Speaker 1 (00:00):
Previously on your morning show with Michael dil Cho, and we.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Were talking about birthdays and I still haven't given his
his age, but I want to tell a quick d
W story. So, and I wasn't the biggest. When I
was very young, Indie racing was huge and I knew
them all, loved it. In fact, my brother when he
first got his driver's license, we go for drives and
(00:26):
he was Vic Mers, oh really like Rick Mers, pick
myersn't even take the turns real fast, but Rick Rick
Meres won it. A J. Foyt, the Unser brothers, Mario,
the Andretti's. I mean, you know, that was bigger than life.
I don't think younger people today can even relate to that,
but I remember there was Richard Patty came along like
(00:51):
kind of when I was early in high school, and
I knew him mainly from you know, the goodies commercials,
the aspirin because nobody watch what we called at that
time stock car racing. Now nobody watches Indy and of
course NASCAR is everything. So not until I met my wife,
and that is one thing my father in law turned
(01:13):
me onto. You come to my house as a baseball
game on a basketball game on, a hockey game or
a football game on. That's it, depending on what. Or
maybe golf the four seasons. Yeah, and maybe even a
little Frankie Valley in the background. And then I'd go
to my father in law's house and NASCAR was always on,
and you know, then I got it, got re reintroduced
(01:37):
to racing. And people forget this now. I mean a
was Darrel Walter Prigory champion, yes, but he was like
the Raiders. He was like the bad guy. People forget
that he was the villain. Oh. Absolutely, he was the
intimidator before Daryl, right, so naturally I gravitated towards him
(01:59):
and he was my Sorry flash forward. Now I'm at
Christmas in America. I don't know what it is now,
probably seven years ago, could be more. And Christmas in
America is done in two acts. It's a live radio
broadcast and then it becomes a national radio show. And
so in between acts, David Zanati comes from backstage and
(02:22):
he's mingling with some people. So I thought, well, I'll
go over and hug my friend and you know, encourage him.
I thought the first first act was great. There's a
gentleman standing with a woman and they're facing away from me,
and I'm kind of standing to the side of them
and behind and waiting for my chance to talk to David.
And the person turns around. Now what I didn't even
(02:45):
know Daryl Walter lived in Nashville Number one, all right?
What would he be doing at Christmas in America? I
didn't know he was a Christian. It's his hometown two
all right, So but I don't know that I you know,
and he turns around. Well, and I've said this to you.
A major star can be right in front of me
and I don't even blink. Sure, but a major athlete
(03:06):
it makes me speechless. Well, I cannot tell you. And
it was because A who was expecting it, And B
it was Daryl Waltrip for crying how loud it was
Daryl Waldon. It's like when I was at the Disney
Store and I bumped into Chris Scott Hamilton. I mean
that was it, you know. So I just look at
him and he goes, I'm Daryl, and he goes to
(03:27):
shake my hand and I'm literally like a Serenite Live character.
I can't speak. You go amanamenamena, and you know, and
when I get in those moments, I'm like staring at
his hand. I'm going to test the hand that was
on the stearing wheels, looking down his feet. That's the
feet we're on the pedals. I'm like in a full
spin here as he's trying to talk to me. I
don't even know what I was saying. I was just
glazed over. And he goes, this is my wife, Stevie.
(03:51):
It was still beautiful. And I looked at her and
I finally uttered words, guess what came out of my mouth? What?
This is the most embarrassed moment of my life. I
don't think you're ready for it. I said, you're married
to Daryl Waltrip. Well, she cracked up. She goes, yes,
I am. I have been for a long time, and
(04:12):
that's why I was. Now flash forward, we're at a
wedding together. Now we're friends. Now we're family. That was
an awkward way to meet, but now we're friends. We're family.
So I have one of those cars that has the
automatic ignition that starts by your key. I'm at the wedding.
At the wedding, I feel very overdressed, okay, And I
tell Darryl I said, I almost wore exactly what you
(04:34):
were wearing. I should have done that because the wedding
was in a church, but the reception was in a barn.
How do you dress for such a thing. And then
when I'm at the wedding, I'm realizing, wow, I'm the
only guy wearing a suit. So I said, Daryl, I'm
going to swing home and I'm going to change real quick,
and we'll see at the reception. I think you look
five dwey gonna go and change. So andrews in the car.
(04:57):
I pull in the driveway, I just leave the cars.
I'd be right back, and I run in and I
just switched to kind of like a like jeans with
like a casual blazer that kind of a look, kind
of a Western. Not realizing that when I took off
my soup pants, the car keys are in it, but
the car's still running. I put on my jeans. So
(05:17):
then I get in the car and I drive to
this barn and Leapersport, and then I turned the ignition
off and that's when I realize, oh wait, I'm kind
of parked, funny, let me straighten out. And I went
to start the car and it wouldn't start. And then
after a few minutes, because the last thing you think
about is well, you don't have the keys in your
pants anymore. So the whole time at this wedding reception,
I know, I'm stranded. What do I do? My kids
(05:38):
aren't of age to drive yet. How do I get
my keys? No way? So I'm sitting talking to Daryl
and Michael Carr was at that wedding. His daughter was
the one that married my friend's son. And uh boy,
what a treasure he is, love crucified a rose. So
many great songs know him by the scars. And I'm
sitting with d W and Stevie, and so d W
looks at me and I bring up that, you know,
(05:58):
I'm stranded. I don't know what I'm going to do it.
I'm like, keys are in my pants at home. This
was prior to Uber too, probably oh well, I mean no,
I probably could have. Maybe there was Uber. And so
d W looks at me and goes, well, take my car.
I said, what I go? He just hands me the keys.
He goes, just take my car home, And I thought, wow,
(06:20):
I mean that's generous, right, you know? And then Stevie
looks at me. He goes and be careful. That's his baby.
He's had like this one car that he really loves
and has kept and it is it's immaculate, it looks
brand new. And so then I don't know. In the
course of the evening, we start telling some stories about
me getting pulled over and then my car accident, you know,
(06:40):
and all this stuff. Then about thirty minutes later, the
bride and the groom are dancing and d w walks
up to me. I'm standing there watching this beautiful father
daughter moment, and he goes, Michael, oh, yeah, I no
longer feel comfortable. You're driving my car. Give me those
keys back. I word of God. Stevie and I will
(07:01):
drive you home. Then you can get you can easy
come back and get you go. I no longer feel comfortable.
So then the whole evening goes on, and it ends
with Andrew and I getting in the back seat with
Stevie and Daryl Waltrip and I'm getting an uber from
Darryl Waltrip. The legend and the whole let me tell you,
(07:24):
people always say, did he drive fat? It was the
smoothest you want to talk about a moment where you're
just like, you know, nothing can happen to me right now?
Could I be any safer? Darryl Waltrip is driving me,
and I'm looking at his hands on the steering wheel,
and at this point I know, I'm like, Daryl, I
still look at your hands on a steering wheel, and
I'm marvel and I go, were you kind of a
(07:48):
ten and two guy? And then he starts giving me
a lesson because all the kids today are driving three
and nine or ten and two. Sure, And he taught
me a trick. It's one hand eleven. And he was saying, now,
remember they go around the track counterclockwise. But basically all
you do is point your fist where you want to go.
(08:12):
It's not even anything you got to think about. And
I thought it's brilliant. And then I got my car
and I did it. It's a great story. But Daryl
Walter d w look at how I met him, We
become friends. He's gonna give me his car that changed
the tires in a pit. He's gonna give me his
car that after hearing some stories, he no longer feels comfortable.
I got out of him, and I thought, only in America,
(08:34):
only as a child of God can this happen? People
that I grew up. It's like it's like when I'm
hanging out with john Ford Coley. I mean, I can
see myself sitting Indian style in my room listening to
his albums. Now I'm friends with him, but I mean,
out of all my stories, I got a newberg from
Darryl waltr that's a very good story. The champ d W.
Bug Boo Booge book at He's seventy eight years old today,
(08:57):
I'm so glad you were fourn first. So glad you're alive.
Can't believe you didn't trust me with your car, but
thanks for the uber ride home.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
