Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, Steve, it's time now to check your voicemail

(00:02):
at eight seven seven twenty nine. Steve, you can call
us and leave a message and you just might hear
your call on the air. This is from Selena Steve
who left a message about grief. Take a listen.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Hey, Steve. My name is Selena. I'm thirty four years
old and I recently lost my mom. Is about to
be a year in December, and I find myself really
like plumaging into grief and just having that like, dang,
you really let me girl. You always seem to give
really good advice and I want you to listen to

(00:34):
see you all. But so I was just calling because
I wanted to know if you can give me some
advice because I know she's nine times out of saying
she would agree with what you had to say. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Well, you know, grief is different for everybody. There's no
manual for grief. Grief is oftentimes just the miss sing
of love and that I don't know that that goes away.
I still grieve the loss of my mother and it's

(01:07):
been twenty eight years. I still grieve that. Here's what
you have to do, though, and I learned this at
my mom's funeral. I was sitting there and I was
at the most broken moment I've ever been in. And
the pastor stood up after everybody had talked, and he

(01:29):
was talking to the five of us, the six of us,
my father, and the five children, and he said, I
know this is the worst day of your life, but
I want you to take a moment to turn around
and look at this church. And for the first time
I turned around and looked at the church. It was packed.
The balcony standing room only. He said, we got the

(01:49):
overflow room downstairs. It's packed two there's no more room.
He said, we have put speakers outside because people are
in the park lot on the street to come to
pay respect to your mother. Your mother has been in
the soul saving Sunday school business for forty years. He said.

(02:12):
She done taught every hustler, gambler, pimp, servicemen, congressman and
mayor to come through this city. He said, Now, as
you sit there and you grieve the loss of her,
I want you all to think of all of the
lives that she affected. That's why this church is so

(02:33):
full right now, he said. Remember all the great things
she taught you. He said, now listen to this. When
you do that, joy and depression cannot reside in the
same space. And for that brief moment, for the first
time in a week since my mama had died, I smiled.
I had not smiled the entire week. And then he

(02:57):
was right because I looked at the procession of people
that was coming around to view my mama's body. Gangsters, hustlers, pimp,
dope boys, I mean, hey man, and they all stop
to my brothers. They was my big brother's friends. A
lot of them was mine. Hey man, your mama tried
to save me. Man, I appreciate your mama. Your mama
told me about the Lord. Is that the only reason

(03:19):
I'm still here. I had a dude come see my mama.
Been on the run thirty years. He came back to
Cleveland to see my mama and then he had to
get up out of town. He's still on the run.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
So it's good to save you from.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Brother stood up and husband and they missed it. That
was a gangster moment. But to her, think of the
joyous thing she has taught you, and smile about it,
and you still gonna share tears about it. Everybody on
this show Shirley Carler, the lost their mama. They will

(03:56):
tell you Tommy lost his dad. Ain't that ain't going
nowhere now? Every day it's gonna be days, man. But
as the time gets only been a year, it's gonna
get better for you. Just hanging that.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, hopefully Selena can take something from that jew.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
And here's one other thing. This is just a little
gangstous thing to keep with you. This is what keeps me.
If anybody say anything about my mama, I slapped all
the flavor out they mouth on site, on site to
this day. I don't care who you are, open your
mouth if you want to. I'm gonna give you some

(04:36):
of this grief today.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
All right, coming up next, Have a good day, Selena. Yeah,
thank you for your call, Selena, and our condolences. Of course,

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
