Speaker 1 (00:00):
On today's episode, we're talking about Ghosts of Yota from
the Latest State of Play and lots more. Hello, my
(00:22):
name is Jason mctepsion and I'm Joel Monique and welcome
back to text our vision of podcast where we dive deep.
It's your favorite shows, movies, comics and pop culture. Coming
over my our podcast where we're bringing you three.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Episodes a week.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Plus it's Saturday, so it's nuts can be all.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
In today's previously on episode, we're catching up on the
biggest geek news of the week, including d Rex He's
wrecking the d box office. Okay, it's crazy. People love
Jurassic Park. They don't care how good that movie is.
Plus some stuff about Dune three.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
First, let's talk about the Jurassic World Rebirth box office numbers.
Fo Jurassic World Rebirth box office numbers great, the are
you huge? People love dinosaurs? The world loves dinosaurs three
hundred and eighty million currently that's globally since its debut
last week. This surpasses what two thousand and one is.
(01:21):
Jurassic Park three made at the box office three hundred
and sixty nine three hundred and sixty five point nine
million over the same amount of time take into account inflation.
But Joelle, what do we think is gonna happen now
that Superman has hit theaters?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Listen, I do think we're gonna see a fall off
coming up shortly, specifically because Superman is so kid friendly.
I think Drastic Park was an easy movie to take
your kids too. They can enjoy, you know, not worry
about too much stuff. Superman is also great and super
entertaining and fun. So I think Drastic Park has had
a high two weeks. I'm sure it'll trade off slowly.
(01:56):
I would like to see. I'm curiously how long this
stays in theaters for right, Typically, I think, you know,
a month long, maybe month and a half long run
for something like this, and then you know, previously we
see a rush to VOD. I don't know if Warner
Brothers is going to rush to vo D this time.
I would like to see it have a long time
(02:17):
in the theater because once August hits, you know, then
we're getting into much more mature films. I'm thinking of
there's like Naked Gun and then yes, the children that
run out of the school weapons and so like, there
will be time for rebound potentially, especially a Fantastic four underperforms.
So yeah, I imagine this will cross the five hundred
(02:40):
million dollar line. Will it reach a billion globally before
at least theaters? Maybebe, but I would lean now I could.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
I think it could get there, but I also doubt
it up next Superman. Speaking of Superman, Matt Maloney of
Puck and the Town podcast has reported on the pay
structure for the top stars of James Guns Superman film
(03:08):
and headline. Nicholas Holt gets more than Superman and Lois
Lane combined two million compared to seven hundred and fifty
k for Corn Sweat and Brosnahan. Now, people might be like,
oh my god, that's what That's terrible, Yes, but it
(03:28):
kind of goes in line with the strategy, honestly, that
Marvel had had put forward, especially towards the later stages
of Phase one and throughout phases two and three, which
is leaning on lesser known talent with some big names
in supporting roles, and you give those big names more
money upfront. That would be Nicholas Holt and then your
(03:49):
key players Corn Sweat and Brosnahan while they get it. Listen,
nobody is sneezing at seven hundred and fifty thousand, I
certainly wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Not even a little bit, not even.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Got it where the tights?
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Give me those tights.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
But if this movie performs up to the benchmarks that
they are hoping for, you know, look for Superman and
Lewis Lane to share in this success significantly off the
back end of this. So while it looks weird on paper,
kind of industry standard and not that big a deal.
(04:30):
Any any thoughts.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
On controversial opinion, I think this is the right decision
on first of all, Nicholas Holt is performing with a
capital p okay, and he's giving a lot to let Bainter.
It's so good. So he came in and earned his
eating uh crap. Who actor from the first Superman who
way phoned it in got called out later for it.
(04:52):
Oh my god, Oh Marvin Marlin brand.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Let my son, I send you forth into the galaxy
my son. I mean they only shoot him from the neck,
that's how.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Little he like. Christopher Reed later goes on a talk show,
real actor and he doesn't care. Okay, Christopher was mad
about it. We didn't get that this time, which I
feel really good about. The Other thing, I think too,
is like it's better when you don't know the actors
as well, Like I know Rachel from Miss Marvel but
(05:30):
sorry Marvelous, Miss Mabel, we got there and she's good
in that, but it doesn't all distracted to her for
me seeing her as lois and the same with I
don't really have a lot of history with David either,
and he's a great superman, seamlessly blends in. I'm sure
they have great back end, which all you really need
back and I'll put you into infinity. It's almost better
(05:51):
than getting that up front money.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Let me ask you this, what was your just to
kind of like hammer home the point. What was when
you thought about corn Sweat? What was the thing that
you're like, oh, I remember him from this literally nothing.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I was like, who is David corn Sweat? I said,
I was spelling it. I was like, corn Sweat? Where
is he for Idaho? Is he where? Lots of questions? Yeah, no,
And then so I've seen him since in a couple
of different things, the memes and stuff, and of like, Okay,
I've definitely seen you around before you're in Twisters, but the.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Twisters is the one. Yeah, And there's not a lot
of other stuff.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
I was talking to a friend and they were like,
in watching Twisters, you would never think that, like, oh,
this is the star. This is the person who's gonna
step up and have like the next big moment. And
I agree, it's amazing that they found him and he's
like perfect for the roles. He's amazing. So hopefully he
gets paid a lot of money. And you know if
depending on how many movies you signed up for, this
(06:49):
could be great leverage for later. So I don't think
people need to be upset about this.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
I will go out on a limb and say they
will make several more Superman movies and several other tie
in movies in which David Gord's what will Apira Superman?
He will be fine. The rent is gonna get paid
for both him and Rachel Up. Next interesting tidbit Sinners costumes.
Costumes from the movie Sinners included stuff that was repurposed
(07:16):
from Marvel's Probably Never Gonna Get Made Blade movie. This
is according to a story from Entertainment Weekly, thanks to
costume designer Ruth Carter, Sinners has a connection to the
the seemingly now full dead, not undead, but fully fully
in the ground dead mahrschel Ali led Blade movie that
(07:40):
again I don't think is ever gonna get Maid. That
is really cool. The leather looks all that. Carter said
the filming needed to start. They didn't have all the
costumes together, so they reached out to Marvel and were like, Hey,
what's going on.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
With the Blade?
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Can we see some of the Blade look books? And
turns out they had that stuff pulled him out of
storage and that may be all we see of Marvel's Blade. Wow,
at least this iteration is the costumes in.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
St afterssying Jurassic Park, I felt more robbed than ever
that we don't have Maharshali in a leading role as
a vampire. I was like, look at this man has
obviously booked up for Blade, Like the body has been
worked on, it's 's t u and the skin is
glowing and he's It's so upsetting to me that we
could might never get a good Blade with Mahrsali in
(08:32):
the lead. I do think it's I think because Ruthy
Carter was working on the costumes for Blade, right, so
these are her costumes that she was acting permission to
use them elsewhere. Listen, costumes looked great we love the
red suit, we love the color theory throughout Sinners. It's
not enough, This is not enough of what might have
been of Blade for me. Please figure this out, Marvel.
(08:55):
You have one job, and it is to figure out Blade.
You have the perfect after figuring someone can write this,
I believe in you.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
That said, like if it was truly and which is
what it seems to be, that the script just could
never get there good like, don't do a bad believe.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
You know what hand of God? If all the only
reason was we just can't figure out the script. To
take your time, baby, like I we a bad Blade
movie would. Yeah, you can't afford another bad black property.
Let's be honest.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
One million present. Let's take a quick break when we're
at back with some music.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Ad break.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
The long awaited sequel to Ghost of Yeshima has just
dropped a new trailer on us. At Sony's July State
of Play, we got an in depth state of play
announcement on Ghosts of Yo Taie, a new game from
Sucker Punch Perductions again, the sequel to the incredible, amazing,
(10:04):
unbelievably beautiful Ghost of Vyshima, and it looks like the
sequel that you want to Ghost of Tushima. You've got
the Kurosawa mode, that black and white always coming back.
You've got the same kind of beautiful, immersive open world,
multiple ways to play.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
The sword play is there.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
This is a game that took over my life from
I would say about three months, so I'm super excited
about this. Did you play Ghost of Tushima?
Speaker 3 (10:32):
I was inside the house during the pandemic, and that
game brought me back outside. It was amazing. I was
in photo mode, I was messing with shadows. I was
trying to get perfect uh one cut Samurai things like,
oh man, did I finish it?
Speaker 2 (10:46):
No?
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Did I love it? Absolutely well? I played this one
for sure. The Teacher Wants Nabe feature where you could
just be riding around field Japan listening to low fi
beats is mind bogglingly good. Like bless you whoever was like,
you know what, we should team up? And I also
like for the black and white, for the Cursaala mode.
In black and white, Uh, they are actually working with
(11:07):
Krisalas like Foundation, so they went directly to the source
to make sure that the black and white was accurate.
And I really appreciate Uh. And whenever we're trying to
honor artists, making sure that the folks that are maintaining
their legacy are involved. I think is really beautiful. So
I'm excited for this one. Okay, I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
And then finally Dune three.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Oh, bring up boo it we got the title.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Boo, we get a boo Yes, get in here to
talk about any Villeneuve's final movie in the trilogy. Dune
three will be shot in IMAX, So prepared to be
absolutely dwarfed the size of the sandworm as you sit
in the theater your thoughts on Dune three appearing. The
(11:50):
official title is Dune three and will be based on
the second book in the Dune series, Dune Messiah, in
which your favorite your favorite leader kind of goes a
little left. So it'll be interesting to see how they
choose to adapt this. But I am super excited.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
Yeah, this is incredibly exciting. And here's what I'll say.
There's a lot of chatter online, especially within the online
Dune fandoms, that this is a scary title change for
the movie, that what if this isn't based on Messiah,
what if Danny Villeve is diverting his story from the books,
and there have been rumors pure speculation. I don't think
(12:35):
this is based off of anything. That vill Neve might
actually be introducing elements from Children of Dune, the third
book in the series, in this movie, and that's why
they don't want to call it Dune Messiah and tie
it too strongly to the book. He might be introducing
other elements from other books in this story. My opinion
on that is it's so early. Who cares, and like
(12:57):
titles change, and this could be anything. This could be
a creative choice that actually tells us something about the movie,
or it could just be like a exec choice to
be like, people will be confused if you name it
not the third movie. We have to sell it as
the third movie, you know. Like, I don't think that
it's worth sweating over what this name change means or
(13:20):
what it means for the creative direction of the movie.
I trust Villa Love, and I think we're in good hands.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
I think we should trust Villa. Note two, he seems
really keyed in so far. But given the time jump
at the end of two, which I know threw some
book lovers off with the because baby Girl's not supposed
to speak yet, right, I'm a very passive Dune fan,
but I remember people being a little up in arms.
They were like, oh, it's it's too early.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
There are some changes with Alia. It's not necessarily there
is a time difference. It's actually condensed rather than a
two year jump, but it's a nine month or a
couple of month jump. So yes, things will be different,
and I think like as Dune fans, we will have
to brace ourselves or changes. This won't be Messiah one
for one translated to the screen. But I think the
(14:04):
first two movies were not Duned by Frank Krbert translated
one for one to the screen, and yet I think
they fully honored the original story, the original themes, and
the original messages. And again I trust me enough to
do that again for book two.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
As a fellow dunehead, Aboo, put your Warner Brothers executive
had on. Oh no, just pretend. What do you think
an exec is?
Speaker 3 (14:31):
What do you think.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
They what do you think they would say about any
particular concerns about the way Dune Messiah and a potential
Dune sequel subverts people's expectations about the heroes and the
villains that the audience has come to be attached to.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
I think they're definitely again, this not based on anything,
just feels like something in the air. If I were
an exec, I'd be worried that I had a super
star like Timothy Challo May leading my franchise and that
the book that it's based off of turns that hero
on its head and then abandons that hero. You know,
(15:19):
I'm trying to talk around spoilers a little bit here,
but like sure, I think I as an exec would
be worried by the by the what star power the
second movie has. If it's not Timothy Shalomy that we're
selling as palmud the chosen one who leads the second movie,
it's gonna be's in.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
Day the teen share characters so much at the end,
at least again, from my very peripheral understandings of Dune,
she seems like she's in a much higher power position
to make like power moves and plays and potentially lead
her own sort of faction of things. I think if
I was an executive in the room with the booth
that's I would say, it's like we guys in Diet,
don't worry, we can make this work.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
I would I think that's probably all right. I to
really trust, you know, having loved the first two films
and the changes they made, I think really made sense
and made the films more understandable as a film and
can preserved the feeling and the themes and the general
(16:24):
direction and story arcs of all the characters and the
plot itself while changing things around and at times changing
them significantly. So I trust villa Eneuve to figure it out.
That said, I do think that this is going to
be his biggest challenge yet.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Yeah, and I'm interested to see how it. Landing the
plane is the hardest part. You're getting that third movie here.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
Is this is a very Yeah, there are a lot
of crosswinds that vill Love is going to have to
fly this plane through.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
