diversity in books. Plus what we've learned from Nintendo Direct.
All that and more on news x ray Vision the News.

(00:27):

Speaker 2 (00:50):
In today's previously on News episode, we are catching up
on all the biggest geek news of this week, including
all those Chazz twenty seven Chazz five and a half
hours probably cost only about one hundred dollars. Whoever came
up with that shrimp, Marvel, give him a pay rise.
We're also talking about the beleagued Warner Brothers Studios and

(01:11):
the beleagued David Zaslav. Finally, the tide is turning on
this man who many of us have been saying, what
is he doing? Why is he doing that now? The
New York Times is asking those same questions. We're also
going to be talking about Thunderbolts, we need, Diverce Bookday
and everything announced at Nintendo's new Nintendo Direct.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
First up, Avengers Doomsday promo is upon us and Marvel
Disney has released the most bang for your buck marketing
move ever with a five and a half hour stream

(01:53):
depicting set chairs director's chairs with the names of the
cast of the coming Marvel film Avengers Doomsday written on
the back of them and revealed over the course of
this five and a half hour uh stream. Those names
include Chris Hemsworth, Returnings Thor Vanessa Kirby making her not

(02:21):
MCU debut, but you know, making her event movie debut
as Sue's Storm, Anthony Mackie, Your Captain America, Sebastian Stan
Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier, Literatia Wright. Surey. Perhaps the
Black Panther Paul Ruddy had a tiny chat and a
tiny chair, very very funny. That's probably the one bit

(02:44):
of like production that they actually had to do for this,
and set designers make the little chair, make the little
chap Wyatt Russell, John Walker, Us Agenterta Nomore, Eben Moss
Backrock Bend Him the Thing him making his event debut,
Simolu shouting where is he making his event debut? Florence Pugh,

(03:11):
Lena Kelsey.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Grammer what this is? Where they started that, They were like,
you've been waiting two and a half hours, guys, Let's
give you a little spice. Let's put this is not
just a list. You know, we were joking in the
in the group chat me an hour and like, what
if this was just like a documentary they were making,
and they just put a list of people who'd been
in the movies before because up till this point and
that's really it was just like some people in an MCU.

(03:33):
But then they said, hey, hang McCoy Beast Fox era,
you want him back. He was in the Marbles, He's
coming back.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
That's right. You did see him in the Marvels, but
now he's in it. He double it as the Beast.
Uh Lewis Pullman is the Sentry coming over from the
Thunderbolts movie. Danny Ramirez is Falcon, Joseph Quin, Johnny Storm,
David Harbor, You're Red, Guardian Whinston, Duke and Baku.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Finally, on a.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
John Cayman as Ghost. Tom Hills did his back as Loki.
What is it original Loki or is it hold him
out of the middle of the time stream and he's
like giving up his job like holding the time stream together?
Or do they get a different one from a different
time streams and shy and be reborn. There's a lot
of There's a lot of options here, folks. Patrick Stewart,

(04:25):
Charles Xavier, Professor X in the building crazy. Ian McKellen
will going old.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Ye.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Now, let me ask you, I do feel like when
they let's continue, but I will say, yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Feel like questions.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
I feel like we need some young blood for the
X Men, whatever the case. Alan conmon, Now this was
getting excited.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
This was also a great crossover here because I think
a lot of traitors fans who don't give a shab
out of MCU was suddenly like, what my king like
my my sassy king. I love him.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Last seen in the in the Incredible X two X
Men United film, Hell then coming repriasing his role as
night Crawler Crawler Rebecca Romayne, whoa returning as night Crawler's
mom Mystique.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
That's definitely canon in the MC.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
James Mars did not dead as psych said incredible, Channing
Tatum being brought over from a Deadpool and Wolverine as Gammit.
I absolutely love this because I thought he was actually great.
Pedro Of Pascal as mister Fantastic making obvious debut, and
Robert Downey Junior as everybody's uh favorite autocrat Victor von Doom.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Okay, and I will say, as much as we talked
about the lack of production expense hit Robert do Engine
did show up at the end, So this thing probably
costs like ten million dollars as much as it Maybe
it was included in his Doctor Doom contract. But yes,
and we should say, though Jason showcased his massive knowledge

(06:09):
of the MCU, no surprises there. We do not one
hundred percent know who these characters, who these actors are
going to be playing.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
It did not announce we we believe we know going along.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
I will say after this, my biggest theory is that
there is some kind of incursion in the Fox x
Man universe and they all die kind of like at
the beginning of Days of Future Past, and we get
the cameos, we get that stuff. Okay, Jason, who were
you most surprised to not see on this list.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Miss marvel Iman VI, Lady christ Hanens. I thought would
be a for sure Ruffalo Hulk, Like, I think there's
a lot, but I will say that I there's no
It doesn't mean if the name isn't on the chair,
oh no, that they're not in the film. In fact,
I think it for certain characters makes it even more

(07:04):
likely that.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
There is Scarlet way. Yeah, but they want it's going
to be the spoil it.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I think Evans is one where you're like, you got
to get necessarily want to spoil it. Yeah, So I
think Charlie Cox is scaredel I'm a little surprised, you know, Dakoa.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Johnson is Madam Webb obviously the one I was most
surprised about Chris Pratt.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
You figure you'd bring all the Chris is do cheeto cheatle.
I think we're going to see I think we're going
to see at least some of the notable names that
were missing be actually in this film. Yeah, I do.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
I would also say as well, like I think that
this is very much you know, this is doomsday. We
could definitely see more in Secret Wars. I think also
something I have to mention is and I know whoever
did this, I'm so sorry because I know that you
were probably they probably told you were going to do
this like twenty four hours before. But the cunning on
some of these names was like so painful. I'm looking

(08:00):
at this shit for five and a half hours, like
some of the letisha right, guys, just adjust it, like
every single letter was touching. Also, the S I didn't love.
I don't love the way that the s's look on
this though it was a little bit evocative of the marvels.
So yes, that was my font feedback.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
There are many incredible letterers who work for Marvel, and
I know you are all the same company nowadays, So yeah,
I think you're right. I think this is twenty seven people,
probably you know, twenty of whom will be in the movie.
For maybe ten minutes. The Russos have been around talking
about the fact that they have found a radical new

(08:36):
way to do this. It's not going to be Endgame
all over again. It's not going to be Infinity War.
So I'm interested to see what that means. Yes, I
wonder if this first movie is going to be kind
of a Battle World movie. A god Emperor Doom in
charge of battle World, and then you have Secret Wars
as the follow up. Yes, the leaks could, which you
don't want to don't for those. And also I would

(08:59):
say IGN had a piece talking about how Marvel and
RDJ were even teasing after that five and a half hours, like,
there's more to come, This isn't it, This is just
what we could fit into.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
A Marvel stream comments there's always room for more, and
RDIJ said, hey, that's a deep bench, but that must
be it. Dot dot dot right, Yeah, so clearly more
to come.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
More to come, very interesting, gonna be looked at in
marketing in probably the same way as Barbenheimer in the future.
Because there were hundreds of thousands of people watching this,
live chatting this. Every single website Polygon IGN noticed had
a running thread of this. It was kind of the

(09:48):
first time in a while that Marvel had gotten that
online conversation going again in the way that their old
you know, El Capitano or San Diego comm con announcements would.
So whoever came out with this give them a raise.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
And it also shows an ability to ring that marketing
bell that their first while rival Warner Brothers in DC
is not able to do or has not shown a
capability to do yet. And folks, we're coming up on
decision time at Warner Brothers DC. There is a new

(10:26):
and a brutal takedown of David's Aslav in the New
York Times titled Warner Brothers Chief vowed to revive it's
film studio. It's not going well by Brooke Barnes. And
while a lot of the stuff in here is stuff
that we've been talking about, including how desperately the company
needs Superman to hit, there's a lot of details in here,

(10:46):
including Zaslav's personal green lighting of the mob drama Alto Nights,
which has an average cast age of approximately ninety two
years old and is currently flopping to a not shocking degree.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Yes, and can I say as well with Alto Knights. Guys,
this is something I want you to say. I'm not
saying you should just like the execs or needs to
listen to podcasts. I'm sure they all do. I'm sure
they listen to the town. But like many many people
in the creative side of making these shows, the creative
people whose incredible animation series like Infinity Train were being

(11:26):
taken off, the people who made the very very much
highly anticipated and apparently very good Looney Tunes Kyote versus
Acme movie. People have been talking about Alto Knights for years.
It was well known when David Zaslav came into One
of Brothers that one of the first things he personally
green lit while he was shutting down Backgirl and many

(11:48):
other things was a mob movie by one of his
you know friends that he hangs out with on in Montaux,
his neighbor. Like this is just his neighbor, Like this
is not It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. We
were talking about this, But I'm very glad to see
a big place like The New York Times finally talking
about the issues at Warner Brothers and how they are

(12:09):
deeply connected to David Zaslab and his culture of repressing
creative arts and focusing on low production values because it
comes from reality TV.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
But listen, this could all change if Superman is hit,
and I think it will be. I I do think
Superman will be a will be a big hit and
a shot in the arm for WB Superman.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
I think could be a big hit. I think they
could have a billion dollar thing on their hand. I
would also say, you know, it has been a bad time.
Joker Folioder, the Lord of the Rings anime Companion. I
don't think it's fair to include that in there as
a flop.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
A rights play that was also like that.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
You know, yeah, Lord of the Rings is like that
was not made for that. Companion was an indie movie
Mickey seventeen again, and it's a movie that you should
note that.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
There's so they are having they are experiencing success and
some hits. White Lotus is much in the conversation. The
Gilded Age is up there, Running Point, which they produced for.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
Elementary, one of their biggest things that they produce.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
Yeah, Netflix is Running Point is a hit on Netflix.
The Pit So The Last of Us is upcoming. So
on the streaming side they're having some success. But yes,
it's been a very tough time.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
In the movies also as well, movies like you know, Companion,
Nicky seventeen. In an ideal system, those are not movies
that you need to become hundreds of leagues dollar successes.
Those should be movies that get released because you're doing
blockbuster movies and then you give autas like Boon Juno
a unlimited budget to make something fantastic, so you have

(13:52):
it in your stable, but the way that Warner Brothers
has been run, that is not the case. Finally, this
kind of New York time piece recognizes that changing sentiment
among critics and industry insiders. You know, I'm very interested
to see if this makes any change because for a
long time, the biggest theory, and we've talked about it

(14:14):
on here before, is that Zaslav was essentially skinning Warner
Brothers for parts to resell it, potentially to Universal. That's
the rumbling that's been going on in Hollywood, and it
will be interesting to see that. But you know what
we got Minecraft coming up. I have seen it. It's fun,
it's cute, very different from what the trailer's kind of portrayed.

(14:35):
Is made by Jared Hurst, the director of Napoleon, Dynamite,
and you know, gentlemen, Broncos a bunch of other great movies.
But I think that could be a soft start. I
think that could do well for them. I think it
could have legs and get them to Superman. So it'll
be interesting to see. But even if both of those
movies do well, get rid of David Zaslav.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
I think here's the thing. It's not a zaz Lov problem.
It's it's a structure of the business problem. Because whoever,
if Zaslavl was jettisoned, whoever replaced him, would have the
exact same marching orders, which is, cut costs, get hits,

(15:16):
get big hits, but do it for much cheaper than
we're doing. Sell off some of this stuff and figure
out how to lower costs. They would all be doing
the same thing. So it's really it's the shape of
the business. Sadly it's and it's less about any one
person and more about the incentives in the industry overall.

(15:38):
You know, the one bright spot in all of this
is Apple, who remains committed to losing billions of dollars
to cost cinema. But and and you know, but like
how often and how how much longer can that really continue?
So we will watch this with much interest, take a break,

(16:00):
and we'll be right back. Next up new Thunderbolts news.

(16:23):
So the teaser trailers for the Thunderbolts, including the the
wonderfully created and much loved a twenty four trailer out
there in the world. But a new clip still from
Thunderbolts is out there, and it shows in a shot

(16:45):
that previously featured task Masters standing with the rest of
the Thunderbolts. It shows in that very same scene that
task Master is not there. Now, Oga Crylenko's task Master
was not announced in the Doomsday announcement, unlike many of
her Thunderbolts co stars. So what does this mean? I

(17:06):
have a theory, But do you have a theory, Rosie?
What does this mean?

Speaker 2 (17:10):
My my cynical theory is that she didn't test well,
so they cut her out the movie like sadly, I
think that can happen. I think this is a cost
that is very, very stacked with a lot of different people,
and she was not particularly a hit in Black Widow,
though I would love to see I get a second TRANCEA.
So that's my cynical, non story based version. But what's

(17:30):
your what's your story based theory?

Speaker 1 (17:33):
My story based theory is that task Master is only
briefly a member of the Thunderbolts and Splits and and
to me that would totally If that's the case, that
totally tracks with task Masters. Oh yeah, personality is a
comics character. Task Master is about the money. Task Master

(17:56):
is not trying to be a villain for being a villain,
you know, it's like to be a villain or trying
to be a hero, to be a hero, task Master
is here to train your henchmen for cash. And if
you try to say to task Master, hey, we need
to fight century this like god powered, very very deadly

(18:16):
and destructive super villain, task Master would be like, what
are you paying me? And if the answer is well,
we're just doing it because it needs to be done
to save the.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
World as yeah, like before you're going to jail, Tosmos
is like yeah, task Master would be like cash me
see you later.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Yeah, like exactly, cut the checker. I'm not doing it.
So I think for me it would make sense that
task Master is for task Master to be only very
briefly a member of the Thunderbolts because it's not lucrative,
there's no money.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
I think that's really true. I also like that because
something that MCU has done really well, including you know,
the kind of changing personalities of heroes, like the original
version of doctor Strange compared to where he ended up
in Infinity War, Endgame Multiverse Madness is very different. I
love the kind of more freaky comics version that we

(19:10):
get of him now. So I would love to see
them kind of reimagine Taskmaster to be a little bit
more like the comics. I also somebody one of our
super producers put in the dark as well, like did
Century delete her?

Speaker 1 (19:22):
You know?

Speaker 2 (19:23):
I think there's fun options that this could be. I
also think that it raises a really important question, which
is like where are studios at nowadays with promotion, where
like people are catching this kind of stuff like is
it a spoiler? Also, how does it feel to be
a actor in a ensemble movie and essentially be removed

(19:44):
from the promotion if you're still in the film, Like
does that become a problem for you? Do you have
less say nowadays? Because it's the MCU, it's essentially a
modern day studio system. I think that's kind of interesting
that you can just essentially discard someone who is in
now something like you know, a San Diego Comic Con
esque announcement, and then you know, a month before the

(20:05):
movie comes out, they're not in the trailer anymore. It's
an interesting conversation. Tab I'd love to hear Olga talk
about it up next.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
We need diverse books day tell us about.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
This, Rosie, Yes, so the nonprofit we need diverse Books
has actually been doing amazing work for years now, but
they are launching the inaugural We Need Diverse Books Day.
It's going to be on April third, twenty twenty fifth,
to highlight the importance of reading books that reflect our
beautifully diverse world. This is very in line with what
we do at Extra Vision. It's a big part of

(20:37):
what our discord loves, and they're basically just going to
be recommending titles for all ages, sharing resources on where
to find diverse books, encouraging everyone to read books by
different kinds of people that tell different kinds of experiences.
And to celebrate the first We Need Diverse Books Day
and ten years of the nonprofit, they're actually donating ten
thousand titles in twenty twenty five dischools and libraries. If

(21:01):
you want to help, requesting a diverse book at your
local library or buying from an independent bookstore is always away,
and share your recommendations on social media with hashtag Diverse
Books Day. And that's what the great org behind the
Days suggests. So yeah, make sure if you look this up,
you're going to see a lot of your favorite authors
are already involved. And in twenty twenty five, feels more

(21:23):
needed than ever, so just wanted to highlight that. And yeah,
obviously we'll be in the discord on April talking about
our favorite books.

Speaker 1 (21:31):
And finally, Nintendo Direct. The Nintendo Direct event has occurred
and lots of fun games have been announced. Any ones
that stick out.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
To you, Rosie, There was some definitely some funny stuff
in this. I thought it was hilarious how they kind
of like slipped Metroid Prime for in between like a
Disney Cafe announcement and somebody else because everyone that is
what many many and Nintendo Direct fans are watching for.
Looks great. I will say super producer Commm was not
as excited as she thought she would be. Felt like

(22:04):
she felt like it was more of like a reskin
than anything like fresh or new Pokemon Legends still looking great.
I love those obviously, biggest one for our discord and
for just me and you personally. Jason Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Classic kind of beat them up double Dragon style, and
they are crazy characters, like you're playing as Phila Vel,

(22:26):
you're playing as Nova, Like the eight bit sprites are
so gorgeous. I think this game is going to take
over the Switch and the Internet. When it drops this
year at the holiday period. I can't wait for that.
And a surprising Contender, which A Boo immediately sent to
me and was like, I know this is going to
be your next biggest game, and he was correct. Is

(22:48):
from the publisher of Stardu Valley Chucklefish, and it's called
Witchbrook and it is a kind of three D eight
bit sprite magical school life sim where you live in
a kind of Kiki's delivery service. It looks inspired, it

(23:08):
looks beautiful. You get to fly a broom, you get
to learn magic, you get to cook. It is absolutely
going to take six years of my life when it
drops in winter this year. So I think those were
kind of the biggest. Also, something I love because I
have a very active Switch family online account where you
pay for the year and you can have up to
eight people on it. They have because this was all

(23:30):
Switched one news. We're going to get that Switch to
news coming soon. But one of the things that they
announced was virtual game cards, which basically mean if you
buy a game digitally, as many of us do, you
can share it with anyone on your family account for
free for two weeks. So I thought that was a
cool addition, and I will look forward to sharing my
games with my pals and my friends.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
Finally, huge Yeo shows huge Geez. A Legend of Zelda
live action film has been confirmed, with a release date
March twenty six, twenty twenty seven, and a director West
Ball of the Maze Runner and Kingdom of the most
recent Planet of the Apes movie, Kingdom of the Planet
of the Apes fame. This is huge news now that

(24:18):
date March twenty six, twenty twenty seven, feels a little soon,
but tremendous, tremendous news. I am tremendously excited. I can't
wait to see yes movie.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
I think Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is
like an intelligent epic blockbuster and I love to see
that take. I would love to see a Zelda live
action movie come to Fruition. It feels almost like it
will never happen, but I love to see it. I
think Nintendo's on a role with movies and with branding,
with the incredible theme parks they have now at Universal,

(24:53):
So I'm excited to see this happen and it will
be very interesting. Will we get Hunter Schaeffer or Zelda
that that's the fan casting everyone's been wanting, so I
would expect to see casting start coming out as we
head into summer.

Speaker 1 (25:06):
