(00:00):
Welcome into the Oh Show on iHeartRadio. My name is Paul James. I
am your host. I am joinedby coach A. J. Prett,
the former offensive coordinator at Kent Stateand Western Kentucky University. And next week
we're gonna talk a lot about thatWestern Kentucky offense. Man. They're explosive,
aren't they They They can score points, they can dial up some ballplays.
(00:22):
We'll talk a little bit about thatlast week game. It's good to
see you, Paul. Yeah, come over here today. What is this
our fourth show of the year, third and fourth? What I'm losing count
but this is number four? Andyou you got you got your parking space
today? I did, but itwas kind of a bittersweet drive over here.
We got out of the nineties. It's like we could play the British
(00:43):
Open out there today at soupy lowceiling missed. Of course. I got
my sunglasses on, like I'm misterpetty driving cards and having my shades on.
But I was listening to Jimmy Buffetton the way over, what a
loss? What at icon so onhim than little Bob Seeger on the way
over, and getting ready to talkabout a lot of football with my friend.
(01:07):
Well tell you, I had achance to listen to your show,
your postgame show last Friday night, and it'll be on again every Friday night
during the football season, and Igotta kick. You were talking about our
good friend Kirk Richards, and Ihad to note what his new nickname is,
roller Dog Richards. Hey man, they got the longest postgame show of
(01:30):
any crew every I think it's likeforty eight minutes long from the last play
of the game until they got transferredover here to start the show. But
now greatly sad time he wants totake every minute he gets, doesn't he
But Roller Dog Richards will be joiningh hopefully coach tomorrow night on the post
game show. But yeah, wegot to talk a lot about that Buckeye
game on Saturday. You know,it's been interesting this week to hear a
(01:53):
lot of the players talk about thatwhat happened Saturday in that game, exactly
what they had planned for and we'reready to do and how it went.
But a lot of as as KateStover said yesterday, a lot of guys
that sit in their basement and playon their keyboards, U decided that it
(02:14):
wasn't a good win for the Buckeyes, and Kate said, you know,
he goes, it's a win andwe're one to oh and there's only one
thing better than being one to oh. And he's absolutely right. And but
coach, it was an interesting game. It was an interesting weekend of college
football. Epic blowouts, slow startsfor the halves, two Heisman candidates on
(02:34):
a team that America thought was donewith football a year ago, and crazy
upsets for week one. What awhat a day? What a weekend?
Days? Yeah? I five.I took Tuesday off to recover from Thursday.
Oh, by the way, I'ma no longer a customer of Spectrum.
(02:54):
Yes, yeahs from him. Iwas just getting into bed and he's
lighting up my phone. What's goingon? Man? So with no ESPN
channels? Uh, you know,my wife's kind of giggling at my childish
reactions. And within twenty four actuallywithin like fourteen hours, I have YouTube
TV. Yeah and you're good now, Yeah, I'm good. It's unlimited
(03:16):
recordings. It's driving my wife nuts. She can't find any show of hers
on there. That's just how it'sgoing to roll against. But listen,
and some people listen to this they'regonna take this the wrong way, and
I'm gonna apologize ahead of time, but it's true. Ryan Day has and
never will turn around and looking thestands and wonder what somebody's opinion is on
(03:37):
how he's coaching and calling a game. And uh never did I, as
a coach ever really have the thoughtis let me ask the fan what they
think? Right now? It goesback to this, And I saw Kirk
Kirk Street made a comment this week. He's right, Uh, yeah,
we want to fire Ryan Day becausewe didn't smoke Indiana on the road by
(04:00):
fifty. And it's it's it's asmall percentage. I mean it's but it's
there, and you know it's it'sit's rat poison. So let's get back
to this game. Yeah, Okay, for perspective and and and I remind
people of this. Two years ago, we did a show after c.
J. Stroud's first started at Minnesota. Yeah, and maybe this guy's not
(04:25):
what we need. We need betterbecause he didn't come out there it was
his first game. We were moreimpressed with mo Ibraham that day than we
were on quarterback if you remember.Yeah, and and mo Ibraham as great
a college back, as he is, was got cut, he's not on
a roster. The other guy's startingquarterback for the Texans as the number two
overall all take in the in thedraft. So calm down, calm down.
(04:49):
So look the Buckeyes. They're oneto zero with a road win in
the Big Ten, with the firsttime quarterback at starting and renew offensive linement.
Fans tend to overreact. Okay,it's one game at a time.
Let's see what happens this week, then we'll worry about next week. Okay.
(05:14):
For perspective, the defense did notallow a touchdown. They have not
given up a touchdown in the twentytwenty three season. Yet they held EU
to a total of one hundred andfifty three yards and they hold Indiana to
four of fifteen on third. Now, so to me, that's what I
(05:35):
see. And the other thing isPaul I look at the positive. You're
never gonna be happy as a coach. It's never good enough because you're chasing
perfection. It don't it doesn't exist. There's a step, there's a play
every game that you go back toand say, what were we doing?
What was he thinking? Is thathow we're coaching this? Because are we
(05:57):
allowing it to happen, but offensively. Paul Plus, I really like what
I saw out of Chip train him. Yeah, he was fun to watch.
What name I'm just talking about,Eyeball Test. He was the best
of the three backs in that game. Kate Stover, he showed up,
he made a play. We knowwhat a great leader he is. Kyle
McCord was twenty of thirty three fortwo thirty nine. Some some things with
(06:23):
his fundamentals. As I went backand watched that game two and a half
times, you know, there's somethings footwork, delivery, kind of got
himself off balanced, not going awayfrom the throw that it's It's very fixable.
It could have been nerves. Buthe's twenty of thirty three for two
thirty nine and really made the onebad decision to throw late over the middle
(06:45):
for the pick. When I lookat defense man Josh Proctor was very impressive
to me. The third now defensethat I spoke about, they did eliminate
the explosion place and they tackled Thiswill come up later. Everybody's it's not
about the plays. I mean,it sometimes comes down to just tackling pad
(07:08):
level on offense. The stuff thatmatters Now, what are the things that
we're a little concerning as predicted Isaid last week, I said, Paul,
here's what I think Ohio State's gonnado on offense. To protect a
young quarterback, three starting offensive lineman. We saw a ton of track scheme
run that we have not seen thelast Urban Meyer Ryan daytime. And they
(07:31):
did a lot of blockdown and pulling, which helps with angles with those younger
linemen. Helps it helps you getinto play action naked boot. They did
that so that that style of playwas not as aggressive. Now I'm not
talking about the run scheme, butthe pass game was not as aggressive as
we saw. Maybe kind of protectMcCord a little bit. Third down that
(07:57):
was the problem. Yeah, twoof twelve. You can't get any rhythm
going two for twelve. Here's theone that cannot happen again. No way,
no way. It ain't about plays. It's about players you can draw
up that you can be the masterof scheme. My question would be,
in really good coaches I've been around, who's touching the ball? Who's touching
(08:20):
it? I mean, that's agreat ball play, but if that kid's
running it, it ain't a greatplay. If that kid's touching the ball.
This has a chance to be asuccessful play. No way, we
can have another game where we seeMarvin Harrison Junior have two touches too.
Now, there was the touch thatwas called back, the play we talked
(08:41):
about affair when he was forced outof bounds, didn't get back in at
Bucca other than special teams. Threetouches offensively, Yeah, so you got
the two most explosive players on theperimeter of the best wide receiver room in
the country that have a total offive touches and about sixty snaps that can't
happen through mistakes with the offensive line. There were some run through mistakes on
(09:03):
third downs that made Ohio State punt, and they had some questionable play at
tackle. We'll see if it getsbetter. They had the one turnover.
Now defensively, the only thing youcan really say there wasn't a takeaway.
They only created seven negative plays andthen special teams the positive. Jaden Fielding
(09:24):
was five for five with pat fieldgoal kicks as a new kicker. The
one glaring mistake was there was twopretty big chunk punt returns that they're gonna
have to get fixed in coverage. But you know. All in all,
Paul, it's it's one and ohthere there are no bad wins. A
win is a win. Now youwant to see yourself do some things better.
(09:46):
Absolutely, but that's fan talk.Coaches. No, a win's a
win, and they'll they'll get better. I'll tell you, Ryan Day,
I heard it. I heard ashow today and he talked a little bit
about the young man from Indiana andthose returns, and he said, yeah,
we made our mistakes, but hesaid he's he's gonna score some touchdowns
and he goes, get ready forthat. He's very talented. He also
said they had no idea that theywere gonna see the triple option the way
(10:09):
they did at the beginning of thegame. He said. Now, he
goes, I'm not gonna fault mycoaching staff for that, because Tim,
because he and Allen have been friendsfor years, and he said, I
know that he likes it, butvery rarely does he run it. And
sure enough, that was what theywanted to scare us with. And he
goes, we dealt with it extremelywell. He said, I give an
(10:31):
a plus to my defense and everybodyfor dealing with the triple option. We
didn't expect it, but he saidhe expected fifteen more offensive plays and that's
one of the reasons why those guysdidn't get as many touches. At least
that's what he said on the radiotoday. He expected seventy five plays plus
and they only got sixty. Sois interesting you got that up. You
(10:52):
got coaches all over the country complainingabout the new clock situation. Offensive coaches,
right, not defensive coaches. Offensivecoach is uh, we'll see.
I mean, I'm we'll see howit goes. It can lesson plays.
Now. The other thing, you'resaying that Indiana wanted to shorten the game,
and I don't know why, OhHigh State and less somebody Indiana let
(11:13):
it out that you're going to gettriple option. And what that does on
defense is it limits the coverage asyou can because you have to play assignment
discipline football, you have responsibility onthe triple option. And for them to
do that and play that well againstthat and not probably preparing for triple option
says a lot about the coaches gettingthose guys ready to play. Yeah,
(11:35):
they did a great job of stayinghome and that was something that I noticed
a lot, especially in the firsthalf and I'm sure that they were pounding
that into the defensive players stay homesday homes day home, because you never
know what you're going to see onthat triple option. But coach, I
wanted to dig through and I wantedto grade some of your points on offense
and defense. You made some reallygood points last week. I noted them,
(11:58):
and I kind of want to wantto get started with that because you
had said that's where we need tobe. This is the thing that we
need to judge this football team on. And first of all, talking about
the defense, number one, yousaid we're gonna have to be an elite
defense to win it all. Didthat team look like an elite defense for
week one of the college football season. Elite cannot be overused because elite is
(12:20):
elite. Last couple of years,Georgia was elite on defense and now Brock
is playing offense. It was agood start. It was a good start
to check that box. That wasa good start. Okay, sunny styles
play, you said that was akey. Well, again, a little
bit tough to judge, but hehad four tackles, a couple were for
(12:41):
negative plays. Obviously, he's verytalented scene option football We're going to see
more obviously the next few weeks, playing in more space. He moved so
fast. He's fun to watch.Shut Down corner Denzel Burke. He played
a good football game. It's justa question mark. I mean he tied.
But the past game from Indian obviously, with what we just talked about,
(13:03):
Indian to try to do offensively,it's going to be coming games that
we see if he's the true shutdownin the past game and what makes for
great coverage, great pass rush?Yeah, absolutely absolutely, limit explosion plays.
Got to give him an a onthat. Oh yeah, I mean
yeah, yes, that answers.Yes, we'll click that one off.
The longest run they gave up waseleven yards. There was one reception over
(13:24):
twenty for twenty four. That's apretty good dag one day, good day.
And the defensive front to be determined. I wasn't wild. Yeah,
and that's my Ernie Adams. Thatwas his comment. Where are these elite
players are great recruits, and whereare they making a difference in the game
(13:45):
in that front four? Remember, your readers are penetrators. A lot of
times. I think there's some readeven though this is supposed to be a
penetrating up the field, attack, aggressive defense. It's it's to be determined.
Here's all I say. I don'tsee Chase Young and I don't see
the Bosta brothers out there. Absolutelyto TWI molo out. I thought had
a really good game for a collegefootball player, but he didn't have that
(14:07):
step up that we expected Ohio State. Is that Is that fair to say
that, because that's the way Ilooked at it. No. I mean,
I'd like, we can't see howguys grade out. So every player
gets a grade for every snap ofthe game and with an overall grade.
Yeah, it'd be interesting to seehow those guys graded out if they're keeping
their coach is happy. Yeah, let's talk about the offense for a minute
(14:30):
and some things that you kid.One of the things that you said was
Trevion Henderson. It wasn't necessarily TravionHenderson, but boy, Chip training was
fantastic. Yeah. The Trevion theHenderson thing. Do we go back to
twenty one when he was a phenomenalfreshman or last year where we had injury
issues and he wasn't the same guy. He made guys miss We'd like to
see more of his game in space. That's where he's at his best.
(14:54):
I think the old line issues wherethey had a couple run throughs where he
didn't have a chance, hurt hisards per carry average. And obviously going
forward, the question is durability andquarterback play. You talked a little bit
about it, but were we disappointedthat we didn't see Devin Brown as much?
I was surprised. Yeah, we'resaying we're here and again it's uh,
(15:16):
we got the same starter, butDevin Brown's gonna get more snaps.
It was okay, it was okay, game one, turn him. I
think they're going to turn him loosethis week. I really do. I
think they're gonna be more aggressive withthe play calls. I'd say, coach
look back at that and said, look, I'm gonna have to take the
training wheels off. We gotta letlet him play and we'll see what happens.
(15:37):
And you said the offensive line andthe offensive line earlier you said played
safe football, But what's your thoughtson them right now? That was my
biggest concern after that game. Now, look, when you have to have
a lot of snaps together, Imean that that's a unit of five guys
U two tight ends. We sawsome twelve personnel, which is the flavor
that they've been made popular with whatMonk did at Georgia the last few years.
(16:02):
It helps you that unit of thoseguys up there together. The more
reps they have together, the morecohesive it is. We know they've got
talented players, just some things thatneed to be cleaned up this week.
Gee, Scott is very pretty muchan opposite player to Stover. But when
they're both in there in that tootight end set, that's fun to watch
(16:23):
because they're very different. It givesa whole different thing. All Right,
some good stuff. Let's dig intosome of the other games, some of
the key games that happened in thefive day stretch over Labor Day, and
I'm just pulled a couple of thatthat I thought were important. Utah in
Florida. The utes defense is unbelievablygood, and you talked about it a
week ago. Well, here's whatI'm gonna say. There's some stock went
(16:47):
up for some teams with me overthe last that five day stretcher ever was
and there were teams who stock wentdown, and you know, stock up
for me right now after watching Weekzero, Week one, there's a team
in Colorado. Yeah, that we'regoing to talk about. Wow, we'll
get to that. Notre Dame.I think because of the play at sam
Hartman Alabama, I was I wassurprised, not surprised, but it was.
(17:12):
Jaln Melrose showed up at quarterback.Washington beat the breaks off the Boise
fifty six nineteen UT. Their defensehas improved. They're still scoring points at
forty nine Oregon. I know it'sPortland State eighty one points, eighty one
to seven, Oklahoma seventy three tozero against Arkansas State North Carolina. I've
(17:37):
played with the defense, gene Chiswicksdefense, duke dominant performance they were.
They played well enough to keep thescore what it was. That was kind
of a weird game. FSU dominantsecond half, Oregon strait DJU. Yeah.
And that's a physical football team inUSC. I mean, they can
(17:57):
outscore anybody. We always talked aboutwhat the questions are with them, but
stock down for me. We're aboutto talk about that team. The Gators,
Florida Clemson. Zero points for Clemsonin the second half. LSU their
second half was disappointing Baylor, theTexas State loss, which that was TCU
(18:25):
do you know the points given upin the last three games by the horn
Frogs three three defense at least onehundred. They gave up forty five to
Michigan, right, they gave upsixty five, and they just gave up
forty five to Colorado one. Yeah. Yeah, so and then South Carolina's
(18:47):
old line play that that that thatwas not good. I know, they
had some injuries. And then obviouslyeverybody's darling in the everybody had a darling
that they thought was the Big twelvedark horse, and that was Texas Tech
and they take the loss to Wyoming. So, yeah, let's look at
this. We'll get through these gamespretty quick. Paul Florida eleven points at
(19:11):
Utah. Uh. Look, GrahamMertz was pretty good. He was thirty
one to forty four through for overthree thirty, had the one turnover.
The Florida Gators rushed for thirteen yardson twenty one carries. Wow, now
we know how Utah plays. Theycome to defend and they come to hit
you in the mouth. That's whatthey did. Florida's offense allows seven sacks,
(19:37):
twelve negative plays. They were oneof thirteen on third down, which
seem praises to Utah nine penalties.Their defense looks better than what we saw
last year in that first game, but they weren't playing Cam Rising right.
I mean, I know Utah hasgot more than one scholarship playover on offense,
but look consists this simple. YouTall was more physical they offensively.
(20:02):
They struggled a little bit as wellon third down, but the defense took
this game over and that was nota good loss for Florida. The PAC
twelve is going to be fun towatch every week of the last year of
the PAC twelve. They really aresome great games, the deepest it's been
in my lifetime, and it's thelast year of that confidence. It's tragedy,
it's they're fantastic. And let's talkabout Colorado and TCU coach shit Air
(20:26):
Sanders. Oh my gosh, fiveten and you and I were texting back
and forth, Travis Hunter, whatwas that one hundred and twenty one plays?
I mean, Ohilse State's offense onlyplayed sixty He had over one hundred
and ten plays and he was effectiveon both sides of the ball. There
(20:47):
must see TV right now. They'refantastic. Do you think I'm going to
be anywhere else? Other than themain focus at noon on this Saturday is
their game. I mean and afterhey he Louis, I mean after the
game, all you naysayers I got, we got the receipts and the stuff
that comes out of his mouth.I mean, it's a show. But
(21:10):
the show was the kids they competed. Man. I mean that team lost
by an average of almost thirty pointsa game last year and now it ain't
the same team. You got kidsthat have been used to winning that are
now on that roster that was totallyflipped. Travis Hunter as of today gets
my vote for best player in collegefootball. What he did playing one hundred
(21:34):
and twenty nine snaps over one hundredyards, receiving a pick that was a
great ballplay. I mean he's special, man. I mean he's going to
play for a long time. Thenhe allowed one reception. Yeah, I
mean, if I'm picking him,he can only play one place. He's
playing corner. Yeah, but yougot to get the ball in his hands.
(21:56):
I don't know how sustainable that is, but a special player. Shader
Sanders five hundred ten yards passing fourtouchdowns, no picks. Incredible. How
about the running back Dylan Edwards,Electric one hundred and fifty nine three touchdowns,
explosion plays throughout the game. Butyeah, the concern for Colorado is
they caused zero negative plays. Weknow TCU has been better and is better
(22:22):
offensively than they are defensively, butthey need to have a better week this
week. But TCU ten penalties twoturnovers were the closing difference in the game.
That touchdown pass at Sanders two onhis back foot. I literally was
like, oh my lord, thatwas crazy to watch, fun to watch.
Yeah, just if you get achance to make sure you do.
North Carolina South Carolina. The QBSwent after it and North Carolina won it
(22:48):
because South Carolina's offensive line is bad. Man. I'm seriously I felt bad
for Spencer Ratler. Yeah, Imean, first off, Drake may was
solid. He had the two turnovers, but there their offensive was balanced.
But seriously, Jeane Chiswicks defense. We haven't talked about UNC playing defense since
we've done this show. They playeddefense. They hold South Carolina to four
(23:10):
or fourteen, but this is aridiculous number. They sacked South Carolina Rattler
nine times. That's not just hurriesand shots, that's sacks. They had
an additional sixteen tackles for lost.Wow. Uh yeah, that's good defense,
but that's bad offense. Uh.No, defensive takeaways and remind us
(23:33):
two and turnovers was the only reallyglaring spot for but South Carolina O line
that that's got it, that thatthat is not acceptable. Uh. And
still Spencer Rattler was still thirty ofthirty nine for three fifty three and did
not throw a pick, So hebattled. I was blown away by Penn
State taking care of of West Virginia. James has a team and one of
(23:56):
the things coach, I want totell you that I liked about Penn State
and that concerns me about when theyplay the Buckeyes. He could have taken
a knee. Was six seconds left, and he punched it in because he
could. That's a guy who's gotsomething to prove this year. Watch out.
You know. I don't gamble, but there was some supposed it supposedly
(24:18):
affected that that twenty and a halfthat wasn't so it was the money lock,
you know. I text James afterthe game and told him, I
said, this summer, I mean, I think this could be their year.
And here's the deal. Uh.Neil Brown, West Virginia. They're
gonna have a their schedule. It'sgonna be tough. They have a lack
of play mayor makers. In thisgame. They struggled on third down and
(24:41):
offensively. But the Drew all Alerera has begun, and urban Meyer said
he thinks right now he's the bestquarterback in the Big ten. Uh.
He showed up. And I hadsome people that watched them play in camp
and in spring ball, and theysaid, he's the real deal. You
know, twenty one to twenty nine, three twenty five didn't turn the ball
(25:02):
over. Three touchdown day. Yougot the two headed running back monster with
Singleton and Island. The average whateverit was one twenty on just twenty three
carries. KeAndre Lambert Smith a bigday average per catch was thirty one yards.
And then mannydaz is helter skeltered, defense, attack, create negative plays.
(25:25):
It was good. And again bestcompliment of coach can get is your
team looks coached. They looked coached. Zero turnovers and they had one penalty
in the game for Penn State. So at Penn State, if they stay
healthy, they take coaching, theygot a chance. It's a good football
team. Quinn yours Man Texas lookedreally really good. Blue Rice out,
(25:47):
how yours look good? You knowj T. Daniels at his fourth stop
at for Rice, I mean hissame thing has shown up. He threw
two picks that helped Texas. Butyeah, Quinn, yours two sixty pass
three passing touchdowns or rushing touchdowns,no turnovers for Texas. Look, no,
bijon, it was it's running backby committee a little bit more this
(26:10):
year. What was good for theoffense Sark has to be happy is they
had six players with multiple catches inthat offense. That means the ball is
getting They are getting the ball tomultiple people, which always helps offense.
Then you've got Xavier Worthy, whohas a fast start to this year.
He had strong year last year withseven receptions. Texas d hold Rice to
(26:33):
one point one yard per rush. That's twenty five for twenty seven yards,
twenty five attempts, twenty seven yards. Here's my question. We'll talk about
it this week. How good isthe Texas offensive line because we're gonna find
out. Oh yeah, we're gonnafind out on Saturday. Yeah, Saturday
night. We're gonna find out.Coach, you said two weeks ago that
(26:53):
Florida State, you thought was goingto be one of the most improved teams
in football. You were looking werebig things from him, and boy,
they didn't disappoint Sunday night. Well, I knew what they had at Jordan
Travis. I know what they've donein the transfer portal. I know what
they've done in recruiting, and MikeNorvelle is a good football coach. And
we kind of saw this coming, you know, last year at this time,
(27:15):
the talk is that the head coachat Florida State's gonna be Deon Sanders
and Mike Norvelle was gonna be outand they had a successful season. So
this LSU FSU game, what ajoy it was to watch. It was
the tale of two halves. It'sseventeen fourteen. LSU at half looks full
in control and then FSU shows upand wins the second half thirty one to
(27:41):
seven. A little bit disappointing forme, is I coach Kelly taking the
points on that first drive. Ifyou remember, it ends up like on
the two yard line. They don'tget it. But the good and the
bad Jayden Daniels made up for thisis good and bad. Jaden Daniels was
responsible for four hundred and ten ofthe four hundred and sixty offensive yards for
(28:03):
LSU. Jordan Travis for FSU twentythree of thirty one three forty two,
four touchdowns, thirty eight rushing yards. Do you think they like that Michigan
State transferred? Do you think coachTucker would I like to have ya Coleman
back? Yeah, nine catches, one twenty two, three touchdowns, the
hat trick for his UH opener withthe seminals. But here's the biggest difference
(28:27):
to me third down both ways.LSU is three for ten offensively on third
down. FSU is nine of fourteen. That's a big difference in the game.
And look, now it does surpriseme those coach Kelly did not mince
words about coaching and players after thatgame LSU. Concerning to me would be
(28:51):
even though you played a dynamic offenseallowing five hundred yards and forty five points
in that first game. Yeah,is this a bad thing for Brian Kelly
right now? It's the first game, and you know you can't overreact because
I hit scrimmages in college football andit's uh. Look, they can still
go to play for a national title. Yeah, we saw the Buckeyes do
it losing an early game to VirginiaTech years ago. They can they can
(29:15):
still win the SEC and they canstill go to the playoff. And I
had them and still believe they're talentedenough. I thought they were. You
can't really call them a dark darkhorse because they were preseason whatever it was
fifth or sixth, and but Iwas surprised with the second half we saw
in that game. But good, good for seminal fans that it's cool to
(29:36):
see him absolutely absolutely, coach, did you think before the weekend that you
were gonna maybe be sitting here talkingabout the best quarterback performance of the weekend
maybe coming from Duke Wow seven.I'm gonna hurt my arm by trying to
pat myself on the back. RileyLeonard, we've talked about him in these
(29:59):
pre season shows, Paul, Yeah, right now. I think mel Kiper's
got him as the third overall takein at quarterback in the draft. Mike
Elko can coach, and they playdefense at Duke. Here here's the thing.
This game was similar. This gamewas kind of weird because statistically this
thing's almost dead on. Yeah, but similar to LSU FSU seven six Clemson
(30:22):
and a half. Duke wins thesecond half twenty two to zero. I
was surprised to see the Cade ClubNic Garrett Riley with the anticipations, anticipation
of what he Garrett Riley did atTCU with Max Duggan last year, and
now he shows up with this starCade Club Nic and they score seven points.
(30:42):
Yeah. Will Shipley did show upfor Clemson. But Clemson actually out
gained Duke, but untimely turnovers withthree of them two miss field goals,
not enough explosion plays and red zoneoffense were the demise. And there was
hitting yardage in this game and specialteams that played a difference in field position.
(31:03):
But yeah, great, great dealfor Duke and Clemson. Ain't what
they've been, No, not atall, not at all. The upsets
this weekend blew a lot of peopleaway. I want to highlight a couple
of them quickly. First of all, WKU showed their offense against South Florida.
Man, we're gonna see that teamin Ohio Stadium a week from Saturday.
They could score well, we knowabout Austin Reid twenty nine for fifty
(31:27):
three thirty six. They throw theball around the lot to touchdowns, But
you can't beat yourself USF three turnoversand eleven penalties, that's beating yourself.
The other concern for me if I'ma Western Kentucky fan getting ready to play
the Buckeyes and a couple of weeks, is they allow three hundred and seventy
four rushing yards to South Florida.Yeah, that's gonna be a thing.
(31:48):
Fresno State beat Perdue. You saidPurdue is not very good, and Fresno
State went in there improved it.I didn't. I don't think Purdue's not
very good. I just think they'vegot a bear of a schedule. Yeah,
and they lost. Obviously O'Connell wasa big deal for that football team.
But you know Fresno State, don't. Mikey Keane had a really good
(32:08):
weekend. Thirty one to forty four, three sixty six, four touchdowns,
just the one turnover. Jeff Tedford'sgot another team winning games. The punt
returned by Tyrone Tracy, it wasa ninety eight yarder for Purdue, was
a bright spot. But obviously theirpast defense, their third down defense offense,
third down offense was the trouble forhim. So So Northern Illinois heads
(32:31):
over to Massachusetts and beats Boston College. Wow, go mid major. Yeah,
this is a bad loss for coachHafley, but goodwin for Northern Illinois.
Yeah, you know in Iu,in Iu, in IU holds Boston
College to overtime field goal, thescores the touchdown to seal it. Again,
(32:53):
don't beat yourself. Boston College tencostly penalties and they could not get
off the field on third downs.Yeah, and you talked about it earlier.
Wyoming all over Texas Tech. ThatWyoming team is good, but who
thought they were gonna do what theydid down in Texas. Well. Again,
here's the thing with Texas Tech. The two overtime loss where they have
(33:13):
three missed field goals in this game, they're held to only ninety three yards
rushing, averaging two point eight percarry against Wyoming. This was a big
surprise. But here's what happens. We talked. We talked about this every
year. I've got friends in coachingwho've come off a surprise good year and
(33:34):
they get to hear how great theyare on campus and by their parents and
everybody's all year, and it ispoison man. So you want her because
Texas Tech, Joey McGuire's second year. They've been told you guys got better
last year. This could be youryear. Maybe this is your year to
get well, that's a bad lossthey overlooked and we'll see what They've got
(33:57):
a big one this week. Yeah, any other games you want to mention
from last this weekend, there werea lot of good ones. Nebraskas ten
to thirteen loss. Matt Rules startswith another single digit Nebraska loss, which
I'm sure it was heartbreaking for himand those kids. Washington. Yeah,
Michael Pennox junior, they can score. Their defense showed up and they shut
Boise State down the last three quartersof that game. Oklahoma defense and Dylan
(34:22):
Gabriel being the trigger man at Oklahoma. If the defense is anything would it
looked like against Arkansas State and DylanGabriel stays healthy. Year two for Brent
Vnables could be a good one inthe Sooner fans. Texas A and m
good first game for Jimbo and coachPetrino Connor Wegman's their guy at quarterback.
(34:43):
They got a big one this week, but their win was impressive with fifty
two points scored against New Mexico andUtah State fourteen at number twenty five Iowa
who wins at twenty four to fourteen. We start on a sad note that
Brian Parents doesn't get to the twentyfive point benchmark with Kade mcnamaraso. The
(35:06):
getting paid for twenty five points isover one. Yeah, they got to
do something about that offense. They'retrying, but they're not trying hard enough.
Coach, You're talked about some greatgames coming up this weekend. Right
off the bat, I look atNotre Dame in NC State. That's a
huge football game New ABC. It'llbe on one of the TV's in front
of me. And you got numberten Notre Dame seven and a half point
(35:27):
favorite at NC State who has theirwin against Connecticut. Sam Hartman is back
on the road in the ACC.This time we're in the gold helmet.
Is Notre Dame for real and BrennanArmstrong made him play with his legs last
week. Is the new trigger manfor NC State and that place is not
easy to play at. So itcould be a good one. That could
(35:47):
be a good one. Utah atBaylor. Baylor was so disappointing last weekend.
I think Utah stops him with thatgreat defense. Huh yeah, New
ESPN. That Utah team that's numbertwelve. We know how they play.
It's a road test. Still,it looks like without Cam Rising, Baylor
last week was its fifth straight loss. This is a big week for David
(36:08):
rand and that coaching staff. BlakeSheppon is out at quarterback. So you
got Miss Mississippi State transfer Sawyer Robertson'sgonna have his shots to see if he
can get him a w. I'mtaking the home team in this one.
Ole Miss is heading to Tulane.Oh, you're taking the home team.
I am taking the home team.I sent my I sent my bets in
(36:30):
a little bit to go, andI'm taking Tulane. So arguably one of
the biggest, if not the biggesthome game that Tulane has had. You're
sitting there in number twenty four inthe country, hosting the number twenty Old
Miss fighting Kiffens, and Old Missis a seven and a half point favorite.
(36:51):
The Judkins Dark Kiffen offensive show. They're gonna score points. Yeah,
but so does Tulane. Tulane haswon thirteen of their life fifteen games.
Paul and Michael Pratt has a faststart with four touchdown passes last week.
Yeah, this could be a funone. I'm looking forward to that one.
Iowa at Iowa State. Is anybodygonna score the three thirty Fox game.
(37:15):
Iowa at one and zero dropped outof the top twenty five even after
a win. Our four point favoritesat Iowa State. Who's sitting there at
want to know? It's an instate rivalry. No bets to be made,
Paul, No bets to be made. The over under thirty six and
a half. It's at Iowa State, so we'll see if the home team
(37:37):
can take it. Yeah, theCyclones Texas A and M goes to the
U. This could be a reallyinteresting football game. You know what,
three thirty ABC, Maybe they shouldn'thave the quarterback down there for the RedHawks
should not have made the comment thatthey're the real Miami as it was a
big week for Miami. They lookgood last week, so to Tyler Van
Dyke. This is the first realtest on the road for Bobby and Jr.
(38:02):
Ewing as as we're gonna see withConnor Wigman leading the charge offensively,
here's the key Miami defense and specialteams watch what We'll see what happens if
Miami's defense shows up, gets TexasA and m offensively frustrated, they make
a couple of plays in special teamsMary or christ Ball could get that that
(38:22):
crew to two and oh you seeis heading to Pittsburgh. That could be
an interesting game, very good matchup. Yeah, I don't I think I
get the CW network, but it'suh yeah. You see beat Eastern Kentucky
University last week sixty six thirteen, and this is as pitt one, forty
(38:44):
five to seven. A lot ofunknowns with this these two teams, Paul,
So we're gonna learn a lot. This is the first test for both
and coach Sadderfield's first you see roadgame SMU travels to Oklahoma. You think
they're gonna score seventy again or no? So you got the one and zero
SMU acc bound ponies at number eighteenOklahoma, who's a fifteen and a half
(39:07):
point favorite. Rett Lashley's second yearSMU with the w over law Tech,
they can score points. Interested tosee if Oklahoma can dominate in week two?
Are they the real deal? We'regonna find another chapter about Oklahoma this
week. Yeah, a new teamto the ACC next year. Stanford they
take on USC. Oh this isa game to get me in trouble.
(39:29):
It's ten thirty and I'm just startingto watch kickoff ten thirty Eastern on Fox.
It's the one in oh Stanford CardinalA. As you said, ACC
bound at number six USC, who'sa twenty nine point favorite. Last week
Stanford with a thirty seven twenty fourwin at Hawaii. This is your one
for head football coach Troy Taylor, and he's going to get a real test
(39:50):
for that defense. Again. We'llsee what USC does. But Calebo,
I'm gonna make I don't make predictionsin my opinion, since the running back
at Ohio State won two of themin Archie. If Caleb Williams stays healthy,
he's gonna be hard to beat forthe Heisman Trophy. There's no questions
(40:13):
he's that good, no question thatoffense is that good. So there's two
primetime games, and I'm gonna letyou talk about the second one. But
the first one I want to hitis Texas at Alabama. That is truly
the primetime game. The other onesat noon, and you were talking about
that earlier. We'll probably talk moreabout it, but Texas Alabama coach unbelievable
game, can't wait. Yeah,I'm not saying Texas is back when I'm
saying Texas has the dogs. Theygot they're talented. Yeah, so is
(40:38):
this We got number eleven Texas atnumber three Alabama seven point favorite at home,
they're in Tuscaloosa. Is this goingto be the signature win for Steve
Sarkisian yours is on the road andTuscaloosa Bryant, then he stadium will be
rocking? Is the tide and biggestbig game? Kevin Steele's new defense look
(41:05):
pretty good last week. Tommy Reese'soffense look pretty good last week. Is
Jalen Milroe the man? There's gonnabe a lot of answered in this in
this game, do not underestimate thecrowd noise. It's going to be a
factor. How much of a factor? We don't know. Who is the
best team in the trenches. Youknow there's NFL players on both sides,
(41:30):
on both sides of the ball,or all three phases of the ball,
and what's the what's the game inthe trenches? And lastly they'll be I
think a special team play could bethe difference in this game and the most
you've got kool Aid McKinstry. That'sa big time talent there for the Tide
returning punts. What other games doyou want to talk about? I know
(41:52):
we talked about the noon prime timegame. You said you wanted to watch
that one. Well real quick. The Friday night game, yeah, which
should be for high school I agree, But as soon as we get maction
back, we'll have a game everynight of the week. But you got
Illinois want to Oh, how goodare they defensively? Because they're gonna be
(42:15):
facing Kansas and offense. That's thethree point favorite Friday Night. Jaylen Daniels.
As we know the talent he is, then you've got don't sleep on
this game. Paul seven PM,Fox Number thirteen, Oregon one to oh
at a wounded Texas Tech at home? Dan Landing's team? Is it a
(42:36):
legit continure in year two? Arethey legit? Bow Nicks? Another good
start in week one? Joey McGuire'steam. Can they bounce back after the
road loss at Women? Another one? Gus malson UCF three and a half
point favorites at a wounded Boise Statewho came off that loss last week and
then the seven thirty ABC game.Don't sleep on this one with Wisconsin the
(43:00):
road trip to the West coast. It's a seven thirty ABC game. You
got one to zero. Jake Dickert, head football coach led Washington State,
who is sitting there in the packtwo. They won last week fifty to
twenty four over Colorado State. CameronWard he can play last week thirty seven,
(43:22):
forty nine four fifty one, fourtouchdowns and he's a duel threat forty
yards rushing. Wow. And thelast one, Paul Big Noon Fox must
see TV yep. I mean youcan't. It's you can't help but watch
it. You have to watch itbecause you what's gonna happen? What's gonna
be said? I mean he doubleddown last week. Now you got a
(43:45):
Nebraska team coming in that needs avictory and they went from no show to
the top twenty five ranking. Thisweek. Colorado was number twenty two in
the country. Paul, Yeah, they were twenty twenty one point dogs last
week. What needs to be said? I mean, you got Nebraska,
you got Colorado's a three point favoriteat home, biggest home game in twenty
(44:07):
plus years. I saw today oryou can't get in Colorado Stadium for less
than five hundred bucks. Yeah.Last year Parker in our office told me
today that you could get to goto every home game for whopping two hundred
and twenty bucks. Complete, Soit's it's he's brought he's brought the cash.
(44:30):
Yeah. I was told they soldalmost a half million dollars in tickets
just this week. I mean, that's just people are throwing their money and
going take my money. I wantto be there and coach, we do
the Win the Day Award. AndI feel like I feel like, because
of what happened with Colorado and TCUthat I may have just sent you a
softball on who won the Day.But I don't know did you did you
(44:53):
go with the softball or did youdig even deeper than that on who won
the Day? Well? I gotI got two prospects, I got two
runner ups. The Pack twelve, yeah, thirteen and oh, first time
that's happened for the Pack eight Packtwelve undefeated week one since nineteen thirty two.
(45:17):
Wow, I think that was thenumber. So if I'm a check
thrown me, this one was almostmy win of the Day Win the Day
Award. There's a former Buckeye thatjust got a paycheck five years, one
hundred and seventy million dollars, onehundred and twenty two and a half million
(45:42):
of it is locked. It's guaranteedcash money to mister Nick Bosa. So
the forty nine ers have locked himin that. I'd say he's gonna be
doing all right. He's gonna bedoing He's not gonna have any problem,
paints Edison Bill is he Nah,he's a great player. But I mean,
you did It's a softball, butyou swing hard at softballs. Yeah.
The Win the Day Award is aColorado football program the fan base Coach
(46:07):
Prime seven million plus watched last week. What will that number be this week?
So, yeah, there's your Winto Day. That's that's too easy.
It was too easy, but that'sokay. We knew the answer and
going in and that was okay.Coach. Let's talk a little bit about
this game this weekend. The Buckeyeshave obviously, the Penguins are who they
(46:27):
are. It's Youngstown State, it'sa noon game. I mean, did
the Buckeyes really need to do?You know, kind of the Oklahoma style
put sixty seventy eighty points on theboard, or do they just need to
show up and play football. Theymay try just to give Ryan Day peace
of mind for the week that hey, basement on your keyboards keyboard warriors,
(46:51):
Yeah, look y sue hit.Football coach Doug Phillips has an interesting pass.
Was a school administrator between stops andfootball. As a coach. They
are coming off a seven and fouryear three for that staff. In twenty
twenty two Week one, with awin over Valpo fifty two to ten.
Did what they're supposed to do ys hus offense led by a senior quarterback
(47:15):
Mitch Davidson. Last week, theyrushed for three hundred and three yards offensively
led by a senior running back TyshanKing. The defense held Valpo to forty
yards rushing last week had three takeaways. Now all that said doesn't matter.
(47:36):
This is all about the Buckeyes andreally that's the way it is every week.
It's all about what you bring tothe game and what you brought in
preparation. So I do believe theBuckeyes opening it up I said at the
beginning to show I think that he'sgonna be a little bit more aggressive or
a lot more aggressive with play callsand say, hey, training wheels are
off, go play. But here'sthe goal. The goal is a clean
(48:04):
game, scoring more points where theright people are touching the football. They
got to get they got to getthe horses the rock Marvin Harrison at Bucca
Harrison fleming, those guys got totouch the ball. Explosion plays. You
want to see him make them becausewe didn't get a ton of them last
(48:25):
week, and we want to seethe defense again limit them explosion plays on
both sides of the ball. Hope, you're hoping that there's a we did
overreact. That offensive line is betterthan what we thought what we saw last
week. I think that's something thatyou're gonna want want to see as a
Buckeye fan, but more importantly aBuckeye coaching player. Improve on third down
(48:49):
offense. It's critical that killed himlast week is they have to find a
way to get first downs and stayahead of schedules so they're not in third
and long situations. And the lastone is is that we're looking at all
phases of the game. You're hopingto see cleaner coverage. You know,
I'm ant picking, but I canguarantee it was coached this week. We
can't give up two chunk punk returnsbecause when you do that against a team
(49:10):
like Notre Dame, that's the stuffthat can cost you in the big picture
at the end. Yeah, greatstuff as always really really good insight.
I just I just hope that teamgoes out and put something together and shuts
a few people up. I'm justthat way. I don't want, I
don't need to be that way becausewe say it. Urban Meyer said it
(49:32):
last week. It's the best thingabout being one and oh, chance to
be two and oh, And that'sreally what it comes down to. Well.
Urban Meyer also said this, youyou can't lose a game at Ohio
State. You can't. Yeah, you cannot lose in that stadium. They
(49:54):
get those guys get paid a lotof money, so there's no hurt feelings
for these guys and send but theI know. But there's as much,
if not more pressure at o HighState as the head football coach is any
other place in the country. NickSaban can lose a game because he's got
seven national titles. Yeah, oh, Michigan, I mean it, truly.
(50:16):
If Michigan plays oh High State andthe COVID year Jim Harball may not
be the head coach there anymore, and now he's taking him to two to
back to back college football playoffs, but they stuck with him. So that's
the thing that frustrates me from beinga coach married to a coach. As
always say, it's humbling to bethe second best coach in your house,
(50:37):
which is what I am. Iseverything that goes into it, all the
stuff that matters, all the uncontrollablesis Ryan Day winning percentage is elite.
It is, so have some patience. Let's see what happens. But Buckeye
(50:57):
fans, let's let's go out andbe supportive of the buck guys this week
instead of being and again it's justa small percentage. So I'll let that
dead horse be be not beating anymore. Enjoy the games this weekend. I
imagine you'll be a pleasant tomorrow night. That's a big one for them.
Highland's got a heck of an offense. I'll be there for about two and
a half three quarters and they'll talkabout it tomorrow night after And this is
every Friday night after the games. They do the games on AM fourteen ninety
(51:22):
WMR and the then coach joins themfor postgame. They do a great job
on the scoreboard show, join themfor that. Hey, thanks for listening
to The Oh Show on iHeartRadio.Coach, have a great weekend, A
great one. We'll do it againnext week when the day
