Speaker 1 (00:02):
Ready to get started. Matto.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
I think these first stalls are all right. We just
need to clean it up, add new kickboards, and fix
the roof. Of course, I'm hoping to finish it in
time to transfer our friles to the new business management
system I just got, Blake. It'll make record keeping much easier.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Blake, what is it, Matto? Quiet Rocky? What's he all
worked up about?

Speaker 3 (00:24):
I've got some bad news, Blake?

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Uh, all right, bad news. Uh huh uh? What are
you sick or something? Sick?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
No, I'm just fine, thank you.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Oh okay, sorry, that's just where my mind goes first.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
It's all right, but you're not gonna like this. Rocky
found groundhogs under the old barn under yep, and they've
dug under the foundation.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
No, no, you're not serious. Groundhogs.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Oh come on, they've completely destroyed the foundation.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Look at this.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
I know.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
There's holes on every side.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
I know.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
This barn's completely useless to us.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Without a foundation, we won't have enough stalls, we won't
have anywhere to quarantine multiple horses. We can't accept half
the rescues we've got coming.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
The Audit's only a month away.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Look here, Blake, your mind's moving from problem to problem
like a scared dough in a thicket. Slow yourself down,
or you won't see a path out.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
There, you go, son, Okay, Mato, Well we need quarantine
stalls for when horses come in sick or without a
current Coggins test, we can't risk breaking disease to other horses.
But we wouldn't get that far because without the stalls,
we won't pass our audit. So we need to build
a new barn, or at least replace the foundation in

(01:56):
this one. However, neither of these are a four options.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Hmmm, well it sounds about as bad when you slow
it down. Look what if we rebuilt the foundation ourselves, Mato,
Now listen, listen. My granddad and his brother built it
from scratch to start with, So why can't we.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
We don't have the time for that, but you gave
me an idea. The Zayin brothers owe me a favor.
They do foundation work. I can give them a call
and see if they can squeeze us in.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
I know we're pushed for time, but I like the
idea of rebuilding in ourselves. We could get the old
ranch hands up here, rebuild the foundation, and then go
on the cattle drive like old times.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Sounds nice, but you're dreaming, Mato. See what you can
do about those ground hawks. I'm gonna research some options
and call the Zay brothers. Bailey will need to work
on these files. We can't get behind on that either.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
All right, I'll set some traps for now. We'll get
this figured out.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Blake, Whooo, this.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Rope swing is amazing this month in a moment so far,
I'm glad we did this. It's been forever since I've
come into the hay barn for anything other than hey,
And pretty soon it'll be so full of round bales
we wouldn't be able to swing. How'd you ever have
the guts to do this as a little kid? Or

(03:34):
get your hands around this huge rope? See that loop
by your waist? Uh huh oh, I see you put
your foot in the bottom loop and hold that one
with your hands. Nope, Actually I never did have the
guts to do it when I was little, not alone anyway.
Connor stood in the bottom loop and held me while

(03:55):
I stood in the higher loop.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Ah, that's so sweet.

Speaker 4 (03:59):
Yeah, he was a great big brother. But once my
mom found out, she made me wear a harness and
use a caraveiner. That makes sense, but I never felt
scared with Connor. It was complete childish trust. It's too
bad to bed grow up and lose that though, Isn't
it that easy confidence? Yeah, like a lot of rescue horses. Actually,

(04:25):
I think we'll get some that have major trust issues
with people. Maybe that's the problem with this new mare.
I don't know Zoe. I don't think she has any
history of being mistreated by anyone. But didn't they say
she was never accepted into a herd and just kept

(04:45):
getting chased off. Yeah, so she's never had a true connection,
not even with other horses. No one else to rely on. Hmmm, here, Bailey,
you turn to swing? No thanks, you can go again?
All right?

Speaker 5 (05:00):
Who there you two are?

Speaker 4 (05:03):
Alejandro? I haven't seen you in days? What's the cowboy?

Speaker 6 (05:09):
Well, clearly I'm not having as much fun as you.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
This is so fun. Climb up to the loft and
try it. I'll bring you the rope and don't worry
about all the spider webs. I made a path the
first time I did it. That part wasn't so fun.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
Cool about this swing?

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Not the spiders, Alejandro, aren't you supposed to be helping
my dad and Gepop fix the old barn.

Speaker 6 (05:31):
The jeep Hope said, he texted me when they needed me,
so I thought i'd come find you after doing the watering.

Speaker 5 (05:37):
Oh maybe that's him.

Speaker 6 (05:38):
Mmm, well it's your dad, but he's looking for you.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
Bailey, do you have your phone?

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (05:44):
Ooh hmmm, I don't even know where it is. It's
over there on the round bail. Oh. Thanks, Come on, Alejandro,
try the rope swing.

Speaker 6 (05:58):
Okay ooh yikes.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
He's texted me a full to do list. Just put
your foot in that loop and hold on. There's alfalfa
bails in case you fall. But Bailey doesn't want those
messed up, so uh.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Don't fall, got it? Huh? Whoa Zoe, You didn't get
all the spider webs.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Oops, you must swing farther than me. Oh. My dad
wants me to do all this computer stuff, and our
scanner broke so I can't even finish uploading the receipts
and Coggin's records. Who remember, Bailey, you can use the phone.
You can scan stuff with the app I showed you.

(06:46):
Then just email it to yourself, Alejandro. When you slow down,
just lower yourself down and drop. Okay, Zoe, but I
don't know why my dad expects me to know how
to transfer the files into business. Oh, it's some all
in one program for the rescue.

Speaker 5 (07:03):
Oh.

Speaker 6 (07:04):
I know how to use that program.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
I can tell you.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Oh okay, thanks you coming, Zoe. Nah, I want to
visit with Jetta a little bit. Who's Jetta? Oh it's
just a temporary name for the mayor. You can totally
change it. I just thought, since she's jet black and
super fast, that the name fit Jetta.

Speaker 5 (07:26):
Hmm, I like it super fast. Huh.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Don't even think about it, Alejandro. No one's riding that
horse for a long time.

Speaker 5 (07:34):
All right, she's pregnant.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
No, that's not the problem. You can ride a horse
until the last month of pregnancy. But that doesn't mean
she'll let you anywhere near her, let alone on her back.

Speaker 6 (07:46):
Okay, I guess I can wait.

Speaker 7 (07:52):
I'm saying, thirty two year old Galdana.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
Uh huh.

Speaker 7 (07:57):
Oh, if you could go to our website, Oh you have, Well,
it's still under construction, but you can just email it. Oh,
I'm sorry about that. We have been pretty busy.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Uh huh.

Speaker 7 (08:14):
I assure you we can provide the best care for
your horse for Marty. Okay, that's quite all right, ma'am.
Call again if you change your good day to you too.
Oh oh, this is ridiculous. Hey mom, Oh up here

(08:40):
in the laundry room, we're gonna do a little computer work.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
Hi, missus coolbark.

Speaker 7 (08:45):
Hello, will you please hold for a moment, Bailey check
your email? Okay, honey, hello, thank you for holding. How
can I help you?

Speaker 4 (08:57):
Oh yeah, I should probably check out more off.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
You can just check it on your.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
Phone on my phone. I know, I know, I'll get
used to it one day.

Speaker 6 (09:07):
So this is your room.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Yeah, this is it.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
It's nice.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
I mainly used the computer up here for school, but
it's been nice to have it for all the horse
rescue stuff.

Speaker 5 (09:17):
Is this a picture of Wilder?

Speaker 4 (09:19):
Oh yeah, Zoey took it. She actually made a little
album here. I want to see.

Speaker 5 (09:25):
This is great. Hey, look I made the album.

Speaker 6 (09:30):
That was when we were all stuck in the barn
during the hailstorm. Yep, that was a crazy.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
Day, you mean how I had a panic attack, almost
lost Wilder to Colic and had my eyes open to
how selfish I was being with both Sunny and Wilder.

Speaker 6 (09:45):
I was actually remembering how I galloped soldier up the
side of a mountain to save baby cows in a
torrential downpour and hit out in a cave just in
time to avoid the gigantic hailstones. But uh, you had
a pretty big day too, I.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
Guess the side of mountain. Gigantic hailstones. Uh huh, there
was like a minute of hail and not even over
the whole property.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
Yeah, good thing too, missed the alfalfa completely.

Speaker 5 (10:10):
Kind of a miracle harvest here.

Speaker 4 (10:11):
Dad said, seriously, it was a risk devoting a whole
field to alfalfa. Hey, but Connor wanted to do it. It's
the best, Hey for pregnant mayors too, Like he knew
we needed or something. Things always seemed to work out
for him like that.

Speaker 6 (10:29):
Well, until you know. I saw him on the trail
camera today, Wilder, I mean with his herd, these same horses.

Speaker 5 (10:37):
In the picture.

Speaker 6 (10:38):
Really. Yeah, I have all the trailcams connected to my phone.
Want me to connect yours?

Speaker 4 (10:44):
Sure?

Speaker 7 (10:45):
Here Bailey, Alejandro, what are you two doing up here together?

Speaker 1 (10:53):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (10:53):
Uh, nothing, We were just doing nothing.

Speaker 4 (10:56):
We were just we were just talking and I said
we were coming in to do computer work for the rescue.

Speaker 7 (11:03):
Okay, maybe use the computer downstairs from now on.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
Of course, I'm so sorry. I didn't even think of that.

Speaker 7 (11:11):
Hey, it's all right, Alejandro. I guess we just need
to set a new precedent. I haven't really had the
need before.

Speaker 5 (11:17):
Now.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
Oh my goodness, Mom, we got it going now.

Speaker 6 (11:22):
Sorry again, this is Cooper.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Mm hmm.

Speaker 6 (11:26):
Hello.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
That old barn was built right the first time and
was well below the frost line.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
That was eighty years ago, Mato.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
But it's still standing after eighty years, and there's history there.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
I know.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
That's why it's worth letting the professionals do it. Want
of water, soda water? I looked into it, Mato. The
frost protected shallow foundation is less expensive, and we'll let
him fix all that groundhog mess. And still we'll keep
the original beams and clading. I'll find a way to
pay for it somehow. I just don't see another solution.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Well, Blake, then we better go ahead and get it done.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
I think that's best, Matso.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
I'll get things ready to do the cattle Brandon. Then
we might as well be useful with that while someone
else fixes my granddaddy's barn.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
Good and I'll ask Shannon if she'll call and set
it up.

Speaker 7 (12:30):
I'm glad you've agreed on a plan, but I don't
know if I can spend another minute on the phone today.
Oh yeah, a lot of old horses need in retirement pastures,
not retrainable like Bailey wants.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
That's still good. We are a sanctuary.

Speaker 7 (12:47):
I don't know, Blake. I hope we're not biting off
more than we can chew with this. A lot of
these older horses are really costly to keeping good care,
and we could easily get shut down if we can't
keep up with their needs.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
It's a lot, I know, and we're hitting a few
unexpected bumps in the road, but that's how it is.
Starting anything worthwhile. We just need to dig deep and
get through this audit. I think we can make it work.
You're right.

Speaker 7 (13:12):
I think I'm just tired. There's so much to do
and I just can't seem to keep up with it
like I used to.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Well, we are getting older.

Speaker 7 (13:22):
Speak for yourself. I'm barely into my forties. It's the
new thirties, you know. And I heard my dad mention
Brandon tomorrow, who do you think is gonna ride cannon
and rope? Those calves.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Okay, okay, we're both still kids.

Speaker 7 (13:40):
Then sure, let's go with that and get back to work.

Speaker 4 (13:49):
Well, girl, turn in, you've got this.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
Well.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
The name suits her, Zoe. She's the best one, all right.
It must be what kept her safe out there. She
almost looked like she was gonna try and jump out
of the round pen too.

Speaker 7 (14:06):
She's still so scared.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
But why we aren't gonna hurt you. Girl. We're good. Really,
I'm coming out. Give her a break. Come on, Jetta, girl,
she's low on. Hey, I'm gonna grab some flakes from
the barn. Okay, I'll toss her some more feed cubes.
She seems to like those. Alejandro put these here for you,

(14:29):
and Bailey went to get more. Hay, we are a
nice herd. I promise, there you go. I know you
want some tasty treats. I see you looking at them. Oh,
now you're looking at me. All back off there for
you girl. There you go, good girl. Okay, now I'm

(14:53):
gonna put some in the other feed pan. Come on,
you gotta come over to this side. Hey there, I
see you too. You have soft eyes, pretty girl. You
can't be scared of little ol me. See. I'll back away.
It's all for you, Zoe, Zoe, come quick. Huh Hey,

(15:19):
how'd you do that? What she moved toward you? I
saw her just now walk across the round pen toward you.
I just put cubes in her feet pan. I can
tell when she looks at me, she's asking me if
she can trust me. So I show her she can
by giving her the space to eat the food. It
seems she needs less and less space the more I

(15:41):
do it. Wow, that's genius. I don't know about that, well,
at least super intuitive. Great job, Zoe. I think you're
ready for your first riding lesson. WHOA. I tell you
that my success came from giving a horse space, literally
backing away from it. And you take that to me
and I'm ready to ride one. It shows you're reading

(16:03):
the horse, understanding that it's a relationship based on responding
to each other with truth and respect. Honestly, I could
probably take a lesson from you right now. That's wonderful
and all, but I do better on the ground. Really,
that's perfect because that's how we start with groundwork. Groundwork.

(16:23):
I'll explain that later. First you have to come in
the barn with me. Why are we starting our lessons now, no,
I found what was making your mystery sound. You did,
mm hmm. Climb up there and look left. Okay, look left, left,

(16:45):
look left.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
See whoa hittens?

Speaker 4 (16:49):
Tiny itty bitty kitt
