Speaker 9 (04:02):
I'm sure, okay, Charlie.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Sorry, I didn't mean to kill the vibe. I think

don't trust me. They're gonna love you.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
But your dad's a lawyer, so he's gonna think I'm
some loser.

Speaker 9 (04:27):
You wouldn't think that.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
What'd you tell him? I do well?

Speaker 9 (04:31):
He knows you're pursuing criminal justice and saving up to
go back to school for it, So you didn't mention
what my actual job is doesn't matter.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
It matters if you're ashamed of me, are you? I
think you're ashamed now you're trying to deflect on me.

Speaker 9 (04:52):
Can we not turn this into another dribe where we're
arguing the whole time?

Speaker 3 (04:56):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 9 (04:57):
A job is a job? Why are you letting it do?
Find who you are? My dad respects a self starter.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
And that is what you are.

Speaker 10 (05:05):
I don't know how to be around someone like your dad,
all responsible and shit and nice.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
According to you, all.

Speaker 9 (05:13):
He wants to know about you is that you take
care of me.

Speaker 8 (05:16):
So take care of me and stop being a little bitch. Okay, okay,
slug Bug Blue, Oh what was that for?

Speaker 9 (05:34):
Slug Bug Blue? You don't know slug bug?

Speaker 3 (05:37):
What the hell is slugbug?

Speaker 9 (05:40):
It's a game. If you see a Volksagen beetle, you
shout out slug bug plus the color. Whoever does it
first gets to punch the other person in the arm.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
How do you not know this?

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Hey, I'm a lover, not a fighter. I don't need
your violent games.

Speaker 9 (05:54):
It's a universal game. You didn't have it grown up
in Korea.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Slug Bug White, Oh.

Speaker 9 (06:01):
I didn't hate you that hord. That's not a Volkswagon.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Okay, floor Rang Color, it's maroon. I get two punches now.

Speaker 9 (06:11):
You can't just make up your own rules.

Speaker 8 (06:16):
Don't tickle me.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Stop.

Speaker 9 (06:19):
Hey, watch the road, mister.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Hmmm, you're so good.

Speaker 9 (06:33):
Oatmeal raidin Yeah, this is my grandma's recipe.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Out of all the things you've baked. Why, it's the
first time I've tasted these you'se are smacking?

Speaker 9 (06:42):
Oh no, I guess I really only make him for

Speaker 11 (07:14):
Yeah, yeah, okay, there is heavy traffic on your route.
You should reach your destination by seven.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Yeah, we don't need to know that slug bug.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
You just saw.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Whoa whoa whoa idiot? Where the hell does he think
he's going? I think that's a woman? Yeah, well she
sucks at driving.

Speaker 9 (08:21):
She's older. Okay, Jill, have some patience.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Why are you always defending the other person? Can you
just take my side?

Speaker 9 (08:30):
It wasn't that big of a deal. You need to
road rage over it.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
So what if she's old? I'm tired of all these
old people on the road. She's clearly blind as a
rat and shouldn't be legally driving.

Speaker 9 (08:43):
Blind as a bat?

Speaker 3 (08:45):
What are you doing?

Speaker 9 (08:47):
It was just blind as a bat?

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Is the same who cares. Don't rats have shitty vision too,
scrambling around in the dark.

Speaker 9 (08:57):

We're almost there. I know.

Speaker 12 (09:04):

the reminder. Do you want the air conditioner on? What
do you want the air conditioner on?

Speaker 9 (09:16):

out of this car?

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Why? No, we're almost there, you said, before you get
your car fixed? What are you doing?

Speaker 9 (09:34):

your family. You don't think I'm good enough?

Speaker 1 (10:30):

Speaker 11 (10:54):
He's up your phone or at least text me back.
Would you like to send it a change of what

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
