna back
to that as well. And when we come back, let's
shine a light. Eight hundred and two ninety two fifty
one fifty call us up. Let us know who you
want to shine a light on. It's way up.

We're gonna light to fuck up.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I'm shine a shine, Turn your lights on, y'all, your
lights on it, spreading love to those who are doing greatness.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Shine the light on them, Shine the light on them.
It's time to shine a light on them.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
What's up is where ya put angela yee? And you
know what time it is. It's time to shine a light.
Eight hundred and two nine two fifty one fifty Call
us up. Let us know who you want to shine
a light on. Vivian, who would you like to shine
a light on?

Speaker 4 (01:36):
I wanted to shine a light on my mom. Her
name is d She lives in Florida right now. She
has five kids, thirteen grandkids. Yeah, my mother, Yeah, she
is just like a rock in his family. She's always
going out of her way to make sure everybody else
is good. So I want to give my mom her
flowers while she's still here to smell them and let
her know that we love her and we appreciate her.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
That's beautiful. I know she loves having this big fam too.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
It's how hard that she moved back to Florida though,
But listen to love doesn't.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Change all right. Well, thank you for calling shout out
to her. Thanks, I have a great day, guy, you too.
That was Shina Light eight hundred and two ninety two
fifty one fifty if you couldn't get through. And don't forget.
Leon Thomas is going to be joining us six Grammy
Award nominations for this year's Grammys, and Godfrey will be
joining us later as well. He's got a new special
that's out right now. It came out on December twenty fourth,

(02:27):
Rubber with the Cause.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
It's way up, going way up, turn out with Angela Yee.

Speaker 5 (02:33):
We about to do this one of the lum most
famous women in radio vidiomen and we're talking about Angela.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Ye. You're way up with Angela yee. Please believe that
what's up?

Speaker 3 (02:42):
It's way up with Angela yee. I'm my guy beat
at yep. Oh and just a kid from Brooklyn. Leon
Thomas is here name in R and B man, First
of all, let's just talk about your tiny desk before
we even do anything else. Congratulations on that.

Speaker 6 (02:55):
Thank you so much. It was a really tough one
for me. I mean, two days after that, I had
to go to my grandfather's funeral. I'm sorry, so even
like prepared for it, it was It was definitely just a
lot of emotions. You know, He's always been one of
my biggest champions, and you know, I was definitely feeling
his energy with me that day.

Speaker 7 (03:11):
For sure.

Speaker 8 (03:12):
What about the reception of this album, But it's been
a pleasure man.

Speaker 6 (03:15):
You know, being signed to a major label, that sophomore
album be a make or break.

Speaker 7 (03:19):
You know, I ain't trying to be on anybody's shelf.

Speaker 6 (03:21):
So I was really from my heart and soul into that,
trying to make sure we can really get my torn
business up and running, and you know, really touched the people.

Speaker 7 (03:29):
But I'm just glad it really resonated to me. It's
like a testament to good music.

Speaker 8 (03:32):
It's almost like a word of mouth album like.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
And the problem is sometimes people want to like kind
of like they hate when other people Discovery was like
your first Billboard Hot one hundred exactly. But that song.
I mean, it really really went and that made even
go back and check out like discography. But some people
that's been on it for a minute feel like now
you're all up on gatekeeper.

Speaker 8 (03:56):
Trying to keep involved.

Speaker 6 (03:57):
But I'm just thinking for everybody who's been, you know,
tapping in and really doing a lot of content around
it too. I'm seeing on TikTok and Instagram people are
using it, you know for reals and everything else.

Speaker 7 (04:08):
Man, It's it's dope to see the growth of it all.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah, shout out to other guys who were dogs and MutS,
you know.

Speaker 8 (04:16):
Oh man, you know.

Speaker 7 (04:17):
It's just hard.

Speaker 8 (04:17):
It's just.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Right now Brooklyn's own and Leon Thomas is in the building.
Now listen, you're a child star also, thank goodness that
things turned out the way they did. I feel like
child stars also have this.

Speaker 7 (04:29):
Like it's like a dark cloud.

Speaker 8 (04:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
It could be tough though, you know, because not having
the childhood that everybody else had. What was child your childhood?

Speaker 7 (04:38):
Like, my childhood was really awesome.

Speaker 6 (04:39):
Shout out to my mom, you know, once we moved
to La, you know, she was definitely my protector.

Speaker 7 (04:44):
She always made sure she was just.

Speaker 6 (04:45):
Like locked in and you know, when it came to
business really helped me out.

Speaker 7 (04:49):
And having my mom and even my belief in God.

Speaker 6 (04:52):
I think it's really helped me roll through, you know,
the peaks and valleys of this whole thing, because I mean,
it hasn't been all just amazing for me when it
comes to this industry, but I think it's it's really
a testament.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
Of me being able to, you know, get up when
I fall down.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Leon Thomas is here. Y'all know he got that deluxe
album of Mutt. When we come back, we have more
with Leon Thomas. It's way up with Angela.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Let's go. Yeah, you are a media maven, right people.

Speaker 6 (05:17):
You never know what and is gonna say?

Speaker 3 (05:20):
What's up? Is way up with Angela. Yee, I'm here,
My guy beat Out is here and we are talking
to Leon Thomas.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Now.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
I want to ask you about this album too much
because I saw you also said this is a period
of time where you feel like maybe you're not ready
to be settled down, and yeah.

Speaker 7 (05:34):
Yeah, I mean I'm you know, I'm trying to figure
that part out.

Speaker 6 (05:37):
My schedule is pretty hectic right now, but I definitely
want to find love at some point.

Speaker 7 (05:41):
I think that's really important, you know.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Is that so you would say your relationship your last
month ended probably because you were too focused.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (05:48):
Yeah, it was a mixture of that. I mean, we
both were artists, and you know, it was just it
was just a lot going on for me. I always
want to let somebody be their best self, and I
felt like at a certain point, I don't know, she
was kind of in on what I had going on,
and I wanted her to definitely flow and build her
own thing because she's so talented as an artist, and
I didn't. I never wanted her to look back, like
six or seven years, you know, and be like you

(06:10):
never really put me on or did anything to help.
And I felt like maybe if we both focused on arm.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
You know, it's probably hard to date another artist. It's tough,
you know, just because it is like, what's that separation
at home, right, and like maybe doing things for each other.

Speaker 6 (06:27):
You know exactly you want to kind of like, you know,
turn that side off and just focus on kicking in
the house, you know.

Speaker 7 (06:32):
So yeah, it's definitely very tough.

Speaker 8 (06:34):
Into your phone.

Speaker 6 (06:35):
Inspired by that, I was gonna say that, you know what,
shout out to Diane Warren. She she wrote that regendary,
but I resonated with it because, yeah, there was song I.

Speaker 7 (06:44):
Felt like that. I love that song.

Speaker 8 (06:46):
It feels like old school begging kind of.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yeah, yeah, I love and begging song.

Speaker 8 (06:51):
Shout up with Jeff Giddy.

Speaker 6 (06:52):
You never would have had answer your phone on the
album if I didn't do a meeting with Jeff Giddy.

Speaker 7 (06:56):
He was like the whole R and B album no
begging song.

Speaker 8 (06:58):
I'm like, all right, so I found one.

Speaker 7 (07:01):
And you know, cut it and really sound adupe. Shout
out to Dying Warren.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Right now, Brooklyn's own and Leon Thomas is in the building.
And why did you say a deluxe album instead of saying,
let me put out a you know, standalone project. You know,
people just do music all different ways. I don't know
if there's a business decision behind that.

Speaker 7 (07:18):
Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 6 (07:21):
It's definitely some more business decisions behind that. The album
came out too late to be recognized for for any
nominations like Grammys and stuff.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
You know, because it definitely would have.

Speaker 6 (07:33):
Yeah, I mean, so we're definitely trying to, you know,
make sure we continue to breathe life into the project
to at least give it a fair shot.

Speaker 7 (07:39):
And I feel like the Deluxe is going to be
a great way for us to do that.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
I appreciate you so much for coming through. I was
really excited.

Speaker 7 (07:44):
I'm a big fan. Thank you for taking it.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Tom Well, thank you so much. And it's a pleasure
having somebody as talented as you are on the show.

Speaker 7 (07:50):
Thank you so much. I appreciate you.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
That was Leon Thomas. Shout out to him. Make sure
you check out the full interview on my YouTube channel.
Way up with Ye and we got the way it
mixed for you at the top of the hour. Unless
my guy Godfrey is going to be joining us, it's
way up with.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
It's relationship for career advice. Angela's dropping facts. You should
know this is ask what's up?

Speaker 8 (08:10):
Is way up?

Speaker 3 (08:10):
But Angela, yee. I'm here with the award winning advice
giving new man out and it's time for asking you.
We got Omar on the line. What's up? Omar?

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (08:19):
Soving the issue with my wife with our kids transitioning
out into the world. I have two of them, are
boy and the girl, and they're once twenty four and
the other one is twenty two, and they're not transitioning
the way that I feel they should be at this stage, you.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Know, right them at the house, right, yeah, and I'm.

Speaker 9 (08:39):
Going work, like you know, the economy is rough, you know,
times are hard, you know, And she doesn't want them
to boomerang back. But I mean, at what point do
you say, you know, that's enough and.

Speaker 7 (08:50):
Let them fly?

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Twenty two and twenty four is not that crazy?

Speaker 8 (08:54):
Though?

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Did they go to school? Like, what's the plan?

Speaker 9 (08:57):
They're working, but their jobs aren't consistent. A hard time
with maintaining apploytment and uh taking accountability for their shortcomings
and uh not growing in the fields that they're trying
to pursue.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
So you want them to be more responsible. And I
will say I moved out, like I went to college
and never came back and my parents were not playing
with me. That was a little bit of a tough life.

Speaker 8 (09:17):
It was a different time, I think.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Yeah, I do think now. I mean, you're out with
your son, you know, twenty two twenty two, still home
and he's still home. Do you want me to get out?

Speaker 10 (09:25):
No?

Speaker 9 (09:26):
He doesn't know because even though I want my son
Golo defrigerator, it arguments me to say, was the.

Speaker 11 (09:34):
Thing is this, though I want to be able to
hold him down as long as possible.

Speaker 8 (09:38):
I don't want to hold him.

Speaker 11 (09:39):
Back, but at the same time, if he needs to
support then you know, you got it. You got to
do it. But I get it though you want to
see them go out and flourish. Though I understand what
you're saying.

Speaker 8 (09:49):
But does it more that line of enibbling. What is
that line I do?

Speaker 7 (09:52):
It is?

Speaker 3 (09:53):
You know, the economy is really messed up for everybody
right now, and so I would be more patient. But
maybe you need to give them more responsibilities while they're
staying in the house.

Speaker 9 (10:05):
And what they want to be as possable of paying,
you know.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Well, you need to set some rules with that. Then
I think that you have to say, Okay, you guys
are staying here, here's what the rules are, because at
the same time, you want them to be able to
save to move out, but you also want them to know.
You don't want to be mad when your son opened
a fridge, because if he's contributing to the money that's
paying for the groceries, it's a different story, you know
what I'm saying. And if he's also buying groceries, So

(10:30):
what you need to do is establish some rules as
far as what they're going to be responsible for while
they're living in the home. That could also be beneficial
for you guys taking care of household expenses, right, definitely.
And then I think financial literacy and education is not
always something that we learn. Make sure that they're on
a budget to save a certain amount of money so

(10:51):
they know when they hit this market it's time for
them to look for a place, because sometimes it's not easy.
Also figuring out how do I budget, how do I
say even? These are all responsibilities that you can be
helping them learn but also having them contribute.

Speaker 8 (11:05):
All right, well, I'll definitely preature you guys insight and
be my wife.

Speaker 7 (11:09):
Boys.

Speaker 9 (11:09):
We'll talk some more about it and maybe you know,
go out a little differently. You know, I appreciate your
time today, and right you gotta take care.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
All right, you too? That was ask Yee eight hundred
and two ninety two fifty one fifty. I'll go on
the iHeartRadio app click that microphone and ask you a
question that way, and when we come back, Godfrey is here.
It's way up with Angela Yee.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
We about to doos the famous women in radio audio,
and we're talking about Angela ye, you're way up with Angela.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Ye please believe that what's.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Up as way up with Angela yee. And my good
friend Godfrey is here, yea.

Speaker 8 (11:43):
What First of all, the genesis of this whole thing.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
I love the fact that they booked you, and I
looked at the calendar. I said, oh, Godfrey's coming.

Speaker 8 (11:51):
I thought it was weird. And I sat in your
green room and I was angry.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
He's like, why is Godfrey in the green.

Speaker 8 (11:56):
I'm like, I want to just walk in and bother
you y'all sort of walking and interrupt, I know.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
But then I was like, you know, Godfrey's gotten real Hollywood, so.

Speaker 8 (12:04):
It's really really cut up.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
And you know that Club Shashay interview. What was so
funny was that I was like, he's imitating him, but
he knows.

Speaker 10 (12:13):
Yes, people think that I was imitating Shannon Sharp, unbeknownst
to him. First of all, they all make Shannon Sharp
is I'm not going to clown him if you do.
He said, Hey, Godfield, I want you to do me
and you interview me as me And I said all right,
and we we planned it. It wasn't like, oh, let
me clown Shannon Sharp.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
It just was such a regular conversation. It was so
the way it looked was you were talking to him
like him, but he wasn't reacting. You know, before I know,
I'm glad this happened.

Speaker 8 (12:43):
Do they know how.

Speaker 12 (12:44):
Big Shannon Sharp is. They talk all that smack, but
when you see him, you're like, oh, hey, Shannon, I
was just joking.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
He would go, right now, Godfrey is here with us.
You know that's my guy. He really helped me kick
off way up with you. Isn't it crazy how fast
the tides turn and then can turn back because I
feel like we're sharing this Sharp all that drama happened,
and then I felt like we kind of forgot about
it that.

Speaker 12 (13:06):
Way because it was bogus and you know, it's not
like the person was underage. It was just somebody trying
to get a bag. And I think it's great that
he's joking on himself. And I told Jan and I said, man,
make fun of yourself.

Speaker 8 (13:18):
Man, what are you gonna do? What else you gonna do?

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Right?

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Well, I think you know, the thing for him was
also people feel like he had this big deal on
the table, one hundred millions O.

Speaker 8 (13:27):
Yeah, I know, and he probably but here's.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
The thing, and then he ended up postponing the tour,
like I shouldn't do this right.

Speaker 12 (13:33):
Well, I think he's gonna be just fine. He's great
at what he does. The show is amazing.

Speaker 8 (13:37):
And my thing is it almost seems like like Zion
the ball Player Diaan Williamson all of a.

Speaker 12 (13:42):
Sudden, this girl's coming out really because it's always like
somebody with a lot of dough.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
I meant what it is, that's.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
What we hear about, right, Listen. I don't want that
to happen to anything celebrities.

Speaker 8 (13:54):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Also, at the same time, know that there's a lot
of women who things have happened to that are quiet
about it and'll never speak about it.

Speaker 12 (14:01):
Side for them when it's constantly like are you sure, and.

Speaker 8 (14:05):
Then they end up lying.

Speaker 12 (14:07):
You know, it's just weird because everybody's trying to get
it back, so then you go, wow, what is this about?

Speaker 8 (14:11):
You understand where coming from?

Speaker 3 (14:13):
I mean it's hard because like even with the whole
CATCHI thing, no one believed her till the video came
out of her getting like beat up in the hallway.
Everybody that video came out, they were like, oh damn,
like this really happened, because sometimes we can put people
in a certain and I don't mean you idolizing anybody,
but sometimes people can idolize someone to the point where
they don't believe that that person could have done something
like this. So we don't know who did what, and

(14:35):
so we don't know what's true. We don't know what's
not true. So I never liked because even if somebody
gets found not guilty or guilty, those things could also
be wrong, you know what I mean. And that's what's
really risky about women coming forward to say anything, because
it's really hard to prove.

Speaker 8 (14:49):
We just just stop interacting with each other.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Glad For is here, and we got so much more
with him when we come back. He's got stories for days.
I could just sit back and I say, I damn,
where we got more? Godfrey's way up?

Speaker 1 (15:05):
What you're being waiting for? You with Angela?

Speaker 8 (15:10):
What's up?

Speaker 3 (15:10):
His way up with Angela? Yee? And Godfrey is here
with us today. Comedian Godfrey, do you ever use AI
for anything to I'm going to test something out right now.
What I just want to see. I want to see
what jokes should Godfrey tell? And I'm gonna ask chat
tv T. I'm just curious. All right, here's what it says.
What if Donald Trump was a Nigerian uncle, he'd be like,

(15:33):
believe me, I am the best uncle. I have the
best goats. Nobody raised goats better than me.

Speaker 13 (15:41):
I have the best boats ever. My goats said the best.

Speaker 7 (15:48):
My goats are fantastic.

Speaker 8 (15:49):
This is a great show.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
If Denzel Washington gave a ted talk on dating.

Speaker 8 (15:53):
Apps that you're doing, because they're.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
Like, yes, yeah, person, look at that left.

Speaker 10 (16:01):
My man.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
You gotta be precise. You got to be deliberate. You
can't just swipe on everybody.

Speaker 8 (16:05):
Is that what you're doing? Huh? Gotta swipe left. If
you don't like you, what do you do? Now? What
are we gonna do? We're gonna swipe those wipe left,
swipe right.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Oh, I want you to talk about the New York
City subway experience.

Speaker 8 (16:17):
Okay, all right?

Speaker 3 (16:18):
People doing TikTok therapy. That's cute.

Speaker 8 (16:21):
TikTok's cue goftley, that's the cute.

Speaker 10 (16:29):
How about that that's suck?

Speaker 8 (16:32):
Yeah. What if Jack Ebt was Angela y.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
No, I would this is so random, kind.

Speaker 8 (16:42):
Of like in the ballpark.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Do you use it at all?

Speaker 8 (16:45):
No, I never I haven't.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
It might be kind of funny for you to.

Speaker 8 (16:47):
I should just try and use it. Nigerian uncle, I
want some food. Food. What a great dish. It's such
a great dish. Joe Biden couldn't have food.

Speaker 7 (16:57):
Food.

Speaker 8 (16:58):
Yeah, antains are so bad.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
Plants.

Speaker 13 (17:03):
It's maduros. The stonias too bad. We're shipping all the
latinos out.

Speaker 8 (17:08):
No more tastons.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
Oh my gosh, I can't take it too bad.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
Angelaue all the way.

Speaker 8 (17:15):
Up, because you might go down if you're not careful.

Speaker 13 (17:19):
Angelae's going all the way down. The Devil and Angelae.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
I'm using that that's gonna be the drop for the show,
going all the way down. I'm loving this. What we
miss having you up here? You really did kick offf
way up at Angela.

Speaker 8 (17:38):
Y very beginning. You could say anything. I'm first, I'm
the originator. There's only one high lambda here. You are
you entertained or what? I'm the original one? That you
like him or not? To tell us say some everything
making the Bible.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
It is you, it is me. Chapter one, it's him
age god free, it's way up going the world that
was godfree. And make sure you check out his podcast
and Gudfree We Trust. But also check out Reveel with
a Cause that was released on December twenty fourth. That's
actually his fifth stand up special throughout his career. And

(18:18):
when we come back, this is your show. So you
have the last.
