Hi, This is Bill Clinton, and welcome to the new
season of Why am I telling you this? Why am
I telling you this? Because it is your future on
the line? And why am I telling you this? Why
am I telling you this? Why am I telling you
this tonight? Not to take you down, but to keep
you looking up. I started why am I telling you this?
Because I spent a lifetime being interested in other people's stories.

(00:23):
I come from a working class family, and sometimes times
were good and sometimes times were not great. Because once
you've heard a person's hopes and fears, where they've been,
where they want to go, your differences start to slip away.
There are people in North Philadelphia that don't know a Republican.
There are millions of people in rural America that don't

(00:45):
know a Democrat. With deep divisions taking tighter hold across
America and all around the world, it's clear that we
all need to know each other better. Men hate each
other because they fear each other, and they fear each
other because they don't know each other. So I wanted
these conversations to celebrate the unique gifts that make life interesting,
but to affirm that our common humanity matters even more.

You don't want everybody having the same opinion. You want
to be forced to harmonize with people to make choices.
I came of age knowing that the right to vote
wasn't just about casting a ballot. It was the only
way to tackle the poverty we lived in. And I
get to be a fan of some of the most
compelling and entertaining people in music, television, film and sports

and ask about why and how they do what they do.
First day of practice, Chuck Davies said, Michael Jordan, You're
going to be the captain of the dream Team, and
Michael Jordan said, no, Magic Johnson and Larry Birds should
be the captain of the dream Team. Every character that
you're writing about has to be the hero of their
own story. People are not just these two dimensional paper

you know, doll cutouts. If you'll control the fire, you
can do any cooking you want. Control the fire, and
you will have been control of your destiny. I hope
